they_o work_v in_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n so_o that_o although_o the_o effect_n be_v not_o the_o immediate_a production_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n yet_o the_o activity_n and_o power_n that_o be_v put_v in_o the_o second_o cause_n to_o work_v be_v original_o due_a to_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o a_o more_o ignoble_a be_v do_v produce_v sometime_o a_o be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n than_o itself_o as_o the_o earth_n produce_v vegetable_n putrefaction_n sensible_fw-fr because_o the_o vigour_n and_o activity_n that_o cause_v it_o be_v at_o first_o put_v into_o the_o second_o cause_n by_o the_o first_o so_o that_o though_o they_o move_v uniform_o omnibus_fw-la rectè_fw-la dispositis_fw-la yet_o they_o act_v in_o virtute_fw-la primae_fw-la true_a likewise_o as_o in_o the_o being_n so_o in_o the_o continue_a subsistence_n of_o second_o cause_n which_o though_o they_o be_v and_o be_v support_v immediate_o by_o second_o cause_n quality_n and_o concurrence_n yet_o the_o activity_n and_o power_n that_o be_v in_o these_o second_o cause_n to_o produce_v or_o continue_v these_o effect_n be_v due_a to_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o continue_v in_o they_o by_o virtue_n of_o that_o will_n that_o at_o first_o plant_v it_o in_o they_o 2._o the_o dispose_v of_o all_o thing_n to_o their_o several_a end_n whether_o remote_a or_o near_a belong_v to_o this_o first_o cause_n every_o intellectual_a agent_n work_v for_o some_o end_n or_o other_o the_o first_o cause_n we_o have_v show_v to_o be_v a_o intellectual_a agent_n therefore_o what_o he_o work_v he_o work_v for_o some_o end_v answerable_a to_o the_o work_n and_o worker_n and_o it_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v that_o he_o that_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n or_o efficient_a of_o all_o thing_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o appointer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n in_o that_o work._n the_o end_n though_o it_o be_v last_o in_o execution_n be_v first_o in_o intention_n for_o it_o move_v the_o agent_n to_o the_o work_n or_o otherwise_o though_o he_o work_v not_o without_o a_o event_n he_o do_v it_o without_o a_o end._n now_o that_o which_o be_v first_o in_o efficiency_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o first_o designer_n of_o his_o own_o end_n which_o be_v but_o the_o result_n of_o his_o work_n a_o second_o cause_n though_o he_o may_v have_v a_o end_n in_o his_o causation_n proportionable_a to_o the_o causality_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endue_v yet_o as_o his_o efficiency_n be_v subordinate_a to_o and_o derive_v from_o the_o efficiency_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n so_o must_v his_o end_n be_v it_o may_v be_v a_o ultimate_a end_n in_o respect_n of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o interlocutory_a or_o rather_o no_o end_n at_o all_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n but_o only_o a_o mean_n conduce_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o end_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n when_o a_o passionate_a ambitious_a or_o covetous_a man_n drive_v main_o and_o whole_o at_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o lust_n as_o his_o end_n and_o that_o end_n draw_v out_o his_o activity_n and_o strength_n to_o
inconsistent_a with_o his_o simplicity_n so_o that_o his_o essence_n be_v his_o goodness_n and_o his_o goodness_n the_o same_o with_o his_o essence_n which_o be_v also_o to_o be_v observe_v in_o all_o his_o attribute_n though_o our_o understanding_n can_v apprehend_v this_o indivisible_a be_v all_o at_o once_o but_o step_v by_o step_n and_o from_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o whatsoever_o may_v be_v affirm_v concern_v his_o essence_n may_v be_v likewise_o affirm_v concern_v his_o goodness_n viz._n 1._o that_o it_o be_v infinite_a for_o so_o be_v his_o essence_n the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o a_o infinite_a be_v must_v needs_o be_v infinite_a and_o hence_o it_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o any_o increase_n or_o diminution_n and_o therefore_o the_o production_n of_o the_o effect_n and_o the_o communication_n of_o his_o goodness_n to_o they_o do_v neither_o add_v unto_o nor_o take_v from_o his_o goodness_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v perfect_a for_o that_o which_o be_v infinite_a must_v the_o same_o with_o himself_o and_o consequent_o he_o have_v a_o infinite_a rest_n and_o complacency_n in_o himself_o and_o that_o without_o the_o contribution_n of_o any_o thing_n without_o he_o for_o he_o have_v the_o same_o boundless_a happiness_n in_o himself_o before_o the_o existence_n of_o any_o effect_n as_o he_o have_v after_o because_o he_o have_v the_o same_o measure_n of_o goodness_n and_o the_o same_o perfect_a fruition_n of_o it_o before_o any_o such_o production_n as_o after_o the_o production_n of_o new_a effect_n be_v the_o emanation_n only_o of_o his_o essence_n and_o produce_v no_o alteration_n in_o he_o neither_o do_v it_o dilate_v his_o essential_a goodness_n or_o add_v a_o new_a degree_n of_o fruition_n of_o good_a to_o what_o he_o before_o have_v for_o he_o love_v the_o production_n of_o his_o will_n in_o himself_o and_o for_o himself_o 2._o that_o the_o first_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n so_o it_o be_v the_o supreme_a end_n of_o all_o thing_n because_o he_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a and_o the_o only_a adequate_a object_n of_o himself_o so_o that_o in_o the_o production_n of_o any_o effect_n the_o effect_n that_o be_v produce_v or_o any_o thing_n without_o the_o first_o be_v can_v not_o be_v the_o ultimate_a end_n for_o which_o it_o shall_v be_v produce_v for_o his_o will_n be_v and_o be_v fill_v with_o a_o infinite_a good_a viz._n himself_o so_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v take_v any_o thing_n into_o that_o will_n which_o be_v not_o in_o order_n to_o himself_o he_o make_v all_o thing_n for_o his_o own_o self_n and_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o follow_v that_o nothing_o without_o he_o be_v a_o end_n to_o itself_o because_o he_o that_o be_v the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n must_v needs_o be_v he_o that_o must_v be_v the_o master_n and_o appointer_n of_o the_o end_n of_o all_o thing_n so_o cause_v 3._o from_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o all_o the_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o the_o creature_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o print_n or_o impression_n of_o that_o goodness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o first_o be_v though_o according_a to_o the_o different_a degree_n of_o thing_n the_o impression_n be_v more_o or_o less_o genuine_a for_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v