that_o the_o church_n have_v always_o wicked_a man_n among_o they_o there_o be_v always_o tare_n grow_v up_o with_o the_o wheat_n if_o you_o read_v even_o in_o the_o corinthian_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v some_o in_o that_o church_n that_o be_v wicked_a yea_o and_o it_o be_v think_v that_o judas_n himself_o do_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n too_o therefore_o what_o if_o wicked_a we_o do_v not_o do_v it_o as_o in_o all_o communion_n of_o saint_n there_o be_v a_o duty_n and_o there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o but_o may_v do_v something_o towards_o it_o thus_o far_o every_o communicant_a in_o every_o communion_n of_o saint_n must_v go_v if_o there_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n there_o if_o you_o come_v to_o know_v it_o and_o do_v not_o go_v thus_o far_o as_o i_o have_v speak_v you_o be_v defile_v by_o he_o you_o be_v not_o defile_v by_o the_o mere_a presence_n of_o wicked_a man_n for_o that_o be_v a_o mere_a deceit_n and_o gall_n that_o some_o will_v put_v upon_o not_o do_v their_o duty_n as_o they_o ought_v yet_o then_o to_o free_v their_o own_o soul_n as_o to_o profess_v here_o be_v one_o that_o be_v so_o and_o so_o guilty_a and_o may_v be_v prove_v thus_o and_o thus_o and_o so_o for_o my_o part_n i_o to_o free_v my_o own_o soul_n profess_v that_o this_o man_n or_o woman_n ought_v not_o to_o have_v communion_n here_o and_o thus_o you_o come_v to_o that_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o love_v the_o commission_n of_o sin_n you_o neglect_v god_n worship_n you_o be_v wont_a to_o worship_v he_o in_o a_o constant_a way_n in_o your_o closert_n and_o family_n but_o now_o you_o grow_v more_o loose_a and_o so_o you_o grow_v more_o dead_a every_o day_n than_o other_o you_o go_v off_o from_o god_n more_o and_o more_o sure_o there_o can_v be_v no_o good_a to_o neglect_v god_n worship_n and_o those_o that_o be_v loath_a to_o worship_n god_n because_o they_o can_v worship_v he_o as_o they_o ought_v from_o this_o point_n it_o appear_v plain_o that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o good_a get_v by_o neglect_v god_n worship_n for_o it_o be_v depart_v from_o god_n whatsoever_o plea_n there_o may_v be_v by_o any_o temptation_n to_o neglect_v god_n worship_n certain_o there_o be_v danger_n in_o it_o and_o therefore_o never_o listen_v to_o any_o such_o temptation_n as_o shall_v draw_v your_o heart_n from_o head_n all_o that_o i_o shall_v speak_v about_o the_o open_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n will_v be_v contain_v at_o this_o time_n i_o shall_v only_o speak_v to_o the_o first_o the_o due_a preparation_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n therein_o consist_v a_o special_a part_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o and_o that_o it_o be_v so_o we_o find_v it_o in_o scripture_n that_o preparation_n for_o worship_n it_o be_v call_v the_o sanctify_a of_o ourselves_o and_o by_o find_v this_o in_o scripture_n it_o hint_v i_o upon_o this_o head_n to_o speak_v of_o the_o preparation_n unto_o worship_n in_o our_o sanctify_a god_n name_v because_o i_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o sanctify_a ourselves_o for_o worship_n and_o the_o preparation_n of_o ourselves_o for_o worship_n be_v all_o one_o i_o will_v give_v you_o these_o two_o text_n in_o 1_o sam._n 16.5_o you_o shall_v find_v there_o that_o samuel_n when_o he_o be_v send_v by_o god_n to_o anoint_v david_n in_o bethlem_n the_o text_n say_v i_o be_o come_v to_o sacrifice_n unto_o the_o lord_n sanctify_v yourselves_o and_o come_v with_o i_o tâ—_n the_o sacrifice_n in_o chr._n 22.5.14_o david_n make_v preparation_n for_o the_o house_n of_o god_n because_o it_o be_v the_o house_n of_o god_n that_o he_o have_v to_o build_v though_o he_o can_v not_o do_v it_o profession_n a_o long_a time_n but_o yet_o have_v not_o have_v the_o weight_n of_o this_o duty_n upon_o your_o spirit_n now_o be_v careful_a for_o a_o while_n to_o prepare_v for_o every_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o god_n call_v you_o to_o and_o i_o say_v within_o a_o little_a time_n thou_o may_v bring_v thy_o heart_n into_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o thou_o may_v be_v ready_a at_o all_o time_n to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n because_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o