shall_v scoff_n at_o we_o for_o good_a then_o that_o god_n shall_v plague_v we_o for_o evil_a what_o a_o shame_n be_v it_o for_o we_o therefore_o that_o when_o we_o he_o be_v wicked_a heretic_n speak_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o profane_a atheist_n break_v his_o law_n and_o blaspheme_v his_o name_n we_o shall_v pluck_v in_o our_o horn_n and_o become_v mute_a as_o though_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o some_o great_a discredit_n for_o we_o to_o speak_v for_o that_o which_o god_n himself_o in_o his_o own_o person_n have_v speak_v unto_o us._n three_o this_o serve_v to_o prove_v this_o law_n to_o be_v spiritual_a for_o such_o a_o one_o as_o god_n be_v which_o make_v the_o law_n such_o a_o one_o be_v that_o law_n which_o he_o make_v it_o reach_v therefore_o to_o the_o inward_a hart_n of_o every_o man_n and_o lie_v close_o upon_o his_o conscience_n and_o indeed_o in_o this_o it_o do_v especial_o differ_v from_o the_o law_n of_o man_n for_o they_o do_v tie_v the_o tongue_n and_o the_o hand_n and_o the_o foot_n to_o the_o good_a upbearance_n and_o take_v notice_n if_o any_o oft_o this_o be_v faulty_a against_o they_o but_o they_o meddle_v not_o with_o the_o hart_n and_o make_v no_o question_n of_o the_o inward_a motion_n of_o the_o soul_n because_o man_n can_v bring_v in_o no_o proof_n of_o the_o breach_n of_o such_o a_o law_n nor_o can_v have_v no_o witness_n of_o such_o fault_n but_o god_n search_v the_o hart_n and_o tri_v the_o reins_n &_o enter_v into_o the_o secret_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o he_o command_v to_o love_v he_o with_o all_o our_o hart_n and_o with_o all_o our_o soul_n not_o content_v with_o such_o a_o love_n only_o as_o be_v declare_v by_o the_o outward_a behaviour_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o for_o our_o neighbour_n he_o command_v every_o one_o to_o love_v his_o neighbour_n as_o himself_o now_o we_o know_v that_o man_n do_v love_v themselves_o with_o a_o deep_a and_o inward_a love_n not_o outward_o only_a in_o salutation_n and_o courtesy_n and_o good_a speech_n but_o every_o man_n love_v himself_o in_o truth_n with_o a_o good_a meaning_n and_o in_o good_a earnest_n not_o dissemble_o so_o must_v all_o the_o obedience_n perform_v to_o god_n proceed_v from_o within_o and_o come_v from_o the_o hart_n else_o it_o shall_v be_v no_o whit_n acceptable_a to_o he_o that_o that_o grow_v without_o if_o it_o come_v not_o from_o the_o root_n of_o uprightness_n and_o sincerity_n
with_o idolater_n for_o this_o be_v to_o join_v ourselves_o to_o those_o that_o hate_v god_n and_o for_o this_o jehosaphat_n be_v reprove_v what_o say_v the_o prophet_n will_v thou_o love_v those_o that_o hate_n god_n &_o help_v they_o what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o be_v so_o friendly_a &_o familiar_a with_o god_n enemy_n yet_o if_o one_o have_v come_v to_o ahab_n and_o tell_v he_o that_o he_o have_v hate_v god_n he_o will_v have_v defy_v he_o and_o say_v that_o he_o have_v love_v god_n as_o well_o as_o the_o best_a but_o that_o be_v no_o matter_n what_o ahab_n will_v say_v so_o long_o as_o god_n account_v he_o a_o enemy_n jehoshaphat_n shall_v have_v have_v no_o society_n nor_o friendship_n with_o he_o so_o that_o they_o be_v much_o to_o be_v condemn_v that_o will_v seem_v to_o have_v some_o care_n of_o religion_n themselves_o and_o to_o look_v to_o their_o own_o way_n that_o they_o be_v good_a but_o yet_o they_o can_v be_v familiar_a &_o make_v friendship_n with_o idolater_n and_o profess_a superstitious_a person_n why_o but_o be_v not_o this_o a_o hatred_n of_o god_n and_o be_v not_o you_o then_o subject_a to_o that_o reproof_n of_o jehoshaphat_n what_o will_v thou_o love_v they_o that_o hate_v i_o no_o man_n will_v be_v know_v to_o be_v a_o familiar_a friend_n to_o a_o open_a traitor_n that_o the_o king_n &_o counsel_n have_v proclaim_v a_o traitor_n for_o fear_v lest_o he_o shall_v be_v taint_v with_o some_o suspicion_n of_o treason_n and_o in_o deed_n he_o that_o will_v be_v so_o conversant_a and_o so_o well_o acquaint_v with_o such_o as_o god_n have_v proclaim_v traitor_n those_o that_o have_v any_o spiritual_a wisdom_n and_o true_a love_n of_o god_n may_v not_o without_o just_a cause_n vehement_o suspect_v he_o as_o one_o that_o himself_o bear_v no_o great_a good_a will_n to_o god_n and_o his_o