a_o religion_n that_o be_v pure_a and_o undefiled_a holy_a and_o all_o light_n shall_v produce_v effect_n so_o unlike_o its_o self_n in_o the_o life_n of_o most_o of_o its_o votary_n that_o man_n shall_v so_o free_o indulge_v themselves_o in_o almost_o all_o manner_n of_o vice_n and_o yet_o profess_v a_o religion_n that_o allow_v none_o at_o a_o cheap_a rate_n then_o eternal_a damnation_n that_o they_o shall_v call_v upon_o themselves_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a jesus_n &_o yet_o live_v as_o if_o they_o design_v the_o disparagement_n of_o it_o be_v a_o reflection_n that_o no_o man_n that_o honour_v his_o god_n or_o have_v a_o concern_v for_o his_o religion_n or_o the_o least_o respect_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n can_v entertain_v without_o a_o very_a deep_a and_o most_o afflictive_a resentment_n i_o do_v not_o come_v to_o this_o place_n to_o enter_v a_o idle_a complaint_n that_o it_o be_v thus_o nor_o to_o spend_v this_o time_n in_o fruitless_a tear_n lament_v its_o be_v so_o but_o to_o try_v if_o i_o can_v discover_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o monstrous_a absurdity_n and_o offer_v something_o by_o way_n of_o remedy_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o that_o with_o your_o wont_a candour_n and_o clemency_n you_o will_v hear_v i_o a_o few_o word_n i_o can_v resolve_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o into_o nothing_o methinks_v so_o charitable_o as_o into_o man_n error_n and_o mistake_n about_o their_o religion_n for_o i_o have_v more_o charity_n for_o they_o that_o profess_v the_o religion_n of_o christ_n than_o to_o think_v they_o sin_n either_o out_o of_o design_n or_o of_o malicious_a wickedness_n among_o these_o error_n i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o fix_v upon_o any_o of_o a_o more_o mischevous_a influence_n than_o that_o primitive_a one_o that_o debauch_v this_o religion_n at_o first_o which_o be_v propagate_v by_o that_o filthy_a sect_n of_o the_o gnostic_n and_o fix_v by_o simon_n the_o sorcerer_n with_o such_o strength_n of_o magic_n that_o it_o stick_v fast_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o most_o man_n to_o this_o day_n and_o that_o be_v a_o opinion_n that_o the_o gospel_n supersede_v the_o law_n and_o discharge_v from_o obedience_n to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v all_o promise_n of_o immunity_n and_o privilege_n to_o be_v enjoy_v by_o the_o saint_n without_o any_o respect_n to_o the_o drudgery_n of_o duty_n the_o grace_n which_o the_o gospel_n so_o much_o magnify_v be_v faith_n and_o that_o faith_n nothing_o else_o but_o a_o brisk_a confidence_n of_o be_v save_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n without_o any_o necessity_n of_o a_o righteousness_n of_o our_o own_o this_o be_v the_o main_a fundamental_a error_n which_o lie_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o that_o profaneness_n which_o be_v the_o reproach_n and_o shame_n of_o christian_a religion_n at_o this_o day_n and_o it_o be_v the_o more_o dangerous_a because_o it_o be_v strange_o charm_v and_o easy_o insinuate_v itself_o into_o the_o mind_n of_o carnal_a men._n against_o this_o therefore_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v so_o very_o express_v and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v take_v care_n to_o furnish_v all_o man_n with_o so_o many_o obvious_a and_o plain_a remedy_n that_o i_o must_v needs_o count_v it_o either_o artifice_n and_o design_n or_o brutish_a inadvertency_n unto_o thing_n that_o betray_v they_o into_o it_o these_o word_n that_o i_o have_v read_v contain_v one_o and_o they_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o considerable_a for_o come_v from_o our_o lord_n own_o mouth_n who_o certain_o best_o know_v the_o reason_n of_o his_o own_o come_n into_o the_o world_n and_o the_o purpose_n of_o that_o religion_n which_o he_o intend_v to_o find_v in_o it_o and_o he_o we_o see_v here_o even_o then_o when_o he_o be_v promise_v so_o many_o blessing_n to_o all_o that_o shall_v become_v votary_n to_o it_o and_o when_o multitude_n flock_v to_o he_o in_o expectation_n of_o some_o new_a religion_n or_o probable_o some_o great_a indulgence_n to_o be_v grant_v by_o he_o make_v this_o plain_a declaration_n to_o they_o and_o all_o the_o world_n that_o he_o do_v not_o come_v to_o destroy_v the_o law_n or_o the_o prophet_n but_o to_o fulfil_v they_o which_o word_n be_v a_o evident_a