and_o these_o especial_o be_v four_o i._o pride_n of_o heart_n a_o vile_a affection_n whereby_o we_o seek_v our_o own_o praise_n and_o glory_n and_o not_o god_n this_o be_v natural_a and_o so_o the_o more_o hardly_o discern_v but_o while_o it_o be_v nourish_v god_n glory_n be_v neglect_v and_o therefore_o when_o we_o desire_v to_o glorify_v god_n name_n we_o must_v acknowledge_v and_o bewail_v this_o inward_a corruption_n ii_o want_n of_o zeal_n coldness_n of_o heart_n towards_o god_n this_o be_v a_o inward_a corruption_n which_o debase_v the_o lord_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o take_v away_o that_o high_a esteem_n of_o god_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o us._n this_o cause_v we_o to_o omit_v to_o glorify_v god_n and_o to_o defend_v the_o cause_n of_o god_n and_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o name_n when_o wicked_a man_n disgrace_n and_o reproach_n the_o same_o he_o that_o have_v any_o insight_n into_o his_o own_o estate_n may_v perceive_v this_o in_o himself_o now_o it_o mighty_o hinder_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v unfeigned_o bewail_v it_o in_o our_o own_o heart_n iii_o hardness_n of_o heart_n whereby_o we_o be_v hinder_v from_o the_o true_a knowledge_n duty_n thereof_o be_v they_o never_o so_o base_a if_o they_o be_v sanctify_v by_o prayer_n and_o do_v to_o god_n glory_n be_v good_a work_n example_n a_o man_n be_v call_v to_o be_v a_o shepherd_n and_o do_v willing_o accept_v thereof_o now_o though_o the_o call_n be_v but_o base_a and_o mean_a yet_o the_o work_n thereof_o be_v do_v in_o obedience_n to_o god_n for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o master_n be_v good_a work_n yea_o as_o good_a in_o their_o kind_n as_o the_o best_a work_n of_o the_o high_a calling_n and_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v of_o all_o lawful_a calling_n and_o the_o work_v thereof_o be_v they_o never_o so_o base_a for_o god_n judge_v not_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o work_n by_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o matter_n whereabout_o it_o be_v occupy_v but_o by_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o doer_n this_o point_n must_v be_v learned_a for_o the_o papist_n conceit_n do_v stick_v fast_o in_o man_n heart_n that_o there_o be_v no_o good_a work_n but_o the_o build_n the_o truth_n that_o good_a work_n be_v necessary_a not_o as_o cause_n of_o salvation_n or_o justification_n but_o as_o inseparable_a consequent_n of_o save_v faith_n in_o christ_n whereby_o we_o be_v justify_v and_o save_v or_o as_o a_o way_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o go_v to_o a_o place_n the_o dignity_n of_o good_a work_n work_n be_v express_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v call_v good_a now_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o law_n and_o the_o rigour_n thereof_o and_o so_o they_o be_v sin_n because_o they_o answer_v not_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v for_o there_o be_v two_o degree_n of_o sin_n rebellion_n which_o be_v action_n flat_o against_o the_o law_n and_o defect_n when_o a_o man_n do_v those_o thing_n that_o the_o law_n command_v but_o yet_o fail_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v and_o so_o be_v man_n very_a best_a work_n sin_n second_o consider_v good_a work_n as_o do_v by_o a_o person_n regenerate_v and_o reconcile_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o so_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o for_o in_o christ_n the_o want_v thereof_o be_v cover_v but_o here_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o romish_a doctrine_n â—7_n which_o teach_v that_o good_a work_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o good_a that_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o they_o their_o reason_n be_v many_o to_o prove_v this_o point_n but_o they_o have_v be_v heretofore_o confute_v first_o they_o say_v good_a work_n have_v god_n for_o their_o author_n and_o therefore_o be_v perfect_o good_a answ._n this_o be_v true_a if_o he_o alone_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o but_o man_n be_v another_o author_n thereof_o from_o who_o they_o take_v their_o imperfection_n they_o say_v again_o that_o here_o they_o be_v call_v good_a but_o if_o they_o have_v any_o sin_n in_o they_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v evil_a for_o every_o sin_n be_v perfect_o evil_a ans._n where_o sin_n be_v unremit_v it_o be_v perfect_o evil_a but_o when_o it_o be_v pardon_v in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n it_o be_v as_o though_o it_o be_v not_o three_o they_o object_n that_o if_o good_a work_n be_v sinful_a than_o they_o must_v not_o be_v do_v and_o hereupon_o they_o say_v that_o by_o our_o doctrine_n man_n be_v bind_v to_o abstain_v