admonition_n be_v also_o for_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n praise_v god_n or_o give_v thanks_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o glorify_n of_o god_n great_a name_n be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o sing_n god_n name_n in_o vain_a this_o be_v grant_v but_o to_o say_v as_o some_o do_v that_o other_o lie_v in_o sing_v such_o psalm_n as_o do_v not_o express_v their_o own_o condition_n in_o every_o instruction_n to_o all_o man_n you_o have_v now_o see_v one_o end_n and_o use_v of_o sing_a psalm_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v well_o worth_a the_o while_n sermon_n may_v he_o not_o be_v well_o say_v to_o pray_v when_o he_o do_v so_o and_o why_o may_v he_o not_o as_o well_o be_v say_v to_o praise_v god_n when_o he_o stir_v up_o himself_o to_o that_o duty_n but_o to_o speak_v as_o the_o thing_n be_v such_o form_n be_v nothing_o but_o elegancy_n of_o expression_n in_o the_o use_n of_o which_o we_o do_v indeed_o praise_v the_o lord_n and_o this_o if_o our_o opposite_n have_v understand_v we_o have_v never_o be_v put_v to_o the_o trouble_n of_o answer_v such_o a_o objection_n and_o now_o i_o shall_v proceed_v to_o 〈◊〉_d inform_v weak_a christian_n how_o they_o may_v more_o especial_o improve_v some_o passage_n in_o david_n psalm_n as_o they_o be_v more_o suitable_a to_o their_o particular_a respective_a condition_n or_o affection_n and_o this_o be_v perhaps_o may_v not_o like_v so_o well_o of_o other_o composure_n whereas_o none_o but_o a_o atheist_n will_v find_v fault_n with_o the_o psalm_n that_o be_v pen_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o i_o say_v not_o what_o be_v say_v former_o no_o man_n composure_n can_v be_v answerable_a to_o those_o of_o god_n spirit_n i_o rather_o think_v that_o such_o psalm_n if_o any_o have_v they_o shall_v be_v fit_a for_o their_o own_o private_a use_n than_o for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n though_o for_o my_o part_n i_o do_v not_o encourage_v any_o to_o the_o private_a use_n of_o they_o with_o a_o neglect_n of_o david_n psalm_n but_o rather_o dissuade_v they_o from_o it_o for_o other_o song_n always_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v no_o vanity_n nor_o filthiness_n nor_o scurrility_n nor_o reflect_n upon_o other_o man_n good_a name_n which_o all_o christian_n must_v be_v far_o from_o they_o may_v be_v for_o honest_a delight_n and_o recreation_n for_o aught_o i_o know_v even_o as_o a_o man_n may_v play_v a_o lesson_n on_o a_o lute_n or_o other_o instrument_n to_o refresh_v his_o spirit_n three_o christian_n have_v need_v to_o watch_v their_o heart_n exceed_o more_n than_o ordinary_o when_o they_o be_v sing_v a_o psalm_n it_o require_v a_o good_a measure_n of_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n to_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n but_o more_o to_o sing_v in_o the_o spirit_n because_o as_o one_o say_v our_o sense_n be_v delight_v with_o the_o melody_n be_v apt_a to_o steal_v away_o our_o heart_n from_o spiritual_a fervency_n for_o certain_o we_o be_v exceed_o apt_a to_o be_v take_v with_o the_o melody_n and_o in_o the_o interim_n neglect_v our_o heart_n so_o as_o our_o spirit_n shall_v not_o work_v and_o be_v do_v when_o our_o tongue_n be_v a_o sing_n to_o remedy_v this_o let_v we_o sing_v with_o understanding_n and_o attention_n of_o mind_n in_o order_n to_o which_o it_o be_v a_o great_a happiness_n and_o help_n to_o devotion_n if_o we_o know_v the_o mind_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o all_o that_o we_o sing_v object_n what_o if_o a_o man_n understand_v not_o the_o meaning_n of_o what_o he_o sing_v sol._n he_o can_v then_o sing_v in_o every_o respect_n as_o he_o shall_v do_v but_o yet_o i_o shall_v offer_v this_o to_o your_o consideration_n not_o peremptory_o assert_v it_o to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o any_o that_o may_v be_v otherwise_o mind_v we_o some_o passage_n than_o ever_o they_o have_v before_o but_o what_o psalm_n be_v there_o that_o any_o understanding_n christian_n know_v not_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o sense_n of_o it_o though_o he_o understand_v not_o every_o particular_a passage_n and_o expression_n in_o it_o certain_o he_o that_o have_v a_o gracious_a heart_n can_v be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o main_a drift_n and_o and_o scope_n of_o any_o of_o david_n psalm_n as_o we_o must_v sing_v with_o understanding_n so_o must_v we_o sing_v with_o affection_n also_o act_v and_o exercise_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o we_o according_a as_o the_o matter_n that_o be_v sing_v give_v we_o occasion_n sometime_o we_o be_v to_o act_v faith_n and_o hope_n in_o god_n sometime_o holy_a desire_n after_o god_n sometime_o holy_a rejoice_n in_o god_n and_o sometime_o holy_a fear_n and_o tremble_a before_o god_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o have_v grace_n but_o we_o must_v act_v it_o as_o for_o instance_n when_o we_o sing_v that_o passsage_n psalm_n 119._o 5._o o_o that_o my_o way_n be_v dâ—…ed_v to_o keep_v thy_o sâ—…atutes_n the_o â—…esires_n of_o our_o soul_n shall_v be_v such_o as_o david_n be_v to_o obey_v so_o let_v we_o in_o sing_v of_o psalm_n for_o questionless_a in_o this_o duty_n we_o have_v occasion_n enough_o of_o so_o do_v while_o such_o heavenly_a matter_n be_v suggest_v to_o we_o for_o sweet_a meditation_n and_o solace_v ourselves_o in_o god_n and_o his_o word_n quaest._n some_o may_v ask_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o good_a when_o we_o be_v at_o our_o work_n to_o sing_v a_o psalm_n all_o the_o end_n of_o sing_v this_o be_v somewhat_o but_o there_o be_v more_o in_o the_o matter_n and_o to_o say_v truth_n sing_v a_o psalm_n be_v such_o a_o duty_n as_o will_v require_v