it_o can_v get_v which_o be_v the_o way_n of_o a_o lame_a and_o imperfect_a government_n that_o be_v off_o its_o natural_a hinge_n when_o society_n be_v put_v into_o a_o unnatural_a frame_n and_o answerable_a likewise_o will_v be_v the_o benefit_n of_o government_n and_o society_n which_o will_v be_v more_o full_a and_o perfect_a or_o lame_a and_o limit_v according_a as_o the_o other_o be_v now_o the_o case_n which_o he_o put_v of_o a_o rightful_a king_n be_v violent_o keep_v out_o of_o the_o administration_n of_o his_o authority_n be_v a_o unnatural_a and_o maim_a state_n of_o society_n and_o the_o preservation_n of_o government_n and_o society_n therein_o must_v be_v preserve_v it_o so_o as_o suit_n with_o that_o condition_n i_o confess_v it_o be_v a_o great_a blow_n to_o society_n to_o have_v the_o head_n of_o the_o state_n keep_v from_o communication_n with_o the_o body_n it_o be_v then_o out_o of_o the_o natural_a course_n and_o labour_n in_o a_o maim_a and_o force_a condition_n but_o this_o do_v not_o dissolve_v the_o be_v of_o the_o society_n for_o that_o lie_v in_o the_o mutual_a relation_n and_o obligation_n of_o the_o head_n and_o member_n the_o respective_a society_n betwixt_o a_o bishop_n and_o his_o flock_n a_o husband_n and_o wife_n a_o prince_n and_o people_n be_v not_o dissolve_v when_o the_o prince_n or_o bishop_n or_o husband_n be_v keep_v apart_o by_o force_n and_o hinder_v from_o afford_v their_o proper_a office_n and_o communication_n to_o their_o several_a society_n because_o the_o mutual_a relation_n and_o obligation_n still_o remain_v but_o beside_o the_o be_v there_o be_v the_o benefit_n of_o society_n and_o how_o shall_v they_o he_o have_v when_o the_o head_n and_o body_n be_v thus_o divide_v concern_v this_o i_o observe_v that_o all_o seek_n of_o these_o benefit_n be_v to_o be_v under_o rule_n and_o limitation_n and_o these_o be_v all_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n which_o be_v social_n duty_n so_o the_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n must_v rule_v and_o bound_v we_o in_o compass_v any_o benefit_n of_o society_n which_o we_o must_v never_o pretend_v to_o set_v up_o or_o pursue_v by_o unrighteous_a way_n all_o these_o benefit_n of_o society_n then_o be_v only_o such_o benefit_n as_o can_v be_v have_v in_o observance_n of_o god_n law_n of_o justice_n truth_n and_o faithfulness_n and_o how_o shall_v these_o benefit_n be_v have_v in_o society_n in_o the_o forementioned_a maim_v force_a and_o unnatural_a state_n when_o the_o head_n be_v keep_v from_o free_a communication_n with_o the_o member_n it_o be_v plain_a in_o a_o lame_a unnatural_a state_n they_o can_v be_v have_v in_o the_o natural_a and_o perfect_a course_n and_o therefore_o man_n must_v do_v the_o best_a they_o can_v to_o secure_v they_o by_o other_o method_n consist_v with_o

oath_n and_o as_o he_o himself_o observe_v p._n 28._o and_o here_o methinks_v it_o shall_v be_v hard_a to_o get_v off_o from_o maintain_v and_o defend_v if_o the_o legal_a right_n be_v allow_v to_o remain_v which_o they_o swear_v to_o maintain_v and_o defend_v he_o in_o and_o the_o maintenance_n promise_v be_v against_o all_o attempt_n whatsoever_o against_o his_o person_n crown_n and_o dignity_n now_o the_o crown_n and_o dignity_n be_v he_o who_o have_v the_o best_a right_n to_o they_o right_o make_v property_n as_o i_o former_o observe_v so_o leave_v the_o legal_a right_n to_o make_v king_n illegal_a act_n a_o discharge_v of_o subject_n allegiance_n and_o legal_a defence_n which_o agree_v equal_o ill_a in_o my_o opinion_n with_o the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o with_o passive_a obedience_n for_o that_o be_v to_o be_v so_o passive_a as_o to_o make_v no_o resistance_n and_o to_o be_v so_o obedient_a as_o to_o pay_v all_o due_a service_n and_o allegiance_n even_o to_o such_o illegal_a invader_n of_o religion_n and_o law_n nor_o be_v this_o duty_n take_v off_o by_o the_o abuse_n they_o will_v make_v of_o the_o subject_n performance_n in_o turn_v that_o power_n upon_o they_o afterward_o to_o persecute_v and_o oppress_v those_o who_o be_v its_o dutyful_a supporter_n for_o no_o duty_n be_v take_v off_o by_o the_o accidental_a abuse_n which_o other_o may_v make_v of_o our_o payment_n of_o it_o nor_o be_v this_o in_o particular_a thought_n to_o be_v take_v off_o by_o the_o primitive_a christian_n they_o be_v not_o without_o plain_a appearance_n that_o if_o a_o persecutor_n keep_v the_o throne_n he_o will_v turn_v or_o continue_v his_o power_n to_o persecute_v