first_o by_o cleave_v fast_o to_o the_o word_n and_o second_o experience_n of_o god_n former_a deal_n three_o by_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a thing_n four_o and_o look_v as_o five_o by_o daily_a repentance_n for_o sin_n and_o sixth_o renounce_v our_o best_a righteousness_n seventh_o daily_a clear_n the_o evidence_n of_o our_o election_n that_o so_o we_o may_v daily_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o follow_v after_o perfection_n and_o thus_o of_o the_o cause_n and_o help_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n it_o remain_v yet_o to_o consider_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n in_o grace_n chap._n 4._o of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n with_o diverse_a comfortable_a observation_n therein_o and_o use_v thereof_o hitherto_o of_o the_o necessity_n nature_n and_o cause_n of_o this_o spiritual_a growth_n it_o now_o follow_v that_o we_o discover_v the_o manner_n thereof_o as_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o reveal_n of_o this_o great_a mystery_n and_o very_o necessary_a for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o and_o also_o to_o resist_v such_o tentation_n as_o do_v oppose_v the_o same_o or_o hinder_v the_o increase_n thereof_o to_o this_o end_n fear_n of_o god_n to_o search_v the_o secret_n of_o this_o mystery_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o so_o we_o may_v hereby_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o this_o spiritual_a growth_n up_o the_o good_a motion_n as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o and_o enable_v to_o put_v the_o motion_n into_o practice_n &_o give_v comfort_n in_o the_o practice_n by_o the_o acceptance_n thereof_o in_o christ_n above_o the_o worth_n thereof_o and_o hence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n to_o meet_v with_o diverse_a tentation_n incident_a to_o the_o new_a birth_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n therein_o that_o whereas_o we_o find_v ourselves_o tho_o true_o convert_v yet_o sometime_o to_o be_v unapt_a to_o holy_a duty_n find_v little_a comfort_n in_o they_o less_o power_n to_o resist_v corruption_n and_o so_o may_v think_v the_o work_n to_o be_v not_o only_o interrupt_v but_o quite_o undo_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v a_o creation_n not_o only_o in_o the_o beginning_n but_o in_o the_o proceed_n too_o psal_n 51.10_o though_o we_o may_v despair_v in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o yet_o must_v we_o now_o by_o faith_n still_o rely_v on_o our_o god_n who_o call_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o as_o if_o they_o be_v rom._n 4._o and_o yet_o see_v this_o creation_n be_v by_o mean_n though_o in_o themselves_o most_o unlikely_a yet_o effectual_a by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n hereto_o therefore_o for_o our_o recovery_n and_o proceed_v we_o must_v wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o mean_n for_o the_o renew_v of_o his_o work_n in_o due_a season_n second_o create_v whereby_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o action_n and_o then_o the_o action_n follow_v from_o those_o faculty_n in_o their_o order_n and_o time_n as_o the_o organ_n be_v create_v and_o fit_v thereto_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n the_o faculty_n be_v create_v in_o every_o part_n at_o the_o first_o in_o the_o understanding_n conscience_n will_n affection_n etc._n etc._n yet_o do_v not_o these_o faculty_n execute_v their_o several_a operation_n at_o the_o first_o by_o reason_n that_o the_o organ_n of_o those_o faculty_n be_v either_o yet_o not_o create_v or_o not_o fit_v for_o use_v whence_o follow_v these_o conclusion_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o growth_n and_o comfort_n therein_o 1._o for_o trial_n that_o see_v the_o faculty_n must_v lead_v to_o and_o enlive_v the_o action_n and_o of_o all_o faculty_n though_o the_o will_v be_v predominate_a yet_o the_o understanding_n must_v begin_v to_o discern_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v or_o undo_v and_o knowledge_n must_v inform_v and_o bind_v the_o conscience_n to_o the_o do_v thereof_o and_o so_o the_o will_v consequent_o be_v attempt_v and_o subdue_v to_o the_o performance_n or_o leave_v thereof_o therefore_o if_o we_o find_v this_o order_n in_o our_o growth_n we_o may_v undoubted_o conclude_v a_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n