from_o all_o good_a work_n answer_n that_o which_o be_v evil_a must_v not_o be_v do_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v evil_a now_o good_a work_n be_v not_o simple_o and_o absolute_o evil_a they_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o in_o we_o in_o part_n come_v from_o grace_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v do_v because_o god_n require_v they_o at_o our_o hand_n and_o for_o the_o imperfection_n of_o they_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o pardon_n in_o our_o saviour_n christ._n and_o here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v just_o tax_v the_o proud_a sacrament_n now_o consider_v set_v prayer_n be_v god_n ordinance_n and_o the_o imperfection_n of_o man_n require_v it_o and_o the_o same_o have_v be_v so_o long_o use_v in_o former_a age_n i_o doubt_v not_o to_o affirm_v the_o same_o to_o be_v both_o profitable_a and_o necessary_a whereby_o we_o may_v see_v how_o blind_a and_o rash_a they_o be_v who_o term_n set_v 48._o prayer_n a_o abominable_a idol_n and_o as_o loathsome_a unto_o god_n as_o swine_n â—lesh_n be_v to_o the_o jew_n these_o be_v loathsome_a and_o unreverend_a term_n but_o that_o we_o may_v know_v their_o folly_n and_o error_n the_o better_a let_v we_o here_o scan_v their_o principal_a reason_n against_o set_a prayer_n and_o they_o be_v two_o i._o to_o read_v a_o sermon_n pen_v by_o a_o other_o be_v no_o preach_v and_o therefore_o to_o repeat_v a_o set_a prayer_n be_v no_o prayer_n ans._n the_o reason_n be_v naught_o for_o in_o read_v a_o pen_a sermon_n a_o man_n can_v express_v the_o gift_n of_o pprophecy_n but_o in_o read_v a_o set_a prayer_n he_o may_v show_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n as_o namely_o a_o touch_v heart_n for_o his_o sin_n a_o hunger_a desire_n after_o grace_n and_o a_o thankful_a heart_n for_o god_n mercy_n and_o herein_o do_v prayer_n consist_v and_o not_o in_o the_o word_n ii_o reason_n we_o must_v pray_v free_o as_o the_o spirit_n move_v we_o and_o therefore_o to_o use_v set_v form_n of_o prayer_n be_v to_o stint_v and_o quench_v the_o good_a motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n ans._n this_o reason_n be_v somewhat_o if_o every_o one_o receive_v such_o a_o portion_n and_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o do_v enable_v he_o hereunto_o but_o see_v in_o this_o life_n we_o have_v but_o the_o first_o fruit_n thereof_o and_o not_o the_o ten_o as_o one_o say_v we_o be_v to_o use_v all_o good_a help_n to_o make_v supply_n unto_o our_o want_n for_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o holy_a duty_n we_o be_v like_a unto_o a_o man_n that_o be_v new_o recover_v of_o some_o grievous_a sickness_n who_o can_v walk_v in_o his_o chamber_n yet_o not_o by_o himself_o alone_o but_o either_o with_o his_o staff_n or_o lean_v upon_o a_o other_o man_n shoulder_n even_o so_o we_o be_v weak_a and_o feeble_a in_o prayer_n have_v need_n of_o the_o help_n of_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n to_o hold_v up_o our_o feeble_a hand_n unto_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v requisite_a for_o man_n to_o use_v set_v form_n of_o prayer_n at_o least_o for_o the_o matter_n and_o order_n thereof_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n yea_o and_o many_o time_n it_o be_v needful_a for_o some_o to_o use_v set_v prayer_n for_o word_n for_o many_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n in_o their_o heart_n want_v utterance_n to_o express_v it_o and_o if_o they_o may_v not_o use_v set_v form_n of_o prayer_n they_o shall_v be_v deprive_v of_o many_o great_a comfort_n especial_o when_o they_o pray_v with_o other_o so_o that_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v right_o prepare_v thereto_o set_v prayer_n do_v not_o quench_v but_o help_v the_o weak_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n both_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o tongue_n by_o this_o than_o we_o see_v that_o neither_o our_o church_n nor_o any_o other_o where_o a_o set_a form_n of_o divine_a service_n be_v establish_v be_v therefore_o to_o be_v blame_v because_o the_o same_o be_v both_o necessary_a and_o profitable_a second_o here_o we_o see_v that_o it_o be_v meet_v and_o necessary_a we_o shall_v have_v some_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n in_o our_o heart_n according_a to_o our_o peculiar_a estate_n whereby_o we_o may_v express_v unto_o god_n our_o particular_a want_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v join_v with_o endeavour_n to_o glorify_v god_n as_o both_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o christian_a experience_n do_v full_o witness_v which_o must_v be_v well_o observe_v name_n but_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n so_o as_o hereby_o the_o party_n may_v