he_o please_v as_o well_o as_o our_o prayer_n but_o it_o can_v never_o be_v reasonable_a to_o pray_v to_o those_o who_o can_v hear_v we_o and_o if_o prayer_n can_v be_v due_a to_o a_o create_a nature_n in_o its_o most_o exalt_a state_n because_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v present_a in_o all_o place_n to_o hear_v our_o prayer_n then_o if_o it_o be_v a_o proper_a worship_n for_o creature_n it_o must_v be_v so_o by_o a_o positive_a institution_n of_o god_n but_o then_o they_o must_v show_v a_o express_a command_n for_o it_o and_o when_o they_o can_v do_v that_o we_o will_v dispute_v prayer_n thus_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o abraham_n hear_v the_o petition_n of_o dives_n who_o be_v yet_o at_o a_o great_a distance_n even_o in_o hell_n and_o tell_v he_o likewise_o his_o manner_n of_o live_v while_o as_o yet_o on_o earth_n p._n 4._o now_o not_o to_o ask_v how_o he_o come_v so_o exact_o to_o know_v where_o hell_n be_v and_o that_o it_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o heaven_n than_o the_o earth_n be_v if_o there_o be_v any_o force_n in_o this_o argument_n it_o must_v prove_v that_o the_o saint_n have_v a_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o our_o prayer_n though_o at_o so_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o we_o as_o heaven_n be_v that_o they_o see_v and_o hear_v we_o as_o abraham_n do_v dives_n though_o we_o can_v see_v and_o hear_v they_o as_o dives_n do_v abraham_n which_o may_v have_v satisfy_v he_o since_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o reason_n from_o parable_n that_o whatsoever_o distance_n there_o be_v between_o heaven_n and_o hell_n there_o be_v a_o great_a communication_n between_o they_o than_o between_o heaven_n and_o earth_n however_o our_o saviour_n can_v here_o speak_v of_o any_o supernatural_a gift_n whereby_o abraham_n see_v and_o hear_v dives_n in_o hell_n unless_o we_o will_v say_v that_o dives_n do_v by_o a_o supernatural_a gift_n also_o see_v and_o hear_v abraham_n in_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o if_o this_o prove_v any_o thing_n it_o prove_v that_o saint_n know_v and_o hear_v our_o prayer_n by_o their_o own_o natural_a power_n thus_o he_o add_v that_o the_o very_a devil_n hear_v those_o desperate_a wretch_n who_o call_v on_o they_o and_o why_o then_o shall_v he_o doubt_v that_o saint_n want_v this_o privilege_n in_o some_o manner_n grant_v to_o sinful_a man_n and_o wicked_a spirit_n but_o though_o he_o call_v this_o a_o privilege_n i_o suppose_v he_o mean_v a_o natural_a one_o unless_o he_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n hear_v witch_n by_o a_o supernatural_a revelation_n as_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n hear_v the_o prayer_n of_o the_o saint_n on_o earth_n but_o i_o always_o think_v that_o devil_n have_v be_v a_o little_o near_a bad_a man_n than_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n be_v to_o we_o on_o earth_n for_o they_o be_v confine_v to_o this_o low_a region_n and_o therefore_o be_v often_o so_o near_o as_o to_o see_v and_o hear_v bad_a man_n though_o they_o be_v invisible_a themselves_o and_o this_o be_v one_o reason_n why_o god_n will_v not_o allow_v we_o to_o worship_v any_o invisible_a spirit_n because_o though_o we_o shall_v intend_v only_o to_o worship_v good_a spirit_n and_o glorify_a saint_n yet_o bad_a spirit_n who_o be_v near_o and_o present_a as_o have_v their_o residence_n in_o the_o air_n as_o the_o devil_n be_v call_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n do_v assume_v this_o worship_n to_o themselves_o and_o both_o corrupt_a the_o worship_n and_o abuse_v their_o votary_n with_o lie_v wonder_n thus_o they_o do_v in_o the_o time_n of_o paganism_n and_o whether_o they_o have_v more_o reverence_n for_o the_o christian_a saint_n than_o they_o
of_o a_o subject_a for_o himself_o or_o of_o one_o subject_a for_o another_o where_o there_o be_v reason_n and_o equity_n in_o the_o case_n without_o any_o more_o powerful_a intercession_n but_o act_n of_o grace_n and_o favour_n must_v be_v dispense_v by_o the_o intercession_n of_o favourite_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v all_o by_o way_n of_o prayer_n and_o petition_n to_o the_o prince_n but_o though_o it_o be_v all_o but_o petition_n and_o request_n yet_o those_o who_o have_v any_o request_n to_o make_v to_o their_o prince_n place_v more_o confidence_n in_o the_o interest_n and_o power_n of_o one_o favourite_n than_o in_o the_o joint_a petition_n of_o many_o ordinary_a subject_n thus_o it_o be_v here_o christian_n on_o earth_n pray_v for_o