which_o can_v be_v offer_v unto_o they_o but_o with_o injury_n and_o violation_n but_o man_n law_n come_v from_o their_o own_o wit_n be_v imperfect_a and_o so_o in_o all_o case_n they_o do_v not_o so_o great_a be_v his_o mercy_n and_o so_o large_a be_v his_o moderation_n that_o even_o his_o enemy_n taste_v of_o it_o every_o day_n and_o hour_n thus_o much_o of_o god_n equity_n and_o moderation_n to_o all_o man_n now_o second_o this_o moderate_a &_o mild_a deal_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o special_a to_o his_o church_n and_o child_n and_o that_o also_o show_v it_o self_n in_o two_o action_n even_o as_o a_o father_n spare_v his_o own_o son_n that_o serve_v he_o now_o we_o know_v there_o be_v no_o spare_v nor_o forbearance_n like_a unto_o that_o a_o father_n bid_v his_o little_a son_n do_v this_o or_o that_o which_o be_v far_o above_o his_o strength_n the_o child_n not_o consider_v the_o difficulty_n but_o look_v only_o at_o his_o duty_n and_o desire_v not_o only_a to_o please_v his_o father_n go_v about_o it_o and_o do_v his_o best_a and_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v he_o can_v do_v nothing_o to_o it_o at_o all_o now_o the_o father_n rejoice_v in_o this_o willing_a obedience_n the_o comfort_n of_o a_o man_n life_n in_o this_o world_n let_v we_o enter_v into_o more_o particular_a consideration_n thereof_o private_a equity_n have_v four_o degree_n or_o principal_a duty_n first_o to_o bear_v with_o natural_a infirmity_n second_o to_o interpret_v doubtful_a thing_n in_o the_o better_a part_n three_o to_o depart_v from_o our_o own_o right_a sometime_o four_o to_o forgive_v private_a and_o personal_a wrong_n of_o all_o these_o brief_o and_o in_o order_n the_o first_o duty_n of_o private_a equity_n be_v to_o bear_v with_o the_o defect_n and_o infirmity_n of_o man_n nature_n with_o who_o we_o live_v as_o long_o as_o they_o break_v not_o out_o into_o any_o great_a inconvenience_n or_o enormity_n these_o infirmity_n be_v manifold_a as_o for_o example_n forwardness_n or_o morosity_n of_o nature_n bastine_n slowness_n of_o conceit_n dulness_n of_o wit_n suspitiousnes_n desire_v of_o praise_n and_o such_o like_a these_o and_o many_o other_o natural_a infirmity_n must_v a_o christian_a man_n bear_v and_o tolerate_v patient_o in_o those_o with_o who_o he_o converse_v as_o with_o his_o wife_n his_o child_n his_o servant_n his_o friend_n his_o neighbour_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o long_o must_v he_o bear_v with_o they_o as_o they_o be_v keep_v within_o a_o mean_a and_o break_v not_o out_o into_o extremity_n of_o these_o the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v prou._n 19_o 31._o it_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o man_n to_o pass_v by_o a_o infirmity_n that_o be_v if_o he_o see_v in_o his_o brother_n weakness_n of_o nature_n which_o do_v not_o arise_v from_o settle_a malice_n or_o canker_a corruption_n it_o be_v a_o man_n glory_n and_o praise_n always_o so_o far_o to_o moderate_v himself_o as_o not_o to_o see_v they_o nor_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o at_o least_o not_o to_o be_v move_v nor_o disquiet_v at_o they_o and_o oftentimes_o so_o little_a to_o regard_v they_o as_o though_o they_o be_v not_o do_v to_o this_o end_n say_v the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 13._o love_n suffer_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v all_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v bear_v with_o good_a conscience_n &_o be_v do_v by_o they_o who_o we_o love_v now_o any_o thing_n may_v be_v bear_v with_o good_a conscience_n which_o be_v either_o so_o private_a or_o so_o small_a that_o the_o wrong_n be_v only_o we_o and_o no_o dishonour_n thereby_o ensue_v to_o god_n