own_o conscience_n nor_o hearken_v to_o the_o importunity_n of_o their_o friend_n nor_o be_v persuade_v to_o consider_v what_o the_o probable_a end_n of_o all_o their_o action_n will_v be_v both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o these_o be_v all_o unthinking_a unconsider_v sinner_n but_o you_o will_v all_o confess_v that_o these_o man_n do_v not_o live_v as_o if_o they_o be_v to_o be_v judge_v and_o therefore_o if_o we_o believe_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v none_o of_o we_o ought_v to_o live_v thus_o we_o ought_v to_o consider_v well_o beforehand_o what_o we_o do_v that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o give_v a_o reasonable_a account_n of_o it_o when_o we_o have_v do_v it_o for_o if_o we_o must_v give_v a_o reason_n of_o our_o action_n when_o we_o have_v do_v they_o we_o ought_v to_o know_v a_o reason_n for_o they_o before_o we_o do_v they_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v accustom_v our_o mind_n to_o a_o grave_n and_o serious_a consideration_n of_o thing_n to_o live_v by_o reason_n not_o by_o humour_n and_o fancy_n not_o by_o the_o impetus_fw-la and_o fury_n of_o passion_n which_o be_v a_o very_a ill_a counsellor_n much_o less_o to_o pursue_v our_o lust_n with_o a_o affect_a and_o resolve_v ignorance_n and_o blindness_n for_o all_o this_o will_v not_o prevent_v our_o be_v judge_v but_o will_v make_v we_o very_o unable_a to_o give_v a_o good_a account_n of_o ourselves_o when_o we_o be_v 2._o as_o we_o must_v act_v with_o great_a consideration_n so_o we_o must_v make_v it_o the_o stand_a principle_n and_o rule_n of_o our_o life_n never_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o we_o can_v give_v a_o good_a account_n of_o either_o what_o we_o know_v be_v our_o duty_n or_o at_o lest_o what_o we_o be_v satisfy_v be_v very_o lawful_a and_o innocent_a to_o be_v do_v for_o if_o we_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o we_o can_v account_v for_o for_o which_o our_o own_o mind_n condemn_v we_o how_o can_v we_o appear_v with_o any_o hope_n and_o confidence_n at_o the_o tribunal_n of_o god_n when_o man_n transgress_v a_o know_a duty_n they_o be_v self-condemned_n and_o god_n need_v not_o judge_v they_o but_o only_o execute_v the_o sentence_n and_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n to_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o and_o yet_o to_o venture_v upon_o such_o action_n for_o which_o our_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o and_o for_o which_o we_o know_v god_n will_v as_o certain_o condemn_v we_o as_o our_o own_o conscience_n do_v be_v folly_n and_o distraction_n since_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v our_o great_a care_n and_o concernment_n shall_v be_v that_o when_o we_o be_v judge_v we_o may_v not_o be_v condemn_v and_o the_o most_o effectual_a way_n to_o prevent_v this_o be_v to_o do_v nothing_o which_o our_o conscience_n condemn_v it_o be_v possible_a indeed_o that_o man_n who_o sin_n wilful_o against_o a_o know_a duty_n may_v recover_v themselves_o by_o repentance_n and_o obtain_v mercy_n through_o the_o merit_n and_o mediation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o it_o do_v not_o become_v any_o man_n who_o believe_v a_o judgement_n to_o sin_n that_o grace_n may_v abound_v these_o hope_n very_o often_o deceive_v man_n and_o will_v always_o do_v so_o till_o they_o come_v to_o this_o resolution_n never_o to_o violate_v a_o know_a duty_n to_o provoke_v the_o justice_n or_o to_o exercise_v the_o patience_n and_o forbearance_n of_o god._n there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o escape_v the_o condemnation_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n but_o by_o a_o resolve_a obedience_n to_o the_o divine_a law_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o believe_v we_o shall_v be_v judge_v nothing_o can_v be_v more_o necessary_a nor_o more_o become_v then_o to_o make_v this_o the_o constant_a rule_n of_o our_o action_n never_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n for_o which_o we_o know_v god_n will_v condemn_v we_o nothing_o but_o what_o can_v we_o account_v for_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v be_v prepare_v for_o judgement_n whenever_o it_o come_v 3._o it_o become_v those_o who_o must_v be_v judge_v to_o judge_v themselves_o and_o to_o take_v a_o frequent_a and_o impartial_a account_n of_o their_o own_o life_n and_o action_n this_o be_v no_o more_o than_o every_o steward_n