have_v and_o use_v but_o still_o a_o man_n must_v not_o stay_v here_o a_o man_n will_v use_v his_o bucket_n but_o he_o expect_v water_n from_o the_o well_o these_o mean_n be_v the_o bucket_n but_o all_o our_o comfort_n and_o all_o our_o life_n and_o grace_n be_v only_o in_o christ_n if_o you_o say_v your_o bucket_n shall_v help_v you_o you_o may_v starve_v for_o thirst_n if_o you_o let_v it_o not_o down_o into_o the_o well_o for_o water_n so_o though_o you_o brag_v of_o your_o pray_n and_o hear_v and_o fast_v and_o of_o your_o alm_n and_o build_v of_o hospital_n and_o your_o good_a deed_n if_o none_o of_o these_o bring_v you_o to_o a_o christ_n and_o if_o these_o be_v not_o mean_n to_o settle_v you_o on_o a_o christ_n you_o shall_v die_v for_o thirst_n though_o your_o work_n be_v as_o the_o work_n of_o a_o angel_n but_o why_o do_v the_o soul_n seek_v for_o succour_n from_o itself_o and_o will_v not_o go_v out_o to_o christ_n reason_n 1_o the_o first_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o sinner_n be_v conceive_v not_o yet_o to_o be_v in_o christ_n out_o of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n dare_v not_o be_v so_o proud_a as_o to_o think_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v any_o favour_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o the_o sinner_n be_v now_o overwhelm_v with_o the_o body_n of_o death_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o his_o abomination_n gall_v of_o he_o and_o be_v starve_v by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o still_o his_o sin_n be_v before_o his_o eye_n and_o to_o this_o day_n have_v get_v no_o assurance_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o and_o god_n be_v angry_a against_o he_o his_o heart_n shrink_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o eternal_a wrath_n of_o the_o almighty_a against_o he_o and_o he_o say_v because_o i_o have_v despise_v justice_n and_o abuse_a mercy_n how_o dare_v i_o appear_v condemn_v and_o must_v i_o needs_o go_v and_o confess_v my_o sin_n what_o shall_v i_o a_o rebel_n go_v before_o a_o prince_n to_o come_v before_o he_o it_o be_v the_o next_o way_n to_o be_v execute_v and_o have_v some_o plague_n throw_v upon_o i_o as_o a_o malefactor_n will_v devise_v some_o shift_n that_o he_o may_v not_o come_v before_o the_o judge_n so_o while_o the_o soul_n may_v have_v some_o have_v salvation_n out_o of_o his_o own_o reach_n and_o to_o put_v the_o staff_n out_o of_o his_o own_o hand_n and_o to_o hang_v his_o salvation_n upon_o god_n good_a pleasure_n who_o love_n and_o mercy_n as_o yet_o he_o be_v never_o persuade_v of_o oh_o this_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o the_o heart_n be_v marvellous_a rich_a and_o careful_a in_o this_o and_o it_o be_v with_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o kind_n as_o rabshecah_n say_v to_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n if_o you_o say_v to_o i_o 36.7_o esa_n 36.7_o be_v not_o that_o he_o who_o altar_n you_o have_v break_v down_o etc._n etc._n thus_o he_o labour_v to_o pluck_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o this_o people_n from_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n the_o soul_n in_o this_o kind_n sometime_o shake_v and_o shrink_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o vileness_n and_o say_v as_o this_o wretch_n do_v have_v you_o offend_v he_o and_o do_v you_o look_v for_o any_o succour_n from_o he_o this_o argument_n be_v very_o peevish_a and_o keen_a and_o yet_o false_a for_o they_o be_v the_o altar_n of_o idol_n but_o the_o soul_n say_v against_o itself_o and_o marvellous_a true_o when_o a_o minister_n will_v persuade_v a_o man_n to_o go_v to_o heaven_n for_o mercy_n the_o soul_n begin_v to_o reason_n thus_o with_o itself_o and_o say_v shall_v i_o repair_v to_o