instant_a in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o scripture_n seem_v to_o be_v very_o cautious_a and_o exact_a to_o frame_v their_o life_n in_o every_o thing_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o they_o will_v not_o vary_v from_o it_o in_o the_o least_o particular_a or_o if_o they_o find_v themselves_o at_o any_o time_n in_o any_o thing_n to_o swerve_v from_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o rule_n they_o will_v judge_v themselves_o for_o it_o but_o now_o the_o word_n the_o rule_n itself_o be_v lay_v aside_o as_o a_o unnecessary_a and_o a_o useless_a thing_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o worthy_a the_o keep_n any_o long_o there_o be_v no_o care_n at_o all_o to_o walk_v by_o it_o when_o there_o be_v gross_a and_o horrid_a deviation_n from_o it_o they_o be_v not_o look_v upon_o as_o matter_n of_o humiliation_n or_o contrition_n in_o the_o least_o degree_n i_o wish_v that_o such_o will_v serious_o consider_v with_o themselves_o how_o christ_n shall_v own_v they_o in_o the_o latter_a day_n how_o he_o shall_v plead_v before_o his_o father_n for_o they_o that_o they_o have_v keep_v his_o word_n now_o my_o belove_a lay_v these_o thing_n to_o heart_n and_o never_o rest_n till_o you_o have_v get_v this_o character_n of_o those_o that_o be_v bestow_v on_o jesus_n christ_n by_o the_o donation_n of_o the_o father_n never_o satisfy_v yourselves_o till_o you_o keep_v the_o mortify_v the_o lust_n that_o hinder_v you_o in_o this_o business_n or_o if_o you_o do_v not_o so_o you_o may_v resolve_v on_o this_o and_o that_o but_o sure_o it_o will_v come_v to_o nothing_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o have_v within_o you_o any_o holy_a purpose_n of_o come_v near_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o leave_v such_o a_o sin_n or_o set_v upon_o such_o a_o duty_n think_v now_o what_o lust_n or_o what_o corruption_n there_o be_v
so_o sad_a and_o so_o uncomfortable_a to_o you_o by_o reason_n of_o your_o daily_a trouble_n but_o especial_o and_o chief_o by_o reason_n of_o your_o sin_n against_o he_o you_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o mercy_n this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v condemn_v when_o joseph_n be_v in_o prison_n though_o he_o want_v nothing_o there_o yet_o see_v how_o earnest_a and_o importunate_a he_o be_v with_o which_o he_o make_v for_o they_o and_o here_o i_o shall_v take_v notice_n only_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n the_o object_n of_o it_o and_o the_o part_n of_o it_o the_o object_n of_o it_o or_o the_o person_n who_o he_o present_v it_o to_o be_v mention_v by_o his_o title_n and_o his_o attribute_n his_o title_n here_o you_o see_v be_v father_n and_o his_o attribute_n be_v holy_a holy_a father_n the_o sweet_a title_n and_o the_o choice_a attribute_n as_o for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o the_o title_n that_o begin_v the_o object_n of_o his_o supplication_n here_o be_v father_n so_o he_o style_v he_o in_o the_o entrance_n of_o his_o prayer_n and_o the_o same_o phrase_n he_o use_v all_o along_o as_o you_o shall_v see_v if_o you_o survey_v it_o from_o the_o begin_n to_o the_o end_n indeed_o he_o give_v he_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o holy_a as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o my_o text_n and_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o righteous_a father_n at_o the_o 25._o verse_n but_o this_o be_v still_o the_o appellation_n that_o he_o use_v and_o from_o whence_o he_o never_o vary_v if_o he_o call_v he_o any_o thing_n he_o call_v he_o father_n and_o in_o this_o notion_n he_o consider_v he_o while_o he_o be_v put_v up_o his_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o therefore_o this_o you_o see_v my_o brethren_n be_v the_o first_o word_n that_o he_o use_v when_o he_o set_v himself_o to_o pray_v thus_o he_o begin_v his_o prayer_n for_o himself_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o chapter_n father_n glorify_v thy_o son_n and_o thus_o also_o he_o begin_v his_o prayer_n in_o behalf_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n in_o my_o text_n father_n keep_v they_o through_o thy_o own_o name_n so_o that_o you_o see_v our_o saviour_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o father_n still_o when_o he_o be_v pour_v out_o his_o prayer_n to_o he_o either_o for_o himself_o or_o other_o and_o this_o will_v yield_v we_o matter_n of_o very_o good_a consideration_n but_o that_o it_o have_v be_v very_o large_o handle_v heretofore_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v pass_v on_o from_o the_o title_n father_n unto_o the_o attribute_n our_o saviour_n give_v he_o here_o and_o that_o be_v holy_a but_o wherefore_o do_v our_o saviour_n mention_v this_o