pure_a religion_n and_o show_v mercy_n to_o thousand_o of_o they_o that_o etc._n etc._n in_o that_o that_o god_n promise_v to_o show_v mercy_n to_o thousand_o of_o they_o that_o love_v he_o &_o keep_v his_o commandment_n we_o learn_v that_o the_o best_a way_n for_o any_o man_n to_o do_v good_a to_o his_o child_n be_v to_o be_v godly_a now_o possess_v of_o a_o double_a blessing_n for_o his_o father_n prayer_n and_o for_o his_o own_o prayer_n for_o his_o father_n mercy_n and_o for_o his_o own_o mercy_n to_o this_o likewise_o serve_v for_o the_o comfort_n of_o god_n child_n that_o have_v many_o child_n and_o little_a wealth_n little_a good_n to_o leave_v they_o but_o that_o be_v not_o the_o question_n what_o good_n they_o have_v but_o if_o they_o be_v good_a and_o labour_n also_o to_o have_v their_o childen_a good_a if_o they_o be_v thousand_o of_o they_o they_o have_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o that_o shall_v maintain_v they_o well_o enough_o those_o that_o be_v bless_v of_o god_n shall_v not_o want_v for_o sign_n of_o his_o blessing_n sometime_o indeed_o the_o godly_a parent_n have_v wicked_a and_o ungodly_a child_n as_o jacob_n have_v but_o yet_o god_n will_v either_o cowert_v they_o as_o he_o do_v jacobs_n son_n so_o that_o those_o which_o at_o the_o first_o he_o see_v to_o be_v as_o profane_a as_o any_o he_o live_v to_o see_v convert_v &_o very_o holy_a man_n and_o pillar_n of_o the_o church_n or_o else_o if_o all_o be_v not_o good_a yet_o god_n give_v grace_n that_o some_o one_o of_o they_o at_o the_o least_o shall_v be_v holy_a as_o abraham_n have_v ungodly_a ishmael_n but_o yet_o he_o have_v godly_a isaac_n and_o isaac_n have_v profane_a esau_n but_o he_o have_v holy_a jacob_n to_o and_o david_n have_v wicked_a absalon_n &_o incestuous_a ammon_n but_o yet_o with_o all_o he_o have_v godly_a solomon_n &_o nathan_n or_o if_o none_o of_o the_o next_o offspring_n be_v good_a yet_o some_o of_o they_o that_o follow_v shall_v be_v holy_a the_o godliness_n of_o the_o parent_n will_v show_v itself_o in_o the_o bud_n soon_o or_o late_a as_o in_o hezekiah_n though_o manasseh_n that_o succeed_v he_o be_v at_o first_o a_o wicked_a idolater_n yet_o good_a josiah_n be_v in_o the_o next_o generation_n a_o good_a &_o holy_a man_n or_o if_o that_o good_a man_n at_o any_o time_n be_v barren_a yet_o his_o own_o soul_n and_o body_n shall_v feel_v the_o blessing_n those_o that_o love_v he_o and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n that_o be_v those_o which_o have_v such_o a_o true_a love_n to_o he_o as_o do_v show_v itself_o by_o the_o faithful_a use_v of_o his_o pure_a worship_n and_o by_o keep_v not_o the_o duty_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n but_o his_o commandment_n so_o that_o here_o god_n set_v down_o this_o as_o a_o note_n of_o love_v he_o to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n whence_o this_o lesson_n arise_v that_o the_o love_n of_o god_n consist_v in_o keep_v his_o commandment_n but_o afore_o the_o doctrine_n be_v further_o declare_v a_o objection_n must_v be_v remove_v for_o one_o may_v say_v what_o do_v you_o say_v that_o none_o love_v god_n but_o those_o that_o keep_v his_o commandment_n than_o i_o pray_v you_o where_o can_v you_o find_v one_o that_o love_v god_n and_o who_o be_v this_o that_o be_v able_a perfect_o to_o keep_v and_o fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o for_o the_o absolve_a of_o this_o doubt_n know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o to_o keep_v god_n commandment_n &_o to_o fulfil_v god_n commandment_n for_o keep_v note_v a_o truth_n fulfil_v a_o perfection_n this_o perfection_n christ_n only_o have_v but_o this_o truth_n every_o christian_n must_v have_v for_o every_o christian_n man_n may_v so_o far_o keep_v god_n law_n as_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v both_o accept_v and_o also_o reward_v though_o not_o for_o the_o merit_n
