the_o prophet_n speak_v in_o the_o end_n of_o this_o psalm_n that_o he_o have_v visit_v the_o earth_n and_o enrich_v it_o with_o the_o river_n of_o god_n &_o bless_v the_o spring_a of_o it_o have_v crown_v the_o year_n with_o his_o goodness_n and_o have_v make_v his_o path_n to_o drop_v fatness_n let_v we_o no_o think_v that_o this_o be_v from_o chance_n or_o nature_n but_o let_v we_o with_o thankful_a heart_n acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v as_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o visitation_n and_o blessing_n of_o god_n let_v every_o heart_n and_o every_o mouth_n say_v bless_a be_v the_o lord_n kind_n can_v have_v place_n in_o he_o it_o shall_v be_v either_o from_o imperfection_n to_o perfection_n or_o from_o perfection_n to_o imperfection_n but_o neither_o of_o these_o can_v be_v no_o new_a of_o the_o church_n be_v to_o be_v deal_v with_o nam_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v account_v as_o a_o heathen_a and_o as_o a_o publican_n he_o now_o in_o the_o word_n that_o i_o have_v read_v show_v what_o be_v the_o efficacy_n &_o power_n of_o the_o sentenco_n of_o the_o church_n even_o that_o it_o be_v no_o less_o then_o if_o it_o be_v pronounce_v in_o heaven_n and_o by_o god_n himself_o a_o man_n reject_v by_o the_o church_n and_o ordain_v to_o be_v account_v as_o a_o heathen_a and_o a_o publican_n may_v have_v think_v within_o himself_o what_o albeit_o such_o or_o such_o man_n esteem_v so_o of_o i_o if_o they_o misregard_n i_o &_o account_v of_o i_o as_o of_o a_o heathen_a or_o publican_n i_o shall_v do_v the_o like_a to_o they_o and_o shall_v as_o much_o disesteem_v they_o no_o say_v our_o saviour_n it_o be_v not_o only_o their_o bare_a sentence_n and_o esteem_v that_o be_v to_o be_v look_v too_o that_o which_o they_o do_v right_o in_o this_o kind_n be_v ratify_v confirm_v and_o allow_v by_o god_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o that_o will_v despise_v they_o must_v despise_v god_n and_o heaven_n
how_o can_v he_o have_v express_v it_o more_o full_o then_o in_o the_o term_n which_o he_o have_v use_v to_o the_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n whatsoever_o you_o bind_v on_o earth_n it_o shall_v be_v bind_v in_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n who_o sin_n soever_o you_o retain_v they_o shall_v be_v retain_v etc._n etc._n three_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o saviour_n speech_n when_o he_o promise_v this_o power_n which_o be_v with_o a_o serious_a and_o vehement_a attestation_n very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o and_o the_o ceremony_n use_v at_o the_o performance_n of_o here_o by_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o bare_o a_o declarative_a but_o also_o a_o effectual_a power_n which_o work_v some_o effect_n upon_o man_n so_o the_o holy_a father_n have_v understand_v this_o chrisost_n in_o his_o 3._o book_n of_o the_o priesthood_n say_v that_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o man_n that_o be_v upon_o earth_n a_o power_n to_o dispose_v of_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n this_o power_n say_v he_o he_o have_v not_o give_v to_o the_o angel_n or_o archangel_n for_o to_o who_o of_o they_o have_v he_o say_v to_o the_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o whatsoever_o thou_o shall_v bind_v on_o earth_n etc._n etc._n earthly_a king_n say_v he_o have_v power_n to_o bind_v &_o loose_v also_o but_o their_o power_n extend_v to_o the_o body_n of_o man_n only_o whereas_o this_o power_n reach_v unto_o the_o soul_n and_o unto_o heaven_n that_o which_o the_o servant_n do_v here_o beneath_o the_o lord_n confirm_v above_o and_o the_o lord_n in_o before_o the_o lose_n in_o heaven_n so_o write_v upon_o the_o 20_o of_o s._n john_n on_o these_o word_n who_o sin_n soever_o you_o retain_v they_o be_v retain_v he_o say_v that_o our_o saviour_n endue_v his_o apostle_n with_o such_o a_o power_n as_o a_o king_n give_v to_o governor_n under_o he_o when_o he_o give_v they_o power_n to_o cast_v into_o prison_n and_o to_o take_v out_o of_o it_o and_o write_v upon_o these_o word_n to_o thou_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n matth._n 16._o he_o say_v that_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o a_o mortal_a man_n the_o power_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n for_o this_o cause_n our_o saviour_n add_v here_o these_o word_n on_o earth_n whatsoever_o you_o bind_v on_o earth_n to_o what_o purpose_n be_v how_o their_o bind_a and_o lose_v be_v accompany_v with_o bind_v and_o lose_v in_o heaven_n the_o bond_n wherewith_o pastor_n by_o virtue_n of_o the_o key_n do_v bind_v sinner_n be_v direct_o and_o immediate_o a_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n exercise_v about_o sinew_n as_o it_o as_o a_o offence_n of_o the_o church_n church_n so_o their_o lose_n be_v direct_o and_o immediate_o a_o untie_n and_o lose_v of_o that_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n