to_o wit_n that_o they_o can_v read_v and_o if_o parent_n will_v not_o be_v serious_o concern_v in_o this_o themselves_o god_n require_v we_o to_o take_v some_o course_n to_o bring_v up_o their_o young_a one_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o true_o if_o this_o external_a easy_a mean_n be_v neglect_v we_o can_v expect_v little_a of_o other_o mean_n if_o this_o be_v mind_v it_o may_v will_v keep_v their_o child_n at_o the_o school_n for_o many_o day_n and_o i_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o who_o can_v say_v that_o it_o be_v mere_a necessity_n that_o let_v they_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o can_v say_v you_o will_v fain_o bring_v up_o your_o child_n at_o school_n and_o you_o speak_v to_o magistrate_n or_o to_o church-session_n for_o help_v and_o that_o it_o be_v refuse_v you_o it_o be_v your_o part_n to_o seek_v for_o help_v that_o be_v real_o unable_a and_o it_o lie_v on_o you_o to_o see_v to_o it_o yourselves_o who_o be_v able_a and_o while_o you_o neither_o do_v yourselves_o nor_o seek_v help_n from_o other_o you_o be_v utter_o in-excusable_a 2._o i_o will_v commend_v to_o you_o the_o necessity_n of_o use_v private_a mean_n and_o that_o great_a conveniency_n if_o not_o necessity_n of_o more_o labourer_n if_o it_o be_v know_v how_o numerous_a a_o people_n we_o be_v how_o many_o hunder_v every_o one_o who_o labour_n among_o you_o have_v under_o his_o charge_n how_o little_a time_n we_o have_v to_o go_v through_o you_o all_o particular_o and_o what_o abound_v ignorance_n there_o be_v in_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o people_n i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v think_v that_o the_o charge_n of_o any_o one_o of_o we_o may_v require_v two_o to_o discharge_v it_o suitable_o which_o we_o do_v not_o preâ—â—e_v to_o spare_v the_o great_a subject_n of_o minister_n preach_v and_o that_o which_o you_o shall_v hear_v most_o glad_o and_o if_o this_o be_v most_o profitable_a for_o you_o we_o may_v be_v particular_a in_o some_o few_o direction_n to_o you_o which_o will_v be_v as_o so_o many_o branch_n of_o the_o use_n and_o first_o of_o all_o truth_n that_o people_n will_v welcome_v and_o study_v they_o will_v welcome_v speculation_n then_o with_o these_o soulsaving_a truth_n as_o that_o christ_n be_v bear_v that_o he_o be_v a_o true_a man_n that_o he_o be_v and_o be_v king_n priest_n and_o prophet_n of_o his_o church_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o other_o thing_n be_v hear_v with_o more_o greediness_n but_o if_o these_o be_v the_o great_a subject_n of_o minister_n preach_v it_o shall_v be_v your_o great_a study_n to_o know_v christ_n in_o his_o person_n nature_n office_n and_o covenant_n what_o he_o be_v to_o you_o and_o what_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o he_o and_o how_o you_o shall_v walk_v in_o he_o and_o with_o he_o this_o be_v paul_n aim_n i_o count_v say_v he_o all_o thing_n loss_n and_o dung_n for_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n that_o i_o may_v know_v he_o and_o the_o power_n of_o his_o resurrection_n and_o the_o fellowship_n of_o his_o suffering_n etc._n etc._n phil._n 3.8_o 9_o 10._o it_o be_v my_o design_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v not_o only_o to_o make_v he_o know_v but_o to_o know_v he_o myself_o there_o be_v little_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o distinctness_n in_o use_n make_v of_o his_o office_n and_o folk_n take_v but_o little_a pain_n to_o will_v you_o have_v be_v o_o what_o will_v sabbath-day_n and_o weekday_n your_o lie_v down_o and_o rise_v up_o your_o live_n and_o die_v be_v if_o these_o news_n have_v not_o be_v you_o shall_v have_v have_v a_o sinful_a and_o sad_a life_n and_o a_o most_o comfortless_a and_o terrible_a death_n therefore_o think_v this_o gospel_n a_o thing_n of_o more_o worth_n than_o you_o do_v and_o count_v their_o foot_n beautiful_a on_o the_o mountain_n that_o bring_v these_o news_n and_o glad_a tiding_n as_o it_o be_v isa_n 52._o that_o good_a report_n of_o make_v peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o at_o all_o even_o as_o a_o fallen-star_n may_v seem_v to_o glance_v more_o than_o a_o fix_a one_o that_o be_v overclouded_n yet_o it_o have_v no_o solid_a light_n know_v then_o that_o faith_n be_v call_v for_o but_o take_v not_o every_o sort_n of_o faith_n for_o save_v faith_n it_o will_v make_v tender_a heart_n bleed_v to_o see_v so_o many_o mistake_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o their_o faith_n there_o be_v some_o who_o say_v they_o have_v faith_n all_o their_o day_n o_o that_o you_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o lamentable_a deceit_n and_o delusion_n that_o you_o be_v under_o and_o that_o learn_v this_o one_o lesson_n to_o wit_n concern_v faith_n in_o christ_n and_o other_o lesson_n will_v be_v to_o little_a or_o no_o purpose_n till_o this_o be_v learned_a we_o shall_v not_o insist_v to_o speak_v at_o large_a of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n but_o only_o in_o a_o plain_a way_n glance_n at_o what_o this_o great_a duty_n be_v that_o be_v require_v of_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v believe_v in_o christ_n saving_o or_o save_v faith_n for_o no_o other_o thing_n will_v hold_v off_o the_o complaint_n against_o you_o you_o will_v be_v complain_v of_o though_o you_o will_v believe_v with_o all_o other_o faith_n therefore_o it_o be_v this_o faith_n that_o be_v here_o mean_v that_o we_o may_v come_v the_o soon_o to_o that_o which_o we_o will_v be_v at_o we_o shall_v premit_fw-la two_n or_o three_o word_n first_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o believe_v here_o we_o presuppose_v these_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o clear_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n and_o capacitate_v we_o to_o believe_v though_o they_o be_v not_o save_v faith_n as_o namely_o 1._o that_o the_o offer_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v come_v to_o people_n that_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n be_v hold_v out_o to_o they_o that_o it_o be_v tell_v they_o that_o there_o be_v a_o way_n for_o a_o sinner_n justification_n through_o christ_n jesus_n and_o that_o sinner_n may_v be_v accept_v before_o god_n on_o his_o account_n or_o through_o he_o there_o must_v also_o 2._o be_v a_o understanding_n of_o this_o a_o conceive_n in_o the_o judgement_n what_o it_o be_v folk_n can_v believe_v except_o they_o hear_v and_o understand_v what_o they_o hear_v in_o so_o far_o as_o distinct_o to_o fix_v their_o faith_n on_o the_o thing_n know_v they_o must_v know_v and_o understand_v the_o mediator_n fullness_n the_o covenant_n freeness_n and_o the_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n to_o make_v christ_n they_o yea_o 3._o it_o be_v necessary_a there_o be_v some_o acquaintance_n with_o our_o own_o condition_n as_o that_o we_o be_v natural_o under_o sin_n that_o we_o be_v lose_v and_o under_o the_o curse_n sick_a and_o utter_o unable_a and_o even_o desperate_a to_o get_v ourselves_o recover_v by_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o or_o by_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o can_v do_v of_o ourselves_o that_o we_o be_v for_o ever_o undo_v if_o we_o get_v not_o a_o saviour_n that_o our_o mouth_n may_v be_v stop_v 4._o not_o only_o must_v we_o know_v this_o but_o it_o be_v necessary_a there_o be_v a_o historical_a faith_n of_o it_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v fullness_n and_o jesus_n christ_n as_o hold_v out_o in_o the_o promise_n for_o obtain_v of_o life_n and_o salvation_n through_o he_o so_o that_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v lie_v still_o under_o its_o conviction_n and_o know_v it_o can_v have_v life_n but_o by_o rest_v on_o christ_n and_o hear_v that_o there_o be_v a_o sufficiency_n in_o he_o for_o up_o make_v of_o all_o its_o want_n than_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n prevail_v with_o the_o soul_n to_o cast_v itself_o over_o on_o he_o for_o obtain_v of_o life_n and_o of_o every_o other_o thing_n needful_a