XXIII 1 David in his last words professeth his faith in Gods promises to be beyond sense or experience 6 The different state of the wicked 8 A catalogue of Davids mighty men NOw these be the last words of David David the son of Jesse said and the man who was raised up on high the anointed of the God of Jacob and the sweet psalmist of Israel said 2 The spirit of the LORD spake by me and his word was in my tongue 3 The God of Israel said the Rock of Israel spake to me ‖ Or. Be thou ruleâ— c. He that ruleth over men must be just ruling in the fear of God 4 And he shall be as the light of the morning when the sun riseth even a morning without clouds as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain 5 Although my house be not so with God yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant ordered in all things and sure for this is all my salvation and all my desire although he make it not to grow 6 ¶ But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away because they cannot be taken with hands 7 Bâ—t the man that shall touch them must be †Heb. filled senced with iron and the staff of a spear and they shall be utterly burnt with fire in the same place 8 ¶ These be the names of the mighty men whom David had ‖ Or Joshebâ—asâ—â—bet the Tachmonite head of the three The Tachmonite that sat in the sâ—at chief among the captains the same was Adino the Eznite ‖ See 1 Chr. 11.11 he life up his spear against eight hundred †Heb. slain whom he slew at one time 9 And after him was * 1 Chr. 11.12 Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battel and the men of Israel were gone away 10 He arose and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary and his hand clave unto the sword and the LORD wrought a great victory that day and the people returned after him onely to spoil 11 And after him was * 1 Chr. 11 2â— Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite and the Philistines were gathered together ‖ Or for sâ—raâ—ing into a troup where was a piece of ground full of lentiles and the people fled from the Philistines 12 But he stood in the midâ—t of the ground and defended it and slew the Philistines and the LORD wrought a great victory 13 And ‖ Or the three captains over the thirty three of the thirty chief went down and came to David in the harvest-time unto the cave of Adullam and the troup of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim 14 And David was then in an hold and the garison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem 15 And David longed and said Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Beth-lehâ—m which is by the gate 16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem that was by the gate and took

XXIV 1 Wickedness goeth often unpunished 17 There is a secret judgement for the wicked WHy seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty do they that know him not see his days 2 Some remove the * Deut. 1â— 14. 27.17 land-marks they violently take away flocks and ‖ Or feed them feed thereof 3 They drive away the ass of the father-less they take the widows ox for a pledge 4 They turn the needy out of the way the poor of the earth hide themselves together 5 Behold as wilde asses in the desert go they forth to their work rising betimes for a prey the wilderness yeeldeth food for them and for their children 6 They reap every one his †Heb. mingled corn or dredge corn in the field and †Heb. the wicked cather the vintage they gather the vintage of the wicked 7 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing that they have no covering in the cold 8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a shelter 9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor 10 They cause him to go naked without clothing and they take away the sheaf from the hungry 11 Which make oyl within their walls and tread their wine-presses and suffer thirst 12 Men groan from out of the city and the soul of the wounded crieth out yet God layeth not folly to them 13 They are of those that rebel against the light they know not the ways thereof nor abide in the paths thereof 14 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy and in the night is as a thief 15 The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight saying No eye shall see me and †Heb. setteth his face insecret disguiseth his face 16 In the dark they dig through houses which they had marked for themselves in the day-time they know not the light 17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death if one know them they are in the terrours of the shadow of death 18 He is swift as their waters their portion is cursed in the earth he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards 19 Drought and heat †Heb. violently take consume the snow-waters so doth the grave those which have sinned 20 The womb shall forget him the worm shall feed sweetly on him he shall be no more remembred and wickedness shall be broken as a tree 21 He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not and doeth not good to the widow 22 He draweth also the mighty with his power he riseth up ‖ Or be trusteth not his own life and no man is sure of life 23 Though it be given him to be in safety whereon he resteth yet his eyes are upon their ways 24 They are exalted for a little while but †Heb. are not are gone and brought low they are †Heb. closed up taken out of the way as all other and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn 25 And if it be not so now who will make me a liar and make my speech nothing worth CHAP. XXV Bildad sheweth that man cannot be justified before God THen answered Bildad the Shuhite and said 2 Dominion and fear are with him he maketh peace in his high places 3 Is there any number of his armies and upon whom doth not his light arise 4 * Ch. 4.17 c. 15.14 c. How then can man be justified with God or how can he be clean that is born of a woman 5 Behold even to the moon and it shineth not yea the stars are not pure in his sight 6 How much less man that is * Psal 22.6 a worm and the son of man which is a worm CHAP. XXVI 1 Job reproving the unebar table spirit of Bildad 5 acknowledgeth the power of God to be infinite and unsearchable BUt Job answered and said 2 How hast thou helped him that is without power how savest thou the arm that hath no strength 3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is 4 To whom hast thou uttered words and whose spirit came from thee 5 Dead things are formed from under the waters ‖ Or with the inhabitants and the inhabitants thereof 6 * Prov. 15.11 Hell is naked before him and destruction hath no covering 7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place and hangeth the eatch upon nothing 8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds and the