god_n oh_o that_o be_v my_o trouble_n be_v not_o he_o that_o great_a god_n who_o justice_n and_o mercy_n and_o patience_n i_o have_v abuse_v and_o be_v not_o he_o the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n that_o have_v be_v incense_v against_o i_o oh_o with_o what_o face_n can_v i_o appear_v before_o he_o and_o with_o what_o heart_n can_v i_o look_v for_o any_o mercy_n from_o he_o i_o have_v wrong_v his_o justice_n and_o can_v his_o justice_n pardon_v i_o i_o have_v abuse_v his_o mercy_n and_o can_v his_o mercy_n pity_v i_o what_o such_o a_o wretch_n as_o i_o be_o if_o i_o have_v never_o enjoy_v the_o mean_n of_o mercy_n i_o may_v have_v have_v some_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n dare_v not_o seek_v out_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v use_v any_o shift_n to_o help_v itself_o without_o go_v to_o god_n reason_n 2_o the_o second_o reason_n why_o the_o soul_n dare_v not_o seek_v out_o to_o christ_n for_o succour_n it_o be_v this_o because_o the_o mystery_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n through_o christ_n be_v not_o yet_o make_v know_v to_o the_o soul_n the_o soul_n be_v yet_o consider_v as_o bare_o break_v and_o weary_v with_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n let_v i_o say_v as_o the_o apostle_n do_v the_o new_a and_o live_a way_n holiness_n and_o be_v sanctify_v by_o another_o spirit_n these_o be_v not_o yet_o reveal_v these_o do_v exceed_v our_o corrupt_a nature_n adam_n after_o his_o fall_n can_v not_o have_v find_v out_o this_o way_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o reveal_v it_o have_v not_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o come_v from_o the_o bosom_n of_o his_o father_n make_v this_o bosom_n truth_n know_v we_o have_v never_o be_v acquaint_v with_o it_o therefore_o the_o soul_n can_v come_v to_o christ_n upon_o these_o term_n as_o our_o saviour_n say_v 3.13_o joh._n 3.13_o no_o man_n have_v ascend_v up_o to_o heaven_n but_o he_o that_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n now_o this_o poor_a distress_a sinner_n as_o yet_o guilty_a of_o his_o sin_n and_o yet_o not_o see_v a_o way_n reveal_v and_o not_o able_a to_o ascend_v into_o this_o heavenly_a mystery_n because_o it_o see_v no_o better_a way_n it_o will_v betake_v itself_o to_o these_o duty_n that_o may_v be_v do_v by_o his_o own_o strength_n without_o seek_v to_o christ_n reason_n 3_o because_o for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v able_a and_o to_o have_v a_o power_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n to_o perform_v duty_n of_o himself_o and_o to_o please_v god_n of_o himself_o it_o be_v once_o possible_a in_o the_o time_n of_o man_n innocency_n adam_n have_v it_o and_o he_o may_v have_v procure_v god_n favour_n and_o have_v keep_v the_o law_n and_o have_v be_v bless_v by_o the_o law_n because_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v he_o a_o stock_n in_o himself_o and_o make_v he_o able_a to_o do_v it_o of_o himself_o and_o we_o retain_v thus_o much_o of_o adam_n nature_n we_o be_v loath_a
confess_v it_o second_o from_o the_o example_n of_o other_o three_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o evil_a that_o lie_v upon_o he_o make_v he_o see_v a_o utter_a inability_n to_o receive_v any_o good_a from_o that_o which_o he_o do_v first_o from_o his_o own_o experience_n though_o he_o think_v to_o take_v up_o a_o new_a course_n and_o to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o think_v that_o without_o all_o question_n these_o will_v save_v he_o yet_o he_o find_v now_o that_o these_o will_v not_o do_v the_o deed_n he_o have_v no_o save_v good_a in_o these_o and_o that_o appear_v by_o these_o three_o particular_n first_o he_o see_v that_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n