that_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o world_n consist_v in_o the_o conjunction_n of_o these_o two_o the_o 1._o relate_v to_o the_o outward_a man_n be_v the_o holy_a sober_a and_o cheerful_a use_n of_o all_o lawful_a creature_n comfort_n which_o the_o scripture_n comprehend_v under_o the_o name_n of_o our_o daily_a bread_n and_o he_o call_v eat_v and_o drink_v for_o thus_o must_v the_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o commend_v be_v understand_v and_o not_o of_o a_o man_n give_v up_o himself_o to_o the_o excessive_a use_n of_o sensual_a delight_n consider_v that_o solomon_n have_v so_o much_o condemn_v this_o before_o as_o unworthy_a to_o be_v choose_v for_o a_o man_n portion_n and_o that_o the_o same_o be_v altogether_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n the_o 2._o relate_v to_o the_o inner-man_n to_o which_o the_o former_a must_v be_v subservient_fw-fr be_v that_o he_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a which_o must_v be_v understand_v of_o some_o good_a suitable_a and_o satisfactory_a to_o the_o soul_n as_o no_o sensual_a delight_n can_v be_v and_o therefore_o it_o must_v be_v that_o sweet_a fellowship_n which_o reconcile_a soul_n have_v with_o the_o lord_n while_o they_o walk_v in_o his_o fear_n and_o obedience_n which_o he_o press_v in_o the_o close_a of_o this_o book_n and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v intend_v by_o man_n as_o the_o good_a of_o all_o his_o labour_n or_o pain_n he_o take_v in_o this_o world_n the_o end_n of_o his_o eat_v drink_v and_o use_v all_o the_o lawful_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n next_o he_o do_v confim_a that_o this_o good_a consist_v in_o the_o conjunction_n of_o these_o two_o from_o his_o own_o certain_a knowledge_n and_o experience_n he_o see_v viz._n by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n prevent_v the_o evil_n dissuade_v from_o in_o the_o former_a and_o let_v not_o thy_o heart_n be_v hasty_a to_o utter_v any_o thing_n before_o the_o lord_n 4._o we_o can_v but_o speak_v rash_o to_o god_n or_o of_o he_o and_o form_n in_o our_o heart_n thought_n and_o desire_n that_o will_v displease_v he_o unless_o we_o do_v by_o faith_n apprehend_v he_o a_o present_a god_n and_o ourselves_o be_v much_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n who_o have_v most_o filial_a confidence_n towards_o he_o in_o prayer_n that_o the_o same_o may_v be_v qualify_v with_o reverence_n and_o they_o may_v be_v keep_v from_o these_o evil_n present_o dissuade_v from_o for_o to_o this_o end_n it_o be_v say_v for_o god_n be_v in_o heaven_n 6._o our_o own_o natural_a baseness_n and_o weakness_n whereof_o we_o shall_v be_v mind_v by_o the_o place_n of_o our_o residence_n here_o below_o upon_o this_o earth_n under_o the_o view_n of_o the_o lord_n eye_n and_o under_o the_o stroke_n of_o his_o hand_n who_o be_v exalt_v so_o high_a above_o we_o shall_v likewise_o stamp_v our_o heart_n with_o much_o reverence_n to_o he_o and_o make_v we_o who_o be_v but_o earthworm_n creep_v about_o his_o know_v not_o before_o yet_o he_o will_v have_v word_n and_o expression_n use_v in_o prayer_n for_o the_o better_a stay_n of_o our_o heart_n upon_o the_o purpose_n we_o express_v and_o the_o more_o effectual_a move_n of_o our_o affection_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o need_n by_o hear_v ourselves_o make_v our_o moan_n to_o he_o and_o for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o our_o confidence_n by_o hear_v ourselves_o repeat_v to_o he_o the_o ground_n of_o confidence_n to_o be_v hear_v and_o help_v which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o this_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o first_o and_o last_o word_n of_o the_o verse_n be_v not_o rash_a with_o thy_o mouth_n and_o let_v thy_o word_n be_v few_o 8._o although_o it_o be_v sometime_o safe_a yea_o necessary_a to_o continue_v long_o in_o prayer_n and_o speak_v many_o word_n to_o the_o lord_n especial_o when_o our_o own_o or_o the_o church_n strait_n be_v urgent_a and_o our_o strength_n and_o assistance_n great_a luk_n 6.12_o and_o to_o