rather_o than_o any_o other_o attribute_n of_o god_n on_o this_o occasion_n why_o may_v he_o not_o have_v say_v aswell_o almighty_a or_o eternal_a or_o merciful_a or_o gracious_a father_n the_o special_a reason_n why_o he_o choose_v this_o expression_n as_o far_o as_o i_o conceive_v can_v be_v clear_o and_o undoubted_o resolve_v indeed_o he_o pray_v for_o holiness_n for_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n afterward_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v congruous_a he_o shall_v seek_v it_o of_o his_o father_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o holy_a god_n who_o be_v holy_a in_o himself_o and_o who_o be_v also_o the_o hallow_a and_o sanctifier_n of_o his_o people_n but_o see_v there_o be_v divers_a other_o thing_n in_o his_o petition_n this_o do_v not_o seem_v of_o weight_n enough_o to_o bind_v he_o up_o to_o this_o expression_n once_o this_o be_v clear_a and_o manifest_a that_o he_o pick_v out_o this_o attribute_n of_o god_n among_o the_o rest_n and_o whereas_o many_o other_o lie_v before_o he_o he_o fix_v upon_o this_o only_a he_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n by_o the_o name_n of_o holy_a father_n the_o thing_n be_v evident_a though_o the_o particular_a consideration_n that_o induce_v he_o to_o it_o be_v unknown_a so_o that_o this_o observation_n we_o may_v safe_o pitch_v upon_o doctrine_n as_o god_n it_o holy_a in_o himself_o so_o jesus_n christ_n come_v to_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n and_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n when_o he_o be_v make_v his_o petition_n to_o he_o the_o point_n you_o see_v have_v two_o branch_n first_o god_n be_v holy_a in_o himself_o then_o jesus_n christ_n come_v to_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n and_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n when_o he_o be_v make_v his_o petition_n to_o he_o i_o shall_v pursue_v they_o in_o their_o order_n god_n be_v holy_a in_o himself_o so_o he_o be_v style_v in_o my_o text_n you_o see_v and_o that_o by_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o who_o of_o all_o other_o in_o the_o world_n be_v best_a acquaint_v with_o his_o nature_n for_o he_o come_v forth_o out_o of_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o father_n indeed_o it_o be_v the_o attribute_n that_o he_o delight_v in_o and_o therefore_o he_o be_v call_v the_o holy_a one_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d very_o often_o in_o the_o scripture_n to_o show_v that_o he_o excel_v in_o this_o regard_n so_o that_o however_o there_o be_v many_o other_o that_o be_v holy_a in_o a_o measure_n yet_o he_o be_v the_o holy_a one_o there_o be_v not_o one_o so_o holy_a as_o he_o be_v and_o he_o be_v know_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o holy_a one_o of_o israel_n which_o be_v ascribe_v to_o he_o more_o than_o thirty_o time_n the_o seraphim_n which_o stand_v before_o the_o throne_n isa_n 6.3_o cry_v out_o three_o time_n a_o row_n holy_a holy_a holy_a be_v the_o lord_n of_o host_n and_o so_o according_o the_o beast_n that_o stand_v about_o the_o throne_n apoc._n 4.8_o rest_v not_o day_n and_o night_n say_v holy_a holy_a holy_a lord_n god_n almighty_n to_o show_v that_o god_n transcend_v in_o holiness_n he_o be_v superlative_a in_o this_o regard_n for_o so_o thrice_o holy_a in_o some_o language_n be_v most_o holy_a to_o say_v the_o truth_n this_o be_v the_o attribute_n that_o make_v he_o glorious_a he_o be_v great_a in_o power_n fearful_a in_o praise_n but_o he_o be_v glorious_a in_o holiness_n exod._n 15.11_o in_o this_o respect_n he_o be_v a_o none-such_a none_o to_o be_v compare_v with_o he_o none_o like_o he_o not_o among_o man_n only_o but_o among_o the_o god_n too_o who_o be_v like_a to_o thou_o o_o lord_n among_o the_o god_n glorious_a in_o holiness_n fearful_a in_o praise_n do_v wonder_n and_o hence_o he_o glory_v in_o his_o holiness_n and_o swear_v by_o it_o even_o as_o the_o great_a man_n of_o the_o world_n be_v wont_a to_o swear_v upon_o their_o honour_n because_o it_o be_v esteem_v among_o they_o the_o most_o sacred_a and_o inviolable_a thing_n so_o god_n you_o see_v my_o brethren_n swear_v by_o his_o holiness_n psal_n 29.35_o once_o have_v i_o swear_v by_o my_o holiness_n say_v god_n once_o for_o all_o and_o by_o my_o holiness_n have_v no_o better_a or_o more_o precious_a thing_n to_o swear_v by_o let_v i_o no_o long_o be_v esteem_v a_o holy_a god_n and_o that_o i_o will_v be_v very_o loath_a than_o i_o inviolable_o keep_v the_o covenant_n that_o i_o have_v make_v to_o david_n in_o my_o truth_n so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o former_a member_n of_o the_o point_n be_v firm_a god_n be_v holy_a in_o himself_o now_o for_o the_o second_o branch_n that_o jesus_n christ_n come_v