know_v nor_o all_o the_o man_n in_o world_n when_o i_o retire_v myself_o any_o day_n and_o shut_v myself_o up_o in_o my_o chamber_n whether_o i_o pray_v or_o meditate_v or_o perform_v any_o other_o solitary_a worship_n to_o god_n or_o not_o unless_o i_o tell_v they_o afterward_o or_o speak_v so_o loud_o as_o that_o they_o overhear_v i_o which_o i_o be_o not_o bind_v to_o do_v or_o rather_o be_o bind_v not_o to_o do_v it_o be_v altogether_o vain_a to_o say_v no_o more_o to_o determine_v and_o command_v that_o which_o no_o account_n can_v be_v take_v of_o by_o those_o that_o command_v it_o or_o by_o any_o man_n else_o whether_o it_o be_v obey_v or_o not_o 2._o but_o further_a secret_a duty_n and_o so_o time_n to_o be_v necessary_o employ_v in_o they_o be_v immediate_o duty_n of_o conscience_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a that_o can_v be_v now_o no_o authority_n of_o man_n of_o the_o church_n or_o any_o other_o reach_v immediate_o to_o the_o conscience_n and_o determination_n of_o the_o great_a importance_n to_o the_o main_a business_n of_o religion_n god_n honour_n and_o the_o good_a of_o man_n soul_n as_o take_v in_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o two_o substantial_a respect_n of_o time_n the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n join_v and_o according_o the_o proportion_n of_o time_n therein_o determine_v be_v the_o chief_a time_n for_o religion_n of_o all_o other_o therefore_o concern_v this_o time_n or_o this_o determination_n it_o be_v a_o consideration_n of_o the_o great_a weight_n by_o what_o rule_n it_o may_v be_v order_v wise_o and_o make_v in_o a_o convenient_a and_o just_a and_o profitable_a proportion_n or_o observe_v to_o be_v so_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o any_o already_o make_v as_o namely_o of_o that_o of_o one_o day_n continuance_n in_o the_o revolution_n of_o seven_o which_o we_o say_v be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o four_o commandment_n now_o here_o there_o may_v be_v a_o double_a consideration_n of_o the_o wisdom_n and_o conveniency_n of_o the_o proportion_n of_o time_n so_o determine_v between_o the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n joint_o one_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o total_a proportion_n determine_v for_o religion_n and_o so_o seclude_v from_o worldly_a business_n how_o so_o much_o in_o the_o whole_a as_o for_o instance_n the_o proportion_n of_o a_o day_n in_o seven_o or_o the_o seven_o part_n of_o time_n in_o the_o revolution_n of_o seven_o day_n whether_o that_o be_v a_o wise_a and_o convenient_a and_o profitable_a determination_n and_o not_o certain_o too_o much_o or_o certain_o too_o little_a for_o the_o chief_a time_n for_o religion_n and_o by_o what_o rule_v to_o judge_v it_o either_o way_n but_o this_o we_o leave_v the_o discussion_n of_o to_o a_o follow_a chapter_n where_o we_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o beat_v it_o out_o clear_o and_o at_o large_a the_o other_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o divide_v and_o share_v such_o a_o proportion_n as_o a_o day_n come_v to_o in_o seven_o authority_n 3._o also_o if_o any_o want_n authority_n to_o secure_v themselves_o in_o the_o time_n determine_v or_o to_o awe_v unwilling_a inferior_n as_o also_o to_o awe_v and_o satisfy_v their_o mind_n somewhat_o by_o the_o clear_a equity_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o proportion_n determine_v and_o distribute_v between_o the_o continuance_n &_o frequency_n the_o determination_n in_o all_o probability_n can_v be_v profitable_o even_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v wise_o determine_v for_o it_o will_v never_o be_v constant_o observe_v by_o any_o who_o it_o be_v make_v for_o if_o inferior_n make_v it_o to_o themselves_o they_o will_v be_v oft_o take_v off_o by_o the_o command_n