whereas_o in_o the_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n this_o order_n be_v pervert_v and_o deprave_a ofttimes_o many_o thing_n be_v do_v not_o so_o much_o out_o of_o knowledge_n or_o conscience_n but_o by_o example_n of_o other_o or_o sudden_a motion_n conscience_n of_o obedience_n so_o in_o humility_n for_o it_o imperfection_n so_o in_o patience_n etc._n etc._n whence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n both_o for_o the_o trial_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n 1_o for_o trial_n that_o if_o we_o find_v a_o genenerall_n affect_v of_o every_o part_n as_o well_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o will_n as_o a_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o same_o as_o well_o a_o love_n unto_o goodness_n as_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o a_o purpose_n of_o heart_n to_o leave_v it_o and_o do_v the_o contrary_a as_o a_o sight_n of_o it_o in_o the_o understanding_n and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n see_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v by_o the_o power_n of_o conscience_n natural_o especial_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n discern_v sin_n and_o so_o be_v conumce_v of_o it_o but_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o renew_a by_o grace_n neither_o can_v he_o hate_v it_o unfeigned_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o part_v with_o it_o upon_o the_o best_a term_n neither_o be_v able_a in_o any_o measure_n to_o forsake_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o true_a ground_n and_o the_o good_a of_o the_o ground_n 2._o as_o the_o seed_n be_v not_o discern_v in_o grow_v at_o the_o first_o and_o yet_o it_o grow_v so_o neither_o can_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n be_v discern_v in_o the_o beginning_n no_o not_o in_o the_o infancy_n thereof_o and_o weak_a proceed_n of_o the_o same_o 3._o as_o the_o seed_n in_o it_o grow_v up_o be_v rot_v first_o in_o the_o ground_n john_n 12._o and_o dead_a yea_o appear_a past_a hope_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n so_o far_o from_o be_v discern_v sometime_o to_o grow_v as_o that_o rather_o contrary_o to_o sense_n it_o die_v the_o old_a man_n must_v be_v daily_o mortify_v that_o the_o new_a man_n may_v increase_v yea_o the_o new_a man_n must_v be_v abase_v in_o the_o sense_n of_o it_o own_o attain_a measure_n that_o still_o it_o may_v grow_v up_o in_o christ_n to_o attain_v perfection_n and_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o old_a man_n with_o the_o new_a challenge_v the_o imperfection_n and_o stain_n of_o any_o goodness_n attain_v and_o the_o prevail_a of_o the_o flesh_n sometime_o in_o some_o degree_n over_o the_o spirit_n draw_v we_o contrary_a to_o our_o main_a purpose_n to_o many_o evil_n and_o yet_o further_a hereby_o our_o growth_n in_o nourish_v more_o necessary_a grace_n of_o humility_n and_o denial_n of_o ourselves_o of_o faith_n in_o christ_n contrary_a to_o sense_n of_o spiritual_a poverty_n and_o hunger_a after_o christ_n of_o holy_a thirst_v after_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o this_o afford_v also_o diverse_a gracious_a consequence_n for_o our_o better_a discern_v of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o first_o that_o we_o may_v not_o expect_v perfection_n at_o the_o first_o nay_o we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v though_o as_o the_o seed_n die_v and_o rot_v before_o it_o come_v up_o and_o yield_v fruit_n so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o even_o after_o the_o seed_n of_o grace_n be_v sow_v in_o we_o for_o this_o do_v tend_v to_o the_o more_o glorious_a trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o to_o the_o great_a advancement_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n in_o sustain_v we_o in_o these_o kind_n of_o desertion_n of_o his_o wisdom_n and_o mercy_n in_o turn_v they_o about_o to_o the_o best_a unto_o us._n 2._o though_o we_o discern_v not_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n at_o the_o first_o no_o not_o for_o some_o time_n yet_o be_v the_o seed_n sow_v and_o will_v come_v up_o at_o length_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v make_v not_o haste_n isay_n 8._o three_o and_o last_o see_v the_o seed_n come_v up_o by_o contrary_n by_o die_v etc._n etc._n therefore_o as_o we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v in_o those_o particular_a