sometime_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o thing_n signify_v only_o and_o then_o it_o be_v call_v the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v to_o we_o in_o and_o by_o christ_n sometime_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o whole_a viz._n both_o for_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v and_o the_o whole_a action_n thereabouts_o and_o than_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o testimony_n confirm_v by_o a_o external_a sign_n the_o wholesome_a promise_n of_o god_n to_o believer_n and_o as_o it_o be_v engrave_v they_o in_o their_o mind_n all_o which_o be_v compendious_o deliver_v to_o we_o in_o our_o church-catechism_n in_o answer_n to_o that_o question_n what_o mean_v thou_o by_o this_o word_n sacrament_n the_o answer_n whereunto_o be_v this_o i_o mean_v a_o outward_a and_o visible_a sign_n of_o a_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a grace_n give_v unto_o we_o ordain_v by_o christ_n himself_o as_o a_o mean_n whereby_o we_o receive_v the_o same_o and_o a_o pledge_n to_o assure_v we_o thereof_o from_o evangelist_n when_o they_o relate_v the_o history_n of_o the_o institution_n of_o this_o sacrament_n be_v so_o careful_a to_o mention_v the_o author_n and_o instituter_n of_o it_o and_o st._n paul_n persuade_v the_o church_n of_o corinth_n to_o a_o due_a and_o orderly_a celebration_n of_o this_o sacrament_n be_v careful_a to_o acquaint_v they_o that_o what_o he_o deliver_v unto_o they_o he_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o lord_n 1_o cor._n 11.23_o 2._o it_o must_v have_v some_o visible_a sign_n for_o sacrament_n be_v therefore_o use_v that_o by_o visible_a sign_n we_o may_v know_v and_o comprehend_v heavenly_a and_o invisible_a thing_n and_o therefore_o our_o church_n in_o her_o definition_n of_o a_o sacrament_n call_v it_o a_o outward_a and_o visible_a sign_n of_o a_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a grace_n 3._o it_o must_v have_v a_o divine_a promise_n add_v to_o the_o sign_n that_o so_o the_o thing_n signify_v may_v be_v unite_v therewith_o the_o promise_n must_v import_v spiritual_a grace_n here_o and_o eternal_a life_n hereafter_o which_o promise_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o sacrament_n for_o as_o man_n consist_v of_o body_n and_o soul_n so_o a_o sacrament_n consist_v of_o a_o sign_n and_o thing_n signify_v and_o this_o be_v the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a grace_n mention_v in_o the_o definition_n 4._o it_o must_v be_v give_v to_o the_o whole_a church_n as_o a_o perpetual_a sign_n viz._n as_o long_o as_o the_o outward_a form_n of_o the_o church_n institute_v by_o god_n shall_v continue_v for_o the_o law_n concern_v the_o form_n of_o outward_a worship_n be_v change_v the_o use_n of_o those_o sacrament_n which_o be_v institute_v during_o the_o continuance_n of_o that_o form_n be_v also_o change_v so_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v not_o now_o use_v in_o the_o new_a because_o the_o external_a form_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v now_o change_v so_o likewise_o anoint_v the_o gift_n of_o miracle_n etc._n etc._n and_o sign_n of_o his_o body_n break_v and_o blood_n shed_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o persist_v in_o that_o refusal_n and_o neglect_n can_v never_o hope_v to_o be_v own_v and_o reward_v by_o he_o as_o his_o friend_n parishioner_n i_o must_v needs_o own_o sir_n that_o you_o have_v very_o well_o acquit_v yourself_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o what_o you_o promise_v i_o be_o better_a instruct_v in_o the_o nature_n and_o notion_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n than_o i_o be_v before_o and_o be_o now_o very_a well_o satisfy_v that_o the_o celebration_n of_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n upon_o i_o and_o all_o christian_n by_o virtue_n of_o a_o divine_a command_n but_o sir_n i_o have_v still_o some_o scruple_n upon_o i_o which_o if_o i_o do_v not_o fear_v i_o have_v too_o much_o tire_v you_o already_o upon_o liberty_n and_o take_v away_o the_o indifferency_n of_o the_o thing_n it_o oblige_v to_o to_o be_v at_o liberty_n therefore_o either_o to_o do_v or_o not_o do_v a_o thing_n must_v suppose_v the_o thing_n not_o only_o to_o be_v indifferent_a in_o its_o nature_n but_o also_o to_o be_v free_a from_o any_o command_n or_o obligation_n and_o so_o consequent_o to_o be_v no_o duty_n at_o all_o but_o only_o a_o prudential_a act_n which_o a_o man_n may_v either_o do_v or_o leave_v undo_v as_o he_o in_o his_o discretion_n shall_v see_v cause_n 2._o it_o suppose_v the_o thing_n in_o question_n