speak_v few_o word_n to_o god_n may_v be_v a_o great_a guilt_n when_o either_o our_o laziness_n or_o unbelief_n restrain_v our_o prayer_n yet_o consider_v how_o prone_a the_o best_a be_v to_o offend_v in_o prayer_n by_o speak_v word_n without_o sense_n or_o affection_n so_o as_o they_o scarce_o hear_v or_o understand_v what_o themselves_o speak_v through_o reason_n of_o security_n darkness_n and_o confusion_n and_o by_o vain_a repetition_n through_o penury_n of_o matter_n and_o rash_a adventure_n upon_o the_o duty_n it_o be_v ordinary_o safe_a in_o a_o few_o word_n from_o faith_n and_o affection_n to_o express_v our_o want_n and_o desire_v to_o god_n according_a to_o this_o direction_n let_v thy_o word_n be_v few_o ver._n 3._o for_o a_o dream_n come_v through_o the_o multitude_n of_o business_n and_o a_o fool_n voice_n be_v know_v by_o multitude_n of_o word_n solomon_n give_v here_o some_o far_a reason_n to_o dissuade_v from_o rash_a and_o inconsiderate_a speak_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o from_o idle_a multiply_v of_o word_n in_o that_o duty_n and_o these_o he_o express_v in_o two_o proverbial_a speech_n or_o similitude_n take_v from_o thing_n common_a among_o man_n the_o application_n whereof_o to_o the_o purpose_n may_v be_v easy_o gather_v from_o what_o go_v immediate_o before_o the_o first_o be_v that_o dream_n come_v from_o the_o multitude_n of_o business_n the_o meaning_n whereof_o according_a to_o the_o scope_n be_v that_o as_o multitude_n of_o distract_n business_n in_o the_o day_n occasion_n many_o confuse_a fancy_n in_o the_o night_n so_o man_n be_v excessive_o take_v up_o with_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o earth_n and_o have_v their_o heart_n which_o shall_v be_v keep_v in_o a_o pray_a frame_n what_o ever_o they_o do_v drown_v in_o worldly_a employment_n they_o must_v needs_o if_o they_o speak_v any_o thing_n to_o god_n speak_v it_o very_o inconcerned_o and_o rash_o see_v they_o take_v no_o leisure_n to_o prepare_v their_o heart_n for_o such_o a_o duty_n so_o that_o this_o first_o similitude_n or_o proverb_n press_v the_o former_a dissuasive_a from_o rash_a and_o inconsiderate_a speak_v to_o god_n by_o discover_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o namely_o man_n distraction_n with_o the_o multiplicity_n of_o worldly_a affair_n and_o so_o consequent_o point_v at_o the_o remedy_n thereof_o the_o second_o be_v that_o a_o fool_n voice_n be_v know_v by_o the_o multitude_n of_o word_n the_o meaning_n whereof_o be_v that_o as_o man_n discover_v their_o want_n of_o prudence_n even_o in_o common_a thing_n by_o their_o much_o speak_n so_o but_o of_o the_o person_n and_o estate_n of_o other_o in_o which_o case_n they_o may_v go_v about_o their_o affair_n relate_v thereto_o with_o a_o good_a conscience_n provide_v the_o same_o be_v do_v earthly_a before_o they_o seek_v any_o other_o happiness_n than_o what_o the_o earth_n can_v afford_v they_o will_v place_v it_o in_o provide_v for_o these_o they_o be_v to_o leave_v behind_o they_o or_o in_o keep_v up_o their_o own_o memory_n among_o man_n after_o themselves_o be_v go_v so_o the_o lord_n have_v wise_o hide_v from_o all_o of_o they_o the_o knowledge_n of_o future_a event_n concern_v these_o thing_n wherein_o they_o may_v observe_v his_o mercy_n towards_o they_o for_o if_o they_o shall_v know_v thing_n to_o go_v well_o after_o they_o and_o better_a than_o in_o their_o and_o love_n of_o bribe_n which_o blind_a man_n judgement_n and_o bias_n their_o affection_n from_o justice_n ver_fw-la 7._o 3._o he_o press_v this_o patient_a and_o constant_a hold_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o difficulty_n and_o danger_n partly_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o issue_n of_o it_o which_o will_v be_v sweet_a though_o the_o beginning_n may_v be_v heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o respect_n to_o god_n command_n man_n have_v no_o power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v it_o 3._o however_o man_n of_o great_a natural_a spirit_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v transport_v with_o the_o desire_n of_o