know_v himself_o to_o have_v offend_v and_o also_o say_v that_o he_o be_v reprove_v of_o god_n himself_o rather_o then_o of_o man_n this_o aught_o all_o superior_n to_o practice_n in_o correct_v and_o admonish_v their_o inferior_n they_o must_v not_o go_v thereto_o in_o rage_n but_o in_o long_a suffering_n nor_o rude_o but_o with_o doctrine_n that_o the_o party_n offend_v may_v see_v his_o fault_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o duty_n of_o brotherly_a correction_n vers._n 6._o give_v not_o that_o which_o mean_v by_o swine_n for_o the_o first_o by_o that_o which_o be_v holy_a we_o must_v understand_v first_o and_o proper_o the_o word_n of_o god_n write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n in_o his_o right_n and_o holy_a use_n that_o be_v read_v dispense_v and_o preach_v and_o consequent_o by_o holy_a thing_n be_v mean_v the_o sacrament_n and_o christian_a admonition_n god_n word_n be_v call_v thing_n a_o holy_a thing_n for_o sundry_a cause_n but_o principal_o for_o these_o two_o first_o because_o it_o be_v holy_a in_o itself_o and_o second_o in_o effect_n &_o operation_n it_o be_v holy_a in_o itself_o because_o it_o be_v set_v apart_o by_o god_n to_o be_v in_o the_o church_n in_o stead_n of_o his_o own_o lively_a voice_n unto_o his_o people_n for_o the_o reucal_a and_o determine_v of_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v believe_v and_o do_v in_o his_o church_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n god_n himself_o speak_v by_o a_o lively_a voice_n unto_o the_o patriarch_n and_o after_o the_o give_v of_o the_o law_n he_o give_v answer_v to_o the_o high_a priest_n at_o the_o mercy-seat_n &_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o inferior_a to_o they_o though_o we_o want_v that_o lively_a voice_n for_o we_o have_v the_o write_a word_n in_o stead_n thereof_o which_o be_v answerable_a every_o way_n thereunto_o for_o look_v what_o the_o write_a word_n say_v be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o the_o lord_n from_o heaven_n shall_v speak_v by_o a_o lively_a voice_n and_o so_o consequent_o it_o be_v to_o we_o in_o stead_n of_o the_o ark_n of_o god_n a_o pledge_n of_o his_o presence_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v holy_a in_o itself_o second_o god_n word_n be_v holy_a in_o regard_n of_o operation_n for_o it_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o the_o spirit_n set_v apart_o by_o god_n himself_o to_o comfort_n of_o those_o that_o have_v as_o yet_o but_o grace_n the_o beginning_n of_o grace_n in_o small_a and_o weak_a measure_n they_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v for_o god_n have_v plenty_n of_o grace_n in_o store_n if_o they_o can_v but_o find_v and_o feel_v their_o want_n of_o grace_n and_o lament_v it_o unto_o god_n use_v the_o mean_n of_o the_o word_n &_o prayer_n to_o get_v supply_n here_o be_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o be_v the_o storehouse_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o grace_n three_o this_o serve_v for_o a_o good_a ground_n to_o confute_v sundry_a error_n as_o confute_v first_o the_o opinion_n of_o universal_a grace_n whereby_o some_o hold_n that_o every_o man_n may_v be_v save_v if_o he_o will_v for_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n without_o which_o none_o can_v be_v save_v be_v not_o universal_a but_o here_o make_v with_o restraint_n to_o those_o that_o ask_v according_a to_o god_n will_v which_o none_o can_v do_v without_o the_o spirit_n which_o must_v teach_v we_o to_o pray_v in_o faith_n without_o which_o we_o receive_v nothing_o from_o god_n jam._n 1._o 7._o second_o this_o overthrow_v the_o familistâ—_n fond_a conceit_n of_o anabaptist_n and_o familist_n which_o look_v for_o the_o spirit_n by_o revelation_n and_o not_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n but_o we_o must_v look_v to_o the_o mean_n in_o which_o god_n give_v the_o spirit_n and_o out_o of_o that_o mean_n we_o be_v more_o subject_n to_o the_o delusion_n of_o satan_n then_o to_o the_o operation_n 3._o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n three_o this_o also_o confute_v the_o error_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o teach_v that_o a_o man_n by_o the_o good_a use_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o nature_n may_v come_v to_o obtain_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o there_o be_v no_o large_a promise_n than_o this_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n where_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v promise_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n in_o faith_n which_o we_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n but_o by_o grace_n and_o beside_o when_o we_o ask_v in_o faith_n by_o grace_n this_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o