pleasure_n be_v not_o alone_o mischievous_a hinderer_n of_o this_o thrift_n in_o that_o they_o consume_v the_o very_a hour_n themselves_o but_o as_o much_o or_o more_o also_o in_o that_o they_o dissettle_v the_o heart_n and_o pull_v the_o affection_n out_o of_o joint_n so_o that_o a_o man_n be_v drive_v to_o take_v as_o much_o pain_n to_o set_v his_o heart_n to_o a_o good_a exercise_n as_o will_v well_o have_v dispatch_v the_o duty_n have_v he_o not_o be_v thus_o unfit_a now_o what_o a_o miserable_a loss_n be_v it_o when_o a_o man_n be_v rob_v of_o his_o time_n and_o of_o his_o heart_n both_o at_o once_o and_o by_o both_o keep_v from_o read_v pray_v meditate_v examine_v his_o heart_n or_o any_o such_o good_a exercise_n for_o his_o soul_n advantage_n wherefore_o if_o any_o man_n will_v so_o prevent_v these_o vain_a &_o foolish_a sport_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o spoil_v he_o of_o his_o heart_n and_o hour_n let_v he_o observe_v these_o two_o rule_n in_o his_o sport_n and_o then_o he_o shall_v do_v well_o in_o these_o respect_n first_o this_o be_v presuppose_v that_o he_o do_v not_o use_v any_o recreation_n but_o those_o which_o he_o can_v prove_v to_o be_v in_o themselves_o lawful_a first_o i_o say_v for_o the_o begin_n of_o recreation_n let_v every_o man_n know_v that_o recreation_n must_v follow_v labour_n for_o the_o most_o part_n or_o if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o go_v before_o it_o it_o must_v be_v very_o little_a only_o to_o fit_v one_o for_o labour_n the_o lord_n allow_v a_o man_n no_o sport_n though_o never_o so_o lawful_a in_o itself_o until_o such_o time_n as_o his_o body_n or_o mind_n do_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o it_o chief_o when_o they_o have_v be_v busy_v in_o some_o such_o honest_a affair_n as_o by_o weary_v they_o have_v make_v they_o unfit_a for_o further_a labour_n so_o that_o they_o must_v again_o be_v fit_v thereto_o by_o recreation_n until_o painstaking_a have_v make_v the_o body_n or_o mind_n not_o so_o well_o able_a to_o take_v pain_n there_o be_v no_o allowance_n ordinary_o for_o recreation_n all_o our_o sport_n and_o recreation_n if_o we_o will_v use_v they_o well_o i_o speak_v of_o those_o which_o be_v lawful_a must_v be_v to_o our_o body_n or_o mind_n as_o the_o mower_n whetstone_n or_o rifle_n be_v to_o his_o since_o to_o sharpen_v it_o when_o it_o grow_v dull_a he_o that_o when_o his_o since_o be_v dull_v will_v not_o upon_o a_o desire_n to_o do_v more_o work_n take_v time_n to_o whet_v it_o shall_v cut_v less_o and_o with_o more_o pain_n &_o more_o unhandsome_o than_o he_o need_v to_o do_v so_o he_o that_o when_o his_o body_n or_o mind_n be_v tire_v or_o heavy_a will_v not_o use_v some_o honest_a refresh_n shall_v do_v less_o and_o with_o less_o dexterity_n than_o he_o may_v but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o the_o mower_n shall_v do_v nothing_o from_o morning_n to_o noon_n or_o from_o noon_n to_o night_n but_o whet_v whet_v whet_v rub_v his_o since_o he_o will_v both_o mar_v firm_a direction_n that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o a_o man_n in_o a_o ordinary_a course_n to_o spend_v more_o time_n in_o any_o pastime_n upon_o any_o day_n then_o in_o religious_a exercise_n i_o mean_v chief_o private_a religious_a exercise_n i_o say_v it_o be_v utter_o unlawful_a to_o bestow_v a_o large_a time_n any_o day_n upon_o the_o most_o lawful_a delight_n then_o in_o private_a religious_a exercise_n or_o at_o least_o in_o a_o customable_a course_n so_o to_o do_v this_o be_v plain_o prove_v by_o that_o which_o christ_n speak_v to_o we_o say_v first_o 