or_o rather_o the_o soul_n which_o stir_v up_o the_o most_o generous_a passion_n to_o sight_n with_o those_o difficulty_n which_o hinder_v she_o the_o possession_n thereof_o the_o present_a ill_n be_v difficult_a war_n without_o consider_v the_o weakness_n of_o the_o state_n he_o have_v courage_n arm_n and_o man_n but_o the_o nerve_n of_o war_n be_v want_v neither_o do_v he_o see_v that_o his_o ally_n can_v favour_v he_o so_o when_o force_n be_v alone_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o irascible_a appetite_n may_v well_o stir_v up_o those_o noble_a passion_n and_o declare_v war_n against_o its_o enemy_n but_o the_o nerve_n and_o muscle_n not_o second_v its_o design_n its_o enterprise_n be_v vain_a and_o timorous_a on_o the_o contrary_a when_o the_o heart_n be_v weak_a the_o appetite_n be_v languish_v and_o lazy_a and_o although_o the_o member_n be_v robu_v it_o trust_v not_o their_o force_n and_o think_v it_o a_o succour_n too_o far_o off_o to_o make_v use_n of_o in_o such_o urgent_a occasion_n let_v we_o then_o conclude_v that_o that_o force_v which_o be_v necessary_a to_o assault_v and_o to_o resist_v principal_o consist_v in_o the_o hot_a and_o dry_a temperature_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o that_o that_o may_v be_v perfect_a and_o accomplish_a it_o must_v be_v accompany_v with_o that_o of_o the_o nerve_n and_o muscle_n but_o there_o be_v still_o two_o great_a difficulty_n to_o be_v decide_v the_o first_o be_v appetite_n the_o force_n belong_v to_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n that_o all_o those_o disposition_n of_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n serve_v also_o the_o concupiscible_a for_o beside_o that_o heat_n and_o spirit_n be_v necessary_a for_o all_o the_o faculty_n of_o life_n and_o that_o love_n and_o desire_n be_v ardent_a and_o impetuous_a passion_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o those_o creature_n which_o be_v to_o go_v fly_v or_o swim_v and_o which_o be_v often_o oblige_v to_o run_v after_o good_a shall_v have_v disposition_n necessary_a to_o perform_v these_o great_a motion_n to_o wit_n heat_v and_o firmness_n thus_o force_n will_v not_o be_v particular_o affect_v to_o the_o irascible_a part_n but_o it_o will_v be_v always_o in_o common_a to_o the_o concupiscible_a which_o yet_o be_v contrary_a to_o our_o ordinary_a philosophy_n which_o will_v have_v that_o different_a virtue_n must_v have_v different_a disposition_n to_o answer_v these_o reason_n we_o shall_v first_o say_v that_o it_o be_v true_a all_o different_a faculty_n require_v different_a disposition_n for_o if_o they_o be_v with_o thing_n which_o serve_v to_o many_o virtue_n and_o action_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v some_o diversity_n which_o make_v this_o difference_n which_o every_o particular_a action_n require_v so_o natural_a heat_n which_o serve_v as_o the_o universal_a instrument_n to_o all_o the_o function_n of_o life_n be_v diversify_v according_a to_o those_o operation_n necessary_a thereunto_o it_o must_v for_o some_o be_v moist_a or_o dry_a for_o other_o great_a little_a or_o temperate_a and_o every_o one_o have_v its_o portion_n and_o measure_n different_a from_o all_o the_o rest_n we_o then_o confess_v that_o the_o concupiscible_a and_o irascible_a appetite_n both_o employ_v heat_n and_o spirit_n and_o that_o there_o must_v be_v firmness_n in_o the_o motion_n of_o either_o of_o they_o but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o one_o require_v a_o sweet_a heat_n moist_a and_o pleasant_a and_o that_o the_o other_o will_v have_v one_o that_o be_v lively_a dry_a and_o pungent_a for_o the_o reason_n we_o shall_v hereafter_o deduce_v and_o that_o that_o firmness_n which_o appear_v in_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a part_n be_v outward_o and_o pure_o accidental_a