as_o much_o as_o if_o the_o profession_n of_o faith_n make_v by_o surety_n may_v admit_v they_o to_o the_o one_o sacrament_n it_o may_v also_o qualify_v they_o for_o the_o other_o true_o indeed_o so_o it_o may_v supper_n if_o this_o be_v all_o that_o be_v require_v but_o there_o be_v much_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o two_o sacrament_n and_o so_o divers_a reason_n why_o infant_n may_v be_v admit_v to_o the_o one_o and_o not_o to_o the_o other_o baptism_n be_v for_o admission_n and_o regeneration_n the_o lord_n supper_n for_o confirmation_n and_o preservation_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o receiv_v the_o beginning_n â—hat_n as_o yet_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o receiv_v the_o end_n and_o consummation_n baptism_n require_v no_o sacramental_a action_n from_o the_o party_n so_o do_v the_o lord_n supper_n 16_o in_o that_o he_o be_v a_o mere_a patient_n in_o this_o he_o must_v be_v a_o agent_n he_o must_v take_v and_o eat_v which_o the_o infant_n can_v do_v last_o though_o repentance_n and_o faith_n be_v require_v in_o the_o way_n of_o qualification_n to_o both_o sacrament_n yet_o to_o fit_v a_o man_n for_o the_o worthy_a partake_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n other_o grace_n and_o gracious_a action_n be_v require_v which_o be_v incompatible_a with_o the_o age_n of_o infancy_n to_o the_o handle_n of_o which_o i_o now_o return_v have_v thus_o fair_o rid_v my_o hand_n of_o these_o brainsick_a and_o froward_a spirit_n the_o anabaptist_n and_o their_o abetter_n chap._n xvi_o of_o the_o qualification_n peculiar_a to_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o first_o of_o thankfulness_n thankfulness_n for_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o special_a branch_n of_o our_o qualification_n for_o the_o right_n and_o worthy_a receive_n of_o the_o supper_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o church_n have_v put_v word_n into_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o minister_n that_o after_o he_o have_v exhort_v the_o people_n to_o repentance_n faith_n and_o new-obedience_n he_o shall_v add_v this_o communion_n and_o above_o all_o thing_n you_o must_v give_v most_o humble_a and_o hearty_a thanks_o to_o god_n the_o father_n sonn_v and_o holy_a ghost_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o the_o world_n by_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n both_o god_n and_o man._n and_o in_o the_o catechism_n among_o other_o thing_n touch_v which_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o examine_v himself_o before_o he_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o church_n have_v intersert_v this_o a_o thankful_a remembrance_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ._n note_v here_o 1._o a_o remembrance_n the_o reason_n
suppose_v that_o one_o of_o the_o corinthian_n shall_v have_v be_v so_o wilful_a 6._o as_o to_o deny_v this_o medium_n this_o argument_n of_o saint_n paul_n what_o be_v there_o to_o confirm_v the_o argument_n and_o to_o convince_v the_o gainsayer_n but_o only_o the_o practice_n of_o infants-baptism_n this_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v here_o presuppose_v else_o do_v the_o argument_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n and_o overthrow_v itself_o 2._o object_n circumcision_n be_v but_o a_o seal_n of_o the_o old_a covenant_n even_o the_o law_n which_o be_v make_v to_o abraham_n and_o to_o his_o child_n after_o the_o flesh_n this_o fleshy_a covenant_n have_v a_o seal_n in_o the_o flesh_n viz._n circumsion_n but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n touch_v life_n and_o salvation_n which_o be_v make_v only_o with_o believer_n thus_o the_o anabaptist_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v elude_v the_o argument_n draw_v from_o the_o circumcision_n of_o infant_n and_o whereas_o the_o text_n of_o saint_n paul_n do_v direct_o cross_v this_o his_o base_a esteem_n of_o circumcision_n honour_v it_o with_o that_o worthy_a title_n a_o seal_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n 4.11_o the_o anabaptist_n expound_v it_o thus_o a_o seal_n of_o his_o faith_n not_o in_o the_o messiah_n but_o in_o that_o promise_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a wherein_o he_o bewray_v a_o twofold_a ignorance_n anabaptist_n first_o in_o disjoyn_v these_o two_o viz._n his_o faith_n in_o the_o messiah_n and_o his_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n which_o be_v subordinate_a the_o first_o and_o second_o only_o be_v mention_v gen._n 15._o but_o questionless_a the_o three_o include_v and_o ratify_v by_o a_o formal_a covenant_n to_o abraham_n who_o believe_v and_o be_v thereupon_o justify_v afterwards_o in_o gen._n 17._o the_o second_o alone_o mention_v but_o questionless_a the_o other_o include_v and_o