6.33_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o you_o see_v here_o command_v to_o prefer_v the_o seek_n of_o heaven_n before_o any_o other_o thing_n whatsoever_o to_o let_v that_o have_v the_o chief_a place_n in_o our_o soul_n and_o in_o our_o life_n now_o he_o that_o first_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n can_v bestow_v more_o time_n in_o sport_n of_o any_o sort_n then_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o do_v direct_o make_v for_o the_o obtain_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o that_o righteousness_n which_o will_v bring_v one_o thereunto_o such_o as_o be_v hear_v and_o read_v the_o word_n pray_v meditate_v examine_v the_o heart_n confer_v and_o the_o like_a and_o sure_o this_o be_v a_o most_o equal_a thing_n that_o the_o most_o needful_a duty_n shall_v have_v the_o most_o time_n bestow_v upon_o it_o yea_o &_o it_o be_v a_o most_o easy_a rule_n to_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o have_v season_v their_o heart_n with_o the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n for_o if_o a_o man_n delight_n on_o god_n he_o may_v well_o give_v as_o much_o time_n to_o these_o action_n as_o to_o any_o carnal_a sport_n but_o if_o any_o man_n calling_n lie_v in_o study_n or_o such_o like_a labour_n of_o the_o mind_n first_o the_o change_n be_v a_o great_a refresh_n and_o variety_n a_o delight_n and_o then_o there_o be_v religious_a exercise_n which_o will_v refresh_v the_o mind_n as_o well_o as_o any_o sport_n and_o for_o so_o much_o exercise_n as_o health_n require_v it_o be_v not_o long_o in_o use_v because_o nature_n be_v here_o as_o in_o other_o matter_n content_a with_o a_o little_a howsoever_o man_n seek_v excuse_n by_o belie_v she_o so_o that_o at_o the_o least_o a_o equal_a portion_n of_o time_n must_v be_v allot_v to_o god_n and_o religion_n as_o to_o sport_n and_o delight_n even_o of_o student_n if_o they_o will_v first_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n therefore_o let_v a_o man_n measure_n out_o the_o time_n of_o sport_v and_o recreate_v himself_o by_o the_o time_n he_o take_v to_o pray_v to_o read_v to_o meditate_v to_o sing_v psalm_n to_o confer_v of_o good_a thing_n or_o the_o like_a and_o know_v that_o he_o have_v not_o liberty_n from_o god_n to_o employ_v ordinary_o so_o much_o time_n never_o to_o employ_v one_o minute_n more_o in_o the_o most_o unoffensive_a sport_n then_o in_o these_o service_n of_o god_n now_o let_v a_o man_n conform_v himself_o to_o these_o two_o rule_n begin_v not_o play_v till_o need_v of_o body_n or_o mind_n exact_v it_o continue_v not_o sport_n long_o than_o a_o man_n have_v or_o shall_v continue_v some_o godly_a private_a exercise_n of_o religion_n and_o he_o shall_v save_v his_o time_n well_o from_o this_o first_o thief_n now_o come_v to_o be_v consider_v the_o next_o spender_n or_o rather_o robber_n of_o time_n that_o be_v idle_a twattle_a or_o babble_n and_o concern_v this_o our_o saviour_n christ_n deal_v plain_o with_o we_o say_v 12.36_o that_o of_o every_o idle_a word_n which_o man_n shall_v the_o immoderate_a care_n of_o the_o world_n and_o of_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o themselves_o honest_a and_o lawful_a when_o a_o man_n do_v wind_v himself_o into_o such_o a_o labyrinth_n and_o maze_n of_o affair_n as_o he_o can_v not_o get_v out_o at_o fit_a time_n to_o spiritual_a and_o religious_a duty_n at_o least_o not_o to_o those_o which_o be_v private_a when_o the_o heart_n be_v so_o surcharge_v with_o bargain_n and_o purchase_n and_o buy_v and_o sell_v and_o building_n and_o such_o like_a that_o god_n and_o goodness_n christ_n and_o salvation_n heaven_n and_o