denominate_v good_a but_o by_o a_o conformity_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o first_o goodness_n that_o conformity_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o impression_n of_o divine_a goodness_n upon_o the_o creature_n this_o impression_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n upon_o the_o creature_n be_v not_o by_o any_o transmission_n of_o any_o part_n of_o the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o the_o first_o be_v into_o the_o effect_n for_o that_o be_v incommunicable_a nor_o by_o any_o physical_a action_n of_o that_o goodness_n upon_o another_o thing_n but_o the_o mere_a will_n of_o the_o first_o mover_n now_o we_o find_v a_o fourfold_a goodness_n in_o the_o creature_n 1._o a_o essential_a goodness_n which_o be_v communicate_v with_o the_o very_o be_v of_o it_o thus_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v be_v good_a in_o itself_o though_o relative_o it_o may_v be_v evil_a because_o in_o that_o it_o be_v it_o be_v conformable_a to_o the_o first_o cause_n who_o will_v it_o to_o be_v this_o goodness_n in_o any_o intrinsical_a but_o not_o a_o essential_a goodness_n when_o a_o thing_n have_v all_o those_o quality_n or_o requisite_n in_o itself_o which_o be_v suitable_a and_o conducible_a to_o those_o act_n and_o operation_n that_o belong_v to_o the_o degree_n of_o its_o be_v and_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o degree_n in_o these_o quality_n denominate_v it_o more_o or_o less_o good_a thus_o be_v all_o creature_n in_o their_o original_a perfect_o good_a though_o every_o kind_n have_v a_o several_a degree_n of_o perfection_n yet_o every_o thing_n have_v a_o perfection_n in_o its_o kind_n this_o goodness_n be_v likewise_o communicate_v from_o the_o first_o be_v and_o the_o suitableness_n of_o those_o quality_n in_o the_o creature_n to_o the_o exigency_n of_o their_o own_o condition_n do_v conducible_a or_o useful_a for_o the_o preservation_n or_o perfection_n of_o another_o thing_n and_o be_v therefore_o desirable_a or_o good_a for_o it_o for_o though_o the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o any_o thing_n be_v as_o indivisible_a be_v the_o essence_n itself_o and_o therefore_o in_o that_o abstract_n notion_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o degree_n yet_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o perfection_n which_o a_o finite_a be_v be_v capable_a of_o and_o different_a degree_n of_o perfection_n in_o several_a being_n in_o their_o concrete_a notion_n as_o a_o man_n be_v a_o more_o perfect_a good_a whereof_o that_o be_v be_v receptible_a and_o consequent_o a_o receptibility_n of_o that_o which_o may_v supply_v it_o 2._o a_o motion_n or_o desire_n of_o that_o be_v that_o have_v this_o vacuity_n and_o receptibility_n unto_o that_o which_o may_v supply_v it_o and_o a_o desire_n of_o union_n to_o it_o this_o it_o have_v from_o the_o cause_n of_o its_o be_v for_o the_o cause_n of_o its_o be_v must_v needs_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o appetite_n or_o motion_n to_o its_o far_a perfection_n and_o this_o be_v sometime_o so_o strong_a and_o active_a that_o it_o carry_v the_o creature_n by_o way_n of_o consequence_n to_o the_o destruction_n of_o that_o be_v which_o at_o present_a it_o have_v to_o attain_v a_o high_a being_n 3._o a_o proportion_n between_o the_o vacuity_n or_o necessity_n of_o the_o subject_n desire_v to_o the_o thing_n desire_v as_o a_o man_n to_o supply_v his_o hunger_n desire_v not_o clothes_n but_o meat_n and_o when_o cold_a desire_v not_o meat_n but_o clothes_n because_o these_o hold_v proportion_n to_o that_o exigence_n that_o the_o creature_n desire_v to_o fill_v and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o temporal_a good_a satisfy_v not_o a_o spiritual_a substance_n nor_o a_o spiritual_a good_a satisfy_v a_o carnal_a substance_n because_o they_o be_v not_o proportionable_a 4._o a_o activity_n in_o the_o good_a desire_a to_o apply_v itself_o to_o the_o supply_n of_o that_o
compass_v they_o yet_o a_o wise_a statesman_n according_a to_o the_o convenience_n or_o exigence_n of_o the_o public_a can_v manage_v and_o order_v this_o ambition_n and_o the_o satisfaction_n thereof_o unto_o a_o high_a end_n which_o the_o other_o never_o so_o much_o as_o dream_v of_o as_o we_o therefore_o divide_v all_o being_n and_o cause_n into_o first_o and_o second_o so_o we_o distinguish_v all_o end_n into_o the_o end_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o of_o second_o cause_n touch_v the_o end_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n we_o say_v it_o be_v twofold_a 1._o that_o which_o be_v the_o end_n in_o respect_n of_o himself_o this_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o own_o will._n as_o we_o must_v resolve_v the_o be_v of_o all_o thing_n into_o the_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n in_o point_n of_o efficiency_n so_o in_o this_o respect_n we_o must_v resolve_v all_o thing_n into_o that_o same_o will_n in_o point_n of_o finality_n and_o this_o be_v the_o most_o adequate_a and_o ultimate_a resolution_n of_o all_o thing_n they_o be_v because_o he_o will_v they_o to_o be_v for_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v absolute_o and_o infinite_o perfect_a and_o good_a can_v original_o be_v move_v by_o any_o thing_n without_o he_o that_o will_v import_v a_o passibility_n viz._n to_o be_v move_v and_o impulse_v to_o any_o thing_n by_o any_o thing_n without_o he_o and_o a_o imperfection_n which_o may_v be_v supply_v by_o the_o acquisition_n of_o that_o end_n for_o which_o he_o work_v both_o these_o be_v necessary_o to_o be_v admit_v in_o any_o case_n where_o any_o end_n extrinsical_a to_o the_o efficient_a itself_o be_v admit_v for_o 1._o the_o end_n have_v a_o impulsion_n or_o action_n upon_o the_o efficient_a and_o 2._o it_o necessary_o suppose_v a_o vacuity_n or_o emptiness_n quoad_fw-la hoc_fw-la which_o shall_v be_v supply_v with_o that_o end_v acquire_v be_v it_o a_o end_n of_o supplement_n or_o delight_n neither_o of_o these_o cause_n ordain_v to_o be_v conducible_a to_o this_o end_n that_o therefore_o all_o other_o end_v and_o perfection_n that_o be_v below_o the_o uttermost_a height_n and_o perfection_n of_o man_n may_v consist_v with_o this_o end_n for_o we_o be_v not_o to_o conceive_v so_o improvident_o of_o the_o first_o cause_n that_o he_o shall_v put_v a_o thing_n in_o such_o a_o degree_n of_o be_v that_o the_o body_n subordinate_a and_o when_o it_o want_v its_o due_a subordination_n prove_v irrational_a but_o the_o other_o be_v perpetual_a because_o fix_v upon_o a_o perpetual_a end_n principal_o concern_v the_o soul_n supreme_a and_o simple_a without_o mixture_n of_o any_o thing_n in_o it_o below_o reason_n 3._o conscience_n which_o be_v a_o high_a act_n of_o the_o understanding_n for_o as_o wisdom_n look_v and_o move_v forward_o by_o the_o right_a rule_n or_o principle_n to_o the_o right_a