all_o ratify_v by_o the_o sacrament_n of_o circumcision_n which_o be_v to_o he_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n which_o abraham_n have_v before_o he_o be_v circumcise_v that_o all_o be_v include_v in_o both_o place_n though_o not_o all_o mention_v may_v yet_o further_o appear_v by_o this_o that_o in_o gen._n 22._o when_o god_n will_v last_o manifest_v how_o his_o covenant_n and_o seal_n have_v build_v up_o abraham_n in_o faith_n by_o that_o sore_a trial_n they_o be_v again_o all_o three_o repeat_v his_o faith_n accept_v and_o commend_v this_o do_v not_o or_o will_v not_o the_o anabaptist_n receiv_v but_o disjoyn_v those_o which_o shall_v be_v conjoin_v as_o be_v all_o apprehend_v by_o the_o same_o faith_n another_o part_n of_o his_o ignorance_n be_v the_o misinterpretation_n of_o that_o phrase_n the_o righteousness_n not_o the_o essential_a righteousness_n of_o god_n but_o the_o benefit_n of_o justification_n or_o impute_a righteousness_n which_o he_o bestow_v on_o believer_n for_o their_o justification_n this_o benefit_n god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o abraham_n do_v seal_v it_o up_o to_o he_o afterward_o by_o circumcision_n which_o be_v therefore_o call_v not_o the_o seal_n of_o his_o faith_n as_o the_o anabaptist_n speak_v full_a ignorant_o but_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o righteousness_n that_o be_v of_o justification_n which_o come_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o work_n we_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o infant_n of_o believer_n may_v be_v lawful_o baptize_v that_o by_o baptism_n they_o may_v be_v admit_v into_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n nay_o inasmuch_o as_o baptism_n be_v the_o sacrament_n of_o admission_n and_o no_o time_n fit_a to_o incorporate_v the_o bud_n of_o christian_n into_o christ_n than_o while_o they_o be_v bud_n that_o so_o betimes_o grace_n may_v prevent_v the_o growth_n of_o natural_a corruption_n infancy_n be_v the_o fit_a time_n for_o baptism_n nay_o the_o only_a time_n in_o the_o successive_a age_n of_o the_o church_n so_o far_o be_v god_n from_o confirmation_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n not_o enough_o that_o man_n be_v bear_v live_v and_o lively_a except_o a_o care_n be_v have_v of_o their_o preservation_n so_o in_o the_o case_n of_o spiritual_a life_n not_o enough_o that_o we_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n except_o we_o be_v confirm_v in_o grace_n we_o may_v lose_v our_o former_a hope_n of_o future_a glory_n to_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o profit_v they_o who_o end_n in_o the_o flesh_n for_o which_o cause_n as_o the_o scripture_n be_v full_a of_o exhortation_n to_o constancy_n and_o perseverance_n to_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a so_o have_v god_n ordain_v also_o a_o sacrament_n for_o our_o preservation_n and_o certain_a confirmation_n in_o grace_n and_o holiness_n this_o be_v to_o we_o the_o tree_n of_o life_n and_o immortality_n here_o be_v provide_v for_o we_o that_o bread_n of_o life_n 6._o of_o which_o who_o so_o eat_v shall_v live_v for_o ever_o here_o be_v that_o true_a nectar_n and_o ambrosia_n which_o do_v continual_o renew_v the_o youth_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n within_o we_o but_o of_o this_o more_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o benefit_n now_o let_v this_o only_o be_v add_v that_o this_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v for_o this_o end_n it_o will_v hence_o follow_v that_o all_o those_o be_v to_o be_v bar_v from_o this_o sacrament_n which_o without_o breach_n of_o charity_n may_v be_v think_v as_o yet_o not_o admit_v into_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n such_o i_o count_v all_o person_n unbaptise_v these_o must_v be_v send_v first_o to_o the_o laver_n of_o regeneration_n before_o they_o be_v admit_v to_o this_o sacrament_n of_o confirmation_n in_o vain_a be_v food_n seek_v where_o there_o be_v no_o life_n this_o also_o must_v be_v think_v upon_o by_o they_o that_o address_v themselves_o to_o this_o sacrament_n this_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v to_o this_o end_n supper_n do_v i_o propound_v the_o same_o end_n to_o myself_o in_o my_o partake_n if_o not_o what_o good_a can_v i_o expect_v thence_o shall_v i_o propound_v to_o myself_o another_o end_n than_o that_o which_o god_n have_v i_o further_a than_o by_o register_n that_o i_o have_v be_v incorporate_v into_o christ_n what_o fruit_n of_o my_o baptism_n do_v i_o find_v and_o feel_v in_o myself_o be_v i_o unbaptise_v in_o the_o flesh_n the_o church_n will_v bar_v i_o shall_v i_o not_o bar_v myself_o till_o i_o find_v and_o feel_v my_o soul_n baptize_v with_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n such_o meditation_n as_o these_o will_v