of_o untoward_a superior_n and_o they_o will_v not_o know_v what_o to_o do_v because_o they_o be_v not_o master_n of_o their_o own_o time_n again_o it_o be_v certain_a before_o hand_n that_o all_o unwilling_a inferior_n will_v despise_v it_o and_o neither_o observe_v it_o themselves_o nor_o suffer_v other_o that_o they_o have_v under_o they_o to_o observe_v it_o if_o they_o stand_v in_o no_o awe_n of_o the_o authority_n command_v and_o such_o a_o thing_n foresee_v conclude_v any_o determination_n or_o law_n to_o be_v so_o far_o forth_o altogether_o unprofitable_a likewise_o what_o ever_o wisdom_n or_o worldly_a authority_n such_o shall_v have_v as_o make_v that_o determination_n if_o they_o make_v it_o not_o with_o such_o clear_a evidence_n of_o equity_n and_o reason_n on_o both_o side_n that_o so_o much_o and_o so_o often_o be_v necessary_a and_o no_o less_o nor_o no_o seldomer_n and_o again_o that_o so_o much_o and_o so_o often_o be_v ordinary_o sufficient_a for_o the_o chief_a solemn_a time_n and_o no_o more_o at_o once_o nor_o no_o often_o be_v requisite_a the_o unwilling_a will_v be_v sure_a not_o to_o regard_v the_o determination_n when_o they_o be_v out_o of_o sight_n and_o hear_n as_o not_o hold_v themselves_o bind_v to_o so_o much_o or_o so_o often_o and_o so_o it_o will_v be_v still_o unprofitable_a in_o reference_n to_o such_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o conscientious_a will_v be_v doubtful_a whether_o so_o much_o and_o so_o often_o be_v ordinary_o sufficient_a for_o the_o chief_a solemn_a time_n and_o so_o neither_o will_v attain_v a_o sufficient_a profitablenesse_n to_o they_o 4._o most_o of_o all_o such_o a_o determination_n in_o all_o probability_n these_o xxxviii_o 4._o or_o all_o these_o will_v not_o be_v profitable_a if_o make_v by_o such_o in_o who_o there_o be_v a_o want_n in_o all_o these_o respect_n of_o wisdom_n willingness_n and_o authority_n sufficient_a for_o such_o a_o determination_n of_o such_o consequence_n and_o importance_n as_o this_o be_v of_o and_o now_o whether_o any_o man_n or_o number_n of_o man_n even_o within_o the_o church_n may_v not_o be_v find_v want_v in_o some_o or_o all_o of_o these_o requisite_n to_o make_v such_o a_o conclusive_a determination_n of_o the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n of_o time_n joint_o to_o make_v up_o the_o ordinary_o sufficient_a and_o necessary_a chief_a solemn_a time_n for_o all_o man_n as_o we_o shall_v discourse_v in_o profitable_a which_o be_v make_v conclusive_o in_o both_o the_o respect_n of_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n joint_o by_o such_o who_o wisdom_n affection_n to_o religion_n and_o authority_n be_v every_o way_n undoubted_a for_o hereby_o all_o scruple_n and_o pretence_n of_o scruple_n will_v be_v take_v away_o about_o the_o necessity_n and_o sufficiency_n of_o this_o time_n so_o determine_v for_o the_o ordinary_a chief_a solemn_a time_n for_o religion_n and_o the_o unwilling_a will_v be_v as_o much_o awe_v as_o by_o any_o other_o law_n whatsoever_o and_o the_o willing_a have_v a_o full_a and_o free_a liberty_n to_o attend_v it_o reject_v all_o unnecessary_a interruption_n from_o whosoever_o now_o all_o this_o be_v unquestionable_o true_a of_o god_n who_o do_v determine_v in_o this_o sort_n conclusive_o the_o continuance_n to_o be_v a_o whole_a day_n and_o the_o frequency_n joint_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v one_o in_o seven_o in_o the_o four_o commandment_n undeniable_o to_o the_o jew_n as_o the_o necessary_a and_o ordinary_o sufficient_a chief_a solemn_a time_n of_o worship_n therefore_o also_o we_o can_v think_v no_o otherwise_o but_o that_o this_o commandment_n in_o this_o regard_n be_v a_o substantially-profitable_a commandment_n for_o all_o man_n in_o all_o age_n to_o be_v bind_v unto_o and_o because_o we_o find_v not_o any_o certain_a repeal_v