cloud is not rent under them 9 He holdeth back the face of his throne spreadeth his cloud upon it 10 He hath compassed the waters with pounds †Heb. until the eâ—â— of theâ—â— with darkness until the day and night come to an end 11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof 12 He divideth the sea with his power and by his understanding he smiteth through †Heb. pride the proud 13 By hâ—s spirit he hath garnished the heavens his hand hath formed the crooked serpent 14 Lo these are parts of his ways but how little a portion is heard of him but the thunder of his power who can understand CHAP. XXVII 1 Joâ— protesieth his sincerity 8 The hypocrite is without hope 11 The blesings which the wicked have are turned into curses MOreover Job †Heb. added to take up continued his parable and said 2 As God liveth who hath taken away my judgement and the Almighty who hath †Heb. maâ—e my soul bitter vexed my soul 3 All the while my breath is in mâ— and ‖ That is the â—râ—ath which God gave him the spirit of God is in my nostrils 4 My lips shall not speak wickedness nor my tongue utter deceit 5 God forbid that I should justifie you till I die I will not remove my integrity from me 6 My righteousness I hold fast and will not let it go my heart shall not reproach me †Heb. from my days so long as I live 7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous 8 * Matth. 16.26 For what is the hope of the hypocrite though he hath

XXXVI 1 Elihu sâ—â—weth hâ—w God is juâ—â— in his ways 16 how Jâ—bs sins hinder Gods blâ—ssings â—4 Gods works are to be magnified ELihu also proceeded and said 2 Suffer me a little and I will shew thee †Heb. that there are yet words for God that I have yet to speak on Gods behalf 3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar and will ascribe righteousness to my maker 4 For truly my words shall not be false he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee 5 Behold God is mighty and despiseth not any he is mighty in strength and †Heb. heart wisdom 6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked but giveth right to the ‖ Or afflicted poor 7 * Psal 34.15 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous but with kings are they on the throne yea he doth establish them for ever and they are exalted 8 And if they be bound in setters and be holden in cords of affliction 9 Then he sheweth them their work and their transgressions that they have exceeded 10 He openeth also their ear to discipline and commandeth that they return from iniquity 11 If they obey and serve him they shall * Chap 21.13 spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasures 12 But if they obey not †Heb. they shall pass away by the sword they shall perish by the sword and they shall die without knowledge 13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath they cry not when he bindeth them 14 †Heb. their soul dieth They die in youth and their life is among the ‖ Or sodâ—mites unclean 15 He delivereth the ‖ Or afflicted poor in his affliction and openeth their ears in oppression 16 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place where there is no straitness and †Heb. the rest of thy table that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness 17 But thou hast fulfilled the judgement of the wicked ‖ Or judgement and justice should uphold thee judgement and justice take hold on thee 18 Because there is wrath beware lest he take thee away with his stroke then a great ransom cannot †Heb. turn theâ— aside deliver thee 19 Will he esteem thy riches no not gold nor all the forces of strength 20 Desire not the night when people are cut off in their place 21 Take heed regard not iniquity for this hast thou chosen rather then affliction 22 Behold God exalteth by his power who teacheth like him 23 Who hath enjoyned him his way or who can say Thou hast wrought iniquity 24 Remember that thou magnifie his work which men behold 25 Every man may see it man may behold it afar off 26 Behold God is great and we know him not neither can the number of his years be searched out 27 For he maketh small the drops of water they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof 28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly 29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds or the noise of his tabernacle 30 Behold he spreadeth his light upon it and covereth †Heb. the roots the bottom of the sea 31 For by them judgeth he the people he giveth meat in abundance 32 With clouds he covereth the light and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt 33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it the cattel also concerning †Heb. that which goeth up the vapour CHAP. XXXVII 1 God is to be feared because of his great works 15 His wisdom is unsearchable in them AT this also my heart trembleth and is moved out of his place 2 †Heb. bear in bearing Hear attentively the noise of his voice and the sound that goeth out of his mouth 3 He directeth it under the whole heaven and his †Heb. light lightning unto the †Heb. wings of the earth ends of the earth 4 After it a voice roareth he thundreth with the voice of his excellency and he will not stay them when his voice is heard 5 God thundreth marvellously with his voice great things doeth he which we cannot comprehend 6 For †Psal 147.16 17. he saith to the snow Be thou on the earth †Heb. and to the shower of rain and to the showers of rain of his strength likewise to the small rain and to the great rain of his strength 7 He sealeth up the hand of every man that all men may know his work 8 Then the beasts go into dens and remain in their places 9 †Heb. out of the chamber Out of the south cometh the whirlwind and cold out of the * north 10 By the breath of God frost is given and the breadth of the waters is straitned 11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud he scattereth †Heb. scattering winds his bright cloud 12 And it is turned about by his counsels that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth 13 He causeth it to come whether for †Heb. the cloud of his light correction or for his land or for mercy 14 Hearken unto this O Job stand still and consider the wondrous works of God 15 Dost thou know when God disposed them and caused the light of his cloud to shine 16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds †Heb. a rod. the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge 17 How thy garments are warm when he quieteth the earth by the south wind 18 Hast
