the_o rule_n of_o sobriety_n will_v be_v hardly_o bring_v to_o hear_v of_o fast_v and_o beside_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o the_o unjust_a man_n alm_n will_v avail_v he_o little_a and_o as_o little_a the_o drunkard_n or_o glutton_n fast_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o a_o while_n before_o we_o proceed_v to_o take_v in_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o duty_n of_o sobriety_n s._n i_o acknowledge_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o proposal_n sobriety_n what_o then_o do_v you_o mean_v by_o sobriety_n c._n temperance_n in_o eat_v and_o drink_v which_o whatsoever_o may_v serve_v of_o god_n public_o and_o as_o mean_n to_o preserve_v the_o true_a religion_n from_o all_o corruption_n in_o doctrine_n and_o to_o these_o argument_n may_v be_v add_v one_o more_o of_o common_a observation_n even_o when_o the_o minister_n or_o who_o ever_o be_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o rest_n pray_v though_o in_o a_o form_n of_o his_o own_o present_a extemporary_a effusion_n yet_o at_o that_o time_n all_o other_o present_a be_v limit_v to_o his_o conception_n and_o pray_v in_o as_o stint_v a_o form_n as_o if_o what_o the_o minister_n pray_v be_v read_v out_o of_o a_o book_n or_o dictate_v by_o his_o memory_n that_o it_o be_v also_o lawful_a to_o use_v a_o set_v as_o that_o signify_v a_o prescribe_a form_n of_o prayer_n be_v apparent_a also_o 1._o by_o christ_n prescribe_v which_o he_o will_v not_o sure_o have_v do_v if_o it_o have_v not_o be_v lawful_a to_o have_v use_v it_o be_v prescribe_v and_o so_o also_o 2._o by_o the_o other_o example_n mention_v which_o be_v most_o of_o they_o prescription_n 3._o by_o the_o non-objection_n against_o the_o use_n of_o they_o for_o sure_o if_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o use_v they_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o prescribe_v they_o at_o some_o time_n and_o for_o some_o use_n for_o that_o a_o thing_n in_o itself_o acknowledge_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v lawful_a shall_v by_o be_v command_v by_o lawful_a charity_n be_v much_o preserve_v s._n well_o then_o suppose_v these_o set-forme_n to_o be_v lawful_a in_o themselves_o and_o lawful_a to_o be_v prescribe_v another_o question_n you_o teach_v i_o frequent_a fast_v and_o withal_o by_o that_o mean_n much_o advance_v his_o spiritual_a end_n have_v great_a vacancy_n for_o holy_a employment_n great_a store_n for_o work_n of_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o sure_a in_o this_o case_n the_o command_n of_o pray_v and_o mercifullnesse_n will_v be_v also_o tacit_a command_v of_o fast_v so_o that_o though_o there_o be_v not_o any_o particular_a explicit_a precept_n oblige_v every_o man_n whatsoever_o under_o pain_n of_o sin_n to_o fast_o simple_o thus_o or_o thus_o often_o yet_o tacit_a command_v there_o may_v be_v to_o they_o that_o be_v by_o any_o of_o these_o circumstance_n fit_v for_o it_o and_o even_o to_o those_o that_o for_o the_o present_n be_v not_o it_o will_v yet_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v consider_v and_o count_v of_o as_o a_o duty_n that_o they_o may_v be_v concern_v in_o and_o that_o if_o in_o no_o other_o respect_n yet_o in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v christian_n who_o aspire_v to_o a_o angelical_a life_n and_o invisible_a joy_n and_o shall_v therefore_o deny_v and_o by_o that_o wean_v themselves_o of_o those_o sensual_a corporeal_a pleasure_n of_o eat_v or_o drink_v so_o far_o as_o to_o preservation_n of_o life_n and_o health_n and_o to_o their_o duty_n to_o themselves_o may_v be_v agreeable_a s._n how_o often_o then_o shall_v a_o christian_n fast_o c._n by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v you_o will_v as_o commendable_a if_o he_o have_v not_o boast_v of_o it_o 2._o that_o every_o christian_a ought_v to_o have_v his_o solemn_a set_a day_n for_o the_o perform_v that_o great_a and_o weighty_a duty_n of_o humiliation_n in_o call_v himself_o to_o account_v for_o all_o his_o way_n and_o confess_v his_o sin_n to_o god_n more_o particular_o and_o those_o day_n shall_v not_o be_v too_o slow_a in_o that_o use_v not_o some_o such_o constant_a course_n which_o yet_o on_o special_a occasion_n may_v be_v alter_v will_v be_v in_o great_a danger_n to_o be_v find_v and_o censure_v a_o neglecter_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n 3._o that_o over_o and_o above_o this_o common_a duty_n of_o all_o man_n some_o other_o want_v there_o be_v or_o may_v be_v in_o this_o or_o that_o man_n to_o the_o repair_n of_o which_o fast_v may_v be_v very_o instrumental_a as_o have_v be_v show_v and_o so_o proportionable_o be_v to_o be_v more_o frequent_o use_v by_o they_o who_o have_v this_o need_n of_o it_o of_o which_o their_o own_o