and_o though_o there_o be_v yet_o they_o question_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o these_o thing_n must_v needs_o seem_v in_o vain_a to_o they_o reason_n 2_o second_o they_o think_v the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v a_o vain_a service_n because_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o they_o they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o any_o of_o god_n service_n which_o they_o do_v and_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o no_o body_n else_o be_v they_o get_v nothing_o at_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o at_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n but_o come_v away_o as_o dead_a heart_a with_o their_o corruption_n as_o strong_a and_o they_o continue_v as_o ignorant_a of_o the_o my_o stery_n of_o christ_n and_o life_n and_o as_o unable_a to_o pray_v or_o do_v god_n any_o service_n as_o formerly_z and_o therefore_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o they_o they_o think_v it_o be_v thus_o with_o every_o body_n else_o yea_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o good_a as_o man_n speak_v of_o to_o be_v get_v in_o any_o part_n of_o god_n service_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o dare_v do_v not_o otherwise_o then_o give_v entertainment_n to_o these_o kind_n of_o thought_n be_v suggest_v to_o they_o by_o satan_n hereby_o to_o prevent_v that_o condemn_a sentence_n which_o their_o own_o conscience_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o pass_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o unprofitablenesse_n in_o god_n service_n for_o shall_v they_o admit_v of_o this_o for_o a_o truth_n that_o there_o be_v so_o much_o good_a to_o be_v get_v in_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n than_o will_v conscience_n be_v upon_o they_o and_o demand_v why_o they_o do_v then_o get_v no_o more_o good_a thereby_o and_o so_o make_v they_o call_v into_o question_n the_o truth_n and_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o perform_a duty_n and_o do_v of_o god_n service_n which_o to_o prevent_v as_o also_o to_o save_v themselves_o in_o the_o esteem_n of_o other_o so_o far_o as_o they_o can_v they_o cast_v this_o imputation_n upon_o the_o service_n of_o god_n itself_o simil._n as_o it_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o some_o servant_n that_o have_v waste_v their_o wage_n by_o some_o riotous_a course_n or_o secret_a haunt_n of_o expense_n to_o save_v their_o credit_n with_o their_o friend_n and_o such_o as_o will_v else_o be_v ready_a to_o tax_v they_o for_o ill_a husbandry_n in_o come_v away_o without_o clothes_n on_o their_o back_n or_o money_n in_o their_o purse_n they_o to_o save_v their_o credit_n and_o avoid_v blame_n unjust_o accuse_v that_o service_n they_o dwell_v in_o &_o say_v that_o it_o be_v a_o stroy_n and_o waste_v service_n much_o work_n and_o little_a wage_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v get_v in_o it_o and_o the_o like_a think_v thereby_o to_o escape_v free_a from_o blame_n which_o it_o be_v true_a they_o may_v do_v with_o those_o that_o know_v not_o the_o service_n but_o not_o with_o those_o that_o know_v how_o good_a and_o profitable_a a_o service_n it_o be_v thus_o do_v carnal_a heart_n with_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o think_v and_o say_v it_o be_v but_o vain_a to_o save_v themselves_o and_o whereas_o they_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o some_o other_o do_v thrive_v and_o grow_v better_o and_o more_o than_o themselves_o they_o will_v not_o acknowledge_v this_o to_o be_v from_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n but_o rather_o from_o some_o other_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n when_o they_o see_v other_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o part_n whilst_o themselves_o remain_v still_o gross_o ignorant_a they_o will_v not_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o get_v this_o by_o attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n and_o ordinance_n but_o rather_o impute_v it_o to_o good_a education_n to_o the_o strength_n of_o their_o memory_n and_o other_o ability_n of_o their_o own_o when_o they_o see_v other_o have_v get_v power_n over_o their_o passion_n and_o corruption_n whilst_o they_o remain_v still_o harebrained_a and_o furious_a upon_o every_o slight_a occasion_n that_o the_o wag_n of_o a_o straw_n will_v make_v they_o off_o the_o hook_n and_o make_v they_o little_a better_o than_o bedlam_n they_o will_v not_o ascribe_v