each_o other_o as_o common_a supplicant_n and_o the_o benefit_n they_o expect_v from_o such_o prayer_n and_o intercession_n be_v only_o from_o the_o prevalency_n of_o faith_n and_o charity_n which_o inspire_v such_o prayer_n and_o make_v they_o efficacious_a god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o one_o another_o and_o have_v promise_v to_o hear_v our_o unite_a fervent_a and_o importunate_a prayer_n for_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o efficacy_n of_o prayer_n but_o by_o their_o personal_a merit_n and_o interest_n with_o god_n and_o this_o make_v they_o just_o such_o mediator_n as_o christ_n be_v who_o by_o their_o power_n and_o interest_n can_v recommend_v we_o and_o our_o prayer_n to_o god_n acceptance_n no_o you_o will_v say_v christ_n purchase_v we_o with_o his_o blood_n and_o mediate_n in_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n which_o make_v his_o mediation_n of_o a_o different_a nature_n from_o the_o mediation_n of_o saint_n who_o mediate_a only_o by_o their_o interest_n with_o god_n upon_o account_n of_o their_o personal_a merit_n but_o this_o alter_v not_o the_o case_n for_o the_o general_a notion_n of_o a_o mediator_n be_v one_o who_o have_v power_n and_o interest_n with_o god_n effectual_o to_o recommend_v we_o to_o his_o favour_n and_o whether_o he_o mediate_v with_o or_o without_o a_o sacrifice_n if_o his_o mediation_n be_v powerful_a and_o efficacious_a he_o be_v a_o true_a and_o proper_a mediator_n and_o to_o set_v up_o such_o other_o mediator_n beside_o christ_n must_v be_v injurious_a to_o his_o mediation_n for_o then_o christ_n be_v not_o our_o only_a mediator_n and_o after_o all_o the_o apology_n that_o can_v be_v make_v for_o it_o it_o argue_v some_o distrust_n either_o of_o christ_n power_n or_o good_a will_n to_o help_v we_o when_o we_o fly_v to_o other_o patron_n and_o advocate_n 2._o and_o therefore_o mounseur_fw-fr de_fw-fr meaux_n have_v another_o reserve_n for_o in_o the_o second_o place_n he_o tell_v we_o from_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n that_o to_o invocate_v saint_n according_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o council_n be_v to_o have_v recourse_n to_o their_o prayer_n for_o obtain_v benefit_n from_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o in_o reality_n we_o do_v not_o obtain_v those_o benefit_n which_o we_o receive_v by_o the_o intercession_n of_o the_o saint_n otherwise_o than_o through_o jesus_n christ_n and_o in_o his_o name_n see_v these_o saint_n themselves_o pray_v in_o no_o other_o manner_n than_o through_o jesus_n christ_n and_o be_v not_o hear_v but_o in_o his_o name_n after_o which_o we_o can_v imagine_v that_o any_o one_o shall_v accuse_v we_o of_o forsake_v jesus_n christ_n when_o we_o beseech_v his_o member_n who_o be_v also_o we_o his_o child_n who_o be_v our_o brethren_n and_o his_o saint_n who_o be_v our_o first_o fruit_n to_o pray_v with_o we_o and_o for_o we_o to_o our_o common_a master_n in_o the_o name_n of_o our_o common_a mediator_n as_o for_o forsake_v jesus_n christ_n this_o we_o do_v not_o charge_v they_o with_o though_o whoever_o consider_v how_o much_o more_o frequent_a address_n be_v make_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o some_o other_o powerful_a the_o name_n of_o christ_n though_o we_o address_v our_o prayer_n immediate_o to_o god_n yet_o god_n do_v not_o receive_v they_o as_o come_v immediate_o from_o we_o but_o as_o present_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o mediator_n which_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o pray_v to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o offer_v our_o prayer_n to_o god_n not_o direct_o from_o ourselves_o for_o than_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o need_n of_o a_o mediator_n but_o by_o his_o hand_n who_o office_n it_o be_v to_o present_v they_o to_o god_n to_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o which_o be_v therefore_o call_v come_v to_o god_n by_o he_o 25._o now_o this_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o christian_n on_o earth_n who_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o the_o immediate_a throne_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n to_o offer_v their_o prayer_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n who_o appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n supreme_a god_n and_o create_v spirit_n and_o glorified_a soul_n of_o dead_a man_n and_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o distinguish_v between_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o creature_n