that_o temper_n and_o frame_v that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o pray_v continual_o for_o indeed_o so_o it_o be_v to_o perform_v the_o answer_n to_o that_o be_v this_o we_o must_v distinguish_v of_o person_n there_o be_v some_o that_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o do_v keep_v their_o heart_n close_o with_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n now_o for_o they_o it_o may_v be_v suppose_v that_o through_o their_o exercise_n in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o keep_v of_o their_o heart_n constant_a with_o god_n in_o communion_n with_o he_o walk_v with_o god_n close_o that_o they_o be_v at_o all_o time_n prepare_v to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o fit_v to_o fulfil_v that_o command_n of_o the_o apostle_n pray_v continual_o that_o be_v in_o the_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v at_o any_o time_n there_o be_v no_o day_n in_o the_o week_n nor_o no_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o they_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o it_o can_v fall_v down_o to_o solemn_a prayer_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o excellent_a condition_n and_o a_o good_a evidence_n of_o the_o heart_n walk_v close_o with_o god_n that_o there_o be_v no_o time_n but_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v and_o fit_a for_o any_o ordinance_n yea_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n it_o be_v possible_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n so_o close_o to_o god_n as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o prayer_n and_o for_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o for_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n every_o day_n or_o any_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o this_o need_v a_o very_a close_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v this_o be_v very_o rare_a most_o man_n let_v out_o their_o heart_n so_o much_o to_o other_o thing_n as_o their_o conscience_n can_v but_o tell_v they_o that_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o prayer_n at_o such_o a_o time_n in_o the_o day_n they_o be_v altogether_o unfit_a for_o it_o if_o they_o be_v call_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n their_o conscience_n will_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o those_o that_o walk_v close_o with_o god_n though_o they_o be_v in_o
what_o gesture_n we_o shall_v use_v now_o that_o that_o have_v be_v the_o institution_n of_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o spiritual_a significancie_n in_o it_o be_v not_o indifferent_a for_o not_o only_o the_o eaâ—ing_v the_o bread_n and_o drink_v the_o wine_n be_v significative_a but_o the_o gesture_n whereby_o we_o have_v fellowship_n with_o jesus_n christ_n here_o to_o signify_v that_o fellowship_n we_o shall_v have_v with_o he_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n so_o that_o the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v deprive_v of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o comfort_n and_o of_o one_o special_a benefit_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n whereas_o they_o may_v not_o receive_v it_o sit_v when_o christ_n say_v that_o your_o sit_v with_o i_o here_o be_v a_o signification_n of_o your_o sit_v with_o i_o when_o i_o come_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n some_o say_v they_o must_v kneel_v because_o they_o may_v receive_v it_o with_o more_o reverence_n certain_o be_v it_o a_o thing_n as_o some_o say_v indifferent_a it_o be_v another_o matter_n but_o for_o to_o say_v it_o be_v not_o reverence_n to_o sit_v in_o that_o they_o accuse_v christ_n himself_o for_o want_n of_o reverence_n as_o if_o he_o will_v appoint_v a_o way_n or_o will_v have_v his_o disciple_n use_v any_o such_o way_n as_o be_v not_o reverend_a say_v christ_n i_o intend_v by_o your_o very_a gesture_n to_o have_v this_o signify_v that_o be_v suitable_a to_o a_o fellowship_n at_o table_n and_o communion_n to_o have_v the_o meat_n set_v before_o they_o be_v blessed_v and_o then_o for_o all_o to_o partake_v of_o it_o and_o beside_o this_o giving_z it_o into_o every_o one_o hand_n certain_o it_o come_v to_o we_o from_o a_o popish_a and_o superstitious_a conceit_n of_o the_o papist_n for_o the_o papist_n will_v give_v great_a deal_n