thou with him spread out the skie which is strong and as a molten looking-glass 19 Teach us what we shall say unto him for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness 20 Shall it be told him that I speak if a man speak surely he shall be swallowed up 21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds but the wind passeth and cleanseth them 22 †Heb gold Fair weather cometh out of the north with God is terrible majesty 23 Touching the Almighty we cannot finde him out he is excellent in power and in judgement and in plenty of justice he will not afflict 24 Men do therefore fear him he respecteth not any that are wise of heart CHAP. XXXVIII 1 God challengeth Job to answer 4 God by his mighty works convinceth Job of ignorance 31 and of imbecillity THen the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said 2 Who is this that darkneth counsel by words without knowledge 3 Gird up now thy loyns like a man for I will demand of thee and †Heb. make me know answer thou me 4 * Ps 104.5 Prov. 30.4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth declare †Heb. if thou knoweâ—t understanding if thou hast understanding 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof if thou knowest or who hath stretched the line upon it 6 Whereupon are the †Heb. sockets foundations thereof †Heb. made to sink fastned or who laid the corner-stone thereof 7 When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy 8 * Ps 104.9 Or who shut up the sea with doors when it brake forth as if it had issued out of the womb 9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof and thick darkness a swaddling-band for it 10 And ‖ Or established my deâ—ree upon it brake up for it my decreed place and set bars and doors 11 And said Hitherto shalt thou come but no further and here shall †Heb. the pride of thy waves thy proud waves be stayed 12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days and caused the day-spring to know his place 13 That it might take hold of the †Heb. wings ends of the earth that the wicked might be shaken out of it 14 It is turned as clay to the seal and they stand as a garment 15 And from the wicked their light is withholden and the high arm shall be broken 16 Hast thou entred into the springs of the sea or hast thou walked in the search of the depth 17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death 18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth declare if thou knowest it all 19 Where is the way where light dwelleth and as for darkness where is the place thereof 20 That thou shouldest take it ‖ Or at to the bound thereof and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof 21 Knowest thou it because thou wast then born or because the number of thy days is great 22 Hast thou entred into the treasures of the snow or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail 23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble against the day of battel and war 24 By what way is the light parted which scattereth the east-wind upon the earth 25 Who hath divided a water-course for the overflowing of waters or a way for the lightning of thunder 26 To cause it to rain on the earth where no man is on the wilderness wherein there is no man 27 To satisfie the desolate and waste ground and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth 28 Hath the rain a father or who hath begotten the drops of the dew 29 Out of whose womb came the ice and the hoary frost of heaven who hath gendred it 30 The waters are hid as with a stone and the face of the deep †Heb. is taken is frozen 31 Canst thou binde the sweet influences of ‖ Or the seven stars †Heb. XXXIX 1 Of the wilde goats and hindes 5 Of the wilde ass 9 the unicorn 13 the peacock stork and ostrich 19 the horse 26 the hawk 27 the eagle KNowest thou the time when the wilde goats of the rock bring forth or canst thou mark when * Psal 29.9 the hindes do calve 2 Canst thou number the moneths that they fulfil or knowest thou the time when they bring forth 3 They bow themselves they bring forth their young ones they cast out their sorrows 4 Their young ones are in good liking they grow up with corn they go forth and return not unto them 5 Who hath sent out the wilde ass free or who hath loosed the bands of the wilde ass 6 Whose house I have made the wilderness and the †Heb. saâ—â—-places barren land his dwellings 7 He scorneth the multitude of the city neither regardeth he the crying †Hâ—â— of â—â—e exâ—câ—our of the driver 8 The range of the mountains is his pasture and he searcheth after every green thing 9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee or abide by thy crib 10 Canst thou binde the unicorn with his band in the furrow or will he harrow the valleys after thee 11 Wilt thou trust him because his strength is great or wilt thou leave thy labour to him 12 Wilt thou beleeve him that he will bring home thy seed and gather it into thy barn 13 Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks or ‖ Or the feather of the sâ—â—ck and ostrich

CXXXIV An exhortation to bless God ¶ A song of degrees BEhold bless ye the LORD all ye servants of the LORD which b◠night stand in the house of the LORD 2 Lift up your hands ‖ Or in holiness in the sanctuary and bless the LORD 3 The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion PSAL. X. 1 The wo of tyrants 5 Assyria the rod of hypocrites for his pride shall he broken 20. A remnant of Israel shall be saved 24 Israel is comforted with promise of deliverance from Assyria WO unto them that decree unrighteous decrees and ‖ Or to the writers that write grievousness that write grievousness which they have prescribed 2 To turn aside the needy from judgement and to take away the right from the poor of my people that widows may be their prey and that they may rob the father less 3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far to whom will ye flee for help and where will ye leave
strength of his arms yea he is hungry and his strength faileth he drinketh no water and is faint 13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule he marketh it out with a line he fitteth it with planes and he marketh it out with the compass and maketh it after the figure of a man according to the beauty of a man that it may remain in the house 14 He heweth him down cedars and taketh the cypress and the oak which he ‖ Or taketh courage strengthneth for himself among the trees of the forest he planteth an ash and the rain doth nourish it 15 Then shall it be for a man to burn for he will take thereof and warm himself yea he kindleth it and baketh bread yea he maketh a god and worshippeth it he maketh it a graven image and falleth down thereto 16 He burneth part thereof in the fire with part thereof he eateth flesh he rosteth rost and is satisfied yea he warmeth himself and saith Aha I am warm I have seen the fire 17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god even his graven image he falleth down unto it and worshippeth it and prayeth unto it and saith Deliver me for thou