and_o so_o seek_v it_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n that_o they_o do_v take_v to_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n and_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o their_o soul_n alas_o all_o this_o while_n they_o be_v labour_v and_o toil_a but_o can_v do_v it_o for_o while_o man_n seek_v righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o toil_a labour_n that_o will_v not_o give_v rest_n the_o first_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n first_o the_o law_n give_v no_o strength_n at_o all_o to_o enable_v i_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o therefore_o the_o child_n of_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v under_o bondage_n as_o pharaoh_n taskmaster_n command_v so_o much_o brick_n to_o be_v make_v but_o will_v afford_v they_o no_o straw_n no_o mean_n to_o do_v it_o so_o some_o set_v forth_o the_o bondage_n and_o servitude_n of_o the_o law_n command_v such_o thing_n as_o it_o give_v no_o strength_n at_o all_o to_o perform_v quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v this_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v god_n so_o hard_o to_o his_o creature_n as_o to_o command_v that_o which_o he_o give_v no_o ability_n to_o perform_v answ_n we_o must_v know_v that_o god_n do_v once_o give_v strength_n to_o perform_v duty_n but_o certain_o now_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v they_o there_o be_v no_o strength_n enable_v we_o to_o perform_v duty_n until_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n do_v come_v into_o the_o soul_n we_o may_v perform_v the_o outward_a part_n of_o they_o but_o not_o perform_v duty_n in_o such_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v suitable_a to_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a unto_o our_o soul_n and_o though_o the_o soul_n do_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o ease_v to_o itself_o yet_o it_o will_v not_o come_v that_o way_n the_o second_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n second_o the_o law_n require_v perfect_a obedience_n in_o every_o thing_n and_o denounce_v a_o curse_n against_o he_o that_o do_v not_o continue_v in_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o now_o when_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o can_v perform_v duty_n as_o they_o ought_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n but_o they_o see_v the_o law_n to_o condemn_v they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o perfect_a manner_n and_o yet_o they_o think_v they_o must_v go_v on_o and_o do_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v i_o but_o still_o conscience_n have_v matter_n to_o accuse_v they_o of_o you_o have_v not_o do_v enough_o you_o still_o come_v short_a and_o though_o you_o do_v some_o duty_n you_o neglect_v other_o duty_n so_o that_o conscience_n have_v they_o at_o advantage_n every_o day_n and_o they_o be_v continual_o under_o the_o bondage_n of_o a_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v conscience_n that_o they_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n they_o perform_v duty_n but_o question_n with_o themselves_o how_o can_v i_o know_v that_o the_o infinite_a holy_a god_n will_v accept_v of_o what_o i_o do_v and_o although_o they_o may_v get_v quiet_a for_o a_o little_a while_n yet_o conscience_n come_v upon_o they_o again_o and_o disquiet_v they_o and_o cast_v fear_n and_o doubt_n â—to_z their_o soul_n insomuch_o that_o many_o poor_a creature_n have_v go_v seven_o or_o perhaps_o twice_o seven_o year_n under_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n and_o never_o have_v any_o rest_n or_o peace_n and_o yet_o still_o have_v go_v on_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o way_n but_o withal_o full_a of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n lest_o all_o shall_v not_o be_v well_o with_o they_o at_o last_o the_o three_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o beside_o while_o the_o soul_n go_v on_o to_o seek_v quiet_a and_o rest_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o duty_n that_o be_v perform_v and_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n so_o that_o the_o very_a work_n that_o they_o do_v and_o duty_n they_o perform_v be_v grievous_a and_o tedious_a unto_o they_o ay_o but_o now_o say_v christ_n o_o come_v to_o i_o such_o as_o these_o be_v be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o have_v have_v your_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o have_v desire_v o_o that_o there_o may_v be_v peace_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n what_o course_n have_v you_o take_v to_o get_v it_o have_v you_o not_o seek_v to_o bring_v it_o about_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o have_v think_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o way_n indeed_o it_o be_v better_a to_o go_v on_o that_o way_n than_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n but_o to_o think_v to_o have_v rest_n and_o peace_n that_o way_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o evil_a in_o it_o than_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o if_o man_n shall_v think_v to_o quiet_v themselves_o that_o way_n and_o thereby_o put_v off_o the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o faith_n they_o may_v come_v to_o be_v harden_v before_o they_o be_v aware_a but_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o be_v seek_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o your_o soul_n in_o such_o a_o way_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n say_v christ_n know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n for_o you_o to_o have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a you_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n and_o perform_v duty_n o_o but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n you_o must_v come_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o to_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o to_o get_v true_a ease_n and_o rest_n to_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v hard_o in_o itself_o till_o god_n make_v know_v the_o can_v do_v it_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o it_o he_o come_v in_o and_o in_o a_o little_a time_n by_o his_o skill_n and_o art_n can_v do_v that_o with_o ease_n that_o the_o other_o man_n be_v toil_a and_o labour_v about_o a_o long_a while_n and_o yet_o can_v not_o do_v it_o as_o you_o know_v in_o all_o trade_n that_o have_v a_o mystery_n in_o they_o you_o that_o be_v navigator_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o that_o art_n if_o any_o unskilful_a man_n shall_v come_v and_o think_v to_o do_v some_o of_o your_o work_n by_o his_o main_a strength_n he_o may_v labour_v and_o toil_n even_o his_o heart_n out_o and_o not_o do_v that_o work_n that_o you_o can_v do_v easy_o in_o a_o little_a time_n so_o many_o poor_a soul_n be_v labour_v and_o toil_a that_o these_o trouble_a soul_n of_o they_o may_v be_v but_o quiet_a they_o be_v labour_v and_o they_o will_v perform_v duty_n and_o fast_o and_o pray_v so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o day_n and_o so_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o his_o performance_n may_v be_v rather_o a_o burden_n than_o that_o which_o shall_v do_v he_o good_a in_o the_o conclusion_n and_o bring_v he_o to_o life_n and_o except_o he_o do_v come_v to_o know_v furhe_a than_o yet_o he_o do_v to_o know_v the_o evangelical_a performance_n of_o duty_n he_o can_v have_v true_a rest_n in_o his_o soul_n now_o this_o as_o the_o other_o be_v the_o law_n require_v yet_o i_o may_v do_v some_o outward_a performance_n now_o for_o i_o to_o go_v about_o such_o a_o work_n to_o endeavour_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v all_o the_o work_n that_o the_o law_n require_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a part_n but_o the_o will_v work_v and_o to_o be_v put_v upon_o to_o struggle_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o do_v that_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a all_o motion_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v from_o a_o external_a principle_n be_v violent_a and_o so_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a so_o this_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n yet_o in_o this_o way_n of_o legal_a performance_n never_o gain_v this_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a unto_o not_o to_o be_v do_v at_o this_o time_n but_o such_o thing_n as_o conscience_n tell_v they_o be_v good_a they_o be_v hurry_v on_o to_o do_v they_o present_o though_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o weakness_n the_o do_v of_o they_o now_o do_v hinder_v they_o from_o do_v other_o thing_n of_o more_o consequence_n as_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n many_o that_o be_v weak_a yet_o under_o the_o command_n of_o conscience_n and_o be_v in_o a_o legal_a way_n sudden_o there_o come_v such_o a_o thing_n into_o their_o