prolepsis_n whereby_o our_o lord_n anticipate_v a_o error_n in_o some_o and_o a_o calumny_n its_o probable_a in_o other_o that_o he_o come_v to_o cancel_v all_o law_n and_o discharge_v his_o follower_n from_o all_o necessity_n of_o obedience_n thereto_o which_o error_n or_o calumny_n 1._o he_o forbid_v all_o thought_n of_o in_o they_o think_v not_o 2._o discliams_n any_o intention_n of_o in_o himself_o i_o be_o not_o come_v to_o destroy_v 3._o and_o three_o assert_n the_o direct_a contrary_n and_o some_o thing_n more_o too_o i_o be_o not_o come_v to_o destroy_v but_o to_o fulfil_v in_o speak_v to_o which_o word_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o do_v these_o three_o follow_a thing_n 1._o give_v you_o the_o plain_a sense_n and_o purport_n of_o the_o word_n 2._o make_v good_a the_o truth_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n affirm_v in_o they_o 3._o draw_v some_o useful_a deduction_n and_o inference_n from_o they_o 1._o a_o little_a matter_n will_v serve_v upon_o the_o first_o of_o these_o in_o such_o a_o audience_n as_o this_o by_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n you_o be_v to_o understand_v that_o rule_n of_o life_n and_o manner_n that_o god_n be_v please_v to_o deliver_v to_o the_o jew_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n and_o by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o prophet_n this_o rule_n be_v so_o comprehensive_a and_o full_a as_o to_o reach_v all_o circumstance_n and_o take_v in_o all_o instance_n of_o duty_n that_o man_n owe_v to_o god_n themselves_o or_o one_o another_o and_o therefore_o these_o law_n for_o our_o more_o distinct_a apprehension_n of_o they_o be_v distinguishable_a into_o three_o rank_n moral_n judicial_a and_o levitical_a the_o moral_a be_v those_o which_o direct_a man_n in_o the_o instance_n of_o piety_n justice_n and_o charity_n temperance_n and_o chastity_n thing_n of_o a_o eternal_a obligation_n and_o goodness_n the_o judicial_a those_o that_o concern_v they_o as_o a_o theocrasie_n or_o kingdom_n and_o the_o levitical_a those_o that_o concern_v they_o as_o a_o church_n the_o business_n of_o the_o prophet_n with_o respect_n to_o these_o law_n be_v chief_o to_o give_v the_o true_a sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o they_o when_o man_n mistake_v they_o and_o by_o promise_n and_o threaten_n to_o awaken_v man_n into_o a_o due_a observance_n of_o they_o when_o they_o become_v careless_a and_o negligent_a now_o destroy_v these_o be_v plain_o intelligible_a without_o a_o comment_n it_o mean_v the_o lose_v the_o obligation_n of_o these_o law_n &_o discharge_v man_n from_o any_o necessity_n of_o be_v obedient_a to_o they_o and_o by_o this_o you_o will_v easy_o understand_v what_o be_v say_v in_o contraposition_n to_o it_o and_o what_o fulfil_v of_o they_o mean_n not_o only_o assert_v and_o continue_v the_o force_n of_o they_o but_o something_o more_o and_o that_o be_v one_o or_o both_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o the_o add_v more_o strength_n to_o they_o assert_v obedience_n upon_o better_a principle_n and_o strong_a motive_n than_o it_o be_v before_o 2._o or_o second_o set_v the_o duty_n and_o instance_n of_o obedience_n at_o a_o high_a pitch_n than_o they_o be_v former_o i._n e._n in_o plain_a term_n require_v more_o from_o a_o christian_a then_o either_o be_v or_o at_o least_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v require_v from_o a_o jew_n of_o old_a in_o these_o two_o thing_n do_v the_o sense_n of_o our_o saviour_n fulfil_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n consist_v and_o according_o i_o shall_v undertake_v to_o prove_v that_o our_o lord_n come_v not_o only_o to_o establish_v law_n and_o obedience_n to_o it_o but_o to_o add_v strength_n to_o the_o one_o and_o to_o sublimate_v the_o other_o 2._o and_o this_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n propose_v which_o that_o i_o may_v do_v as_o distinct_o and_o full_o as_o so_o little_a a_o time_n will_v give_v i_o leave_v i_o shall_v consider_v law_n according_a to_o the_o forename_a division_n of_o they_o 1_o beginning_n with_o the_o moral_a law_n of_o god_n those_o eternal_a rule_n of_o piety_n justice_n and_o