oppress_v he_o will_v not_o suffer_v that_o his_o sacred_a name_n shall_v be_v thus_o wicked_o abuse_v to_o be_v make_v a_o shelter_n for_o lie_n and_o slander_n but_o when_o the_o good_a time_n come_v he_o will_v let_v the_o world_n see_v how_o vild_o and_o shameful_o they_o deal_v and_o though_o now_o whilst_o god_n hold_v his_o peace_n they_o flatter_v themselves_o and_o care_v not_o a_o jot_n to_o profane_v his_o name_n so_o they_o may_v effect_v their_o malicious_a purpose_n and_o matter_n go_v on_o their_o side_n yet_o god_n will_v have_v a_o care_n that_o their_o wickedness_n shall_v return_v and_o fall_v upon_o their_o own_o head_n &_o their_o own_o shame_n shall_v cover_v their_o face_n and_o the_o wrong_n do_v both_o to_o his_o name_n and_o to_o his_o servant_n shall_v be_v full_o discover_v and_o avenge_v thus_o much_o concern_v the_o three_o commandment_n for_o the_o glorifieng_v of_o god_n name_n now_o follow_v the_o four_o in_o these_o word_n follow_v remember_v that_o thou_o keep_v holy_a the_o sabbath_n day_n six_o day_n shall_v thou_o labour_v &_o do_v all_o that_o thou_o have_v to_o do_v but_o the_o seven_o day_n be_v the_o sabbath_n of_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n in_o it_o thou_o shall_v do_v no_o manner_n of_o work_n thou_o and_o thy_o son_n and_o thy_o daughter_n thy_o man_n servant_n thy_o maid_n servant_n thy_o cattle_n and_o the_o strange_a all_o body_n lie_v work_n and_o to_o see_v that_o those_o which_o be_v under_o our_o government_n as_o child_n servant_n and_o all_o inferior_n do_v the_o like_a and_o that_o our_o beast_n be_v not_o put_v to_o any_o civil_a labour_n yea_o that_o the_o stranger_n when_o he_o come_v among_o we_o do_v not_o open_o profane_v the_o same_o though_o we_o can_v enforce_v he_o to_o come_v to_o the_o public_a exercise_n yet_o those_o that_o be_v in_o superiority_n must_v restrain_v he_o from_o public_a violate_v of_o it_o by_o open_a work_n and_o must_v lay_v the_o authority_n so_o far_o upon_o he_o as_o that_o they_o suffer_v he_o not_o among_o their_o people_n and_o in_o their_o jurisdiction_n in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o congregation_n open_o to_o break_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n the_o reason_n be_v diverse_a first_o draw_v from_o the_o equity_n and_o righteousness_n of_o it_o in_o these_o word_n six_o day_n shall_v thou_o labour_v q._n d._n i_o have_v give_v thou_o six_o the_o church_n treasury_n &_o thou_o shall_v be_v no_o better_o than_o a_o church_n robber_n if_o thou_o convert_v it_o to_o thy_o own_o use_n the_o three_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o god_n example_n in_o these_o word_n for_o in_o six_o day_n the_o lord_n make_v heaven_n &_o earth_n the_o sea_n and_o all_o that_o in_o they_o be_v and_o rest_v the_o seven_o day_n q._n d._n if_o thou_o will_v follow_v example_n and_o be_v lead_v by_o other_o then_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o the_o best_a now_o what_o better_a example_n can_v there_o be_v than_o the_o example_n of_o god_n himself_o now_o god_n himself_o when_o he_o go_v to_o make_v the_o world_n and_o all_o the_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n contrive_v all_o his_o work_n so_o as_o that_o he_o finish_v they_o within_o the_o compass_n of_o six_o day_n and_o on_o the_o seven_o day_n do_v rest_n from_o all_o his_o work_n of_o creation_n only_o preserve_v those_o thing_n which_o before_o he_o have_v make_v therefore_o from_o his_o example_n learn_v thou_o so_o to_o dispatch_v all_o thy_o business_n on_o the_o six_o day_n as_o that_o on_o the_o seven_o day_n cease_v from_o labour_n in_o thy_o call_n thou_o may_v whole_o give_v thyself_o to_o the_o duty_n of_o sanctification_n and_o to_o meditate_v on_o god_n power_n and_o greatness_n in_o his_o six_o day_n work_n for_o which_o end_n as_o one_o special_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v in_o it_o he_o have_v appoint_v this_o rest_v of_o the_o seven_o day_n the_o last_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o the_o end_n of_o the_o sabbath_n in_o these_o word_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n bless_v the_o sabbath_n day_n and_o hallow_v it_o q._n d._n if_o neither_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o commandment_n nor_o the_o authority_n and_o right_n of_o god_n nor_o yet_o his_o example_n will_v prevail_v with_o thou_o to_o persuade_v thy_o hart_n to_o keep_v this_o commandment_n yet_o in_o regard_n of_o thy_o own_o profit_n and_o the_o benefit_n thou_o shall_v reap_v to_o thyself_o yield_v it_o for_o holy_a use_n that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o blessing_n not_o upon_o the_o soul_n only_o but_o even_o upon_o the_o body_n and_o estate_n of_o those_o that_o observe_v