will_v of_o purpose_n which_o can_v but_o be_v effectual_a and_o if_o the_o lord_n willing_a of_o man_n at_o least_o such_o as_o be_v under_o his_o ordinance_n to_o be_v save_v be_v thus_o understand_v as_o include_v only_o the_o duty_n which_o god_n lay_v upon_o man_n and_o the_o connexion_n that_o he_o have_v make_v between_o it_o and_o salvation_n in_o his_o word_n it_o may_v be_v admit_v but_o if_o it_o be_v extend_v to_o any_o antecedent_n will_v in_o god_n himself_o distinct_a from_o that_o which_o be_v call_v his_o reveal_v will_n this_o place_n and_o such_o like_a will_v give_v no_o ground_n for_o such_o a_o assertion_n if_o it_o be_v ask_v then_o why_o do_v he_o give_v her_o space_n to_o repent_v if_o he_o intend_v not_o her_o salvation_n answ._n to_o forbear_v decide_v of_o what_o may_v be_v his_o purpose_n to_o this_o particular_a person_n who_o haply_o may_v be_v a_o elect_n because_o nothing_o be_v decide_v of_o her_o final_a condition_n in_o the_o word_n these_o reason_n may_v be_v give_v 1._o thereby_o the_o lord_n commend_v his_o grace_n that_o do_v so_o condescend_v to_o such_o a_o person_n 2._o the_o aggravation_n of_o her_o guilt_n and_o inexcusablnesse_n be_v the_o more_o clear_a as_o have_v be_v say_v and_o thereupon_o he_o have_v the_o more_o access_n to_o manifest_v the_o spotlessenesse_n of_o his_o justice_n as_o be_v in_o the_o church_n the_o last_o thing_n be_v the_o mitigation_n of_o this_o threaten_n vers_fw-la 24_o 25._o wherein_o we_o may_v consider_v these_o two_o first_o to_o who_o it_o be_v direct_v second_o what_o be_v the_o mitigation_n itself_o 1._o it_o be_v direct_v to_o you_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d to_o you_o in_o the_o plural_a number_n that_o be_v to_o the_o company_n of_o minister_n who_o be_v design_v by_o the_o title_n angel_n at_o the_o entry_n and_o to_o the_o rest_n in_o thyatira_n that_o be_v the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n contradistinguish_v from_o the_o minister_n it_o be_v add_v that_o have_v not_o this_o doctrine_n and_o have_v not_o know_v the_o depth_n of_o satan_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v to_o dinstinguish_v the_o church-member_n that_o be_v pure_a and_o clean_a from_o these_o that_o be_v corrupt_v with_o jezebel_n doctrine_n so_o there_o be_v three_o party_n imply_v here_o 1._o the_o minister_n 2._o the_o pure_a member_n to_o both_o these_o this_o consolation_n be_v direct_v 3._o there_o be_v some_o lead_v away_o with_o these_o corruption_n which_o be_v not_o include_v the_o pure_a member_n be_v qualify_v and_o distinguish_v by_o these_o two_o 1._o they_o have_v not_o this_o doctrine_n that_o be_v they_o own_v not_o nor_o maintain_v nor_o approve_v this_o corrupt_a doctrine_n 2._o they_o have_v not_o know_v the_o depth_n of_o satan_n that_o be_v they_o have_v not_o love_v nor_o approven_v the_o same_o nor_o in_o their_o practice_n experimental_o meddle_v therewith_o they_o that_o be_v corrupt_a teacher_n count_v such_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n depth_n and_o high_a mystery_n and_o attainment_n in_o religion_n therefore_o they_o give_v they_o this_o name_n of_o depth_n and_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v think_v that_o they_o call_v they_o depth_n of_o satan_n but_o the_o lord_n add_v this_o to_o show_v indeed_o what_o kind_n of_o depth_n they_o be_v they_o be_v say_v he_o depth_n indeed_o as_o they_o speak_v but_o they_o be_v the_o devil_n depth_n or_o depth_n of_o satan_n which_o expression_n hold_v out_o these_o two_o 1._o the_o great_a subtlety_n of_o the_o adversary_n of_o man_n salvation_n the_o devil_n he_o have_v depth_n in_o his_o way_n all_o his_o design_n be_v not_o obvious_a he_o can_v vail_v and_o cover_v thing_n and_o make_v they_o appear_v far_o otherways_o than_o they_o be_v and_o he_o exercise_v his_o subtlety_n most_o especial_o and_o deep_o in_o the_o carry_v on_o