to_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n and_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o holy_a god_n when_o he_o be_v make_v his_o petition_n christ_n will_v have_v none_o neither_o we_o have_v two_o advocate_n and_o intercessor_n to_o the_o father_n a_o intercessor_n or_o a_o advocate_n within_o we_o a_o intercessor_n or_o a_o advocate_n without_o we_o a_o intercessor_n to_o plead_v in_o we_o and_o to_o plead_v by_o we_o and_o a_o intercessor_n to_o plead_v for_o we_o in_o the_o first_o sense_n the_o spirit_n be_v our_o intercessor_n so_o the_o apostle_n call_v he_o rom._n 8.20_o in_o the_o latter_a christ_n only_o now_o these_o two_o advocate_n or_o intercessor_n be_v agree_v you_o get_v not_o one_o of_o they_o without_o the_o plead_v before_o he_o so_o our_o saviour_n never_o plead_v that_o which_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o frame_n and_o draw_v up_o if_o the_o petition_n which_o you_o tender_v be_v of_o the_o spirit_n form_v in_o you_o christ_n entertain_v and_o urge_v it_o without_o any_o more_o ado_n and_o so_o the_o father_n give_v assent_v to_o it_o if_o then_o you_o will_v have_v christ_n to_o be_v your_o advocate_n you_o must_v engage_v he_o by_o his_o spirit_n your_o supplication_n and_o petition_n must_v be_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o your_o heart_n the_o holy_a ghost_n must_v raise_v and_o frame_v they_o there_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n they_o be_v not_o bare_o natural_a desire_n as_o the_o petition_n of_o abundance_n be_v which_o seek_v for_o nothing_o else_o but_o that_o voice_n of_o christ_n spirit_n and_o if_o christ_n spirit_n make_v you_o prayer_n if_o he_o make_v intercession_n in_o you_o with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n christ_n will_v make_v intercession_n for_o you_o and_o then_o the_o father_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o hear_v you_o for_o if_o he_o deny_v you_o he_o must_v deny_v christ_n too_o that_o plead_v for_o you_o and_o that_o he_o never_o do_v as_o teacher_n of_o the_o church_n and_o it_o be_v for_o the_o ordinary_a member_n of_o the_o church_n who_o believe_v through_o their_o word_n so_o that_o whoever_o appertain_v to_o the_o church_n let_v he_o live_v in_o what_o time_n he_o will_v be_v he_o of_o what_o condition_n or_o estate_n he_o will_v he_o have_v a_o share_n in_o this_o prayer_n we_o must_v begin_v with_o the_o transition_n to_o it_o these_o word_n speak_v jesus_n these_o word_n what_o word_n the_o word_n in_o the_o three_o chapter_n next_o before_o all_o tend_v to_o establish_v his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n which_o the_o evangelist_n relate_v exact_o for_o the_o comfort_n and_o confirmation_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n even_o to_o the_o world_n end_n and_o have_v do_v with_o the_o relation_n he_o shut_v it_o heaven_n while_o he_o make_v it_o and_o in_o the_o next_o place_n his_o expression_n he_o do_v not_o meditate_v or_o think_v it_o only_o but_o he_o say_v it_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o mental_a only_o earnestness_n of_o his_o affection_n and_o from_o the_o fixedness_n and_o the_o intention_n of_o his_o thought_n he_o be_v as_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o earth_n and_o from_o those_o low_a thing_n and_o whole_o take_v up_o to_o heaven_n while_o he_o pray_v he_o be_v no_o long_o here_o below_o no_o he_o be_v above_o with_o god_n while_o he_o be_v exercise_v in_o this_o duty_n indeed_o it_o be_v observe_v of_o the_o publican_n that_o he_o be_v contrary_a to_o christ_n in_o this_o regard_n viz._n in_o the_o external_a gesture_n of_o his_o body_n our_o saviour_n pray_v as_o you_o have_v hear_v with_o eye_n erect_v and_o lift_v up_o to_o heaven_n the_o publican_n with_o eye_n deject_v and_o cast_v downward_o to_o the_o earth_n and_o yet_o this_o carriage_n also_o seem_v to_o be_v approve_v luke_n 18.13_o the_o publican_n say_v the_o evangelist_n will_v not_o lift_v up_o so_o much_o as_o his_o eye_n to_o heaven_n but_o smite_v his_o breast_n say_v god_n be_v merciful_a to_o i_o a_o sinner_n and_o true_o both_o these_o gesture_n have_v their_o use_n in_o prayer_n the_o one_o to_o manifest_v a_o repentance_n the_o other_o to_o declare_v our_o faith_n the_o one_o to_o show_v that_o we_o be_v cast_v down_o in_o ourselves_o the_o other_o to_o discover_v that_o we_o be_v raise_v and_o lift_v up_o to_o god_n but_o it_o become_v not_o jesus_n christ_n to_o pray_v in_o such_o a_o posture_n as_o that_o wretched_a creature_n do_v because_o he_o have_v no_o sin_n in_o he_o and_o consequent_o no_o shame_n nothing_o to_o cast_v he_o down_o or_o hinder_v he_o from_o look_v up_o with_o boldness_n and_o with_o confidence_n to_o god_n the_o father_n and_o hence_o he_o pray_v