art my God 18 They have not known nor understood for he hath †Heb. daubed shut their eyes that they cannot see and their hearts that they cannot understand 19 And none †Heb. setteth to his heart considereth in his heart neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say I have burnt part of it in the fire yea also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof I have rosted flesh and eaten it and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination shall I fall down to †Heb. that which comes of a tree the stock of a tree 20 He feedeth of ashes a deceived heart hath turned him aside that he cannot deliver his soul nor say Is there not a lie in my right hand 21 ¶ Remember these O Jacob and Israel for thou art my servant I have formed thee thou art my servant O Israel thou shalt not be forgotten of me 22 I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions and as a cloud thy sins return unto me for I have redeemed thee 23 Sing O ye heavens for the LORD hath done it shout ye lower parts of the earth break forth into singing ye mountains O forest and every tree therein for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob and glorified himself in Israel 24 Thus saith the LORD thy redeemer and he that formed thee from the womb I am the LORD that maketh all things that stretcheth forth the heavens alone that spreadeth abroad the earth by my self 25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars and maketh diviners mad that turneth wise men backward and maketh their knowledge foolish 26 That confirmeth the word of his servant and performeth the counsel of his messengers that saith to Jerusalem Thou shalt be inhabited and to the cities of Judah Ye shall be built and I will raise up the †Heb. wastes decayed places thereof 27 That saith to the deep Be dry and I will dry up thy rivers 28 That saith of Cyrus He is my shepherd and shall perform all my pleasure even saying to Jerusalem * 2 Chr. 36 22.23 Ezra 1.1 c. understanding or deceit beguile his soul 12 For the bewitching of naughtiness doth obscure things that are honest and the wandring of concupiscence doth †Gr. pervert undermine the simple minde 13 He being made ‖ Or sanctified or consummated perfect in a short time fulfilled a long time 14 For his soul pleased the Lord therefore hasted he to take him away from among the wicked 15 This the people saw and understood it not neither laid they up this in their minds That his grace and mercy is with his saints and that he hath respect unto his chosen 16 Thus the righteous that is dead shall condemn the ungodly which are living and youth that is soon perfected the many years and old age of the unrighteous 17 For they shall see the end of the wise and shall not understand what God in his counsel hath decreed of him and to what end the Lord hath set him in safety 18 They shall see him and despise him but God shall laugh them to scorn and they shall hereafter be a vile carcase and a reproach among the dead for evermore 19 For he shall rend them and cast them down headlong that they shall be speechless and he shall shake them from the foundation and they shall be utterly laid waste and be in sorrow and their memorial shall perish 20 And ‖ Or to the casting up of the account when they cast up the accounts of their sins they shall come with fear and their own iniquities shall convince them to their face CHAP. The praise of the fathers LEt us now praise famous men and our fathers that begat us 2 The Lord hath wrought great glory by them through his great power from the beginning 3 Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms men renowned for their power giving counsel by their understanding and declaring prophesies 4 Leaders of the people by their counsels and by their knowledge of learning meet for the people wise and eloquent in their instructions 5 Such as found out musical tunes and recited ‖ Or ditties verses in writing 6 Rich men furnished with ability living peaceably in their habitations 7 All these were honoured in their generations and were the glory of their times 8 There be of them that have left a name behinde them that their praises might be reported 9 And some there be which have no memorial * Gen. 7.22 who are perished as though they had never been and are become as though they had never been born and their children after them 10 But these were merciful men whose righteousness hath not been forgotten 11 With their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance and their children are within the covenant 12 Their seed stands fast and their children ‖ Or after them for their sakes 13 Their seed shall remain for ever

III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. I. 14 Antiochus gave leave to set up the fashions of the Gentiles in Jerusalem 22 and spoiled it and the temple in it 57 and set up therein the abomination of desolation 63 and slew those that did circumcise their children ANd it hapned after that Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian who came out of the land of ‖ Or Chetbiim Chettiim had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes that he reigned in his stead the first over Greece 2 And made many wars and wan many strong holds and slew the kings of the earth 3 And went through to the ends of the earth and took spoils of many nations insomuch that the earth was quiet before him whereupon ‖ Or his heart was exalted and lifted up he was exalted and his heart was lifted up 4 And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countreys and nations and ‖ Or kingdoms which became c. kings who became tributaries unto him 5 And after these things he fell sick and perceived †Gr. that he dieth that he should die 6 Wherefore he called his servants such as were honourable and had been brought up with him from his youth and parted his kingdom among them while he was yet alive 7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died 8 And his servants bare rule every one in his place 9 And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves so did their sons after them many years and evils were multiplied in the earth 10 And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes son of Antiochus the king who had been an hostage at Rome and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks 11 In those days went there out of Israel wicked men who perswaded many saying Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us for since we departed from them †Gr. many evils have found us we have had much sorrow 12 So this device pleased them well 13 Then certain of the people were so forward herein that they went to the king who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen 14 Whereupon they ‖ Or set up an open school at Jerusalem built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen 15 And made themselves uncircumcised and forsook the holy covenant and joyned themselves to the heathen and were sold to do mischief 16 Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms 17 Wherefore he entred into Egypt with a great multitude with chariots and elephants and hors-men and a great navy 18 And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt but Ptolemee was afraid of him and fled and many were wounded to death 19 Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof 20 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt he returned again in the hundred fourty and third year and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude 21 And entred proudly into the sanctuary and took away the golden altar and the candlestick of light and all the vessels thereof 22 And the table