end_n so_o conscience_n look_v backward_o and_o measure_v the_o act_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o these_o rule_n or_o principle_n and_o consist_v of_o three_o proposition_n 1._o it_o do_v of_o necessity_n presuppose_v a_o rule_n or_o principle_n give_v unto_o man_n direct_v he_o in_o his_o motion_n to_o his_o supreme_a end._n we_o see_v all_o thing_n natural_a have_v some_o principle_n instinct_n or_o law_n whereby_o they_o be_v carry_v to_o their_o several_a end_n and_o operation_n that_o which_o be_v in_o they_o a_o instinct_n be_v to_o man_n a_o law_n because_o be_v endue_v with_o understanding_n and_o will_n he_o be_v susceptible_a of_o a_o law_n which_o inferior_a creature_n be_v not_o now_o as_o the_o interruption_n of_o that_o law_n or_o rule_n in_o natural_a thing_n bring_v a_o obliquity_n and_o irregularity_n in_o their_o motion_n and_o so_o divert_v they_o from_o that_o end_n to_o which_o otherwise_o they_o will_v arrive_v so_o the_o violation_n of_o this_o law_n or_o rule_n give_v to_o man_n do_v at_o once_o subject_v he_o to_o a_o threefold_a mischief_n 1._o consist_v in_o nothing_o else_o but_o a_o conformity_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o their_o being_n motion_n and_o end_n if_o any_o of_o that_o conformity_n be_v alter_v there_o arise_v present_o a_o deformity_n uselessness_n and_o uncomeliness_n in_o the_o creature_n the_o same_o it_o be_v with_o man_n he_o receive_v questionless_a a_o rule_n to_o live_v and_o move_v to_o a_o most_o suitable_a end_n and_o conformable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n that_o order_v he_o to_o that_o end_n as_o long_o as_o he_o move_v conformable_a to_o that_o rule_n he_o move_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o maker_n to_o a_o most_o suitable_a end_n but_o when_o once_o he_o violate_v that_o rule_n he_o contract_v a_o deformity_n ataxy_n and_o uncomeliness_n by_o such_o violation_n 3._o a_o obligation_n to_o some_o positive_a punishment_n annex_v to_o the_o violation_n of_o that_o law_n for_o let_v we_o suppose_v any_o creature_n want_v will_n and_o understanding_n that_o do_v notwithstanding_o not_o move_v according_a to_o this_o rule_n by_o this_o he_o will_v most_o clear_o contract_v the_o two_o former_a viz._n loss_n and_o deformity_n but_o where_o a_o law_n be_v give_v to_o a_o creature_n endue_v with_o these_o faculty_n the_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n so_o give_v include_v in_o it_o not_o only_o a_o privative_a offence_n as_o i_o may_v call_v it_o to_o which_o a_o privative_a punishment_n may_v be_v answerable_a but_o a_o positive_a rebellion_n rejection_n and_o disobedience_n to_o that_o duty_n and_o subjection_n he_o owe_v observe_v likewise_o in_o man_n disposition_n and_o inclination_n of_o several_a kind_n common_a to_o whole_a nation_n climate_n family_n which_o though_o they_o incline_v the_o man_n to_o action_n and_o carriage_n suitable_a to_o those_o several_a disposition_n yet_o be_v not_o law_n or_o principle_n of_o nature_n these_o principle_n therefore_o of_o the_o divine_a law_n call_v natural_a principle_n of_o conscience_n be_v in_o the_o understanding_n these_o way_n 1._o supernatural_o thus_o almighty_a god_n do_v at_o first_o give_v man_n a_o copy_n of_o his_o will_n show_v to_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n command_v he_o to_o obey_v it_o and_o this_o perfect_a discovery_n he_o make_v at_o first_o and_o when_o it_o decay_v after_o the_o fall_n of_o man_n it_o be_v evident_a he_o do_v by_o divine_a inspiration_n and_o revelation_n reenforced_v and_o discover_v it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o holy_a history_n 2._o artificial_o by_o tradition_n from_o the_o first_o man_n to_o divers_a of_o those_o principle_n which_o god_n at_o first_o show_v he_o 3._o naturally_n viz._n by_o the_o help_n of_o reason_n and_o discourse_n for_o although_o if_o a_o man_n be_v breed_v up_o from_o his_o infancy_n without_o any_o manner_n of_o instruction_n it_o will_v be_v very_o difficult_a for_o he_o to_o take_v up_o of_o himself_o any_o sound_a principle_n of_o nature_n yet_o i_o do_v believe_v that_o the_o divine_a law_n give_v to_o man_n have_v that_o justice_n and_o agreeableness_n to_o right_a reason_n that_o when_o once_o the_o motion_n of_o reason_n have_v any_o material_n be_v ordain_v and_o will_v move_v if_o it_o know_v it_o and_o how_o to_o attain_v it_o again_o though_o the_o understanding_n do_v sometime_o find_v that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n will_v make_v i_o happy_a but_o i_o spy_v the_o true_a and_o everlasting_a happiness_n yet_o the_o conviction_n be_v not_o so_o strong_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o dare_v conclude_v the_o pursuit_n thereof_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o those_o delight_n which_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o competition_n of_o these_o present_a enjoyment_n will_v soon_o starve_v and_o famish_v these_o uncompleat_a conviction_n and_o all_o pursuit_n in_o the_o will_n of_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n happen_v in_o the_o understanding_n 2._o in_o the_o will_n which_o have_v lose_v her_o liberty_n to_o follow_v her_o light_n and_o be_v captivate_v by_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n the_o understanding_n be_v right_o enlighten_v present_v to_o the_o will_v several_a end_n the_o subordinate_a end_n preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la by_o meat_n and_o drink_n acquisition_n of_o wealth_n to_o provide_v these_o convenience_n obtain_v of_o power_n to_o secure_v that_o wealth_n the_o supreme_a end_n blessedness_n and_o that_o wherein_o it_o consist_v show_v the_o will_n that_o the_o value_n of_o these_o end_n must_v be_v the_o measure_n of_o her_o pursuit_n of_o they_o viz._n with_o subordination_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n in_o order_n to_o it_o and_o bid_v she_o beware_v of_o turn_v the_o subordinate_a end_n to_o ultimate_a end_n but_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n either_o before_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o understanding_n have_v precipitate_v the_o will_n into_o a_o violent_a pursuit_n of_o those_o present_a and_o sensible_a good_n or_o so_o bewitch_v she_o after_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n thereof_o that_o it_o can_v no_o more_o listen_v to_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o pursuit_n of_o a_o future_a spiritual_a good_a than_o if_o it_o have_v no_o reason_n the_o beast_n in_o man_n have_v get_v the_o man_n upon_o his_o back_n and_o run_v away_o with_o he_o contrary_a to_o the_o cry_n and_o dictate_v even_o of_o reason_n that_o shall_v rule_v it_o and_o of_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n all_o mankind_n be_v sick_a both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o cure_v we_o must_v be_v before_o we_o can_v