not_o like_o the_o publican_n in_o a_o deject_a way_n but_o lift_v up_o his_o eye_n to_o heaven_n and_o say_v that_o lead_v we_o to_o the_o second_o thing_n consider_v christ_n do_v not_o meditate_v or_o think_v his_o prayer_n only_o but_o he_o say_v it_o his_o prayer_n be_v not_o man_n may_v say_v and_o yet_o not_o pray_v he_o may_v utter_v good_a petition_n and_o speak_v a_o form_n of_o specious_a word_n to_o god_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v not_o pray_v indeed_o so_o as_o to_o find_v acceptance_n and_o success_n with_o god_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o man_n may_v pray_v and_o yet_o yet_o not_o say_v that_o be_v not_o use_v the_o voice_n at_o all_o nor_o utter_v any_o word_n to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v of_o moses_n that_o he_o cry_v to_o god_n when_o he_o be_v silent_a and_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o spirit_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o make_v request_n to_o god_n sometime_o with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n that_o be_v not_o yea_o that_o can_v be_v express_v rom._n 8.26_o so_o that_o a_o man_n may_v make_v request_n to_o take_v special_a notice_n of_o as_o a_o remarkable_a and_o a_o memorable_a thing_n he_o do_v not_o only_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n pray_v and_o what_o his_o prayer_n be_v from_o the_o begin_n of_o it_o to_o the_o end_n but_o he_o acpuaint_v we_o also_o with_o the_o manner_n and_o the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o prayer_n he_o show_v we_o what_o his_o gesture_n be_v he_o tell_v we_o how_o he_o place_v his_o eye_n and_o how_o he_o use_v his_o voice_n in_o prayer_n these_o thing_n may_v seem_v but_o small_a matter_n and_o we_o may_v look_v upon_o they_o as_o petty_a inconsiderable_a thing_n but_o wherefore_o do_v the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o careful_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o set_v they_o down_o in_o write_v for_o the_o church_n unless_o they_o be_v of_o some_o weight_n and_o some_o consideration_n methinks_v he_o intimate_v thus_o much_o to_o we_o doctrine_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v consideration_n have_v not_o only_o of_o the_o matter_n but_o he_o fall_v upon_o his_o face_n and_o pray_v and_o sometime_o to_o look_v up_o to_o heaven_n as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o my_o text_n so_o also_o when_o he_o raise_v lazarus_n john_n 11.41_o he_o reason_n 1_o the_o very_a gesture_n or_o the_o utterance_n of_o a_o prayer_n may_v help_v sometime_o to_o raise_v and_o quicken_v the_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o prayer_n our_o heart_n be_v natural_o dead_a and_o stupid_a and_o profane_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o all_o good_a outward_a help_n to_o stir_v up_o zeal_n and_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n in_o they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n they_o have_v be_v use_v by_o the_o saint_n in_o scripture_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o their_o public_a but_o even_o in_o their_o private_a and_o their_o secret_a prayer_n when_o their_o submiss_a and_o humble_a gesture_n can_v have_v no_o influence_n upon_o other_o man_n and_o consequent_o have_v no_o other_o use_n but_o to_o help_v their_o own_o heart_n as_o daniel_n be_v exact_a in_o this_o even_o in_o his_o chamber_n and_o it_o be_v careful_o record_v dan._n 6.10_o he_o kneel_v upon_o his_o knee_n three_o time_n a_o day_n and_o pray_v he_o pray_v three_o time_n holy_a duty_n but_o rather_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n below_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o christian_a who_o shall_v be_v whole_o and_o entire_o take_v up_o with_o their_o spiritual_a service_n and_o yet_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o holy-ghost_n take_v notice_n of_o a_o gesture_n a_o cast_n of_o the_o eye_n in_o prayer_n and_o set_v it_o down_o in_o white_a and_o black_a we_o need_v not_o doubt_n for_o our_o information_n i_o must_v confess_v the_o great_a defect_n be_v on_o the_o other_o side_n man_n be_v employ_v so_o much_o about_o the_o form_n the_o surface_n and_o the_o outside_n of_o religious_a duty_n many_o time_n that_o they_o neglect_v the_o main_a business_n their_o thought_n be_v exercise_v so_o far_o about_o the_o gesture_n of_o their_o body_n the_o composure_n of_o their_o word_n the_o frame_n of_o their_o voice_n and_o the_o like_a especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a service_n the_o outward_a work_n be_v infinite_o more_o easy_a and_o there_o be_v much_o more_o ostentation_n in_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n be_v whole_o take_v up_o with_o that_o which_o they_o themselves_o