blast_n and_o opposition_n those_o desertion_n and_o contradiction_n which_o do_v occur_v herein_o so_o neither_o for_o the_o general_a must_v we_o live_v by_o sense_n in_o any_o measure_n when_o we_o be_v at_o the_o height_n as_o we_o think_v to_o rest_v herein_o but_o still_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n deny_v ourselves_o and_o rely_v only_o upon_o christ_n in_o the_o mean_n that_o so_o by_o he_o we_o may_v be_v lead_v along_o to_o perfection_n three_o a_o three_o mystery_n shadow_v out_o the_o new_a birth_n be_v that_o it_o be_v resemble_v unto_o light_n prou._n 4.18_o 19_o heb._n 10.34_o 1._o which_o as_o it_o receive_v it_o power_n from_o the_o body_n of_o the_o son_n and_o this_o from_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n so_o our_o conversion_n be_v a_o spark_n of_o the_o light_n of_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o righteousness_n and_o this_o from_o the_o good_a pleasure_n and_o fountain_n of_o god_n eternal_a love_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o it_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v as_o the_o light_n subject_a to_o many_o ecclypse_n and_o vicissitude_n yet_o in_o god_n purpose_n and_o practice_v of_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v constant_a and_o eternal_a 2._o as_o the_o light_n shine_v more_o and_o more_o unto_o the_o perfect_a day_n so_o be_v it_o in_o our_o conversion_n at_o the_o first_o our_o light_n be_v dim_a and_o weak_a but_o still_o in_o grow_v the_o long_o we_o live_v in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n the_o more_o we_o shine_v in_o holiness_n the_o near_o we_o attain_v to_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n and_o therefore_o as_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a work_n of_o proceed_v though_o not_o always_o discernible_a as_o the_o sun_n shine_v always_o though_o not_o apparent_a in_o our_o horizon_n nay_o though_o the_o light_n be_v not_o discernible_a always_o in_o that_o measure_n yet_o as_o the_o withdraw_a of_o the_o light_n and_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n be_v very_o necessary_a and_o useful_a lest_o it_o extreme_a heat_n always_o continue_v shall_v burn_v the_o earth_n so_o the_o absence_n of_o this_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o work_n prove_v very_o profitable_a to_o humble_a and_o try_v our_o faith_n to_o make_v it_o express_v itself_o in_o other_o more_o necessary_a fruit_n of_o patience_n repentance_n compassion_n etc._n etc._n yea_o as_o the_o sun_n when_o it_o set_v in_o one_o circumference_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o so_o that_o when_o it_o be_v night_n with_o we_o it_o be_v day_n with_o other_o and_o yet_o we_o and_o they_o make_v but_o one_o universe_n so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n though_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o one_o part_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o it_o fail_v in_o some_o grace_n be_v the_o mean_n to_o express_v it_o in_o other_o that_o be_v more_o necessary_a and_o therefore_o though_o it_o shine_v not_o in_o one_o climate_n yet_o it_o shine_v in_o another_o and_o so_o while_o it_o be_v absent_a from_o one_o part_n it_o supply_v elsewhere_o and_o so_o by_o this_o dispensation_n by_o time_n and_o degree_n illustrate_v the_o whole_a and_o so_o though_o we_o daily_o grow_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o without_o some_o interruption_n and_o intermission_n to_o our_o sense_n for_o the_o present_a by_o reason_n of_o such_o tentation_n which_o overcast_v &_o trouble_v the_o same_o of_o such_o open_a sin_n as_o to_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o suspend_v it_o work_v in_o something_n and_o degree_n for_o the_o present_a or_o that_o we_o grow_v careless_a and_o formal_a in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o for_o the_o present_a want_n the_o comfort_n of_o they_o yet_o as_o the_o light_n shine_v more_o and_o more_o until_o the_o perfect_a day_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o new_a birth_n 4._o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v compare_v unto_o wind_n john_n 3.8_o now_o as_o the_o wind_n blow_v where_o it_o list_v and_o though_o we_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o yet_o we_o can_v discern_v whence_o it_o come_v and_o whither_o it_o go_v so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v always_o free_a