even_o that_o he_o alone_o may_v be_v judge_n that_o he_o may_v shine_v above_o we_o that_o he_o may_v determine_v upon_o the_o lightness_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o each_o offence_n but_o true_o pacify_v but_o by_o the_o drown_n of_o jonas_n in_o the_o sea_n although_o he_o respect_v a_o deep_a matter_n as_o we_o shall_v hereafter_o see_v but_o this_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v worthy_a bring_v back_o the_o ship_n christian_n but_o to_o what_o end_n even_o that_o they_o may_v spare_v the_o life_n of_o the_o man_n who_o have_v already_o confess_v himself_o to_o be_v guilty_a before_o god_n and_o for_o his_o offence_n that_o tempest_n to_o be_v raise_v up_o which_o threaten_a shipwreck_n to_o they_o all_o but_o he_o say_v that_o they_o can_v not_o because_o the_o sea_n be_v troublesome_a as_o already_o we_o see_v in_o the_o lecture_n yesterdaye_fw-mi now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o next_o verse_n they_o cry_v say_v he_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o say_a we_o beseech_v thou_o fall_v upon_o the_o shipman_n when_o they_o know_v jonas_n to_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o true_a god_n and_o yet_o they_o see_v jonas_n for_o one_o fault_n to_o stand_v before_o the_o tribunal_n seat_n of_o god_n and_o be_v now_o to_o be_v punish_v this_o i_o say_v they_o see_v and_o yet_o they_o desire_v to_o save_v he_o from_o punishment_n this_o place_n teach_v that_o to_o abhor_v cruelty_n be_v even_o by_o nature_n graft_v in_o all_o man_n for_o howsoever_o many_o man_n be_v cruel_a and_o blood_n thirsty_a because_o it_o be_v graft_v in_o they_o by_o nature_n yet_o than_o the_o word_n admit_v a_o contrary_a sense_n and_o exposition_n even_o that_o the_o speech_n of_o jonas_n by_o and_o by_o come_v to_o the_o king_n ear_n and_o i_o rather_o incline_v to_o this_o exposition_n and_o judgement_n for_o jonas_n seem_v exegeticallie_o or_o expositinal_o to_o show_v how_o the_o ninevite_n put_v on_o sackcloth_n this_o he_o speak_v brief_o vers_fw-la 5._o and_o now_o he_o utter_v the_o same_o more_o large_o and_o we_o know_v that_o this_o order_n be_v much_o use_v among_o the_o hebrew_n to_o t●●th_n the_o sum_n of_o thing_n in_o few_o word_n and_o afterward_o to_o add_v the_o explication_n therefore_o because_o in_o the_o five_o verse_n jonas_n say_v that_o the_o ninevite_n be_v cover_v with_o sackcloth_n and_o proclaim_v a_o fast_a and_o now_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o seem_v to_o express_v more_o evident_o how_o this_o be_v do_v even_o by_o the_o king_n commandment_n and_o certain_o it_o be_v credible_a that_o the_o fast_o be_v not_o command_v in_o the_o king_n city_n appoint_v only_o by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o common_a people_n when_o as_o the_o king_n be_v there_o and_o his_o counselor_n because_o therefore_o it_o be_v more_o agreeable_a that_o the_o edict_n concern_v the_o fast_a proceed_v from_o the_o king_n therefore_o i_o willing_o do_v so_o ioygne_a these_o two_o verse_n together_o that_o the_o first_o may_v signify_v the_o fruit_n that_o follow_v of_o the_o preach_n of_o jonas_n and_o the_o latter_a may_v be_v add_v expositive_o because_o he_o declare_v the_o same_o thing_n more_o full_o now_o jonas_n say_v that_o therefore_o be_v the_o fast_o indict_v of_o the_o ninevite_n because_o the_o king_n with_o this_o counsel_n have_v so_o decree_v and_o so_o i_o do_v interpret_v the_o hebrew_n word_n by_o the_o preterpluperfect_a tense_n thus_o for_o the_o speech_n have_v come_v unto_o the_o king_n for_o the_o order_n and_o manner_n jonas_n now_o set_v down_o how_o the_o ninevite_n proclaim_v afast_n