of_o man_n that_o be_v thou_o will_v not_o conceal_v nor_o pervert_v the_o truth_n for_o fear_n nor_o favour_n and_o then_o they_o propose_v a_o ensnare_a question_n to_o he_o tell_v we_o therefore_o what_o think_v thou_o be_v it_o lawful_a to_o give_v tribute_n to_o caesar_n or_o not_o they_o think_v it_o impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v give_v any_o answer_n to_o this_o which_o will_v not_o make_v he_o abnoxious_a either_o to_o the_o roman_a governor_n if_o he_o deny_v that_o the_o jew_n may_v lawful_o pay_v tribute_n to_o caesar_n or_o to_o the_o pharisee_n and_o people_n if_o he_o affirm_v that_o they_o may_v for_o there_o be_v a_o very_a potent_a faction_n among_o they_o who_o think_v it_o unlawful_a for_o the_o jew_n to_o own_o the_o authority_n or_o usurpation_n of_o any_o foreign_a prince_n or_o to_o pay_v tribute_n to_o he_o as_o to_o their_o king_n they_o be_v express_o forbid_v by_o their_o law_n to_o set_v a_o stranger_n over_o they_o for_o their_o king_n who_o be_v not_o their_o brother_n i._n e_o who_o be_v not_o a_o natural_a jew_n 17_o deuter._n 15._o and_o it_o seem_v they_o can_v not_o distinguish_v between_o their_o own_o voluntary_a act_n in_o choose_v a_o stranger_n for_o their_o king_n which_o be_v indeed_o forbid_v by_o their_o law_n and_o their_o submit_v to_o a_o foreign_a prince_n when_o they_o be_v conquer_a by_o he_o our_o saviour_n who_o know_v their_o wicked_a intention_n in_o all_o this_o that_o they_o do_v not_o come_v with_o a_o honest_a design_n to_o be_v instruct_v in_o their_o duty_n but_o to_o seek_v a_o advantage_n against_o he_o express_v some_o indignation_n at_o it_o why_o tempt_v you_o i_o you_o hypocrite_n but_o yet_o to_o return_v they_o a_o answer_n to_o that_o their_o question_n he_o bid_v they_o show_v he_o the_o tribute-money_n that_o be_v the_o money_n in_o which_o they_o use_v to_o pay_v tribute_n and_o inquire_v who_o image_n and_o superscription_n it_o have_v for_o coin_v of_o money_n be_v as_o certain_a a_o mark_n of_o sovereignty_n as_o make_v law_n or_o the_o power_n of_o the_o sword_n well_o they_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o image_n and_o superscription_n on_o the_o tribute-money_n be_v coesar_n upon_o which_o he_o reply_v render_v therefore_o unto_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v coesars_n and_o unto_o god_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v god_n the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o which_o answer_n be_v this_o that_o since_o by_o the_o very_a impression_n on_o their_o money_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o caesar_n be_v their_o sovereign_a lord_n they_o must_v render_v to_o he_o all_o the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n among_o which_o tribute_n be_v one_o as_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o render_v therefore_o unto_o all_o their_o due_n tribute_n to_o who_o tribute_n be_v due_a custom_n to_o who_o custom_n fear_v to_o who_o fear_n honour_n to_o who_o honour_n 13_o rom._n 7._o whatever_o be_v due_a to_o sovereign_a prince_n and_o do_v not_o interfere_v with_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n that_o they_o must_v give_v to_o caesar_n who_o at_o this_o time_n be_v their_o sovereign_n in_o which_o answer_n there_o be_v several_a thing_n observable_a 1._o that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o examine_v into_o coesar_n right_a nor_o how_o he_o come_v by_o this_o sovereign_a power_n but_o as_o he_o find_v he_o in_o possession_n of_o it_o so_o he_o leave_v he_o and_o require_v they_o to_o render_v to_o he_o all_o the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n 2._o that_o he_o do_v not_o particular_o determine_v what_o the_o thing_n of_o caesar_n be_v that_o be_v what_o his_o right_n be_v as_o a_o sovereign_a prince_n hence_o some_o man_n conclude_v that_o this_o text_n can_v prove_v nothing_o that_o we_o can_v learn_v from_o it_o what_o our_o saviour_n judgement_n be_v in_o this_o