beggar_n and_o that_o he_o have_v never_o trouble_v he_o with_o his_o prayer_n before_o 376._o heil_n mic._n p._n 376._o and_o if_o he_o will_v but_o hear_v he_o at_o that_o time_n he_o will_v never_o trouble_v he_o again_o this_o world_n be_v full_a of_o such_o profane_a blasphemous_a atheistical_a wretch_n but_o three_o this_o truth_n look_v very_o sour_o and_o sad_o upon_o such_o who_o be_v all_o for_o public_a prayer_n but_o never_o regard_v private_a prayer_n who_o be_v â—ll_o for_o go_v up_o to_o the_o temple_n but_o never_o care_v for_o go_v into_o their_o closet_n this_o be_v most_o palpable_a hypocrisy_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v very_o zealous_a for_o public_a prayer_n but_o very_o cold_a and_o careless_a as_o to_o private_a prayer_n he_o that_o pretend_v conscience_n in_o the_o one_o and_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o the_o other_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o grain_n matth._n 23._o 5._o matth._n 6._o 1_o 2_o 5._o and_o the_o devil_n know_v well_o enough_o how_o to_o make_v his_o market_n of_o all_o such_o hypocrite_n that_o be_v all_o for_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n but_o perfect_a gallio_n as_n to_o private_a prayer_n act_v 18._o 17._o such_o as_o perform_v all_o their_o private_a devotion_n in_o the_o church_n but_o not_o in_o the_o chamber_n do_v put_v too_o great_a a_o slight_a upon_o the_o authority_n of_o christ_n who_o say_v when_o thou_o pray_v enter_v into_o thy_o chamber_n he_o do_v not_o say_v when_o thou_o pray_v go_v to_o the_o church_n but_o when_o thou_o pray_v go_v into_o thy_o chamber_n but_o four_o this_o truth_n look_v sad_o and_o sour_o upon_o such_o who_o in_o their_o closet_n pray_v with_o a_o loud_a clamorous_a voice_n a_o christian_n shall_v shut_v both_o the_o door_n of_o his_o closet_n and_o the_o door_n of_o his_o lip_n so_o close_o that_o none_o shall_v hear_v without_o what_o he_o say_v within_o enter_v into_o thy_o closet_n say_v christ_n and_o when_o thou_o have_v shut_v thy_o door_n pray_v but_o what_o need_v a_o man_n shut_v his_o closet_n door_n if_o he_o may_v pray_v with_o a_o clamorous_a voice_n if_o he_o make_v such_o a_o noise_n as_o all_o in_o the_o street_n or_o all_o in_o the_o house_n may_v hear_v he_o the_o hen_n when_o she_o lay_v her_o egg_n get_v into_o a_o hole_n a_o corner_n but_o then_o she_o make_v such_o a_o noise_n with_o she_o cackle_v that_o she_o tell_v all_o in_o the_o house_n where_o she_o be_v and_o about_o what_o she_o be_v such_o christian_n that_o in_o their_o closet_n do_v imitate_v the_o hen_n do_v rather_o pray_v to_o be_v see_v hear_v and_o observe_v by_o man_n than_o out_o of_o any_o noble_a design_n to_o glorify_v god_n or_o to_o pour_v out_o their_o soul_n before_o he_o that_o see_v in_o secret_a sometime_o child_n when_o they_o be_v vex_v or_o afraid_a of_o the_o rod_n will_v run_v behind_o the_o door_n or_o get_v into_o a_o dark_a hole_n and_o there_o they_o will_v lie_v cry_v and_o sigh_v and_o sob_v that_o all_o the_o house_n may_v know_v where_o they_o be_v o_o it_o be_v a_o childish_a thing_n so_o to_o cry_v and_o sigh_v and_o sob_v in_o our_o closet_n as_o to_o tell_v all_o in_o the_o house_n where_o we_o be_v and_o about_o what_o work_n we_o be_v well_o christian_n for_o a_o effectual_a redress_n of_o this_o evil_a frequent_o and_o serious_o consider_v of_o these_o five_o thing_n first_o that_o god_n see_v in_o secret_a second_o that_o god_n have_v a_o quick_a ear_n and_o be_v take_v more_o with_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o be_v with_o the_o clamour_n of_o the_o mouth_n god_n can_v easy_o hear_v the_o most_o secret_a breathe_n of_o thy_o soul_n god_n be_v more_o curious_a in_o observe_v the_o message_n deliver_v by_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o be_v those_o that_o be_v only_o deliver_v by_o the_o mouth_n he_o that_o pray_v aloud_o in_o private_a seem_v to_o tell_v other_o that_o god_n do_v not_o understand_v the_o secret_a desire_n and_o thought_n and_o working_n of_o his_o people_n heart_n three_o it_o be_v not_o meet_a it_o be_v not_o convenient_a nor_o expedient_a that_o any_o shall_v be_v acquaint_v with_o our_o secret_a prayer_n but_o god_n and_o our_o own_o soul_n now_o it_o be_v as_o much_o our_o duty_n to_o look_v to_o what_o be_v expedient_a as_o it_o be_v 1._o 2_o cor._n 8._o 10_o chap._n 12._o 1._o to_o look_v to_o what_o be_v lawful_a 1_o cor._n 6._o 12._o wherefore_o cry_v thou_o unto_o i_o moses_n do_v not_o cry_v with_o any_o audible_a voice_n but_o with_o inward_a sigh_n and_o secret_a breathe_n and_o wrestle_n of_o soul_n and_o these_o inward_a discourage_v other_o from_o this_o duty_n of_o duty_n private_a prayer_n and_o that_o either_o by_o deride_v or_o vilify_n of_o the_o duty_n or_o else_o by_o deny_v of_o it_o to_o be_v a_o duty_n or_o else_o by_o their_o daily_a neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n or_o else_o by_o deny_v they_o that_o be_v under_o they_o time_n and_o opportunity_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o this_o