him 39 And when they were come up out of the water the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip that the eunuch saw him no more and he went on his way rejoycing 40 But Philip was found at Azotus and passing through he preached in all the cities till he came to Cesarea CHAP. IX 1 Saul going towards Damascus 4 is stricken down to the earth 10 is called to the apostleship 18 and is baptized by Ananias 20 He preacheth Christ boldly 23 The Jews lay wait to kill him 29 so do the Grecians but he escapeth both 31 The church having rest Peter healeth Eneas of the palsie 36 and restoreth Tabitha to life ANd Saul yet breathing out threatnings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord went unto the high priest 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues that if he found any of this way whether they were men or women he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem 3 And as he journeyed he came near Damascus and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven 4 And he fell to the earth and heard a voice saying unto him Saul Saul why persecutest thou me 5 And he said Who art thou Lord And the Lord said I am Jesus whom thou persecutest It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks 6 And he trembling and astonished said Lord what wilt thou have me to do And the Lord said unto him Arise and go into the city and it shall be told thee what thou must do 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless hearing a voice but seeing no man 8 And Saul arose from the earth and when his eyes were opened he saw no man but they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus 9 And he was three days without sight and neither did eat nor drink 10 ¶ And there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias and to him said the Lord in a vision Ananias And he said Behold I am here Lord. 11 And the Lord said unto him Arise and go into the street which is called Strait and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus for behold he prayeth 12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him that he might receive his sight 13 Then Ananias answered Lord I have heard by many of this man how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem 14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to binde all that call on thy name 15 But the Lord said unto him Go thy way for he is a chosen vessel unto me to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel 16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my names sake 17 And Ananias went his way and entred into the house and putting his hands on him said Brother Saul the Lord even Jesus that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest hath sent me that thou mightest receive thy sight and be filled with the holy Ghost 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales and he received sight forthwith and arose and was baptized 19 And when he had received meat he was strengthned Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues that he is the Son of God 21 But all that heard him were amazed and said Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem and came hither for that intent that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests 22 But Saul increased the more in strength and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus proving that this is very Christ 23 ¶ And after that many days were fulfilled the Jews took counsel to kill him 24 * 2 Cor. 11.32 But their laying await was known of Saul and they watched the gates day and night to kill him 25 Then the disciples took him by night and let him down by the wall in a basket 26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem he assayed to joyn himself to the disciples but they were all afraid of him and beleeved not that he was a disciple 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way and that he had spoken to him and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus 28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem 29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Grecians but they went about to slay him 30 Which when the brethren knew they brought him down to Cesarea and sent him forth to Tarsus 31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria and were edified and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the holy Ghost were multiplied 32 ¶ And it came to pass as Peter passed throughout all quarters he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda 33 And there he found a certain man named Eneas which had kept his bed eight years and was sick of the palsie 34 And Peter said unto him Eneas Jesus Christ maketh thee whole arise and make thy bed And he arose immediately 35 And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him and turned to the Lord. 36 ¶ Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha which by interpretation is called Dorcas this woman was full of good works and alms-deeds which she did 37 And it came to pass in those days that she was sick and died whom when they had washed they laid her in an upper chamber 38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa and the disciples had heard that Peter was there they sent unto him two men desiring him that he would not ‖ Or be grieved delay to come to them 39 Then Peter arose and went with them When he was come they brought him into the upper chamber and all the widows stood by him weeping and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made while she was with them 40 But Peter put them all forth and kneeled down and prayed and turning him to the body said Tabitha arise And she opened her eyes and when she saw Peter she sat up 41 And he gave her his hand and lift her up and when he had called the saints and widows presented her alive 42 And it was known throughout all Joppa and many beleeved in the Lord. 43 And it came to pass that he tarried many days in Joppa with one Simon a tanner CHAP. X. 1 Cornelius a devout man 5 being commanded by an angel sendeth for Peter 11 who by a vision 15 20 is taught not to despise the Gentiles 34 As he preacheth Christ to Cornelius and his company 44 the holy Ghost falleth on them 48 and they
〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 holy or just things which word the Septuag both in the place of Isa 55.3 and in many others use for that which is in the Hebrew mercies mercies of David 35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm * Psal 16.10 Thou shalt not suffer thine holy one to see corruption 36 For David ‖ Or after he had in his own age served the will of God after he had served his own generation by the will of God * 1 Kings 2.10 fell on sleep and was laid unto his fathers saw corruption 37 But he whom God raised again saw no corruption 38 ¶ Be it known unto you therefore men and brethren that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins 39 And by him all that beleeve are justified from all things from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses 40 Beware therefore left that come upon you which is spoken of in * Hab. 1.5 the prophets 41 Behold ye despisers and wonder and perish for I work a work in your days a work which you shall in no wise beleeve though a man declare it unto you 42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them †Gr. in the week between or in the sabbath between the next sabbath 43 Now when the congrâ—gation was broken up many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas who speaking to them perswaded them to continue in the grace of God 44 ¶ And the next sabbath-day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes they were filled with envy and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul contradicting and blaspheming 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold and said It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you but seeing ye put it from you and judge your selves unworthy of everlasting life lo we turn to the Gentiles 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us saying * Isa 49.6 I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth 48 And when the Gentiles heard this they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord and as many as were ordained to eternal life beleeved 49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women and the chief men of the city and raised perfection against Paul and Barnabas and expeâ—sed them out of their coasts 51 * Matth. 10.14 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them and came unto Iconium 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the holy Ghost CHAP. XIV 1 Paul and Barnabas are persecuted from Iconium 8 At Lystra Paul healeth a creeple whereupon they are reputed as gods 19 Paul is stoned 21 They pass through divers churches confirming the disciples in faith and patience 26 Returning to Antioch they report what God had done with them ANd it came to pass in Iconium that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews and so spake that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks beleeved 2 But the unbeleeving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and made their minds evil-affected against the brethren 3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord which gave testimony unto the word of his grace and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands 4 But the multitude of the city was divided and part held with the Jews and part with the apostles 5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles and also of the Jews with their rulers to use them despitefully to stone them 6 They were ware of it and fled unto Lystra and Derbe cities of Lycaonia and unto the region that lieth round about 7 And there they preached the gospel 8 ¶ And there sat a certain man at Lystra impotent in his feet being a creeple from his mothers womb who never had walked 9 The same heard Paul speak who stedfastly beholding him and perceiving that he had saith to be healed 10 Said with a loud voice Stand up right on thy feet And he leaped and walked 11 And when the people saw what Paul had done they lift up their voices saying in the speech of Lycaonia The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men 12 And they called Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercurius because he was the chief speaker 13 Then the priest of Jupiter which was before their city brought oxen and garlands unto the gates and would have done sacrifice with the people 14 Which when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of they rent their clothes and ran in among the people crying our 15 And saying Sirs why do ye these things We also are men of like passions with you and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God * Gen. 1.1 Psal 146.6 Rev. 14.7 which made heaven and earth and the sea and all things that are therein 16 * Psal 81 12. Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways 17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness in that he did good and gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness 18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people that they had not done sacrifice unto them 19 ¶ And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium who perswaded the people * 2 Cot. 11.23 and having stoned Paul drew him out of the city supposing he had been dead 20 Howbeit as the disciples stood round about him he rose up and came into the city the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and had taught many they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium Antioch 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to continue in the faith and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God 23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church and had prayed with fasting they commended them to the Lord on whom they beleeved 24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia they came to Pamphylia 25 And when they had preached the word in Perga they went down into Attalia 26 And thence sailed to Antioch from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled 27 And when they were come and had gathered the church together they rehearsed all that God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles 28 And there they abode long time with the disciples CHAP. XV. 1 Great dissention ariseth touching circumcision 6 The apostles
