consider_v much_o of_o his_o force_n be_v take_v away_o by_o sustein_v and_o bear_v it_o at_o the_o say_a end_n so_o that_o when_o a_o forcible_a blow_n come_v he_o have_v not_o sufficient_a power_n to_o beat_v it_o off_o and_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o pike_n be_v a_o long_a straight_a line_n which_o have_v his_o motion_n in_o the_o head_n or_o beginning_n thereof_o which_o motion_n be_v it_o straight_a line_n as_o also_o for_o that_o the_o arm_n be_v weaken_v with_o the_o poise_n of_o the_o pike_n do_v shake_v and_o deliver_v it_o unstedfast_o therefore_o for_o the_o avoid_n of_o these_o two_o inconvenience_n the_o pike_n must_v be_v bear_v within_o a_o arm_n length_n of_o the_o say_a heel_n or_o blunt_a end_n in_o which_o place_n it_o be_v sufficient_o distant_a from_o hurt_n &_o with_o the_o point_n then_o any_o other_o short_a weapon_n it_o be_v most_o manifest_a that_o the_o pike_n make_v great_a passage_n with_o his_o point_n than_o any_o other_o weapon_n and_o the_o twohand_a sword_n more_o than_o the_o ordinary_a sword_n &_o the_o sword_n more_o than_o the_o dagger_n and_o among_o all_o weapon_n this_o be_v generaly_a true_a that_o the_o long_o the_o weapon_n be_v the_o great_a passage_n it_o make_v with_o the_o point_n and_o the_o great_a blow_n with_o the_o edge_n neither_o do_v this_o so_o chance_n because_o the_o weapon_n be_v more_o heavy_a neither_o the_o one_o end_n move_v from_o the_o other_o shall_v always_o move_v circuler_o so_o that_o the_o arm_n can_v otherwise_o move_v except_o when_o it_o be_v bow_v and_o will_v then_o make_v itself_o straight_o again_o the_o which_o motion_n also_o be_v doubtful_a whether_o it_o be_v straight_o yea_o or_o no._n therefore_o imagine_v that_o on_o the_o movable_a part_n of_o this_o arm_n or_o to_o the_o end_n of_o this_o blow_n there_o be_v never_o any_o time_n give_v to_o the_o enemy_n to_o enter_v by_o reason_n that_o the_o point_n stand_v always_o direct_o against_o he_o but_o in_o the_o discharge_n of_o this_o blow_n a_o man_n must_v remember_v to_o draw_v his_o left_a foot_n near_o his_o right_a foot_n and_o then_o to_o increase_v forwards_o with_o the_o right_a foot_n &_o deliver_v it_o as_o forcible_o as_o he_o may_v stay_v himself_o in_o the_o low_a ward_n true_a it_o be_v that_o he_o may_v also_o deliver_v a_o right_n and_o reverse_a edgeblowe_v at_o the_o head_n or_o else_o strike_v downwards_o from_o the_o wrist_n of_o the_o hand_n but_o because_o he_o be_v notable_a to_o turn_v his_o wrist_n in_o so_o small_a a_o compass_n in_o the_o discharge_n of_o a_o edgeblowe_v either_o high_a or_o low_o but_o that_o the_o point_n of_o the_o sword_n will_v be_v out_o of_o the_o straight_a line_n by_o the_o length_n of_o a_o sword_n in_o the_o which_o before_o it_o return_v the_o enemy_n have_v sufficient_a time_n to_o strike_v therefore_o i_o will_v not_o counsel_v any_o man_n to_o use_v they_o either_o alone_a or_o both_o together_o but_o yet_o between_o two_o thrust_n they_o may_v be_v very_o well_o use_v together_o by_o continue_v the_o one_o after_o the_o other_o though_o they_o be_v void_v until_o the_o last_o thrust_v the_o which_o do_v safe_o behind_o he_o towards_o the_o rightside_n to_o the_o end_n the_o blow_n may_v be_v the_o long_o which_o be_v the_o long_a blow_n of_o all_o other_o but_o if_o the_o enemy_n void_a this_o in_o like_a case_n which_o be_v very_o difficult_a than_o he_o must_v sudden_o turn_v the_o reverse_a from_o his_o elbow_n increase_a