glory_n nor_o ill_a example_n to_o the_o church_n all_o such_o thing_n love_n suffer_v and_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o true_a love_n to_o pass_v by_o many_o want_n and_o the_o more_o that_o a_o christian_n be_v root_v in_o true_a love_n the_o more_o infirmity_n will_v he_o pass_v by_o in_o they_o who_o he_o love_v he_o set_v no_o limit_n to_o himself_o how_o many_o or_o how_o long_o to_o bear_v but_o even_o all_o that_o be_v infirmity_n of_o nature_n many_o hard_a word_n many_o angry_a fit_n many_o needle_n surmise_n many_o unkindness_n will_v he_o put_v up_o and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o see_v they_o who_o heart_n be_v possess_v with_o true_a love_n wisdom_n and_o the_o scare_v of_o god_n and_o thus_o must_v every_o one_o do_v that_o will_v practice_v christian_a equity_n for_o this_o be_v a_o man_n glory_n and_o commendation_n let_v we_o lay_v this_o doctrine_n near_o to_o our_o conscience_n by_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o virtue_n in_o some_o few_o example_n a_o man_n have_v a_o wife_n or_o a_o woman_n a_o husband_n in_o who_o there_o be_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o honest_a and_o faithful_a love_n but_o he_o or_o she_o be_v subject_a to_o anger_n or_o to_o hastiness_n or_o to_o a_o austerity_n in_o their_o behaviour_n or_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v not_o in_o their_o nature_n to_o practice_v those_o outward_a compliment_n of_o kindness_n which_o other_o can_v do_v with_o great_a facility_n these_o and_o such_o like_a be_v but_o weakness_n of_o nature_n in_o they_o that_o fear_n god_n therefore_o must_v love_n cover_v they_o and_o bear_v they_o and_o oftentimes_o not_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o the_o rather_o because_o he_o or_o she_o that_o have_v not_o such_o have_v either_o the_o like_a or_o great_a weakness_n all_o which_o if_o one_o forbear_v not_o in_o another_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o live_v in_o peace_n and_o comfort_n but_o if_o this_o part_n of_o equity_n be_v practise_v it_o be_v scarce_o credible_a how_o much_o it_o will_v augment_v the_o happiness_n and_o add_v to_o the_o comfort_n of_o they_o that_o be_v marry_v again_o a_o man_n have_v a_o servant_n careful_a and_o willing_a enough_o to_o obey_v and_o please_v his_o master_n also_o trusty_a and_o faithful_a but_o he_o be_v slow_a in_o his_o business_n and_o do_v not_o dispatch_v thing_n appoint_v he_o to_o the_o mind_n of_o his_o master_n not_o so_o speedy_o not_o so_o ready_o nor_o with_o
that_o facility_n as_o his_o master_n require_v what_o be_v to_o to_o be_v do_v in_o this_o case_n to_o see_v it_o and_o always_o to_o check_v he_o for_o it_o and_o to_o gall_n and_o gird_v he_o with_o it_o and_o ever_o to_o be_v cast_v it_o in_o his_o tooth_n and_o threaten_v he_o for_o it_o be_v the_o extremity_n which_o here_o the_o apostle_n condemn_v the_o equity_n then_o in_o this_o case_n to_o be_v perform_v be_v in_o consideration_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o fault_n of_o malice_n but_o of_o nature_n not_o of_o idleness_n nor_o carelessness_n but_o of_o a_o natural_a weakness_n the_o master_n must_v gentle_o tell_v he_o of_o it_o and_o private_o and_o seldom_o and_o advise_v he_o what_o be_v the_o best_a help_n for_o nature_n in_o this_o case_n and_o though_o he_o see_v occasion_n to_o confer_v often_o with_o another_o man_n by_o reason_n that_o they_o be_v neighbour_n or_o special_a friend_n or_o of_o the_o same_o call_n and_o course_n of_o life_n but_o one_o of_o they_o be_v hasty_a and_o soon_o angry_a and_o it_o may_v be_v in_o his_o talk_n either_o for_o the_o matter_n or_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o he_o can_v but_o