first_o drink_v no_o long_o practice_n water_n this_o be_v no_o positive_a prohibition_n of_o the_o use_n of_o water_n but_o it_o have_v a_o particular_a reference_n to_o timothy_n practice_n which_o must_v be_v consider_v for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o apostle_n meaning_n it_o will_v seem_v that_o timothy_n have_v heretofore_o make_v use_n of_o no_o other_o sort_n of_o drink_n but_o water_n not_o certain_o that_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o procure_v wine_n to_o himself_o nor_o yet_o from_o any_o scruple_n about_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o use_v that_o liquor_n for_o so_o great_a a_o person_n as_o timothy_n be_v to_o who_o st._n paul_n give_v so_o high_a eulogy_n every_o where_o throughout_o his_o epistle_n and_o who_o he_o think_v worthy_a of_o the_o trust_n of_o the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n can_v not_o be_v so_o ignorant_a as_o not_o to_o know_v that_o every_o creature_n of_o god_n be_v good_a and_o nothing_o to_o be_v refuse_v if_o it_o be_v receive_v with_o thanksgiving_n no_o doubt_n st._n paul_n teach_v he_o early_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v not_o meat_n and_o drink_n but_o righteousness_n and_o peace_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o be_v so_o teach_v he_o will_v be_v far_o from_o place_v religion_n in_o such_o kind_n of_o abstinence_n but_o his_o continue_a use_n of_o water_n be_v either_o because_o he_o be_v so_o bring_v up_o by_o his_o parent_n or_o out_o of_o his_o great_a temperance_n and_o sobriety_n and_o that_o by_o this_o mean_n in_o imitation_n of_o his_o great_a master_n st._n paul_n he_o may_v keep_v his_o body_n under_o and_o bring_v it_o into_o subjection_n lest_o when_o he_o preach_v to_o other_o he_o himself_o shall_v be_v a_o castaway_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n ix_o 27._o but_o whether_o upon_o this_o or_o any_o other_o motive_n it_o be_v that_o timothy_n do_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d continual_o drink_v water_n st._n paul_n observe_v that_o it_o do_v prove_v prejudicial_a to_o his_o health_n and_o either_o occasion_v or_o increase_v those_o bodily_a distemper_n he_o be_v so_o much_o subject_n to_o and_o therefore_o he_o advise_v he_o here_o to_o forbear_v of_o mortification_n the_o primitive_a christian_n keep_v their_o body_n under_o a_o severe_a discipline_n which_o be_v now_o adays_o wear_v altogether_o out_o of_o fashion_n we_o be_v not_o so_o far_o behind_o they_o in_o time_n as_o we_o fall_v short_a of_o their_o strictness_n and_o severity_n which_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o come_v so_o short_a of_o their_o devotion_n and_o piety_n and_o those_o other_o christian_a virtue_n which_o render_v they_o illustrious_a a_o account_n of_o their_o severity_n and_o mortification_n will_v be_v think_v fabulous_a man_n accustom_v to_o such_o softness_n and_o looseness_n as_o we_o of_o this_o age_n will_v hardly_o be_v induce_v to_o believe_v it_o and_o if_o any_o of_o they_o be_v return_v back_o to_o this_o world_n they_o will_v have_v as_o great_a difficulty_n of_o believe_v we_o to_o be_v christian_n see_v we_o work_v so_o much_o the_o will_n of_o the_o gentile_n and_o walk_v in_o lasciviousness_n lust_n excess_n of_o wine_n revel_n banquet_n and_o do_v run_v easy_o and_o forward_o as_o they_o do_v to_o the_o same_o excess_n of_o riot_n and_o indeed_o if_o our_o ease_n voluptuousness_n and_o loose_a manner_n of_o live_v be_v suitable_a enough_o to_o the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n and_o consistent_a enough_o with_o the_o grace_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o fit_v one_o for_o it_o than_o paul_n and_o timothy_n and_o all_o the_o primitive_a christian_n be_v fool_n and_o madman_n as_o a_o italian_a monk_n say_v once_o witty_o preach_v before_o two_o cardinal_n but_o the_o imputation_n of_o folly_n fall_v certain_o on_o we_o and_o not_o on_o these_o great_a light_n of_o the_o world_n our_o apostle_n think_v chamber_v and_o wantonness_n gluttony_n and_o drunkenness_n only_o agreeable_a with_o the_o night_n of_o heathenish_a ignorance_n but_o we_o practise_v they_o in_o the_o broad_a day_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o make_v these_o work_n of_o darkness_n face_n the_o clear_a sunshine_n so_o little_a be_v the_o man_n of_o this_o age_n acquaint_v with_o abstinence_n and_o mortification_n that_o i_o fear_v they_o will_v brand_v a_o man_n with_o heresy_n that_o will_v recommend_v they_o there_o be_v no_o