clear_o and_o uniform_o move_v to_o our_o supreme_a end_n which_o what_o it_o be_v as_o the_o next_o inquiry_n chap._n iu._n of_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o man._n what_o be_v that_o good_a for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a inquiry_n of_o the_o wise_a of_o man_n so_o it_o be_v that_o problem_n that_o have_v torture_v the_o wit_n and_o weary_v the_o pursuit_n of_o most_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world._n the_o universality_n of_o the_o question_n grow_v from_o that_o restless_a motion_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n after_o some_o end_n which_o put_v every_o man_n at_o last_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o somewhat_o as_o his_o end_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o upon_o the_o speculative_a and_o critical_a inquiry_n concern_v it_o as_o the_o ordinary_a rational_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n teach_v a_o man_n to_o conclude_v rational_o though_o he_o have_v not_o that_o artificial_a reason_n of_o reason_n which_o be_v acquire_v by_o speculation_n and_o study_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o put_v many_o upon_o the_o inquiry_n and_o all_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o some_o end_n so_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o decision_n do_v produce_v that_o variety_n of_o judgement_n and_o practice_n concern_v this_o which_o be_v impossible_a all_o to_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a but_o possible_o they_o may_v be_v all_o false_a in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o supreme_a good_a and_o adequate_a end_n of_o man_n which_o be_v his_o happiness_n and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o among_o the_o several_a determination_n of_o man_n concern_v this_o matter_n each_o do_v abundant_o convince_v the_o other_o to_o be_v error_n and_o mistake_n and_o though_o none_o do_v sufficient_o satisfy_v and_o convince_v a_o man_n that_o it_o be_v the_o right_n yet_o do_v abundant_o satisfy_v that_o the_o adverse_a opinion_n be_v mistake_v concern_v this_o point_n because_o the_o truth_n be_v but_o one_o the_o rest_n be_v all_o error_n and_o though_o some_o carry_v more_o likelihood_n of_o reason_n than_o other_o yet_o it_o carry_v so_o much_o distance_n from_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v discernible_a not_o to_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o the_o mistake_n be_v not_o only_o evident_a to_o reason_n but_o even_o to_o sense_n itself_o that_o man_n that_o will_v go_v about_o to_o persuade_v i_o that_o happiness_n consist_v in_o corporal_a pleasure_n outward_a good_a of_o body_n or_o fortune_n wealth_n or_o honour_n knowledge_n of_o all_o create_a being_n practice_n of_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n i_o need_v no_o other_o conviction_n of_o the_o falsity_n of_o these_o but_o this_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o any_o or_o all_o of_o these_o i_o still_o find_v those_o affection_n in_o my_o soul_n that_o can_v consist_v with_o happiness_n but_o mingle_v misery_n with_o this_o thin_a and_o empty_a happiness_n 1._o desire_v of_o somewhat_o more_o or_o somewhat_o else_o which_o i_o have_v not_o which_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o goodness_n of_o what_o i_o enjoy_v but_o from_o the_o emptiness_n and_o narrowness_n of_o it_o 2._o consequent_o grief_n for_o what_o i_o want_v and_o have_v not_o 3._o fear_v of_o loss_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o never_o any_o man_n in_o this_o world_n in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n he_o ever_o have_v or_o be_v capable_a of_o except_o that_o which_o we_o now_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o have_v these_o three_o affection_n about_o he_o actual_o work_v which_o can_v never_o consist_v with_o happiness_n now_o the_o general_a ground_n of_o these_o mistake_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n be_v 1._o the_o error_n of_o their_o judgement_n 2._o the_o impetus_fw-la or_o force_v of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n which_o precipitate_v and_o captivate_v their_o judgement_n the_o speculative_a error_n arise_v from_o ignorance_n 1._o of_o the_o subject_a man_n for_o let_v it_o be_v but_o once_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v a_o intellectual_a immortal_a substance_n all_o those_o opinion_n which_o place_n happiness_n in_o this_o life_n will_v be_v convince_v clear_o false_a and_o vain_a but_o though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o tell_v i_o what_o be_v not_o my_o
happiness_n viz._n that_o no_o temporal_a thing_n no_o carnal_a pleasure_n no_o contemplation_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v commensurate_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o best_a part_n of_o man_n and_o consequent_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v his_o end._n yet_o this_o though_o it_o take_v he_o off_o from_o the_o wrong_a way_n it_o set_v he_o not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o leave_v he_o at_o a_o stand_n therefore_o 2._o the_o second_o impediment_n be_v the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o object_n of_o this_o happiness_n the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o only_a object_n of_o all_o our_o happiness_n the_o proof_n and_o demonstration_n whereof_o ensue_v by_o what_o have_v be_v before_o say_v it_o be_v evident_a 1._o that_o by_o the_o wise_a appointment_n of_o god_n every_o thing_n be_v ordain_v to_o a_o end_n to_o which_o it_o move_v 2._o that_o this_o end_n be_v such_o a_o good_a as_o be_v answerable_a to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o creature_n which_o move_v to_o it_o a_o mere_a natural_a agent_n move_v to_o a_o natural_a end_n a_o sensitive_a to_o a_o sensible_a good._n 3._o that_o the_o high_a that_o good_a consist_v that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o man_n we_o must_v take_v measure_n of_o the_o soul_n wherein_o consist_v man_n perfection_n and_o when_o or_o where_o we_o can_v find_v a_o good_a conformity_n one_o to_o another_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o in_o that_o small_a slender_a use_n that_o the_o soul_n make_v of_o the_o creature_n as_o it_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o soul_n till_o it_o be_v spiritualise_v in_o the_o species_n which_o be_v refine_v more_o and_o more_o the_o near_o they_o come_v to_o the_o soul_n first_o in_o the_o organ_n then_o in_o the_o fantasy_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o soul_n make_v use_v of_o they_o to_o any_o purpose_n be_v receive_v till_o by_o abstraction_n it_o have_v make_v they_o of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o herself_o and_o from_o this_o disproportion_n between_o the_o soul_n and_o those_o external_a enjoyment_n do_v arise_v that_o