3._o that_o he_o approve_v their_o not_o separate_v in_o his_o approve_v the_o general_a strain_n of_o their_o carriage_n which_o can_v not_o otherways_o be_v approven_v this_o be_v so_o obvious_a to_o view_v if_o it_o have_v be_v a_o fault_n or_o if_o they_o have_v by_o it_o partake_v with_o they_o in_o their_o sin_n 4._o that_o our_o lord_n warrand_v they_o to_o continue_v so_o and_o lay_v no_o burden_n of_o separate_n from_o they_o on_o these_o who_o be_v honest_a only_o say_v he_o hold_v fast_o that_o which_o you_o have_v already_o till_o i_o come_v that_o be_v keep_v yourselves_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n give_v unto_o you_o and_o according_a to_o your_o present_a practice_n hence_o may_v be_v argue_v 1._o if_o where_o church-member_n be_v pollute_v and_o suffer_v notwithstanding_o by_o church-officer_n to_o remain_v in_o church-communion_n christ_n do_v not_o only_o not_o condemn_v the_o clean_a for_o keep_v fellowship_n with_o they_o but_o express_o require_v they_o to_o continue_v as_o they_o do_v then_o he_o allow_v not_o separation_n on_o that_o account_n but_o the_o first_o be_v truth_n he_o condemn_v they_o not_o but_o require_v they_o to_o hold_v fast_o till_o he_o come_v ergâ—_fw-la etc._n etc._n 2._o if_o christ_n lie_v upon_o member_n no_o other_o burden_n but_o to_o keep_v themselves_o from_o personal_a pollution_n then_o he_o lay_v not_o on_o they_o separation_n and_o it_o must_v be_v a_o burden_n not_o of_o his_o lay_v on_o but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a hold_v fâ—st_n that_o which_o you_o have_v already_o ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n 3._o if_o separation_n thwart_v with_o christ_n direction_n to_o a_o church_n in_o that_o condition_n then_o it_o be_v not_o a_o duty_n but_o if_o the_o honest_a member_n in_o thyatira_n have_v separate_v they_o have_v not_o hold_v fast_o what_o they_o have_v already_o but_o will_v have_v gripe_v to_o some_o new_a thing_n and_o so_o have_v thwart_v with_o the_o direction_n lay_v on_o they_o ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n 4._o if_o this_o direction_n contain_v all_o their_o duty_n in_o reference_n to_o that_o defection_n or_o these_o pollute_a member_n then_o separation_n be_v not_o a_o duty_n in_o such_o a_o case_n for_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o it_o but_o this_o contain_v all_o 1._o otherways_o it_o will_v not_o befit_v their_o case_n which_o to_o do_v be_v christ_n scope_n 2._o it_o be_v not_o only_o negative_a not_o condemn_v they_o for_o not_o separate_v nor_o only_a positive_a give_v they_o other_o direction_n inconsistent_a with_o it_o but_o it_o be_v exclusive_a i_o lay_v on_o you_o no_o other_o burden_n this_o and_o no_o other_o and_o though_o other_o particular_a duty_n may_v be_v allege_v to_o be_v comprehend_v under_o this_o general_a yet_o separation_n can_v be_v comprehend_v because_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o it_o as_o appear_z for_o if_o the_o thing_n that_o christ_n call_v for_o from_o these_o who_o be_v honest_a in_o thyatira_n be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o be_v consistent_a with_o their_o former_a practice_n of_o keep_v church-fellowship_n with_o such_o then_o separation_n must_v be_v inconsistent_a with_o it_o but_o the_o former_a be_v truth_n and_o appear_v thus_o if_o christ_n direction_n to_o they_o be_v to_o hold_v as_o they_o be_v and_o not_o to_o alter_v then_o certain_o it_o be_v consistent_a with_o their_o own_o former_a practice_n but_o the_o word_n be_v plain_a i_o lay_v on_o you_o to_o wit_n that_o be_v clean_a no_o other_o burden_n but_o abstain_v from_o their_o way_n and_o hold_v fast_o and_o certain_o it_o will_v look_v very_o strange_a to_o say_v that_o separation_n from_o they_o be_v command_v under_o that_o word_n hold_v fast_o etc._n etc._n and_o that_o so_o hold_v fast_o be_v to_o be_v expound_v separate_v from_o that_o society_n and_o yet_o that_o must_v be_v comprehend_v under_o this_o or_o it_o be_v not_o a_o duty_n for_o such_o a_o case_n beside_o this_o duty_n which_o christ_n commend_v to_o they_o be_v a_o duty_n which_o every_o one_o of_o they_o ought_v personal_o to_o go_v about_o though_o other_o do_v not_o and_o if_o separation_n be_v include_v here_o according_a to_o that_o ground_n it_o will_v infer_v many_o absurdity_n as_o first_o suppose_v the_o minister_n to_o continue_v defective_a in_o his_o duty_n be_v all_o the_o pure_a member_n to_o separate_v from_o he_o or_o second_o suppose_v none_o but_o two_o or_o three_o do_v lay_v that_o duty_n to_o heart_n be_v these_o two_o or_o three_o