any_o such_o grace_n to_o be_v power_n receive_v from_o jesus_n christ_n through_o any_o ordinance_n but_o rather_o to_o the_o goodness_n of_o their_o nature_n oh_o they_o be_v of_o a_o more_o mild_a disposition_n than_o i_o be_o of_o my_o nature_n be_v hasty_a i_o can_v help_v it_o etc._n etc._n nay_o rather_o than_o they_o will_v take_v shame_n to_o themselves_o they_o will_v lay_v the_o blame_n upon_o god_n if_o for_o want_v of_o a_o true_a change_n in_o the_o heart_n they_o remain_v without_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o supplication_n that_o they_o be_v still_o child_n and_o babe_n &_o can_v speak_v in_o prayer_n further_o than_o what_o they_o have_v get_v from_o other_o then_o will_v they_o excuse_v themselves_o and_o say_v that_o god_n do_v not_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n to_o every_o one_o alike_o not_o consider_v that_o promise_n of_o god_n give_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o they_o that_o ask_v it_o mean_v aright_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o do_v not_o give_v it_o a_o like_a to_o all_o his_o people_n but_o yet_o he_o give_v it_o so_o to_o all_o as_o it_o will_v be_v quick_o discernible_a to_o they_o that_o have_v it_o even_o this_o way_n they_o see_v many_o of_o those_o very_o negligent_a and_o careless_a herein_o who_o they_o much_o admire_v great_a one_o and_o learned_a one_o who_o they_o judge_v to_o be_v so_o wise_a that_o they_o can_v be_v thus_o mistake_v and_o therefore_o when_o they_o see_v they_o careless_a in_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n that_o either_o they_o use_v no_o prayer_n nor_o duty_n in_o their_o family_n or_o but_o seldom_o or_o if_o constant_o yet_o but_o in_o a_o slighty_a formal_a way_n so_o for_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o other_o duty_n etc._n etc._n they_o begin_v to_o think_v sure_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o needful_a this_o same_o serve_v of_o god_n in_o this_o manner_n be_v not_o so_o profitable_a for_o if_o it_o be_v certain_o such_o and_o such_o learned_a man_n and_o great_a scholar_n that_o shall_v know_v better_o what_o belong_v to_o it_o then_o so_o will_v not_o omit_v these_o thing_n as_o they_o do_v thus_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v of_o they_o in_o jude_n that_o they_o have_v some_o man_n person_n in_o admiration_n so_o some_o man_n judgement_n and_o practice_n be_v have_v in_o admiration_n and_o follow_v as_o unerring_a pattern_n and_o the_o judgement_n and_o example_n of_o these_o man_n be_v more_o to_o they_o than_o all_o the_o precept_n of_o god_n not_o consider_v that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1_o cor._n 1.26_o not_o many_o wise_a or_o great_a or_o noble_a be_v call_v reason_n 4_o the_o four_o reason_n why_o carnal_a heart_n judge_v the_o service_n of_o god_n a_o vain_a service_n be_v because_o the_o lord_n do_v many_o time_n defer_v the_o pay_n of_o his_o servant_n wage_n for_o the_o service_n which_o they_o do_v for_o he_o till_o afterward_o god_n do_v not_o give_v they_o outward_a prosperity_n it_o may_v be_v at_o all_o and_o no_o marvel_n because_o as_o his_o kingdom_n be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n so_o neither_o shall_v his_o servant_n live_v as_o in_o a_o kingdom_n here_o nay_o it_o may_v be_v they_o attain_v not_o to_o that_o inward_a joy_n and_o peace_n which_o they_o expect_v and_o shall_v be_v sure_a of_o at_o last_o together_o with_o other_o part_n of_o their_o reward_n which_o they_o be_v uncapable_a of_o while_o they_o be_v here_o only_o they_o must_v stay_v as_o those_o labourer_n for_o their_o penny_n 20._o mat._n 20._o till_o night_n so_o they_o for_o their_o reward_n till_o death_n now_o carnal_a people_n see_v nothing_o come_v in_o have_v no_o bird_n in_o their_o hand_n and_o want_v faith_n to_o believe_v and_o patience_n to_o wait_v give_v it_o over_o as_o labour_v lose_v and_o pain_n to_o no_o purpose_n that_o be_v take_v in_o this_o service_n like_v as_o in_o their_o own_o do_v service_n to_o the_o devil_n because_o when_o they_o have_v sin_v 50._o psal_n 50._o and_o god_n be_v so_o patient_a as_o not_o to_o reprove_v and_o punish_v they_o for_o the_o present_a they_o think_v he_o never_o will_v so_o in_o the_o do_n of_o good_a and_o serve_v the_o lord_n they_o think_v because_o it_o be_v not_o reward_v for_o the_o present_a therefore_o it_o never_o will_v though_o yet_o the_o lord_n have_v bind_v himself_o by_o many_o promise_n to_o reward_v they_o which_o bond_n be_v good_a debt_n and_o the_o