show_v his_o anger_n extremity_n in_o this_o case_n be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o deal_v rough_o with_o he_o to_o contradict_v and_o cross_v he_o to_o deny_v what_o he_o say_v to_o stand_v stiff_o to_o our_o our_o own_o opinion_n &_o to_o be_v angry_a again_o with_o he_o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n christian_a equity_n teach_v a_o man_n not_o to_o see_v it_o nor_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o nor_o to_o be_v angry_a again_o nor_o to_o without_o betray_v of_o the_o truth_n and_o by_o the_o way_n in_o conference_n hold_v it_o always_o for_o a_o rule_n of_o christian_a wisdom_n and_o private_a equity_n never_o to_o stick_v stiff_o to_o any_o opinion_n unless_o it_o be_v in_o a_o plain_a truth_n and_o of_o great_a moment_n now_o thus_o do_v to_o our_o brother_n and_o spare_v his_o weakness_n and_o continue_v on_o our_o speech_n as_o though_o we_o see_v not_o that_o he_o be_v angry_a hereby_o the_o conference_n hold_v on_o and_o love_n be_v continue_v as_o afore_o but_o if_o contrariwise_o we_o take_v the_o advantage_n of_o his_o infirmity_n and_o display_v it_o and_o rub_v he_o for_o it_o if_o we_o be_v as_o short_a as_o he_o and_o stand_v stiff_o upon_o point_n than_o the_o conference_n be_v break_v off_o without_o edification_n and_o heart-burn_n rise_v betwixt_o they_o in_o stead_n of_o true_a love_n thus_o we_o see_v in_o these_o example_n how_o in_o a_o christian_a moderation_n we_o be_v to_o bear_v and_o to_o forbear_v the_o natural_a weakness_n of_o our_o brethren_n if_o we_o purpose_v to_o live_v in_o any_o comfort_n with_o they_o in_o this_o world_n yet_o this_o forbearance_n must_v be_v with_o two_o condition_n first_o that_o these_o want_n be_v want_n of_o nature_n not_o of_o malice_n nor_o of_o old_a root_v settle_a and_o canker_a corruption_n second_o if_o they_o who_o we_o forbear_v contain_v themselves_o within_o convenient_a bond_n and_o do_v not_o exceed_v nor_o break_v out_o into_o any_o outrage_n or_o extremity_n for_o than_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v forbear_v but_o to_o it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o wisdom_n and_o good_a government_n and_o a_o sign_n that_o a_o man_n be_v a_o lover_n of_o peace_n and_o consequent_o of_o religion_n and_o of_o god_n himself_o to_o pass_v by_o they_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o duty_n maintain_v peace_n in_o kingdom_n country_n state_n city_n college_n family_n and_o all_o society_n of_o man_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o first_o duty_n the_o second_o duty_n of_o private_a equity_n be_v to_o constru_fw-la &_o interpret_v man_n saying_n that_o be_v doubtful_a in_o the_o better_a part_n if_o possible_o it_o may_v be_v this_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o all_o man_n though_o they_o be_v our_o enemy_n and_o this_o must_v a_o man_n do_v if_o he_o will_v live_v in_o peace_n in_o this_o world_n our_o nature_n be_v give_v to_o take_v man_n at_o the_o worst_a to_o deprave_v man_n deed_n and_o word_n &_o to_o pervert_v they_o to_o the_o worst_a sense_n that_o may_v be_v and_o this_o be_v common_o the_o cause_n of_o debate_n and_o dissension_n in_o the_o world_n but_o the_o duty_n of_o christian_a equity_n be_v contrary_a hereunto_o namely_o to_o think_v the_o best_a they_o can_v of_o all_o man_n to_o construe_v all_o doubtful_a action_n in_o the_o better_a part_n and_o to_o make_v the_o best_a sense_n of_o all_o doubtful_a speech_n if_o we_o have_v any_o probable_a reason_n to_o induce_v we_o to_o it_o the_o fall_v out_o amongst_o old_a friend_n and_o what_o separation_n even_o amongst_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v near_o be_v daily_o in_o the_o world_n by_o