service_n of_o god_n to_o be_v but_o vain_a reason_n 1_o the_o first_o be_v because_o they_o make_v question_n whether_o there_o be_v any_o such_o lord_n to_o serve_v or_o no_o for_o as_o psal_n morning_n till_o noon_n and_o from_o noon_n till_o night_n the_o prophet_n that_o stand_v by_o mock_v at_o they_o and_o deride_v they_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o do_v so_o be_v because_o he_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o god_n as_o they_o seem_v to_o serve_v none_o such_o to_o hear_v and_o help_v as_o they_o call_v and_o cry_v unto_o and_o that_o therefore_o what_o they_o do_v where_o carnal_a heart_n behold_v these_o thing_n i_o say_v they_o secret_o mock_v at_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n for_o do_v thus_o as_o think_v in_o their_o heart_n that_o their_o labour_n be_v but_o lose_v and_o in_o vain_a because_o they_o make_v question_n whether_o there_o be_v any_o such_o god_n to_o serve_v or_o no_o which_o if_o there_o be_v not_o than_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a indeed_o and_o though_o there_o be_v yet_o they_o question_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o these_o thing_n must_v needs_o seem_v in_o vain_a to_o they_o reason_n 2_o second_o they_o think_v the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v a_o vain_a service_n because_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o they_o they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o any_o of_o god_n service_n which_o they_o do_v and_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o no_o body_n else_o be_v they_o get_v nothing_o at_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o at_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n but_o come_v away_o as_o dead_a heart_a with_o their_o corruption_n as_o strong_a and_o they_o continue_v as_o ignorant_a of_o the_o my_o stery_n of_o christ_n and_o life_n and_o as_o unable_a to_o pray_v or_o do_v god_n any_o service_n as_o formerly_z and_o therefore_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o they_o they_o think_v it_o be_v thus_o with_o every_o body_n else_o yea_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o good_a as_o man_n speak_v of_o to_o be_v get_v in_o why_o they_o do_v then_o get_v no_o more_o good_a thereby_o and_o so_o make_v they_o call_v into_o question_n the_o truth_n and_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o perform_a duty_n and_o do_v of_o god_n service_n which_o to_o prevent_v as_o also_o to_o save_v themselves_o in_o the_o esteem_n of_o other_o so_o far_o as_o they_o can_v they_o cast_v this_o imputation_n upon_o the_o service_n of_o god_n itself_o simil._n as_o it_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o some_o servant_n that_o have_v waste_v their_o wage_n by_o some_o riotous_a course_n or_o secret_a haunt_n of_o expense_n to_o save_v their_o credit_n with_o their_o friend_n and_o such_o as_o will_v else_o be_v ready_a to_o tax_v they_o for_o ill_a husbandry_n in_o come_v away_o without_o clothes_n on_o their_o back_n or_o money_n in_o their_o purse_n they_o to_o save_v their_o credit_n and_o avoid_v blame_n unjust_o accuse_v that_o service_n they_o dwell_v in_o &_o say_v that_o it_o be_v a_o stroy_n and_o waste_v service_n much_o work_n and_o little_a wage_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v get_v in_o it_o and_o the_o like_a think_v thereby_o to_o escape_v free_a from_o blame_n which_o it_o be_v true_a they_o may_v do_v with_o those_o that_o know_v not_o the_o service_n but_o not_o with_o those_o that_o know_v how_o good_a and_o profitable_a a_o service_n it_o be_v thus_o do_v carnal_a heart_n with_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o think_v and_o say_v it_o be_v but_o vain_a to_o save_v themselves_o and_o whereas_o they_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o some_o other_o do_v thrive_v and_o grow_v better_o and_o more_o than_o themselves_o they_o will_v not_o acknowledge_v this_o to_o be_v from_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n but_o rather_o from_o some_o other_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n when_o