in_o work_v and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v any_o goodness_n in_o we_o move_v the_o same_o to_o work_v otherwise_o then_o it_o please_v neither_o can_v the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o we_o hinder_v the_o same_o from_o work_v otherwise_o then_o that_o still_o may_v stand_v with_o the_o liberty_n and_o purpose_n thereof_o for_o our_o main_a good_a howsoever_o in_o some_o subordinate_a grace_n it_o may_v seem_v to_o fail_v and_o cease_v it_o work_v and_o hence_o arise_v many_o comfortable_a conclusion_n both_o to_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o also_o to_o comfort_v we_o therein_o as_o first_o in_o that_o no_o goodness_n in_o we_o can_v move_v it_o to_o work_v further_o than_o it_o please_v because_o it_o motion_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o goodness_n and_o dispose_v the_o same_o as_o it_o please_v for_o it_o own_o sake_n therefore_o though_o the_o best_a we_o do_v be_v in_o great_a weakness_n yet_o may_v not_o this_o challenge_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o show_v his_o power_n in_o our_o weakness_n and_o by_o our_o corruption_n raise_v daily_a matter_n to_o abase_v the_o flesh_n and_o reserve_v the_o glory_n entire_o unto_o god_n and_o thereby_o also_o provoke_v we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o strength_n in_o christ_n that_o in_o he_o we_o may_v grow_v up_o to_o perfection_n that_o so_o the_o work_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n may_v be_v daily_o lead_v forward_o by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o col._n 1.19_o 2._o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v free_o therefore_o howsoever_o when_o we_o have_v do_v
seasonable_a lest_o it_o may_v harden_v in_o sin_n yet_o shall_v we_o find_v such_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o may_v convince_v for_o sin_n and_o provoke_v just_a revenge_n for_o the_o same_o which_o shall_v now_o yield_v seasonable_a joy_n for_o the_o master_v of_o such_o a_o enemy_n and_o so_o enable_v to_o walk_v more_o wary_o against_o future_a encounter_n and_o more_o tender_o and_o wise_o also_o in_o judge_v and_o recover_v other_o so_o gracious_a be_v the_o lord_n to_o bring_v light_a out_o of_o darkness_n that_o though_o by_o our_o carelessness_n we_o have_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o be_v bereave_v of_o that_o assistance_n as_o may_v keep_v we_o from_o some_o such_o grievous_a sin_n which_o may_v awaken_v out_o of_o security_n yet_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o sin_n procure_v hearty_a sorrow_n and_o judge_v thereof_o shall_v thereby_o prove_v the_o mean_n to_o subdue_v the_o same_o and_o this_o mastery_n of_o corruption_n though_o it_o be_v bitter_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o may_v be_v cause_n of_o further_a sorrow_n yet_o withal_o it_o shall_v prove_v most_o comfortable_a to_o the_o spirit_n as_o have_v quiet_v the_o conscience_n gracious_o hereby_o and_o so_o recover_v boldness_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o so_o in_o his_o favour_n we_o may_v recover_v that_o unspeakable_a joy_n which_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o us._n the_o like_a may_v be_v apply_v in_o that_o other_o fearful_a case_n of_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o sin_n 2._o comfort_n in_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n which_o see_v it_o have_v be_v the_o lot_n of_o the_o dear_a servant_n of_o god_n that_o moses_n shall_v fail_v again_o in_o infidelity_n and_o abraham_n lie_v again_o concern_v his_o wife_n therefore_o as_o notwithstanding_o these_o sin_n they_o recover_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n so_o may_v we_o also_o hope_v for_o the_o like_a mercy_n though_o we_o fall_v again_o into_o the_o same_o infirmity_n for_o who_o shall_v restrain_v the_o spirit_n to_o blow_v as_o often_o as_o it_o list_v see_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o breath_n be_v in_o itself_o and_o not_o from_o we_o see_v it_o power_n be_v illimited_a and_o it_o breathe_v most_o free_a and_o absolute_a see_v it_o wisdom_n be_v infinite_a to_o turn_v daily_o fail_n to_o the_o best_a and_o his_o faithfulness_n everlasting_a to_o perfect_v his_o own_o work_n shall_v not_o this_o provoke_v we_o to_o love_v the_o more_o 7._o luke_n 7._o by_o how_o much_o more_o be_v forgive_v we_o shall_v it_o not_o more_o