function_n and_o according_o in_o that_o call_n seek_v not_o the_o lord_n but_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o end_n but_o here_o the_o lord_n inquire_v for_o such_o man_n as_o first_o pure_o do_v seek_v and_o undertake_v that_o function_n therein_o to_o honour_n god_n &_o to_o gather_v his_o church_n and_o then_o in_o all_o their_o labour_n and_o ministerial_a duty_n true_o and_o faithful_o and_o ridiculous_a to_o the_o world_n until_o of_o late_a be_v by_o luther_n and_o other_o of_o our_o church_n make_v ashamed_a thereof_o they_o have_v labour_v especial_o the_o jesuit_n to_o become_v so_o many_o and_o yet_o among_o they_o all_o who_o god_n may_v send_v almost_o none_o in_o the_o next_o place_n by_o this_o inquiry_n and_o question_v make_v by_o god_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o the_o lord_n will_v teach_v we_o that_o no_o man_n be_v to_o undertake_v this_o function_n unless_o god_n call_v and_o send_v he_o therefore_o here_o be_v condemn_v the_o profane_a fancy_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n and_o all_o like_o they_o who_o think_v that_o any_o man_n upon_o a_o private_a motion_n may_v step_v forth_o and_o undertake_v the_o duty_n of_o a_o be_v still_o require_v then_o why_o shall_v not_o our_o whole_a due_n be_v pay_v and_o yet_o that_o the_o world_n may_v learn_v of_o we_o contentedness_n as_o well_o by_o our_o practice_n as_o our_o doctrine_n we_o will_v for_o the_o present_a take_v in_o good_a part_n and_o rest_v content_v with_o a_o part_n of_o our_o own_o and_o some_o competent_a portion_n out_o of_o the_o impropriation_n their_o priest_n let_v i_o answer_v once_o for_o you_o who_o often_o answer_n for_o many_o distress_a man_n they_o persecute_v you_o with_o slander_n that_o say_v you_o persecute_v they_o but_o be_v not_o their_o ruin_n and_o if_o they_o who_o can_v hardly_o discharge_v themselves_o from_o be_v priest_n of_o baal_n have_v have_v but_o justice_n and_o that_o also_o temper_v with_o mercy_n it_o show_v how_o good_a regard_n you_o have_v and_o how_o much_o you_o esteem_v all_o good_a and_o faithful_a minister_n which_o be_v god_n interpreter_n in_o a_o word_n if_o all_o our_o minister_n be_v temporal_a magistrate_n and_o though_o their_o crime_n be_v never_o so_o many_o or_o monstrous_a yet_o the_o prince_n or_o civil_a authority_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v to_o take_v notice_n thereof_o conceit_n of_o our_o own_o goodness_n when_o we_o appear_v before_o god._n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o papist_n who_o thus_o magnify_v their_o own_o merit_n do_v seldom_o or_o against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_a â—orâ—mselues_n and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o 〈◊〉_d and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charity_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o heâ—_n abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o a_o minister_n though_o all_o the_o other_o be_v require_v to_o make_v â—him_n complete_a the_o want_n of_o they_o may_v condemn_v he_o before_o man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n which_o present_o check_n he_o before_o god_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n the_o conclusion_n than_o be_v to_o every_o minister_n that_o if_o he_o have_v all_o the_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o good_a quality_n he_o will_v cry_v out_o in_o far_o more_o pitiful_a manner_n then_o here_o the_o prophet_n do_v woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v because_o i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n it_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_a complaineâ—_n of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interperter_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n and_o to_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n call_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a 〈◊〉_d or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v and_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v confess_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v consequent_o that_o he_o must_v know_v they_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o for_o else_o he_o can_v confess_v they_o and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n command_v a_o pastor_n to_o know_v his_o flock_n 27.23_o he_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o flock_n and_o know_v which_o be_v his_o flock_n or_o have_v a_o general_a eye_n over_o it_o but_o he_o must_v have_v a_o particular_a and_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o the_o more_o particular_a the_o better_o and_o if_o the_o minister_n ought_v to_o know_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v first_o that_o it_o be_v best_o for_o a_o minister_n to_o be_v present_a with_o his_o people_n that_o so_o he_o may_v better_o know_v they_o and_o their_o state_n and_o