it_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o embrace_v and_o br_n of_o a_o lose_a sinner_n from_o the_o serious_a apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o naughtiness_n and_o undo_v estate_n to_o cast_v himself_o over_o on_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o life_n through_o he_o second_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o faith_n we_o will_v premit_fw-la this_o that_o even_o this_o true_a and_o save_v faith_n which_o be_v not_o only_o in_o kind_a true_a that_o be_v such_o as_o have_v a_o real_a be_v but_o be_v save_v may_v be_v consider_v in_o its_o different_a act_n or_o act_n for_o its_o different_a needs_o or_o necessity_n though_o the_o covenant_n be_v the_o account_n on_o which_o we_o go_v to_o he_o and_o rest_n on_o he_o even_o as_o a_o conscientious_a duty_n be_v that_o which_o flow_v from_o a_o command_n as_o obedience_n to_o it_o so_o one_o of_o the_o main_a thing_n that_o qualify_v this_o faith_n be_v a_o receive_v christ_n as_o christ_n or_o as_o he_o be_v hold_v out_o in_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v therefore_o well_o put_v in_o the_o description_n give_v of_o faith_n in_o the_o catechism_n and_o it_o be_v call_v a_o believe_v on_o he_o who_o the_o father_n have_v send_v which_o be_v not_o to_o believe_v on_o christ_n simple_o but_o as_o he_o be_v hold_v out_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n presumption_n may_v look_v on_o christ_n and_o his_o fullness_n and_o few_o or_o none_o will_v ready_o dare_v to_o give_v he_o a_o direct_a and_o downright_a refusal_n or_o to_o reject_v he_o profess_o and_o avowed_o when_o they_o hear_v of_o such_o happiness_n that_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o he_o but_o that_o to_o do_v but_o to_o apply_v christ_n and_o to_o count_v he_o their_o own_o at_o the_o very_a first_o but_o through_o their_o not_o exercise_v faith_n on_o the_o word_n of_o promise_n they_o miss_v and_o his_o fullness_n as_o receive_v in_o the_o word_n and_o offer_v by_o god_n in_o his_o word_n faith_n take_v god_n faithfulness_n in_o his_o word_n and_o lay_v hold_v on_o he_o by_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o thing_n that_o make_v hâ—ppy_a but_o god_n faithful_a promise_n be_v the_o right_n by_o which_o we_o get_v a_o title_n to_o that_o thing_n we_o will_v never_o love_v nor_o like_a of_o that_o faith_n that_o know_v not_o the_o use_n of_o the_o word_n that_o betake_v itself_o to_o christ_n or_o the_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n but_o meddle_v not_o nor_o have_v any_o deal_n with_o the_o word_n that_o hold_v they_o out_o when_o as_o it_o be_v only_o this_o word_n that_o give_v we_o warrant_n to_o expect_v that_o his_o fullness_n shall_v be_v make_v forthcoming_a for_o our_o up-making_a and_o for_o the_o supply_n of_o all_o our_o need_n many_o desire_n and_o expect_v good_a of_o god_n but_o get_v it_o not_o because_o their_o expectation_n be_v not_o found_v on_o his_o word_n and_o god_n faithfulness_n in_o his_o word_n be_v not_o close_v withal_o in_o a_o word_n i_o will_v have_v you_o to_o think_v that_o faith_n be_v neither_o a_o easy_a nor_o a_o insuperable_o difficult_a thing_n but_o that_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o go_v wrong_n and_o difficult_a to_o go_v right_a and_o that_o without_o god_n special_a and_o powerful_a guide_n you_o can_v believe_v nor_o exercise_v faith_n nor_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o dependence_n on_o he_o that_o you_o may_v be_v help_v to_o make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o build_v upon_o he_o that_o you_o may_v not_o slip_v nor_o stumble_v and_o fall_v on_o the_o stumbling-stone_n lay_v in_o zion_n on_o which_o so_o many_o fall_n every_o day_n and_o break_v themselves_o to_o piece_n sermon_n vi._n isaiah_n liii_o i_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v if_o it_o be_v not_o record_v in_o the_o infallible_a scripture_n of_o truth_n we_o will_v hardly_o believe_v that_o there_o can_v be_v so_o much_o powerful_a and_o