tend_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n mercy_n the_o more_o he_o forgive_v shall_v we_o not_o hereby_o prove_v more_o comfortable_a example_n to_o raise_v up_o great_a sinner_n shall_v we_o not_o have_v better_a experience_n to_o accomplish_v the_o same_o a_o second_o desertion_n follow_v upon_o the_o former_a namely_o correction_n 3._o comfort_n in_o desertion_n of_o correction_n that_o by_o reason_n of_o such_o grievous_a sin_n the_o lord_n withdraw_v himself_o from_o we_o as_o a_o chastisement_n thereof_o and_o so_o we_o be_v overtake_v not_o only_o with_o outward_a affliction_n that_o may_v bring_v we_o to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n but_o also_o with_o inward_a anguish_n and_o horror_n of_o spirit_n to_o scourge_v we_o sound_o for_o the_o same_o which_o though_o it_o prove_v a_o occasion_n to_o challenge_v our_o estate_n as_o be_v forsake_v of_o god_n and_o so_o many_o time_n plunge_v into_o the_o very_a jaw_n of_o despair_n yet_o why_o may_v not_o this_o prove_v sovereign_a and_o profitable_a unto_o we_o as_o well_o as_o physic_n compound_v even_o of_o poison_n recover_v desperate_a disease_n be_v not_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n more_o admirable_a herein_o to_o cure_v contrary_n by_o contrary_n be_v not_o the_o power_n of_o god_n more_o glorious_a in_o sustain_v in_o these_o extremity_n be_v not_o his_o mercy_n more_o glorious_a in_o relieve_v we_o by_o a_o invisible_a hand_n and_o intermingle_v such_o spark_n of_o hope_n with_o these_o flame_n of_o despair_n as_o that_o though_o ourselves_o can_v discern_v the_o same_o yet_o other_o that_o stand_v on_o the_o shore_n and_o have_v pass_v through_o such_o hellish_a storm_n may_v both_o sensible_o discover_v the_o same_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o sustain_n and_o recovery_n in_o due_a time_n and_o do_v not_o the_o spirit_n herein_o work_v wonderful_o for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n 13.15_o job_n 13.15_o that_o though_o the_o lord_n kill_v we_o yet_o we_o shall_v trust_v in_o he_o be_v not_o our_o love_n unto_o god_n wonderful_o confirm_v that_o now_o will_v follow_v he_o though_o he_o seem_v to_o forsake_v we_o that_o now_o fasten_v upon_o he_o when_o he_o seem_v to_o shake_v we_o off_o be_v not_o our_o sincerity_n gracious_o approve_v that_o though_o we_o find_v no_o comfort_n in_o his_o service_n nothing_o but_o thunder_n and_o lightning_n from_o his_o ordinance_n yet_o we_o shall_v rest_v on_o his_o own_o ordinance_n though_o they_o increase_v our_o malady_n we_o dare_v not_o but_o obey_v god_n nay_o we_o must_v use_v these_o mean_n even_o because_o he_o have_v command_v they_o sure_o as_o of_o all_o affliction_n this_o be_v most_o grievous_a so_o above_o all_o other_o the_o issue_n hereof_o be_v most_o glorious_a and_o comfortable_a and_o the_o long_o we_o be_v in_o cure_n the_o sound_o shall_v we_o be_v heal_v and_o be_v heal_v shall_v be_v more_o thorough_o comfort_v the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v concern_v all_o such_o other_o desertion_n and_o affliction_n of_o the_o mind_n 1._o as_o decay_v in_o grace_n 2._o deadness_n in_o holy_a duty_n 3._o not_o answer_v our_o best_a endeavour_n for_o the_o present_a and_o such_o like_a as_o shall_v be_v make_v manifest_a in_o my_o treatise_n of_o the_o cure_n of_o a_o wound_a spirit_n which_o shall_v short_o follow_v for_o the_o public_a good_a and_o thus_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o spiritual_a growth_n together_o with_o some_o such_o use_n as_o arise_v thereout_o both_o for_o reproof_n instruction_n and_o comfort_n the_o content_n of_o the_o five_o chapter_n 1._o concern_v our_o life_n by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n 2._o to_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a 3._o that_o we_o must_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o due_a season_n according_a to_o our_o calling_n 4._o that_o god_n accept_v the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n 5._o that_o by_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o mortification_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o manner_n also_o of_o spiritual_a growth_n may_v be_v discern_v chap._n 5._o of_o certain_a rule_n very_o necessary_a to_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n and_o to_o comfort_v we_o therein_o hitherto_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o spiritual_a grow_v in_o grace_n whereby_o as_o