can_v do_v and_o be_v do_v procure_v they_o most_o applause_n from_o other_o man_n but_o yet_o their_o place_v all_o in_o form_n and_o outside_n and_o mind_v nothing_o else_o in_o holy_a duty_n do_v not_o justify_v at_o all_o our_o run_v off_o to_o the_o extreme_a upon_o the_o other_o side_n no_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o even_o as_o hypocrite_n and_o rotten-hearted_a wretch_n may_v be_v so_o intent_n upon_o the_o outside_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o inside_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o holy_a and_o sincere_a christian_n may_v be_v so_o intent_n upon_o the_o inside_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o unto_o the_o outside_n they_o may_v so_o far_o look_v after_o the_o affection_n and_o the_o zeal_n and_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o main_a thing_n to_o be_v look_v to_o that_o they_o may_v have_v no_o thought_n at_o all_o of_o the_o external_n circumstance_n of_o their_o prayer_n the_o gesture_n or_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o utterance_n which_o be_v considerable_a notwithstanding_o as_o i_o have_v make_v it_o plain_a enough_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v whole_o careless_a of_o they_o be_v a_o fail_v yea_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o best_a of_o god_n people_n use_v 2_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n let_v i_o persuade_v you_o to_o think_v such_o outward_a circumstance_n worthy_a of_o your_o thought_n the_o very_a gesture_n and_o the_o utterance_n of_o your_o prayer_n let_v there_o be_v due_a consideration_n have_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v i_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n hinder_v you_o from_o have_v your_o especial_a eye_n on_o that_o whereon_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n be_v most_o when_o you_o be_v make_v your_o approach_n and_o address_n to_o he_o i_o mean_v the_o carriage_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n the_o inward_a fervour_n and_o humility_n affection_n and_o devotion_n of_o the_o heart_n without_o which_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v worth_a nothing_o but_o yet_o let_v not_o the_o gesture_n of_o your_o body_n the_o utterance_n of_o your_o voice_n in_o prayer_n be_v utter_o neglect_v by_o you_o concern_v both_o of_o which_o because_o i_o find_v they_o in_o my_o text_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o some_o direction_n as_o for_o the_o gesture_n of_o your_o body_n i_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o as_o you_o may_v see_v mat._n 26.39_o not_o that_o this_o gesture_n be_v peculiar_a to_o this_o piece_n of_o service_n but_o it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o civil_a usage_n of_o the_o country_n because_o this_o be_v their_o way_n of_o show_v reverence_n to_o superior_n as_o you_o may_v see_v ruth_n 2.10_o and_o therefore_o we_o do_v well_o and_o suitable_o to_o the_o direction_n and_o example_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o we_o take_v up_o such_o gesture_n only_o in_o our_o prayer_n as_o be_v usual_a in_o our_o country_n to_o express_v our_o sorrow_n and_o dejection_n or_o else_o our_o civil_a reverence_n and_o respect_n by_o those_o reverend_a gesture_n which_o we_o use_v in_o prayer_n shall_v be_v most_o observe_v in_o public_a there_o may_v more_o liberty_n be_v take_v in_o private_a and_o in_o secret_a then_o there_o may_v in_o public_a and_o open_a prayer_n both_o in_o the_o use_n of_o outward_a gesture_n and_o in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o some_o gesture_n may_v be_v use_v in_o private_a prayer_n which_o will_v become_v we_o ill_o in_o public_a in_o which_o we_o shall_v not_o go_v remarkable_o beyond_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o assembly_n for_o fear_n and_o danger_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o gesture_n on_o the_o other_o side_n may_v be_v forbear_v in_o some_o case_n in_o private_a prayer_n which_o yet_o in_o public_a ought_v not_o to_o be_v so_o for_o evermore_o in_o public_a as_o far_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a our_o gesture_n must_v be_v such_o as_o may_v express_v some_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n that_o we_o may_v honour_v god_n before_o the_o people_n and_o that_o our_o outward_a posture_n may_v not_o carry_v in_o it_o a_o appearance_n of_o a_o sleight_n esteem_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o service_n whereas_o in_o private_a there_o be_v great_a freedom_n because_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o such_o caution_n but_o three_o this_o must_v be_v continual_o heed_v both_o in_o public_a and_o in_o private_a that_o the_o gesture_n