esteem_n for_o magnanimity_n and_o courage_n may_v seem_v to_o defy_v death_n and_o not_o to_o fear_v it_o while_o they_o be_v not_o come_v to_o combat_n with_o it_o yet_o so_o terrible_a be_v it_o to_o all_o that_o have_v not_o make_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o so_o make_v sure_a to_o themselves_o a_o better_a life_n that_o when_o it_o draw_v near_o they_o will_v have_v strong_a desire_n to_o retain_v their_o spirit_n a_o while_n long_o and_o to_o have_v a_o discharge_v from_o the_o combat_n with_o death_n they_o have_v nothing_o to_o comfort_n and_o strengthen_v they_o against_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o second_o death_n which_o be_v at_o the_o back_n of_o the_o first_o for_o this_o be_v speak_v to_o shake_v man_n out_o of_o their_o security_n who_o neglect_v the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o preparation_n for_o death_n no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o discharge_n in_o that_o war._n 4._o it_o be_v the_o great_a misery_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v peremptory_o call_v to_o render_v their_o spirit_n and_o utter_o unwilling_a to_o part_v with_o they_o to_o be_v call_v to_o combat_n with_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n and_o to_o have_v neither_o courage_n nor_o comfort_n in_o enter_v the_o the_o list_n with_o he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o all_o who_o be_v destitut_v of_o save_a wisdom_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v incite_v man_n to_o study_v reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o a_o holy_a walk_n which_o breed_v willingness_n to_o die_v and_o comfort_n in_o death_n for_o as_o a_o proof_n of_o man_n misery_n speak_v of_o before_o this_o be_v bring_v in_o no_o man_n have_v power_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n it_o suppose_v man_n very_o desirous_a to_o retain_v it_o even_o when_o he_o must_v part_v with_o it_o 5._o man_n spirit_n that_o be_v now_o rebellious_a against_o god_n and_o in_o a_o continual_a motion_n contrary_a to_o his_o reveal_v will_n must_v when_o death_n come_v move_v at_o his_o command_n they_o must_v flit_v out_o of_o the_o body_n and_o sist_z themselves_o before_o the_o judge_n to_o be_v at_o his_o disposal_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v deter_v man_n from_o their_o sinful_a course_n for_o no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n 6._o while_o man_n have_v natural_a strength_n and_o vigour_n they_o shall_v spend_v the_o same_o in_o these_o exercise_n the_o remembrance_n whereof_o may_v comfort_v they_o in_o death_n for_o when_o death_n draw_v near_o man_n become_v impotent_a not_o only_o to_o resist_v death_n but_o to_o prepare_v for_o it_o not_o only_o have_v he_o no_o power_n to_o for_o the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n neither_o have_v he_o power_n in_o the_o day_n of_o death_n 7._o as_o every_o man_n will_v have_v a_o sore_a conflict_n and_o a_o hot_a battle_n with_o death_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n with_o never_o so_o much_o power_n or_o policy_n not_o the_o great_a on_o earth_n who_o can_v have_v a_o discharge_v or_o exemption_n from_o engage_v in_o the_o combat_n with_o it_o therefore_o man_n have_v need_v to_o get_v the_o breast_n plate_n of_o faith_n and_o for_o a_o helmet_n the_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o to_o study_v a_o wise_a carriage_n in_o a_o evil_a world_n especial_o when_o they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o wicked_a man_n in_o power_n and_o authority_n lest_o by_o their_o miscarriage_n they_o engage_v themselves_o needless_o in_o that_o war_n for_o there_o be_v no_o discharge_n in_o that_o war._n 8._o mortal_a man_n can_v hardly_o be_v bring_v to_o have_v serious_a thought_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o death_n and_o the_o impossibility_n of_o shift_v the_o combat_n with_o it_o they_o live_v as_o if_o they_o can_v retain_v their_o spirit_n for_o ever_o and_o forget_v to_o take_v their_o armour_n to_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v