sweet_a preach_v of_o the_o most_o excellent_a instrument_n that_o ever_o be_v employ_v and_o yet_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v so_o little_a fruit_n follow_v on_o it_o who_o will_v believe_v that_o isaiah_n so_o excellent_a so_o sweet_a and_o so_o evangelic_n a_o prophet_n shall_v have_v preach_v so_o many_o pleasant_a plain_a and_o powerful_a sermon_n to_o a_o people_n from_o the_o lord_n and_o yet_o that_o he_o shall_v have_v so_o many_o sad_a complaint_n as_o he_o have_v chap._n 6_o 28_o and_o 58._o that_o he_o shall_v be_v put_v to_o bring_v in_o the_o lord_n say_v all_o the_o day_n long_o have_v i_o stretch_v out_o my_o hand_n to_o a_o rebellious_a people_n chap._n 65._o and_o that_o here_o himself_o shall_v have_v it_o to_o say_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n it_o be_v scarce_o one_o man_n here_o or_o there_o that_o have_v save_o believe_v on_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n that_o now_o we_o will_v speak_v to_o and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a though_o a_o very_a clear_a truth_n the_o doctrine_n be_v this_o that_o there_o may_v be_v much_o powerful_a preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o unbelief_n general_o among_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o or_o take_v it_o with_o dependence_n on_o the_o former_a two_o namely_o 1._o that_o the_o great_a work_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o propose_v and_o make_v christ_n know_v to_o a_o people_n 2._o that_o the_o great_a duty_n of_o a_o people_n that_o have_v christ_n propose_v to_o they_o be_v to_o believe_v on_o he_o then_o this_o 3._o follow_v on_o the_o back_n of_o these_o that_o a_o people_n may_v have_v christ_n propose_v to_o they_o bring_v to_o their_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o though_o it_o be_v but_o believe_v that_o be_v call_v for_o from_o they_o yet_o that_o can_v be_v obtain_v from_o most_o of_o they_o this_o gospel-duty_n of_o believe_v be_v often_o slight_v by_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v clear_o hold_v forth_o here_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n we_o have_v call_v for_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n among_o the_o multitude_n of_o hearer_n to_o get_v one_o that_o believe_v save_o to_o make_v out_o and_o prove_v this_o a_o little_a further_o we_o will_v consider_v this_o complaint_n with_o these_o aggravation_n of_o it_o which_o will_v make_v it_o the_o more_o clear_a and_o so_o the_o more_o to_o be_v wonder_v at_o as_o 1._o these_o of_o who_o the_o complaint_n be_v make_v it_o be_v not_o heathen_n but_o god_n own_o people_n as_o the_o lord_n complain_v psal_n 81_o 10_o 11._o my_o people_n will_v not_o hearken_v to_o my_o voice_n and_o israel_n will_v have_v none_o of_o i_o our_o lord_n jesus_n complain_v of_o jerusalem_n matth._n 23._o at_o the_o end_n o_o jerusalem_n jerusalem_n how_o often_o will_v i_o have_v gather_v thou_o and_o thou_o will_v not_o that_o the_o lord_n be_v own_o profess_v people_n shall_v not_o believe_v nor_o receive_v the_o report_n that_o be_v make_v of_o he_o heighten_v the_o complaint_n and_o aggravate_v their_o guilt_n shall_v their_o eye_n be_v blind_a and_o their_o ear_n heavy_a etc._n etc._n and_o chap._n 28.9_o who_o shall_v i_o teach_v doctrine_n they_o that_o be_v wean_v from_o the_o milk_n and_o draw_v from_o the_o breast_n precept_n must_v be_v upon_o precept_n and_o line_n upon_o line_n here_o a_o little_a and_o there_o a_o little_a and_o chap._n 65.2_o all_o day_n long_o i_o have_v streatched_a out_o my_o hand_n to_o a_o rebellious_a people_n and_o here_o again_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n much_o and_o long_a or_o many_o year_n preach_v much_o plain_a and_o powerful_a preach_v and_o wrath_n but_o christ_n sacrifice_n alone_o and_o will_v or_o can_v foulkes_n expect_v that_o for_o which_o they_o have_v no_o promise_n the_o scripture_n be_v plain_a and_o peremptory_a in_o this_o as_o namely_o act_v 4.14_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n