still_o remain_v and_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n be_v unsatisfied_a still_o pursue_v he_o though_o he_o pray_v and_o hear_v and_o perform_v many_o duty_n as_o the_o lord_n tell_v the_o people_n when_o they_o be_v shark_v for_o their_o own_o comfort_n and_o they_o think_v to_o give_v god_n content_a by_o their_o new_a course_n yet_o the_o lord_n tell_v they_o though_o thou_o wash_v thou_o with_o nitre_n 2.22_o jer._n 2.22_o and_o take_v thou_o much_o soap_n and_o though_o thou_o use_v all_o mean_n of_o reformation_n yet_o thy_o sin_n be_v seal_v up_o and_o thy_o iniquity_n be_v mark_v before_o i_o it_o be_v with_o a_o poor_a sinner_n as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v of_o himself_o whither_o shall_v i_o go_v from_o thy_o spirit_n 9_o psal_n 139.7_o 8_o 9_o or_o whither_o shall_v i_o fly_v from_o thy_o presence_n if_o i_o ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n thou_o be_v there_o if_o i_o lie_v down_o in_o hell_n thou_o be_v there_o if_o i_o take_v the_o wing_n of_o the_o morning_n and_o dwell_v in_o the_o uttermost_a part_n of_o the_o sea_n even_o thither_o shall_v thy_o right_a hand_n lead_v i_o etc._n etc._n so_o let_v himself_o and_o every_o sacrament_n that_o he_o receive_v increase_v not_o his_o comfort_n but_o his_o horror_n and_o he_o think_v thus_o with_o himself_o good_a lord_n i_o have_v take_v my_o bane_n this_o day_n for_o i_o come_v unprepared_o and_o the_o lord_n know_v what_o a_o unfaithful_a and_o unbelieving_a heart_n i_o have_v second_o as_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n can_v be_v remoove_v by_o all_o his_o duty_n so_o his_o conscience_n can_v be_v quiet_v by_o all_o that_o he_o do_v if_o his_o heart_n be_v thorough_o pierce_v by_o the_o sword_n of_o the_o law_n still_o conscience_n call_v upon_o he_o and_o quarrel_n with_o he_o and_z takes_z exception_n against_o he_o in_o the_o best_a of_o his_o duty_n so_o far_o they_o be_v from_o yield_v any_o satisfaction_n to_o god_n or_o from_o bring_v any_o peace_n to_o his_o conscience_n if_o he_o rest_v upon_o the_o bare_a performance_n of_o they_o i_o speak_v of_o a_o break_a heart_a sinner_n for_o the_o conscience_n be_v now_o eagle_n eye_v it_o be_v full_a of_o film_n and_o scale_n before_o but_o now_o it_o be_v open_a and_o eagle_n eye_v and_o can_v spy_v all_o his_o weakness_n and_o pick_v matter_n of_o disquiet_n even_o in_o the_o best_a of_o all_o his_o duty_n that_o be_v do_v the_o soul_n think_v they_o very_o good_a payment_n yet_o now_o the_o heart_n be_v touch_v and_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o tell_v he_o of_o his_o barrenness_n and_o deadness_n and_o rove_a thought_n when_o he_o do_v pray_v and_o how_o insufficient_a he_o be_v to_o pray_v and_o therefore_o he_o dare_v not_o pray_v with_o his_o family_n and_o conscience_n say_v to_o he_o you_o have_v former_o contemn_v prayer_n and_o now_o you_o can_v pray_v and_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v into_o the_o congregation_n there_o conscience_n note_v he_o and_o when_o he_o go_v home_o conscience_n say_v thus_o unto_o he_o how_o dead_a be_v you_o and_o how_o unreverent_o do_v you_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n and_o how_o unwilling_a be_v your_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o word_n thus_o conscience_n become_v god_n sergeant_n and_o say_v do_v thou_o think_v that_o these_o prayer_n will_v save_v thou_o nay_o they_o be_v rather_o a_o mean_n to_o condemn_v thou_o so_o heartless_a so_o cold_a and_o so_o dead_a heart_a thou_o be_v in_o they_o and_o be_v this_o hear_n sufficient_a to_o save_v thou_o nay_o will_v not_o the_o lord_n curse_v thou_o for_o thy_o weak_a performance_n of_o these_o duty_n now_o the_o distress_a soul_n come_v to_o a_o stand_n with_o itself_o and_o