point_n that_o it_o be_v only_o a_o subtle_a answer_n which_o those_o who_o ask_v the_o question_n can_v make_v nothing_o of_o which_o be_v a_o proper_a return_n to_o their_o ensnare_a question_n this_o i_o think_v be_v as_o great_a a_o reproach_n to_o our_o saviour_n as_o they_o can_v well_o cast_v upon_o he_o that_o he_o who_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n the_o great_a prophet_n and_o teacher_n of_o mankind_n shall_v return_v as_o sophistical_a and_o doubtful_a answer_n as_o the_o heathen_a oracle_n and_o that_o in_o a_o case_n which_o require_v and_o will_v admit_v a_o very_a plain_a answer_n it_o be_v true_a many_o time_n our_o saviour_n when_o he_o discourse_v of_o what_o concern_v his_o own_o person_n or_o the_o mystery_n of_o his_o kingdom_n which_o be_v not_o fit_a at_o that_o time_n to_o be_v publish_v in_o plain_a term_n use_v a_o mystical_a language_n as_o when_o he_o call_v his_o body_n the_o temple_n or_o he_o teach_v they_o by_o parable_n which_o be_v not_o obvious_a at_o the_o first_o hear_n but_o still_o what_o he_o say_v have_v a_o certain_a and_o determine_a sense_n and_o what_o be_v obscure_a and_o difficult_a he_o explain_v private_o to_o his_o apostle_n that_o in_o due_a time_n they_o may_v explain_v it_o to_o other_o but_o to_o assert_v as_o these_o man_n must_v do_v that_o christ_n give_v they_o such_o a_o answer_n as_o signify_v nothing_o and_o which_o he_o intend_v they_o shall_v understand_v nothing_o by_o show_v that_o they_o be_v not_o so_o civil_a to_o our_o saviour_n as_o these_o pharisee_n and_o herodian_o be_v who_o at_o least_o own_a in_o compliment_n master_n we_o know_v that_o thou_o be_v true_a and_o teach_v the_o way_n of_o god_n in_o truth_n neither_o care_v thou_o for_o any_o man_n for_o thou_o regard_v not_o the_o person_n of_o man_n but_o certain_o the_o pharisees_n do_v believe_v that_o there_o be_v something_o in_o our_o saviour_n answer_n for_o they_o marvel_v and_o leave_v he_o and_o go_v their_o way_n and_o yet_o those_o who_o have_v wit_n enough_o to_o ask_v such_o ensnare_a question_n can_v not_o be_v so_o dull_a as_o to_o be_v put_v off_o with_o a_o sophistical_a answer_n a_o art_n below_o the_o gravity_n of_o our_o saviour_n person_n and_o office_n but_o will_v have_v urge_v it_o a_o little_a further_o have_v they_o not_o be_v sensible_a that_o they_o be_v sufficient_o answer_v and_o have_v nothing_o to_o reply_v for_o indeed_o can_v any_o thing_n be_v plain_a than_o our_o saviour_n answer_n they_o ask_v he_o whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o pay_v tribute_n to_o caesar_n he_o do_v not_o indeed_o in_o express_a word_n say_v that_o they_o shall_v pay_v tribute_n to_o caesar_n but_o he_o give_v they_o such_o a_o answer_n as_o withal_o convince_v they_o of_o the_o reason_n and_o necessity_n of_o it_o he_o ask_v who_o image_n and_o superscription_n be_v on_o the_o tribute-money_n they_o tell_v he_o coesar_n from_o whence_o he_o infer_v render_v therefore_o unto_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v coesar_n therefore_o wherefore_o because_o the_o tribute-money_n have_v coesar_n image_n on_o it_o therefore_o they_o must_v render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v coesar_n which_o certain_o signify_v that_o tribute_n be_v one_o of_o those_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o caesar_n and_o must_v be_v render_v to_o he_o as_o appear_v by_o its_o have_v coesar_n image_n not_o as_o if_o every_o thing_n that_o have_v coesar_n mark_n and_o stamp_n on_o it_o do_v belong_v to_o caesar_n and_o must_v be_v give_v to_o he_o as_o some_o man_n profane_o enough_o how_o witty_o soever_o they_o imagine_v burlesque_fw-la and_o ridicule_fw-la our_o saviour_n answer_n for_o at_o this_o rate_n all_o the_o money_n of_o the_o empire_n which_o bear_v his_o image_n be_v coesar_n but_o the_o money_n which_o be_v stamp_v with_o coesar_n image_n and_o be_v the_o currant_n money_n of_o the_o nation_n be_v a_o plain_a sign_n as_o i_o observe_v