do_v who_o cast_v up_o his_o book_n and_o adju_v his_o account_n himself_o before_o he_o present_v they_o to_o his_o lord_n the_o truth_n be_v it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n who_o know_v he_o shall_v be_v judge_v not_o to_o be_v very_o solicitous_a to_o know_v what_o his_o judgement_n shall_v be_v and_o this_o every_o man_n may_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n know_v who_o impartial_o examine_v his_o own_o conscience_n for_o so_o st._n john_n tell_v we_o if_o our_o heart_n or_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o god_n be_v great_a than_o our_o heart_n and_o know_v all_o thing_n but_o if_o our_o heart_n condemn_v we_o not_o then_o have_v we_o confidence_n towards_o god_n 1_o john_n 3.20_o 21._o so_o that_o if_o our_o life_n have_v be_v innocent_a and_o virtuous_a and_o such_o as_o a_o well-informed_a conscience_n approve_v this_o will_v give_v infinite_a peace_n and_o satisfaction_n to_o we_o and_o fill_v we_o with_o divine_a joy_n with_o a_o plerophory_n of_o hope_n and_o assurance_n but_o if_o we_o shall_v not_o find_v thing_n so_o well_o though_o upon_o such_o a_o strict_a examination_n our_o conscience_n shall_v be_v very_o quarrelsome_a and_o uneasy_a and_o threaten_v the_o vengeance_n of_o god_n against_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v much_o more_o desirable_a to_o hear_v our_o conscience_n chide_v and_o condemn_v we_o than_o to_o hear_v our_o final_a sentence_n from_o the_o mouth_n of_o our_o judge_n go_v you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n be_v not_o final_a for_o conscience_n be_v rather_o our_o monitor_n than_o our_o judge_n it_o tell_v we_o what_o will_v be_v if_o we_o do_v not_o take_v care_n to_o prevent_v it_o not_o what_o certain_o be_v and_o shall_v be_v and_o therefore_o we_o have_v this_o advantage_n by_o the_o rebuke_n and_o censure_n of_o conscience_n to_o know_v what_o be_v amiss_o and_o what_o we_o must_v correct_v and_o amend_v nay_o a_o frequent_a examination_n of_o ourselves_o will_v keep_v a_o perpetual_a watch_n and_o guard_n upon_o our_o life_n after_o our_o great_a care_n and_o caution_n a_o great_a many_o thing_n will_v be_v hasty_o do_v and_o say_v which_o we_o can_v reconcile_v with_o the_o rule_n of_o prudence_n and_o decency_n and_o strict_a virtue_n but_o he_o who_o frequent_o call_v himself_o to_o a_o account_n and_o observe_v all_o these_o defect_n which_o it_o may_v be_v other_o man_n be_v never_o sensible_a of_o will_v attain_v a_o habitual_a caution_n and_o watchfulness_n and_o improve_v into_o great_a exactness_n of_o conversation_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n and_o beauty_n of_o virtue_n some_o of_o the_o philosopher_n think_v it_o a_o very_a good_a rule_n to_o call_v themselves_o to_o a_o account_n every_o night_n for_o what_o they_o have_v do_v that_o day_n which_o will_v make_v we_o reverence_v ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o conscience_n but_o there_o be_v much_o more_o reason_n to_o do_v so_o when_o we_o remember_v that_o god_n observe_v all_o our_o action_n and_o will_v judge_v we_o for_o they_o the_o judgement_n of_o our_o conscience_n as_o i_o observe_v to_o you_o before_o be_v a_o natural_a presage_v of_o god_n judgement_n for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o reason_n why_o our_o conscience_n shall_v judge_v we_o but_o that_o god_n will_v and_o then_o the_o reason_n be_v very_o strong_a also_o that_o if_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o we_o ought_v to_o judge_v ourselves_o for_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a office_n and_o ministry_n of_o conscience_n in_o subordination_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n ii_o let_v we_o keep_v our_o eye_n perpetual_o on_o a_o future_a judgement_n for_o the_o direction_n and_o government_n of_o our_o life_n for_o this_o will_v furnish_v we_o with_o such_o principle_n of_o action_n as_o can_v be_v so_o well_o learn_v any_o other_o way_n 1._o as_o first_o it_o teach_v we_o above_o all_o thing_n to_o take_v care_n to_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o god_n which_o be_v the_o only_a principle_n of_o true_a religion_n and_o universal_a obedience_n nothing_o be_v a_o act_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o it_o respect_v god_n and_o be_v refer_v whole_o to_o he_o to_o perform_v all_o the_o act_n of_o worship_n though_o with_o never_o so_o great_a pomp_n and_o ceremony_n and_o external_a appearance_n of_o devotion_n to_o do_v never_o so_o many_o good_a action_n to_o be_v see_v and_o to_o be_v praise_v by_o man_n or_o to_o serve_v some_o secular_a interest_n by_o it_o be_v not_o religion_n but_o such_o man_n if_o they_o meet_v with_o what_o they_o expect_v have_v their_o reward_n all_o that_o