christian_n reversion_n which_o be_v better_a than_o the_o worldling_n possession_n obj._n but_o here_o come_v a_o objection_n in_o the_o way_n which_o must_v be_v remove_v before_o we_o can_v proceed_v any_o further_o thus_o some_o may_v say_v if_o so_o many_o do_v think_v the_o service_n of_o god_n to_o be_v in_o vain_a as_o you_o say_v do_v why_o then_o do_v any_o that_o be_v thus_o natural_a and_o carnal_a keep_v god_n service_n or_o do_v he_o any_o work_n at_o all_o you_o will_v grant_v that_o many_o which_o be_v natural_a and_o carnal_a yet_o do_v much_o of_o god_n work_n pray_v prithee_o hear_v etc._n etc._n and_o if_o they_o think_v that_o all_o which_o they_o do_v be_v in_o vain_a sure_o they_o will_v not_o do_v as_o they_o do_v to_o lose_v labour_n answ_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v divers_a ground_n and_o reason_n of_o their_o do_v god_n some_o work_n and_o service_n though_o yet_o in_o their_o heart_n they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v in_o vain_a i_o will_v instance_n in_o two_o the_o oneis_n that_o they_o be_v hale_v and_o force_v hereunto_o and_o that_o they_o can_v do_v no_o less_o either_o the_o example_n of_o other_o or_o a_o habit_n get_v by_o practice_n or_o powerful_a ordinance_n make_v way_n and_o work_v for_o a_o enlighten_v conscience_n not_o quite_o benumb_v they_o be_v hereby_o force_v upon_o that_o service_n of_o god_n which_o of_o themselves_o they_o have_v no_o love_n unto_o simil._n as_o two_o man_n that_o be_v friend_n dwell_v together_o the_o one_o of_o they_o have_v much_o work_n to_o do_v call_v to_o the_o other_o to_o come_v and_o help_v happy_o he_o will_v not_o go_v himself_o but_o send_v in_o his_o man_n now_o this_o man_n go_v to_o work_v not_o out_o of_o any_o love_n to_o he_o that_o he_o go_v to_o work_v withal_o nor_o yet_o out_o of_o any_o hope_n to_o be_v the_o better_a for_o work_v with_o he_o for_o he_o be_v agree_v with_o his_o own_o master_n and_o so_o therefore_o look_v upon_o all_o other_o work_n as_o in_o vain_a only_a yet_o he_o go_v as_o send_v by_o his_o own_o master_n and_o so_o work_v for_o the_o other_o and_o dare_v do_v no_o less_o even_o so_o it_o be_v here_o god_n and_o conscience_n be_v two_o friend_n and_o god_n have_v work_n to_o do_v prayer_n to_o make_v sermon_n to_o preach_v and_o hear_v or_o affliction_n to_o suffer_v etc._n etc._n conscience_n that_o be_v god_n friend_n send_v in_o its_o man_n for_o many_o a_o man_n be_v more_o servant_n to_o his_o conscience_n than_o he_o be_v to_o god_n and_o he_o fall_v to_o this_o work_n yet_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o in_o vain_a and_o yet_o can_v do_v no_o less_o than_o go_v and_o work_v be_v send_v and_o force_v by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o conscience_n to_o which_o he_o be_v a_o servant_n and_o not_o to_o god_n though_o yet_o he_o do_v his_o work_n and_o there_o be_v many_o a_o man_n that_o if_o his_o own_o master_n conscience_n will_v let_v he_o alone_o that_o he_o can_v be_v quiet_a will_v not_o do_v half_a so_o much_o of_o god_n work_n as_o now_o he_o do_v but_o when_o he_o go_v to_o bed_n like_o a_o beast_n or_o abroad_o in_o the_o morning_n without_o prayer_n conscience_n stuff_v his_o pillow_n with_o prick_n and_o do_v so_o hale_v gall_v he_o and_o disease_n he_o that_o he_o can_v be_v quiet_a but_o it_o dog_n he_o and_o there_o it_o bait_v he_o thou_o have_v not_o be_v at_o prayer_n how_o dare_v thou_o make_v such_o adventure_n as_o thou_o do_v how_o can_v thou_o look_v to_o be_v keep_v or_o blessed_v without_o seek_v god_n etc._n etc._n hereupon_o he_o fall_v to_o work_v and_o then_o conscience_n be_v quiet_a and_o give_v he_o a_o little_a curse_a peace_n he_o be_v quiet_a too_o and_o this_o wage_n he_o have_v from_o his_o conscience_n for_o the_o work_n and_o duty_n which_o he_o do_v but_o as_o for_o any_o reward_n from_o god_n he_o have_v no_o ground_n to_o look_v for_o any_o and_o yet_o do_v what_o he_o do_v upon_o this_o ground_n i_o grant_v the_o best_a of_o god_n servant_n be_v bind_v to_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o conscience_n but_o wicked_a man_n be_v more_o drive_v by_o the_o lash_n and_o accusation_n of_o conscience_n then_o draw_v to_o duty_n by_o the_o light_n thereof_o the_o other_o ground_n of_o this_o their_o do_v god_n some_o work_n though_o yet_o in_o their_o heart_n they_o think_v that_o service_n of_o god_n to_o be_v in_o vain_a be_v this_o they_o do_v it_o to_o make_v sure_a uncertainty_n for_o though_o for_o their_o own_o part_n they_o be_v settle_v in_o the_o thought_n and_o resolution_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o think_v and_o the_o general_a acknowledgement_n of_o the_o contrary_a by_o other_o or_o happy_o upon_o the_o behold_n of_o some_o of_o god_n people_n and_o their_o carriage_n in_o sickness_n and_o at_o the_o approach_n of_o death_n how_o comfortable_o they_o