we_o may_v in_o part_n be_v satisfy_v in_o regard_n of_o such_o cavil_n which_o carnal_a reason_n may_v object_v against_o the_o same_o so_o for_o our_o further_a instruction_n and_o satisfaction_n herein_o observe_v we_o further_o these_o rule_n first_o that_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n 2._o cor._n 5.7_o that_o be_v to_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n not_o so_o much_o by_o what_o we_o present_o discern_v or_o by_o the_o present_a effect_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o we_o have_v use_v thereto_o for_o this_o may_v deceive_v we_o many_o way_n as_o by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n 1.5_o 1._o pet._n 1.5_o in_o blessing_n the_o mean_n above_o what_o we_o can_v think_v 4.21_o rom._n 4.21_o much_o more_o feel_v for_o the_o present_a and_o so_o by_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n be_v able_a to_o discern_v a_o far_o off_o what_o be_v fit_a for_o god_n glory_n and_o what_o be_v prepare_v for_o we_o to_o be_v capable_a of_o glory_n we_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o satisfy_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o so_o to_o be_v thankful_a for_o any_o work_n we_o find_v though_o it_o answer_v not_o the_o mean_n or_o our_o expectation_n for_o the_o present_a as_o still_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o what_o we_o discern_v not_o or_o what_o we_o do_v discern_v not_o correspondent_a thereto_o and_o so_o still_o to_o hunger_n after_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o who_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v both_o in_o the_o present_a measure_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v accept_v in_o the_o covenant_n and_o so_o enable_v thereby_o to_o a_o daily_o further_a measure_n that_o so_o at_o length_n we_o may_v attain_v to_o perfection_n and_o this_o both_o by_o compare_v what_o be_v pass_v with_o what_o be_v present_a that_o so_o we_o may_v discern_v whereto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o by_o thankfulness_n make_v way_n for_o further_a supply_n as_o also_o by_o thing_n past_a and_o present_a look_v to_o what_o be_v to_o come_v that_o so_o we_o may_v not_o stick_v in_o any_o measure_n receive_v but_o rather_o hasten_v
to_o that_o which_o be_v before_o 3.13_o phil._n 3.13_o and_o that_o still_o look_v to_o jesus_n the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n that_o so_o we_o may_v endeavour_v to_o perfect_a holiness_n thus_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o this_o will_v afford_v we_o many_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o settle_v we_o against_o diverse_a tentation_n which_o be_v incident_a hereto_o as_o first_o whereas_o it_o much_o distract_v the_o saint_n that_o because_o they_o can_v sensible_o discern_v for_o the_o present_a the_o maâ—ner_n of_o their_o spiritual_a growth_n no_o more_o than_o they_o can_v their_o natural_a therefore_o they_o question_v ofttimes_o the_o truth_n thereof_o if_o now_o they_o shall_v know_v that_o in_o the_o discern_a thereof_o they_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n this_o distraction_n will_v easy_o be_v remedy_v for_o now_o see_v that_o may_v be_v believe_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v not_o apprehend_v nay_o be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n therefore_o though_o our_o grow_a be_v not_o discernible_a to_o sense_n nay_o sense_n apprehend_v somewhat_o that_o may_v be_v contrary_a to_o our_o growth_n therefore_o notwithstanding_o these_o we_o may_v still_o grow_v in_o grace_n nay_o see_v we_o grow_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n therefore_o be_v this_o unto_o we_o a_o true_a evidence_n that_o we_o do_v grow_v indeed_o when_o we_o do_v not_o sensible_o discern_v it_o for_o the_o present_a when_o we_o find_v somewhat_o in_o appearance_n &_o opposition_n contrary_a thereto_o if_o we_o yield_v not_o hereunto_o but_o rather_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n and_o show_v his_o power_n in_o our_o weakness_n this_o indeed_o be_v a_o true_a token_n that_o we_o grow_v in_o spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o heavenly_a wisdom_n to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v and_o so_o also_o that_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o so_o do_v hereby_o fight_v the_o good_a fight_n of_o faith_n 2._o whereas_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o