offended any thing at all 9 But Festus willing to do the Jews a pleasure answered Paul and said Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem and there be judged of these things before me 10 Then said Paul I stand at Cesars judgement-seat where I ought to be judged to the Jews have I done no wrong as thou very well knowest 11 For if I be an offender or have committed any thing worthy of death I refuse not to die but if there he none of these things whereof these accuse me no man may deliver me unto them I appeal unto Cesar 12 Then Festus when he had conferred with the council answered Hast thou appealed unto Cesar unto Cesar shalt thou go 13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cesarea to salute Festus 14 And when they had been there many days Festus declared Pauls cause unto the king saying There is a certain man lest in bonds by Felix 15 About whom when I was at Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews enformed me desiring to have judgement against him 16 To whom I answered It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face and have license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him 17 Therefore when they were come hither without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgement-seat and I commanded the man to be brought forth 18 Against whom when the accusers stood up they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed 19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition and of one Jesus which was dead whom Paul affirmed to be alive 20 And because ‖ Or I was doubtful how to enquire hereof I doubted of such manner of questions I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem there be judged of these matters 21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the ‖ Or judgement hearing of Augustus I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cesar 22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus I would also hear the man my felt To morrow said he thou shalt hear him 23 And on the morrow when Agrippa was come and Bernice with great pomp and was entred into the place of hearing with the chief captains and principal men of the city at Festus commandment Paul was brought forth 24 And Festus said King Agrippa and all men which are here present with us ye see this man about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me both at Jerusalem and also here crying that he ought not to live any longer 25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus I have determined to send him 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord Wherefore I have brought him forth before you and specially before thee O king Agrippa that after examination had I might have somewhat to write 27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not withal to signifie the crimes laid against him CHAP. XXVI 2 Paul in the presence of Agrippa deelareth his life from his childhood 12 and how miraculously he was converted and called to his apostleship 24 Festus chargeth him to be mad whereunto he answereth modestly 28 Agrippa is almost perswaded to be a Christian 31 The whole company pronounce him innocent THen Agrippa said unto Paul Thou art permitted to speak for thy self Then Paul stretched forth the hand and answered for himself 2 I think my self happy king Agrippa because I shall answer for my self this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently 4 My manner of life from my youth which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem know all the Jews 5 Which knew me from the beginning if they would testifie that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes instantly serving God day and night hope to come for which hopes sake king Agrippa I am accused of the Jews 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you that God should raise the dead 9 I verily thought with my self that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth 10 * Chap. 8.3 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem and many of the saints did I shut up in prison having received authority from the chief priests and when they were put to death I gave my voice against them 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme and being exceedingly mad against them I persecuted them even unto strange cities 12 * Chap 9.2 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests 13 At midday O king I saw in the way a light from heaven above the brightness of the sun shining round about me and them which journeyed with me 14 And when we were all faln to the earth I heard a voice speaking unto me and saying in the Hebrew tongue Saul Saul why persecutest thou me It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks 15 And I said Who art thou Lord And he said I am Jesus whom thou persecutest 16 But rise and stand upon thy feet for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee 17 Delivering thee from the people and from the Gentiles unto whom now I send thee 18 To open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by saith that is in me 19 Whereupon O king Agrippa I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God and do works meet for repentance 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple and went about to kill me 22 Having therefore obtained help of God I continue unto this day witnessing both to small and great saying none other things then those which the prophets and Moses did say should come 23 That Christ should suffer and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead and should shew light unto the people and to the Gentiles 24 And as he thus spake for himself Festus said with a loud
roareth and when he had cried seven thunders uttered their voices 4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices I was about to write and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered and write them not 5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth * Dan. 12.7 lifted up his hand to heaven 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever who created heaven and the things that therein are and the earth and the things that therein are and the sea and the things which are therein that there should be time no longer 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel when he shall begin to sound the mystery of God should be finished as he hath declared to his servants the prophets 8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again and said Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth 9 And I went unto the angel and said unto him Give me the little book And he said unto me * Ezek. 2.8 and 3.3 Take it and eat it up and it shall make thy belly bitter but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey 10 And I took the little book out of the angels hand and ate it up and it was in my mouth sweet as honey and assâ—on as I had eaten it my belly was bitter 11 And he said unto me Thou must prophesie again before many peoples and nations and tongues and kings CHAP. XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that