even_o because_o the_o king_n be_v admonish_v of_o the_o sermon_n of_o jonas_n and_o by_o and_o by_o call_v together_o his_o counselor_n this_o therefore_o be_v a_o public_a edict_n and_o not_o some_o rash_a raise_v motion_n as_o sometime_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v he_o say_v that_o the_o edict_n be_v publish_v by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n and_o of_o his_o counsel_n or_o noble_n although_o some_o take_v the_o hebrew_n word_n for_o order_n of_o allowance_n the_o word_n signify_v to_o taste_v as_o jonas_n afterward_o use_v the_o word_n but_o here_o it_o be_v take_v by_o a_o metaphor_n for_o counsel_n and_o i_o do_v think_v that_o this_o sense_n better_o agree_v to_o this_o place_n but_o now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o matter_n itself_o that_o the_o king_n of_o so_o royal_a a_o city_n jonas_n yea_o the_o chief_a monarchy_n in_o those_o day_n yield_v himself_o so_o obedient_a at_o the_o preach_n of_o jonas_n it_o be_v sure_o worthy_a the_o note_n we_o see_v that_o king_n wax_v proud_a oftentimes_o because_o they_o think_v that_o they_o be_v exempt_v from_o the_o common_a fort_n of_o man_n and_o so_o lyfte_v they_o up_o themselves_o above_o law_n and_o hereby_o it_o come_v that_o they_o will_v make_v all_o thing_n lawful_a unto_o they_o and_o then_o while_o they_o let_v the_o reign_n lose_v to_o their_o own_o lust_n they_o take_v it_o grievous_o to_o be_v admonish_v or_o reprehend_v yea_o though_o it_o be_v by_o their_o equal_n but_o jonas_n a_o poor_a man_n &_o a_o foreigner_n that_o he_o therefore_o so_o affect_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o king_n by_o it_o certain_o appear_v the_o secret_a power_n of_o god_n which_o he_o place_v in_o his_o word_n as_o often_o as_o so_o it_o please_v he_o god_n true_o by_o the_o preach_n of_o his_o word_n work_v not_o equal_o that_o be_v keep_v not_o always_o one_o order_n or_o rule_v but_o when_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o he_o so_o effectual_o touch_v he_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n that_o the_o good_a success_n that_o the_o word_n shall_v have_v pass_v all_o man_n imagination_n ▪_o even_o as_o in_o this_o place_n a_o worthy_a example_n of_o the_o same_o be_v set_v before_o we_o for_o who_o will_v have_v say_v that_o a_o profane_a king_n who_o live_v always_o as_o he_o list_v in_o who_o no_o true_a and_o sincere_a religion_n do_v reign_v in_o one_o moment_n can_v so_o be_v tame_v and_o more_o lay_v aside_o all_o glory_n of_o his_o kingdom_n will_v prostrate_v himself_o in_o the_o dust_n and_o put_v on_o sackcloth_n we_o see_v therefore_o that_o god_n not_o only_o speak_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o jonas_n but_o also_o thereto_o add_v efficacy_n unto_o his_o word_n but_o this_o be_v to_o be_v call_v to_o mind_v which_o christ_n speak_v 4●_o the_o man_n of_o nineveh_n shall_v rise_v up_o in_o the_o judgement_n against_o this_o people_n for_o they_o repent_v at_o the_o preach_n of_o jonas_n and_o behold_v a_o great_a than_o jonas_n be_v here_o day_o christ_n utter_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o gospel_n for_o although_o he_o be_v not_o after_o a_o visible_a manner_n conversant_a here_o among_o we_o yet_o he_o it_o be_v which_o by_o his_o minister_n do_v speak_v if_o we_o contemn_v this_o doctrine_n how_o shall_v our_o obstinacy_n and_o hardness_n of_o heart_n be_v excusable_a when_o the_o ninevite_n which_o never_o taste_v any_o true_a doctrine_n of_o piety_n which_o be_v endue_v of_o jonas_n be_v very_o sharp_a for_o he_o denounce_v destruction_n to_o that_o most_o mighty_a city_n and_o this_o might_n by_o and_o by_o have_v