motive_n the_o second_o motive_n to_o move_v you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a motive_n man_n be_v this_o if_o you_o labour_v to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n you_o shall_v thereby_o action_n of_o holy_a man_n but_o if_o you_o taste_v they_o that_o be_v examine_v their_o life_n and_o search_v into_o their_o heart_n you_o shall_v find_v a_o great_a difference_n it_o may_v be_v they_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v light_n and_o heat_n in_o they_o but_o they_o want_v this_o spirit_n for_o they_o have_v neither_o a_o loathe_n of_o sin_n nor_o power_n to_o resist_v sin_n they_o may_v put_v a_o false_a colour_n upon_o their_o action_n but_o it_o will_v not_o hold_v and_o by_o this_o they_o may_v restrain_v lust_n for_o some_o end_n they_o can_v master_n and_o subdue_v they_o and_o it_o may_v heat_v a_o part_n of_o his_o heart_n but_o it_o can_v heat_v all_o his_o heart_n but_o where_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n come_v it_o heat_v all_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v it_o kindle_v a_o holy_a fire_n in_o all_o the_o faculty_n to_o burn_v up_o sin_n that_o be_v there_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o john_n the_o baptist_n baptism_n and_o christ_n holy_a duty_n with_o that_o coldness_n as_o if_o you_o care_v not_o whether_o you_o do_v they_o or_o do_v they_o not_o do_v you_o hear_v as_o if_o you_o hear_v not_o and_o do_v you_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n as_o if_o you_o receive_v it_o not_o do_v you_o pray_v as_o if_o you_o pray_v not_o do_v you_o love_v as_o if_o you_o love_v not_o then_o sure_o you_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o you_o find_v spiritual_a heat_n and_o zeal_n in_o you_o a_o nimbleness_n and_o quickness_n to_o goodâ—_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o have_v the_o spirit_n â—or_a it_o that_o some_o have_v more_o and_o some_o have_v less_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n that_o they_o have_v but_o this_o you_o must_v know_v that_o you_o must_v be_v full_a of_o heat_n full_a in_o some_o measure_n answerable_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o if_o you_o find_v no_o heat_n at_o all_o in_o you_o than_o you_o have_v not_o a_o grain_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o you_o not_o to_o be_v hot_a be_v to_o be_v luke_o warm_a and_o luke_o warmness_n be_v that_o which_o god_n hate_v it_o be_v a_o temper_n mix_v of_o both_o heat_n and_o cold_a loathsome_a to_o nature_n and_o odious_a to_o god_n and_o therefore_o in_o revel_n 3._o because_o the_o laodicean_n be_v neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a but_o luke_o warm_a that_o be_v they_o have_v neither_o 3._o heat_n to_o god_n nor_o be_v so_o cold_a as_o to_o forsake_v the_o truth_n that_o be_v sin_n and_o holiness_n stand_v in_o arbitration_n together_o and_o they_o have_v as_o beseech_v you_o labour_n to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o labour_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n that_o you_o may_v be_v zealous_a but_o alas_o man_n think_v that_o they_o have_v drink_v if_o you_o find_v your_o own_o spirit_n dead_a in_o you_o and_o christ_n spirit_n quick_a and_o lively_a in_o you_o and_o this_o you_o shall_v know_v also_o by_o your_o affection_n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v other_o affection_n both_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o holiness_n and_o to_o the_o saint_n than_o you_o have_v before_o it_o be_v certain_a you_o have_v the_o spirit_n for_o this_o what_o it_o be_v and_o yet_o in_o substance_n remain_v the_o same_o as_o for_o example_n put_v iron_n into_o the_o fire_n the_o iron_n be_v the_o same_o it_o be_v in_o substance_n before_o it_o come_v into_o the_o fire_n but_o now_o it_o have_v another_o quality_n it_o be_v cold_a and_o stiff_a and_o hard_a and_o unpliable_a but_o now_o it_o be_v hot_a soft_a and_o pliable_a and_o this_o change_n be_v throughout_o in_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v iron_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a he_o mingle_v and_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v if_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v in_o you_o the_o body_n be_v dead_a as_o touch_v sin_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v alive_a that_o be_v he_o be_v like_o a_o tree_n that_o want_v both_o sap_n and_o root_n or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v dead_a that_o want_v a_o soul_n he_o be_v now_o dead_a whatsoever_o he_o be_v before_o therefore_o examine_v if_o this_o thorough_a and_o great_a change_n be_v you_o see_v then_o what_o death_n there_o be_v in_o you_o to_o sin_n and_o what_o life_n of_o unchaste_a widow_n that_o they_o be_v dead_a while_o they_o live_v so_o i_o may_v say_v of_o every_o man_n that_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a man_n dead_a to_o good_a to_o grace_v to_o holiness_n i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o life_n without_o the_o spirit_n man_n be_v not_o live_v man_n because_o they_o walk_v and_o talk_v and_o the_o like_a but_o they_o be_v live_v man_n that_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a there_o be_v no_o true_a life_n neither_o