more_o settle_v and_o compose_v as_o in_o the_o still_o small_a voice_n we_o read_v of_o 1_o king_n 19.11_o 12._o though_o they_o do_v not_o flame_n consume_v and_o break_v down_o so_o much_o as_o those_o more_o violent_a affection_n do_v indeed_o in_o our_o last_o war_n by_o miserable_o destroy_v both_o church_n and_o state_n and_o of_o such_o we_o may_v say_v that_o god_n be_v not_o in_o they_o i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o our_o affection_n ought_v to_o be_v sometime_o fervent_a and_o vehement_a but_o so_o as_o they_o subvert_v not_o but_o be_v regulate_v by_o our_o judgement_n and_o when_o the_o height_n of_o they_o depend_v on_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o god_n majesty_n and_o our_o own_o misery_n by_o nature_n and_o not_o kindle_v by_o the_o loudness_n of_o a_o enthusiastic_a voice_n or_o tone_n three_o hence_o also_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o the_o whole_a ease_n be_v clear_o mistake_v for_o prayer_n be_v by_o its_o essential_a definition_n a_o representation_n or_o a_o religious_a representation_n of_o our_o will_n and_o desire_n to_o god_n and_o then_o certain_o if_o it_o be_v a_o representation_n of_o our_o will_n to_o god_n we_o must_v have_v some_o desire_n in_o our_o will_n to_o represent_v to_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o therefore_o every_o one_o that_o pray_v shall_v either_o pray_v to_o god_n by_o put_v up_o his_o own_o petition_n by_o himself_o or_o shall_v be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o matter_n beforehand_o which_o another_o put_v up_o for_o he_o that_o he_o may_v say_v he_o represent_v his_o own_o will_n to_o god_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v conformable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o have_v be_v the_o custom_n when_o any_o one_o be_v to_o be_v particular_o pray_v for_o not_o only_o the_o minister_n be_v acquaint_v with_o his_o desire_n but_o he_o also_o give_v notice_n to_o the_o people_n of_o the_o same_o prayer_n be_v the_o action_n of_o the_o church_n not_o the_o declaration_n of_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n to_o we_o but_o the_o representation_n of_o we_o to_o he_o and_o therefore_o do_v suppose_v our_o affection_n already_o engage_v there_o be_v none_o who_o need_v excite_v a_o beggar_n affection_n who_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o want_n these_o will_v make_v he_o pathetical_a and_o therefore_o all_o the_o composition_n in_o our_o prayer_n shall_v be_v rather_o to_o express_v and_o not_o to_o incite_v our_o affection_n so_o much_o because_o we_o come_v to_o put_v up_o our_o desire_n to_o god_n i_o confess_v that_o in_o preach_v the_o case_n be_v quite_o otherwise_o and_o a_o great_a latitude_n may_v be_v allow_v as_o to_o these_o thing_n because_o it_o be_v ordain_v not_o only_o for_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n but_o conversion_n of_o unbeliever_n who_o may_v be_v draw_v by_o the_o love_n of_o the_o expression_n to_o the_o love_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o and_o herein_o every_o one_o that_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o gift_n may_v exercise_v his_o rhetoric_n and_o not_o bury_v his_o talon_n in_o a_o napkin_n and_o likewise_o because_o hereby_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v declare_v to_o we_o spiritual_a thing_n by_o sensible_a representation_n may_v become_v familiar_a to_o we_o and_o make_v the_o better_a impression_n upon_o we_o yet_o the_o apostle_n use_v all_o plainness_n of_o speech_n in_o preach_v and_o therefore_o certain_o likewise_o in_o pray_v the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o rom._n 8.26_o likewise_o the_o spirit_n also_o help_v our_o infirmity_n for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o with_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v where_o i_o suppose_v the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o the_o person_n of_o weak_a christian_n or_o new_a convert_v who_o can_v not_o well_o express_v their_o mind_n to_o god_n but_o yet_o they_o know_v in_o general_a what_o be_v to_o be_v pray_v for_o though_o they_o can_v not_o particular_o express_v themselves_o for_o we_o know_v not_o etc._n etc._n which_o do_v suppose_v that_o they_o know_v however_o in_o general_a though_o not_o in_o particular_a beforehand_o what_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o and_o therefore_o to_o the_o due_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n there_o be_v requisite_a in_o the_o first_o place_n a_o scala_fw-la descensoria_fw-la from_o the_o superior_a faculty_n to_o the_o inferior_a and_o not_o a_o scala_fw-la ascensoria_fw-la from_o the_o inferior_a faculty_n to_o the_o superior_a and_o hence_o the_o inventive_a faculty_n of_o the_o minister_n or_o those_o gift_n and_o ability_n which_o god_n have_v give_v he_o whereby_o he_o be_v able_a to_o express_v his_o mind_n in_o more_o fâ—ll_n and_o significant_a phrase_n than_o ordinary_a people_n shall_v not_o be_v employ_v in_o pray_v extempore_o so_o much_o as_o in_o compose_v â—et_a form_n before_o hand_n both_o private_a wherein_o those_o who_o will_v speak_v out_o of_o