and_o in_o their_o duty_n but_o mere_o according_a to_o the_o stir_v of_o conscience_n if_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v &_o stir_v then_o they_o be_v careful_a to_o perform_v duty_n but_o if_o conscience_n do_v not_o stir_v they_o they_o be_v careless_a again_o &_o therefore_o those_o that_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o this_o manner_n you_o shall_v not_o observe_v a_o evenness_n in_o their_o way_n but_o sometime_o they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o life_n omit_v any_o duty_n but_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v loose_v again_o for_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o beat_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o do_v not_o work_v according_a to_o the_o new_a nature_n for_o that_o which_o work_v according_a to_o a_o new_a nature_n work_v in_o a_o even_a way_n wherein_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o and_o this_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n of_o trial_n whether_o that_o that_o you_o do_v be_v from_o the_o change_n of_o nature_n or_o from_o other_o principle_n if_o there_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o you_o be_v not_o very_o forward_o in_o something_o and_o backward_a in_o another_o that_o be_v a_o sign_n it_o be_v do_v from_o a_o new_a nature_n but_o if_o you_o make_v conscience_n of_o some_o thing_n and_o at_o other_o time_n in_o other_o thing_n take_v more_o liberty_n this_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o what_o you_o do_v be_v but_o legal_o do_v and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a as_o it_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o a_o man_n to_o go_v upon_o uneven_a ground_n one_o leg_n up_o and_o another_o down_o so_o for_o a_o man_n to_o perform_v duty_n up_o and_o down_o forward_z and_o backward_o here_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o burden_n in_o that_o way_n whereas_o those_o that_o come_v to_o perform_v duty_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o their_o way_n be_v make_v even_o for_o they_o not_o but_o that_o god_n people_n may_v sometime_o be_v better_a than_o they_o be_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o there_o be_v general_o a_o evenness_n and_o proportion_n between_o their_o action_n the_o six_o misery_n six_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o if_o so_o be_v that_o by_o these_o duty_n their_o conscience_n come_v to_o be_v quiet_v than_o they_o be_v keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v no_o people_n more_o keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n than_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o have_v quiet_a of_o conscience_n that_o way_n yeâ—_n not_o only_o keep_v from_o christ_n but_o further_o they_o set_v up_o their_o duty_n in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v their_o very_a justification_n what_o be_v it_o that_o many_o people_n will_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o righteousness_n and_o hope_n of_o heaven_n but_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n require_v now_o here_o be_v a_o mighty_a mistake_n though_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v god_n law_n yet_o for_o we_o to_o come_v and_o make_v this_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n and_o set_v it_o up_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v our_o interest_n for_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v to_o put_v jesus_n christ_n out_o of_o his_o office_n and_o make_v our_o own_o duty_n to_o be_v our_o savior_n this_o now_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a and_o yet_o how_o many_o people_n be_v there_o that_o do_v thus_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v the_o large_a in_o this_o point_n because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o argument_n that_o we_o do_v every_o day_n meet_v withal_o and_o also_o because_o i_o will_v have_v many_o who_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v enlighten_v and_o much_o trouble_v to_o know_v where_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o duty_n and_o abstain_v from_o those_o sin_n that_o other_o live_v in_o and_o perform_v duty_n that_o other_o neglect_v but_o they_o go_v on_o very_o heavy_o and_o sad_o for_o many_o year_n together_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o know_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n from_o whence_o their_o trouble_n come_v now_o by_o that_o that_o i_o have_v open_v to_o you_o in_o this_o point_n you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whence_o all_o your_o trouble_n come_v whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o you_o have_v go_v on_o in_o that_o sadness_n and_o heaviness_n as_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v do_v your_o duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n you_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o way_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v ease_v of_o this_o burden_n when_o i_o come_v to_o that_o there_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o some_o measure_n the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o ease_n than_o before_o not_o more_o easy_a to_o the_o flesh_n but_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o whosoever_o you_o be_v that_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n of_o legal_a but_o i_o have_v go_v on_o just_a in_o this_o legal_a way_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o this_o point_n if_o this_o be_v your_o condition_n so_o far_o be_v comfort_n to_o you_o and_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n call_v you_o it_o be_v true_a your_o condition_n be_v for_o the_o present_a sad_a yet_o there_o be_v help_v hope_v and_o remedy_n in_o christ_n come_v to_o he_o and_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v you_o rest_v and_o teach_v you_o to_o honour_n god_n that_o shall_v be_v more_o comfort_n to_o your_o soul_n than_o this_o way_n you_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o safe_a way_n and_o a_o speedy_a way_n for_o comfort_n and_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n too_o therefore_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o call_v to_o you_o to_o make_v less_o conscience_n of_o your_o duty_n than_o you_o do_v no_o but_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n and_o a_o more_o safe_a and_o speedy_a way_n than_o that_o now_o you_o be_v in_o christ_n call_v you_o quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v do_v christ_n call_v to_o these_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n as_o if_o he_o do_v approve_v of_o their_o condition_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v burden_v by_o these_o legal_a performance_n answ_n there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o burden_n here_o that_o it_o be_v true_a aught_o to_o be_v and_o christ_n approve_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n etc._n etc._n and_o christ_n call_v these_o as_o approve_v of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a though_o not_o true_o good_a but_o there_o be_v other_o burden_n that_o be_v upon_o sinner_n that_o christ_n call_v to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o not_o as_o they_o be_v approve_v of_o by_o christ_n but_o christ_n pity_v they_o and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o those_o that_o be_v under_o those_o burden_n as_o be_v under_o a_o great_a misery_n as_o now_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n when_o christ_n shall_v see_v a_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n to_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a estate_n upon_o he_o to_o labour_n and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o think_v by_o this_o to_o make_v up_o his_o righteousness_n with_o god_n and_o eternal_a life_n christ_n see_v that_o all_o his_o labour_n will_v come_v to_o nothing_o if_o he_o go_v on_o in_o this_o way_n he_o will_v loose_v all_o his_o duty_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o conscience_n he_o make_v of_o holy_a duty_n he_o will_v perish_v at_o last_o except_o he_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o justify_v sinner_n before_o his_o tribunal_n fear_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o duty_n he_o perform_v except_o he_o come_v to_o understand_v this_o he_o will_v perish_v now_o in_o pity_n and_o tender_a compassion_n to_o such_o a_o soul_n that_o have_v do_v so_o much_o and_o go_v so_o far_o the_o lord_n christ_n do_v