which_o we_o use_v be_v such_o as_o that_o we_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o rather_o further_o the_o spiritual_a service_n it_o be_v far_o better_a to_o abate_v of_o the_o reverence_n of_o our_o gesture_n than_o the_o affection_n of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v far_o better_o for_o a_o man_n to_o stand_v in_o prayer_n then_o that_o by_o the_o disease_n and_o trouble_v of_o the_o other_o posture_n he_o shall_v be_v distract_v and_o consequent_o his_o devotion_n and_o his_o heart_n shall_v fall_v that_o may_v be_v allow_v the_o weak_a in_o this_o regard_n which_o will_v not_o be_v convenient_a in_o the_o strong_a the_o bodily_a exercise_n be_v it_o of_o what_o kind_n it_o will_v be_v but_o a_o mean_n to_o the_o spiritual_a service_n the_o end_n be_v better_a than_o the_o mean_n and_o must_v be_v more_o regard_v than_o the_o mean_n i_o must_v not_o use_v the_o mean_n but_o for_o the_o end_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v serviceable_a to_o the_o end_n and_o much_o less_o must_v i_o use_v the_o mean_n aganist_n the_o end_n we_o must_v be_v very_o wary_a that_o the_o outward_a gesture_n especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n do_v not_o exceed_v the_o inward_a affection_n and_o that_o we_o make_v not_o show_v of_o more_o without_o then_o there_o be_v indeed_o within_o for_o if_o we_o do_v there_o be_v hypocrisy_n such_o duty_n be_v not_o do_v in_o truth_n when_o there_o be_v more_o in_o show_n and_o in_o appearance_n than_o there_o be_v in_o substance_n if_o either_o of_o the_o two_o be_v low_a than_o the_o other_o it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o outward_a expression_n be_v low_a than_o the_o inward_a affection_n then_o that_o the_o inward_a etc._n etc._n it_o be_v far_o better_a that_o the_o gesture_n come_v short_a of_o the_o heart_n then_o that_o the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o good_a to_o compass_v god_n about_o with_o lie_n mere_a show_n do_v never_o please_v in_o his_o service_n this_o for_o the_o gesture_n of_o your_o body_n when_o you_o pray_v a_o word_n or_o two_o for_o your_o direction_n touch_v the_o use_n or_o the_o omission_n of_o the_o voice_n in_o prayer_n etc._n etc._n and_o here_o the_o first_o thing_n that_o i_o offer_n be_v those_o prayer_n that_o be_v public_a whether_o in_o the_o family_n or_o the_o assembly_n wherein_o one_o be_v the_o mouth_n of_o many_o to_o the_o lord_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v vocal_a so_o be_v our_o saviour_n in_o my_o text_n you_o see_v he_o pray_v with_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n and_o therefore_o do_v no_o only_a form_n a_o prayer_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o express_v it_o with_o his_o mouth_n he_o do_v not_o only_o think_v but_o speak_v that_o they_o may_v hear_v he_o lift_v up_o his_o eye_n to_o heaven_n and_o say_v the_o voice_n be_v not_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n in_o private_a prayer_n for_o however_o man_n who_o have_v body_n be_v endue_v with_o ear_n and_o sense_n know_v not_o our_o meaning_n otherwise_o then_o by_o our_o word_n yet_o god_n who_o be_v himself_o a_o spirit_n know_v the_o meaning_n of_o our_o spirit_n sigh_n may_v find_v audience_n and_o acceptance_n with_o he_o inward_a and_o mental_a supplication_n may_v be_v in_o some_o case_n more_o fit_a than_o vocal_a but_o yet_o if_o other_o circumstance_n will_v permit_v in_o which_o your_o christian_a prudence_n must_v direct_v you_o use_v your_o voice_n we_o shall_v observe_v it_o to_o have_v be_v the_o usual_a practice_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o speak_v in_o prayer_n yea_o in_o private_a prayer_n as_o our_o saviour_n do_v mark_v 10.39_o god_n make_v the_o tongue_n aswell_o as_o other_o member_n of_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o will_v be_v serve_v with_o this_o as_o well_o as_o they_o and_o so_o the_o prophet_n david_n praise_v god_n with_o the_o best_a member_n that_o he_o have_v which_o some_o expound_v to_o be_v his_o tongue_n and_o therewith_o bless_v we_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n james_n 3.9_o it_o be_v sometime_o a_o quicken_a to_o the_o heart_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o dead_a affection_n to_o great_a fervency_n and_o zeal_n which_o by_o continue_v in_o a_o mental_a supplication_n will_v be_v apt_a case_n to_o omit_v the_o voice_n be_v more_o expedient_a and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v shut_v up_o all_o and_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o christian_a prudence_n to_o direct_v you_o to_o pitch_v upon_o that_o way_n and_o method_n of_o present_v your_o request_n to_o god_n which_o you_o will_v find_v most_o to_o conduce_v to_o the_o