to_o have_v some_o feel_n of_o what_o we_o believe_v by_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o general_a as_o that_o thereby_o we_o be_v persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n in_o we_o but_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v further_a to_o rely_v upon_o the_o free_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n above_o what_o present_o we_o feel_v 18._o rom._n 4.17_o 18._o lest_o our_o present_a feeling_n cause_v spiritual_a pride_n and_o so_o security_n and_o so_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o remissness_n in_o well-doing_n do_v thereby_o hinder_v our_o spiritual_a growth_n therefore_o howsoever_o we_o may_v have_v some_o such_o sense_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n as_o that_o we_o may_v justify_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o for_o the_o present_a in_o the_o mean_n at_o least_o in_o humble_v we_o for_o our_o fail_a and_o imperfection_n therein_o that_o so_o it_o may_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a yet_o still_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n above_o any_o such_o present_a feel_n both_o to_o have_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o acceptance_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v above_o the_o worth_n thereof_o as_o also_o to_o look_v forward_o and_o lay_v hold_v upon_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ_n in_o who_o our_o imperfection_n presumption_n and_o keep_v in_o a_o continual_a hunger_n after_o the_o best_a grace_n and_o this_o meet_v with_o a_o second_o tentation_n arise_v from_o present_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n teach_v we_o to_o avoid_v spiritual_a pride_n presumption_n etc._n etc._n by_o live_v still_o by_o faith_n above_o and_o beyond_o all_o present_a feel_n and_o second_o though_o in_o our_o best_a performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n we_o find_v not_o that_o present_a answer_n as_o we_o expect_v but_o rather_o meet_v with_o what_o be_v contrary_a thereunto_o yet_o if_o now_o we_o can_v live_v by_o faith_n we_o shall_v be_v full_o satisfy_v for_o faith_n will_v now_o teach_v we_o to_o perform_v obedience_n unto_o god_n simple_o because_o he_o command_v and_o not_o so_o much_o for_o what_o be_v promise_v and_o so_o to_o measure_v our_o spiritual_a growth_n rather_o by_o increase_n of_o our_o obedience_n then_o return_v of_o the_o issue_n thereof_o yea_o though_o we_o have_v not_o our_o particular_a answer_n for_o the_o present_a yet_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n will_v bring_v forth_o patience_n 1.3_o jam._n 1.3_o and_o patience_n will_v perfect_v the_o work_n by_o perseverance_n therein_o yea_o faith_n 11.1_o heb._n 11.1_o which_o be_v of_o thing_n not_o see_v will_v enable_v we_o to_o see_v a_o far_o off_o into_o that_o great_a reward_n 11.26_o heb._n 11.26_o which_o will_v sufficient_o supply_v and_o recompense_v all_o our_o present_a disappointment_n and_o waiting_n nay_o though_o we_o meet_v with_o contrary_a blast_n and_o issue_n to_o our_o desire_n yet_o faith_n that_o purify_v the_o heart_n 15.9_o act_n 15.9_o will_v reveal_v unto_o we_o some_o inward_a cause_n of_o these_o contrary_a effect_n and_o so_o will_v enable_v we_o to_o purge_v out_o power_n of_o faith_n that_o rest_v we_o upon_o the_o power_n &_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n it_o will_v thereby_o pacify_v the_o mind_n in_o what_o god_n please_v to_o dispense_v and_o satisfy_v also_o the_o same_o that_o this_o be_v best_a for_o we_o though_o for_o the_o present_a we_o can_v discern_v it_o through_o impatience_n pride_n or_o such_o like_a yea_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n will_v dispel_v these_o fog_n and_o make_v manifest_a to_o the_o advise_a spirit_n what_o may_v be_v best_a for_o it_o yea_o herein_o also_o appear_v the_o wonderful_a virtue_n of_o faith_n that_o it_o will_v keep_v the_o work_n a_o foot_n more_o earnest_o the_o more_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v cross_v &_o continue_v the_o same_o more_o eager_o in_o hope_n at_o length_n to_o prevail_v and_o never_o give_v over_o till_o it_o have_v overcome_v the_o lord_n oh_o that_o we_o can_v wise_o consider_v thereof_o indeed_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n that_o if_o we_o believe_v we_o shall_v obtain_v whatsoever_o we_o ask_v so_o that_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o