of_o it_o afterward_o manner_n of_o determination_n the_o next_o be_v affection_n xi_o a_o remiss_a determination_n be_v profitable_a for_o trial_n of_o affection_n 5._o a_o remiss_a determination_n namely_o of_o the_o continuance_n or_o frequency_n of_o time_n for_o religion_n may_v also_o be_v profitable_a partly_o to_o recommend_v the_o importance_n of_o religion_n to_o be_v attend_v as_o a_o chief_a business_n and_o particular_o in_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n which_o be_v name_v as_o be_v of_o chief_a importance_n to_o religion_n and_o partly_o withal_o to_o intimate_v a_o mind_n in_o the_o superior_a that_o make_v it_o to_o try_v the_o affection_n of_o inferior_n to_o the_o business_n of_o religion_n general_o or_o any_o particular_a business_n of_o religion_n which_o such_o determination_n may_v particular_o concern_v by_o intimate_v somewhat_o general_o about_o the_o proportion_n of_o time_n for_o it_o but_o refer_v the_o speciality_n of_o it_o to_o their_o mind_n as_o we_o thus_o find_v god_n make_v a_o remiss_a determination_n of_o the_o continuance_n for_o prayer_n col._n 4._o continue_v in_fw-la prayer_n which_o imply_v some_o convenient_a proportion_n of_o continuance_n to_o be_v ordinary_o allot_v to_o it_o but_o leave_v the_o specialty_n of_o it_o to_o man_n own_o affection_n which_o according_o be_v exceed_o try_v by_o such_o continuance_n voluntary_o prolong_v they_o who_o affection_n be_v strong_a to_o the_o duty_n and_o the_o business_n of_o the_o duty_n converse_v with_o god_n and_o wrestle_v with_o he_o for_o all_o manner_n of_o blessing_n do_v undoubted_o continue_v long_o and_o those_o who_o affection_n be_v weak_a do_v continue_v less_o while_n understanding_n this_o of_o the_o right_n pray_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o not_o the_o lip-labour_n of_o the_o tongue_n or_o the_o outward_a continuance_n upon_o one_o knee_n suppose_v even_o in_o secret_n where_o the_o mind_n be_v distract_v by_o many_o fancy_n for_o so_o a_o man_n may_v continue_v a_o long_a while_n about_o the_o duty_n and_o yet_o continue_v but_o a_o little_a while_n in_o the_o duty_n pray_v but_o a_o little_a while_n for_o want_v of_o godly_a at_o least_o as_o oft_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n 1._o cor._n 11.25_o 26._o where_o the_o two_o former_a for_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n imply_v a_o very_a often_o reiteration_n yet_o not_o prescribe_v exact_o the_o number_n how_o often_o and_o the_o other_o for_o the_o lord_n supper_n intimate_v some_o frequency_n yet_o not_o determine_v special_o so_o or_o so_o often_o so_o in_o each_o leave_v the_o specialty_n to_o man_n affection_n and_o occasion_n and_o no_o man_n can_v deny_v but_o here_o also_o
day_n as_o their_o natural_a spirit_n can_v hold_v out_o unto_o as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o continue_v wake_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o it_o do_v not_o bind_v all_o then_o equal_o to_o the_o same_o proportion_n of_o minute_n because_o all_o be_v not_o able_a to_o wake_v equal_o one_o as_o long_o as_o a_o other_o but_o so_o far_o as_o man_n be_v able_a it_o bind_v all_o equal_o all_o be_v bind_v to_o serve_v god_n in_o the_o day_n with_o all_o their_o strength_n the_o strength_n of_o all_o their_o natural_a ability_n and_o so_o much_o we_o shall_v present_o see_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v every_o one_o of_o mankind_n and_o more_o than_o so_o much_o it_o do_v not_o command_v whether_o the_o continuance_n be_v long_o or_o short_a compare_v with_o other_o 2._o xxiv_o answ_n 2._o 2._o but_o with_o all_o we_o say_v if_o any_o one_o of_o mankind_n through_o neglect_n of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n or_o misse-devotion_n to_o it_o do_v willing_o sleep_v more_o and_o wake_v less_o time_n than_o he_o need_v