the_o whole_a man_n there_o be_v no_o good_a exercise_n wherein_o our_o heart_n be_v more_o apt_a to_o miscarry_v than_o in_o this_o again_o thou_o must_v observe_v and_o watch_v in_o this_o duty_n as_o in_o prayer_n what_o answer_v god_n give_v in_o to_o thou_o and_o how_o thy_o spirit_n close_v with_o the_o heavenly_a matter_n that_o be_v sing_v so_o as_o thou_o be_v raise_v comfort_v cheer_v confirm_v or_o humble_v as_o there_o be_v a_o return_n of_o prayer_n so_o of_o praise_n too_o and_o in_o every_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n there_o be_v marrow_n and_o fatness_n if_o our_o soul_n be_v well_o dispose_v to_o relish_v and_o receive_v it_o in_o one_o word_n this_o be_v a_o excellent_a service_n and_o therefore_o the_o more_o difficult_a so_o as_o thou_o have_v need_v to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n with_o a_o bridle_n as_o david_n resolve_v to_o keep_v his_o mouth_n psal._n 39_o 1._o or_o otherwise_o thou_o will_v hardly_o rule_v it_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o this_o duty_n in_o order_n to_o sing_v duty_n with_o understanding_n and_o good_a affection_n i_o advise_v all_o you_o that_o can_v to_o look_v on_o when_o you_o sing_v our_o practice_n be_v you_o know_v for_o one_o to_o read_v if_o all_o have_v book_n and_o can_v read_v or_o else_o have_v learn_v the_o psalm_n by_o heart_n but_o if_o sing_v be_v a_o duty_n and_o we_o can_v do_v it_o without_o this_o help_n i_o know_v no_o reason_n we_o have_v to_o reject_v it_o they_o that_o can_v read_v themselves_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o hear_v other_o read_v nor_o be_v this_o read_v the_o psalm_n a_o unwarrantable_a invention_n of_o man_n bring_v into_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n as_o some_o have_v say_v but_o only_o a_o necessary_a help_n to_o it_o as_o pulpit_n be_v
of_o most_o concerning_o the_o nature_n end_n and_o use_v of_o this_o duty_n have_v give_v the_o great_a advantage_n unto_o other_o to_o seduce_v and_o draw_v they_o away_o from_o it_o if_o that_o admonition_n be_v there_o to_o act_v faith_n in_o a_o god_n almighty_a as_o david_n do_v and_o so_o to_o possess_v our_o soul_n in_o patience_n and_o confident_a expectation_n of_o deliverance_n in_o god_n time_n and_o way_n though_o our_o distress_n and_o danger_n be_v never_o so_o great_a if_o a_o man_n have_v grace_n in_o his_o heart_n the_o sing_n of_o that_o psalm_n may_v provoke_v and_o put_v he_o on_o to_o offer_v up_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n whatever_o his_o condition_n be_v and_o so_o it_o be_v very_o proper_a to_o any_o good_a christian_n case_n and_o that_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o four_o psalm_n viz._n to_o express_v the_o confidence_n that_o david_n have_v in_o god_n when_o he_o lie_v under_o the_o hard_a and_o heavy_a hand_n of_o cruel_a enemy_n who_o insult_v over_o he_o why_o may_v not_o any_o good_a christian_n in_o sing_v that_o psalm_n act_n faith_n as_o david_n do_v however_o he_o may_v learn_v his_o duty_n and_o what_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v when_o there_o be_v the_o like_a occasion_n beside_o there_o be_v a_o word_n of_o admonition_n not_o to_o look_v after_o comfort_n in_o any_o creature_n but_o to_o prefer_v the_o light_n of_o god_n a_o profession_n of_o david_n confidence_n in_o god_n and_o his_o take_a comfort_n thereupon_o when_o there_o be_v no_o help_n nor_o any_o hope_n of_o it_o from_o man_n but_o as_o he_o there_o say_v v._n 3._o all_o the_o foundation_n be_v destroy_v and_o what_o can_v the_o righteous_a do_v be_v there_o not_o much_o to_o be_v learn_v from_o the_o 14_o psalm_n concerning_o the_o folly_n and_o madness_n of_o profane_a one_o that_o fear_v not_o god_n and_o regard_v not_o man_n as_o also_o concerning_o god_n watchful_a eye_n observe_v all_o their_o way_n and_o do_n when_o they_o go_v on_o be_v true_a citizen_n of_o zion_n which_o we_o may_v do_v in_o sing_v the_o 15_o psalm_n and_o so_o learn_v what_o manner_n of_o man_n we_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o all_o conversation_n and_o godliness_n as_o ever_o we_o hope_v to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o the_o lord_n both_o here_o and_o hereafter_o what_o a_o lively_a description_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o resurrection_n have_v we_o in_o the_o sixteen_o psalm_n wherein_o the_o lord_n profess_v his_o delight_n in_o the_o saint_n on_o earth_n as_o his_o portion_n and_o the_o lot_n of_o his_o inheritance_n and_o proclaim_v to_o all_o the_o world_n that_o idolater_n and_o all_o despiser_n of_o his_o grace_n have_v no_o part_n nor_o lot_n in_o the_o precious_a fruit_n and_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n do_v it_o not_o become_v christian_n to_o sing_v that_o psalm_n and_o so_o to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o glorious_a conquest_n of_o christ_n over_o death_n and_o the_o grave_n by_o virtue_n whereof_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o triumph_v as_o the_o apostle_n direct_v they_o 1_o corinth_n 15._o 55._o or_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n that_o can_v minister_v occasion_n of_o rejoice_v in_o god_n more_o than_o the_o glorious_a victory_n we_o have_v in_o christ_n jesus_n over_o all_o our_o spiritual_a enemy_n when_o i_o consider_v these_o thing_n i_o can_v sufficient_o wonder_v at_o the_o peevishness_n of_o some_o people_n quarrel_v as_o they_o do_v at_o the_o sing_n of_o this_o or_o other_o the_o like_a psalm_n which_o be_v in_o effect_n to_o say_v they_o will_v not_o have_v christian_n to_o rejoice_v in_o god_n salvation_n sure_o i_o be_o that_o very_o many_o of_o david_n psalm_n set_v forth_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n kingdom_n and_o the_o