whereby_o a_o sinner_n can_v be_v save_v but_o by_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n he_o be_v the_o door_n joh._n 10._o the_o and_o unsignificant_a as_o to_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n or_o the_o obtain_n of_o his_o pardon_n 2._o upon_o the_o other_o side_n it_o point_v out_o the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n sacrifice_n and_o of_o the_o betake_v of_o ourselves_o to_o it_o for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o god_n justice_n if_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o remove_n of_o wrath_n there_o be_v then_o sure_a a_o necessity_n of_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o his_o sacrifice_n the_o 1._o of_o these_o uses_n speak_v to_o two_o sort_n of_o person_n with_o who_o the_o word_n of_o god_n have_v no_o weight_n and_o who_o in_o effect_n think_v to_o satisfy_v god_n with_o nothing_o 1._o a_o profane_a graceless_a secure_a company_n who_o because_o god_n keep_v silence_n be_v dispose_v to_o think_v that_o he_o be_v like_o themselves_o and_o that_o he_o will_v never_o pursue_v a_o quarrel_n against_o they_o much_o like_a to_o that_o man_n speak_v of_o deut._n 29.18_o 19_o who_o say_v in_o his_o heart_n he_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o he_o walk_v in_o the_o imagination_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n add_v drunknness_n to_o sinner_n whence_o come_v this_o even_o from_o their_o suppose_n that_o there_o be_v another_o way_n to_o heaven_n than_o god_n have_v chalk_v out_o they_o think_v they_o may_v be_v save_v though_o they_o never_o betake_v themselves_o to_o christ_n for_o union_n with_o he_o but_o whether_o shall_v their_o sentence_n or_o god_n stand_n there_o be_v a_o day_n come_v when_o you_o shall_v know_v you_o say_v you_o shall_v have_v peace_n but_o god_n say_v no_o why_o so_o because_o you_o never_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n you_o have_v never_o so_o much_o as_o a_o form_n nor_o any_o the_o least_o gust_n of_o religion_n but_o be_v and_o be_v still_o as_o senseless_a as_o the_o stone_n in_o the_o wall_n what_o do_v you_o think_v will_v become_v of_o this_o god_n urge_v as_o it_o weet_v the_o offers_z of_o christ_n upon_o you_o and_o you_o still_o slight_v he_o he_o tell_v you_o that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o union_n with_o he_o else_o you_o shall_v never_o see_v heaven_n and_o you_o lie_v still_o at_o a_o distance_n from_o he_o and_o yet_o will_v needs_o hope_v for_o heaven_n but_o alas_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o

priest_n heb._n 7.26_o such_o a_o high_a priest_n become_v we_o who_o be_v holy_a harmless_a separate_v from_o sinner_n and_o make_v high_a than_o the_o heaven_n and_o then_o follow_v who_o need_v though_o he_o suffer_v in_o the_o flesh_n yet_o it_o be_v the_o same_o person_n that_o be_v god_n that_o suffer_v 2_o he_o be_v the_o altar_n by_o which_o his_o sacrifice_n receive_v a_o special_a efficacy_n virtue_n value_n and_o commendation_n as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o altar_n sanctify_v the_o offering_n so_o christ_n jesus_n according_a to_o his_o godhead_n be_v the_o altar_n which_o do_v put_v a_o special_a excellency_n on_o his_o suffering_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v of_o such_o worth_a and_o value_n therefore_o heb._n 9.14_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o through_o the_o eternal_a to_o look_v on_o it_o as_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n proper_o so_o take_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n 2_o this_o serve_v to_o clear_v some_o truth_n concern_v our_o lord_n jesus_n his_o sacrifice_n for_o we_o must_v consider_v it_o as_o satisfy_v to_o justice_n and_o meritorious_o procure_v the_o escape_n from_o wrath_n and_o salvation_n of_o they_o for_o who_o he_o interpose_v it_o be_v from_o the_o gross_a ignorance_n or_o from_o the_o wicked_a denial_n of_o this_o ground_n that_o the_o damnable_a denier_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n