he_o see_v so_o much_o weakness_n in_o his_o duty_n that_o he_o almost_o leave_v off_o all_o say_v i_o have_v as_o good_a not_o go_v to_o the_o word_n at_o all_o for_o i_o profit_v not_o by_o it_o and_o i_o have_v as_o good_a not_o pray_v at_o all_o as_o pray_v thus_o deadly_a and_o untoward_o thus_o the_o lord_n drive_v the_o soul_n out_o of_o himself_o and_o when_o conscience_n thus_o pick_v quarrel_n with_o he_o and_o say_v will_v prayer_n and_o hear_v and_o these_o duty_n so_o mean_o perform_v save_v you_o nay_o may_v not_o god_n just_o confound_v you_o for_o they_o it_o be_v admirable_a mercy_n that_o god_n do_v not_o confound_v you_o in_o hear_v and_o strike_v you_o dead_a in_o pray_v and_o then_o conscience_n call_v he_o in_o question_n for_o his_o old_a sin_n and_o say_v if_o god_n may_v condemn_v thou_o for_o these_o duty_n and_o for_o these_o prayer_n then_o what_o may_v god_n do_v for_o thy_o old_a drunkenness_n and_o rail_v at_o good_a man_n 3.20_o 1_o john_n 3.20_o and_o good_a mean_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v if_o our_o conscience_n condemn_v we_o god_n be_v great_a than_o our_o conscience_n and_o know_v all_o thing_n so_o the_o soul_n say_v i_o know_v thus_o much_o by_o myself_o but_o god_n know_v more_o three_o as_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n can_v be_v remove_v nor_o conscience_n quiet_v mere_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n if_o the_o conscience_n be_v true_o enlighten_v so_o in_o the_o last_o place_n the_o sin_n that_o have_v take_v possession_n in_o the_o heart_n can_v be_v subdue_v by_o the_o power_n of_o any_o performance_n that_o he_o do_v i_o speak_v still_o of_o one_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o ingraft_v into_o christ_n rebel_n against_o his_o sin_n he_o will_v but_o kill_v it_o and_o subdue_v it_o that_o he_o can_v and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n let_v in_o upon_o the_o soul_n a_o great_a many_o infirmity_n and_o a_o swarm_n of_o weakness_n that_o be_v present_a with_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o he_o see_v a_o utter_a inability_n in_o himself_o to_o help_v himself_o against_o they_o the_o one_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n befall_v he_o if_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o mean_a part_n and_o small_a gift_n he_o see_v himself_o so_o weak_a and_o so_o unprofitable_a under_o all_o mean_n that_o his_o soul_n almost_o sink_v down_o in_o desperate_a discouragement_n and_o when_o he_o get_v nothing_o by_o all_o the_o duty_n that_o he_o do_v he_o fall_v out_o with_o himself_o and_o pine_v almost_o to_o desperation_n and_o if_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o great_a part_n and_o gift_n and_o learning_n and_o have_v wisdom_n to_o conceive_v of_o thing_n the_o lord_n suffer_v many_o corruption_n to_o fall_v upon_o he_o and_o when_o he_o come_v to_o humble_v himself_o before_o god_n he_o say_v i_o be_o able_a to_o discourse_v of_o this_o and_o that_o and_o i_o can_v hear_v and_o pray_v but_o oh_o this_o heart_n of_o i_o a_o man_n have_v as_o good_a move_v a_o mountain_n as_o move_v my_o heart_n this_o hard_a heart_n will_v not_o stir_v nor_o be_v break_v under_o all_o and_o help_v against_o these_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v now_o the_o soul_n upon_o these_o term_n be_v even_o content_a to_o leave_v off_o all_o and_o it_o befall_v the_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n as_o it_o do_v hagar_n 16._o gen._n 21.15_o 16._o when_o her_o bottle_n of_o water_n be_v spend_v she_o cast_v the_o child_n under_o a_o tree_n and_o sit_v a_o far_o off_o because_o she_o will_v not_o see_v the_o child_n die_v so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n when_o the_o bottle_n of_o these_o saint_n and_o scanty_a duty_n be_v do_v the_o soul_n sit_v down_o in_o discouragement_n and_o say_v good_a lord_n it_o will_v never_o be_v my_o