be_v man_n to_o be_v esteem_v live_v man_n that_o want_v the_o ourselves_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a and_o leave_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v true_o holy_a and_o good_a i_o do_v not_o say_v when_o i_o hate_v good_a but_o when_o i_o prefer_v evil_a before_o good_a set_v it_o at_o the_o high_a end_n of_o the_o table_n and_o serve_v it_o first_o and_o attend_v on_o it_o most_o that_o be_v when_o holy_a duty_n become_v troublesome_a and_o wearisome_a unto_o you_o when_o it_o go_v against_o the_o hair_n as_o we_o say_v that_o they_o cross_v our_o nature_n and_o yet_o you_o will_v not_o cross_v it_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o common_a spirit_n without_o life_n the_o second_a property_n of_o a_o assume_v body_n of_o grace_n be_v if_o you_o have_v it_o not_o in_o a_o feel_a manner_n the_o sanctify_a proper_a spirit_n work_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o taste_v in_o the_o soul._n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n then_o holy_a thing_n will_v have_v a_o good_a taste_n it_o will_v be_v sweet_a unto_o you_o it_o will_v purge_v out_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n on_o the_o contrary_a the_o common_a spirit_n will_v never_o make_v you_o to_o taste_v grace_n as_o it_o be_v grace_n or_o because_o it_o be_v grace_n that_o be_v grace_n will_v not_o be_v a_o dainty_a thing_n and_o it_o will_v be_v without_o a_o good_a savour_n therefore_o examine_v what_o taste_n of_o good_a you_o have_v whether_o you_o can_v relish_v grace_n or_o no_o if_o not_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o
christian_a like_a walk_n and_o holy_a conversation_n and_o this_o be_v the_o same_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o when_o he_o will_v assure_v 6._o they_o of_o their_o resurrection_n to_o life_n in_o rom._n 6._o if_o you_o die_v with_o christ_n you_o shall_v also_o rise_v with_o he_o again_o that_o be_v if_o your_o action_n be_v the_o action_n of_o the_o spirit_n proceed_v from_o the_o inward_a be_v the_o doctor_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o teach_v it_o all_o spiritual_a and_o save_a knowledge_n and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n say_v you_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o be_v teach_v of_o any_o the_o mind_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o you_o need_v not_o teach_v you_o to_o love_v for_o you_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o love_v one_o another_o that_o be_v there_o be_v a_o you_o love_v god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n then_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o have_v the_o spirit_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o you_o follow_v drunkenness_n his_o spirit_n be_v stir_v within_o he_o when_o he_o see_v the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o people_n of_o athens_n so_o when_o a_o man_n spirit_n stir_v itself_o after_o this_o manner_n when_o from_o that_o new_a quality_n that_o be_v put_v into_o it_o it_o work_v out_o the_o uncleanness_n that_o be_v in_o it_o this_o be_v the_o holiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o no_o man_n have_v it_o but_o from_o christ._n as_o the_o needle_n unless_o it_o have_v it_o from_o the_o loadstone_n simile_n can_v not_o have_v that_o property_n of_o look_v to_o the_o north_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n before_o christ_n dwell_v in_o he_o before_o he_o have_v put_v a_o new_a quality_n of_o holiness_n he_o never_o look_v towards_o god_n but_o when_o it_o be_v do_v once_o it_o can_v do_v otherwise_o therefore_o those_o in_o who_o christ_n dwell_v can_v sin_v that_o be_v can_v delight_v in_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o great_a benefit_n therefore_o and_o this_o holiness_n of_o spirit_n they_o have_v in_o who_o christ_n dwell_v to_o be_v holy_a in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n to_o be_v holy_a at_o all_o time_n in_o all_o place_n in_o all_o that_o he_o do_v to_o have_v a_o holiness_n of_o spirit_n act_v and_o appear_v therein_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n and_o therefore_o the_o benefit_n be_v the_o great_a so_o now_o how_o much_o unholiness_n we_o may_v find_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n when_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n step_v out_o and_o do_v what_o it_o do_v to_o its_o own_o end_n and_o look_v not_o to_o christ_n but_o to_o other_o end_n this_o be_v unholiness_n and_o adultery_n of_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o those_o the_o trade_n of_o who_o life_n be_v not_o to_o look_v at_o god_n in_o their_o action_n but_o to_o themselves_o to_o answ._n when_o you_o do_v all_o these_o as_o to_o god_n as_o fit_v you_o for_o his_o service_n when_o you_o put_v god_n as_o the_o end_n unto_o all_o that_o you_o do_v then_o be_v your_o spirit_n holy_a you_o know_v that_o place_n whether_o you_o eat_v or_o drink_v or_o whatsoever_o you_o do_v do_v all_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n that_o be_v respect_n god_n in_o it_o make_v not_o yourselves_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o it_o for_o then_o your_o heart_n be_v unholy_a for_o holiness_n be_v to_o keep_v the_o