but_o now_o he_o trade_v for_o himself_o and_o every_o day_n he_o get_v and_o get_v and_o get_v for_o himself_o that_o be_v another_o way_n how_o christ_n give_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o regard_n of_o performance_n of_o duty_n that_o they_o be_v not_o burdensome_a unto_o the_o soul_n as_o heretofore_o they_o have_v be_v three_o another_o way_n of_o deliver_v believer_n in_o the_o those_o that_o be_v draw_v to_o holy_a duty_n they_o will_v not_o abide_v as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o son_n abide_v in_o the_o house_n but_o a_o servant_n abide_v not_o always_o in_o the_o house_n so_o such_o as_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o will_v be_v go_v they_o will_v not_o abide_v but_o now_o one_o that_o be_v come_v into_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o sonlike_a disposition_n he_o continue_v as_o we_o say_v in_o philosophy_n no_o violent_a thing_n or_o motion_n be_v perpetual_a and_o indeed_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n a_o hundred_o to_o one_o but_o they_o will_v prove_v apostate_n at_o last_o but_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n will_v continue_v and_o hold_v out_o unto_o the_o end_n iii_o the_o main_a use_n perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n the_o truth_n be_v they_o perform_v little_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v not_o acceptable_a but_o when_o a_o soul_n come_v to_o find_v rest_n in_o duty_n it_o and_o more_o and_o yet_o this_o will_v not_o bring_v true_a rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o your_o soul_n you_o will_v never_o have_v peace_n and_o rest_n through_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n you_o must_v have_v it_o by_o i_o there_o be_v many_o who_o conscience_n god_n have_v begin_v to_o enlighten_v to_o see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o evil_n in_o sin_n that_o sin_n will_v bring_v death_n that_o it_o do_v endanger_v their_o soul_n of_o damnation_n eternal_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o and_o that_o they_o may_v have_v peace_n with_o god_n be_v the_o thing_n their_o soul_n do_v much_o desire_n o_o that_o they_o may_v have_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n o_o that_o they_o may_v have_v their_o conscience_n quiet_v god_n do_v awaken_v the_o conscience_n of_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n who_o yet_o have_v no_o save_a grace_n and_o they_o spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n in_o labour_v and_o take_v much_o pain_n to_o get_v their_o conscience_n quiet_a there_o be_v many_o that_o have_v be_v divers_a year_n labour_v and_o take_v pain_n to_o get_v their_o conscience_n to_o be_v quiet_a and_o can_v but_o their_o conscience_n ever_o and_o anon_o will_v be_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n &_o trouble_v of_o they_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v such_o people_n as_o dare_v not_o commit_v any_o know_a sin_n dare_v not_o neglect_v any_o know_a duty_n be_v constant_a in_o prayer_n in_o secret_a attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o whensoever_o they_o hear_v of_o a_o duty_n that_o they_o shall_v perform_v they_o labour_v to_o set_v upon_o it_o withal_o their_o might_n but_o alas_o they_o feel_v little_a sweetness_n and_o comfort_n in_o
mind_n i_o must_v spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o prayer_n say_v conscience_n you_o can_v do_v too_o much_o for_o god_n and_o why_o shall_v you_o not_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n for_o god_n now_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o be_v hurry_v on_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n though_o by_o the_o do_n of_o it_o at_o that_o time_n they_o shall_v hinder_v themselves_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o and_o i_o have_v know_v by_o experience_n many_o that_o have_v be_v greivous_o burden_v this_o way_n what_o they_o present_o apprehend_v to_o have_v any_o good_a in_o it_o that_o they_o think_v they_o must_v do_v although_o they_o by_o that_o be_v hinder_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o whereas_o now_o if_o we_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o liberty_n we_o have_v in_o christ_n we_o will_v be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o this_o way_n though_o i_o be_o weak_a now_o yet_o i_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o my_o heart_n be_v upright_o and_o though_o i_o do_v forbear_v the_o do_v of_o such_o a_o thing_n that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v good_a yet_o my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o it_o be_v not_o through_o a_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o what_o may_v glorify_v god_n nor_o because_o i_o will_v neglect_v any_o duty_n that_o god_n will_v have_v i_o do_v but_o because_o i_o know_v through_o my_o weakness_n the_o do_v of_o this_o at_o this_o time_n will_v hinder_v i_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n otherways_o therefore_o i_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v accept_v of_o i_o in_o christ_n and_o pardon_v my_o infirmity_n thus_o the_o soul_n can_v do_v that_o be_v in_o christ_n but_o those_o that_o be_v legal_a conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o duty_n without_o regard_v their_o strength_n and_o so_o put_v they_o upon_o strong_a duty_n when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o weak_a capacity_n when_o they_o be_v weak_a conscience_n will_v put_v they_o upon_o the_o strong_a duty_n now_o this_o be_v for_o the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o liberty_n in_o jesus_n christ_n for_o they_o have_v this_o liberty_n in_o christ_n that_o christ_n accept_v of_o they_o according_a to_o what_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o this_o acceptance_n that_o let_v they_o go_v on_o to_o do_v what_o they_o be_v command_v in_o uprightness_n and_o though_o they_o can_v do_v such_o duty_n because_o god_n know_v i_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o i_o shall_v hold_v out_o or_o no_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o when_o i_o have_v do_v all_o labour_v and_o toil_v what_o i_o can_v that_o i_o shall_v prove_v a_o apostate_n a_o backslider_n at_o last_o thus_o they_o have_v many_o such_o jealousy_n of_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v full_a of_o jealousy_n of_o god_n so_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o themselves_o well_o if_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n come_v i_o shall_v fall_v off_o and_o turn_v and_o manifest_a that_o i_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o always_o unsound_a now_o these_o very_a thought_n make_v their_o life_n and_o duty_n burdensome_a unto_o they_o whenas_o one_o that_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o freedom_n of_o the_o gospel_n one_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n he_o can_v go_v on_o well_o though_o i_o be_o but_o weak_a yet_o i_o have_v a_o everlasting_a principle_n that_o will_v hold_v for_o i_o do_v it_o by_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v everlasting_a though_o i_o be_v weak_a yet_o i_o be_o fasten_v to_o that_o that_o be_v everlasting_a i_o be_o carry_v on_o by_o such_o a_o