bring_v the_o king_n mind_n unto_o madness_n and_o fury_n that_o therefore_o so_o gentle_o and_o with_o so_o small_a ado_n he_o be_v humble_v for_o certainty_n be_v a_o most_o rare_a alteration_n and_o change_n we_o have_v therefore_o a_o notable_a example_n of_o repentance_n that_o the_o king_n can_v so_o soon_o forget_v himself_o and_o his_o dignity_n and_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o lay_v aside_o his_o precious_a ro●be●_n he_o put_v sackcloth_n upon_o he_o now_o as_o touch_v fast_v and_o sackcloth_n it_o be_v certain_a and_o true_a that_o repentance_n consist_v not_o in_o these_o outward_a thing_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o joel._n for_o god_n care_v not_o for_o ceremony_n and_o whatsoever_o be_v glorious_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n the_o same_o be_v frivolous_a in_o his_o sight_n for_o he_o require_v the_o sincerity_n of_o the_o heart_n repentance_n therefore_o look_v what_o jonas_n here_o declare_v of_o fast_v &_o other_o exercise_n aught_o to_o be_v refer_v unto_o the_o lawful_a end_n why_o they_o be_v use_v even_o that_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o ninevite_n will_v evident_o declare_v that_o they_o be_v culpable_a and_o worthy_o call_v before_o the_o judgement_n seat_n of_o god_n and_o next_o that_o they_o humble_o desire_v the_o favour_n of_o the_o judge_n fast_v therefore_o and_o sackcloth_n be_v only_o but_o a_o outward_a profession_n of_o repentance_n for_o if_o a_o man_n all_o his_o life_n long_o fast_o and_o put_v on_o sackcloth_n &_o wallow_v in_o the_o dust_n &_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n ioygn_v not_o with_o all_o the_o sincere_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n he_o do_v nothing_o else_o but_o jest_n with_o god_n and_o trifle_n in_o his_o sight_n therefore_o of_o themselves_o these_o outward_a exercise_n shall_v be_v of_o small_a moment_n except_o the_o inward_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n go_v before_o they_o and_o move_v man_n so_o to_o declare_v such_o testimony_n of_o their_o inward_a mind_n furthermore_o as_o often_o as_o the_o scripture_n make_v any_o mention_v of_o fast_v of_o ash_n end_n and_o sackcloth_n we_o must_v mark_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v set_v forth_o unto_o we_o as_o external_a and_o outward_a sign_n of_o repentance_n which_o if_o they_o be_v false_a nothing_o else_o do_v they_o but_o provoke_v the_o ire_n of_o god_n but_o if_o they_o be_v true_a they_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o end_n and_o not_o that_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v of_o force_n to_o pacify_v god_n ire_n or_o to_o put_v away_o our_o sin_n now_o if_o any_o man_n will_v demand_v whether_o repentance_n bring_v with_o it_o fast_v sackcloth_n and_o ash_n the_o answer_n be_v easy_a that_o the_o faithful_a all_o their_o whole_a life_n ought_v to_o meditate_v repentance_n therefore_o except_o each_o of_o we_o exercise_v himself_o in_o this_o continual_a study_n even_o that_o he_o renounce_v both_o himself_o

they_o will_v repent_v and_o then_o it_o follow_v that_o my_o preach_n shall_v be_v vain_a and_o sure_o god_n will_v not_o be_v contrary_a to_o himself_o but_o will_v show_v forth_o a_o example_n of_o his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n when_o he_o shall_v forgive_v this_o people_n again_o let_v we_o note_v that_o we_o do_v wicked_o when_o as_o without_o judgement_n we_o follow_v our_o zeal_n for_o there_o be_v some_o blind_a fury_n which_o then_o carry_v we_o away_o therefore_o although_o a_o thousand_o absurdity_n do_v come_v in_o our_o head_n when_o god_n command_v any_o thing_n