before_o that_o he_o be_v their_o sovereign_n and_o pay_v tribute_n be_v a_o know_v right_o due_a to_o sovereign_a prince_n and_o therefore_o the_o very_a money_n which_o they_o use_v with_o coesar_n image_n on_o it_o resolve_v that_o question_n not_o only_o of_o the_o lawfulness_n but_o the_o necessity_n of_o pay_v tribute_n and_o this_o be_v so_o plain_a a_o answer_n that_o the_o pharisee_n be_v ashamed_a of_o their_o question_n and_o go_v away_o without_o make_v any_o reply_n for_o they_o no_o more_o dare_v to_o deny_v that_o caesar_n be_v their_o king_n than_o they_o think_v he_o dare_v either_o to_o own_o or_o deny_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o pay_v tribute_n to_o caesar_n and_o this_o be_v all_o the_o subtlety_n of_o our_o saviour_n answer_n but_o then_o our_o saviour_n not_o confine_v his_o answer_n mere_o to_o the_o case_n of_o pay_v tribute_n but_o answer_v in_o general_a that_o we_o must_v render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v coesar_n extend_v this_o to_o all_o the_o right_n of_o sovereign_a prince_n and_o so_o become_v a_o stand_a rule_n in_o
as_o be_v absolute_a and_o unaccountable_a if_o there_o be_v no_o supreme_a power_n in_o any_o society_n when_o ever_o there_o happen_v any_o difference_n among_o the_o member_n of_o such_o a_o society_n nothing_o can_v be_v do_v and_o such_o a_o society_n be_v a_o arbitrary_a and_o voluntary_a not_o a_o govern_a society_n because_o there_o be_v no_o body_n to_o govern_v and_o no_o body_n to_o be_v govern_v they_o may_v govern_v themselves_o by_o mutual_a consent_n but_o if_o they_o can_v agree_v there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o their_o government_n where_o there_o be_v any_o government_n there_o must_v be_v somebody_o to_o govern_v and_o whoever_o have_v the_o power_n of_o government_n must_v not_o be_v contradict_v or_o resist_v for_o than_o he_o can_v govern_v for_o a_o power_n to_o govern_v man_n only_o when_o and_o in_o what_o case_n they_o please_v to_o be_v govern_v be_v no_o power_n now_o place_v this_o power_n where_o you_o will_v in_o a_o single_a person_n or_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o some_o select_a person_n or_o in_o the_o people_n and_o the_o case_n be_v the_o same_o where_o ever_o the_o power_n rest_v there_o it_o be_v absolute_a and_o unaccountable_a wherever_o there_o be_v any_o government_n there_o must_v be_v a_o last_o appeal_n and_o where_o the_o last_o appeal_n be_v whether_o to_o a_o prince_n to_o a_o parliament_n or_o to_o the_o people_n there_o be_v sovereign_a and_o absolute_a power_n which_o can_v be_v resist_v without_o a_o dissolution_n of_o government_n and_o return_v to_o a_o state_n of_o war_n which_o be_v a_o direct_a contradiction_n to_o the_o first_o institution_n of_o humane_a society_n and_o therefore_o that_o which_o can_v be_v allow_v by_o the_o fundamental_a constitution_n of_o any_o society_n the_o result_n of_o all_o in_o short_a be_v this_o 1._o that_o in_o all_o civil_a government_n there_o must_v be_v some_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a power_n 2._o that_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o supreme_a power_n be_v that_o it_o be_v unaccountable_a and_o irresistible_a and_o therefore_o 3._o whatever_o power_n in_o any_o nation_n according_a to_o the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o its_o government_n can_v and_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v resist_v that_o be_v the_o supreme_a power_n of_o that_o nation_n the_o high_a power_n to_o which_o the_o apostle_n require_v we_o to_o be_v subject_a and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o crown_n of_o england_n be_v a_o imperial_a crown_n and_o have_v all_o the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n belong_v to_o it_o since_o according_a to_o the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o the_o realm_n the_o person_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n be_v sacred_a and_o irresistible_a