do_v also_o deny_v the_o propriety_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n on_o earth_n and_o bind_v it_o to_o heaven_n whereas_o it_o be_v bound_v to_o his_o death_n though_o by_o virtue_n of_o this_o one_o offer_v he_o continues_z to_o intercede_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n 3_o it_o teach_v sinner_n what_o be_v the_o native_a use_n which_o they_o shall_v make_v of_o this_o sacrifice_n they_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o the_o only_a sacrifice_n to_o prevent_v eternal_a death_n and_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n anâ—_n so_o it_o demonstrat_n to_o we_o that_o either_o jesâ—s_v christ_n must_v be_v receive_v by_o faith_n and_o his_o sacrifice_n rest_v on_o or_o we_o must_v resolve_v to_o meet_v with_o wrath_n and_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n ourselves_o in_o our_o own_o person_n 4_o it_o serve_v to_o clear_v we_o anent_o the_o way_n and_o tract_n of_o grace_n to_o wit_n how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o our_o lord_n who_o be_v innocent_a and_o without_o sin_n be_v so_o bruise_v and_o put_v to_o grief_n he_o come_v to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o sist_v himself_o in_o our_o room_n as_o our_o cautioner_n as_o a_o sin-offering_a for_o we_o it_o will_v doubtless_o gnash_v many_o question_n and_o doubt_n that_o arise_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n if_o it_o be_v well_o understand_v they_o may_v say_v we_o shall_v have_v be_v in_o such_o and_o such_o a_o sad_a sacrifice_n for_o sin_n and_o be_v so_o accept_v of_o god_n in_o their_o room_n so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o right_a uptake_n of_o christ_n death_n be_v a_o matter_n of_o no_o little_a moment_n christ_n crucify_v be_v the_o very_a substance_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o help_v much_o to_o keep_v alive_a the_o impression_n of_o our_o sinfulness_n and_o of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o give_v we_o direction_n how_o to_o escape_v wrath_n by_o put_v he_o in_o our_o room_n there_o be_v nothing_o wherein_o folk_n more_o ready_o miscarry_v in_o make_v of_o their_o peace_n with_o god_n then_o in_o not_o make_v the_o right_a use_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o sacrifice_n and_o death_n some_o pray_v for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n from_o he_o and_o not_o for_o he_o or_o for_o his_o sake_n when_o they_o know_v not_o what_o they_o be_v say_v as_o we_o hint_v at_o before_o some_o pray_v for_o strength_n from_o he_o for_o duty_n that_o they_o may_v do_v for_o themselves_o not_o consider_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o his_o interpose_v in_o our_o room_n and_o by_o faith_n close_v with_o he_o under_o that_o consideration_n as_o fist_v himself_o at_o the_o bar_n of_o justice_n and_o as_o be_v content_a to_o be_v a_o sin-offering_a and_o the_o lord_n accept_v of_o he_o in_o the_o room_n of_o elect_a sinner_n this_o be_v well_o consider_v give_v to_o faith_n much_o clearness_n how_o to_o take_v he_o up_o when_o the_o soul_n honest_o aim_v to_o partake_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o suffering_n 2_o for_o clear_v this_o a_o little_a further_o we_o will_v know_v that_o there_o be_v as_o divine_n observe_v four_o or_o five_o way_n how_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v or_o how_o christ_n in_o procure_v by_o his_o death_n redemption_n peace_n and_o pardon_v to_o sinner_n be_v hold_v forth_o in_o scripture_n 1._o he_o purchase_v redemption_n and_o pardon_v of_o sin_n meritorious_o or_o he_o merit_v it_o by_o his_o death_n this_o respect_v the_o value_n of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o satisfaction_n so_o that_o if_o we_o consider_v christ_n in_o himself_o and_o the_o elect_a in_o themselves_o his_o death_n