they_o see_v other_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o part_n whilst_o themselves_o remain_v still_o gross_o ignorant_a they_o will_v not_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o get_v this_o by_o attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n and_o ordinance_n but_o rather_o impute_v it_o to_o good_a education_n to_o the_o strength_n of_o their_o memory_n and_o other_o ability_n of_o their_o own_o when_o they_o see_v other_o have_v get_v power_n over_o their_o passion_n and_o corruption_n whilst_o they_o remain_v still_o harebrained_a and_o furious_a upon_o every_o slight_a occasion_n that_o the_o wag_n of_o a_o straw_n will_v make_v they_o off_o the_o hook_n and_o make_v they_o little_a better_o than_o bedlam_n they_o will_v not_o ascribe_v any_o such_o grace_n to_o be_v power_n receive_v from_o jesus_n christ_n through_o any_o ordinance_n but_o rather_o to_o the_o goodness_n of_o their_o nature_n oh_o they_o be_v of_o a_o more_o mild_a carnal_a heart_n and_o a_o black_a brand_n set_v upon_o the_o wicked_a by_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereby_o all_o the_o world_n may_v know_v they_o to_o be_v wicked_a wherever_o they_o find_v it_o and_o they_o themselves_o may_v know_v themselves_o so_o to_o be_v much_o more_o let_v they_o be_v otherwise_o never_o so_o fair_a and_o formal_a yet_o if_o they_o find_v this_o in_o themselves_o it_o may_v be_v conviction_n enough_o unto_o they_o that_o their_o heart_n be_v carnal_a and_o their_o condition_n desperate_a if_o any_o body_n shall_v go_v and_o raise_v a_o report_n upon_o you_o that_o be_v master_n and_o give_v great_a wage_n that_o you_o give_v your_o servant_n no_o wage_n will_v you_o take_v it_o well_o at_o their_o hand_n yet_o thus_o do_v you_o report_v of_o god_n service_n at_o least_o by_o your_o practice_n by_o your_o omit_v of_o that_o which_o god_n command_v and_o by_o your_o commit_n of_o that_o which_o god_n forbid_v you_o proclaim_v the_o service_n of_o god_n to_o be_v nothing_o worth_a but_o suppose_v one_o shall_v ask_v you_o how_o you_o can_v tell_v that_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o serve_v god_n you_o never_o try_v to_o purpose_n what_o it_o be_v to_o serve_v he_o in_o sincerity_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v go_v and_o report_n as_o before_o that_o you_o make_v your_o servant_n work_v for_o nothing_o you_o will_v say_v how_o can_v you_o tell_v that_o see_v you_o never_o try_v my_o service_n so_o may_v i_o say_v to_o such_o as_o complain_v of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n to_o be_v a_o vain_a service_n how_o can_v you_o tell_v it_o be_v so_o see_v you_o never_o make_v trial_n of_o it_o upon_o your_o own_o experience_n and_o therefore_o you_o be_v guilty_a of_o speak_v evil_a of_o the_o thing_n which_o you_o understand_v not_o 2.12_o 2_o pet._n 2.12_o three_o it_o be_v of_o use_n by_o way_n of_o inference_n to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o fault_n in_o carnal_a people_n much_o more_o in_o such_o as_o be_v spiritual_a and_o yet_o many_o of_o these_o be_v much_o to_o blame_v even_o about_o this_o very_a thing_n have_v strange_a thought_n about_o the_o vanity_n of_o god_n service_n &_o that_o upon_o ground_n both_o from_o themselves_o and_o other_o 1._o from_o themselves_o and_o they_o be_v two_o the_o one_o be_v the_o non-apprehension_n of_o any_o good_a get_v by_o that_o service_n that_o they_o ever_o do_v for_o god_n the_o other_o be_v that_o indiscernible_a difference_n in_v themselves_o between_o serve_v and_o not_o serve_v of_o god_n perform_v and_o omit_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n for_o the_o better_a settle_v of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o his_o way_n and_o service_n these_o ground_n of_o their_o mistake_n must_v be_v remove_v and_o their_o objection_n answer_v or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o the_o bare_a chide_n of_o they_o or_o lay_v of_o blame_n upon_o they_o that_o will_v pacify_v the_o soul_n or_o satisfy_v doubt_n and_o scruple_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o remove_v these_o let_n