unsatisfactoriness_n that_o come_v by_o they_o to_o the_o soul_n for_o though_o they_o be_v useful_a to_o the_o body_n and_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v desirable_a by_o the_o soul_n itself_o in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n yet_o they_o reach_v not_o so_o far_o as_o the_o soul_n their_o end_n fall_v short_a of_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n rest_v not_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o they_o nay_o though_o it_o see_v not_o its_o proper_a end_n yet_o it_o find_v a_o nauseum_fw-la in_o the_o excess_n of_o these_o and_o therefore_o be_v restless_a and_o move_v from_o one_o pleasure_n to_o another_o and_o this_o be_v likewise_o the_o reason_n why_o every_o outward_a pleasure_n be_v great_a in_o the_o expectation_n than_o in_o the_o fruition_n because_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o creature_n that_o the_o soul_n form_n can_v bring_v it_o near_o to_o the_o soul_n than_o the_o creature_n when_o it_o be_v enjoy_v can_v come_v and_o this_o imagination_n as_o it_o do_v delude_v the_o soul_n so_o it_o likewise_o take_v off_o much_o of_o that_o content_a which_o may_v be_v lawful_o find_v and_o use_v in_o the_o creature_n it_o make_v the_o pursuit_n too_o eager_a and_o fruition_n flat_a in_o that_o it_o be_v over_o expect_v 2._o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v consequent_o immortal_a and_o its_o felicity_n can_v therefore_o consist_v in_o that_o which_o can_v be_v co-extended_n with_o it_o be_v there_o a_o good_a imaginable_a that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n hold_v proportion_n with_o the_o value_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o be_v perishable_a it_o be_v impossible_a that_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o good_a can_v the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o that_o upon_o these_o reason_n 1._o because_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o divisible_a and_o successive_a take_v it_o apart_o from_o the_o body_n a_o temporary_a felicity_n will_v be_v no_o felicity_n it_o be_v true_a we_o measure_v out_o our_o time_n by_o parcel_n as_o year_n and_o week_n and_o day_n and_o hour_n and_o minute_n but_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o for_o though_o the_o duration_n thereof_o be_v not_o simple_o indivisible_a as_o in_o the_o duration_n of_o eternity_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o more_o swift_a than_o we_o and_o so_o will_v be_v almost_o insensible_a of_o a_o temporary_a good_a though_o of_o long_a continuance_n 2._o because_o the_o determination_n of_o that_o good_a will_v consequent_o determine_v its_o felicity_n so_o it_o can_v be_v no_o perfect_a happiness_n 3._o the_o very_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o most_o perfect_a good_a that_o the_o soul_n look_v upon_o as_o determinable_a be_v in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n mingle_v with_o a_o discontent_n grief_n and_o fear_v which_o be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o rob_v the_o soul_n of_o felicity_n in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v take_v up_o with_o such_o sad_a preapprehension_n and_o preexpectation_n as_o these_o i_o now_o enjoy_v a_o good_a answerable_a to_o my_o desire_n and_o that_o fill_v up_o every_o the_o least_o vacuity_n and_o crave_v of_o my_o will_n yet_o i_o foresee_v that_o it_o be_v not_o last_v a_o time_n must_v come_v when_o i_o must_v lose_v it_o and_o it_o will_v die_v under_o my_o hand_n and_o yet_o my_o immortal_a be_v shall_v have_v continuance_n to_o all_o eternity_n when_o my_o present_a enjoyment_n shall_v serve_v but_o to_o increase_v my_o emptiness_n and_o misery_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o lose_v this_o handwriting_n upon_o the_o wall_n be_v enough_o to_o turn_v the_o high_a enjoyment_n that_o be_v but_o temporary_a into_o bitterness_n in_o the_o very_a enjoyment_n much_o more_o those_o vain_a and_o thin_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n that_o never_o come_v near_o the_o soul_n but_o in_o a_o deceitful_a imagination_n so_o then_o to_o the_o constitution_n of_o true_a happiness_n for_o a_o immortal_a substance_n there_o be_v re-required_n a_o immortal_a good._n 3._o it_o must_v be_v a_o good_a divide_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n from_o the_o soul._n there_o can_v nothing_o be_v the_o end_n and_o supreme_a good_a to_o itself_o but_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o alone_o be_v self-sufficient_a and_o that_o be_v manifest_a in_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o if_o itself_o be_v the_o end_n of_o itself_o it_o have_v its_o end_n and_o consequent_o will_v cease_v to_o move_v but_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o a_o pure_a act_n but_o receptive_a of_o something_o distinct_a from_o itself_o to_o which_o it_o move_v as_o to_o its_o end_n and_o perfection_n 4._o it_o must_v be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a good_a for_o since_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v in_o these_o two_o active_a faculty_n the_o understanding_n who_o object_n be_v truth_n and_o the_o will_n and_o the_o principal_a use_n of_o every_o faculty_n be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v his_o summum_fw-la bonum_fw-la it_o be_v necessary_a that_o that_o which_o be_v pursue_v by_o the_o will_n as_o good_a shall_v likewise_o be_v entertain_v by_o the_o understanding_n as_o true_a and_o the_o high_a perfection_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v about_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a because_o that_o truth_n be_v the_o supreme_a truth_n the_o truth_n of_o this_o goodness_n stand_v in_o opposition_n 1_o to_o that_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v good_a and_o be_v not_o at_o all_o such_o be_v mere_o imaginary_a and_o fantastical_a good_n when_o the_o soul_n work_v a_o imaginary_a good_a and_o then_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o belief_n of_o it_o 2._o to_o that_o which_o have_v a_o be_v seem_v to_o be_v good_a and_o be_v not_o 3._o to_o that_o which_o though_o it_o be_v good_a seem_v to_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a but_o be_v not_o it_o must_v therefore_o be_v a_o intellectual_a real_a good._n 5._o it_o must_v