beauty_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o providence_n in_o the_o administration_n of_o it_o as_o whosoever_o have_v any_o sense_n of_o such_o spiritual_a thing_n can_v but_o be_v ravish_v with_o the_o meditation_n and_o the_o remembrance_n of_o they_o i_o may_v perhaps_o weary_a some_o reader_n with_o so_o many_o particular_a instance_n however_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o other_o i_o shall_v crave_v leave_n to_o add_v a_o few_o more_o the_o 17_o psalm_n be_v pen_v as_o it_o be_v probable_a upon_o occasion_n of_o david_n persecution_n by_o saul_n now_o though_o we_o be_v not_o in_o the_o same_o condition_n yet_o we_o may_v be_v in_o somewhat_o a_o like_a case_n or_o if_o not_o so_o yet_o we_o may_v sing_v it_o to_o very_o good_a purpose_n while_o we_o thereby_o take_v occasion_n to_o consider_v that_o our_o innocency_n and_o uprightness_n be_v a_o singular_a argument_n of_o consolation_n in_o time_n of_o affliction_n that_o when_o we_o be_v under_o any_o suffering_n our_o great_a care_n must_v be_v to_o keep_v ourselves_o from_o sin_v and_o that_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o godly_a arise_n from_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n favour_n and_o gracious_a presence_n be_v better_a by_o far_o and_o rather_o to_o be_v choose_v than_o the_o present_a condition_n of_o wicked_a man_n flourish_v in_o all_o worldly_a wealth_n and_o have_v more_o than_o heart_n can_v wish_v the_o eighteen_o psalm_n teach_v we_o that_o god_n alone_o be_v to_o be_v acknowledge_v and_o honour_v in_o all_o our_o mercy_n and_o particular_o in_o deliverance_n from_o enemy_n or_o any_o danger_n it_o set_v forth_o the_o condition_n of_o god_n people_n in_o all_o age_n both_o as_o to_o their_o suffering_n and_o their_o safety_n and_o give_v we_o fit_a occasion_n of_o meditate_v on_o the_o glorious_a victory_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n of_o who_o david_n be_v a_o type_n in_o all_o his_o suffering_n and_o the_o glory_n that_o follow_v after_o they_o the_o nineteen_o psalm_n show_v that_o however_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o his_o work_n yet_o his_o word_n be_v that_o which_o make_v we_o wise_a unto_o salvation_n and_o that_o this_o word_n of_o god_n be_v so_o perfect_a as_o by_o compare_v our_o life_n and_o conversation_n with_o it_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o bewail_v our_o many_o infirmity_n and_o with_o all_o earnestness_n and_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n to_o beg_v grace_n and_o strength_n of_o god_n against_o the_o gross_a evil_n since_o we_o have_v that_o corruption_n within_o we_o
bewail_v their_o sin_n and_o to_o beg_v pardon_v and_o purge_v grace_n as_o david_n do_v of_o god_n in_o the_o one_o and_o fifty_o psalm_n and_o although_o every_o one_o case_n be_v not_o the_o same_o in_o every_o respect_n as_o david_n be_v yet_o he_o be_v very_o much_o a_o stranger_n to_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o spiritual_a estate_n that_o do_v not_o see_v cause_n enough_o to_o apply_v unto_o himself_o every_o passage_n of_o that_o psalm_n for_o the_o two_o and_o fifty_o psalm_n although_o it_o be_v pen_v upon_o occasion_n of_o doeg_n malicious_a and_o murderous_a practice_n yet_o it_o minister_v matter_n for_o our_o faith_n to_o work_v upon_o so_o as_o we_o may_v take_v comfort_n in_o god_n when_o we_o be_v in_o any_o trouble_n and_o peril_n upon_o the_o same_o ground_n as_o david_n there_o do_v viz._n because_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n endure_v for_o ever_o and_o all_o the_o people_n of_o god_n shall_v flourish_v and_o grow_v fresh_a again_o when_o all_o the_o ungodly_a shall_v perish_v the_o fifty_o four_o psalm_n pen_v upon_o occasion_n of_o some_o danger_n that_o david_n be_v in_o as_o the_o title_n of_o it_o show_v teach_v we_o whether_o to_o fly_v for_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n and_o what_o a_o happy_a issue_n we_o may_v expect_v while_o we_o can_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o god_n as_o david_n do_v even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o trouble_n the_o fifty_o five_o psalm_n show_v the_o necessity_n and_o distress_n that_o god_n servant_n be_v many_o time_n bring_v into_o patr_o by_o the_o falsehood_n of_o seem_a friend_n and_o partly_o by_o the_o cruelty_n of_o enrage_a enemy_n and_o how_o notwithstanding_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o they_o may_v by_o the_o prayer_n of_o faith_n prevail_v with_o god_n both_o for_o their_o enemy_n destruction_n and_o their_o own_o deliverance_n none_o therefore_o need_v to_o scruple_n the_o sing_n of_o this_o psalm_n but_o such_o as_o fear_v not_o god_n because_o they_o have_v not_o change_n ver._n 19_o sure_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o will_v suit_v with_o the_o necessity_n and_o occasion_n of_o god_n people_n for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o they_o and_o at_o most_o time_n i_o shall_v quite_o tire_v the_o reader_n patience_n to_o run_v through_o every_o particular_a psalm_n i_o have_v instance_v in_o so_o many_o as_o by_o they_o whoever_o be_v willing_a and_o have_v any_o understanding_n may_v judge_v of_o all_o the_o rest_n how_o proper_o and_o pertinent_o any_o of_o they_o may_v be_v sing_v special_o if_o there_o be_v as_o there_o ought_v a_o wise_a accommodation_n of_o they_o unto_o the_o several_a respective_a occasion_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o church_n and_o people_n of_o god_n i_o shall_v add_v this_o one_o word_n more_o that_o sing_v of_o psalm_n be_v in_o order_n to_o our_o edification_n and_o furtherance_n in_o grace_n and_o gracious_a practice_n as_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v that_o we_o may_v know_v more_o