and_o unriddle_v all_o the_o secret_a mystery_n of_o it_o when_o god_n come_v to_o judge_v the_o world_n i●_n be_v to_o justify_v himself_o as_o well_o as_o to_o judge_v man_n for_o what_o st._n paul_n say_v be_v most_o proper_o applicable_a to_o the_o last_o judgement_n let_v god_n be_v true_a and_o every_o man_n a_o liar_n as_o it_o be_v write_v that_o thou_o may_v be_v justify_v in_o thy_o say_n and_o may_v overcome_v when_o thou_o be_v judge_v 3_o rom._n 4._o and_o st._n jude_n make_v this_o one_o great_a end_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n the_o lord_n shall_v come_v with_o ten_o thousand_o of_o his_o saint_n to_o execute_v judgement_n upon_o all_o to_o convince_v all_o that_o be_v ungodly_a among_o they_o of_o all_o their_o ungodly_a deed_n which_o they_o have_v ungodly_a commit_v and_o of_o all_o their_o hard_a speech_n which_o ungodly_a sinner_n have_v speak_v against_o he_o judas_n 14_o 15._o how_o many_o such_o hard_a speech_n do_v we_o daily_o hear_v against_o the_o divine_a providence_n and_o how_o hard_o be_v good_a man_n who_o know_v but_o little_a of_o the_o matter_n put_v to_o it_o to_o answer_v the_o cavil_n and_o reproach_n of_o atheist_n and_o infidel_n we_o can_v indeed_o say_v enough_o in_o general_a to_o vindicate_v the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o justice_n and_o goodness_n but_o there_o be_v a_o thousand_o particular_a case_n which_o seem_v very_o hard_a which_o we_o can_v say_v nothing_o to_o because_o we_o know_v nothing_o of_o they_o but_o when_o all_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v summon_v before_o god_n tribunal_n all_o the_o age_n and_o generation_n of_o man_n we_o shall_v then_o have_v a_o perfect_a history_n of_o providence_n and_o that_o will_v expound_v the_o reason_n of_o thing_n which_o be_v now_o obscure_a when_o we_o shall_v hear_v how_o every_o particular_a man_n every_o age_n and_o generation_n of_o man_n every_o country_n and_o nation_n have_v behave_v themselves_o and_o how_o god_n deal_v with_o they_o what_o talent_n they_o be_v entrust_v with_o and_o what_o account_v they_o give_v then_o all_o mouth_n will_v be_v stop_v and_o the_o whole_a world_n will_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n 3_o rom._n 19_o then_o we_o shall_v see_v a_o entire_a chain_n of_o providence_n and_o all_o the_o various_a and_o intricate_a turn_n of_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n in_o its_o different_a form_n and_o administration_n but_o still_o within_o the_o sphere_n and_o circle_n of_o justice_n and_o goodness_n how_o shall_v we_o then_o admire_v god_n when_o we_o shall_v see_v all_o these_o wonderful_a and_o curious_a scene_n unfold_v when_o we_o shall_v observe_v the_o gradual_a and_o regular_a advances_n of_o goodness_n in_o the_o several_a age_n of_o the_o world_n proportion_v to_o the_o want_v and_o capacity_n of_o man_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o full_a maturity_n and_o perfection_n of_o gospel-grace_n what_o a_o delightful_a prospect_n will_v this_o be_v to_o good_a man_n how_o will_v it_o enlarge_v their_o knowledge_n increase_v their_o wonder_n inflame_v their_o devotion_n how_o will_v it_o confound_v bad_a man_n especial_o all_o the_o profane_a scoffer_n at_o god_n and_o his_o providence_n how_o will_v this_o aggravate_v and_o increase_v their_o torment_n that_o they_o will_v be_v force_v to_o admire_v and_o justify_v god_n in_o their_o own_o damnation_n which_o must_v turn_v all_o their_o rage_n and_o fury_n upon_o themselves_o this_o be_v reason_n enough_o why_o god_n shall_v judge_v the_o world_n all_o together_o to_o justify_v himself_o to_o all_o his_o creature_n and_o to_o make_v a_o glorious_a discovery_n of_o all_o the_o wonder_n and_o mystery_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o providence_n good_a man_n see_v enough_o at_o present_a to_o admire_v and_o praise_n god_n but_o now_o as_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o we_o know_v in_o part_n and_o we_o prophesy_v in_o part_n but_o when_o that_o which_o be_v perfect_a be_v come_v then_o that_o which_o be_v in_o part_n shall_v be_v do_v away_o when_o i_o be_v a_o child_n i_o