hour so great riches is come to nought And every ship-master and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning saying What city is like unto this great city 19 And they cast duâ—t on their heads and cried weeping and wailing saying Alas alas that great city wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness for in one hour is she made desolate 20 Rejoyce over her thou heaven and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone and cast it into the sea saying Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all 22 And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee and no craftsman of whatsoever craft he be shall be sound any more in thee and the sound of a milstone shall be heard no more at all in thee 23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee for thy merchants were the great men of the earth for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived 24 And in her was found the bloud of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth CHAP. XIX 1 God is praised in heaven for judging the great whore and avenging the bloud of his saints 7 The marriage of the Lamb. 10 The angel will not be worshipped 17 The fowls called to the great slaughter ANd after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Alleluia Salvation and glory and honour and power unto the Lord our God 2 For true and righteous are his judgements for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth with her sâ—rnication and hath avenged the bloud of his servants at her hand 3 And again they said Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever 4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne saying Amen Alleluia 5 And a voice came out of the throne saying Praise our God all ye his servants and ye that fear him both small and great 6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters and as the voice of mighty thundrings saying Alleluia for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth 7 Let us be glad and rejoyce and give honour to him for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made her self ready 8 And to her was granted that she should be arayed in fine linen clean and white for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints 9 And he saith unto me Write * Mat. 22.2 Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me These are the true sayings of God 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him and he said unto me * Chap. 22 9. See thou do it not I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus worship God for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesie 11 And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true and in righteousness he doth judge and make war 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire and on his head were many crowns and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself 13 * Isa 63.2 And he was clothed with a vesture dipt in bloud and his name is called The Word of God 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses clothed in fine linen white and clean 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword that with it he should smite the nations and he shall rule them with a rod of iron and he treadeth the wine-press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written * Chap. 17.14 KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice saying to all the fowls that flie in the midst of heaven Come and gather your selves together unto the supper of the great God 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of captains and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of them that sit on them and the flesh of all men both free and bond both small and great 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse and against his army 20 And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that worshipped his image These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse which sword proceeded out of his mouth and all the fowls were filled with their flesh CHAP. XX. 2 Satan bound for a thousand years 5 The first resurrection 6 they blessed that have part therein 7 Satan let loose again 8 God and Magog 10 The devil cast into the lake of fire and brimstone 12 The last and general resurrection ANd I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand 2 And he laid hold on the dragon that old serpent which is the devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon him that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled and after that he must be loosed a little season 4 And I saw thrones and they sat upon them and judgement was given unto them and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God and which had not worshipped the beast neither his image neither had received his mark upon their forcheads or in their hands and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished This is the first resurrection 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection on such the second death hath no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years 7 And when the thousand years are expired Satan shall be loosed out of his prison 8
And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth * Ezek. 3â— 2 39.1 Gog and Magog to gather them together to battel the number of whom is as the sand of the sea 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth and compassed the camp of the saints about and the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them 10 And the devil that deceived thâ—m was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever 11 And I saw a great white throne and him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them 12 And I saw the dead small and great stand before God * Dan. 7.10 and the books were opened and another * Chap. 3.5 book was opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and ‖ Or the grave hell delivered up the dead which were in them and they were judged every man according to their works 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire This is the second death 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire CHAP. XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 â—â— And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. â— And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2â— 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. If any man shall add unto these things God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophesie God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the holy city and from the things which are written in this book 20 He which testifieth these things saith Surely I come quickly Amen Even so Come Lord Jesus 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all Amen FINIS