have_v do_v some_o good_a to_o other_o but_o here_o no_o body_n have_v be_v the_o better_a for_o i_o but_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v rather_o the_o worse_a it_o may_v be_v i_o have_v be_v a_o jonah_n common_o make_v by_o the_o people_n of_o god_n as_o if_o his_o service_n be_v indeed_o altogether_o vain_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v divers_a way_n answ_n 1_o that_o the_o service_n of_o god_n which_o a_o soul_n do_v may_v be_v may_v be_v profitable_a to_o other_o though_o for_o the_o present_a or_o in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n little_a or_o nothing_o so_o to_o it_o self_n for_o the_o act_n or_o part_n of_o god_n service_n be_v of_o divers_a kind_n some_o in_o which_o the_o lord_n and_o master_n himself_o have_v the_o chief_a hand_n he_o be_v especial_o the_o agent_n and_o we_o patient_n as_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o duty_n of_o that_o nature_n other_o some_o again_o there_o be_v in_o which_o man_n be_v more_o say_v to_o be_v a_o agent_n then_o in_o the_o former_a as_o in_o prayer_n work_v of_o charity_n take_v up_o the_o cross_n and_o the_o like_a now_o its_o true_a for_o the_o first_o if_o a_o soul_n get_v no_o good_a at_o they_o it_o self_n at_o the_o word_n at_o the_o sacrament_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o that_o kind_n that_o service_n be_v like_a to_o be_v in_o vain_a altogether_o but_o for_o the_o latter_a it_o will_v not_o hold_v viz._n in_o suffering_n for_o christ_n and_o the_o like_a though_o a_o man_n may_v seem_v to_o have_v lose_v not_o his_o labour_n only_o but_o much_o other_o way_n in_o his_o estate_n credit_n liberty_n and_o the_o like_a in_o so_o much_o that_o he_o may_v suffer_v the_o spoil_n of_o all_o his_o good_n and_o himself_o die_v in_o the_o gaol_n yet_o this_o service_n may_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o beside_o his_o own_o gain_n in_o spiritual_a respect_n the_o church_n of_o god_n may_v have_v more_o light_n and_o liberty_n hereby_o in_o after_o time_n also_o of_o prayer_n and_o seek_v the_o lord_n the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v 12.14_o 2_o cor._n 12.14_o that_o the_o parent_n lay_v up_o for_o the_o child_n so_o do_v one_o christian_a for_o another_o for_o these_o duty_n be_v proper_o compare_v to_o sow_v of_o seed_n and_o christ_n say_v one_o sow_v 4.37_o joh._n 4.37_o and_o another_o reap_v and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o many_o a_o christian_n and_o parent_n have_v prayer_n hang_v upon_o god_n file_n in_o heaven_n unanswered_a for_o their_o child_n and_o the_o church_n of_o god_n though_o make_v long_o ago_o so_o that_o that_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v labour_n lose_v that_o be_v take_v that_o way_n but_o yet_o as_o ahasuerus_n 6.1_o ester_n 6.1_o call_v for_o the_o record_n after_o a_o certain_a time_n and_o find_v there_o such_o a_o piece_n of_o service_n do_v by_o mordecai_n not_o yet_o reward_v he_o forthwith_o give_v he_o wage_n for_o his_o work_n and_o bountiful_o reward_v he_o so_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o due_a time_n will_v look_v over_o his_o file_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v and_o find_v the_o parent_n prayer_n make_v for_o the_o child_n and_o the_o christian_n prayer_n make_v for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n hang_v still_o unanswered_a he_o will_v undoubted_o return_v they_o a_o answer_n in_o a_o time_n accept_v and_o because_o a_o parent_n or_o a_o christian_n do_v not_o receive_v a_o answer_n hereof_o present_o or_o wage_n for_o his_o work_n in_o the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n or_o live_v to_o see_v other_o the_o better_a for_o it_o shall_v he_o therefore_o conclude_v it_o be_v a_o vain_a service_n or_o the_o work_n a_o vain_a work_n simil._n when_o a_o man_n have_v be_v at_o pain_n &_o cost_v in_o till_v &_o sow_v of_o his_o ground_n though_o he_o do_v not_o live_v to_o the_o harvest_n to_o reap_v the_o crop_n himself_o yet_o will_v he_o not_o account_v his_o labour_n lose_v because_o he_o can_v make_v his_o will_n of_o it_o and_o his_o heir_n executor_n and_o such_o as_o he_o do_v entire_o love_n