to_o do_v whether_o again_o the_o continuance_n compare_v with_o other_o man_n be_v long_o or_o short_a he_o be_v and_o will_v be_v find_v a_o transgressor_n against_o this_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o this_o be_v but_o corruption_n in_o he_o though_o perhaps_o he_o may_v pretend_v natural_a infirmity_n but_o of_o that_o and_o all_o other_o such_o like_a pretence_n this_o rule_n in_o a_o word_n may_v be_v a_o certain_a and_o sufficient_a judge_n that_o what_o continuance_n soever_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o wake_v in_o a_o day_n about_o any_o worldly_a business_n or_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n game_a or_o the_o like_a he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o according_a to_o nature_n the_o same_o continuance_n of_o time_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o one_o or_o other_o exercise_n of_o religion_n which_o natural_o weary_a not_o the_o spirit_n more_o than_o worldly_a matter_n but_o rather_o less_o than_o many_o worldly_a matter_n and_o the_o variety_n may_v refresh_v and_o do_v great_o the_o mind_n so_o far_o as_o carnality_n and_o corruption_n oversway_v not_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o state_v of_o this_o position_n concern_v a_o day_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n we_o distinguish_v natural_a ability_n from_o corruption_n for_o we_o take_v it_o for_o a_o most_o undeniable_a truth_n that_o corruption_n do_v not_o hinder_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o command_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o natural_a ability_n as_o long_o at_o least_o as_o it_o exceed_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o yield_v god_n so_o much_o love_n and_o service_n this_o also_o make_v be_v make_v good_a in_o manifold_a particular_a instance_n that_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n do_v command_v we_o to_o do_v thing_n which_o now_o according_a to_o our_o corruption_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o do_v as_o to_o pray_v or_o read_v or_o hear_v the_o word_n when_o ever_o he_o do_v any_o of_o these_o duty_n with_o a_o steady_a fix_a heart_n and_o mind_n without_o any_o distraction_n or_o worldly_a thought_n at_o all_o that_o while_n for_o that_o they_o be_v so_o far_o forth_o for_o religion_n be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o ground_n and_o principle_n in_o nature_n which_o we_o have_v former_o make_v use_v of_o if_o it_o be_v sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n never_o in_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o then_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n determine_v to_o every_o man_n a_o whole_a day_n continuance_n once_o at_o least_o in_o his_o life_n but_o it_o be_v sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n never_o to_o god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o ergo_fw-la the_o consequence_n be_v undeniable_a the_o antecedent_n be_v thus_o further_o make_v good_a that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n be_v the_o lord_n of_o we_o and_o all_o our_o time_n and_o god_n be_v our_o happiness_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n but_o never_o in_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o be_v contrary_a to_o those_o acknowledgement_n he_o so_o unless_o all_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o day_n be_v tender_v to_o god_n he_o have_v not_o all_o that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o as_o lord_n of_o all_o our_o time_n also_o where_o a_o man_n acknowledge_v his_o whole_a happiness_n to_o lie_v that_o can_v but_o carry_v he_o with_o the_o whole_a of_o his_o strength_n to_o the_o utmost_a continuance_n nature_n have_v to_o give_v for_o all_o that_o a_o man_n do_v be_v towards_o his_o happiness_n and_o