if_o we_o do_v not_o obtain_v we_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o if_o we_o remember_v withal_o that_o we_o must_v ask_v according_a to_o god_n will_v and_o that_o beggar_n must_v be_v no_o chooser_n and_o that_o we_o may_v not_o indent_v with_o god_n either_o for_o the_o time_n or_o particular_a for_o so_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n we_o may_v undoubted_o obtain_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o if_o not_o the_o particular_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o what_o meanwhile_o shall_v be_v better_o and_o the_o particular_a if_o necessary_a in_o the_o time_n most_o convenient_a only_o let_v we_o pray_v in_o faith_n 1.6_o jam._n 1.6_o and_o so_o wait_v with_o patience_n apprehend_v he_o which_o be_v invisible_a and_o in_o he_o the_o glory_n to_o be_v reveal_v and_o so_o shall_v we_o obtain_v whatsoever_o may_v further_o thereunto_o in_o that_o time_n and_o manner_n and_o measure_n as_o may_v be_v most_o available_a to_o conclude_v this_o point_n the_o necessity_n of_o this_o life_n by_o faith_n arise_v from_o these_o two_o consideration_n 1._o from_o that_o admirable_a and_o wise_a manner_n of_o god_n deal_v with_o we_o in_o lead_v forward_o to_o perfection_n 2._o from_o our_o weak_a and_o diverse_a manner_n of_o apprehend_v the_o same_o i_o god_n deal_v herein_o be_v discern_v first_o by_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n that_o be_v by_o produce_v contrary_n out_o of_o contrary_n good_a out_o of_o evil_a grace_n out_o of_o sin_n and_o this_o the_o lord_n do_v diverse_a way_n first_o general_o work_v out_o of_o every_o thought_n then_o to_o carry_v we_o smothe_o in_o a_o fair_a outside_n of_o conversation_n 2_o that_o in_o this_o general_n mystery_n we_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v the_o main_a and_o principal_a mystery_n of_o christ_n both_o to_o know_v the_o fellowship_n of_o his_o suffering_n 12.13_o phil._n 3_o 12.13_o and_o also_o the_o power_n of_o his_o resurrection_n that_o so_o we_o may_v attain_v daily_o to_o be_v empty_v in_o ourselves_o that_o we_o may_v be_v partaker_n of_o his_o fullness_n and_o can_v we_o be_v empty_v in_o ourselves_o but_o by_o daily_o deny_v our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o can_v we_o deny_v our_o righteousness_n but_o by_o discern_v the_o imperfection_n thereof_o and_o can_v we_o discern_v this_o but_o in_o the_o glass_n of_o that_o fullness_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n thus_o by_o the_o pattern_n to_o which_o we_o must_v grow_v we_o may_v discern_v the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n even_o to_o perfection_n and_o so_o by_o how_o much_o we_o come_v near_o to_o this_o pattern_n by_o so_o much_o we_o may_v approve_v our_o spiritual_a growth_n and_o this_o we_o shall_v yet_o further_o discern_v if_o we_o consider_v the_o end_n to_o which_o we_o grow_v namely_o everlasting_a glory_n and_o happiness_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v which_o see_v it_o be_v perfect_a without_o mixture_n of_o our_o acry_n corruption_n constant_a without_o any_o to_o these_o diverse_a season_n and_o especial_o find_v the_o improvement_n of_o such_o gift_n as_o serve_v particular_o for_o the_o redeem_n thereof_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a evidence_n of_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n 3_o see_v as_o we_o grow_v in_o age_n so_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o yet_o to_o our_o several_a age_n in_o grace_n there_o be_v appropriate_v diverse_a and_o several_a gift_n for_o the_o better_a discern_a and_o manage_n of_o the_o occasion_n thereof_o as_o to_o novice_n in_o grace_n and_o youngling_n spiritual_a heat_n and_o vigour_n usual_o appertain_v and_o so_o hereby_o we_o may_v make_v trial_n whether_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n if_o we_o have_v attain_a to_o such_o conscience_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n as_o that_o we_o can_v only_o prefer_v the_o performance_n thereof_o above_o any_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o unless_o it_o be_v in_o such_o case_n of_o necessity_n and_o charity_n whereby_o we_o preserve_v the_o bond_n of_o love_n which_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n though_o we_o exchange_v some_o particular_a duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n in_o such_o case_n with_o