speak_v as_o a_o child_n i_o understand_v as_o a_o child_n i_o think_v as_o a_o child_n but_o when_o i_o become_v a_o man_n i_o put_v away_o childish_a thing_n for_o now_o we_o see_v through_o a_o glass_n dark_o but_o then_o face_n to_o face_n now_o i_o know_v in_o part_n but_o then_o shall_v i_o know_v even_o as_o also_o i_o be_o know_v 1_o cor._n 13.9_o 10_o 11_o 12._o the_o divine_a wisdom_n will_v never_o appear_v so_o glorious_a as_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n because_o it_o will_v never_o be_v so_o perfect_o know_v as_o then_o when_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v glorify_v in_o his_o saint_n and_o admire_v in_o all_o they_o that_o believe_v 2_o thess._n 1.10_o what_o good_a man_n will_v not_o long_o to_o see_v that_o bless_a day_n which_o will_v perfect_v his_o soul_n with_o the_o knowledge_n and_o love_n and_o admiration_n of_o god_n and_o give_v he_o such_o clear_a raise_v and_o divine_a thought_n and_o passion_n as_o be_v fit_a for_o heaven_n and_o the_o immediate_a presence_n of_o god_n whither_o he_o be_v a_o go_v what_o wise_a man_n will_v not_o reselve_v to_o be_v very_o good_a that_o at_o that_o day_n he_o may_v see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n with_o out_o terror_n and_o astonishment_n with_o all_o those_o rapture_n and_o ecstasy_n with_o which_o such_o new_a and_o bright_a appearance_n of_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n will_v fill_v the_o soul_n 2._o god_n summon_v all_o mankind_n together_o to_o judgement_n that_o man_n and_o angel_n may_v be_v witness_n of_o his_o equal_a and_o impartial_a justice_n we_o be_v all_o equal_o god_n creature_n the_o rich_a and_o the_o poor_a the_o honourable_a and_o the_o vile_a and_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o subject_n be_v alike_o to_o he_o and_o justice_n require_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v alike_o that_o the_o just_a judge_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v respect_v no_o man_n person_n in_o judgement_n now_o there_o be_v no_o such_o way_n to_o convince_v all_o the_o world_n that_o god_n be_v a_o equal_a and_o impartial_a that_o be_v a_o very_a just_a and_o righteous_a judge_n as_o to_o judge_v all_o the_o world_n together_o for_o than_o they_o themselves_o may_v see_v whether_o god_n be_v partial_a or_o not_o but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o i_o mean_v by_o this_o for_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n be_v very_o liable_a to_o the_o charge_n of_o partiality_n that_o he_o have_v not_o a_o equal_a regard_n to_o all_o his_o creature_n i_o do_v not_o mean_v with_o reference_n to_o their_o fortune_n and_o station_n in_o this_o world_n that_o some_o be_v rich_a other_o poor_a some_o prince_n and_o noble_n entrust_v with_o great_a power_n other_o subject_n and_o expose_v to_o the_o will_n and_o lust_n of_o prince_n for_o this_o be_v more_o easy_o account_v for_o such_o different_a rank_n of_o man_n be_v necessary_a to_o good_a order_n and_o government_n in_o the_o world_n but_o i_o mean_v with_o respect_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o their_o eternal_a state_n that_o god_n have_v not_o take_v equal_a care_n to_o instruct_v all_o mankind_n in_o their_o duty_n to_o acquaint_v they_o with_o the_o danger_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o the_o next_o life_n and_o the_o certainty_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o this_o be_v too_o visible_a to_o be_v deny_v god_n suffer_v mankind_n to_o fall_v into_o idolatry_n and_o when_o they_o have_v corrupt_v their_o natural_a notion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a send_v no_o prophet_n among_o they_o to_o instruct_v they_o better_o and_o when_o after_o some_o age_n he_o call_v abraham_n out_o of_o ur_fw-la of_o the_o chaldee_n and_o have_v try_v his_o faith_n and_o obedience_n enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o he_o yet_o he_o confine_v his_o covenant_n to_o his_o posterity_n who_o he_o choose_v for_o his_o peculiar_a people_n and_o take_v no_o visible_a care_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n and_o though_o this_o be_v a_o great_a privilege_n of_o israel_n above_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n yet_o the_o moysaicall_a law_n be_v but_o a_o weak_a and_o imperfect_a dispensation_n but_o a_o childish_a pedagogie_n and_o the_o jewish_a church_n but_o in_o the_o state_n of_o servant_n or_o of_o a_o heir_n under_o age._n and_o though_o god_n do_v at_o last_o send_v christ_n into_o the_o world_n to_o make_v a_o perfect_a revelation_n of_o his_o will_n yet_o it_o be_v towards_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o what_o a_o wonderful_a difference_n have_v this_o make_v between_o those_o who_o enjoy_v the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n as_o if_o they_o have_v not_o all_o the_o same_o maker_n or_o be_v not_o equal_o his_o creature_n and_o yet_o how_o little_a a_o part_n of_o the_o world_n be_v there_o still_o which_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v