principle_n that_o will_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n and_o oh_o what_o a_o rest_n be_v this_o here_o be_v rest_n indeed_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o know_v that_o though_o i_o be_o weak_a yet_o i_o shall_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n whenas_o one_o that_o be_v legal_a he_o be_v ever_o jealous_a and_o he_o think_v what_o do_v i_o this_o for_o i_o shall_v fall_v off_o at_o last_o and_o so_o go_v on_o heavy_o and_o be_v trouble_v in_o his_o thought_n and_o this_o make_v both_o his_o duty_n and_o his_o life_n burdensome_a still_o i_o say_v christ_n call_v upon_o all_o these_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o still_o there_o be_v a_o rest_n in_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o shall_v speak_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n at_o once_o but_o now_o i_o will_v only_o find_v out_o those_o that_o christ_n call_v you_o that_o find_v it_o thus_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v just_a as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o word_n i_o find_v it_o in_o my_o heart_n i_o only_o speak_v to_o you_o to_o raise_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o attend_v to_o what_o be_v further_o to_o be_v say_v afterward_o only_o remember_v that_o of_o the_o poor_a blind_a man_n when_o christ_n call_v he_o they_o comfort_v he_o with_o this_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n he_o call_v thou_o so_o i_o say_v to_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o this_o burden_n and_o long_a to_o know_v the_o true_a liberty_n of_o spirit_n that_o the_o saint_n have_v in_o christ_n christ_n call_v to_o you_o and_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o 12._o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 12._o those_o that_o be_v thus_o legal_a their_o conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o performance_n of_o duty_n but_o their_o humiliation_n and_o trouble_n for_o not_o do_v of_o what_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v do_v hinder_v they_o from_o do_v what_o god_n require_v and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n that_o when_o i_o have_v not_o do_v my_o duty_n and_o be_o trouble_v for_o not_o do_v my_o duty_n that_o do_v hinder_v i_o from_o do_v my_o duty_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v evangelical_n humiliation_n it_o make_v they_o more_o fit_a to_o do_v duty_n the_o other_o it_o make_v they_o more_o unfit_a their_o heart_n be_v more_o sullen_a fretful_a and_o untoward_a and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n that_o not_o only_o they_o fail_v in_o other_o duty_n but_o when_o they_o be_v trouble_v for_o this_o they_o fail_v moâ—e_n first_o they_o fail_v of_o their_o duty_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v a_o great_a while_n and_o then_o they_o complain_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v and_o that_o they_o can_v be_v humble_v for_o their_o sin_n after_o this_o complaint_n they_o begin_v to_o be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o they_o be_v trouble_v after_o such_o away_o as_o they_o grow_v sullen_a and_o discontent_a vex_v and_o fret_v of_o themselves_o and_o by_o this_o they_o come_v to_o be_v hinder_v as_o much_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o duty_n as_o by_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o heart_n before_o some_o be_v hinder_v by_o their_o hardness_n of_o heart_n from_o perform_v of_o duty_n and_o other_o by_o their_o humility_n now_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a burden_n you_o may_v some_o of_o you_o find_v it_o in_o your_o own_o experience_n that_o the_o trouble_n of_o your_o heart_n have_v rather_o hinder_v you_o then_o further_v you_o in_o duty_n as_o in_o exodus_fw-la when_o moses_n come_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n the_o text_n say_v they_o do_v not_o harken_v unto_o he_o because_o of_o the_o anguish_n of_o their_o heart_n so_o there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o have_v such_o legal_a trouble_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o that_o for_o their_o sin_n as_o it_o do_v hinder_v they_o from_o harken_v unto_o the_o bless_a sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o make_v they_o more_o unfit_a to_o harken_v to_o the_o invitation_n of_o christ_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o yea_o such_o kind_n of_o trouble_n they_o have_v for_o their_o sin_n that_o make_v they_o as_o it_o be_v reason_n away_o the_o bless_a comfort_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o their_o soul_n chap._n x._o the_o sad_a condition_n of_o such_o as_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n set_v forth_o in_o six_o particular_n 1._o that_o which_o shall_v be_v account_v their_o happiness_n be_v sad_a condition_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o be_v under_o this_o legal_a performance_n that_o be_v in_o this_o condition_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a and_o insupportable_a to_o many_o and_o this_o text_n will_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o text_n of_o wonderful_a mercy_n if_o we_o do_v set_v out_o before_o you_o the_o sadness_n and_o grievousness_n of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n the_o first_o misery_n first_o be_v not_o this_o a_o sad_a thing_n that_o that_o thing_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o chief_n joy_n of_o one_o heart_n in_o happiness_n life_n and_o glory_n he_o account_v as_o his_o misery_n the_o second_o misery_n second_o there_o be_v this_o evil_a also_o in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o this_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o cause_v hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o if_o god_n go_v no_o further_o with_o they_o then_o this_o that_o they_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n this_o will_v occasion_v many_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o way_n and_o they_o may_v find_v that_o they_o have_v so_o many_o time_n when_o their_o heart_n be_v pinch_v with_o this_o burden_n they_o have_v many_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o hard_a thought_n of_o his_o law_n and_o hard_a thought_n of_o his_o way_n this_o be_v very_o grievous_a when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o find_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o be_v grievous_a and_o so_o to_o murmur_v and_o repine_v against_o god_n as_o many_o do_v that_o be_v in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n they_o go_v on_o in_o duty_n but_o because_o they_o get_v no_o peace_n nor_o comfort_n nor_o mastery_n over_o their_o corruption_n they_o begin_v to_o repine_v and_o murmur_v at_o god_n say_v they_o i_o have_v do_v thus_o and_o thus_o and_o i_o have_v perform_v duty_n and_o nothing_o come_v of_o they_o and_o there_o upon_o they_o begin_v to_o leave_v and_o hate_v they_o the_o three_o misery_n three_o there_o be_v this_o evil_a also_o in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o it_o cause_v a_o sink_a discouragement_n their_o heart_n do_v sink_v in_o exceed_a discouragement_n after_o a_o while_o they_o go_v on_o in_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v nothing_o come_v of_o it_o and_o they_o sink_v under_o it_o in_o discouragement_n they_o think_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o go_v any_o further_a and_o they_o be_v desirous_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o whole_o and_o think_v it_o be_v the_o only_a way_n for_o their_o ease_n and_o rest_n hence_o follow_v that_o therefore_o there_o be_v a_o way_n open_a to_o temptation_n for_o the_o devil_n to_o come_v and_o tempt_v they_o either_o to_o looseness_n or_o to_o despair_v it_o be_v many_o time_n the_o end_n of_o such_o poor_a creature_n except_o god_n be_v please_v to_o come_v in_o and_o reveal_v christ_n unto_o they_o one_o of_o these_o two_o be_v the_o conclusion_n either_o they_o cast_v off_o the_o duty_n that_o before_o they_o make_v conscience_n of_o and_o so_o grow_v to_o be_v loose_a and_o profane_a or_o otherwise_o if_o conscience_n pursue_v they_o more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o despair_v and_o sometime_o upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n come_v into_o a_o rave_a and_o rage_a distemper_n as_o by_o experience_n we_o find_v that_o many_o after_o they_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n under_o a_o trouble_a conscience_n and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o have_v grow_v very_o profane_a there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o neglect_v duty_n in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n but_o they_o come_v afterward_o to_o think_v that_o this_o be_v but_o legal_a and_o now_o they_o cast_v they_o off_o and_o give_v themselves_o to_o looseness_n and_o then_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o plead_v for_o themselves_o but_o this_o that_o they_o be_v under_o legal_a performance_n and_o they_o leave_v they_o off_o and_o thus_o they_o go_v this_o way_n to_o rest_n but_o oh_o woeful_a this_o be_v to_o go_v to_o the_o devil_n for_o rest_n if_o you_o have_v come_v to_o christ_n you_o may_v have_v have_v rest_n but_o these_o give_v up_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o devil_n rest_v and_o grow_v to_o looseness_n and_o be_v notorious_o scandalous_a in_o in_o their_o life_n i_o suppose_v if_o you_o will_v observe_v it_o you_o need_v not_o go_v far_o to_o find_v example_n in_o this_o kind_n but_o other_o that_o can_v get_v the_o mastery_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o grow_v to_o despair_v when_o they_o come_v upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n their_o heart_n be_v overwhelm_v with_o despair_n and_o so_o they_o die_v now_o oh_o what_o pity_v it_o be_v to_o loose_v such_o soul_n as_o have_v go_v thus_o far_o in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n as_o thus_o first_o they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o god_n people_n do_v for_o the_o outward_a act_n they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n the_o saint_n do_v second_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o what_o they_o do_v make_v conscience_n of_o their_o very_a thought_n and_o of_o their_o secret_a way_n nay_o three_o they_o know_v they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n they_o have_v their_o heart_n so_o wrought_v upon_o that_o they_o set_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n always_o nay_o four_o they_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n the_o fear_n of_o eternity_n upon_o their_o heart_n continual_o and_o yet_o perish_v at_o last_o and_o all_o for_o the_o want_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v true_a these_o man_n say_v right_a that_o if_o their_o be_v any_o such_o who_o do_v put_v they_o upon_o duty_n and_o not_o open_a to_o they_o the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o christ_n if_o they_o do_v so_o they_o be_v right_o blame_v for_o put_v man_n upon_o duty_n god_n forbid_v that_o any_o that_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o preach_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n unto_o people_n shall_v rest_v here_o in_o mere_o put_v of_o man_n upon_o to_o those_o that_o they_o converse_v withal_o but_o they_o that_o perform_v duty_n mere_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o go_v on_o so_o pensive_o sad_o and_o dull_o that_o there_o be_v no_o beauty_n at_o all_o in_o their_o conversation_n and_o they_o make_v other_o afraid_a of_o those_o way_n that_o be_v so_o tedious_a and_o irksome_a to_o they_o the_o five_o misery_n five_o there_o be_v this_o soul_n but_o through_o a_o mediator_n in_o christ_n the_o soul_n must_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o mercy_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n the_o mediator_n thou_o must_v first_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o mediator_n before_o thou_o can_v have_v any_o rest_n even_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n itself_o you_o must_v know_v and_o if_o you_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o must_v know_v this_o that_o though_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_a current_n of_o mercy_n yet_o all_o the_o current_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v by_o man_n sin_n so_o as_o it_o can_v only_o be_v open_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v know_v god_n in_o christ_n and_o you_o must_v know_v how_o you_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n before_o you_o can_v rest_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n this_o be_v that_o which_o do_v undo_v many_o soul_n those_o that_o be_v of_o the_o better_a sort_n they_o think_v to_o rely_v upon_o god_n mercy_n think_v to_o rest_v in_o that_o and_o that_o be_v a_o sure_a rest_n to_o their_o soul_n but_o they_o little_o understand_v how_o all_o the_o current_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v stop_v and_o there_o be_v no_o come_n to_o it_o but_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o man_n other_o they_o will_v say_v they_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n they_o do_v many_o good_a action_n they_o serve_v god_n and_o they_o rest_v in_o this_o they_o do_v not_o commit_v the_o gross_a sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o they_o do_v perform_v duty_n they_o pray_v in_o their_o family_n and_o in_o their_o closert_n &_o this_o be_v that_o they_o rest_v in_o but_o the_o rest_n of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n must_v have_v a_o better_a foundation_n than_o this_o than_o all_o the_o duty_n than_o all_o the_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n than_o all_o that_o god_n himself_o work_v in_o they_o it_o must_v be_v somewhat_o without_o they_o that_o must_v be_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o nothing_o wrought_v in_o we_o no_o not_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o we_o can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n it_o must_v be_v the_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o a_o mediator_n though_o it_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o by_o faith_n can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n yet_o nothing_o in_o we_o so_o that_o you_o may_v mistake_v and_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o formal_a manner_n but_o suppose_v you_o perform_v they_o in_o a_o gracious_a manner_n yet_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v in_o they_o you_o must_v go_v high_a than_o all_o the_o best_a duty_n that_o ever_o you_o perform_v wo_n to_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n if_o they_o have_v no_o other_o rest_n but_o what_o their_o duty_n bring_v they_o you_o must_v look_v high_a than_o whatever_o you_o be_v or_o can_v be_v enable_v to_o do_v for_o your_o rest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v there_o that_o can_v be_v high_o than_o what_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v by_o god_n there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n by_o which_o you_o must_v come_v there_o be_v a_o insufficiency_n in_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n to_o give_v rest_n and_o yet_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n make_v all_o their_o rest_n in_o these_o thing_n much_o may_v be_v speak_v concern_v the_o danger_n of_o this_o and_o much_o of_o the_o sign_n when_o our_o soul_n have_v true_a rest_n in_o christ_n but_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o that_o in_o the_o other_o point_n in_o handle_v the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n i_o will_v therefore_o pass_v over_o this_o about_o the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o rest_n in_o all_o other_o thing_n only_o with_o this_o one_o thing_n know_v this_o that_o that_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o iron_n be_v with_o the_o loadstone_n can_v never_o be_v quiet_a either_o in_o creature_n comfort_n or_o in_o hope_n of_o mercy_n or_o in_o any_o duty_n or_o performance_n it_o can_v never_o be_v quiet_a till_o it_o get_v union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n just_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o needle_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o loadstone_n shake_v it_o which_o way_n you_o will_v it_o will_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o north_n and_o when_o it_o get_v north_n than_o it_o