hell_n come_v not_o into_o a_o man_n mind_n once_o in_o a_o day_n scarce_o once_o in_o a_o week_n or_o at_o least_o if_o they_o come_v they_o be_v quick_o shut_v out_o and_o have_v no_o long_a nor_o quiet_a entertainment_n there_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v overwhelm_v with_o the_o name_n of_o care_v think_v devise_v and_o strive_v how_o to_o grow_v great_a here_o and_o be_v so_o toss_v in_o the_o gulf_n of_o earthly_a matter_n that_o it_o can_v come_v to_o land_n as_o it_o be_v to_o settle_v itself_o in_o any_o proportion_n to_o think_v how_o it_o may_v grow_v great_a in_o heaven_n and_o how_o it_o may_v get_v possession_n of_o the_o true_a treasure_n this_o be_v a_o wondrous_a consumer_n of_o good_a hour_n dig_v they_o all_o into_o the_o dunghill_n of_o this_o world_n 22._o christ_n find_v fault_n with_o this_o in_o the_o parable_n the_o man_n bid_v to_o the_o feast_n have_v farm_n and_o ox_n and_o wife_n and_o such_o matter_n in_o hand_n business_n forsooth_o of_o more_o importance_n than_o so_o and_o therefore_o can_v not_o come_v 13._o and_o the_o thorny_a ground_n have_v so_o much_o cark_n and_o care_v how_o to_o live_v that_o it_o do_v even_o choke_v the_o word_n the_o good_a give_v elbow_n room_n to_o any_o good_a exercise_n especial_o to_o any_o private_a exercise_n without_o which_o the_o public_a be_v but_o as_o meat_n without_o digestion_n and_o yet_o it_o come_v like_o a_o honest_a and_o approvable_a thing_n paint_v with_o the_o name_n of_o thriftiness_n and_o pain_n in_o one_o lawful_a calling_n to_o fence_v ourselves_o against_o this_o ravenous_a and_o lurk_a fault_n we_o must_v bind_v ourselves_o to_o these_o three_o rule_n which_o all_o depend_v upon_o the_o rule_n of_o christ_n that_o bid_v we_o first_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n 6.33_o ordinary_a religious_a exercise_n the_o common_a and_o daily_a matter_n of_o this_o world_n in_o any_o man_n calling_n whatsoever_o shall_v not_o draw_v he_o or_o his_o family_n from_o common_a and_o daily_a duty_n of_o religion_n such_o be_v read_v pray_v meditate_v and_o religious_a observe_v of_o the_o sabbath_n for_o here_o a_o man_n must_v take_v care_n for_o his_o household_n as_o well_o as_o for_o himself_o that_o he_o do_v not_o hinder_v they_o from_o take_v convenient_a time_n to_o pray_v and_o read_v etc._n etc._n by_o force_v upon_o they_o a_o over_o great_a burden_n of_o ordinary_a business_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o body_n and_o heaven_n before_o earth_n than_o those_o customable_a matter_n that_o pertain_v to_o the_o save_n of_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v set_v before_o must_v more_o stand_v equal_a with_o the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v to_o the_o body_n second_o the_o extraordinary_a work_n of_o our_o call_n if_o any_o fall_n out_o must_v not_o bar_v we_o from_o the_o extraordinary_a work_n of_o religion_n as_o for_o example_n harvest_n and_o hay-time_n or_o the_o like_a be_v extraordinary_a time_n for_o the_o business_n for_o the_o body_n so_o preparation_n to_o the_o sacrament_n fast_v if_o need_v so_o require_v and_o such_o like_a be_v extraordinary_a work_n for_o the_o soul_n now_o the_o care_n of_o inning_n one_o corn_n or_o grass_n must_v not_o keep_v he_o from_o take_v time_n to_o prepare_v himself_o to_o the_o sacrament_n or_o to_o fast_o at_o his_o need_n so_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n it_o be_v that_o be_v to_o be_v redeem_v and_o so_o you_o shall_v full_o know_v wherein_o this_o duty_n consist_v now_o by_o time_n the_o apostle_n mean_v two_o thing_n first_o the_o very_a pass_v