the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o supremacy_n those_o law_n which_o declare_v and_o acknowledge_v the_o king_n to_o be_v supreme_a in_o his_o dominion_n under_o god_n to_o have_v the_o sole_a power_n of_o the_o sword_n that_o it_o be_v treason_n to_o levy_v war_n against_o the_o king_n within_o the_o realm_n and_o without_o that_o both_o or_o either_o house_n of_o parliament_n can_v nor_o lawful_o may_v raise_v or_o levy_v war_n offensive_a or_o defensive_a against_o his_o majesty_n his_o heir_n or_o lawful_a successor_n that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a upon_o any_o pretence_n whatsoever_o to_o take_v arm_n against_o the_o king_n and_o that_o we_o must_v abhor_v that_o traitorous_a position_n of_o take_v arm_n by_o his_o authority_n against_o his_o person_n or_o against_o those_o who_o be_v commissionated_a by_o he_o these_o i_o say_v and_o such_o like_a declaration_n as_o these_o both_o former_o and_o of_o late_a make_v by_o both_o house_n of_o parliament_n and_o enact_v into_o public_a law_n be_v a_o sufficient_a proof_n that_o the_o supreme_a power_n of_o these_o realm_n be_v lodge_v in_o the_o prince_n for_o he_o who_o be_v unaccountable_a and_o irresistible_a be_v supreme_a but_o to_o avoid_v all_o this_o there_o be_v some_o who_o tell_v we_o that_o by_o the_o high_a power_n in_o the_o text_n the_o apostle_n mean_v the_o law_n for_o law_n be_v the_o high_a and_o most_o venerable_a authority_n in_o any_o nation_n and_o we_o ought_v indeed_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o prince_n who_o themselves_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o law_n which_o they_o be_v as_o much_o oblige_v to_o by_o virtue_n of_o this_o apostolical_a command_n as_o mean_a person_n for_o the_o law_n be_v as_o much_o superior_a to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v to_o their_o own_o subject_n and_o therefore_o when_o prince_n violate_v public_a law_n they_o be_v no_o long_o to_o own_v they_o for_o the_o high_a power_n but_o may_v vindicate_v the_o law_n against_o they_o may_v defend_v the_o legal_a authority_n of_o their_o prince_n against_o his_o personal_a usurpation_n may_v fight_v for_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n against_o his_o person_n but_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o we_o may_v consider_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v evident_a from_o the_o whole_a context_n and_o manner_n of_o speak_v that_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o here_o speak_v of_o law_n but_o person_n not_o of_o imperial_a law_n but_o sovereign_a prince_n law_n be_v never_o before_o call_v the_o high_a power_n neither_o in_o sacred_a nor_o profane_a writer_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d in_o the_o new_a testament_n always_o signify_v the_o authority_n of_o a_o person_n not_o of_o a_o law_n and_o hence_o it_o signify_v the_o person_n invest_v with_o this_o authority_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o prove_v this_o by_o numerous_a instance_n but_o it_o will_v be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v that_o thus_o it_o must_v signify_v in_o the_o text._n these_o be_v such_o power_n as_o be_v of_o god_n appoint_v and_o ordain_v by_o god_n which_o i_o suppose_v do_v not_o signify_v the_o law_n of_o every_o nation_n many_o of_o which_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o be_v divine_a they_o be_v express_o call_v ruler_n in_o the_o 3_o v_o and_o be_v the_o object_n of_o fear_n which_o can_v punish_v and_o reward_v if_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o the_o power_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o thou_o shall_v have_v praise_n of_o the_o same_o now_o i_o think_v no_o law_n but_o the_o power_n which_o execute_v law_n can_v apply_v punishment_n or_o reward_n according_a to_o man_n desert_n and_o in_o the_o 4_o v_o this_o very_a power_n be_v call_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n and_o