it_o there_o be_v no_o ready_a way_n to_o bring_v god_n blessing_n upon_o any_o man_n then_o the_o sanctify_a of_o it_o nor_o no_o more_o present_a mean_n to_o pull_v down_o a_o curse_n than_o the_o neglect_v and_o break_v of_o it_o therefore_o if_o thou_o love_v thyself_o and_o will_v have_v prosperity_n on_o thy_o soul_n and_o body_n yield_v so_o much_o obedience_n to_o god_n as_o to_o sanctify_v his_o sabbath_n thus_o much_o concern_v the_o sum_n and_o exposition_n of_o this_o commandment_n now_o because_o there_o be_v many_o that_o do_v disagree_v in_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o account_v the_o keep_n holy_a of_o the_o seven_o day_n in_o the_o number_n of_o those_o ceremony_n which_o be_v abrogate_a by_o christ_n and_o reach_v only_o to_o the_o jew_n therefore_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o we_o approve_v and_o confirm_v by_o some_o sound_a reason_n out_o of_o god_n word_n that_o this_o commandment_n be_v moral_a and_o perpetual_a and_o as_o careful_o to_o be_v keep_v under_o the_o gosple_n as_o under_o the_o law_n and_o to_o continue_v in_o force_n so_o long_o as_o any_o of_o the_o commandment_n even_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v this_o world_n and_o a_o church_n militant_a upon_o earth_n the_o first_o reason_n to_o confirm_v this_o may_v be_v draw_v from_o those_o reason_n which_o god_n use_v for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o it_o in_o the_o text_n the_o reason_n be_v all_o of_o they_o perpetual_a and_o none_o of_o they_o ceremonial_a and_o every_o one_o as_o much_o belong_v unto_o we_o as_o unto_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v without_o reason_n to_o make_v the_o commandment_n itself_o of_o less_o scope_n and_o bind_v few_o to_o keep_v it_o than_o those_o reason_n which_o be_v bring_v to_o confirm_v it_o for_o go_v through_o the_o whole_a commandment_n what_o one_o word_n in_o all_o of_o it_o have_v any_o note_n of_o ceremony_n what_o reason_n savour_v of_o any_o
but_o we_o must_v serve_v he_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n and_o mercy_n only_o as_o for_o example_n god_n child_n will_v not_o eat_v meat_n at_o their_o own_o table_n without_o crave_v god_n blessing_n upon_o they_o but_o when_o they_o be_v to_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n they_o use_v a_o great_a and_o more_o solemn_a preparation_n because_o they_o expect_v a_o great_a and_o more_o excellent_a blessing_n so_o likewise_o a_o christian_n in_o all_o the_o work_n of_o his_o call_n have_v a_o regard_n to_o serve_v and_o glorify_v god_n but_o in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n upon_o the_o seven_o day_n because_o he_o than_o look_v for_o a_o more_o plentiful_a and_o liberal_a benediction_n both_o upon_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n and_o these_o man_n that_o among_o against_o it_o but_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o own_o weakness_n which_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n to_o lead_v they_o into_o the_o truth_n and_o to_o confirm_v and_o show_v they_o error_n and_o heresy_n and_o make_v they_o loathsome_a unto_o they_o and_o give_v they_o power_n against_o they_o therefore_o we_o must_v labour_v for_o this_o spirit_n of_o truth_n which_o may_v so_o to_o pray_v to_o god_n often_o and_o earnest_o to_o punish_v the_o heart_n and_o to_o sanctify_v it_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n then_o second_o to_o be_v faithful_a and_o diligent_a in_o some_o honest_a and_o lawful_a calling_n that_o may_v busy_v the_o heart_n upon_o some_o thing_n lawful_a and_o profitable_a for_o idleness_n be_v the_o mother_n of_o foul_a lust_n as_o a_o stand_a pool_n not_o have_v any_o course_n of_o run_v grow_v filthy_a of_o itself_o and_o full_a of_o toad_n and_o neut_n and_o filthy_a vermin_n so_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v not_o take_v up_o in_o some_o good_a and_o honest_a call_n be_v a_o fit_a place_n for_o the_o devil_n to_o breed_v and_o engender_v all_o monstrous_a and_o filthy_a lust_n idleness_n procure_v lust_n nothing_o more_o as_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o sodomite_n grow_v so_o filthy_a &_o unclean_a that_o no_o people_n ever_o be_v so_o filthy_a and_o beastly_a but_o because_o have_v the_o most_o fruitful_a and_o abundant_a
