foul_a and_o the_o most_o disloyal_a that_o ever_o tread_v upon_o the_o ground_n beginning_n as_o the_o divine_a physician_n with_o judas_n who_o have_v the_o most_o deadly_a disease_n and_o hasten_v reformation_n be_v the_o best_a ground_v and_o the_o most_o powerful_a which_o begin_v from_o the_o high_a descend_v from_o the_o head_n unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o body_n that_o holy_a apostle_n see_v his_o redeemer_n at_o his_o foot_n be_v humble_v and_o confound_v before_o he_o touch_v they_o he_o that_o have_v walk_v upon_o the_o water_n and_o trample_v upon_o the_o wave_n sink_v deep_a in_o this_o basin_n through_o love_n than_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o sea_n through_o fear_n see_v a_o humility_n so_o beyond_o all_o measure_n and_o that_o his_o god_n be_v down_o upon_o his_o knee_n at_o his_o foot_n he_o be_v in_o such_o a_o amazement_n that_o he_o deny_v they_o he_o say_v lord_n thou_o shall_v not_o wash_v my_o foot_n o_o what_o a_o high_a acknowledgement_n be_v this_o of_o st._n peter_n when_o he_o say_v lord_n will_v thou_o wash_v my_o foot_n it_o be_v in_o its_o kind_n a_o high_a one_o than_o when_o he_o confess_v he_o near_o caesarea_n he_o then_o know_v he_o and_o confess_v he_o to_o be_v god_n but_o he_o do_v not_o know_v himself_o but_o now_o peter_n acknowledge_v he_o to_o be_v god_n infinite_a and_o omnipotent_a and_o himself_o to_o be_v a_o wretched_a weak_a man_n and_o a_o most_o miserable_a sinner_n many_o pretend_v to_o know_v god_n and_o be_v ignorant_a of_o themselves_o but_o they_o know_v he_o indeed_o who_o by_o his_o divine_a light_n come_v to_o discover_v their_o own_o darkness_n lord_n will_v thou_o wash_v my_o foot_n thou_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n and_o i_o a_o little_a dust_n of_o the_o earth_n thou_o the_o creator_n and_o i_o the_o vile_a of_o all_o creature_n thou_o the_o eternal_a greatness_n of_o the_o creation_n the_o soul_n of_o all_o that_o life_n and_o i_o the_o fraile_v the_o mean_a of_o all_o that_o die_v thou_o my_o master_n and_o i_o thy_o disciple_n thou_o the_o king_n and_o crown_n of_o angel_n and_o i_o a_o poor_a simple_a fisherman_n nay_o which_o be_v worse_o a_o sinful_a worm_n and_o therefore_o more_o base_a than_o any_o of_o those_o that_o crawl_v upon_o the_o ground_n thou_o that_o be_v innocency_n adn_o goodness_n itself_o upon_o thy_o knee_n at_o the_o foot_n of_o my_o sin_n and_o of_o my_o wickedness_n final_o o_o my_o jesus_n thou_o who_o art_n great_a than_o the_o great_a do_v thou_o kneel_v at_o my_o foot_n who_o be_o less_o than_o the_o least_o of_o thy_o mercy_n thus_o the_o humility_n of_o that_o love_a disciple_n oppose_v that_o of_o his_o master_n with_o a_o holy_a contention_n while_o all_o stand_v look_v and_o admire_v to_o behold_v which_o will_v get_v the_o victory_n whether_o the_o human_a nature_n know_v the_o infinite_a height_n of_o the_o divine_a or_o the_o divine_a know_v the_o infinite_a misery_n of_o the_o humane_a it_o seem_v more_o just_a that_o here_o peter_n shall_v have_v overcome_v god_n than_o god_n peter_n as_o it_o be_v more_o reasonable_a that_o man_n shall_v serve_v god_n than_o that_o god_n shall_v serve_v man._n it_o be_v the_o part_n of_o man_n to_o obey_v and_o of_o god_n to_o command_v to_o man_n it_o belong_v to_o serve_v and_o to_o god_n to_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v serve_v love_v and_o adore_v this_o indeed_o be_v a_o mystery_n of_o love_n and_o divine_a charity_n and_o he_o show_v this_o excessive_a kindness_n to_o oblige_v and_o to_o inflame_v they_o to_o he_o and_o to_o one_o another_o by_o his_o example_n say_v if_o i_o be_v your_o master_n and_o your_o lord_n have_v wash_v your_o foot_n you_o ought_v also_o to_o wash_v one_o another_o foot_n that_o love_n which_o make_v he_o be_v god_n to_o become_v man_n make_v he_o be_v man_n to_o humble_v himself_o before_o man._n and_o that_o sovereign_a lord_n