stand_v there_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v the_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v but_o touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n it_o shake_v be_v full_o of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o offer_v it_o this_o creature_n comfort_n and_o the_o other_o creature_n comfort_n it_o will_v not_o do_v it_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o at_o rest_n but_o now_o when_o there_o be_v the_o manifestation_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o soul_n let_v they_o come_v to_o a_o sermon_n where_o some_o bless_a promise_n to_o the_o gospel_n be_v open_v to_o they_o and_o jesus_n christ_n this_o hinder_v they_o from_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n because_o they_o find_v quiet_a some_o where_o else_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v trouble_v but_o their_o trouble_n and_o shake_n in_o the_o world_n be_v like_o the_o trouble_n of_o a_o ship_n that_o be_v in_o the_o haven_n at_o shore_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n a_o ship_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n though_o the_o wave_n toss_v it_o up_o and_o down_o yet_o it_o be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o at_o anchor_n so_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n for_o all_o the_o world_n between_o all_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o trouble_n of_o ungodly_a man_n now_o when_o you_o have_v a_o ship_n at_o sea_n and_o have_v no_o anchor_n and_o the_o storm_n drive_v it_o any_o way_n when_o there_o come_v a_o mighty_a tempest_n that_o they_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o if_o they_o find_v any_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o terror_n that_o come_v by_o the_o law_n certain_o than_o they_o need_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o all_o the_o terror_n that_o possible_o can_v come_v from_o any_o creature_n from_o any_o man_n if_o thy_o faith_n can_v deliver_v deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o give_v rest_n unto_o thy_o soul_n from_o that_o than_o thou_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o all_o terror_n from_o wicked_a man_n do_v but_o set_v that_o grace_n of_o thy_o a_o work_n set_v it_o in_o exercise_n upon_o such_o promise_n as_o have_v give_v thou_o rest_n from_o the_o law_n and_o this_o will_v free_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n true_o if_o believer_n do_v understand_v the_o reality_n of_o this_o point_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v threat_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o as_o thou_o have_v make_v use_n of_o thy_o faith_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n to_o get_v rest_n from_o those_o terror_n in_o the_o like_a manner_n put_v forth_o thy_o faith_n when_o thou_o hear_v the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o deliver_v thy_o soul_n from_o they_o let_v there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o rumour_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o thou_o may_v say_v my_o soul_n return_v unto_o thy_o rest_n the_o seven_o lesson_n seven_o another_o lesson_n that_o believer_n be_v to_o learn_v from_o their_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n which_o be_v of_o marvellous_a use_n to_o they_o in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v this_o that_o certain_o it_o be_v the_o most_o unbecoming_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o see_v a_o believer_n to_o be_v christian_n that_o have_v receive_v so_o much_o rest_n from_o christ_n yet_o shall_v be_v a_o troublesome_a man_n or_o woman_n to_o his_o brother_n or_o sister_n christ_n do_v therefore_o give_v miserable_a remember_v what_o rigour_n christ_n have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o and_o remember_v to_o be_v quiet_a spirit_v to_o thy_o brother_n hence_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o word_n to_o my_o text_n learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n i_o will_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o you_o may_v be_v of_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a disposition_n towards_o your_o brethren_n but_o of_o that_o when_o we_o come_v to_o those_o word_n that_o follow_v we_o shall_v then_o speak_v of_o the_o weakness_n and_o quietness_n of_o spirit_n that_o shall_v be_v in_o christian_n now_o these_o thing_n be_v necessary_o the_o consequence_n that_o do_v follow_v upon_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o law_n many_o other_o thing_n may_v be_v raise_v but_o because_o they_o be_v but_o consequence_n of_o what_o have_v be_v deliver_v i_o resolve_v not_o to_o be_v large_a upon_o they_o chap._n 33._o of_o the_o rest_n from_o legal_a performance_n and_o the_o several_a way_n how_o this_o rest_n come_v from_o christ_n viz._n duty_n be_v delightful_a to_o the_o soul_n because_o christ_n render_v god_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o a_o gracious_a way_n 2._o they_o be_v not_o perform_v as_o satisfactory_a but_o as_o testimony_n of_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n 3_o christ_n himself_o offer_v up_o the_o duty_n to_o god_n 4._o they_o be_v perform_v from_o the_o law_n in_o the_o heart_n 5._o they_o have_v the_o promise_v join_v with_o they_o now_o to_o make_v some_o entrance_n into_o the_o next_o thing_n which_o have_v great_a affinity_n to_o the_o other_o and_o that_o be_v the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n that_o there_o be_v in_o many_o in_o regard_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o you_o know_v i_o open_v at_o large_a the_o great_a burden_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o many_o people_n who_o have_v convince_v conscience_n and_o there_o conscience_n pull_v and_o hale_v they_o to_o duty_n and_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o perform_v duty_n but_o when_o they_o do_v their_o duty_n their_o very_a duty_n be_v a_o burden_n to_o they_o for_o they_o do_v they_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n there_o be_v many_o i_o know_v that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o subject_n but_o that_o there_o be_v divers_a that_o know_v what_o i_o mean_v though_o other_o know_v not_o to_o be_v under_o so_o much_o power_n of_o conscience_n as_o not_o to_o dare_v to_o omit_v a_o duty_n though_o the_o duty_n be_v burdensome_a to_o they_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v not_o under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n but_o though_o conscience_n require_v they_o to_o do_v such_o a_o duty_n they_o dare_v omit_v the_o duty_n and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v at_o it_o but_o but_o there_o be_v other_o who_o have_v not_o feel_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o set_v their_o soul_n at_o liberty_n they_o be_v under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o do_v what_o conscience_n require_v and_o yet_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o duty_n that_o they_o have_v perform_v have_v be_v girevous_a burden_n they_o they_o have_v go_v under_o the_o command_n of_o their_o conscience_n as_o under_o a_o grievous_a burden_n now_o to_o these_o christ_n speak_v come_z ro_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n in_o the_o believe_a in_o christ_n in_o the_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o christ_n there_o be_v deliverance_n from_o this_o burden_n and_o many_o poor_a soul_n that_o for_o many_o year_n have_v go_v on_o under_o this_o burden_n who_o the_o lord_n have_v open_v to_o they_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n their_o heart_n