therewithal_o a_o slope_n pace_n with_o the_o hinder_a foot_n and_o it_o be_v first_o stroke_n and_o increase_n the_o enemy_n be_v not_o hit_v in_o the_o eye_n it_o shall_v be_v to_o small_a purpose_n therefore_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v use_v the_o crooked_a or_o slope_v pace_n he_o must_v present_o increase_v a_o other_o straight_o pace_n the_o which_o do_v so_o much_o gather_v upon_o the_o enemy_n that_o if_o he_o will_v strike_v he_o in_o the_o breast_n he_o may_v towards_o the_o right_a side_n behind_o to_o the_o end_n that_o the_o thrust_n may_v be_v lengthen_v and_o his_o body_n thereby_o cover_v consider_v he_o shall_v then_o stand_v right_a behind_o his_o sword_n this_o manner_n of_o defence_n may_v serve_v to_o ward_v all_o right_a blow_n of_o the_o edge_n deliver_v from_o the_o high_a ward_n and_o it_o be_v the_o best_a way_n of_o all_o other_o because_o it_o do_v not_o only_a ward_n but_o also_o in_o one_o and_o the_o selfsame_o time_n both_o strike_v and_o defend_v safe_o this_o manner_n of_o thrust_n be_v call_v the_o reverse_a thrust_n but_o if_o one_o will_v ward_v a_o reverse_a he_o must_v oppose_v the_o edge_n of_o his_o sword_n without_o and_o therewithal_o increase_v a_o slope_n pace_n &_o then_o deliver_v a_o thrust_n with_o handle_v himself_o to_o encounter_v any_o danger_n but_o return_v to_o my_o purpose_n to_o wit_n of_o the_o way_n how_o to_o defend_v which_o be_v to_o carry_v the_o weapon_n opposite_a this_o manner_n be_v common_o use_v but_o be_v not_o so_o profitable_a be_v use_v as_o it_o be_v and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o when_o man_n endeavour_n themselves_o to_o encounter_v or_o oppose_v themselves_o against_o the_o weapon_n which_o come_v to_o strike_v they_o neither_o make_v bold_a that_o their_o weapon_n can_v neither_o know_v how_o it_o shall_v defend_v they_o withdraw_v their_o body_n with_o their_o foot_n and_o commit_v all_o these_o fault_n follow_v 1_o first_o by_o withdraw_v of_o themselves_o they_o encounter_v the_o enemy_n sword_n towards_o the_o point_n in_o which_o place_n it_o bear_v most_o force_n and_o therefore_o with_o great_a difficulty_n they_o sustain_v the_o blow_n 2_o another_o be_v if_o they_o will_v strike_v the_o enemy_n of_o force_n they_o must_v return_v their_o foot_n and_o weapon_n thither_o where_o they_o be_v before_o and_o yet_o increase_v forward_o somewhat_o more_o if_o they_o will_v strong_o strike_v he_o and_o in_o this_o they_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n that_o the_o enemy_n may_v not_o only_o easy_o defend_v but_o also_o very_o well_o and_o safe_o strike_v to_o he_o than_o that_o will_v use_v this_o manner_n of_o defence_n without_o danger_n it_o be_v necessary_a and_o needful_a when_o he_o encounter_v the_o enemy_n sword_n that_o he_o do_v not_o withdraw_v himself_o but_o with_o his_o left_a foot_n increase_v a_o crooked_a or_o slope_v pace_n forwards_o the_o which_o shall_v encounter_v the_o sword_n which_o before_o be_v come_v strike_v with_o the_o edge_n on_o that_o part_n thereof_o in_o which_o it_o have_v least_o power_n to_o offend_v and_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_v easy_o withstand_v the_o blow_n but_o if_o the_o sword_n come_v with_o a_o thrust_n he_o must_v find_v it_o and_o beat_v it_o aside_o for_o every_o little_a motion_n be_v sufficient_a to_o drive_v the_o point_n far_o enough_o from_o danger_n of_o hurt_n and_o there_o be_v this_o advantage_n