we_o that_o our_o labour_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o present_a success_n as_o well_o as_o future_a reward_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v assist_v in_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o reward_v for_o it_o st._n john_n observe_v it_o as_o a_o great_a preference_n of_o the_o gospel_n above_o the_o law_n john_n 1_o 17_o that_o the_o law_n be_v give_v by_o moses_n but_o grace_n come_v by_o jesus_n christ_n all_o that_o moses_n do_v be_v to_o deliver_v a_o systeme_n of_o law_n to_o the_o world_n and_o teach_v man_n their_o duty_n but_o christ_n beside_o this_o purchase_v grace_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o do_v our_o duty_n to_o be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o and_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o do_v all_o thing_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v therefore_o good_a man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v under_o grace_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n sure_a to_o be_v victorious_a in_o duty_n rom._n 6.14_o to_o which_o i_o need_v but_o add_v one_o thing_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v make_v the_o great_a almoner_n and_o bestower_n of_o this_o grace_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o do_v but_o see_v by_o what_o a_o affect_a argument_n our_o lord_n have_v assure_v we_o that_o god_n will_v give_v this_o spirit_n to_o those_o that_o ask_v he_o mat._n 7.9_o 10_o 11._o but_o three_o i_o go_v on_o to_o show_v that_o our_o lord_n have_v not_o only_o thus_o establish_v the_o necessity_n of_o duty_n and_o do_v it_o upon_o better_a principle_n but_o he_o have_v set_v the_o instance_n of_o it_o at_o a_o high_a pitch_n than_o they_o be_v former_o and_o for_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o i_o appeal_v only_o to_o the_o follow_a sermon_n and_o subsequent_a particular_n of_o duty_n that_o he_o instance_n in_o you_o may_v see_v it_o clear_a in_o the_o case_n of_o murder_n of_o oath_n and_o charity_n etc._n etc._n something_o be_v add_v to_o the_o law_n in_o all_o these_o case_n and_o something_o teach_v by_o our_o saviour_n over_o and_o above_o what_o be_v say_v by_o they_o of_o old_a time_n some_o thing_n that_o be_v indulge_v the_o jew_n and_o suppose_v lawful_a be_v make_v for_o ever_o unlawful_a to_o a_o christian_a upon_o which_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o other_o it_o be_v say_v v._o 20_o that_o unless_o our_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n we_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o sure_o no_o christian_a have_v any_o reason_n to_o take_v this_o ill_a or_o to_o think_v himself_o hardly_o deal_v with_o for_o if_o our_o encouragement_n and_o help_n be_v so_o much_o great_a it_o be_v but_o reasonable_a that_o our_o return_n shall_v be_v in_o some_o measure_n proportionable_a this_o be_v enough_o to_o clear_v what_o i_o undertake_v as_o to_o this_o first_o branch_n of_o law_n i._n e._n the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o obedience_n to_o they_o 2._o i_o proceed_v to_o consider_v the_o second_o i._n e._n humane_a law_n respect_v civil_a matter_n and_o to_o consider_v whether_o christ_n come_v to_o destroy_v these_o and_o not_o rather_o to_o fulfil_v they_o it_o have_v be_v a_o old_a imputation_n upon_o christian_a religion_n and_o a_o artifice_n to_o prejudice_n king_n against_o it_o to_o represent_v it_o a_o enemy_n to_o government_n thus_o our_o bless_a lord_n must_v be_v accuse_v as_o a_o enemy_n to_o caesar_n and_o his_o apostle_n persecute_v as_o factious_a seditious_a person_n and_o those_o that_o turn_v the_o world_n upside_o down_o and_o upon_o this_o the_o primitive_a christian_n be_v most_o prosecute_v as_o we_o learn_v from_o the_o ancient_a brave_a apologist_n for_o they_o but_o how_o invidious_o unjust_a this_o accusation_n be_v against_o our_o lord_n and_o be_v yet_o against_o his_o religion_n a_o little_a pain_n will_v suffice_v to_o show_v clear_o 1._o for_o first_o i_o observe_v that_o out_o lord_n be_v so_o very_o tender_a of_o law_n and_o so_o mighty_a careful_a not_o to_o give_v the_o least_o suspicion_n of_o the_o contrary_a that_o in_o all_o thing_n he_o show_v himself_o most_o ready_a to_o comply_v with_o they_o he_o wave_v his_o own_o privilege_n when_o it_o may_v legal_o have_v be_v plead_v in_o bar_n of_o it_o and_o pay_v tribute_n as_o a_o stranger_n although_o he_o be_v at_o the_o expense_n of_o a_o miracle_n to_o do_v it_o and_o when_o he_o be_v convene_v before_o pilate_n and_o interrogated_a about_o his_o kingdom_n he_o so_o full_o satisfy_v he_o that_o it_o be_v not_o of_o this_o world_n nor_o in_o the_o