never_o to_o fight_v with_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n therefore_o the_o necessity_n of_o it_o and_o impossibility_n of_o escape_v it_o be_v here_o set_v forth_o by_o so_o many_o expression_n no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n no_o man_n have_v power_n in_o the_o day_n of_o death_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o discharge_v in_o that_o war._n 9_o when_o wicked_a man_n have_v have_v success_n in_o their_o sinful_a course_n so_o far_o as_o by_o they_o to_o escape_v temporal_a hazard_n for_o a_o time_n they_o do_v they_o go_v on_o as_o confident_o in_o they_o as_o if_o they_o will_v always_o deliver_v they_o as_o be_v import_v in_o this_o threaten_n which_o contradict_v man_n ordinary_a apprehension_n neither_o shall_v wickedness_n deliver_v those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o 10._o whatever_o be_v man_n apprehension_n of_o safety_n by_o their_o sinful_a course_n they_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o deliver_v they_o at_o last_o that_o they_o shall_v bring_v total_a and_o terrible_a destruction_n upon_o they_o for_o such_o spare_a expression_n in_o scripture_n speak_v against_o wicked_a man_n import_n much_o more_o than_o be_v express_v even_o the_o contrary_a affirmative_a in_o the_o superlative_a degree_n neither_o shall_v wickedness_n deliver_v those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o import_v no_o less_o than_o that_o it_o shall_v bring_v utter_a destruction_n from_o which_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o escape_n to_o all_o eternity_n 11._o however_o all_o unregenerat_a man_n rise_v not_o to_o a_o like_a must_v also_o have_v a_o heart_n to_o give_v out_o a_o part_n thereof_o to_o other_o in_o necessity_n for_o solomon_n have_v frequent_o press_v the_o former_a in_o order_n to_o man_n happiness_n he_o come_v here_o to_o press_v the_o latter_a in_o order_n to_o the_o same_o end_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o refer_v this_o to_o his_o general_a scope_n which_o be_v to_o direct_v miserable_a man_n in_o the_o right_a way_n to_o his_o true_a felicity_n cast_v thy_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n 2._o though_o the_o lord_n people_n have_v the_o only_a true_a riches_n consist_v in_o knowledge_n wisdom_n and_o the_o like_a yet_o the_o lord_n see_v it_o fit_a that_o many_o of_o they_o be_v very_o poor_a as_o to_o the_o world_n and_o destitute_a of_o outward_a enjoyment_n not_o have_v so_o much_o of_o their_o own_o often_o time_n as_o bread_n to_o eat_v or_o raiment_n to_o put_v on_o that_o he_o may_v try_v other_o charity_n and_o respect_n to_o his_o command_n the_o faith_n and_o patience_n of_o his_o own_o and_o may_v evidence_n that_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v not_o his_o best_a gift_n for_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o this_o exhortation_n that_o there_o will_v be_v many_o very_a poor_a among_o his_o dear_a people_n who_o supply_n he_o main_o call_v for_o here_o and_o promise_n large_o to_o reward_n while_o he_o say_v cast_v thy_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n and_o give_v a_o portion_n to_o seven_o and_o also_o to_o eight_o 3._o the_o lord_n do_v not_o make_v all_o his_o people_n alike_o poor_a at_o once_o in_o thing_n worldly_a but_o while_o some_o want_n bread_n and_o other_o necessary_n comprehend_v under_o it_o there_o be_v other_o who_o have_v the_o same_o and_o may_v spare_v some_o of_o it_o for_o the_o supply_n of_o other_o as_o be_v likeways_o suppose_a in_o this_o exhortation_n cast_v thy_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n 4._o though_o humane_a law_n do_v not_o ordinary_o enjoin_v charity_n and_o so_o do_v not_o punish_v for_o neglect_v of_o it_o yet_o god_n holy_a law_n do_v such_o be_v his_o respect_n to_o his_o poor_a that_o he_o plead_v for_o they_o with_o the_o rich_a and_o consequent_o will_v plead_v in_o displeasure_n against_o the_o rich_a the_o several_a part_n of_o the_o body_n all_o which_o at_o death_n will_v be_v loose_v and_o break_v to_o piece_n and_o though_o this_o general_a sense_n