of_o danger_n for_o to_o bring_v in_o man_n devise_n for_o to_o cause_v more_o reverence_n we_o be_v to_o look_v to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o christ_n he_o give_v it_o once_o and_o say_v drink_v you_o all_o of_o it_o in_o general_n to_o they_o all_o and_o so_o the_o minister_n shall_v do_v and_o beside_o there_o be_v this_o in_o it_o more_o and_o one_o will_v wonder_v that_o minister_n shall_v give_v it_o in_o particular_a and_o not_o in_o general_a to_o the_o church_n for_o by_o this_o mean_n minister_n may_v abundant_o ease_v themselves_o of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o charge_n and_o guilt_n for_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o will_v appear_v that_o a_o minister_n though_o as_o a_o eminent_a officer_n he_o be_v to_o look_v to_o his_o congregation_n that_o they_o be_v fit_a yet_o the_o truth_n be_v it_o concern_v the_o church_n as_o well_o to_o look_v who_o come_v there_o and_o likewise_o the_o minister_n i_o say_v to_o look_v about_o he_o that_o he_o do_v not_o say_v the_o body_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v give_v to_o thou_o when_o he_o know_v they_o be_v profane_a and_o wicked_a it_o concern_v the_o minister_n to_o look_v that_o he_o do_v not_o tell_v a_o lie_n but_o now_o when_o the_o minister_n give_v it_o general_o to_o the_o church_n take_v eat_v and_o take_v drink_v he_o give_v it_o particular_o to_o no_o body_n now_o than_o his_o charge_n be_v divide_v to_o the_o church_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o body_n that_o be_v unworthy_a let_v the_o church_n look_v to_o it_o as_o well_o as_o he_o though_o he_o as_o a_o eminent_a officer_n it_o be_v more_o especial_o in_o particular_a his_o duty_n then_o any_o other_o heretofore_o the_o charge_n will_v lie_v much_o upon_o the_o minister_n but_o the_o minister_n according_a to_o the_o institution_n shall_v give_v the_o sacrament_n to_o no_o particular_a but_o in_o general_a to_o the_o church_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v but_o any_o particular_a that_o the_o will_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n now_o as_o it_o belong_v to_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o worship_n so_o especial_o in_o prayer_n to_o know_v what_o we_o do_v when_o we_o pray_v not_o to_o think_v to_o put_v off_o god_n with_o a_o mere_a empty_a sound_n that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n the_o second_o thing_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o prayer_n it_o be_v the_o give_v up_o all_o the_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o it_o i_o speak_v to_o that_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o general_a we_o shall_v apply_v it_o now_o particular_o to_o prayer_n the_o give_v up_o not_o only_o our_o understanding_n but_o will_n thought_n affection_n strength_n in_o prayer_n in_o 2_o chron._n 20.3_o it_o be_v say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o he_o set_v himself_o to_o seek_v the_o lord_n he_o do_v give_v his_o whole_a self_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n we_o be_v to_o give_v our_o whole_a self_n and_o not_o to_o divide_v in_o prayer_n now_o there_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o indeed_o may_v well_o take_v up_o a_o whole_a sermon_n in_o show_v the_o evil_a of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o in_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o trouble_v with_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o thought_n both_o in_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o it_o be_v their_o great_a burden_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o i_o never_o hear_v any_o more_o complain_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o spirit_n than_o in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o pester_v in_o their_o spirit_n with_o this_o evil_a it_o be_v very_o grievous_a unto_o they_o and_o many_o of_o they_o go_v under_o it_o as_o a_o grievous_a burden_n all_o their_o day_n the_o chief_a burden_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o spirit_n be_v their_o wander_a in_o prayer_n so_o that_o if_o god_n shall_v speak_v to_o they_o as_o he_o speak_v unto_o solomon_n and_o bid_v he_o ask_v what_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o congregation_n that_o have_v already_o good_a assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n if_o they_o have_v not_o that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o they_o will_v ask_v but_o have_v attain_v that_o if_o god_n will_v speak_v from_o heaven_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o give_v you_o for_o yourselves_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v you_o in_o the_o general_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v ask_v something_o for_o the_o church_n but_o if_o it_o be_v for_o yourselves_o you_o will_v put_v up_o this_o petition_n oh_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o wander_a spirit_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n that_o i_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o enjoy_v more_o holy_a communion_n with_o thyself_o than_o ever_o yet_o i_o enjoy_v and_o they_o will_v account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n than_o if_o god_n shall_v give_v they_o to_o be_v king_n or_o queen_n over_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o god_n shall_v put_v these_o two_o into_o the_o balance_n either_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o possess_v or_o otherwise_o to_o have_v more_o free_a heart_n in_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o that_o have_v so_o much_o hinder_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n they_o will_v despise_v and_o scorn_v the_o the_o world_n in_o comparison_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v howsoever_o carnal_a heart_n they_o think_v little_a of_o it_o but_o those_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o they_o but_o be_v the_o time_n be_v past_a i_o shall_v reserve_v that_o to_o speak_v yet_o a_o little_a more_o large_o for_o the_o help_n of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o it_o i_o will_v only_o speak_v one_o thing_n further_o now_o and_o that_o shall_v be_v to_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o vile_a that_o not_o only_o have_v vain_a wander_a thought_n in_o prayer_n but_o even_o in_o the_o very_a duty_n of_o prayer_n many_o time_n have_v wicked_a and_o ungodly_a thought_n how_o horrible_a be_v they_o unclean_a thought_n murderous_a thought_n it_o may_v be_v and_o most_o abominable_a i_o confess_v even_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a may_v sometime_o have_v some_o blasphemous_a thought_n cast_v into_o they_o for_o the_o devil_n be_v never_o more_o busy_a than_o at_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n but_o they_o rather_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n than_o from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v we_o may_v make_v out_o more_o clear_o afterward_o but_o now_o i_o speak_v to_o such_o as_o have_v most_o wicked_a abominable_a thought_n rise_v from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n such_o thought_n as_o their_o heart_n do_v close_o withal_o in_o prayer_n and_o they_o can_v roll_n those_o thought_n about_o in_o their_o mind_n as_o a_o child_n will_v roll_n a_o piece_n of_o sugar_n in_o its_o mouth_n and_o this_o be_v the_o wickedness_n of_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n heart_n take_v but_o this_o one_o note_n with_o you_o that_o all_o those_o dreadful_a vile_a unclean_a covetous_a thought_n of_o thou_o in_o prayer_n they_o have_v be_v to_o god_n as_o if_o you_o have_v speak_v they_o in_o word_n thought_n to_o god_n be_v all_o one_o with_o he_o as_o word_n be_v to_o man_n for_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n do_v converse_v with_o god_n in_o thought_n as_o well_o as_o man_n do_v converse_v with_o man_n in_o word_n and_o what_o a_o woeful_a guiltiness_n will_v have_v be_v upon_o you_o have_v you_o speak_v such_o vile_a and_o wicked_a thing_n to_o man_n as_o sometime_o have_v be_v in_o your_o mind_n even_o when_o you_o have_v be_v pray_v to_o god_n how_o will_v the_o company_n have_v even_o spit_v in_o your_o face_n and_o kick_v you_o from_o they_o none_o that_o have_v any_o face_n of_o godliness_n will_v have_v endure_v you_o in_o their_o company_n and_o yet_o here_o be_v the_o evil_a of_o it_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o trouble_v but_o you_o rise_v off_o your_o knee_n and_o away_o you_o go_v thou_o have_v a_o cauterize_a conscience_n a_o fear_a conscience_n that_o can_v entertain_v such_o vile_a thought_n at_o any_o time_n without_o