and_o to_o answer_v these_o objection_n obj._n 1_o first_o then_o the_o soul_n say_v what_o shall_v i_o do_v serve_v of_o god_n 6.33_o 2_o king_n 6.33_o or_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n any_o long_o i_o have_v spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n and_o take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n that_o way_n but_o i_o do_v not_o see_v that_o i_o be_o the_o better_a for_o any_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v do_v as_o these_o people_n here_o though_o they_o have_v offer_v many_o sacrifice_n yet_o afterward_o begin_v to_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o cast_v away_o we_o have_v offer_v many_o cattle_n and_o creature_n in_o sacrifice_n say_v they_o but_o we_o have_v better_o have_v sell_v they_o and_o lay_v out_o the_o money_n some_o other_o way_n for_o our_o comfortable_a subsistence_n so_o say_v many_o a_o soul_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v i_o have_v pray_v and_o mourn_v but_o nothing_o the_o better_a my_o prayer_n be_v not_o let_v into_o heaven_n but_o shut_v out_o my_o alm_n be_v not_o have_v in_o remembrance_n before_o god_n but_o forget_v my_o tear_n be_v spill_v and_o not_o bottle_a up_o my_o want_n be_v not_o supply_v my_o desire_n be_v not_o answer_v my_o corruption_n be_v not_o mortify_v i_o have_v take_v much_o pain_n in_o attend_v upon_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n but_o have_v get_v little_a or_o no_o good_a by_o they_o and_o not_o only_o ordinary_a but_o extraordinary_a mean_n have_v i_o use_v i_o have_v join_v fast_v to_o my_o prayer_n and_o yet_o all_o will_v do_v nothing_o i_o be_v among_o the_o people_n of_o god_n such_o a_o day_n and_o such_o a_o day_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o humiliation_n but_o alas_o i_o be_v never_o the_o better_a my_o heart_n be_v as_o hard_o at_o night_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o morning_n so_o that_o i_o have_v better_o have_v be_v about_o my_o call_n or_o the_o world_n for_o there_o i_o may_v have_v do_v or_o get_v some_o good_a for_o the_o body_n but_o here_o i_o get_v no_o good_a either_o for_o body_n or_o soul_n there_o i_o may_v
and_o and_o all_o on_o the_o sudden_a the_o soul_n be_v ready_a to_o cast_v away_o that_o confidence_n as_o nothing_o worth_a oh_o but_o say_v the_o apostle_n hold_v your_o hand_n and_o be_v well_o advise_v what_o you_o do_v be_v not_o so_o prodigal_a to_o cast_v away_o that_o in_o a_o pang_n or_o pittish_a mood_n which_o you_o be_v so_o long_a a_o get_n and_o cost_v you_o so_o dear_a prove_v and_o try_v your_o confidence_n if_o you_o will_v nay_o it_o be_v needful_a you_o shall_v do_v so_o but_o cast_v it_o not_o away_o or_o if_o satan_n wring_v your_o hold_n out_o of_o your_o hand_n and_o your_o confidence_n out_o of_o your_o heart_n by_o the_o strength_n of_o any_o violent_a temptation_n than_o indeed_o you_o be_v to_o be_v pity_v and_o your_o condition_n with_o much_o christian_a compassion_n to_o be_v lay_v to_o heart_n but_o for_o you_o to_o stand_v in_o your_o own_o light_n and_o to_o throw_v away_o such_o a_o stay_n to_o your_o soul_n by_o a_o wilful_a refusal_n of_o that_o mercy_n and_o denial_n of_o that_o grace_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v wrought_v in_o you_o and_o give_v you_o some_o experience_n of_o and_o that_o out_o of_o the_o pride_n of_o your_o heart_n because_o you_o can_v find_v a_o ground_n of_o your_o hold_v fast_o of_o a_o confidence_n in_v yourselves_o but_o must_v live_v upon_o free_a grace_n or_o out_o of_o discontentednesse_n of_o spirit_n that_o because_o you_o can_v affirm_v that_o full_a assurance_n of_o heaven_n and_o god_n love_n that_o you_o will_v have_v therefore_o you_o will_v have_v none_o at_o all_o because_o you_o may_v not_o carve_v yourselves_o and_o have_v whole_a loaf_n therefore_o you_o will_v scorn_v crumb_n and_o cast_v away_o piece_n if_o thus_o you_o do_v in_o stead_n of_o pity_n you_o shall_v deserve_v blame_n and_o as_o little_a as_o this_o confidence_n &_o wait_v upon_o god_n seem_v worth_a which_o you_o slight_a and_o be_v cast_v away_o as_o worth_n nothing_o yet_o