yet_o be_v our_o eye_n to_o be_v close_v as_o it_o be_v and_o always_o we_o ought_v to_o follow_v on_o in_o the_o course_n of_o our_o vocation_n because_o he_o will_v so_o moderate_v all_o event_n that_o they_o all_o shall_v tend_v to_o his_o glory_n it_o be_v not_o our_o part_n here_o to_o be_v to_o curious_a but_o this_o be_v our_o best_a means_n that_o we_o let_v the_o event_n of_o thing_n alone_o unto_o god_n it_o be_v our_o part_n indeed_o to_o fear_n and_o to_o be_v careful_a but_o with_o all_o this_o our_o care_n ought_v to_o submit_n itself_o unto_o god_n so_o that_o it_o ought_v to_o suffice_v we_o even_o to_o pray_v this_o be_v the_o sum_n now_o that_o he_o say_v again_o that_o god_n do_v repent_v he_o of_o evil_a we_o have_v expound_v it_o a_o little_a before_o even_o that_o although_o he_o have_v stretch_v out_o his_o hand_n yet_o he_o pluck_v it_o in_o again_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o find_v any_o repentance_n in_o man_n for_o evil_a here_o be_v take_v for_o punishment_n god_n therefore_o although_o he_o may_v and_o that_o worthy_o lie_v upon_o man_n extreme_a pain_n and_o punishment_n he_o yet_o suspend_v his_o judgement_n and_o if_o they_o run_v unto_o he_o with_o true_a repentance_n by_o and_o by_o he_o be_v pacify_v and_o appease_v and_o this_o be_v the_o repentance_n of_o god_n even_o that_o what_o ever_o punishment_n and_o evil_a man_n have_v deserve_v he_o do_v as_o if_o he_o fear_v not_o death_n but_o have_v put_v of_o all_o fear_n free_a and_o at_o liberty_n may_v offer_v himself_o unto_o god_n but_o i_o do_v not_o think_v that_o the_o affection_n of_o jonas_n be_v not_o so_o lofty_a there_o be_v no_o vers_fw-la 2_o doubt_n in_o deed_n as_o we_o have_v already_o say_v that_o he_o yet_o retain_v some_o spark_n of_o godliness_n in_o he_o and_o i_o say_v that_o this_o thing_n be_v sufficient_o prove_v but_o o●s_v by_o the_o word_n of_o pray_v for_o if_o jonas_n have_v burst_v out_o into_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o desperate_a man_n this_o sure_o have_v be_v no_o prayer_n when_o as_o therefore_o he_o pray_v notwithstanding_o he_o so_o speak_v it_o follow_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o voice_n of_o desperation_n but_o of_o to_o much_o anger_n or_o indignation_n wherein_o jonas_n do_v not_o moderate_v himself_o ▪_o final_o this_o prayer_n proceed_v of_o a_o godly_a &_o holy_a zeal_n but_o jonas_n in_o the_o manner_n itself_o or_o in_o go_v forward_o do_v offend_v for_o he_o be_v even_o paste_v himself_o ▪_o when_o he_o prefer_v death_n before_o life_n say_v thou_o lord_n take_v i_o away_o first_o it_o can_v not_o be_v without_o fault_n that_o he_o be_v so_o headlong_o carry_v to_o the_o desire_n of_o death_n death_n for_o it_o be_v not_o in_o we_o to_o pass_v out_o of_o this_o world_n but_o as_o long_o as_o god_n retain_v and_o keep_v we_o in_o this_o stay_n wherein_o he_o have_v place_v we_o with_o quiet_a mind_n we_o ought_v to_o abide_v who_o so_o therefore_o he_o be_v that_o with_o so_o great_a ardoncie_n make_v haste_n to_o death_n 1.25_o without_o do_v able_a he_o offend_v god_n paul_n see_v that_o death_n be_v to_o be_v wish_v to_o himself_o but_o again_o when_o he_o perceive_v that_o his_o labour_n be_v profitable_a to_o the_o church_n he_o be_v ●ntent_a with_o his_o lot_n and_o prefer_v the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n before_o his_o desire_n and_o so_o be_v he_o ready_a both_o to_o live_v &_o die_v unto_o god._n jonas_n but_o jonas_n cantrarie_a now_o say_v he_o take_v away_o my_o soul_n this_o be_v one_o fault_n another_o be_v when_o as_o he_o desire_v to_o die_v because_o god_n will_v spare_v the_o ninevite_n although_o he_o