not_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o happen_v to_o the_o part_n out_o of_o necessity_n instead_o that_o in_o other_o it_o be_v first_o find_v in_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n which_o afterward_o communicate_v it_o to_o the_o organ_n for_o this_o appetite_n only_o can_v establish_v itself_o and_o when_o the_o soul_n suffer_v this_o kind_n of_o motion_n it_o even_a form_n some_o passion_n of_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n indeed_o this_o establishment_n of_o the_o soul_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o proper_a agitation_n of_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n because_o there_o be_v no_o motion_n more_o efficacious_a to_o resist_v and_o assault_v then_o that_o which_o reunite_v the_o virtue_n which_o hinder_v it_o to_o yield_v and_o which_o render_v the_o assault_n the_o more_o strong_a she_o also_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o all_o generous_a passion_n and_o if_o she_o cast_v herself_o into_o boldness_n and_o into_o anger_n it_o be_v certain_a she_o first_o settle_v herself_o and_o the_o only_a difference_n which_o there_o be_v betwixt_o the_o motion_n of_o desire_n and_o that_o of_o boldness_n be_v that_o at_o first_o the_o soul_n dart_v itself_o forth_o without_o settle_v itself_o and_o that_o in_o the_o other_o it_o perform_v both_o together_o as_o have_v be_v say_v the_o other_o difficulty_n be_v courage_n how_o force_n be_v different_a from_o courage_n that_o if_o force_v consist_v in_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o heart_n where_o we_o also_o have_v place_v courage_n it_o must_v follow_v that_o force_n and_o courage_n be_v the_o same_o thing_n what_o ever_o be_v say_v that_o a_o man_n have_v courage_n but_o want_v force_n and_o that_o force_v and_o courage_n must_v be_v join_v for_o the_o execution_n of_o great_a design_n we_o therefore_o say_v that_o heat_n alone_o may_v make_v courage_n all_o entire_a but_o that_o it_o make_v but_o a_o part_n of_o force_n beside_o courage_n be_v the_o power_n itself_o and_o force_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v as_o the_o instrument_n of_o this_o power_n for_o heat_n be_v not_o courage_n but_o it_o produce_v in_o the_o faculty_n this_o disposition_n and_o capacity_n of_o operate_a which_o we_o call_v courage_n instead_o whereof_o we_o may_v say_v that_o heat_n be_v force_n or_o at_o least_o that_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o force_n yet_o must_v we_o not_o from_o thence_o conclude_v that_o force_n do_v not_o belong_v proper_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n to_o power_n because_o the_o nature_n and_o essence_n of_o the_o instrument_n depend_v whole_o from_o the_o relation_n which_o it_o have_v to_o its_o cause_n and_o be_v there_o no_o cause_n there_o will_v be_v no_o instrument_n so_o strength_n be_v the_o instrument_n of_o power_n it_o proper_o and_o primary_o belong_v to_o it_o and_o by_o its_o mean_n to_o those_o action_n and_o subject_n wherein_o it_o be_v but_o it_o be_v to_o go_v too_o far_o into_o the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o school_n let_v we_o return_v to_o our_o discourse_n of_o boldness_n and_o see_v what_o effect_n it_o produce_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o humour_n chap._n iu._n what_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o humour_n be_v in_o boldness_n have_v show_v you_o that_o the_o consider_v the_o countenance_n of_o a_o man_n before_o he_o assault_v ill_a but_o who_o only_o see_v it_o come_v will_v perceive_v no_o sign_n of_o this_o sally_n of_o the_o spirit_n forasmuch_o as_o he_o change_v not_o colour_n and_o that_o fire_n which_o we_o see_v afterward_o glitter_v in_o his_o eye_n appear_v not_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o if_o these_o spirit_n cast_v themselves_o on_o those_o part_n they_o will_v