be_v a_o infinite_a and_o universal_a good._n the_o former_a qualification_n though_o each_o exclude_v something_o yet_o none_o exclude_v all_o creature_n from_o be_v the_o supreme_a end_n of_o the_o motion_n and_o comprehension_n of_o the_o understanding_n though_o actual_o it_o do_v not_o understand_v all_o thing_n finite_a it_o may_v comprehend_v all_o finite_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n which_o be_v clear_o evidence_v by_o experience_n the_o most_o know_a man_n in_o the_o world_n have_v as_o much_o room_n for_o more_o knowledge_n as_o he_o have_v before_o he_o know_v any_o thing_n if_o a_o man_n therefore_o know_v all_o the_o finite_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o be_v not_o the_o understanding_n so_o fill_v but_o be_v there_o more_o to_o be_v know_v he_o will_v have_v room_n for_o it_o and_o consequent_o a_o desire_n to_o it_o nothing_o then_o can_v fill_v and_o satiate_v the_o understanding_n but_o infiniteness_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o conclude_v that_o the_o understanding_n be_v commensurate_a to_o the_o infinite_a nature_n of_o the_o first_o be_v no_o that_o have_v a_o actual_a plenitude_n beyond_o the_o comprehension_n of_o the_o understanding_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n a_o understanding_n potential_o infinite_a that_o can_v be_v fill_v with_o what_o be_v actual_o finite_a as_o all_o creature_n be_v and_o as_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v infinite_a and_o restless_a till_o it_o be_v fill_v with_o he_o that_o fill_v all_o in_o all_o so_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n nothing_o below_o a_o infinite_a good_a can_v satisfy_v it_o and_o now_o as_o we_o have_v argue_v upward_o from_o the_o capacity_n and_o vastness_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o faculty_n that_o nothing_o below_o a_o infinite_a good_a can_v be_v its_o end_n so_o we_o must_v argue_v downward_o too_o the_o great_a and_o wise_a creator_n who_o have_v the_o disposition_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o their_o end_n and_o who_o in_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n have_v put_v motion_n and_o capacity_n in_o all_o thing_n conduce_v and_o fit_a for_o those_o end_n for_o which_o he_o have_v ordain_v they_o have_v appoint_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o end_n of_o his_o immortal_a creature_n and_o therefore_o have_v put_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o capacity_n too_o large_a for_o any_o thing_n below_o himself_o and_o motion_n restless_a in_o any_o thing_n but_o himself_o the_o conclusion_n therefore_o be_v the_o immortal_a invisible_a creator_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v or_o receptibility_n in_o some_o measure_n of_o himself_o and_o as_o every_o power_n be_v ordain_v in_o reference_n to_o something_o else_o that_o may_v actuate_v and_o perfect_v it_o and_o consequent_o move_v after_o that_o object_n whereunto_o it_o be_v ordain_v so_o this_o receptibility_n which_o god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o soul_n do_v or_o at_o least_o natural_o shall_v move_v to_o that_o object_n which_o alone_o can_v fill_v its_o vacuity_n and_o receptiveness_n 2._o in_o as_o much_o as_o god_n be_v a_o free_a agent_n though_o he_o give_v the_o soul_n these_o faculty_n yet_o so_o much_o be_v his_o be_v and_o perfection_n beyond_o the_o reach_n and_o attainment_n of_o any_o finite_a be_v that_o this_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n can_v never_o overtake_v his_o happiness_n unless_o there_o be_v likewise_o a_o act_n of_o condescension_n and_o communion_n of_o himself_o to_o the_o soul_n therefore_o there_o be_v necessary_o require_v to_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n a_o communication_n by_o god_n unto_o the_o soul_n and_o by_o this_o reciprocal_a act_n 1._o of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n as_o the_o only_a perfection_n of_o it_o 2._o of_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n fill_v the_o desire_n thereof_o with_o himself_o this_o union_n and_o happiness_n be_v wrought_v this_o communication_n by_o god_n be_v not_o of_o his_o essence_n or_o be_v for_o that_o be_v incommunicable_a and_o can_v be_v mingle_v with_o any_o creature_n but_o as_o objective_n and_o for_o a_o full_a explication_n of_o this_o god_n be_v please_v to_o communicate_v himself_o to_o the_o soul_n according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o these_o great_a faculty_n which_o he_o have_v plant_v in_o it_o viz._n the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will._n and_o as_o without_o relation_n to_o both_o these_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o man_n shall_v be_v true_o happy_a so_o if_o both_o these_o be_v full_o satisfy_v there_o can_v want_v any_o thing_n to_o complete_a his_o happiness_n because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o faculty_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o can_v receive_v any_o further_a portion_n of_o happiness_n 1._o the_o communication_n of_o god_n to_o the_o understanding_n be_v that_o whereby_o he_o fill_v the_o same_o with_o the_o knowledge_n and_o sight_n of_o himself_o here_o the_o understanding_n have_v a_o object_n that_o satisfy_v and_o fill_v all_o the_o restless_a motion_n of_o it_o wherein_o he_o read_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o all_o his_o doubt_n and_o inquity_n wherein_o though_o upon_o the_o first_o view_n it_o find_v more_o than_o enough_o to_o fill_v its_o vast_a comprehension_n yet_o every_o atom_n of_o its_o duration_n make_v new_a discovery_n of_o what_o iâ—_n think_v it_o want_v not_o the_o object_n be_v infinite_o too_o large_a for_o all_o understanding_n wherein_o the_o understanding_n though_o it_o enjoy_v his_o object_n be_v not_o satiate_v but_o it_o rest_v in_o it_o be_v not_o tire_v with_o it_o every_o power_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o its_o full_a and_o adequate_a object_n have_v complacency_n and_o acquiescence_n
as_o far_o exceed_v all_o other_o happiness_n in_o the_o world_n as_o far_o as_o it_o fall_v short_a of_o that_o perfect_a knowledge_n love_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v be_v enjoy_v hereafter_o be_v a_o man_n from_o the_o high_a honour_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n cast_v into_o the_o great_a scorn_n and_o ignominy_n that_o the_o most_o exact_a and_o exasperate_v envy_n can_v impose_v or_o wish_v or_o be_v his_o body_n lade_v with_o as_o many_o necessity_n misery_n and_o torment_n as_o hunger_n and_o the_o most_o sublimate_v and_o ingenious_a malice_n can_v inflict_v or_o contrive_v can_v as_o well_o the_o high_a sense_n as_o the_o most_o imminent_a expectation_n of_o death_n the_o great_a of_o evil_n be_v feel_v and_o yet_o protract_v for_o a_o age_n yet_o if_o under_o all_o this_o the_o soul_n can_v look_v upon_o these_o misery_n as_o such_o as_o must_v end_v and_o see_v though_o at_o a_o distance_n a_o fruition_n of_o a_o everlasting_a beatitude_n infallible_o expect_v upon_o the_o close_a of_o these_o misery_n the_o expect_a happiness_n be_v make_v present_a by_o faith_n and_o over-ballanceth_a the_o present_n but_o end_v misery_n how_o much_o more_o when_o in_o the_o instant_n of_o these_o suffering_n the_o intention_n and_o bent_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o her_o maker_n and_o the_o great_a god_n shall_v by_o the_o secret_a yet_o real_a beam_n of_o his_o favour_n send_v into_o