conscience_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v leave_v the_o judge_n all_o this_o have_v be_v say_v of_o private_a fast_n because_o that_o be_v peculiar_a to_o this_o place_n for_o public_a fast_v the_o direction_n must_v be_v have_v from_o the_o law_n where_o we_o live_v which_o so_o far_o at_o least_o oblige_v every_o one_o that_o he_o offend_v not_o against_o they_o either_o contemptuous_o or_o with_o scandal_n s._n i_o shall_v now_o desire_v god_n direction_n and_o grace_n to_o incline_v i_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o my_o duty_n so_o almes-giving_a c._n the_o caution_n be_v itself_o in_o plain_a intelligible_a word_n when_o you_o fast_o be_v not_o as_o the_o hypocrite_n of_o a_o sad_a countenance_n for_o they_o disfigure_v or_o discolour_v their_o face_n that_o they_o may_v appear_v to_o man_n to_o fast_v but_o rather_o then_o so_o do_v thou_o when_o thou_o fast_o anoint_v thy_o head_n and_o wash_v thy_o face_n for_o thy_o outward_a guise_n appear_v in_o thy_o ordinary_a countenance_n and_o habit_n for_o the_o jew_n be_v wont_a to_o anoint_v themselves_o daily_o unless_o in_o time_n of_o mourning_n that_o thou_o appear_v not_o to_o man_n to_o man_n to_o fast_o that_o no_o man_n out_o of_o thy_o family_n be_v witness_n of_o thy_o private_a fast_n but_o to_o thy_o father_n which_o be_v in_o secret_a that_o use_v they_o so_o as_o may_v most_o improve_v our_o future_a account_n i._n e._n by_o liberal_a dispense_n of_o they_o to_o raise_v a_o bank_n which_o may_v enrich_v we_o for_o ever_o in_o another_o hand_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n lay_v a_o double_a burden_n on_o that_o part_n of_o our_o life_n which_o be_v present_a to_o provide_v for_o itself_o and_o that_o other_o also_o will_v when_o it_o come_v be_v able_a to_o take_v care_n and_o make_v provision_n for_o itself_o the_o manna_n that_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n to_o the_o israelite_n fall_v every_o day_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o lay_v up_o in_o store_n and_o if_o it_o be_v do_v it_o putrify_a of_o reserve_v any_o part_n of_o the_o present_a portion_n for_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v they_o be_v sure_a to_o be_v as_o plentiful_o provide_v as_o for_o the_o present_a they_o be_v and_o so_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n that_o have_v bring_v we_o in_o a_o present_a store_n will_v be_v able_a and_o ready_a to_o do_v the_o like_a for_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o life_n when_o it_o come_v and_o therefore_o all_o that_o we_o shall_v acquire_v by_o this_o solicitude_n before_o hand_n be_v only_o to_o accumulate_v trouble_v and_o disquiet_v upon_o ourselves_o beside_o that_o due_a labour_n and_o industry_n which_o we_o owe_v to_o god_n as_o subservient_fw-fr to_o his_o providence_n you_o by_o unmerciful_a censure_n c._n those_o which_o have_v no_o mixture_n of_o mercy_n in_o they_o ja._n 2._o 13._o the_o precept_n of_o forgive_a those_o who_o have_v wrong_v i_o be_v by_o christ_n improve_v in_o some_o kind_n even_o to_o those_o offence_n which_o be_v do_v against_o god_n so_o far_o as_o that_o i_o be_v oblige_v by_o it_o to_o look_v upon_o they_o in_o other_o in_o otherwise_o they_o will_v never_o be_v accept_v by_o he_o s._n to_o what_o purpose_n be_v all_o that_o which_o in_o this_o matter_n be_v add_v to_o this_o prohibition_n in_o the_o rest_n of_o this_o to_o the_o excuse_v or_o justify_v of_o piracy_n rapine_n oppression_n fraud_n violence_n any_o kind_n of_o injustice_n etc._n etc._n to_o the_o spread_a of_o lie_n slander_n defamation_n etc._n etc._n to_o covetousness_n unsatisfiednesse_n uncontentednesse_n in_o our_o present_a condition_n desire_v of_o change_n cast_v the_o cross_n on_o other_o man_n shoulder_n that_o we_o may_v free_v our_o own_o from_o it_o to_o deal_v with_o other_o as_o we_o will_v not_o be_v well_o please_v to_o be_v deal_v with_o ourselves_o or_o in_o a_o word_n if_o they_o tend_v to_o the_o discouragingor_n discountenance_v any_o christian_a virtue_n set_v down_o in_o this_o or_o any_o other_o sermon_n of_o christ_n or_o by_o his_o apostle_n or_o to_o the_o grant_v any_o dispensation_n or_o liberty_n from_o that_o christian_a strictness_n in_o these_o duty_n or_o in_o those_o other_o of_o repentance_n self-denial_n meekness_n mercifullnesse_n peaceablenesse_n etc._n etc._n by_o these_o mark_n and_o character_n you_o may_v know_v this_o to_o be_v a_o false_a teacher_n yet_o not_o so_o far_o this_o as_o that_o whosoever_o be_v guilty_a himself_o of_o any_o of_o these_o sin_n shall_v be_v if_o he_o be_v a_o teacher_n a_o false_a one_o for_o it_o be_v possible_a his_o doctrine_n and_o action_n may_v be_v contrary_a but_o that_o if_o these_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o natural_a effect_n