of_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n be_v more_o incline_v to_o do_v his_o will_n and_o act_n faith_n and_o all_o other_o grace_n with_o more_o vigour_n and_o life_n and_o faithfulness_n and_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n now_o if_o hear_v read_v pray_v communicate_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n be_v useful_a for_o those_o end_n why_o not_o also_o sing_v of_o psalm_n special_o since_o in_o that_o duty_n do_v as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v there_o be_v so_o great_a a_o advantage_n by_o serious_a meditation_n on_o those_o precious_a truth_n to_o act_v our_o grace_n to_o admonish_v ourselves_o of_o our_o duty_n to_o encourage_v ourselves_o against_o all_o danger_n and_o difficulty_n and_o to_o express_v those_o high_a thought_n we_o be_v to_o have_v of_o god_n according_a to_o his_o infinite_a excellency_n sure_o then_o if_o ever_o be_v the_o high_a praise_n of_o god_n in_o the_o mouth_n of_o his_o saint_n when_o their_o tongue_n be_v sing_v and_o sound_v out_o those_o great_a and_o glorious_a thing_n which_o god_n have_v both_o speak_v and_o do_v in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n wherefore_o i_o be_o bold_a to_o conclude_v that_o the_o duty_n be_v most_o useful_a and_o excellent_a and_o no_o christ_n a_o have_v any_o cause_n to_o complain_v except_o of_o his_o own_o unaptness_n and_o inability_n to_o do_v it_o as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v do_v and_o now_o i_o do_v again_o most_o earnest_o and_o hearty_o beseech_v and_o exhort_v all_o sober_a and_o godly_a christian_n to_o consider_v serious_o and_o sad_o of_o the_o premise_n be_v it_o nothing_o to_o neglect_v a_o duty_n so_o plain_o and_o so_o particular_o enjoin_v and_o prescribe_v as_o this_o be_v yea_o to_o persist_v in_o that_o neglect_n and_o justify_v it_o consider_v i_o beseech_v you_o who_o they_o be_v that_o first_o begin_v to_o question_v and_o decry_v this_o christian_a exercise_n consider_v too_o how_o far_o many_o of_o they_o be_v since_o fall_v not_o only_o from_o this_o but_o from_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o religious_a worship_n have_v they_o end_v where_o they_o begin_v you_o may_v haply_o have_v have_v some_o more_o probable_a pretence_n for_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n while_o their_o constancy_n in_o other_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o service_n have_v plead_v for_o they_o that_o they_o intend_v and_o desire_v to_o lay_v aside_o only_o what_o be_v at_o least_o more_o questionable_a but_o they_o have_v proceed_v you_o know_v to_o lay_v down_o all_o hear_n and_o pray_v and_o all_o outward_a act_n of_o worship_n as_o well_o as_o sing_v of_o psalm_n i_o say_v not_o that_o all_o and_o every_o one_o have_v do_v so_o already_o but_o many_o it_o be_v sad_a to_o think_v how_o many_o have_v renounce_v all_o ordinance_n and_o way_n of_o worship_n wherein_o god_n people_n be_v wont_a to_o wait_v upon_o god_n and_o pretend_v to_o no_o way_n of_o know_v god_n mind_n but_o that_o of_o immediate_a and_o extraordinary_a revelation_n and_o not_o so_o content_a they_o labour_v what_o in_o they_o lie_v to_o persuade_v other_o to_o the_o same_o course_n with_o themselves_o i_o show_v former_o why_o they_o begin_v here_o now_o i_o entreat_v you_o to_o consider_v that_o they_o who_o begin_v here_o know_v not_o where_o to_o end_v till_o they_o come_v to_o a_o profess_a rejection_n of_o all_o ordinance_n by_o this_o you_o may_v see_v if_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o what_o manner_n of_o man_n they_o be_v that_o first_o persuade_v to_o a_o neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n sure_o they_o that_o set_v they_o on_o work_n be_v such_o as_o like_v not_o the_o way_n of_o worship_n wherein_o we_o have_v walk_v with_o god_n since_o he_o be_v please_v to_o take_v off_o from_o our_o neck_n the_o yoke_n of_o romish_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n need_v we_o question_v it_o when_o so_o many_o print_a pamphlet_n have_v fly_v abroad_o to_o possess_v the_o people_n that_o our_o church_n minister_n be_v all_o false_a yea_o that_o our_o worship_n use_v in_o our_o assembly_n be_v all_o false_a what_o be_v the_o meaning_n think_v you_o of_o this_o can_v it_o be_v any_o other_o than_o to_o insinuate_v that_o we_o have_v be_v a_o long_a while_n out_o of_o the_o right_a way_n and_o that_o now_o and_o not_o before_o for_o these_o many_o year_n be_v bring_v to_o light_v the_o only_a true_a way_n of_o worship_v god_n and_o what_o must_v this_o more_o excellent_a way_n be_v but_o that_o which_o god_n people_n former_o depart_v from_o when_o they_o make_v a_o separation_n from_o rome_n i_o commend_v their_o wit_n they_o play_v their_o game_n very_o handsome_o but_o i_o hope_v such_o as_o have_v grace_n will_v be_v wise_a than_o to_o harken_v to_o such_o charmer_n which_o have_v already_o enchant_v so_o many_o unlearned_a and_o unstable_a soul_n to_o a_o utter_a forsake_n of_o our_o assembly_n and_o cast_v off_o all_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n though_o as_o i_o say_v they_o begin_v at_o first_o with_o slight_v that_o most_o excellent_a duty_n of_o sing_v david_n psalm_n and_o now_o christian_a reader_n thou_o be_v desire_v to_o trouble_v thy_o thought_n no_o more_o whether_o thou_o shall_v sing_v but_o rather_o to_o set_v thyself_o to_o a_o serious_a and_o sincere_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o there_o be_v ground_n enough_o of_o fear_n lest_o as_o the_o serpent_n beguile_v eve_n through_o his_o subtlety_n so_o thy_o mind_n shall_v by_o little_a and_o little_o be_v corrupt_v to_o cast_v away_o all_o the_o ordinance_n which_o jesus_n christ_n have_v institute_v for_o this_o end_n that_o by_o the_o use_n of_o they_o thou_o may_v be_v edify_v in_o grace_n and_o gracious_a practice_n and_o what_o if_o god_n shall_v so_o far_o leave_v thou_o as_o he_o have_v leave_v some_o know_v that_o man_n who_o dwell_v in_o fleshly_a tabernacle_n can_v hold_v