say_v to_o bear_v the_o sword_n which_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o law_n but_o person_n and_o in_o the_o text_n the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o resist_v these_o power_n oppose_v force_n to_o force_v now_o though_o law_n may_v be_v disobey_v it_o be_v only_a lawgiver_n and_o ruler_n who_o be_v capable_a of_o resistance_n 2._o but_o however_o these_o high_a power_n may_v signify_v prince_n and_o ruler_n as_o govern_v according_a to_o know_a law_n no_o this_o can_v be_v neither_o because_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o such_o power_n as_o be_v under_o the_o government_n of_o no_o law_n as_o it_o be_v sufficient_o know_v the_o roman_a emperor_n be_v not_o their_o will_n be_v their_o law_n and_o they_o make_v or_o repeal_v law_n at_o their_o pleasure_n this_o epistle_n be_v write_v either_o under_o claudius_n or_o nero_n and_o i_o think_v i_o need_v not_o tell_v you_o that_o neither_o of_o those_o emperor_n have_v any_o great_a reverence_n for_o law_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o high_a power_n to_o who_o the_o apostle_n command_v they_o to_o be_v subject_a and_o indeed_o though_o there_o be_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o a_o prince_n who_o by_o the_o fundamental_a constitution_n of_o his_o kingdom_n aught_o to_o govern_v by_o law_n and_o a_o prince_n who_o will_n be_v his_o law_n yet_o no_o law_n can_v come_v into_o the_o notion_n and_o definition_n of_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a power_n such_o a_o prince_n be_v under_o the_o direction_n but_o can_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v under_o the_o government_n of_o the_o law_n because_o there_o be_v no_o superior_a power_n to_o take_v cognizance_n of_o his_o breach_n of_o it_o and_o a_o law_n have_v no_o authority_n to_o govern_v where_o there_o be_v no_o power_n to_o punish_v but_o i_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o discourse_v this_o more_o large_o hereafter_o 3._o let_v we_o now_o consider_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o be_v subject_n now_o subjection_n according_a to_o its_o full_a latitude_n of_o signification_n include_v all_o those_o duty_n which_o we_o owe_v to_o sovereign_a prince_n a_o cheerful_a and_o willing_a obedience_n to_o all_o their_o just_a and_o lawful_a command_n a_o humble_a submission_n to_o their_o reproof_n and_o censure_n correction_n and_o punishment_n to_o honour_n and_o reverence_n their_o person_n and_o authority_n to_o pay_v custom_n and_o tribute_n and_o all_o legal_a tax_n and_o imposition_n as_o our_o apostle_n add_v verse_n the_o 7._o render_v therefore_o unto_o all_o
all_o case_n to_o give_v to_o caesar_n what_o be_v coesar_n due_a and_o when_o our_o saviour_n command_v we_o to_o render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesar_n without_o tell_v we_o what_o coesar_n thing_n be_v this_o be_v so_o far_o from_o make_v his_o answer_n doubtful_a and_o ambiguous_a and_o of_o no_o use_n in_o this_o present_a controversy_n that_o it_o suggest_v to_o we_o three_o plain_a and_o natural_a consequence_n which_o be_v sufficient_a to_o end_v this_o whole_a dispute_n 1._o that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o make_v any_o alteration_n in_o the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n but_o what_o right_n he_o find_v sovereign_a prince_n possess_v of_o he_o leave_v they_o in_o the_o quiet_a possession_n of_o for_o have_v he_o intend_v to_o make_v any_o change_n in_o this_o matter_n he_o will_v not_o have_v give_v such_o a_o general_a rule_n to_o render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesar_n without_o specify_v what_o these_o thing_n be_v 2._o and_o therefore_o he_o leave_v they_o to_o the_o know_a law_n of_o the_o empire_n to_o determine_v what_o be_v coesar_n right_a whatever_o be_v essential_a to_o the_o notion_n of_o sovera_v power_n whatever_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n of_o nation_n