certain_o if_o it_o be_v a_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v to_o god_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o people_n then_o wilful_a and_o careless_a nonresidency_n and_o all_o absence_n without_o just_a and_o conscionable_a cause_n must_v needs_o be_v a_o foul_a and_o fearful_a sin_n for_o how_o can_v isayah_n have_v confess_v he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n but_o that_o he_o dwell_v among_o they_o nay_o say_v the_o prophet_n he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o indeed_o well_o may_v he_o know_v and_o confess_v his_o people_n pollution_n that_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o again_o if_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o confess_v his_o people_n sin_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o know_v they_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o they_o must_v discover_v &_o confess_v they_o unto_o he_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a he_o shall_v perfect_o know_v their_o estate_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o our_o church_n for_o however_o we_o condemn_v auricular_a confession_n as_o a_o very_a policy_n in_o the_o deviser_n and_o as_o a_o rack_n to_o the_o conscience_n of_o poor_a christian_n yet_o we_o not_o only_o allow_v but_o call_v and_o cry_v for_o that_o confession_n whereby_o a_o christian_a voluntary_o at_o all_o time_n may_v resort_v to_o his_o pastor_n and_o open_v his_o estate_n and_o disburden_v his_o conscience_n of_o such_o sin_n as_o disquiet_v he_o and_o crave_v his_o godly_a assistance_n and_o holy_a prayer_n great_a blessing_n and_o comfort_n do_v doubtless_o follow_v they_o that_o use_v this_o godly_a beside_o themselves_o at_o the_o appear_v of_o a_o little_a part_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o transfiguration_n 9.33_o either_o therefore_o must_v it_o follow_v that_o these_o man_n presence_n in_o this_o world_n and_o delight_n to_o think_v of_o god_n to_o speak_v of_o god_n to_o pray_v unto_o he_o to_o meet_v he_o in_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o at_o the_o last_o day_n shall_v thou_o stand_v with_o confidence_n before_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o glory_n hithereto_o of_o the_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o of_o the_o cause_n thereof_o now_o follow_v his_o consolation_n then_o fly_v one_o of_o the_o seraphim_n etc._n etc._n in_o these_o two_o verse_n be_v lay_v down_o the_o second_o general_a point_n namely_o the_o consolation_n be_v against_o they_o they_o will_v confess_v with_o elisha_n there_o be_v more_o with_o we_o then_o against_o us._n the_o story_n of_o all_o age_n do_v affirm_v and_o the_o comfortable_a experience_n of_o these_o day_n of_o we_o do_v verify_v the_o truth_n hereof_o minister_n that_o live_v in_o place_n very_o profane_a or_o very_o popish_a it_o be_v admirable_a to_o see_v how_o many_o danger_n they_o have_v escape_v and_o plot_n they_o have_v avoid_v which_o by_o their_o enemy_n or_o rather_o the_o enemy_n of_o their_o doctrine_n have_v be_v lay_v for_o their_o life_n which_o their_o deliverance_n and_o many_o other_o comfort_n in_o their_o ministry_n whence_o be_v they_o but_o from_o god_n protection_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o angel_n afore_o we_o leave_v this_o point_n â—_z two_o question_n may_v be_v ask_v not_o amiss_o brief_o to_o be_v resolve_v first_o if_o any_o ask_v whence_o come_v it_o that_o angel_n perform_v more_o service_n to_o good_a minister_n then_o to_o other_o man_n i_o answer_v the_o reason_n be_v partly_o from_o god_n partly_o from_o the_o angel_n first_o god_n have_v a_o principal_a care_n of_o they_o above_o other_o man_n because_o they_o work_v his_o work_n above_o all_o other_o calling_n for_o their_o labour_n immediate_o concern_v the_o good_a of_o man_n soul_n whereas_o other_o do_v first_o concern_v the_o body_n and_o consequent_o more_o peculiar_a manner_n then_o any_o other_o call_v and_o for_o that_o their_o service_n be_v so_o like_a that_o their_o name_n be_v common_a one_o to_o the_o other_o angel_n be_v call_v minister_n and_o minister_n angel_n as_o though_o they_o be_v almost_o all_o one_o second_o because_o the_o minister_n duty_n be_v to_o convert_v and_o save_v soul_n be_v a_o work_n which_o next_o to_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n and_o do_v his_o will_n the_o angel_n do_v take_v most_o delight_n in_o above_o any_o other_o for_o if_o they_o be_v send_v out_o for_o the_o good_a of_o they_o which_o shall_v be_v save_v 1.14_o how_o much_o more_o willing_o for_o their_o good_a by_o who_o they_o be_v save_v 15.10_o which_o shall_v be_v save_v &_o if_o the_o angel_n rejoice_v at_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n sure_o they_o much_o love_v he_o &_o desire_v to_o do_v he_o good_a by_o who_o the_o sinner_n be_v convert_v and_o in_o these_o respect_n that_o