another_o when_o christian_n sing_v a_o psalm_n together_o 5._o it_o be_v clear_a to_o any_o that_o read_v the_o text_n without_o prejudice_n that_o speak_v in_o psalm_n must_v be_v by_o sing_v of_o they_o if_o he_o have_v say_v only_o speak_n teach_v and_o admonish_v then_o those_o man_n gloss_n may_v have_v have_v some_o colour_n of_o truth_n in_o it_o buâ—…_n since_o the_o apostle_n add_v sing_n and_o make_v melody_n it_o be_v clear_a he_o require_v the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n we_o contend_v for_o as_o to_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o objection_n viz_o that_o the_o apostle_n call_v for_o sing_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o not_o for_o sing_v with_o the_o voice_n i_o answer_v that_o though_o we_o must_v sing_v with_o the_o heart_n it_o will_v never_o follow_v that_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o sing_v with_o the_o voice_n for_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v too_o that_o we_o must_v not_o pray_v with_o the_o voice_n because_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v with_o the_o heart_n now_o what_o a_o argument_n be_v this_o i_o must_v hear_v the_o word_n with_o my_o heart_n and_o receive_v it_o into_o my_o heart_n therefore_o i_o must_v not_o hear_v it_o with_o my_o ear_n i_o grant_v we_o must_v sing_v with_o the_o heart_n and_o with_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n i_o e._n with_o a_o holy_a and_o gracious_a frame_n of_o spirit_n suitable_a to_o the_o matter_n that_o we_o sing_v or_o with_o thankfulness_n as_o some_o interpret_v or_o in_o sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n of_o heart_n from_o our_o very_a fowl_n as_o david_n say_v with_o my_o whole_a heart_n will_v i_o praise_v thou_o psal._n 9_o 7._o and_o psal._n 103_o bless_v the_o lord_n o_o my_o soul_n etc._n etc._n for_o if_o our_o sing_n or_o any_o other_o religious_a service_n be_v not_o with_o and_o from_o the_o heart_n god_n will_v have_v no_o regard_n to_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n that_o the_o apostle_n call_v for_o sing_v in_o and_o with_o the_o heart_n nature_n art_n part_n and_o common_a gift_n may_v enable_v a_o man_n to_o the_o outside_n form_n or_o bodily_a exercise_n either_o in_o sing_v or_o pray_v etc._o etc._o but_o the_o bodily_a exercise_n profit_v little_a god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o will_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o require_v we_o to_o sing_v and_o pray_v and_o perform_v all_o religious_a service_n in_o and_o with_o the_o heart_n i_o e._n sincere_o and_o from_o our_o very_a soul_n beside_o let_v it_o be_v consider_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o profane_a guise_n of_o heathen_n sing_v to_o the_o praise_n of_o their_o idol_n or_o of_o drunkard_n in_o their_o cup_n sing_v and_o say_v they_o know_v not_o what_o and_o only_o make_v a_o noise_n that_o they_o may_v be_v hear_v now_o he_o will_v have_v 19_o christian_n sing_v praise_n to_o the_o live_a god_n after_o another_o manner_n viz._n with_o grace_n in_o their_o heart_n understand_v what_o and_o consider_v how_o they_o sing_v beside_o the_o apostle_n consider_v how_o apt_a man_n be_v as_o austin_n say_v of_o himself_o to_o be_v take_v more_o with_o musical_a accent_n than_o the_o heavenly_a matter_n and_o therefore_o give_v a_o special_a caution_n for_o sing_v with_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o matter_n more_o than_o ordinary_a for_o man_n to_o keep_v their_o heart_n in_o order_n when_o they_o be_v sing_v of_o psalm_n but_o never_o intend_v we_o shall_v not_o sing_v with_o the_o voice_n but_o only_o he_o will_v have_v man_n with_o their_o mind_n as_o well_o as_o with_o their_o mouth_n to_o glorify_v god_n paul_n and_o silas_n sing_v praise_n unto_o god_n so_o as_o the_o prisoner_n hear_v they_o act._n 16._o 25._o they_o sing_v with_o their_o voice_n as_o well_o as_o in_o their_o heart_n to_o the_o lord_n have_v thus_o clear_v it_o from_o the_o text_n that_o we_o must_v sing_v with_o a_o audible_a voice_n i_o come_v in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o show_v what_o we_o must_v sing_v and_o hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n be_v be_v another_o question_n the_o great_a difference_n i_o find_v among_o interpreter_n be_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o some_o difficulty_n to_o distinguish_v they_o so_o as_o to_o determine_v precise_o what_o be_v psalm_n what_o hymn_n and_o what_o spiritual_a song_n many_o and_o various_a conceit_n of_o man_n i_o meet_v with_o which_o i_o shall_v not_o trouble_v you_o withal_o be_v the_o most_o of_o they_o very_o groundless_a i_o know_v nothing_o more_o probable_a than_o this_o viz._n that_o psalm_n and_o david_n psalm_n but_o such_o spiritual_a song_n as_o shall_v be_v upon_o occasion_n compose_v by_o some_o officer_n or_o member_n of_o the_o church_n 1_o cor._n 14._o 26._o for_o as_o in_o the_o primitive_a time_n there_o be_v some_o who_o have_v a_o gift_n of_o psalm_n so_o now_o also_o there_o be_v that_o have_v if_o not_o the_o same_o yet_o the_o like_a gift_n and_o such_o new_a song_n they_o grant_v may_v be_v sing_v but_o not_o any_o other_o sol._n 1._o in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o say_v first_o that_o in_o the_o primitive_a church_n some_o have_v a_o psalm_n or_o spiritual_a song_n dictate_v and_o inspire_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n though_o i_o dare_v not_o determine_v any_o thing_n peremptory_o concerning_o their_o manner_n of_o sing_v