least_o a_o enemy_n to_o government_n in_o it_o that_o pilate_n himself_o declare_v he_o innocent_a and_o acquit_v he_o from_o the_o guilt_n of_o that_o spiteful_a accusation_n joh._n 18.36_o 2._o from_o which_o in_o the_o second_o place_n you_o may_v collect_v that_o his_o doctrine_n in_o this_o be_v accordant_a to_o his_o practice_n for_o by_o declare_v his_o kingdom_n not_o to_o be_v of_o this_o world_n he_o have_v sufficient_o secure_v all_o king_n that_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v rival_v in_o their_o throne_n by_o he_o that_o neither_o he_o nor_o his_o religion_n will_v ever_o entrench_v upon_o their_o right_n or_o invade_v their_o prerogative_n and_o yet_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v many_o express_a doctrine_n of_o his_o to_o this_o purpose_n i_o mention_v two_o only_a one_o be_v his_o speech_n to_o peter_n mat._n 26.52_o with_o his_o reason_n annex_v to_o it_o put_v up_o thy_o sword_n for_o all_o they_o that_o take_v the_o sword_n shall_v perish_v by_o the_o sword_n which_o word_n be_v plain_a without_o any_o art_n to_o improve_v they_o and_o make_v it_o for_o ever_o unlawful_a for_o any_o private_a person_n to_o use_v the_o sword_n against_o his_o lawful_a governor_n in_o any_o case_n no_o not_o in_o the_o so_o much_o plead_v case_n of_o religion_n for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a to_o use_v it_o in_o defence_n of_o christ_n own_o person_n it_o certain_o can_v be_v lawful_a in_o none_o no_o not_o in_o defence_n of_o his_o religion_n another_o be_v that_o know_a answer_n that_o he_o give_v to_o the_o most_o insidious_a question_n that_o be_v ever_o propose_v to_o he_o mat._n 22.22_o give_v unto_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v caesar_n and_o unto_o god_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v go_n by_o which_o he_o have_v happy_o adjust_v the_o right_n of_o god_n and_o the_o king_n and_o command_v man_n to_o be_v as_o careful_a to_o pay_v one_o his_o due_a as_o the_o other_o and_o if_o allegiance_n be_v tie_v upon_o man_n by_o the_o same_o band_n that_o duty_n be_v to_o god_n the_o obligation_n be_v strong_a enough_o and_o can_v be_v strong_a but_o this_o be_v too_o little_a to_o say_v in_o this_o case_n truth_n and_o justice_n to_o our_o holy_a religion_n will_v warrant_v i_o to_o say_v more_o viz._n that_o christ_n have_v not_o only_o thus_o establish_v the_o law_n of_o government_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o subjection_n to_o it_o but_o he_o have_v indeed_o fulfil_v it_o fix_v it_o upon_o firm_a principle_n and_o strong_a reason_n than_o it_o be_v before_o for_o that_o religion_n that_o make_v subjection_n to_o caesar_n as_o necessary_a as_o duty_n to_o god_n that_o religion_n that_o tie_v subjection_n immediate_o upon_o the_o conscience_n that_o religion_n that_o declare_v government_n to_o be_v god_n own_o institution_n and_o that_o king_n be_v immediate_o appoint_v by_o he_o that_o religion_n that_o interest_n god_n in_o resistance_n as_o much_o as_o the_o king_n that_o religion_n that_o press_v man_n to_o subjection_n upon_o reason_n of_o their_o love_n to_o god_n and_o for_o the_o lord_n sake_n that_o religion_n that_o threaten_v damnation_n as_o express_o to_o resistance_n as_o to_o any_o other_o sin_n whatsoever_o that_o religion_n which_o so_o strict_o forbid_v and_o so_o severe_o threaten_v all_o those_o evil_n from_o whence_o rebellion_n and_o resistance_n proceed_v such_o as_o pride_n and_o ambition_n covetousness_n and_o discontent_n faction_n and_o a_o busie-medling_a in_o other_o man_n matter_n and_o whatever_o other_o cause_n there_o be_v of_o these_o thing_n that_o religion_n which_o by_o argument_n of_o no_o less_o than_o eternal_a felicity_n enjoin_v the_o practice_n of_o such_o virtue_n as_o make_v rebellion_n impossible_a such_o as_o meekness_n and_o humility_n patience_n and_o contentedness_n in_o every_o condition_n peaceableness_n and_o keep_n within_o our_o own_o call_n love_n and_o a_o universal_a charity_n unto_o all_o man_n i_o say_v a_o religion_n that_o do_v all_o this_o as_o it_o be_v notorious_a the_o christian_a religion_n do_v do_v indeed_o fulfil_v and_o fix_v subjection_n upon_o the_o most_o steady_a principle_n that_o can_v be_v do_v incomparable_o more_o to_o this_o purpose_n than_o the_o utmost_a policy_n or_o power_n of_o man_n shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o do_v for_o these_o can_v but_o compel_v or_o