determine_v to_o be_v coesar_n right_a that_o they_o must_v render_v to_o he_o for_o he_o will_v make_v no_o alteration_n in_o this_o matter_n so_o that_o subjection_n to_o prince_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v as_o plain_o determine_v by_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o law_n as_o pay_v tribute_n for_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v as_o essential_a a_o right_n of_o sovereign_a power_n and_o as_o inseparable_a from_o the_o notion_n of_o it_o as_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v so_o it_o be_v acknowledge_v by_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n of_o nation_n and_o so_o it_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o apostle_n st._n paul_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v hereafter_o 3._o i_o observe_v far_o that_o when_o our_o saviour_n join_v our_o duty_n to_o our_o prince_n with_o our_o duty_n to_o our_o god_n render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesars_n and_o to_o god_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v god_n he_o except_v nothing_o from_o coesar_n right_a which_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nation_n be_v due_a to_o sovereign_a prince_n but_o what_o be_v a_o violation_n of_o and_o a_o encroachment_n on_o god_n right_a and_o sovereignty_n that_o be_v we_o must_v pay_v all_o that_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n which_o be_v consistent_a with_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n this_o be_v the_o only_a limit_n our_o saviour_n set_v to_o our_o duty_n to_o prince_n if_o they_o shall_v command_v we_o to_o renounce_v our_o religion_n and_o worship_v false_a god_n if_o they_o shall_v challenge_v divine_a honour_n to_o themselves_o as_o some_o of_o the_o roman_a emperor_n do_v this_o we_o must_v not_o do_v because_o it_o be_v to_o renounce_v obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o god_n who_o have_v a_o more_o sovereign_a power_n and_o a_o great_a right_n in_o we_o than_o our_o prince_n but_o all_o active_a and_o passive_a obedience_n which_o be_v consistent_a with_o a_o good_a conscience_n towards_o god_n and_o require_v of_o we_o by_o the_o law_n of_o our_o country_n and_o the_o essential_a right_n of_o sovereignty_n be_v what_o we_o owe_v to_o our_o prince_n and_o what_o by_o our_o saviour_n command_n we_o must_v render_v to_o he_o this_o i_o hope_n be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o explication_n of_o our_o saviour_n answer_n to_o the_o pharisee_n and_o herodian_o which_o evident_o contain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n enforce_v on_o we_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o our_o saviour_n himself_o 2._o our_o saviour_n rebuke_n to_o st._n peter_n when_o he_o draw_v his_o sword_n and_o strike_v a_o servant_n of_o the_o high_a priest_n and_o smite_v off_o his_o ear_n be_v as_o plain_a a_o declaration_n against_o resistance_n as_o word_n can_v make_v it_o 26_o mat._n 52._o then_o say_v jesus_n unto_o he_o put_v up_o thy_o sword_n into_o his_o place_n for_o all_o they_o that_o take_v the_o sword_n shall_v perish_v with_o the_o sword_n for_o the_o understanding_n of_o which_o we_o must_v consider_v upon_o what_o occasion_n st._n peter_n draw_v his_o sword_n for_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o our_o saviour_n do_v absolute_o forbid_v the_o use_n of_o the_o sword_n which_o be_v to_o destroy_v all_o civil_a government_n and_o the_o power_n of_o prince_n and_o to_o proclaim_v impunity_n to_o all_o the_o villainy_n which_o be_v commit_v in_o the_o world_n the_o sword_n be_v necessary_a to_o punish_v wickedness_n and_o to_o protect_v the_o innocent_a in_o the_o hand_n of_o prince_n it_o be_v a_o instrument_n of_o justice_n as_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o that_o they_o bear_v not_o the_o sword_n in_o vain_a but_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n revenger_n to_o execute_v wrath_n upon_o