believe_v i_o it_o be_v not_o in_o vain_a to_o hold_v fast_o upon_o a_o promise_n something_o will_v come_v at_o last_o though_o all_o seem_v but_o lose_v for_o the_o present_a and_o therefore_o cast_v not_o away_o your_o confidence_n which_o have_v great_a recompense_n of_o reward_n last_o general_n caution_n to_o all_o in_o general_n it_o be_v useful_a for_o all_o in_o general_a to_o warn_v every_o one_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o make_v void_a and_o vain_a the_o service_n of_o god_n to_o himself_o we_o have_v see_v and_o hear_v the_o evil_a of_o this_o sin_n of_o accuse_v the_o service_n of_o god_n for_o a_o vain_a service_n and_o how_o much_o wrong_n they_o do_v the_o lord_n and_o themselves_o that_o cast_v such_o a_o aspersion_n and_o unjust_a imputation_n upon_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o now_o if_o that_o shall_v become_v real_o so_o to_o we_o which_o be_v not_o so_o in_o it_o self_n nor_o to_o other_o and_o that_o whilst_o we_o blame_v other_o for_o say_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a we_o shall_v be_v those_o that_o shall_v make_v it_o vain_a to_o ourselves_o this_o will_v prove_v hard_a and_o sad_a in_o conclusion_n how_o will_v this_o make_v up_o the_o mouth_n of_o carnal_a loose_a libertine_n when_o they_o come_v at_o the_o judgement_n seat_n when_o those_o that_o will_v never_o spend_v time_n nor_o take_v pain_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n shall_v fare_v &_o speed_v as_o well_o as_o they_o that_o spend_v and_o take_v much_o time_n therein_o when_o those_o that_o will_v not_o be_v bring_v to_o make_v any_o show_n of_o goodness_n or_o take_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o any_o duty_n at_o all_o shall_v fare_v aswell_o as_o those_o that_o have_v a_o fair_a form_n of_o godliness_n and_o be_v very_o abundant_a in_o holy_a duty_n when_o they_o that_o have_v no_o prayer_n in_o their_o family_n so_o much_o as_o once_o in_o the_o week_n or_o month_n or_o year_n shall_v speed_v as_o well_o and_o alike_o with_o those_o that_o have_v prayer_n twice_o a_o day_n in_o a_o word_n when_o those_o that_o take_v their_o fill_n in_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n that_o cast_v off_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o almighty_a 21.14_o joh._n 21.14_o say_v depart_n from_o we_o for_o we_o desire_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thy_o way_n that_o be_v servant_n to_o their_o lust_n and_o not_o to_o god_n but_o run_v on_o in_o all_o excess_n of_o riot_n in_o sin_v with_o high_a hand_n and_o stiffeneck_n shall_v see_v they_o thrust_v out_o from_o god_n that_o wear_v his_o livery_n call_v he_o master_n and_o do_v much_o work_n in_o his_o service_n oh_o how_o wide_o will_v it_o open_v their_o mouth_n and_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o laugh_v in_o hell_n how_o will_v it_o make_v they_o laugh_v and_o triumph_n why_o certain_o it_o will_v be_v thus_o with_o very_a many_o to_o who_o the_o service_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v but_o a_o vain_a service_n and_o they_o shall_v lose_v all_o the_o time_n and_o pain_n that_o they_o have_v spend_v &_o take_v therein_o see_v mat._n 7_o chap._n in_o the_o 22_o and_o 23_o verse_n and_o luke_n 13.26_o where_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o many_o who_o have_v be_v in_o christ_n company_n and_o stand_v in_o christ_n room_n and_o do_v christ_n work_n shall_v yet_o be_v disclaim_v by_o he_o and_o exclude_v from_o he_o at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o therefore_o what_o need_n be_v there_o that_o we_o look_v well_o to_o it_o that_o though_o this_o service_n be_v not_o vain_a in_o itself_o yet_o that_o it_o prove_v not_o vain_a to_o we_o which_o that_o it_o may_v not_o do_v vain_a direction_n that_o the_o service_n of_o god_n the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n profitable_a unto_o we_o but_o without_o which_o can_v we_o do_v never_o so_o much_o and_o that_o in_o show_n never_o so_o well_o yet_o shall_v we_o be_v account_v but_o evil_a servant_n and_o this_o be_v all_o we_o shall_v have_v at_o god_n