duty_n in_o matth._n 23._o 13._o you_o have_v a_o woe_n pronounce_v against_o those_o that_o will_v neither_o go_v to_o heaven_n themselves_o nor_o suffer_v other_o to_o go_v that_o be_v willing_a to_o enter_v into_o a_o everlasting_a rest_n and_o so_o i_o say_v woe_n to_o those_o parent_n and_o woe_n to_o those_o husband_n and_o woe_n to_o these_o master_n and_o mistrise_n that_o will_v neither_o pray_v in_o their_o closert_n themselves_o nor_o suffer_v their_o child_n nor_o their_o wife_n nor_o their_o servant_n to_o pour_v out_o their_o soul_n before_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o corner_n o_o sir_n how_o will_v you_o answer_v this_o to_o your_o conscience_n when_o you_o shall_v lie_v upon_o a_o die_a bed_n and_o how_o will_v you_o answer_v it_o to_o the_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world_n when_o you_o shall_v stand_v before_o a_o judgement_n seat_n certain_o all_o their_o sin_n and_o all_o their_o neglect_n and_o all_o their_o spiritual_a loss_n that_o may_v have_v be_v prevent_v by_o their_o secret_a prayer_n by_o their_o closet_n communion_n with_o god_n will_v one_o day_n be_v charge_v upon_o your_o account_n and_o o_o that_o you_o be_v all_o so_o wise_a as_o to_o lay_v these_o thing_n so_o to_o heart_n that_o you_o may_v never_o hinder_v any_o that_o be_v under_o your_o care_n or_o charge_n from_o private_a prayer_n any_o more_o but_o second_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o exhort_v we_o to_o keep_v close_o to_o our_o closet_n to_o be_v frequent_a and_o constant_a in_o private_a prayer_n to_o be_v often_o with_o god_n in_o a_o corner_n the_o 20_o consideration_n already_o lay_v down_o may_v serve_v as_o so_o many_o motive_n to_o provoke_v your_o heart_n to_o this_o noble_a and_o necessary_a duty_n objection_n
but_o many_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o object_n and_o say_v we_o have_v much_o business_n upon_o our_o hand_n and_o we_o can_v spare_v time_n for_o private_a prayer_n we_o have_v so_o much_o to_o do_v in_o our_o shop_n and_o in_o our_o warehouse_n and_o abroad_o with_o other_o that_o we_o can_v spare_v time_n to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o our_o closet_n now_o to_o this_o objection_n i_o shall_v give_v these_o eight_o answer_n that_o this_o objection_n may_v never_o have_v a_o resurrection_n more_o in_o any_o of_o your_o heart_n first_o what_o be_v all_o those_o business_n that_o be_v upon_o your_o hand_n to_o those_o great_a business_n &_o weighty_a affair_n that_o do_v lie_v upon_o the_o hand_n of_o abraham_n isaac_n jacob_n moses_n david_n daniel_n elias_n nehemiah_n consideration_n see_v the_o first_o consideration_n peter_n cornelius_n and_o yet_o you_o find_v all_o these_o worthy_n exercise_v themselves_o in_o private_a prayer_n and_o the_o king_n be_v command_v every_o day_n to_o read_v some_o part_n of_o god_n word_n notwithstanding_o all_o his_o great_a and_o weighty_a employment_n deut._n 17._o 18_o 19_o 20._o now_o certain_o sir_n your_o great_a business_n be_v little_o more_o than_o cipher_n compare_v with_o they_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o on_o earth_n that_o may_v have_v plead_v a_o exemption_n from_o private_a prayer_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o business_n of_o much_o business_n of_o great_a business_n these_o may_v have_v do_v it_o but_o they_o be_v more_o honest_a and_o more_o noble_a than_o to_o neglect_v so_o choice_a a_o duty_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o much_o business_n these_o brave_a heart_n make_v all_o their_o public_a employment_n stoop_v to_o private_a prayer_n they_o will_v never_o suffer_v their_o public_a employment_n to_o tread_v private_a prayer_n under_o foot_n but_o second_o i_o answer_v no_o man_n outward_a affair_n do_v ever_o more_o prosper_v than_o they_o do_v who_o devote_a themselves_o to_o private_a prayer_n notwithstanding_o their_o many_o and_o great_a worldly_a employment_n witness_v the_o prosperity_n &_o outward_a flourish_a estate_n of_o moses_n abraham_n isaac_n jacob_n nehemiah_n david_n daniel_n and_o cornelius_n these_o be_v much_o with_o god_n in_o their_o closet_n and_o god_n blessed_v their_o blessing_n to_o they_o how_o 17_o gen._n 22._o 17_o do_v their_o cup_n over_o flow_n what_o signal_n favour_n do_v god_n heap_v upon_o they_o and_o they_o no_o family_n have_v be_v so_o prosper_v protect_v and_o grace_v as_o they_o who_o have_v maintain_v spiritual_a benefit_n be_v much_o with_o god_n in_o your_o closert_n but_o three_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v ten_o to_o one_o but_o that_o the_o objecter_n every_o day_n fool_n away_o or_o trifle_n away_o or_o idle_v away_o or_o sin_n away_o one_o hour_n in_o a_o day_n and_o why_o then_o shall_v he_o object_v the_o want_n of_o time_n there_o be_v none_o that_o toil_n and_o moil_n and_o busy_v themselves_o most_o in_o their_o worldly_a employment_n but_o do_v plutarch_n myrmecides_n a_o famous_a artist_n spend_v more_o time_n in_o make_v a_o bee_n than_o a_o unskilful_a workman_n will_v