have_v be_v at_o liberty_n so_o as_o they_o have_v be_v as_o conscientious_a in_o perform_v of_o duty_n as_o before_o but_o now_o their_o duty_n be_v make_v the_o joy_n and_o delight_n of_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v go_v to_o they_o with_o rejoice_v and_o make_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o be_v their_o inheritance_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o their_o duty_n be_v as_o sweet_a to_o they_o as_o the_o honey_n and_o the_o honey_n comb_n now_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n that_o we_o be_v upon_o that_o in_o christ_n there_o be_v rest_n from_o this_o burden_n christ_n give_v ability_n unto_o believer_n those_o that_o be_v his_o member_n to_o perform_v duty_n with_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n and_o indeed_o evangelical_a duty_n be_v duty_n perform_v with_o freedom_n that_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o legal_a performance_n and_o evangelical_a one_o be_v do_v as_o a_o burden_n and_o the_o other_o be_v do_v with_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n now_o i_o shall_v show_v unto_o you_o how_o christ_n give_v this_o freedom_n where_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v there_o be_v liberty_n you_o know_v the_o scripture_n i_o suppose_v now_o this_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n come_v by_o christ_n these_o way_n first_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v come_v to_o christ_n it_o have_v rest_n because_o christ_n render_v god_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o a_o gracious_a way_n christ_n take_v off_o the_o terror_n that_o be_v before_o of_o god_n take_v off_o that_o from_o the_o heart_n the_o reason_n why_o duty_n be_v perform_v as_o a_o burden_n to_o those_o that_o be_v legal_a be_v this_o because_o they_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n but_o so_o as_o they_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n they_o must_v do_v what_o god_n require_v i_o but_o when_o they_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n they_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n as_o a_o judge_n be_v very_o terrible_a now_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o christ_n christ_n render_v god_n very_o amiable_a and_o loâ—ely_o unto_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o christian_a render_v god_n the_o father_n as_o his_o father_n or_o her_o father_n for_o so_o christ_n say_v i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n not_o only_o as_o a_o father_n but_o our_o father_n as_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n so_o believer_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o father_n in_o a_o double_a relation_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v beget_v i_o a_o new_a to_o himself_o and_o so_o he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v adopt_v i_o to_o be_v his_o child_n but_o he_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n too_o and_o christ_n be_v i_o two_o so_o that_o i_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o fatherhood_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o the_o father_n of_o christ_n i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n so_o when_o believer_n come_v to_o tender_v up_o any_o service_n to_o god_n as_o a_o duty_n they_o come_v to_o god_n as_o their_o father_n and_o as_o to_o the_o father_n of_o their_o redeemer_n too_o now_o this_o bring_v a_o mighty_a be_v the_o principal_a ground_n of_o all_o that_o god_n require_v of_o such_o as_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n mere_o that_o thou_o shall_v go_v out_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n for_o pardon_v thy_o sin_n and_o accept_v of_o thou_o in_o his_o son_n and_o so_o likewise_o if_o so_o be_v a_o man_n be_v among_o his_o enemy_n and_o shall_v be_v set_v to_o do_v your_o faith_n upon_o christ_n main_o that_o you_o may_v have_v peace_n that_o you_o may_v have_v enlargement_n and_o comfort_n as_o other_o have_v and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o your_o holiness_n be_v scant_o if_o you_o have_v exercise_v your_o faith_n in_o christ_n that_o you_o may_v have_v holiness_n than_o you_o may_v have_v have_v more_o peace_n say_v christ_n be_v it_o unto_o thou_o according_a to_o thy_o faith_n so_o in_o this_o case_n christ_n say_v to_o every_o believer_n be_v it_o according_a to_o thy_o faith_n according_a to_o what_o you_o exercise_v your_o faith_n so_o be_v it_o unto_o you_o as_o do_v you_o exercise_v your_o faith_n for_o peace_n and_o comfort_n and_o main_o for_o that_o you_o have_v some_o peace_n and_o comfort_n but_o you_o shall_v not_o have_v so_o much_o holiness_n but_o do_v you_o exercise_v your_o faith_n for_o holiness_n most_o then_o you_o shall_v have_v most_o holiness_n now_o certain_o a_o true_a christian_n prize_v holiness_n rather_o than_o peace_n and_o i_o know_v no_o sure_a argument_n for_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o difference_n between_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o one_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n than_o this_o the_o hypocrite_n will_v have_v holiness_n that_o he_o may_v have_v peace_n i_o but_o the_o true_a believer_n will_v have_v peace_n that_o his_o peace_n may_v increase_v his_o holiness_n second_o another_o rule_n be_v this_o though_o christ_n do_v give_v in_o grace_n increase_v of_o sanctification_n and_o holiness_n yet_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o what_o christ_n give_v in_o for_o the_o present_a but_o still_o keep_v thy_o heart_n sensible_a of_o the_o need_n of_o new_a supply_n there_o be_v many_o christian_n when_o they_o have_v be_v at_o duty_n and_o have_v exercise_v faith_n upon_o christ_n for_o this_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n and_o have_v get_v somewhat_o some_o enlargement_n and_o some_o quicken_n of_o spirit_n and_o some_o resolution_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n here_o they_o rest_v and_o now_o they_o think_v they_o be_v well_o they_o think_v to_o live_v upon_o this_o stock_n a_o great_a while_n but_o now_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o our_o daily_a bread_n and_o to_o depend_v upon_o christ_n for_o new_a supply_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n every_o day_n every_o moment_n according_a to_o every_o work_n that_o we_o be_v set_v about_o to_o go_v to_o christ_n for_o new_a supply_n as_o if_o we_o have_v nothing_o at_o all_o give_v we_o before_o and_o christ_n will_v be_v well_o please_v with_o this_o that_o though_o we_o have_v never_o so_o much_o grace_n yet_o to_o go_v to_o he_o to_o renew_v our_o faith_n as_o if_o we_o have_v none_o at_o all_o that_o iâ—_n as_o strong_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v that_o we_o shall_v apprehend_v that_o we_o have_v none_o at_o all_o but_o as_o strong_o and_o eager_o to_o exercise_v faith_n upon_o christ_n for_o new_a supply_n of_o holiness_n as_o if_o we_o have_v none_o at_o all_o and_o indeed_o those_o that_o seem_v to_o have_v none_o exercise_n faith_n in_o christ_n most_o three_o for_o conclusion_n of_o all_o take_v this_o as_o a_o rule_n those_o christian_n that_o do_v most_o converse_v with_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o bless_a way_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o will_v increase_v most_o in_o grace_n and_o they_o have_v this_o by_o way_n of_o sanctification_n i_o will_v give_v you_o but_o only_o that_o one_o scripture_n in_o way_n of_o allusion_n to_o apply_v it_o to_o this_o in_o act_n 4_o 13._o now_o when_o they_o see_v the_o boldness_n of_o peter_n and_o john_n and_o perceive_v they_o be_v unlearned_a and_o ignorant_a man_n they_o marvel_v and_o they_o take_v knowledge_n of_o they_o that_o they_o have_v be_v with_o jesus_n peter_n and_o john_n have_v much_o boldness_n they_o by_o much_o converse_n with_o jesus_n christ_n converse_v with_o christ_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o will_v mighty_o enlarge_v thy_o heart_n in_o grace_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v when_o you_o see_v any_o christian_a that_o perhaps_o his_o natural_a part_n may_v be_v but_o weak_a but_o yet_o you_o see_v he_o grow_v in_o grace_n mighty_o he_o have_v a_o mighty_a large_a heart_n for_o god_n and_o have_v much_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n and_o his_o conversation_n be_v very_o holy_a and_o convince_a you_o may_v conclude_v this_o man_n and_o this_o woman_n to_o have_v be_v with_o jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v converse_v much_o with_o jesus_n christ_n will_v you_o know_v whence_o it_o be_v that_o you_o see_v many_o poor_a christian_n not_o long_o since_o how_o they_o have_v grow_v in_o holiness_n and_o you_o think_v they_o have_v get_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o you_o have_v get_v they_o can_v depend_v