angel_n and_o minister_n have_v the_o will_v answer_v minister_n must_v therefore_o worship_v they_o and_o keep_v their_o fast_n and_o holiday_n and_o say_v their_o service_n and_o pray_v unto_o they_o as_o to_o their_o keeper_n and_o mediator_n but_o alas_o can_v the_o king_n messenger_n or_o officer_n be_v honour_v unless_o he_o be_v set_v upon_o the_o king_n throne_n will_v nothing_o serve_v he_o but_o the_o crown_n and_o sceptre_n so_o can_v angel_n be_v honour_v unless_o they_o be_v make_v god_n or_o saviour_n or_o mediator_n i_o answer_v therefore_o we_o dare_v not_o go_v so_o far_o lest_o we_o remember_v the_o servant_n so_o much_o that_o we_o forget_v the_o master_n but_o rather_o we_o answer_v thus_o see_v angel_n be_v thus_o serviceable_a to_o god_n minister_n it_o shall_v first_o of_o all_o teach_v all_o man_n to_o honour_n that_o call_v with_o all_o due_a reverence_n for_o they_o can_v but_o please_v the_o angel_n in_o honour_v good_a minister_n who_o they_o esteem_v their_o fellow_n second_o it_o shall_v teach_v all_o minister_n not_o to_o content_v themselves_o with_o the_o name_n and_o title_n but_o to_o labour_v to_o be_v good_a and_o faithful_a for_o so_o do_v they_o be_v fellow_n to_o the_o angel_n and_o it_o be_v a_o disgrace_n to_o the_o angel_n when_o those_o that_o be_v their_o fellow_n be_v unfaithful_a and_o it_o shall_v further_o teach_v they_o to_o adorn_v their_o call_v with_o a_o holy_a life_n for_o as_o sin_n be_v that_o that_o grieve_v the_o angel_n and_o drive_v they_o away_o so_o it_o be_v grace_n and_o holiness_n which_o make_v they_o delight_n in_o the_o fellowship_n of_o man_n and_o it_o may_v also_o encourage_v any_o man_n to_o take_v pain_n in_o that_o holy_a call_v wherein_o he_o be_v sure_a to_o have_v god_n angel_n in_o a_o special_a manner_n to_o attend_v he_o to_o assist_v he_o to_o protect_v he_o and_o to_o be_v a_o witness_n of_o his_o faithfulness_n and_o who_o will_v not_o work_v cheerful_o in_o that_o labour_n wherein_o he_o have_v the_o angel_n to_o be_v in_o a_o sort_n fellow-worker_n with_o he_o to_o do_v these_o three_o duty_n be_v to_o honour_v good_a angel_n and_o that_o minister_n that_o conscionable_o perform_v they_o the_o angel_n will_v take_v themselves_o sufficient_o honour_v of_o that_o man_n and_o if_o beside_o this_o honour_n we_o will_v rejoice_v god_n angel_n and_o minister_v matter_n of_o joy_n unto_o they_o then_o in_o the_o four_o place_n let_v all_o minister_n propound_v to_o themselves_o above_o all_o thing_n the_o conversion_n of_o soul_n rather_o than_o their_o own_o praise_n or_o live_v or_o please_v of_o man_n and_o so_o endeavour_n it_o both_o in_o teach_v and_o all_o their_o other_o course_n that_o the_o angel_n may_v see_v it_o and_o be_v witness_n of_o it_o for_o if_o they_o rejoice_v at_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n as_o christ_n say_v they_o do_v than_o those_o man_n make_v they_o oft_a rejoice_n which_o do_v most_o serious_o aim_v at_o the_o conversion_n of_o sinner_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v both_o the_o service_n of_o angel_n to_o god_n minister_n and_o the_o duty_n they_o be_v to_o perform_v to_o they_o in_o that_o regard_n the_o due_a consideration_n of_o this_o point_n may_v raise_v the_o world_n to_o a_o better_a conceit_n of_o this_o call_v and_o persuade_v father_n to_o dedicate_v their_o son_n to_o it_o and_o stir_v up_o young_a student_n to_o consecrate_v themselves_o thereto_o &_o turn_v their_o study_n to_o that_o end_n for_o no_o man_n in_o no_o calling_n have_v so_o special_a attendance_n and_o assistance_n of_o god_n angel_n as_o godly_a minister_n have_v at_o least_o if_o it_o work_v not_o this_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o it_o may_v yield_v comfort_n and_o contentment_n to_o all_o faith_n minister_n in_o their_o painful_a call_n but_o let_v we_o see_v how_o the_o angel_n perform_v his_o service_n to_o the_o prophet_n not_o unwilling_o not_o linger_o but_o speedy_o so_o say_v the_o text._n he_o fly_v which_o be_v not_o so_o to_o be_v understand_v circumstance_n as_o though_o the_o angel_n have_v wing_n for_o they_o have_v no_o corporal_a nor_o sensible_a body_n but_o spiritual_a and_o insensible_a substance_n the_o action_n whereof_o be_v perform_v with_o such_o nimbleness_n and_o agility_n as_o can_v fall_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o outward_a sense_n but_o the_o phrase_n be_v use_v for_o our_o capacity_n to_o show_v how_o ready_o and_o speedy_o the_o angel_n go_v about_o to_o minister_v comfort_n to_o the_o prophet_n for_o as_o nothing_o move_v so_o quick_o to_o our_o sense_n as_o do_v the_o creature_n that_o fly_v and_o as_o we_o say_v that_o man_n do_v fly_v about_o his_o business_n which_o do_v it_o quick_o and_o diligent_o so_o here_o the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v down_o the_o willingness_n and_o quickness_n of_o the_o angel_n to_o comfort_v this_o holy_a prophet_n