and_o oppress_v they_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o dare_v never_o be_v want_v in_o any_o part_n or_o duty_n of_o good_a subject_n in_o their_o several_a station_n to_o keep_v he_o thereon_o either_o against_o any_o domestic_a rebellion_n or_o foreign_a invasion_n the_o subject_n duty_n in_o these_o case_n i_o think_v be_v as_o to_o the_o illegal_a way_n never_o to_o act_v under_o he_o or_o serve_v he_o in_o the_o illegal_a thing_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o to_o be_v ready_a in_o their_o several_a station_n to_o defend_v his_o person_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o crown_n when_o either_o subject_a or_o foreigner_n shall_v rise_v against_o he_o and_o it_o be_v their_o act_n in_o the_o illegal_a thing_n that_o the_o law_n punish_v but_o no_o law_n will_v punish_v they_o for_o act_v to_o support_v his_o person_n and_o defend_v his_o crown_n though_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o traitor_n as_o he_o urge_v p._n 30._o for_o act_v for_o he_o against_o law_n yet_o never_o for_o defend_v he_o when_o assault_v for_o that_o be_v according_a to_o law_n so_o though_o they_o be_v not_o to_o defend_v such_o illegal_a opposer_n in_o a_o illegal_a thing_n yet_o be_v they_o bind_v to_o give_v he_o the_o due_a defence_n of_o allegiance_n and_o the_o legal_a oath_n notwithstanding_o it_o and_o thus_o i_o have_v consider_v both_o the_o scripture_n and_o reason_n he_o have_v offer_v for_o this_o right_n of_o providence_n and_o as_o the_o former_a proof_n i_o think_v show_v reason_n enough_o to_o overthrow_v it_o so_o he_o have_v bring_v no_o good_a reason_n to_o support_v it_o and_o therefore_o mere_a providential_a possession_n of_o another_o crown_n without_o other_o title_n be_v no_o right_a much_o less_o such_o as_o shall_v set_v aside_o the_o legal_a right_n so_o that_o the_o legal_a right_n will_v stand_v good_a notwithstanding_o it_o and_o if_o he_o that_o have_v the_o legal_a right_n have_v the_o best_a right_n to_o the_o crown_n though_o another_o be_v get_v into_o possession_n the_o supposal_n of_o a_o legal_a right_n in_o another_o will_v leave_v all_o the_o first_o mention_v difficulty_n in_o force_n against_o transfer_v allegiance_n to_o the_o possessor_n for_o in_o engage_v by_o such_o allegiance_n to_o help_v he_o in_o keep_v out_o the_o right_a owner_n subject_n will_v be_v very_o unrighteous_a and_o engage_v also_o thereby_o to_o resist_v the_o authority_n of_o their_o rightful_a prince_n they_o will_v be_v very_o undutiful_a and_o rebellious_a and_o therein_o moreover_o to_o break_v their_o former_a promise_n and_o oath_n they_o will_v be_v very_o perfidious_a and_o perjurious_a all_o which_o i_o think_v be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v off_o by_o the_o supposal_n of_o legal_a right_n in_o the_o eject_v prince_n but_o only_o by_o prove_v he_o have_v part_v from_o it_o and_o that_o the_o possessor_n be_v vest_v with_o it_o which_o use_v to_o be_v the_o principle_n of_o the_o public_a act_n on_o such_o revolution_n and_o particular_o be_v so_o in_o our_o present_a case_n and_o which_o as_o the_o author_n have_v not_o at_o all_o meddle_v with_o so_o neither_o shall_v 1_n and_o thus_o honour_a sir_n i_o have_v consider_v what_o this_o reverend_a and_o learned_a person_n have_v offer_v on_o this_o argument_n wherein_o i_o have_v endeavour_v to_o take_v the_o freedom_n which_o be_v fit_v with_o his_o opinion_n but_o to_o show_v the_o respect_n which_o i_o have_v and_o his_o many_o excellent_a both_o pious_a and_o learned_a labour_n have_v so_o long_o give_v the_o serious_a and_o wise_a part_n of_o man_n cause_n to_o have_v for_o his_o person_n i_o pray_v god_n to_o enlighten_v and_o thereby_o to_o awaken_v the_o conscience_n of_o all_o concern_v in_o this_o question_n some_o may_v be_v apt_a to_o take_v offence_n at_o a_o free_a discussion_n of_o these_o ground_n think_v it_o may_v touch_v too_o near_o on_o reputation_n but_o as_o many_o as_o prefer_v religion_n before_o themselves_o will_v be_v more_o careful_a to_o keep_v its_o duty_n in_o credit_n than_o to_o keep_v up_o their_o own_o credit_n and_o i_o be_o sure_a all_o that_o have_v a_o serious_a sense_n of_o christianity_n and_o reverence_n for_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o see_v that_o they_o have_v a_o much_o high_o concern_v than_o reputation_n in_o this_o dispute_n the_o difficulty_n be_v of_o high_a importance_n in_o that_o account_n we_o must_v all_o one_o day_n make_v before_o