never_o take_v a_o right_a course_n for_o that_o high_a intent_n than_o by_o humble_v and_o prostrate_v himself_o to_o wash_v to_o cleanse_v and_o to_o purify_v man._n he_o make_v himself_o man_n that_o he_o may_v redeem_v he_o and_o do_v it_o seem_v much_o for_o god_n be_v become_v man_n to_o kneel_v down_o to_o wash_v he_o yes_o dear_a jesus_n it_o be_v much_o much_o beyond_o expression_n for_o nothing_o of_o all_o this_o can_v be_v deserve_v by_o man._n he_o do_v not_o deserve_v any_o remedy_n because_o he_o have_v be_v the_o author_n of_o his_o own_o misery_n but_o thy_o unbounded_a thy_o unspeakable_a compassion_n look_v upon_o his_o necessity_n and_o not_o upon_o his_o demerit_n whither_o dear_a saviour_n shall_v the_o high_a expression_n of_o thy_o love_n extend_v where_o shall_v this_o infinite_a charity_n of_o thou_o be_v limit_v behold_v lord_n we_o be_v man_n that_o be_v to_o say_v mere_a misery_n and_o wickedness_n behold_v lord_n thou_o be_v god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o most_o sovereign_a power_n and_o supreme_a majesty_n do_v thou_o so_o far_o abase_v thy_o divinity_n as_o to_o drag_v it_o upon_o the_o earth_n within_o thy_o humanity_n be_v it_o not_o enough_o for_o thou_o to_o make_v thyself_o man_n unless_o thou_o humble_a and_o prostrate_a thyself_o before_o man_n who_o can_v see_v god_n at_o his_o foot_n without_o fall_v into_o a_o ecstasy_n of_o astonishment_n and_o without_o give_v up_o his_o life_n through_o a_o excessive_a humility_n who_o can_v choose_v but_o die_v with_o shame_n and_o confusion_n to_o see_v so_o unfitting_a a_o in-equality_n i_o do_v not_o wonder_v that_o st._n peter_n resist_v it_o for_o beside_o that_o he_o know_v that_o his_o master_n be_v god_n and_o he_o a_o vile_a creature_n he_o love_v his_o god_n and_o he_o love_v his_o master_n extreme_o much_o and_o in_o the_o same_o proportion_n that_o he_o love_v he_o be_v the_o trouble_n he_o feel_v to_o see_v he_o kneel_v at_o his_o foot_n since_o he_o know_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o earthly_a creature_n to_o serve_v and_o adore_v he_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o peter_z at_o last_o yield_v to_o christ_n it_o be_v most_o just_a that_o man_n shall_v yield_v to_o god_n since_o the_o great_a humility_n lie_v in_o the_o great_a obedience_n the_o disciple_n therefore_o must_v obey_v his_o master_n and_o the_o servant_n his_o lord_n our_o saviour_n tell_v he_o that_o if_o he_o will_v not_o be_v wash_v and_o purify_v he_o can_v have_v no_o share_n in_o his_o redemption_n at_o the_o hear_n of_o which_o terrible_a sentence_n peter_n offer_v he_o not_o only_o his_o foot_n to_o be_v wash_v but_o his_o hand_n and_o his_o head_n also_o to_o this_o christ_n reply_v he_o that_o be_v wash_v need_v not_o save_v only_o to_o wash_v his_o foot_n but_o be_v clean_a all_o over_o that_o be_v he_o that_o have_v be_v already_o wash_v in_o the_o laver_n of_o baptism_n need_v only_o to_o wash_v the_o foot_n of_o his_o affection_n which_o from_o the_o earth_n and_o misery_n of_o our_o inclination_n and_o passion_n rise_v up_o to_o the_o heart_n hereby_o the_o redeemer_n of_o soul_n signify_v that_o purity_n wherewith_o we_o ought_v to_o prepare_v ourselves_o for_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n for_o before_o he_o consecrate_v that_o he_o in_o the_o wash_n his_o disciple_n foot_n give_v they_o a_o example_n of_o humility_n and_o resignation_n and_o in_o the_o water_n express_v the_o virtue_n of_o those_o penitent_a tear_n wherewith_o they_o be_v to_o wash_v their_o sin_n and_o bewail_v their_o misery_n and_o by_o not_o suffer_v the_o dust_n of_o the_o earth_n to_o remain_v upon_o their_o foot_n teach_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v much_o less_o suffer_v inordinate_a affection_n to_o remain_v in_o their_o heart_n in_o short_a our_o bless_a lord_n wash_v the_o foot_n of_o all_o the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o