the_o majesty_n of_o god_n it_o will_v say_v this_o to_o you_o let_v not_o our_o lord_n jesus_n rue_v of_o his_o suffering_n for_o as_o many_o as_o hear_v of_o this_o offer_n and_o do_v not_o credit_v he_o with_o their_o soul_n they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o make_v he_o repent_v that_o ever_o he_o become_v man_n and_o suffer_v so_o much_o when_o he_o be_v thus_o shift_v and_o unkind_o requite_v by_o they_o to_o who_o he_o make_v the_o offer_n and_o this_o be_v very_a home_n and_o urgent_a press_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o make_v use_n of_o he_o when_o such_o a_o argument_n be_v make_v use_n of_o for_o thus_o it_o stand_v with_o you_o and_o his_o offer_n speak_v this_o either_o make_v use_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o soul-travel_n for_o save_v of_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v satisfy_v or_o if_o you_o slight_v he_o you_o not_o only_o destroy_v and_o cause_n to_o perish_v your_o own_o soul_n but_o you_o refuse_v to_o satisfy_v chirst_n for_o his_o soul-travel_n and_o do_v what_o in_o you_o lie_v to_o mar_v and_o defeat_v the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o be_v not_o this_o a_o great_a and_o strong_o push_v dilemma_n the_o result_n of_o your_o receive_n or_o reject_v of_o christ_n will_v be_v this_o if_o you_o receive_v he_o you_o satisfy_v he_o if_o you_o reject_v he_o you_o say_v you_o be_v not_o content_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o what_o can_v be_v expect_v to_o come_v of_o it_o when_o christ_n suffer_v so_o much_o and_o when_o all_o that_o be_v crave_v of_o you_o be_v to_o make_v use_n of_o he_o and_o when_o it_o be_v tell_v that_o that_o will_v satisfy_v he_o and_o yet_o that_o be_v refuse_v what_o a_o horrible_a challenge_n will_v this_o be_v in_o the_o great_a day_n and_o therefore_o to_o press_v this_o use_v a_o little_a we_o shall_v show_v you_o here_o 1._o what_o it_o be_v that_o we_o exhort_v you_o to_o and_o 2._o what_o be_v the_o force_n of_o this_o motive_n 1._o we_o will_v commend_v to_o you_o in_o general_a that_o you_o will_v endeavour_v the_o salvation_n of_o your_o own_o soul_n this_o be_v it_o he_o cry_v to_o you_o prov._n 1.22_o how_o long_o you_o simple_a one_o you_o will_v bring_v no_o other_o argument_n before_o god_n to_o plead_v upon_o for_o your_o peace_n with_o he_o but_o this_o and_o that_o you_o will_v aim_v at_o holiness_n as_o a_o fruit_n of_o his_o death_n he_o have_v purchase_v a_o peculiar_a people_n to_o himself_o to_o be_v zealous_a of_o good_a work_n as_o it_o be_v tit._n 2.14_o and_o that_o you_o will_v aim_v to_o do_v holy_a duty_n by_o his_o strengthen_n of_o you_o and_o that_o you_o will_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o he_o which_o be_v your_o victory_n over_o the_o world_n and_o the_o very_a soul_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o be_v be_v ignorant_a oâ—_n that_o which_o god_n will_v accept_v for_o righteousness_n they_o think_v to_o patch_v up_o one_o of_o their_o own_o and_o so_o be_v it_o still_o for_o some_o hope_n to_o come_v speed_n by_o their_o prayer_n other_o think_v to_o come_v speed_n by_o their_o good_a heart_n to_o god_n a_o three_o sort_n put_v in_o their_o good_a work_n if_o not_o in_o express_a word_n come_v i_o be_v alive_a that_o be_v before_o it_o come_v to_o he_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o its_o spiritual_a meaning_n and_o broad_a extent_n of_o it_o while_o he_o be_v a_o pharisee_n he_o be_v you_o sometime_o the_o necessity_n of_o repentance_n and_o of_o your_o be_v humble_v and_o that_o you_o shall_v deny_v your_o own_o righteousness_n and_o betake_v you_o to_o christ_n but_o except_o there_o be_v knowledge_n of_o your_o unrighteousness_n it_o be_v as_o if_o we_o shall_v bid_v you_o wash_v where_o there_o be_v no_o spot_n see_v 5._o look_v so_o reward_v to_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n which_o be_v necessary_a though_o not_o to_o justify_v you_o yet_o that_o you_o may_v live_v as_o it_o become_v justify_v person_n though_o not_o to_o make_v your_o peace_n yet_o to_o glorify_v god_n and_o to_o keep_v up_o friendship_n with_o he_o now_o can_v any_o know_v or_o do_v duty_n who_o be_v ignorant_a hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o some_o hazard_n on_o sin_n take_v live_v a_o considerable_a number_n of_o year_n stranger_n to_o the_o advantage_n that_o be_v to_o be_v get_v by_o he_o through_o their_o want_n of_o knowledge_n therefore_o john_n 4._o christ_n say_v to_o the_o samaritan_n woman_n if_o thou_o have_v know_v who_o it_o be_v that_o ask_v it_o of_o thou_o thou_o will_v have_v give_v he_o drink_v and_o he_o shall_v have_v give_v thou_o live_a water_n distance_n from_o christ_n because_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o literal_a knowledge_n or_o historical_a faith_n of_o his_o worth_n the_o uses_n be_v three_o 1._o take_v it_o for_o grant_v if_o ever_o you_o will_v see_v the_o face_n of_o god_n that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o knowledge_n for_o knowledge_n be_v a_o piece_n of_o god_n image_n as_o well_o as_o holiness_n and_o knowledge_n be_v command_v as_o well_o as_o holiness_n knowledge_n be_v place_v in_o the_o first_o man_n adam_n as_o well_o as_o holiness_n and_o when_o we_o be_v renew_v after_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o conformity_n to_o the_o second_o adam_n we_o be_v renew_v in_o knowledge_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o knowledge_n be_v a_o mean_a of_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n of_o repentance_n and_o of_o holiness_n and_o if_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v needful_a by_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o mid_n in_o order_n to_o a_o end_n if_o obedience_n to_o a_o command_n or_o if_o the_o thing_n itself_o that_o be_v to_o be_v know_v be_v needful_a than_o knowledge_n must_v be_v needful_a it_o be_v true_a we_o will_v beware_v of_o extremity_n here_o as_o either_o to_o say_v on_o the_o one_o hand_n that_o their_o must_v be_v such_o a_o high_a degree_n of_o knowledge_n for_o in_o the_o speculative_a part_n of_o knowledge_n to_o speak_v so_o reprobat_n may_v go_v beyond_o believer_n or_o upon_o the_o other_o hand_n to_o think_v that_o knowledge_n be_v enough_o and_o that_o there_o need_v no_o more_o but_o knowledge_n as_o alace_o many_o do_v rest_n upon_o their_o knowledge_n and_o therefore_o we_o will_v beware_v of_o separate_a these_o two_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v ask_v here_o what_o knowledge_n be_v requisite_a to_o justification_n i_o will_v speak_v a_o word_n to_o this_o question_n not_o so_o much_o for_o satisfy_v of_o curiosity_n but_o for_o your_o instruction_n who_o be_v more_o ignorant_a and_o to_o show_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o to_o give_v you_o a_o short_a view_n of_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v know_v about_o this_o matter_n and_o therefore_o 1._o you_o must_v know_v god_n that_o justify_v you_o ere_o you_o can_v be_v justify_v as_o it_o be_v john_n 17.3_o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a to_o know_v thou_o the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o he_o who_o thou_o have_v send_v jesus_n will_v know_v yourselves_o and_o what_o may_v be_v charge_v on_o you_o before_o god_n can_v man_n carry_v right_o before_o a_o judge_n or_o before_o a_o judicatory_a if_o they_o know_v not_o how_o it_o stand_v with_o they_o and_o this_o will_v lead_v you_o to_o know_v the_o state_n and_o case_n wherein_o you_o be_v make_v at_o first_o and_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o god_n make_v with_o man_n at_o the_o beginning_n when_o he_o give_v to_o he_o the_o promise_n of_o life_n upon_o condition_n of_o obedience_n and_o that_o you_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o curse_n due_a for_o the_o breach_n of_o that_o law_n and_o covenant_n else_o you_o will_v never_o know_v your_o hazard_n and_o know_v the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o covenant_n of_o work_n it_o will_v make_v you_o through_o god_n blessing_n to_o seek_v after_o justification_n which_o otherways_o you_o will_v never_o do_v and_o so_o you_o be_v to_o know_v that_o the_o first_o covenant_n be_v break_v by_o adam_n