upon_o god_n more_o and_o can_v rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n more_o and_o they_o have_v more_o spiritualness_n and_o more_o savour_n in_o their_o conversation_n and_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o sweetness_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n than_o you_o whence_o be_v it_o their_o mean_n perhaps_o be_v not_o more_o their_o outward_a mean_n their_o part_n in_o nature_n be_v not_o more_o whence_o grow_v it_o then_o will_v you_o know_v whence_o they_o have_v be_v with_o jesus_n they_o converse_v much_o with_o christ_n and_o you_o may_v have_v it_o too_o the_o reason_n why_o you_o have_v be_v a_o professor_n perhaps_o twenty_o or_o thirty_o year_n and_o you_o now_o grow_v old_a and_o yet_o perhaps_o weak_a still_o and_o it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o can_v be_v say_v of_o you_o that_o there_o be_v some_o hope_n that_o there_o be_v some_o good_a in_o you_o but_o for_o the_o seed_n and_o spark_n of_o divine_a nature_n that_o be_v in_o other_o spirit_n there_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n at_o all_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o this_o draw_n of_o sanctification_n from_o christ_n by_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n well_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o rest_n the_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n the_o rest_n revel_n 21._o you_o shall_v see_v it_o aim_n at_o a_o glorious_a time_n when_o christ_n shall_v give_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n at_o vers_fw-la 4._o and_o god_n shall_v wipe_v away_o all_o tear_n from_o their_o eye_n and_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o more_o death_n neither_o sorrow_n nor_o cry_v neither_o shall_v there_o be_v any_o more_o pain_n for_o the_o former_a thing_n be_v pass_v away_o of_o the_o first_o resurrection_n now_o after_o that_o time_n it_o appear_v that_o the_o devil_n shall_v be_v loosen_a and_o gog_n and_o magog_n shall_v gather_v themselves_o together_o against_o god_n people_n after_o that_o time_n but_o there_o be_v such_o a_o world_n here_o for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n a_o rest_n to_o be_v have_v from_o all_o affliction_n even_o here_o upon_o the_o earth_n to_o be_v hope_v for_o when_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v honour_v before_o all_o the_o world_n and_o all_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a man_n shall_v be_v subdue_v before_o they_o but_o further_a there_o be_v certain_o a_o rest_n of_o glory_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o that_o be_v to_o be_v add_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n when_o the_o saint_n shall_v keep_v a_o eternal_a sabbath_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o shall_v there_o be_v always_o exercise_v in_o praise_v magnify_v and_o blessing_n of_o the_o great_a god_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v shall_v that_o be_v such_o christ_n be_v a_o true_a rest_n now_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o that_o there_o be_v a_o faith_n of_o adherence_n that_o may_v bring_v rest_n though_o there_o be_v not_o a_o faith_n of_o evidence_n but_o now_o you_o will_v say_v if_o we_o may_v have_v both_o a_o faith_n of_o evidence_n as_o well_o as_o a_o faith_n of_o adherence_n it_o will_v add_v much_o to_o our_o rest_n now_o i_o will_v help_v you_o to_o some_o note_n whereby_o you_o may_v come_v to_o examine_v whether_o the_o rest_v you_o have_v be_v the_o glorious_a rest_n here_o speak_v of_o and_o two_o thing_n i_o shall_v do_v because_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o glorious_a rest_n many_o of_o god_n servant_n here_o in_o this_o world_n be_v under_o much_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n i_o shall_v give_v further_a rule_n how_o to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o rest_n that_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o christ_n and_o some_o rule_v likewise_o how_o to_o keep_v the_o rest_n when_o the_o

before_o the_o great_a god_n and_o come_v to_o have_v eternal_a life_n at_o last_o but_o for_o our_o come_n to_o christ_n and_o our_o rest_n in_o he_o that_o belong_v to_o the_o other_o point_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o open_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n chap._n xi_o of_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n and_o that_o there_o be_v corruption_n in_o the_o saint_n be_v a_o burden_n 1._o of_o grief_n 2._o of_o shame_n 3._o of_o fear_n 4._o of_o care_n 5._o of_o labour_n and_o toil_n the_o next_o burden_n be_v the_o burden_n of_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o saint_n those_o that_o be_v godly_a and_o have_v their_o part_n in_o christ_n and_o have_v come_v to_o christ_n already_o but_o yet_o they_o must_v come_v again_o and_o again_o that_o be_v though_o they_o be_v believer_n and_o have_v exercise_v faith_n to_o unite_v they_o to_o christ_n they_o have_v still_o remain_v in_o they_o much_o corruption_n much_o sin_n they_o must_v come_v to_o christ_n again_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o their_o corruption_n and_o still_o all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life_n to_o be_v exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v ease_v of_o the_o burden_n of_o remain_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o they_o that_o the_o corruption_n that_o yet_o remain_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v a_o burden_n i_o suppose_v every_o one_o of_o you_o can_v witness_v that_o be_v godly_a there_o be_v no_o godly_a man_n or_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n but_o know_v what_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o point_n be_v perhaps_o the_o other_o point_n of_o legal_a performance_n be_v such_o a_o point_n that_o many_o of_o you_o scarce_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v but_o because_o i_o know_v it_o be_v of_o exceed_a use_n to_o other_o though_o it_o may_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o many_o they_o must_v not_o loose_v their_o portion_n but_o there_o be_v none_o that_o have_v any_o spark_n of_o godliness_n but_o do_v and_o will_v understand_v what_o i_o mean_v and_o what_o i_o shall_v say_v in_o this_o point_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n that_o do_v still_o remain_v in_o the_o godly_a in_o the_o best_a that_o live_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o every_o one_o acknowledge_v it_o be_v in_o every_o man_n mouth_n almost_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o now_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o wicked_a and_o the_o godly_a the_o wicked_a have_v sin_n enough_o in_o they_o but_o it_o be_v no_o burden_n to_o they_o but_o the_o godly_a have_v their_o sin_n to_o be_v their_o burden_n the_o remainder_n of_o sin_n though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o little_a it_o be_v a_o most_o grievous_a burden_n unto_o they_o and_o to_o these_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v out_o of_o this_o text_n yea_o christ_n himself_o speak_v to_o they_o go_v a_o journey_n and_o know_v the_o end_n of_o his_o journey_n shall_v be_v very_o glorious_a to_o he_o if_o it_o be_v to_o receive_v a_o crown_n a_o kingdom_n though_o it_o be_v a_o boisterous_a that_o thou_o perform_v to_o god_n to_o be_v wage_n oh_o with_o what_o sweetness_n will_v thou_o go_v on_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v of_o thou_o thou_o be_v receive_v thy_o wage_n when_o thou_o be_v perform_v of_o duty_n in_o rom._n 6._o and_o the_o last_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n but_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n be_v eternal_a life_n through_o jesus_n christ_n at_o the_o 22._o verse_n it_o be_v thus_o but_o now_o be_v free_v from_o sin_n and_o become_v servant_n unto_o god_n you_o have_v your_o fruit_n unto_o holiness_n and_o the_o end_n obedience_n when_o he_o do_v account_v duty_n to_o be_v mercy_n and_o when_o mercy_n be_v turn_v into_o duty_n as_o when_o we_o turn_v god_n mercy_n into_o duty_n that_o be_v a_o argument_n we_o receive_v god_n mercy_n from_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o there_o will_v be_v link_n of_o god_n mercy_n towards_o