the_o soul_n message_n of_o acceptation_n and_o love_n how_o small_a and_o low_o do_v this_o render_v the_o high_a contempt_n and_o malice_n of_o man_n and_o devil_n and_o how_o much_o rather_o will_v this_o man_n choose_v to_o enjoy_v these_o effect_n of_o the_o love_n of_o his_o maker_n with_o these_o misery_n than_o bare_o to_o see_v the_o experiment_n of_o his_o power_n and_o justice_n in_o remove_v or_o revenge_v they_o 2_o how_o far_o forth_o this_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n do_v conduce_v to_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la the_o whole_a man_n or_o whether_o it_o do_v so_o or_o no_o wherein_o we_o say_v 1._o that_o the_o happiness_n that_o be_v answerable_a to_o the_o compositum_fw-la without_o consider_v the_o great_a relation_n of_o the_o soul_n do_v consist_v in_o the_o perfect_a and_o continue_v of_o his_o subsistence_n and_o kind_n and_o whatsoever_o the_o compositum_fw-la desire_n and_o move_v after_o it_o be_v in_o order_n to_o these_o and_o not_o otherwise_o as_o in_o that_o one_o instance_n of_o meat_n the_o wise_a god_n have_v give_v he_o the_o sense_n of_o taste_v whereby_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o those_o thing_n that_o please_v the_o appetite_n but_o this_o be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o take_n in_o of_o those_o nourishment_n that_o may_v preserve_v the_o compositum_fw-la the_o like_a of_o the_o other_o sense_n now_o as_o long_o as_o the_o man_n in_o these_o thing_n move_v to_o these_o end_n he_o move_v natural_o and_o orderly_o but_o when_o in_o stead_n of_o move_v to_o this_o end_n he_o rest_v in_o the_o mean_n than_o he_o move_v inordinate_o and_o out_o of_o the_o way_n to_o that_o temporal_a happiness_n the_o support_n of_o the_o body_n as_o when_o he_o eat_v and_o drink_v to_o excess_n the_o like_a for_o all_o other_o outward_a matter_n as_o honour_n riches_n woman_n etc._n etc._n when_o they_o be_v not_o enjoy_v to_o those_o end_n for_o which_o they_o be_v ordain_v then_o be_v the_o man_n out_o of_o that_o way_n to_o the_o temporal_a happiness_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la viz._n the_o due_a support_n and_o subsistence_n of_o it_o 2._o that_o the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n may_v consist_v with_o this_o felicity_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la the_o reason_n à _fw-fr priori_fw-la have_v be_v already_o give_v because_o the_o wise_a god_n in_o the_o first_o institution_n of_o thing_n do_v order_v every_o thing_n to_o their_o several_a end_n with_o that_o wisdom_n that_o there_o be_v no_o clash_n of_o the_o several_a end_n of_o the_o same_o thing_n or_o of_o several_a thing_n but_o one_o do_v and_o may_v consist_v with_o the_o other_o the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n may_v and_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la may_v consist_v with_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o body_n and_o compositum_fw-la therefore_o it_o follow_v 3._o that_o inconsistency_n of_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o that_o of_o the_o body_n be_v not_o real_a but_o because_o however_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v we_o have_v misplace_v and_o mistake_v the_o happiness_n of_o the_o body_n we_o now_o place_v the_o happiness_n of_o the_o body_n in_o turn_v ourselves_o over_o to_o sensuality_n in_o excessive_a use_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o excessive_a lust_n these_o be_v clear_a mistake_n for_o it_o be_v most_o apparent_a that_o these_o be_v enemy_n to_o the_o very_a subsistence_n of_o the_o body_n and_o composium_n 3._o that_o this_o felicity_n of_o the_o body_n be_v inferior_a to_o the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o if_o ex_fw-la accident_n it_o fall_v out_o though_o it_o seldom_o do_v in_o truth_n that_o the_o temporal_a felicity_n of_o the_o body_n be_v in_o hoc_fw-la individuo_fw-la inconsistent_a with_o that_o of_o the_o soul_n right_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o great_a end_n and_o that_o of_o more_o concernment_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v so_o that_o as_o there_o be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v a_o subordination_n of_o those_o faculty_n and_o power_n place_v in_o the_o body_n to_o those_o end_n for_o which_o they_o be_v implant_v viz._n the_o preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la so_o there_o aught_o to_o be_v a_o subordination_n both_o of_o these_o mean_n and_o that_o end_v to_o the_o great_a end_n the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul._n 4._o as_o the_o great_a end_n of_o man_n do_v consist_v with_o the_o happiness_n of_o his_o body_n or_o compositum_fw-la so_o it_o do_v much_o and_o effectual_o conduce_v to_o it_o and_o as_o this_o be_v apparent_a in_o the_o original_a creation_n of_o man_n when_o the_o happiness_n of_o his_o mind_n by_o the_o knowledge_n and_o presence_n of_o his_o maker_n be_v accompany_v with_o the_o felicity_n of_o his_o compositum_fw-la and_o as_o it_o be_v likewise_o apparent_a in_o his_o fall_n as_o he_o contract_a misery_n in_o the_o one_o so_o he_o do_v in_o the_o other_o so_o it_o be_v most_o rational_o evident_a in_o the_o present_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o mankind_n as_o will_v be_v evident_a in_o consideration_n of_o these_o ensue_a particular_n 1._o it_o show_v a_o man_n the_o right_a use_n of_o the_o creature_n viz._n to_o be_v subservient_fw-fr and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la the_o want_n of_o a_o true_a and_o rational_a use_n of_o secular_a matter_n be_v a_o great_a cause_n of_o the_o great_a unhappiness_n of_o man_n as_o when_o he_o desire_v riches_n because_o he_o will_v be_v rich_a or_o honour_n because_o he_o will_v be_v great_a or_o delicate_a fare_n because_o he_o will_v eat_v now_o when_o man_n mistake_v the_o use_n of_o thing_n rest_v in_o that_o as_o a_o end_n which_o be_v only_o useful_a to_o something_o else_o this_o breed_v these_o disorder_n in_o and_o among_o man_n which_o do_v disturb_v even_o their_o outward_a peace_n and_o happiness_n this_o be_v regulate_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v set_v upon_o the_o love_n of_o god_n it_o take_v off_o any_o inordinate_a love_n to_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n to_o which_o it_o be_v proper_o conducible_a and_o therefore_o in_o order_n to_o that_o only_a rational_o desirable_a 2._o it_o add_v a_o sweetness_n to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n which_o can_v be_v have_v without_o it_o because_o it_o mingle_v with_o it_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o great_a master_n of_o this_o family_n of_o the_o earth_n that_o provide_v it_o the_o sense_n and_o security_n of_o his_o love_n that_o give_v it_o and_o so_o bring_v up_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n to_o a_o high_a station_n and_o near_o to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o true_a felicity_n of_o the_o soul._n a_o blue_a ribon_n buy_v in_o a_o shop_n and_o a_o blue_a ribon_n give_v by_o a_o king_n in_o token_n of_o honour_n be_v the_o same_o thing_n but_o with_o the_o latter_a there_o be_v a_o mingle_n of_o somewhat_o else_o with_o it_o as_o it_o import_v a_o gift_n from_o a_o king_n in_o token_n of_o honour_n and_o therefore_o higher-prized_n 3._o it_o take_v away_o all_o that_o sollicitousness_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n and_o all_o that_o anguish_n in_o the_o loss_n and_o all_o that_o anxiety_n in_o the_o provision_n of_o external_a accommodation_n though_o in_o very_a truth_n the_o real_a happiness_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la be_v its_o subsistence_n according_a to_o the_o perfect_a degree_n of_o his_o be_v which_o be_v the_o perfection_n of_o