we_o receive_v but_o only_o a_o discharge_n of_o our_o duty_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v whereupon_o follow_v the_o increase_n of_o grace_n yet_o no_o way_n of_o our_o merit_n but_o from_o god_n free_a mercy_n and_o his_o bounty_n verse_n 12._o therefore_o whatsoever_o you_o will_v that_o man_n shall_v do_v to_o you_o even_o so_o do_v you_o to_o they_o for_o this_o be_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n this_o verse_n contain_v the_o four_o part_n of_o this_o chapter_n concern_v equity_n sermon_n and_o justice_n and_o it_o consist_v of_o two_o branch_n a_o commandment_n whatsoever_o you_o will_v etc._n etc._n and_o a_o reason_n for_o this_o be_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n for_o the_o first_o the_o meaning_n the_o commandment_n be_v propound_v in_o a_o form_n of_o speech_n that_o have_v reference_n to_o some_o thing_n go_v before_o therefore_o whatsoever_o etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o it_o seem_v very_o hard_a that_o it_o shall_v depend_v either_o upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o prayer_n or_o of_o dispense_n the_o word_n or_o 〈◊〉_d of_o rash_a judgement_n why_o then_o be_v it_o say_v therefore_o etc._n etc._n some_o think_v it_o be_v to_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justice_n which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o five_o chapter_n but_o that_o be_v scarce_o probable_a because_o so_o many_o different_a point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v handle_v between_o other_o think_v that_o it_o do_v not_o depend_v of_o any_o thing_n that_o go_v before_o but_o that_o the_o word_n therefore_o do_v abound_v and_o this_o be_v more_o probable_a for_o such_o particle_n do_v sometime_o abound_v 〈◊〉_d joh._n 1._o 20_o he_o deny_v and_o say_v because_o â—_o i_o be_o not_o the_o christ_n where_o the_o word_n because_o do_v abound_v now_o though_o the_o word_n therefore_o do_v abound_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o without_o his_o use_n for_o it_o import_v that_o the_o doctrine_n here_o deliver_v be_v a_o special_a doctrine_n and_o a_o main_a conclusion_n infer_v upon_o diverse_a particular_a duty_n of_o justice_n before_o deliver_v in_o the_o whole_a sermon_n whatsoever_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o this_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v so_o for_o many_o desire_n and_o wish_v evil_a unto_o themselves_o as_o child_n that_o they_o may_v have_v their_o will_n to_o take_v their_o pleasure_n and_o not_o be_v hold_v in_o subjection_n unto_o their_o parent_n or_o hold_v to_o good_a education_n and_o so_o idle_a person_n wish_v evil_a unto_o themselves_o for_o they_o will_v not_o be_v set_v a_o work_n we_o be_v therefore_o to_o know_v that_o this_o must_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o evil_a wish_n but_o of_o a_o will_n and_o desire_v well_o order_v either_o by_o grace_n and_o according_a to_o the_o write_a word_n or_o at_o least_o by_o the_o light_n of_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o conscience_n so_o that_o christ_n meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v whatsoever_o thing_n either_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o conscience_n or_o by_o direction_n from_o god_n word_n you_o will_v wish_v that_o man_n shall_v do_v to_o you_o that_o do_v you_o sin_v great_o in_o frame_v to_o themselves_o new_a rule_n leave_v his_o word_n whereby_o they_o shall_v order_v and_o guide_v their_o life_n three_o i_o answer_v that_o this_o reason_n have_v in_o natural_a corruption_n be_v most_o grievous_a and_o fearful_a it_o make_v we_o to_o sin_n in_o whatsoever_o thing_n we_o do_v though_o in_o themselves_o they_o be_v thing_n indifferent_a or_o else_o good_a work_n ii_o this_o overthrow_v the_o conceit_n of_o popish_a writer_n which_o teach_v 4._o that_o god_n give_v to_o all_o man_n a_o universal_a common_a grace_n or_o help_v sufficient_a by_o work_n they_o proceed_v from_o justification_n they_o say_v justification_n twofold_a one_o whereby_o a_o man_n of_o a_o evil_a man_n be_v make_v a_o good_a man_n the_o second_o whereby_o of_o a_o because_o it_o be_v natural_a and_o so_o ready_o embrace_v second_o many_o among_o we_o do_v much_o affect_v it_o and_o three_o it_o be_v maintain_v by_o mighty_a monarch_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o it_o must_v down_o for_o it_o be_v a_o plant_n which_o god_n never_o set_v nor_o plant_v matth._n 15._o 13._o and_o the_o chief_a upholder_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v destroy_v ii_o use_n this_o teach_v we_o to_o eschew_v and_o shun_v false_a teacher_n and_o therefore_o do_v christ_n adâ—â—_n this_o exhortation_n matth._n 15._o 14._o lâ—t_v they_o alone_o they_o be_v the_o blind_a leader_n