affectionate_a spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a performance_n of_o the_o it_o the_o object_n of_o it_o or_o the_o person_n who_o he_o present_v it_o to_o you_o see_v be_v god_n the_o father_n or_o to_o come_v a_o little_a near_o god_n his_o father_n so_o he_o style_v he_o in_o the_o entrance_n of_o his_o prayer_n father_n the_o hour_n be_v come_v etc._n etc._n and_o the_o same_o phrase_n he_o use_v all_o along_o as_o you_o shall_v see_v if_o you_o survey_v it_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o it_o to_o the_o end_n indeed_o he_o give_v he_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o holy_a and_o once_o the_o attribute_n of_o righteous_a father_n but_o this_o be_v still_o the_o 20._o and_o so_o on_o to_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o chapter_n neither_o pray_v i_o for_o these_o alone_a but_o for_o they_o also_o that_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n i_o in_o reference_n to_o he_o what_o they_o be_v both_o in_o relation_n to_o himself_o and_o to_o his_o father_n and_o where_o they_o be_v viz._n in_o such_o a_o place_n wherein_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o his_o prayer_n these_o thing_n be_v interweave_v and_o commix_v and_o we_o must_v take_v they_o in_o our_o progress_n as_o we_o find_v they_o only_o this_o will_v be_v consider_v that_o all_o of_o they_o be_v premise_v by_o our_o saviour_n before_o he_o put_v up_o one_o petition_n for_o they_o to_o show_v what_o cause_n there_o be_v why_o they_o shall_v be_v remember_v in_o his_o prayer_n begin_v we_o with_o the_o first_o thing_n which_o our_o saviour_n mention_n by_o way_n of_o preparation_n to_o the_o prayer_n which_o he_o make_v for_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n i_o have_v manifest_v thy_o name_n unto_o the_o man_n which_o thou_o give_v i_o out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o here_o you_o may_v take_v notice_n with_o i_o of_o these_o two_o particular_n first_o the_o action_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n of_o which_o he_o mind_v his_o father_n here_o i_o have_v manifest_v thy_o name_n second_o the_o description_n of_o the_o person_n to_o who_o he_o have_v make_v know_v his_o father_n name_n viz._n the_o man_n which_o he_o have_v give_v he_o out_o of_o the_o world_n for_o open_v of_o the_o former_a we_o must_v examine_v and_o resolve_v what_o be_v intend_v by_o the_o father_n name_n which_o christ_n affirm_v here_o he_o have_v make_v know_v i_o have_v manifest_v thy_o name_n some_o think_v the_o meaning_n to_o be_v only_o this_o that_o he_o have_v make_v he_o know_v to_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o father_n they_o know_v he_o as_o a_o god_n before_o and_o so_o do_v general_o all_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n but_o as_o a_o father_n in_o his_o son_n they_o have_v no_o acquaintance_n with_o he_o now_o by_o this_o name_n our_o saviour_n have_v discover_v he_o so_o that_o the_o point_n to_o be_v observe_v be_v this_o doctrine_n that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v make_v a_o absolute_a complete_a and_o full_a discovery_n of_o his_o father_n to_o his_o people_n the_o name_n of_o god_n sometime_o import_v his_o nature_n sometime_o his_o title_n sometime_o his_o attribute_n sometime_o his_o ordinance_n and_o sometime_o his_o work_n as_o i_o can_v give_v you_o instance_n of_o all_o these_o and_o all_o of_o these_o our_o saviour_n have_v lay_v open_a full_o to_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n as_o he_o profess_v to_o his_o father_n here_o i_o have_v manifest_v thy_o name_n unto_o the_o man_n which_o thou_o have_v give_v i_o out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o evangelist_n affirm_v of_o he_o joh._n 1.18_o no_o man_n all_o member_n all_o officer_n of_o all_o sort_n which_o can_v be_v intend_v of_o the_o church_n of_o corinth_n or_o any_o single_a congregation_n but_o only_o of_o the_o universal_a church_n of_o christ_n on_o earth_n there_o christ_n have_v set_v his_o minister_n not_o his_o apostle_n only_o but_o his_o ordinary_a teacher_n and_o if_o they_o be_v confine_v to_o narrow_a limit_n it_o be_v not_o proper_o by_o his_o commission_n but_o by_o a_o call_n from_o man_n or_o by_o some_o other_o secundary_a mean_n and_o as_o for_o that_o commission_n mention_v even_o now_o go_v you_o and_o teach_v all_o nation_n though_o it_o be_v give_v immediate_o to_o the_o apostle_n it_o can_v be_v restrain_v to_o the_o apostle_n be_v evident_o mean_v in_o and_o with_o they_o of_o all_o the_o minister_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n that_o shall_v succeed_v they_o in_o the_o church_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v add_v present_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n