wherewith_o they_o have_v bind_v a_o sinner_n whence_o of_o necessity_n their_o bind_n most_o go_v before_o their_o lose_n in_o this_o kind_n they_o can_v loose_v nothing_o this_o way_n but_o that_o which_o before_o they_o have_v bind_v but_o how_o then_o you_o will_v say_v do_v their_o bind_n or_o lose_v reach_n to_o a_o man_n sin_n as_o it_o be_v a_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o purge_v of_o the_o soul_n so_o in_o the_o matter_n that_o we_o have_v in_o hand_n the_o pastor_n bind_v the_o person_n guilty_a with_o a_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n direct_o and_o again_o lose_v that_o same_o bond_n by_o ecclesiastical_a absolution_n or_o reconciliation_n yet_o by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n promise_n set_v down_o in_o these_o word_n upon_o the_o do_n of_o this_o god_n in_o heaven_n do_v bind_v or_o loose_v the_o sin_n of_o such_o a_o man_n thus_o we_o see_v how_o god_n not_o only_o principal_o but_o also_o alone_o immediate_o take_v away_o sin_n for_o the_o minister_n only_o perform_v a_o ecclesiastical_a action_n upon_o the_o do_v whereof_o god_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o promise_n take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o such_o a_o man_n second_o nication_n you_o may_v ask_v wherein_o this_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n consist_v i_o answer_v it_o stand_v in_o a_o certain_a excommunication_n whereby_o a_o grievous_a offender_n be_v separate_v in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n from_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o from_o the_o society_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o according_a the_o lose_v oppose_v hereunto_o consist_v in_o the_o reconciliation_n other_o be_v call_v the_o great_a in_o that_o a_o man_n be_v bind_v for_o some_o grievous_a offence_n by_o debar_v he_o from_o the_o society_n of_o the_o faithful_a in_o some_o thing_n especial_o in_o the_o participation_n of_o the_o bless_a mystery_n of_o the_o body_n &_o blood_n of_o out_z lord_n and_o by_o impose_v of_o the_o work_n of_o penance_n and_o humiliation_n this_o be_v call_v a_o ponetentiall_a and_o medeoinall_a excommunication_n because_o the_o chief_a end_n of_o it_o be_v to_o cure_v he_o that_o have_v sin_v from_o that_o disease_n wherein_o he_o have_v fall_v this_o kind_n of_o bind_v we_o use_v towards_o grievous_a sinner_n who_o submite_v themselves_o to_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o church_n and_o in_o the_o ancient_a church_n it_o be_v use_v with_o great_a vigour_n and_o severity_n in_o the_o first_o 300_o year_n when_o the_o devotion_n of_o christian_n be_v fervent_a and_o their_o purity_n great_a man_n be_v not_o ordinary_o admit_v to_o this_o outward_a repentance_n till_o for_o a_o long_a time_n with_o many_o tear_n and_o with_o great_a token_n of_o unfeigned_a forrow_n they_o have_v earnest_o entreat_v to_o be_v admit_v in_o the_o number_n of_o public_a penitent_n when_o that_o be_v grant_v than_o they_o be_v not_o immediate_o receive_v to_o their_o public_a repentance_n but_o be_v thrust_v down_o as_o it_o be_v first_o to_o the_o degree_n of_o the_o catechumeny_n or_o those_o who_o be_v yet_o unbaptise_v and_o do_v but_o learn_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o christian_n religion_n and_o in_o this_o degree_n they_o be_v call_v
hearer_n because_o of_o new_a they_o be_v again_o instruct_v the_o mystery_n of_o christian_n religion_n for_o it_o be_v presume_v that_o they_o who_o have_v so_o grievous_o fall_v have_v never_o right_o learn_v these_o heavenly_a mystery_n and_o therefore_o be_v teach_v again_o especial_o concern_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n judgement_n against_o sin_n that_o they_o may_v the_o more_o willing_o undergo_v what_o be_v enjoin_v they_o this_o do_v they_o be_v receive_v to_o their_o repentance_n wherein_o for_o diverse_a year_n sometime_o for_o seven_o more_o or_o less_o according_a to_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o offence_n they_o be_v exercise_v with_o most_o laborious_a work_n of_o humiliation_n and_o mortification_n tertul_n in_o the_o 9_o chap._n of_o his_o book_n of_o repentance_n say_v that_o they_o do_v humble_v themselves_o in_o sackcloth_n &_o ash_n they_o do_v lie_v prostrate_a upon_o the_o ground_n they_o do_v nowrish_v their_o prayer_n with_o fast_v they_o do_v weep_v &_o mourn_v and_o cry_v to_o god_n and_o do_v humble_o beseech_v pastor_n and_o all_o faithful_a people_n to_o pray_v for_o they_o s._n cyprian_n speak_v of_o this_o same_o matter_n say_v to_o they_o that_o have_v fall_v that_o it_o behove_v they_o to_o pray_v earnest_o to_o pass_v over_o the_o day_n in_o sorrow_n to_o spend_v over_o the_o night_n in_o mourning_n and_o tear_n to_o god_n but_o they_o be_v enjoin_v as_o mean_n appoint_v by_o god_n to_o promove_v unfeigned_a sorrow_n and_o detestation_n of_o their_o sin_n which_o man_n after_o great_a fault_n especial_o do_v not_o