among_o the_o rest_n those_o of_o the_o traitor_n judas_n who_o cruel_a obstinacy_n be_v so_o great_a that_o neither_o the_o touch_v they_o with_o those_o divine_a hand_n nor_o the_o bring_v they_o so_o near_o to_o the_o compassionate_a breast_n of_o the_o redeemer_n of_o soul_n can_v mollify_v the_o mean_n be_v move_v to_o do_v right_a and_o to_o hearken_v to_o the_o petition_n of_o the_o oppress_a widow_n how_o much_o more_o will_v god_n hear_v thy_o prayer_n if_o thou_o continue_v instant_a in_o solicit_v his_o divine_a majesty_n if_o at_o the_o first_o thy_o request_n be_v not_o grant_v yet_o cease_v not_o thy_o address_n nor_o give_v over_o pray_v but_o contend_v and_o wrestle_v as_o it_o be_v with_o god_n till_o thou_o gain_v a_o hear_n god_n love_v such_o a_o holy_a violence_n first_o see_v that_o the_o matter_n of_o thy_o petition_n be_v just_a lawful_a and_o convenient_a and_o then_o thou_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o obtain_v they_o or_o something_o better_o if_o thou_o persevere_a with_o faith_n and_o patience_n another_o most_o necessary_a duty_n be_v very_o strong_o enforce_v in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o king_n which_o will_v take_v account_n of_o his_o servant_n i_o mean_v the_o duty_n of_o forgive_a offence_n and_o injury_n when_o he_o begin_v to_o reckon_v with_o they_o one_o be_v bring_v to_o he_o which_o owe_v he_o ten_o thousand_o talent_n but_o be_v utter_o uncapable_a of_o ever_o discharge_v so_o vast_a a_o debt_n he_o fall_v down_o before_o his_o lord_n and_o with_o great_a humility_n and_o earnestness_n entreat_v he_o to_o have_v patience_n with_o he_o whereupon_o he_o free_o forgive_v he_o the_o whole_a sum._n but_o this_o same_o servant_n afterward_o severe_o exact_v a_o far_o less_o considerable_a debt_n of_o a_o hundred_o penny_n of_o one_o of_o his_o fellow-servant_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o entreaty_n cast_v he_o into_o prison_n till_o payment_n shall_v be_v make_v his_o lord_n thus_o expostulate_v with_o he_o o_o thou_o wicked_a servant_n i_o forgive_v thou_o all_o that_o debt_n because_o thou_o desire_v i_o shall_v not_o thou_o also_o have_v have_v compassion_n on_o thy_o fellow-servant_n even_o as_o i_o have_v pity_n on_o thou_o and_o his_o lord_n be_v wroth_a and_o deliver_v he_o to_o the_o tormentor_n till_o he_o shall_v pay_v all_o that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o this_o be_v our_o case_n as_o the_o servant_n debt_n to_o his_o master_n be_v great_a and_o important_a and_o that_o of_o his_o fellow-servant_n to_o he_o but_o trivial_a and_o inconsiderable_a so_o our_o offence_n against_o god_n be_v infinite_a and_o of_o a_o provoke_a nature_n and_o the_o injury_n of_o our_o fellow-creature_n to_o we_o be_v but_o few_o and_o of_o small_a importance_n if_o therefore_o we_o desire_v god_n to_o pardon_v our_o heinous_a and_o often-repeated_n sin_n against_o he_o how_o can_v we_o refuse_v to_o pardon_v the_o petty_a and_o small_a affront_v of_o our_o brethren_n with_o what_o modesty_n can_v thou_o who_o deny_v to_o forgive_v thy_o brother_n one_o single_a trespass_n expect_v that_o god_n shall_v forgive_v thou_o ten_o thousand_o or_o how_o can_v thou_o hope_v for_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n who_o be_v most_o cruel_a and_o unmerciful_a to_o other_o revenge_n as_o it_o be_v a_o unchristian_a principle_n so_o it_o tend_v direct_o to_o unqualifie_v we_o for_o forgiveness_n and_o be_v uncapable_a of_o the_o least_o rational_a defence_n for_o no_o man_n ever_o do_v or_o can_v forgive_v his_o neighbour_n so_o many_o provocation_n and_o offence_n as_o he_o himself_o have_v need_v to_o be_v forgive_v by_o god_n which_o be_v a_o eternal_a reason_n and_o motive_n to_o incite_v we_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o charity_n and_o mercy_n and_o can_v fail_v to_o work_v upon_o ingenuous_a and_o consider_a mind_n can_v