righteousness_n and_o duty_n and_o think_v to_o find_v acceptance_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o and_o pardon_v from_o the_o lord_n because_o of_o these_o so_o that_o now_o the_o soul_n be_v nothing_o and_o the_o lord_n say_v unto_o he_o thou_o shall_v go_v in_o rag_n all_o thy_o day_n that_o christ_n may_v be_v thy_o righteousness_n thou_o shall_v be_v a_o fool_n that_o christ_n may_v be_v thy_o wisdom_n and_o thou_o shall_v be_v weak_a that_o christ_n may_v be_v all_o thy_o strength_n and_o i_o will_v make_v the_o submit_v to_o that_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n nay_o the_o lord_n say_v further_o if_o you_o think_v to_o find_v acceptance_n and_o to_o purchase_v mercy_n by_o what_o you_o can_v do_v then_o come_v your_o way_n and_o bring_v all_o those_o prayer_n and_o duty_n and_o see_v if_o they_o can_v all_o answer_v my_o exact_a law_n of_o righteousness_n and_o satisfy_v my_o justice_n thus_o the_o lord_n be_v fain_o to_o empty_a a_o man_n of_o himself_o this_o so_o forth_o you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o god_n will_v bring_v you_o to_o heaven_n before_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o it_o and_o that_o a_o humble_a heart_n will_v drop_v into_o your_o mouth_n the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v always_o have_v it_o before_o they_o receive_v christ_n and_o thou_o must_v have_v it_o too_o if_o ever_o thou_o will_v have_v he_o therefore_o make_v it_o a_o chief_a before_o thou_o have_v this_o gracious_a disposition_n of_o spirit_n you_o see_v the_o price_n the_o worth_n and_o excellency_n of_o this_o bless_a grace_n do_v not_o now_o let_v this_o grace_n lie_v lay_v cast_v it_o not_o into_o a_o bye_n corner_n but_o in_o all_o your_o desire_n covet_v this_o and_o in_o all_o your_o hunt_n up_o and_o down_o after_o commodity_n prize_v this_o more_o than_o in_o the_o heart_n still_o stick_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o understanding_n even_o of_o a_o gracious_a godly_a man_n and_o from_o hence_o namely_o out_o of_o this_o mistake_n of_o the_o mind_n follow_v all_o that_o carnal_a reason_n that_o howsoever_o the_o soul_n be_v satisfy_v yet_o it_o will_v not_o sit_v down_o but_o still_o it_o stick_v in_o this_o carnal_a reason_n and_o the_o sinner_n can_v conceive_v the_o truth_n nor_o fathom_v the_o compass_n of_o it_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o own_o weakness_n therefore_o it_o be_v long_o before_o he_o will_v be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v truth_n and_o that_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o yield_v to_o it_o when_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o truth_n be_v so_o plain_a and_o evident_a that_o he_o can_v resist_v the_o clearness_n of_o it_o yet_o because_o he_o can_v conceive_v of_o it_o he_o think_v that_o he_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o yield_v thereunto_o object_n but_o some_o will_v say_v shall_v a_o man_n yield_v to_o that_o which_o he_o can_v conceive_v answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v when_o the_o mind_n be_v so_o far_o enlighten_v that_o he_o can_v gainsay_v any_o thing_n in_o reason_n though_o he_o can_v compass_v the_o depth_n and_o bottom_n of_o the_o truth_n yet_o he_o shall_v yield_v to_o it_o and_o rather_o go_v with_o reason_n then_o follow_v his_o own_o imagination_n when_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n for_o it_o just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o nicodemus_n when_o christ_n speak_v of_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n 3.9_o joh._n 3.9_o he_o say_v can_v a_o man_n be_v bear_v