reason_n of_o this_o sinister_a interpretation_n of_o man_n word_n and_o deed_n we_o therefore_o that_o do_v profess_v ourselves_o the_o child_n of_o peace_n must_v learn_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o this_o the_o due_a practice_n whereof_o be_v action_n and_o of_o man_n fault_n worse_o than_o they_o be_v yea_o to_o speak_v worse_o even_o of_o ill_a man_n than_o they_o deserve_v but_o it_o be_v flat_a injustice_n not_o only_o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o that_o that_o be_v good_a but_o even_o to_o make_v a_o evil_a thing_n worse_o than_o it_o be_v many_o case_n there_o be_v wherein_o a_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o make_v the_o best_a he_o can_v of_o a_o bad_a action_n but_o to_o make_v it_o worse_o than_o it_o be_v there_o be_v no_o case_n wherein_o a_o man_n may_v do_v it_o without_o plain_a injury_n to_o his_o brother_n if_o any_o man_n reply_n and_o say_v i_o be_o not_o to_o spare_v myself_o nor_o excuse_v my_o own_o fault_n but_o to_o judge_v as_o hardly_o of_o my_o own_o say_n and_o do_n as_o they_o deserve_v why_o then_o shall_v i_o not_o also_o do_v so_o to_o another_o the_o answer_n be_v ready_a because_o a_o man_n know_v not_o another_o man_n so_o well_o as_o himself_o word_n and_o deed_n be_v know_v to_o other_o course_n in_o do_v or_o speak_v evil_a may_v be_v by_o no_o mean_n colour_v or_o excuse_v second_o we_o speak_v not_o of_o manifest_a &_o public_a enormity_n as_o of_o treason_n against_o the_o prince_n or_o state_n for_o therein_o it_o may_v be_v dangerous_a to_o the_o prince_n and_o hurtful_a to_o the_o state_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n colour_v conceal_a or_o excuse_v in_o such_o case_n we_o must_v set_v aside_o our_o duty_n to_o our_o brother_n and_o remember_v our_o duty_n to_o the_o head_n and_o whole_a body_n and_o better_o it_o be_v that_o one_o member_n be_v cut_v off_o then_o that_o the_o whole_a body_n perish_v but_o we_o speak_v of_o private_a evil_a word_n or_o deed_n the_o evil_a and_o hurt_n whereof_o redound_v to_o private_a man_n and_o in_o they_o we_o speak_v not_o of_o manifest_a gross_a and_o palpable_a crime_n wherein_o not_o only_o the_o action_n be_v plain_o evil_a but_o the_o intent_n also_o for_o to_o excuse_v or_o conceal_v or_o to_o extenuate_v such_o be_v to_o make_v ourselves_o accessary_a to_o the_o evil_a of_o they_o but_o we_o speak_v of_o doubtful_a word_n or_o deed_n wherein_o either_o the_o action_n itself_o or_o at_o the_o least_o the_o intent_n of_o it_o may_v receive_v a_o likely_a excuse_n and_o a_o probable_a interpretation_n of_o good_a and_o unto_o these_o two_o caution_n add_v thus_o much_o further_o that_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o duty_n for_o the_o most_o part_n cease_v when_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o work_v upon_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o impenitent_a or_o a_o presumptuous_a sinner_n for_o than_o he_o be_v not_o to_o moderate_v or_o mitigate_v to_o colour_n or_o excuse_v to_o lessen_v or_o extenuate_v his_o sin_n but_o to_o speak_v of_o sin_n as_o it_o deserve_v and_o to_o lay_v out_o his_o sin_n in_o their_o own_o colour_n that_o so_o he_o may_v humble_v he_o and_o cast_v he_o down_o but_o out_o of_o these_o three_o case_n this_o duty_n lie_v upon_o all_o man_n at_o all_o time_n to_o interpret_v every_o thing_n in_o the_o better_a part_n so_o then_o the_o conclusion_n of_o this_o second_o duty_n be_v this_o action_n apparent_o good_a be_v to_o be_v commend_v doubtful_a be_v to_o be_v construe_v in_o the_o best_a sense_n apparent_o evil_a be_v to_o be_v make_v no_o worse_o than_o they_o be_v but_o rather_o to_o be_v excuse_v and_o let_v a_o man_n always_o rather_o speak_v too_o