those_o psalm_n in_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n extraordinary_a if_o any_o shall_v pretend_v to_o such_o a_o extraordinary_a spirit_n i_o desire_v to_o know_v of_o they_o how_o other_o shall_v sing_v with_o they_o for_o if_o they_o sing_v only_o their_o sudden_a rapture_n it_o be_v impossible_a other_o shall_v join_v because_o their_o meditation_n will_v differ_v and_o so_o will_v their_o meet_a too_o and_o such_o sing_v will_v be_v nothing_o but_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o fool_n and_o the_o confusion_n at_o babel_n if_o it_o be_v say_v not_o so_o but_o one_o to_o sing_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o rest_n to_o psalm_n book_n than_o that_o of_o david_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o some_o officer_n or_o member_n in_o every_o congregation_n may_v do_v as_o much_o upon_o occasion_n i_o answer_v perhaps_o not_o nay_o without_o all_o peradventure_o the_o gift_n will_v not_o be_v find_v at_o all_o or_o in_o any_o tolerable_a measure_n among_o many_o christian_n and_o then_o when_o they_o meet_v and_o will_v be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n poor_a soul_n they_o shall_v have_v never_o a_o psalm_n to_o sing_v as_o james_n require_v james_n 5._o 13._o nor_o shall_v we_o upon_o this_o account_n have_v very_o psalm_n for_o the_o accommodation_n of_o david_n psalm_n to_o the_o present_a particular_a occasion_n of_o god_n people_n i_o shall_v speak_v more_o hereafter_o all_o i_o shall_v say_v for_o present_a be_v this_o that_o if_o we_o can_v accommodate_v they_o or_o any_o passage_n in_o they_o the_o fault_n be_v our_o own_o there_o be_v many_o i_o fear_v who_o can_v accommodate_v many_o passage_n in_o david_n psalm_n as_o when_o he_o profess_v his_o zeal_n for_o god_n love_v to_o god_n his_o word_n and_o ordinance_n and_o way_n of_o worship_n his_o integrity_n humility_n heavenly-mindedness_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o be_v because_o they_o have_v not_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o be_v in_o david_n and_o it_o may_v be_v their_o conscience_n can_v well_o broâ—…k_v such_o a_o word_n of_o admonition_n and_o conviction_n as_o they_o meet_v withal_o in_o many_o place_n and_o passage_n of_o david_n psalm_n but_o if_o we_o sing_v david_n psalm_n let_v we_o sing_v they_o in_o david_n tune_n and_o not_o in_o such_o metre_n as_o man_n have_v devise_v sol._n this_o reason_n will_v prove_v as_o well_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o read_v david_n psalm_n for_o may_v not_o a_o man_n as_o well_o say_v why_o shall_v we_o read_v they_o in_o any_o language_n but_o that_o wherein_o they_o be_v write_v and_o so_o farewell_n sing_v and_o read_v psalm_n too_o and_o if_o you_o say_v but_o as_o much_o it_o do_v not_o tie_v we_o to_o any_o form_n but_o leave_v we_o to_o our_o liberty_n for_o if_o we_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o a_o form_n in_o pray_v why_o shall_v we_o be_v tie_v up_o to_o any_o form_n their_o own_o soul_n they_o can_v sing_v in_o their_o heart_n nor_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o hence_o some_o complain_v they_o be_v much_o scandalize_v to_o hear_v profane_a and_o ungodly_a man_n in_o their_o sing_n of_o psalm_n profeâ—…s_v their_o repentance_n the_o integriâ—…y_n and_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n when_o god_n know_v there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o they_o therefore_o say_v they_o what_o do_v such_o man_n in_o sing_v but_o sound_v out_o so_o many_o lie_n yea_o and_o blaspheme_v the_o holy_a name_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o do_v of_o that_o duty_n and_o this_o in_o the_o lord_n always_o rejoice_v evermore_o god_n people_n have_v always_o matter_n of_o rejoice_v though_o they_o have_v matter_n of_o mourning_n one_o way_n yet_o they_o have_v matter_n of_o consider_v the_o subject_a matter_n of_o it_o and_o many_o other_o that_o set_v forth_o the_o work_n of_o god_n they_o will_v appear_v very_o fit_a to_o be_v sing_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n as_o the_o second_o and_o eight_o and_o other_o psalm_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n the_o 33_o 34_o and_o 37_o etc._n etc._n that_o treat_v of_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n so_o the_o 119th_o psalm_n that_o show_v what_o be_v the_o excellent_a use_n of_o god_n word_n and_o what_o affection_n we_o shall_v bear_v towards_o it_o at_o time_n of_o humiliation_n such_o psalm_n be_v to_o be_v sing_v as_o may_v seem_v to_o express_v our_o sense_n of_o sin_n our_o tremble_n at_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n or_o that_o set_v forth_o the_o calamity_n and_o suffering_n of_o god_n people_n at_o time_n of_o rejoice_v choose_v such_o psalm_n as_o mention_v the_o marvellous_a work_n of_o god_n in_o victory_n deliverance_n and_o other_o mercy_n show_v unto_o his_o people_n if_o thus_o there_o be_v a_o wise_a choice_n make_v i_o know_v not_o any_o occasion_n the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v at_o any_o time_n but_o there_o may_v be_v a_o psalm_n find_v to_o answer_v it_o and_o then_o if_o god_n people_n can_v with_o one_o mind_n and_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n what_o a_o pleasant_a and_o comely_a thing_n be_v it_o such_o a_o resemblance_n of_o heaven_n as_o hardly_o a_o better_a can_v be_v find_v upon_o earth_n only_o let_v our_o care_n be_v that_o our_o heart_n be_v well_o tune_v for_o that_o be_v it_o that_o make_v melody_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o lord_n you_o know_v it_o be_v not_o so_o comely_a when_o in_o the_o congregation_n some_o sing_v out_o of_o tune_n but_o the_o great_a absurdity_n of_o all_o be_v when_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o