lo_o i_o be_o with_o you_o always_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n they_o be_v not_o to_o continue_v for_o their_o own_o part_n by_o many_o hundred_o year_n so_o long_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v also_o stretch_v to_o those_o who_o be_v to_o follow_v they_o in_o the_o office_n and_o work_n of_o gospel-preaching_a till_o it_o be_v publish_v universal_o to_o all_o nation_n which_o be_v not_o do_v you_o know_v by_o the_o apostle_n it_o be_v but_o begin_v by_o they_o and_o must_v be_v carry_v on_o till_o it_o be_v finish_v by_o other_o minister_n of_o christ_n in_o ever_o age_n successive_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n so_o that_o the_o point_n be_v clear_v you_o see_v christ_n do_v not_o send_v his_o minister_n particular_o or_o restrictive_o to_o any_o country_n or_o to_o any_o nation_n but_o their_o commission_n leave_v they_o free_a to_o all_o the_o world_n and_o there_o be_v two_o great_a reason_n of_o the_o point_n viz._n because_o his_o kingdom_n reason_n 1_o be_v to_o be_v erect_v and_o his_o church_n be_v to_o be_v plant_v over_o all_o the_o world_n in_o every_o country_n and_o in_o every_o nation_n under_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o jesus_n christ_n do_v send_v his_o minister_n to_o all_o the_o world_n for_o this_o purpose_n for_o the_o erect_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o plant_n of_o the_o other_o 1._o his_o kingdom_n be_v to_o be_v erect_v
his_o priesthood_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v co-extended_n and_o so_o for_o whosoever_o he_o be_v a_o priest_n to_o sacrifice_v for_o they_o also_o he_o be_v a_o priest_n to_o intercede_v as_o he_o will_v yet_o show_v mercy_n to_o they_o that_o he_o will_v yet_o prevail_v upon_o they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o come_v in_o to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o he_o will_v break_v their_o stubborn_a lust_n and_o work_v unfeigned_a faith_n in_o they_o and_o while_o we_o be_v breathe_v out_o our_o soul_n to_o god_n in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o this_o be_v we_o be_v surpize_v with_o distrustful_a thought_n that_o we_o shall_v never_o speed_v in_o this_o request_n of_o we_o god_n will_v never_o be_v entreat_v and_o so_o upon_o a_o sudden_a our_o affection_n cool_v our_o heart_n grow_v dead_a and_o flat_a within_o we_o in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o be_v it_o may_v be_v some_o encouragement_n and_o comfort_n to_o consider_v that_o jesus_n christ_n for_o aught_o we_o know_v have_v pray_v and_o may_v be_v pray_v to_o the_o father_n for_o the_o very_a same_o person_n though_o for_o the_o present_a he_o believe_v not_o yet_o he_o may_v be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o shall_v believe_v as_o be_v appoint_v to_o believe_v in_o aftertime_n and_o then_o he_o be_v as_o you_o have_v hear_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n so_o that_o the_o prayer_n that_o we_o make_v for_o he_o be_v second_v by_o christ_n in_o heaven_n while_o we_o be_v ask_v such_o a_o child_n or_o such_o a_o friend_n of_o god_n it_o may_v be_v christ_n be_v ask_v he_o or_o she_o of_o god_n too_o according_a to_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o father_n with_o the_o son_n ask_v of_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v thou_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o not_o grow_v cold_a or_o faint_a in_o christ_n alone_o the_o next_o and_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o it_o sol._n to_o this_o because_o it_o be_v compound_v as_o it_o be_v of_o divers_a thing_n i_o must_v answer_v divers_a way_n 1._o christ_n who_o be_v indeed_o the_o proper_a object_n of_o this_o justify_v faith_n or_o second_o the_o word_n of_o god_n although_o it_o may_v in_o some_o respect_n be_v call_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n that_o justifi_v yet_o not_o qua_fw-la justificat_fw-la not_o as_o it_o justifi_v as_o the_o school_n speak_v it_o be_v true_a that_o justify_v faith_n believe_v other_o thing_n propound_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o faith_n as_o it_o justifi_v lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n and_o he_o only_o not_o know_v any_o other_o thing_n here_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v 2._o as_o for_o the_o second_o thing_n propound_v in_o the_o querie_n true_a it_o be_v that_o god_n the_o father_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o faith_n i_o mean_v the_o faith_n which_o justify_v but_o not_o the_o next_o and_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o it_o christ_n must_v be_v first_o lay_v hold_v upon_o and_o god_n in_o christ_n such_o trust_n have_v we_o through_o christ_n in_o god_n say_v