carry_v thither_o redness_n and_o splendour_n and_o will_v not_o leave_v they_o that_o coldness_n and_o equality_n with_o which_o he_o look_v upon_o and_o consider_v heat_n which_o be_v therein_o entertain_v to_o awake_v and_o to_o render_v it_o active_a as_o for_o those_o passion_n which_o oblige_v the_o soul_n to_o flight_n they_o make_v a_o quite_o contrary_a endeavour_n be_v she_o make_v in_o other_o passion_n boldness_n whâ—t_v the_o quality_n of_o heat_n be_v in_o boldness_n we_o must_v not_o consider_v the_o quality_n of_o the_o heat_n which_o accompany_v they_o and_o compare_v it_o with_o that_o which_o be_v observe_v in_o those_o passion_n which_o seek_v good_a for_o in_o these_o it_o be_v sweet_a humid_a and_o graceful_a and_o in_o those_o it_o be_v sharp_a dry_a and_o pungent_a so_o that_o it_o be_v very_o likely_a that_o in_o the_o first_o the_o soul_n employ_v it_o and_o shed_v it_o abroad_o without_o violence_n and_o in_o the_o other_o she_o raise_v it_o and_o drive_v it_o forth_o with_o impetuosity_n that_o in_o those_o it_o only_o need_v its_o ordinary_a virtue_n and_o in_o these_o it_o must_v be_v great_a and_o more_o active_a final_o we_o may_v say_v that_o in_o the_o one_o she_o use_v it_o as_o a_o follower_n accompany_v of_o she_o to_o her_o friend_n but_o in_o the_o other_o it_o be_v a_o assistant_n only_o the_o spirit_n which_o force_v it_o to_o the_o place_n where_o it_o be_v on_o the_o contrary_a when_o she_o be_v to_o fight_v she_o send_v heat_n as_o a_o powerful_a instrument_n to_o act_n and_o to_o destroy_v what_o be_v contrary_a unto_o it_o as_o also_o in_o this_o design_n she_o render_v it_o as_o strong_a as_o she_o can_v whether_o it_o be_v by_o degree_n augment_v it_o or_o stir_v up_o the_o spirit_n by_o a_o continual_a agitation_n or_o in_o remove_v the_o humour_n when_o she_o be_v most_o active_a as_o choleric_a be_v and_o certain_o what_o the_o sensitive_a faculty_n do_v in_o these_o encounter_n the_o natural_a also_o do_v it_o very_o often_o in_o those_o ordinary_a function_n as_o be_v easy_o judge_v by_o the_o favour_n which_o be_v just_a like_o boldness_n and_o anger_n the_o same_o heat_n the_o same_o tempest_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o humour_n and_o the_o same_o design_n which_o the_o soul_n have_v in_o those_o passion_n it_o encounter_v in_o that_o disease_n for_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o the_o favour_n be_v kindle_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o some_o strange_a fire_n it_o be_v the_o soul_n its_o self_n or_o rather_o the_o vital_a faculty_n which_o reunite_v its_o force_n which_o stir_v up_o natural_a heat_n and_o which_o lift_v itself_o up_o to_o fight_v those_o cause_n which_o destroy_v the_o harmony_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o when_o the_o humour_n be_v so_o malignant_a that_o nature_n be_v overcome_v with_o they_o and_o that_o she_o dare_v no_o long_o assault_v they_o and_o by_o a_o thousand_o other_o reason_n which_o we_o may_v produce_v have_v we_o room_n for_o they_o by_o which_o we_o may_v evident_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o the_o favour_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o innitation_n and_o a_o rise_n up_o of_o natural_a heat_n to_o drive_v away_o the_o ill_a and_o that_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o motion_n like_a to_o that_o of_o anger_n and_o that_o in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o high_a there_o be_v a_o appetite_n which_o have_v its_o irascible_a faculty_n to_o raise_v itself_o up_o against_o those_o difficulty_n which_o present_v themselves_o however_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n increase_v heat_n in_o boldness_n and_o in_o anger_n produce_v and_o add_v new_a degree_n to_o what_o it_o have_v and_o stir_v it_o up_o by_o the_o continual_a agitation_n of_o the_o spirit_n