the_o compositum_fw-la yet_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o the_o tumultuousness_n or_o quietness_n of_o the_o mind_n do_v much_o conduce_v to_o the_o happiness_n or_o unhappiness_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la that_o man_n that_o live_v content_o with_o 20._o l._n a_o year_n be_v happy_a than_o he_o that_o live_v as_o well_o with_o the_o same_o or_o a_o great_a portion_n but_o with_o a_o anxious_a trouble_a crave_v unsatisfied_a mind_n now_o when_o the_o soul_n true_o know_v and_o be_v true_o set_v upon_o his_o supreme_a end_n it_o know_v its_o duty_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o idle_a it_o know_v the_o power_n of_o his_o maker_n therefore_o be_v not_o anxious_a and_o know_v the_o use_n and_o value_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o therefore_o value_v it_o no_o far_o than_o it_o be_v useful_a to_o its_o proper_a end_n it_o know_v the_o love_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o maker_n and_o therefore_o refer_v all_o to_o he_o as_o he_o that_o want_v neither_o power_n to_o provide_v for_o it_o nor_o wisdom_n to_o proportion_n nor_o love_n to_o communicate_v according_a to_o the_o exigence_n of_o my_o condition_n and_o admit_v he_o do_v his_o will_n must_v be_v do_v and_o not_o i_o i_o be_o provide_v well_o enough_o for_o if_o here_o i_o be_o content_v and_o hereafter_o save_v this_o sweeten_v any_o loss_n 4._o though_o the_o great_a god_n be_v absolute_a lord_n of_o his_o creature_n and_o be_v not_o bind_v far_o to_o he_o than_o it_o please_v he_o though_o his_o creature_n be_v most_o conformable_a to_o his_o will_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o think_v but_o if_o our_o heart_n be_v and_o do_v continue_v right_o set_v upon_o our_o great_a and_o supreme_a end_n and_o can_v hold_v to_o it_o that_o we_o shall_v want_v a_o convenient_a portion_n of_o these_o outward_a blessing_n which_o will_v make_v our_o life_n comfortable_a and_o happy_a but_o here_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o man_n that_o any_o confluence_n of_o external_o present_o take_v off_o his_o soul_n from_o a_o perfect_a pursuit_n of_o our_o great_a end_n and_o fasten_v upon_o those_o external_o therefore_o the_o wise_a god_n oftentimes_o cut_v out_o to_o the_o best_a of_o man_n a_o small_a and_o a_o unpleasant_a viaticum_fw-la that_o they_o may_v not_o linger_v in_o the_o way_n to_o their_o great_a end._n and_o as_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o the_o whole_a compositum_fw-la in_o this_o life_n so_o in_o the_o resurrection_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v reunite_v to_o the_o body_n both_o shall_v have_v a_o perfect_a fruition_n of_o happiness_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o presence_n favour_n and_o communion_n of_o god._n how_o far_o forth_o the_o soul_n separate_v be_v capable_a of_o its_o own_o nature_n of_o any_o new_a knowledge_n which_o it_o have_v not_o before_o in_o a_o angelical_a way_n or_o how_o far_o it_o be_v able_a to_o retain_v or_o improve_v those_o conception_n and_o species_n that_o it_o have_v here_o and_o whether_o it_o have_v a_o complete_a operation_n or_o what_o degree_n of_o fruition_n it_o have_v of_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n it_o be_v above_o our_o reach_n to_o determine_v only_o this_o we_o may_v conjecture_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o place_v in_o that_o perfect_a degree_n of_o be_v and_o subsistence_n as_o be_v the_o angel_n in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v make_v in_o order_n to_o a_o body_n by_o which_o in_o it_o it_o exercise_v its_o motion_n faculty_n and_o operation_n and_o therefore_o without_o all_o question_n when_o it_o shall_v hereafter_o be_v reunite_v to_o a_o most_o perfect_a spiritualised_a body_n indissoluble_o it_o shall_v not_o thereby_o receive_v any_o diminution_n or_o abatement_n of_o its_o perfection_n and_o felicity_n but_o will_v thereby_o become_v more_o capable_a of_o a_o more_o perfect_a and_o full_a fruition_n of_o that_o supreme_a good_a which_o will_v then_o be_v communicate_v perfect_o to_o the_o whole_a compositum_fw-la but_o this_o by_o the_o way_n latius_fw-la infra_fw-la chap._n move_v to_o this_o end_n by_o a_o certain_a rule_n and_o certain_a mean_n and_o herein_o be_v see_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o wisdom_n such_o be_v the_o instinct_n and_o inclination_n of_o the_o creature_n by_o which_o they_o move_v to_o their_o special_a end_n and_o perfection_n and_o as_o these_o inclination_n be_v plant_v by_o god_n in_o the_o inferior_a creature_n the_o like_a be_v do_v though_o in_o a_o different_a manner_n in_o man_n at_o first_o in_o all_o probability_n of_o reason_n the_o difference_n be_v only_o thus_o in_o the_o creature_n all_o that_o be_v conduce_v to_o their_o end_n be_v make_v a_o piece_n or_o quality_n of_o their_o nature_n in_o man_n not_o altogether_o as_o shall_v be_v see_v we_o have_v find_v man_n endue_v with_o two_o great_a faculty_n understanding_n and_o will_n and_o in_o these_o principal_o consist_v the_o receptiveness_n of_o his_o happiness_n and_o the_o motion_n to_o it_o 1._o touch_v the_o understanding_n it_o be_v a_o faculty_n receptive_a of_o a_o object_n that_o may_v be_v know_v but_o that_o object_n be_v not_o of_o the_o nature_n or_o essence_n of_o the_o understanding_n but_o distinct_a from_o it_o so_o that_o man_n may_v be_v create_v a_o intellectual_a creature_n yet_o till_o such_o time_n as_o natural_o through_o the_o sense_n or_o supernatural_o by_o the_o immediate_a infusion_n or_o demonstration_n and_o such_o be_v his_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n that_o when_o the_o creature_n move_v according_a to_o the_o law_n and_o will_n of_o its_o maker_n it_o do_v without_o fail_v attain_v that_o happiness_n whereof_o it_o be_v capable_a because_o it_o move_v to_o that_o end_n for_o which_o it_o be_v appoint_v by_o the_o first_o cause_n now_o because_o god_n have_v make_v man_n a_o rational_a