he_o that_o do_v evil_a 13_o rom._n 4._o in_o the_o hand_n of_o private_a person_n it_o may_v be_v lawful_o use_v in_o self-defence_n thus_o our_o saviour_n a_o little_a before_o his_o crucifixion_n give_v commission_n to_o his_o disciple_n to_o furnish_v themselves_o with_o sword_n though_o they_o part_v with_o their_o garment_n for_o the_o purchase_n 22_o luke_n 36._o which_o we_o may_v suppose_v be_v not_o design_v as_o a_o mere_a modish_n and_o fashionable_a thing_n but_o to_o defend_v themselves_o from_o the_o private_a assault_n of_o robber_n and_o suchlike_a common_a enemy_n who_o as_o josephus_n tell_v we_o be_v very_o numerous_a at_o that_o time_n for_o no_o man_n want_v authority_n to_o defend_v his_o life_n against_o he_o who_o have_v no_o authority_n to_o take_v it_o away_o but_o the_o case_n of_o st._n peter_n be_v very_o different_a he_o draw_v his_o sword_n indeed_o in_o his_o master_n defence_n but_o against_o a_o lawful_a authority_n the_o officer_n of_o the_o chief_a priest_n and_o pharisee_n come_v with_o judas_n to_o the_o place_n where_o jesus_n be_v to_o seize_v on_o he_o this_o be_v a_o lawful_a authority_n though_o employ_v upon_o a_o very_a unjust_a errand_n but_o authority_n must_v not_o be_v resist_v though_o in_o defence_n of_o the_o great_a innocence_n man_n who_o draw_v their_o sword_n against_o lawful_a power_n shall_v perish_v with_o the_o sword_n which_o do_v not_o signify_v what_o the_o event_n shall_v always_o be_v but_o what_o be_v the_o desert_n and_o merit_n of_o the_o action_n rebel_n may_v sometime_o be_v prosperous_a but_o they_o always_o deserve_v punishment_n and_o if_o they_o escape_v the_o sword_n in_o this_o world_n st._n paul_n tell_v we_o they_o shall_v receive_v damnation_n in_o the_o next_o what_o can_v be_v say_v more_o express_o against_o resistance_n than_o this_o st._n peter_n never_o can_v have_v draw_v his_o sword_n in_o a_o better_a cause_n never_o in_o the_o defence_n of_o a_o more_o sacred_a person_n if_o we_o may_v defend_v oppress_v innocence_n against_o a_o lawful_a authority_n if_o we_o may_v oppose_v unjust_a and_o illegal_a violence_n if_o any_o obligation_n of_o friendship_n gratitude_n or_o religion_n itself_o can_v justify_v resistance_n st._n peter_n have_v not_o meet_v with_o this_o rebuke_n what_o shall_v he_o tame_o suffer_v his_o lord_n and_o master_n to_o be_v betray_v the_o most_o admirable_a example_n of_o universal_a righteousness_n and_o goodness_n that_o ever_o appear_v in_o the_o world_n shall_v one_o who_o have_v do_v no_o evil_n who_o have_v neither_o offend_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n nor_o man_n who_o have_v spend_v his_o whole_a time_n in_o do_v good_a be_v so_o barbarous_o use_v and_o treat_v like_o the_o vile_a malefactor_n shall_v he_o who_o be_v so_o famous_a for_o miracle_n who_o give_v eye_n to_o the_o blind_a and_o foot_n to_o the_o lame_a shall_v he_o who_o be_v the_o great_a prophet_n send_v from_o god_n to_o instruct_v the_o world_n shall_v their_o dear_a master_n be_v hale_v away_o from_o they_o and_o they_o stand_v by_o and_o see_v it_o &_o suffer_v it_o thus_o might_n s._n peter_n have_v argue_v for_o himself_o but_o though_o it_o be_v a_o very_a unjust_a action_n yet_o it_o be_v do_v by_o a_o just_a authority_n and_o lawful_a power_n must_v not_o be_v resist_v though_o it_o be_v in_o defence_n of_o the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n and_o if_o st._n peter_n may_v not_o use_v the_o sword_n in_o defence_n of_o christ_n person_n there_o be_v much_o less_o pretence_n to_o fight_v for_o his_o religion_n for_o though_o some_o call_v this_o fight_n for_o religion_n it_o be_v only_o fight_v for_o themselves_o man_n may_v keep_v their_o religion_n if_o they_o please_v in_o despite_n of_o earthly_a power_n and_o therefore_o no_o power_n can_v hurt_v religion_n though_o they_o may_v persecute_v the_o professor_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o when_o man_n take_v up_o arm_n to_o avoid_v persecution_n it_o