get_v aswell_o in_o the_o blow_n of_o the_o edge_n as_o of_o the_o point_n that_o the_o body_n be_v void_v out_o of_o the_o straight_a line_n by_o mean_n of_o the_o say_a slope_n pace_n and_o it_o stand_v so_o apt_a and_o so_o near_o to_o offend_v the_o enemy_n that_o one_o may_v strike_v in_o the_o very_a instant_n neither_o can_v the_o enemy_n so_o much_o withdraw_v himself_o as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o avoid_v the_o stroke_n for_o a_o man_n have_v to_o use_v the_o straight_a pace_n of_o the_o right_a foot_n to_o follow_v the_o enemy_n which_o pace_n be_v so_o strong_a and_o so_o swift_a that_o the_o enemy_n may_v not_o avoid_v it_o and_o because_o this_o manner_n of_o defence_n in_o my_o opinion_n seem_v to_o be_v most_o sure_a and_o short_a i_o will_v use_v it_o above_o all_o other_o there_o be_v another_o way_n to_o wit_n when_o one_o perceive_v the_o enemy_n sword_n in_o the_o delivery_n of_o a_o edgeblowe_v to_o fetch_v a_o great_a compass_n he_o may_v strike_v he_o before_o the_o fall_n of_o his_o sword_n with_o a_o thrust_n or_o else_o when_o the_o enemy_n thrust_v but_o yet_o spend_v many_o time_n in_o do_v thereof_o he_o may_v likewise_o strike_v he_o in_o as_o short_a time_n as_o may_v be_v the_o which_o manner_n of_o defend_v be_v most_o profitable_a &_o perchance_o the_o better_a of_o the_o two_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o will_v run_v himself_o headlong_o upon_o the_o weapon_n or_o that_o perceive_v himself_o ready_a to_o be_v strike_v will_v not_o sudden_o draw_v back_o and_o withhold_v that_o blow_n which_o he_o have_v already_o prepare_v to_o discharge_v and_o although_o there_o be_v some_o who_o be_v strike_v run_v rash_o on_o yet_o general_o man_n will_v not_o so_o do_v albeit_o they_o be_v strike_v when_o they_o be_v most_o collorick_a but_o will_v when_o they_o be_v strike_v or_o wound_v give_v back_o and_o be_v dismay_v and_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o blood_n which_o go_v from_o they_o always_o more_o &_o more_o be_v weaken_v but_o yet_o when_o they_o be_v so_o wound_v it_o shall_v be_v for_o their_o profit_n to_o be_v well_o advise_v and_o not_o to_o discomfort_v themselves_o for_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o blow_n but_o to_o bear_v it_o patient_o for_o that_o which_o they_o do_v in_o disdain_n and_o fury_n shall_v turn_v they_o to_o much_o displeasure_n 3_o the_o three_o manner_n of_o defence_n be_v when_o the_o body_n void_v out_o of_o the_o straight_a line_n towards_o this_o or_o that_o side_n but_o this_o be_v seldom_o use_v alone_a &_o by_o itself_o but_o rather_o accompany_v with_o the_o oppose_a of_o the_o weapon_n or_o with_o the_o second_o manner_n of_o defence_n aforesaid_a if_o it_o be_v use_v alone_o the_o manner_n be_v to_o let_v slip_n the_o blow_n and_o to_o strike_v the_o enemy_n in_o the_o same_o time_n that_o he_o be_v over_o reach_v in_o his_o blow_n the_o method_n which_o shall_v be_v use_v in_o handle_v the_o chapter_n follow_v forasmuch_o as_o i_o ought_v in_o the_o chapter_n follow_v to_o teach_v more_o particular_o all_o the_o blow_n and_o defence_n in_o every_o ward_n to_o the_o end_n that_o no_o man_n do_v marvel_v why_o i_o do_v not_o perform_v the_o same_o and_o do_v think_v that_o the_o instruction_n be_v therefore_o imperfect_a i_o think_v good_a because_o my_o purpose_n be_v now_o to_o entreat_v of_o that_o only_a which_o pertain_v to_o true_a art_n to_o the_o which_o the_o blow_n