to_o separate_v from_o all_o fellowship_n with_o the_o rest_n and_o quit_v all_o public_a ordinance_n yet_o no_o question_n in_o such_o a_o case_n they_o be_v to_o hold_v fast_o what_o they_o have_v already_o three_o suppose_v the_o pure_a member_n to_o continue_v in_o fellowship_n with_o their_o officer_n that_o be_v thus_o defective_a as_o former_o they_o have_v do_v yet_o keep_v themselves_o clean_a in_o their_o own_o station_n can_v it_o be_v think_v that_o they_o disobey_v this_o direction_n of_o christ_n that_o which_o thou_o have_v already_o hold_v fast_o till_o i_o come_v or_o be_v it_o not_o rather_o to_o be_v think_v that_o they_o do_v more_o near_o conform_v to_o christ_n direction_n by_o so_o do_v than_o if_o they_o have_v withdraw_v and_o separate_v we_o may_v also_o argue_v against_o separation_n in_o such_o a_o case_n â—rom_o this_o scripture_n thus_o if_o separation_n be_v a_o other_o burden_n to_o christ_n church_n than_o what_o he_o lay_v upon_o thyatira_n pergamos_n etc._n etc._n in_o such_o a_o case_n when_o their_o officer_n be_v defective_a in_o execute_v discipline_n than_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v allow_v in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n afterward_o in_o such_o like_a case_n but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a therefore_o etc._n etc._n if_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v clear_a this_o argument_n will_v be_v clear_a 1._o that_o though_o these_o church_n be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n yet_o there_o be_v not_o separation_n from_o the_o ordinance_n in_o practice_n or_o exercise_v among_o they_o upon_o that_o account_n this_o we_o suppose_v be_v clear_a from_o what_o be_v say_v 2._o if_o this_o also_o be_v clear_a that_o the_o press_v of_o separation_n upon_o such_o a_o ground_n will_v prove_v a_o burden_n unto_o the_o people_n of_o god_n then_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o christ_n do_v not_o lay_v it_o on_o upon_o these_o church_n see_v he_o express_o signify_v that_o he_o intend_v to_o lay_v no_o other_o burden_n upon_o they_o but_o to_o hold_v fast_o what_o they_o have_v already_o it_o must_v therefore_o be_v a_o untender_a thing_n to_o burden_n honest_a soul_n with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o be_v pollute_v from_o the_o personal_a fault_n of_o joynt-worshipper_n or_o communicant_n for_o first_o this_o put_v they_o to_o try_v all_o that_o they_o so_o keep_v fellowship_n with_o and_o they_o can_v have_v peace_n except_o they_o have_v some_o confidence_n that_o other_o by_o their_o joint_n communicate_v do_v not_o pollute_v the_o ordinance_n and_o this_o confidence_n can_v be_v till_o sufficient_a trial_n be_v make_v thereof_o and_o yet_o believer_n find_v it_o sufficient_o difficult_a to_o try_v themselves_o 2._o it_o put_v they_o to_o a_o utter_a uncertainty_n in_o respect_n of_o any_o comfortable_a fruit_n of_o ordinance_n because_o so_o it_o hang_v not_o only_o upon_o their_o own_o frame_n and_o good_a condition_n but_o also_o upon_o the_o good_a frame_n and_o disposition_n of_o these_o that_o communicate_v joint_o with_o they_o and_o so_o suppose_v that_o a_o believer_n may_v be_v out_o of_o the_o present_a exercise_n of_o grace_n and_o a_o joint_n communicater_v with_o they_o in_o that_o case_n the_o ordinance_n be_v pollute_v unto_o they_o because_o they_o be_v pollute_v even_o to_o that_o believer_n that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o can_v any_o have_v confidence_n that_o no_o natural_a person_n or_o indispose_a believer_n have_v communicate_v with_o they_o neither_o will_v it_o remove_v this_o difficulty_n to_o say_v that_o man_n may_v have_v peace_n if_o the_o offence_n or_o indisposition_n of_o other_o be_v not_o know_v unto_o they_o for_o 1._o what_o if_o it_o be_v say_v if_o trial_n have_v be_v make_v they_o may_v have_v be_v know_v 2._o suppose_v it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o know_v they_o yet_o if_o the_o communicate_v of_o corrupt_a man_n do_v not_o only_o pollute_v the_o ordinance_n to_o themselves_o but_o also_o pollute_v it_o in_o itself_o that_o be_v make_v it_o want_v the_o nature_n of_o such_o a_o ordinance_n as_o to_o other_o then_o whether_o it_o be_v know_v or_o not_o the_o ordinance_n be_v no_o ordinance_n because_o of_o its_o be_v pollute_v in_o something_o essential_a to_o the_o be_v thereof_o otherwise_o the_o same_o ordinance_n may_v be_v a_o ordinance_n to_o one_o who_o know_v not_o of_o such_o scandal_n and_o noâ—_n be_v a_o ordinance_n of_o christ_n to_o