in_o tune_n though_o as_o i_o have_v show_v the_o impiety_n and_o profaneness_n of_o some_o do_v not_o hinder_v the_o acceptance_n of_o other_o yet_o it_o be_v more_o desirable_a and_o that_o which_o we_o shall_v hearty_o wish_v that_o all_o can_v so_o do_v this_o duty_n as_o therein_o to_o please_v god_n and_o profit_n their_o own_o soul_n sure_o if_o we_o sing_v as_o we_o ought_v somewhat_o will_v stick_v by_o we_o many_o sing_v and_o make_v a_o noise_n and_o that_o be_v all_o so_o they_o hear_v and_o pray_v to_o as_o little_a purpose_n yet_o other_o do_v these_o duty_n to_o their_o great_a advantage_n and_o edification_n in_o grace_n and_o gracious_a practice_n if_o admire_v god_n speak_v good_a of_o his_o name_n rejoice_v in_o his_o goodness_n and_o other_o his_o glorious_a infinite_a excellency_n sweet_a meditation_n on_o the_o promise_n servant_n expression_n of_o our_o good_a desire_n humble_v comfort_v and_o cheer_v our_o heart_n be_v good_a exercise_n let_v we_o not_o give_v over_o sing_v since_o there_o be_v no_o one_o psalm_n or_o part_n of_o a_o psalm_n buâ—…_n will_v â—…ster_v occasion_n of_o do_v one_o 〈◊〉_d i_o do_v the_o rather_o persuade_v to_o it_o because_o i_o observe_v many_o will_v not_o open_v their_o mouth_n to_o sing_v in_o the_o congregation_n and_o most_o neglect_n this_o duty_n in_o their_o family_n be_v not_o so_o frequent_a in_o it_o as_o christian_n be_v wont_a to_o be_v and_o i_o observe_v withal_o that_o few_o thrive_v well_o after_o they_o once_o neglect_v or_o scruple_n sing_v of_o psalm_n they_o begin_v at_o this_o common_o but_o seldom_o end_v here_o but_o proceed_v from_o evil_a to_o worse_o till_o they_o come_v at_o last_o to_o live_v above_o ordinance_n and_o duty_n as_o they_o call_v it_o but_o indeed_o live_v without_o they_o and_o so_o live_v like_o beast_n in_o the_o shape_n of_o man_n let_v other_o think_v as_o they_o please_v i_o never_o know_v christian_n thrive_v better_o in_o grace_n and_o knowledge_n than_o when_o repeat_v of_o sermon_n sing_v of_o psalm_n and_o such_o like_a exercise_n be_v more_o in_o fashion_n than_o they_o have_v be_v of_o late_a and_o let_v it_o be_v consider_v in_o what_o juncture_n of_o time_n sing_v of_o psalm_n have_v be_v so_o much_o deny_v and_o speak_v against_o even_o when_o all_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n have_v be_v as_o much_o slight_v by_o too_o many_o among_o we_o here_o as_o i_o say_v even_o now_o man_n begin_v but_o seldom_o or_o never_o stay_v but_o go_v further_o to_o question_n and_o decry_v all_o ordinance_n they_o begin_v here_o as_o i_o conceive_v for_o this_o reason_n because_o wrangle_a wit_n have_v some_o more_o specious_a and_o fair_a pretence_n whereby_o they_o can_v more_o easy_o entangle_v simple_a and_o unstable_a soul_n and_o so_o make_v they_o to_o scruple_n at_o this_o duty_n soon_o than_o at_o any_o other_o and_o to_o say_v as_o the_o thing_n be_v the_o ignorance_n
the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n obj._n but_o they_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o it_o they_o go_v on_o and_o sing_v a_o psalm_n and_o so_o think_v they_o have_v do_v god_n good_a service_n sol._n it_o may_v be_v so_o so_o it_o be_v in_o hear_v of_o sermon_n no_o question_n many_o be_v little_o affect_v with_o what_o be_v deliver_v though_o the_o minister_n press_v it_o home_o upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o deal_v never_o so_o plain_o and_o powerful_o yet_o i_o hope_v you_o will_v not_o say_v but_o the_o word_n of_o god_n preach_v have_v this_o end_n viz._n conviction_n or_o to_o and_o delight_n in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o other_o such_o expression_n which_o david_n use_v in_o those_o psalm_n sol._n we_o answer_v true_a it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o scandal_n but_o how_o far_o forth_o we_o shall_v consider_v anon_o he_o that_o sing_v david_n psalm_n and_o not_o with_o a_o sanctify_a heart_n as_o david_n do_v he_o lie_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o in_o his_o throat_n too_o but_o suppose_v such_o a_o one_o shall_v say_v david_n psalm_n or_o pray_v david_n psalm_n or_o read_v they_o out_o of_o a_o book_n or_o join_v with_o the_o minister_n in_o prayer_n where_o he_o be_v the_o mouth_n for_o the_o rest_n that_o do_v join_v with_o he_o do_v he_o not_o profess_v the_o like_a then_o when_o the_o minister_n who_o be_v the_o people_n mouth_n to_o speak_v to_o god_n declare_v the_o experience_n that_o he_o and_o other_o have_v have_v of_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o their_o soul_n when_o he_o profess_v or_o express_v godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n lament_v their_o infirmity_n indisposedness_n untowardness_n and_o frowardness_n of_o heart_n and_o further_o bless_v god_n for_o spiritual_a grace_n and_o the_o evidence_n of_o god_n love_n etc._n etc._n when_o i_o say_v the_o minister_n do_v thus_o in_o the_o congregation_n and_o profane_a man_n be_v there_o and_o pretend_v to_o go_v along_o with_o he_o in_o thâ—…s_n do_v they_o not_o lie_v in_o prayer_n since_o they_o never_o have_v experience_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o work_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o soul_n they_o never_o have_v any_o evidence_n of_o god_n love_n to_o they_o in_o all_o their_o life_n and_o why_o be_v we_o not_o as_o much_o scandalize_v at_o their_o pray_n as_o at_o their_o sing_n for_o though_o they_o make_v not_o such_o a_o noise_n with_o their_o mouth_n in_o prayer_n yet_o they_o do_v lie_v and_o profane_v the_o name_n of_o god_n as_o much_o in_o the_o one_o as_o they_o do_v in_o the_o other_o therefore_o if_o any_o be_v scandalize_v by_o they_o in_o the_o one_o why_o not_o also_o in_o the_o other_o sure_o by_o this_o reason_n we_o