quality_n too_o and_o deal_v with_o they_o like_o prince_n or_o noble_n or_o gentleman_n as_o one_o unfortunate_a gentleman_n express_v himself_o not_o many_o year_n since_o at_o the_o gallow_n and_o i_o fear_v therein_o speak_v the_o secret_a thought_n and_o hope_n of_o many_o other_o so_o that_o if_o these_o man_n believe_v they_o shall_v be_v judge_v yet_o they_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o we_o must_v bear_v the_o guilt_n of_o they_o too_o and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o what_o a_o terrible_a account_n have_v some_o man_n to_o make_v which_o they_o never_o think_v of_o how_o many_o have_v st._n john_n tell_v we_o that_o if_o our_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o god_n will_v condemn_v we_o but_o if_o our_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v we_o neither_o will_n god_n condemn_v we_o he_o mean_v by_o conscience_n that_o judgement_n which_o man_n make_v of_o themselves_o by_o compare_v their_o life_n and_o action_n with_o the_o rule_n by_o which_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o for_o conscience_n judge_n not_o by_o make_v new_a and_o arbitrary_a rule_n of_o judgement_n but_o by_o give_v testimony_n to_o our_o life_n and_o action_n the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n be_v no_o more_o but_o this_o whether_o we_o have_v obey_v or_o disobey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n whether_o we_o have_v do_v those_o thing_n which_o the_o gospel_n threaten_v to_o punish_v or_o which_o it_o promise_v to_o reward_v but_o when_o we_o judge_v our_o action_n by_o false_a notion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a contrary_a to_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n we_o judge_v by_o a_o false_a certain_o know_v what_o their_o sentence_n shall_v be_v and_o a_o three_o sort_n may_v know_v the_o great_a danger_n they_o be_v in_o if_o they_o will_v but_o listen_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n man_n who_o conscience_n absolute_o condemn_v they_o may_v certain_o expect_v that_o god_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o when_o their_o guilt_n be_v so_o notorious_a that_o they_o be_v force_v to_o condemn_v themselves_o why_o shall_v they_o think_v that_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a judge_n will_v not_o condemn_v they_o those_o who_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o shall_v certain_o be_v pardon_v and_o reward_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n those_o who_o conscience_n will_v neither_o condemn_v nor_o absolve_v they_o but_o do_v both_o by_o turn_n be_v in_o a_o very_a doubtful_a and_o hazardous_a state_n their_o salvation_n as_o yet_o be_v very_o uncertain_a and_o it_o concern_v they_o to_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o to_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v their_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a and_o shall_v not_o this_o teach_v we_o to_o reverence_v the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n as_o a_o divine_a sentence_n not_o to_o provoke_v our_o conscience_n to_o condemn_v we_o to_o obey_v their_o admonition_n and_o to_o reform_v at_o their_o rebuke_n and_o censure_n what_o will_v sinner_n think_v shall_v they_o hear_v themselves_o condemn_v by_o god_n every_o time_n they_o commit_v a_o know_v and_o wilful_a sin_n and_o yet_o conscience_n be_v the_o tribunal_n of_o god_n judge_n for_o god_n and_o condemn_v we_o in_o god_n name_n and_o by_o his_o authority_n and_o god_n will_v confirm_v and_o execute_v its_o sentence_n and_o therefore_o conscience_n be_v a_o very_a venerable_a judge_n and_o ought_v we_o not_o diligent_o to_o hearken_v to_o that_o judgement_n which_o conscience_n pass_v on_o we_o this_o i_o be_o sure_a be_v of_o vast_a concernment_n both_o to_o bad_a and_o to_o good_a man_n whether_o it_o