hand_n at_o last_o 50.11_o isa_n 50.11_o to_o lie_v down_o in_o sorrow_n direction_n 1_o the_o first_o thing_n that_o a_o soul_n must_v do_v that_o will_v not_o have_v the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n prove_v in_o vain_a to_o he_o be_v to_o get_v into_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o to_o be_v at_o agreement_n with_o he_o for_o who_o we_o do_v work_v i_o do_v not_o mean_v to_o covenant_n for_o wage_n and_o what_o thou_o shall_v have_v for_o thy_o work_n as_o if_o otherwise_o thou_o be_v it_o in_o danger_n to_o have_v nothing_o for_o there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o that_o but_o only_a covenant_n with_o he_o to_o be_v his_o servant_n to_o be_v one_o who_o he_o may_v please_v to_o own_o and_o look_v upon_o as_o one_o that_o do_v especial_o belong_v unto_o he_o this_o be_v to_o be_v in_o inward_a covenant_n with_o god_n for_o you_o be_v to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o secret_a league_n and_o covenant_n which_o be_v make_v and_o pass_v between_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n at_o its_o first_o conversion_n in_o which_o the_o lord_n for_o his_o part_n make_n tender_v and_o promise_v of_o free_a grace_n and_o mercy_n to_o the_o poor_a soul_n see_v itself_o lose_v and_o undo_v and_o the_o soul_n for_o its_o part_n be_v glad_a of_o god_n and_o mercy_n upon_o such_o fair_a term_n as_o he_o propound_v it_o upon_o accepts_z thereof_o and_o so_o the_o covenant_n be_v strike_v the_o soul_n be_v willing_a to_o become_v the_o lord_n and_o to_o give_v up_o itself_o to_o he_o and_o his_o service_n whole_o and_o free_o and_o the_o lord_n for_o his_o part_n be_v willing_a to_o accept_v of_o that_o soul_n and_o of_o such_o service_n as_o it_o be_v and_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o do_v for_o he_o to_o assist_v he_o in_o his_o undertake_n to_o overlook_v his_o fail_v and_o to_o reward_v his_o endeavour_n and_o so_o for_o ever_o after_o this_o the_o lord_n look_v upon_o this_o soul_n as_o a_o servant_n of_o he_o and_o as_o set_v on_o work_n by_o he_o and_o so_o intend_v the_o reward_v of_o he_o as_o his_o servant_n which_o before_o he_o do_v not_o but_o say_v as_o esay_n 1.12_o who_o have_v require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o i_o do_v require_v they_o but_o not_o of_o you_o and_o i_o will_v give_v a_o reward_n for_o the_o do_v of_o but_o lose_v he_o do_v but_o labour_n in_o vain_a 20._o verse_n 20._o the_o prophet_n say_v psal_n 139._o thou_o enemy_n take_v thy_o name_n in_o vain_a which_o hold_v very_o firm_a in_o this_o sense_n namely_o that_o whilst_o people_n remain_v enemy_n to_o god_n and_o be_v not_o true_o reconcile_v to_o to_o he_o through_o christ_n they_o take_v his_o name_n word_n sacrament_n and_o all_o cost_n that_o they_o be_v at_o about_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n who_o yet_o if_o they_o go_v on_o as_o they_o have_v begin_v will_v lose_v all_o at_o the_o last_o oh_o therefore_o let_v i_o prevail_v with_o so_o many_o of_o you_o this_o day_n as_o never_o take_v this_o course_n now_o to_o enter_v upon_o it_o get_v you_o home_o enter_v into_o your_o chamber_n and_o commune_v with_o your_o heart_n about_o your_o condition_n and_o this_o work_n labour_v to_o see_v your_o misery_n by_o nature_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o long_o as_o you_o stand_v in_o enmity_n with_o god_n and_o god_n with_o you_o beg_v as_o for_o more_o than_o your_o life_n to_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o he_o and_o be_v glad_a of_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o upon_o any_o term_n you_o may_v go_v on_o still_o in_o your_o old_a way_n of_o formality_n if_o you_o please_v without_o take_v this_o course_n as_o long_o and_o twice_o as_o long_o if_o you_o live_v as_o you_o have_v do_v think_v that_o if_o you_o be_v diligent_a in_o duty_n and_o painful_a in_o the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n especial_o with_o honest_a heart_n as_o you_o call_v they_o that_o then_o you_o shall_v not_o lose_v your_o labour_n but_o that_o god_n will_v reward_v you_o for_o the_o service_n you_o