may_v be_v satisfactory_a and_o useful_a as_o to_o the_o scope_n which_o be_v to_o stir_v up_o man_n to_o remember_v their_o creator_n before_o these_o noble_a part_n be_v decay_v and_o it_o may_v be_v think_v safe_a to_o inquire_v no_o far_o anent_o the_o particular_n intend_v by_o every_o part_n of_o the_o similitude_n consider_v that_o it_o seem_v now_o to_o be_v very_o uncertain_a by_o what_o name_n these_o noble_a part_n of_o the_o body_n the_o heart_n brain_n liver_n and_o the_o like_a be_v call_v and_o distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o among_o the_o hebrew_n in_o solomon_n time_n and_o by_o what_o similitude_n they_o be_v set_v out_o which_o make_v great_a diversity_n among_o interpreter_n in_o expound_v and_o apply_v of_o they_o and_o consider_v also_o that_o there_o be_v several_a of_o these_o part_n which_o may_v be_v represent_v by_o diverse_a part_n of_o this_o similitude_n yet_o we_o shall_v mention_v what_o be_v most_o universal_o agree_v upon_o to_o be_v point_v at_o by_o the_o particular_n of_o the_o allegory_n here_o make_v use_n of_o and_o first_o by_o the_o silver_n cord_n be_v mean_v the_o marrow_n of_o the_o backbone_n compare_v to_o a_o silver_n cord_n because_o much_o of_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o body_n lie_v in_o it_o in_o so_o much_o as_o without_o it_o man_n will_v creep_v upon_o the_o earth_n as_o worm_n do_v and_o because_o in_o colour_n it_o resemble_v a_o silver_n cord_n some_o of_o the_o prime_a artery_n or_o string_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o thence_o convey_v the_o vital_a spirit_n to_o the_o liver_n and_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n second_o the_o golden_a bowl_n be_v take_v from_o that_o yellow_a thin_a skin_n contain_v the_o brain_n within_o the_o skull_n which_o be_v break_v when_o the_o pore_n of_o it_o be_v much_o open_v to_o let_v in_o the_o air_n as_o fall_v out_o near_o the_o time_n of_o death_n three_o the_o pitcher_n at_o the_o fountain_n be_v think_v to_o point_n out_o a_o great_a hollow_a vein_n somewhat_o in_o form_n or_o figure_n like_o be_v spend_v upon_o his_o lust_n he_o shall_v beware_v of_o fill_v this_o golden_a bowl_n his_o brain_n wherein_o these_o excellent_a faculty_n his_o imagination_n and_o memory_n have_v their_o prime_a residence_n with_o unclean_a ambitious_a revengeful_a speculation_n and_o such_o like_a immorality_n and_o by_o intemperance_n and_o excess_n to_o spoil_v this_o pitcher_n corrupt_v this_o cistren_n and_o break_v this_o wheel_n his_o liver_n lung_n and_o other_o part_n which_o may_v be_v signify_v by_o these_o similitude_n and_o so_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o be_v his_o own_o destroyer_n therefore_o be_v these_o part_n of_o the_o body_n set_v out_o here_o by_o such_o elegant_a metaphor_n or_o similitude_n borrow_v from_o very_o precious_a thing_n the_o silver_n cord_n the_o golden_a bowl_n etc._n etc._n 4._o these_o part_n of_o the_o body_n which_o be_v most_o excellent_a and_o durable_a be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o very_o brittle_a and_o fade_v and_o therefore_o a_o house_n not_o make_v with_o hand_n to_o be_v insure_v and_o this_o frail_a body_n only_o so_o far_o respect_v and_o care_v for_o as_o it_o may_v be_v the_o more_o instrumental_a in_o do_v the_o lord_n service_n while_o we_o have_v it_o therefore_o be_v the_o most_o noble_a part_n of_o the_o body_n here_o represent_v by_o a_o golden_a bowl_n a_o pitcher_n and_o a_o wheel_n 5._o while_o man_n have_v some_o measure_n of_o health_n and_o strength_n they_o shall_v consider_v that_o it_o will_v be_v no_o fit_a time_n for_o make_v their_o peace_n and_o acquaintance_n with_o god_n in_o christ_n when_o death_n shall_v be_v lose_v the_o last_o pinn_v of_o their_o tabernacle_n these_o power_n and_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v main_o active_a in_o know_v believe_a love_a and_o praise_v the_o lord_n be_v then_o a_o decay_a and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v think_v it_o their_o true_a wisdom_n timous_o to_o remember_v their_o creator_n in_o the_o day_n of_o