must_v not_o only_o forbear_v sing_v but_o pray_v with_o they_o nay_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n we_o may_v not_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n with_o they_o for_o a_o profane_a wretch_n do_v even_o in_o that_o also_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o powerful_o convict_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v be_v one_o day_n make_v to_o know_v what_o a_o sad_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o his_o mouth_n when_o he_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v unto_o the_o wicked_a god_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o declare_v my_o statute_n or_o that_o thou_o shall_v take_v my_o covenant_n in_o thy_o mouth_n see_v thou_o hate_v instruction_n and_o cast_v my_o word_n behind_o thou_o this_o argument_n be_v that_o which_o be_v urge_v for_o separation_n and_o if_o it_o hold_v good_a for_o separate_v in_o one_o it_o may_v as_o well_o hold_v for_o aught_o i_o see_v for_o separation_n in_o all_o duty_n whatsoever_o and_o so_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n also_o for_o hear_v the_o word_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a communion_n as_o well_o as_o prayer_n or_o sing_v i_o say_v there_o be_v communion_n with_o god_n in_o hear_v as_o well_o as_o in_o pray_v in_o prayer_n we_o speak_v to_o god_n and_o in_o hear_v god_n speak_v to_o we_o in_o prayer_n we_o profess_v ourselves_o to_o be_v the_o lord_n people_n to_o have_v all_o our_o delight_n in_o he_o and_o all_o our_o expectation_n from_o he_o and_o in_o hear_v we_o come_v to_o sit_v before_o he_o as_o his_o people_n to_o ask_v counsel_n of_o god_n and_o to_o know_v his_o will_n and_o there_o profess_v whatsoever_o the_o lord_n shall_v command_v we_o that_o we_o will_v do_v thus_o there_o be_v spiritual_a communion_n with_o god_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o in_o pray_v and_o sing_v of_o psalm_n so_o then_o if_o we_o may_v not_o sing_v nor_o pray_v neither_o may_v we_o hear_v with_o mix_a company_n and_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o very_a sad_a condition_n i_o say_v again_o if_o the_o presence_n of_o wicked_a man_n shall_v hinder_v their_o acceptation_n and_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o those_o duty_n which_o they_o notwithstanding_o do_v in_o the_o sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n out_o of_o all_o question_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o very_a sad_a condition_n because_o they_o can_v hardly_o assemble_v without_o great_a hazard_n of_o have_v one_o devil_n or_o other_o among_o they_o what_o then_o will_v become_v of_o they_o nay_o i_o will_v fain_o know_v with_o who_o they_o shall_v join_v for_o our_o saviour_n himself_o have_v a_o select_a company_n but_o twelve_o in_o all_o and_o one_o of_o they_o be_v a_o devil_n and_o so_o when_o you_o have_v do_v what_o you_o can_v and_o make_v choice_n of_o your_o company_n if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o black_a devil_n a_o profane_a wicked_a man_n yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o white_a devil_n a_o hypocrite_n which_o be_v bad_a and_o as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o the_o other_o i_o have_v hear_v that_o some_o have_v forbear_v prayer_n in_o their_o family_n with_o their_o child_n and_o servant_n because_o they_o think_v they_o not_o good_a enough_o to_o pray_v withal_o i_o desire_v these_o to_o consider_v what_o paul_n do_v in_o the_o ship_n before_o the_o company_n he_o sail_v with_o he_o be_v not_o so_o scrupulous_a but_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n even_o before_o profess_a infidel_n and_o heathen_n act_n 27._o 35._o he_o take_v bread_n and_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o they_o all_o because_o he_o know_v it_o be_v a_o duty_n which_o all_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v and_o though_o they_o do_v not_o nor_o can_v not_o do_v it_o as_o they_o shall_v yet_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n and_o therefore_o paul_n praise_v god_n even_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o those_o wicked_a man_n so_o may_v we_o do_v the_o like_a though_o wicked_a man_n be_v by_o and_o join_v in_o the_o duty_n what_o be_v that_o to_o we_o oh_a but_o it_o much_o trouble_n and_o distract_v they_o when_o they_o see_v man_n of_o profane_a spirit_n join_v with_o they_o and_o blaspheme_v as_o they_o say_v the_o name_n of_o god_n alas_o for_o they_o that_o they_o be_v so_o tender_a of_o god_n honour_n but_o be_v it_o so_o indeed_o or_o be_v not_o this_o another_o lie_n it_o be_v notorious_o know_v there_o be_v many_o great_a and_o horrid_a blasphemy_n against_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o i_o hear_v not_o much_o of_o their_o be_v scandalize_v at_o these_o but_o they_o be_v mighty_o scandalize_v to_o hear_v wicked_a man_n sing_v psalm_n but_o methinks_v if_o they_o be_v indeed_o scandalize_v at_o this_o they_o shall_v be_v more_o scandalize_v at_o those_o other_o blasphemy_n and_o true_o let_v i_o tell_v they_o their_o not_o be_v scandalize_v at_o those_o horrid_a blasphemy_n indeed_o before_o speak_v of_o be_v a_o very_a great_a scandal_n to_o many_o that_o be_v true_o godly_a oh_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o blasphemy_n in_o england_n than_o sing_v of_o psalm_n by_o wicked_a man_n and_o that_o one_o day_n in_o a_o week_n but_o do_v not_o the_o land_n mourn_v because_o of_o oath_n and_o be_v not_o many_o wicked_a one_o all_o the_o week_n long_o blaspheme_v the_o live_a god_n yet_o some_o of_o these_o man_n who_o make_v this_o objection_n have_v not_o show_v at_o any_o time_n that_o we_o have_v see_v so_o much_o dislike_n of_o these_o blasphemy_n if_o you_o be_v trouble_v at_o