be_v touch_v with_o some_o sorrow_n yet_o ought_v he_o not_o to_o ●a●e_v go_v or_o rather_o to_o have_v burst_v out_o thus_o far_o that_o in_o the_o loathe_n of_o his_o life_n he_o shall_v wish_v after_o death_n but_o here_o hence_o we_o learn_v when_o once_o man_n let_v lose_v the_o rain_n to_o unadvised_a zeal_n whether_o they_o be_v carry_v jonas_n the_o holy_a prophet_n which_o of_o late_o be_v tame_v and_o subdue_v with_o so_o hard_a chastisement_n yet_o be_v carry_v away_o headlong_o even_o unto_o the_o desire_n of_o death_n &_o why_o because_o he_o think_v that_o it_o fall_v out_o ill_a that_o he_o have_v denounce_v destuction_n unto_o the_o ninevite_n and_o yet_o the_o city_n continue_v safe_a this_o example_n ought_v to_o praise_n but_o he_o will_v here_o declare_v that_o he_o rash_o have_v judge_v of_o that_o work_n of_o god_n well_o jonas_n here_o confess_v his_o foolishness_n let_v therefore_o his_o experience_n be_v a_o lesson_n unto_o we_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o preposterous_a then_o according_a to_o our_o judgement_n to_o determine_v this_o or_o that_o because_o this_o be_v when_o all_o be_v do_v the_o true_a wisdom_n to_o submit_v ourselves_o whole_o to_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n now_o if_o any_o man_n here_o will_v move_v a_o direction_n death_n whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o wish_v for_o death_n i_o answer_v brief_o that_o death_n be_v not_o to_o be_v wish_v for_o in_o the_o loathe_n of_o life_n that_o be_v one_o thing_n i_o mean_v that_o to_o be_v loathe_v of_o life_n when_o either_o poverty_n or_o hunger_n or_o ignominy_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n do_v make_v life_n hateful_a or_o odious_a unto_o we_o but_o if_o any_o man_n in_o the_o irksomeness_n and_o in_o the_o dyslyke_a of_o his_o shyve_n be_v gréeve_v to_o remain_v on_o the_o earth_n according_a as_o paul_n say_v oh_o miserable_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n he_o for_o certainty_n shall_v conceive_v a_o holy_a and_o godly_a desire_n so_o that_o that_o obedience_n whereof_o i_o speak_v he_o add_v even_o that_o his_o affection_n burst_v not_o out_o as_o it_o be_v in_o despite_n of_o god_n but_o who_o so_o be_v so_o affect_v let_v he_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v stay_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n as_o long_o as_o it_o please_v he_o again_o if_o any_o man_n wish_v for_o death_n because_o he_o escape_v himself_o in_o time_n to_o come_v or_o dread_v to_o undertake_v any_o office_n or_o charge_n he_o verily_o strive_v with_o god_n and_o such_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o jonas_n he_o say_v that_o death_n be_v more_o welcome_a than_o life_n but_o why_o because_o the_o lord_n spare_v the_o ninevite_n we_o see_v then_o how_o blind_a he_o be_v and_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o a_o mad_a motion_n &_o violence_n to_o wish_v for_o death_n let_v we_o therefore_o learn_v so_o to_o love_v this_o life_n that_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o leave_v the_o fame_n as_o often_o as_o it_o shall_v seem_v good_a unto_o the_o lord_n let_v we_o learn_v also_o to_o wish_v for_o death_n but_o so_o that_o we_o may_v live_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o unto_o god_n now_o therefore_o with_o himself_o he_o desire_v to_o die_v and_o yet_o god_n forsake_v he_o not_o this_o be_v a_o rare_a example_n and_o show_n of_o the_o inestimable_a mercy_n of_o god_n which_o he_o vouchsafe_v unto_o his_o people_n although_o they_o yet_o do_v cast_v themselves_o down_o headlong_o even_o as_o jonas_n here_o rush_v into_o desperation_n and_o be_v not_o