nothing_o can_v draw_v his_o mind_n from_o it_o while_o his_o acknowledgement_n of_o it_o fail_v not_o now_o we_o have_v already_o show_v that_o nature_n can_v and_o do_v determine_v such_o a_o day_n to_o every_o man_n for_o business_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o and_o that_o it_o can_v give_v it_o whole_o to_o god_n employ_v it_o whole_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n take_v in_o special_o the_o reservation_n of_o any_o necessary_a refresh_n which_o nature_n and_o not_o corruption_n call_v for_o god_n allow_v and_o any_o extraordinary_a other_o necessary_a interruption_n as_o we_o have_v former_o say_v therefore_o never_o throughout_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n that_o which_o nature_n be_v so_o able_a to_o give_v he_o be_v against_o those_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n sovereignty_n and_o his_o be_v our_o happiness_n and_o so_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n answer_v xxvi_o a_o objection_n answer_v if_o here_o it_o be_v object_v that_o the_o same_o argument_n will_v as_o well_o prove_v the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n of_o our_o life_n as_o of_o one_o day_n which_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o do_v nor_o can_v because_o our_o natural_a necessity_n allow_v by_o god_n and_o even_o command_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n as_o it_o concern_v the_o second_o table_n duty_n admit_v it_o not_o and_o therefore_o the_o argument_n be_v either_o false_a or_o impertinent_a or_o both_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o objection_n furnish_v we_o with_o sufficient_a justification_n of_o the_o argument_n both_o truth_n and_o pertinencie_n for_o we_o grant_v according_a to_o the_o objection_n that_o god_n in_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v to_o attend_v necessary_a worldly_a business_n as_o well_o we_o say_v not_o as_o much_o that_o be_v as_o absolute_o necessary_o as_o his_o service_n and_o the_o pursue_v immediate_o of_o the_o soul_n happiness_n in_o and_o by_o they_o therefore_o in_o sensu_fw-la composito_fw-la it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o the_o argument_n prove_v the_o whole_a of_o every_o day_n continuance_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o religion_n and_o god_n immediate_a worship_n although_o in_o sensu_fw-la diviso_fw-la it_o prove_v of_o every_o particular_a day_n that_o be_v this_o or_o that_o quando_fw-la as_o well_o as_o of_o one_o but_o we_o propound_v it_o not_o of_o any_o particular_a day_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o quando_fw-la or_o season_n this_o or_o that_o day_n but_o only_o of_o the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n one_o after_o another_o that_o be_v the_o quoties_fw-la or_o revolution_n join_v to_o the_o continuance_n which_o we_o meddle_v not_o with_o in_o the_o argument_n yet_o they_o will_v certain_o admit_v one_o day_n in_o a_o man_n life_n we_o mean_v ordinary_a business_n will_v and_o for_o extraordinary_a necessity_n we_o grant_v as_o before_o reservation_n for_o they_o if_o they_o shall_v fall_v out_o when_o a_o man_n be_v upon_o that_o one_o day_n devotion_n therefore_o

business_n i_o may_v certain_o spare_v for_o religion_n so_o many_o day_n of_o a_o year_n or_o of_o a_o month_n or_o week_n or_o so_o many_o hour_n of_o a_o week_n or_o day_n because_o i_o shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o do_v about_o worldly_a affair_n but_o may_v be_v free_a to_o attend_v on_o god_n we_o say_v this_o can_v never_o be_v say_v in_o reference_n to_o all_o mankind_n of_o who_o our_o dispute_n now_o be_v and_o so_o we_o shall_v have_v most_o wild_a determination_n if_o man_n take_v their_o aim_n only_o or_o chief_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o bodily_a and_o worldly_a