there_o be_v a_o great_a argument_n devise_v to_o make_v we_o easy_a and_o willing_a to_o pardon_v offence_n than_o the_o consideration_n of_o that_o absolute_a necessity_n we_o ourselves_o stand_v in_o of_o god_n pardon_n without_o which_o we_o must_v eternal_o perish_v especial_o since_o our_o saviour_n have_v plain_o reveal_v to_o we_o that_o unless_o we_o from_o our_o heart_n forgive_v every_o one_o his_o brother_n their_o trespass_n our_o heavenly_a father_n will_v not_o forgive_v we_o our_o trespass_n consider_v this_o attentive_o and_o thou_o can_v not_o but_o perceive_v the_o great_a unreasonableness_n and_o sinfulness_n of_o revenge_n think_v serious_o how_o much_o thou_o depende_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n for_o thy_o salvation_n and_o then_o thou_o will_v not_o fail_v to_o be_v merciful_a to_o thy_o brethren_n final_o see_v what_o a_o infinite_a multitude_n of_o sin_n must_v be_v forgive_v thou_o by_o god_n if_o thou_o escape_v damnation_n and_o thou_o will_v find_v great_a cause_n to_o pass_v by_o without_o the_o least_o thought_n of_o revenge_n all_o the_o injury_n and_o wrong_n that_o can_v possible_o be_v do_v thou_o by_o thy_o fellow-creature_n and_o many_o more_o useful_a doctrine_n may_v we_o find_v couch_v under_o these_o figurative_a speech_n and_o parable_n which_o our_o saviour_n deliver_v thus_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o tare_n permit_v to_o grow_v among_o the_o wheat_n he_o intimate_v the_o toleration_n of_o dissent_v opinion_n not_o destructive_a of_o piety_n or_o civil_a society_n by_o the_o three_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n grow_v insensible_o of_o the_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n grow_v up_o to_o a_o tree_n and_o of_o a_o little_a leven_n qualify_a the_o whole_a lump_n he_o signify_v the_o increase_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o apostolical_a sermon_n by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a scatter_v his_o seed_n by_o the_o way-side_n some_o on_o stony_a some_o on_o thorny_a and_o some_o on_o good_a ground_n he_o intimate_v the_o several_a capacity_n and_o indisposition_n of_o man_n heart_n the_o carelessness_n of_o some_o the_o frowardness_n and_o levity_n of_o other_o the_o easiness_n and_o softness_n of_o a_o three_o and_o how_o they_o be_v spoil_v with_o worldliness_n and_o care_n and_o how_o many_o way_n there_o be_v to_o miscarry_v and_o that_o but_o one_o sort_n of_o man_n receive_v the_o word_n and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n thus_o plentiful_o do_v the_o saviour_n of_o soul_n provide_v for_o the_o win_n of_o man_n heart_n or_o else_o if_o they_o be_v stubborn_a and_o contumacious_a and_o will_v not_o be_v wrought_v upon_o for_o the_o harden_v of_o they_o by_o such_o please_a discourse_n which_o to_o pursue_v in_o particular_a be_v endless_a for_o without_o a_o parable_n speak_v he_o not_o unto_o they_o the_o second_o week_n the_o eve_n of_o the_o passion_n now_o it_o will_v be_v needful_a for_o thou_o to_o prepare_v thy_o mind_n for_o great_a tribulation_n because_o thou_o draw_v near_o the_o passion_n of_o our_o lord_n who_o holy_a imitation_n be_v the_o joy_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o suffer_v how_o well_o do_v a_o soldier_n fight_v see_v the_o courage_n of_o his_o general_n how_o well_o the_o subject_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o king_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o lose_v his_o life_n for_o he_o the_o disciple_n be_v not_o to_o be_v above_o his_o master_n nor_o the_o servant_n above_o his_o lord_n the_o son_n be_v not_o to_o fare_v better_a than_o his_o father_n nor_o the_o creature_n better_o than_o his_o creator_n embark_v thyself_o in_o the_o vast_a gulf_n of_o thy_o saviour_n passion_n in_o that_o stormy_a sea_n of_o his_o suffering_n thou_o will_v sail_v more_o safe_o than_o in_o the_o haven_n of_o thy_o own_o