do_v and_o it_o may_v be_v that_o some_o of_o you_o may_v intend_v so_o to_o do_v notwithstanding_o what_o ever_o have_v be_v say_v against_o it_o and_o so_o they_o may_v if_o they_o please_v to_o their_o shame_n and_o heart-smart_n but_o if_o this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o true_a peace_n or_o profit_n the_o lord_n have_v not_o speak_v by_o i_o and_o when_o they_o have_v weary_v themselves_o in_o this_o their_o way_n and_o miss_v what_o they_o look_v for_o which_o they_o will_v most_o certain_o do_v if_o they_o look_v for_o any_o good_a then_o will_v they_o acknowledge_v the_o truth_n and_o necessity_n of_o this_o counsel_n and_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o will_v bewail_v that_o they_o take_v it_o not_o in_o time_n direction_n 2_o second_o if_o you_o will_v not_o have_v the_o service_n of_o god_n prove_v a_o vain_a service_n then_o take_v heed_n of_o a_o slighty_a spirit_n in_o the_o perform_n of_o it_o and_o of_o have_v low_a and_o mean_a thought_n of_o those_o duty_n that_o thou_o undertake_v the_o do_n of_o but_o labour_n for_o high_a and_o precious_a thought_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o this_o service_n and_o of_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n which_o thou_o come_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o that_o thou_o may_v look_v upon_o the_o service_n of_o god_n as_o honourable_a and_o much_o desirable_a service_n and_o the_o part_n and_o duty_n of_o this_o service_n as_o very_o profitable_a &_o as_o those_o mean_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v ordain_v for_o thy_o great_a good_a to_o look_v upon_o prayer_n as_o a_o profitable_a ordinance_n and_o mean_n very_o forcible_a with_o god_n to_o break_v open_a his_o treasure_n and_o to_o obtain_v all_o needful_a mercy_n by_o so_o for_o the_o word_n the_o sacrament_n and_o the_o rest_n many_o there_o be_v which_o perform_v many_o of_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n service_n but_o yet_o come_v not_o with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o be_v but_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o mean_v ordinary_a thing_n and_o that_o because_o they_o know_v not_o the_o worth_n and_o pretiousnesse_n of_o they_o and_o never_o find_v or_o get_v any_o great_a good_a by_o they_o when_o as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o be_v in_o themselves_o they_o come_v with_o low_a thought_n and_o slighty_a estimation_n to_o the_o ordinance_n and_o then_o no_o marvel_n they_o find_v they_o vain_a and_o unprofitable_a to_o they_o direction_n 3_o three_o he_o that_o will_v not_o have_v the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a unto_o he_o must_v look_v that_o he_o be_v faithful_a in_o the_o do_n of_o it_o and_o this_o faithfulness_n be_v to_o be_v show_v in_o these_o five_o thing_n carefulness_n carefulness_n faithfulness_n in_o god_n service_n to_o be_v show_v in_o 5._o thing_n carefulness_n diligence_n sincerity_n belief_n and_o perseverance_n first_o it_o be_v to_o be_v show_v in_o carefulness_n of_o universality_n of_o obedience_n that_o a_o man_n be_v careful_a in_o attend_v upon_o all_o god_n way_n and_o in_o do_v all_o that_o work_n that_o god_n set_v he_o about_o he_o be_v not_o a_o faithful_a servant_n that_o will_v pick_v and_o choose_v his_o work_n to_o do_v only_o that_o which_o like_v he_o and_o leave_v the_o rest_n so_o neither_o be_v he_o a_o faithful_a servant_n to_o god_n that_o will_v do_v only_o some_o not_o all_o that_o will_v attend_v upon_o god_n in_o some_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n but_o omit_v othersome_a and_o that_o can_v be_v content_a to_o put_v his_o hand_n to_o god_n work_n but_o not_o to_o his_o neck_n or_o his_o back_n to_o his_o cross_n or_o burden_n doing-worke_n will_v down_o but_o not_o suffering-worke_n well_o think_v better_o of_o it_o and_o balk_v none_o of_o god_n work_n but_o take_v it_o as_o it_o lie_v in_o order_n and_o come_v for_o that_o part_n of_o god_n service_n that_o thou_o neglecte_v may_v be_v that_o in_o the_o do_v whereof_o the_o lord_n may_v intend_v to_o show_v thou_o much_o mercy_n