with_o the_o selfishnesse_n carnalnesse_n vanity_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v in_o he_o it_o be_v too_o like_o these_o have_v too_o much_o sway_n with_o they_o now_o to_o the_o second_o to_o wit_n what_o a_o minister_n ought_v to_o do_v in_o such_o a_o case_n for_o recover_v of_o himself_o answ._n the_o read_n of_o this_o epistle_n serious_o will_v indeed_o satisfy_v this_o which_o we_o may_v draw_v out_o in_o these_o direction_n 1._o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o a_o minister_n observe_v his_o own_o condition_n and_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o sinfulness_n and_o hazard_n thereof_o this_o be_v imply_v in_o the_o word_n remember_v vers_fw-la 3._o and_o indeed_o who_o come_v to_o ponder_v and_o consider_v right_o their_o own_o condition_n be_v in_o a_o fair_a way_n of_o recovery_n 2._o there_o will_v be_v a_o put_n of_o every_o thing_n right_o that_o belong_v to_o a_o christian_a oftentimes_o decay_v in_o christianity_n bring_v on_o this_o deadness_n in_o the_o minister_n and_o therefore_o there_o can_v be_v no_o better_o mean_v of_o recovery_n than_o once_o to_o put_v the_o soul_n in_o a_o right_a posture_n in_o this_o respect_n 3._o it_o will_v further_a this_o much_o that_o he_o begin_v with_o the_o serious_a exercise_n of_o repentance_n of_o what_o be_v past_a and_o that_o as_o to_o the_o defect_n that_o cleave_v to_o he_o both_o as_o a_o christian_a and_o as_o a_o minister_n this_o make_v the_o beginning_n of_o a_o recovery_n to_o be_v solid_a therefore_o it_o be_v command_v vers_fw-la 3._o 4._o there_o will_v be_v special_a care_n have_v in_o the_o do_n of_o ministerial_a duty_n that_o not_o only_o they_o be_v do_v but_o that_o they_o be_v do_v in_o a_o right_a manner_n that_o so_o every_o thing_n be_v do_v as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n with_o a_o eye_n to_o this_o that_o it_o may_v be_v find_v perfect_a before_o he_o this_o be_v in_o the_o word_n be_v watchful_a and_o employ_v under_o this_o angel_n charge_n of_o not_o have_v his_o work_n perfect_a before_o god_n 5._o there_o will_v be_v zeal_n and_o carefulness_n in_o the_o beget_n and_o keep_v of_o life_n and_o liveliness_n among_o the_o people_n as_o in_o himself_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n a_o do_v of_o every_o thing_n with_o respect_n to_o that_o end_n this_o be_v the_o angel_n fault_n in_o his_o deadness_n to_o wit_n the_o neglect_v of_o this_o and_o it_o be_v command_v to_o he_o to_o strengthen_v what_o be_v ready_a to_o die_v as_o a_o thing_n befit_v his_o recovery_n this_o be_v in_o a_o condescend_v way_n to_o seek_v to_o feed_v the_o people_n with_o what_o be_v profitable_a though_o thereby_o a_o minister_n shall_v seem_v to_o some_o to_o lose_v of_o his_o name_n and_o reputation_n 6._o there_o be_v need_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v deny_v and_o to_o exercise_v faith_n in_o he_o that_o have_v the_o seven_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o seven_o star_n also_o without_o which_o there_o be_v no_o attain_n to_o liveliness_n and_o for_o this_o end_n do_v the_o lord_n so_o describe_v himself_o in_o the_o inscription_n of_o this_o epistle_n much_o dependence_n on_o he_o walk_v with_o he_o stand_v in_o his_o counsel_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o in_o the_o mean_a particular_a step_n of_o any_o ministerial_a duty_n as_o not_o dare_v to_o undertake_v any_o thing_n without_o he_o and_o so_o a_o acknowledge_v of_o he_o in_o his_o grace_n as_o to_o the_o fruit_n of_o every_o thing_n this_o be_v a_o very_a fountain_n of_o the_o life_n of_o a_o minister_n lecture_n ii_o vers._n 7._o and_o unto_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o church_n in_o philadelphia_n write_v these_o thing_n say_v he_o that_o be_v holy_a he_o that_o be_v true_a he_o that_o have_v the_o key_n of_o david_n he_o that_o open_v and_o no_o man_n shut_v and_o shut_v and_o
