contrary_a to_o it_o whatever_o error_n and_o fail_n attend_v man_n holy_a thing_n yet_o general_o they_o keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n or_o guilt_n in_o do_v they_o seldom_o prevail_v upon_o they_o to_o that_o degree_n as_o to_o cause_v they_o whole_o to_o intermit_v and_o lay_v aside_o the_o care_n of_o they_o those_o man_n that_o be_v most_o conscious_a to_o themselves_o of_o their_o error_n in_o hear_v god_n word_n or_o in_o pray_v to_o he_o yet_o think_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o come_v to_o church_n and_o join_v in_o the_o public_a service_n of_o it_o esteem_v it_o much_o better_a to_o do_v something_o of_o their_o duty_n than_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o judge_v it_o a_o lesser_a guilt_n to_o err_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v their_o duty_n than_o whole_o to_o neglect_v all_o do_n of_o it_o i_o appeal_v to_o our_o common_a practice_n these_o be_v the_o measure_n that_o we_o act_n and_o judge_v by_o in_o all_o other_o instance_n we_o do_v not_o think_v we_o may_v safe_o neglect_v our_o duty_n because_o we_o fear_v we_o shall_v do_v it_o amiss_o nor_o do_v we_o think_v ourselves_o discharge_v from_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n upon_o a_o fear_n of_o sin_v and_o offend_v god_n in_o the_o do_n of_o they_o sect_n vi_o now_o from_o all_o these_o premise_n the_o conclusion_n methinks_v shall_v follow_v very_o plain_o viz._n that_o since_o this_o equal_a sense_n of_o danger_n and_o guilt_n in_o do_v other_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n amiss_o do_v not_o detain_v we_o from_o do_v of_o they_o that_o therefore_o it_o ought_v not_o to_o do_v it_o in_o this_o in_o the_o do_v other_o duty_n and_o service_n of_o religion_n man_n do_v so_o far_o surmount_v the_o fear_n and_o danger_n of_o sin_v in_o they_o as_o to_o keep_v up_o the_o regular_a and_o unconstant_a practice_n of_o they_o they_o do_v not_o suffer_v these_o fear_n so_o far_o to_o prevail_v upon_o they_o as_o to_o cause_v they_o whole_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o care_n of_o they_o but_o they_o judge_v it_o much_o better_a to_o do_v something_o of_o their_o duty_n than_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o a_o much_o less_o degree_n of_o guilt_n to_o do_v their_o duty_n though_o they_o fail_v in_o it_o and_o fall_v short_a of_o that_o exactness_n and_o care_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v with_o than_o to_o sit_v down_o in_o the_o total_a omission_n of_o it_o to_o live_v and_o die_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o as_o i_o fear_v a_o great_a many_o of_o man_n do_v in_o this_o now_o in_o these_o case_n man_n judge_v aright_o and_o have_v both_o the_o universal_a reason_n of_o mankind_n and_o their_o own_o mind_n to_o acquit_v they_o therein_o and_o certain_o they_o do_v choose_v the_o much_o safe_a side_n of_o the_o question_n i_o ask_v then_o why_o they_o shall_v not_o proceed_v by_o the_o same_o measure_n in_o our_o present_a case_n why_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o be_v so_o evident_a to_o we_o and_o so_o effectual_a upon_o we_o in_o all_o other_o case_n shall_v not_o be_v equal_o so_o in_o this_o i_o wish_v man_n will_v sober_o consider_v thing_n and_o judge_v righteous_a judgement_n and_o not_o make_v difference_n where_o there_o be_v real_o none_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o it_o be_v a_o ill_a sign_n when_o man_n be_v scrupulous_a only_o on_o one_o side_n and_o when_o that_o reason_n which_o prevail_v so_o easy_o upon_o they_o in_o one_o case_n shall_v not_o at_o all_o affect_v they_o in_o another_o in_o such_o a_o case_n it_o be_v plain_a man_n will_n and_o passion_n make_v the_o difference_n and_o not_o their_o judgement_n and_o to_o deal_v plain_o i_o be_o afraid_a it_o be_v just_a so_o in_o our_o present_a case_n man_n have_v no_o mind_n to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o therefore_o let_v every_o little_a shadow_n of_o a_o reason_n keep_v they_o from_o it_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o have_v any_o true_a argument_n against_o it_o but_o because_o they_o have_v no_o inclination_n to_o the_o thing_n itself_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o main_a reason_n why_o all_o our_o reason_n with_o man_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v so_o insuccessful_a they_o encounter_v prejudices_fw-la and_o contrary_a passion_n which_o too_o common_o be_v obstinate_a and_o blind_a and_o man_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o quit_v they_o no_o not_o when_o their_o reason_n be_v convince_v and_o all_o their_o exception_n and_o argument_n satisfy_v it_o be_v not_o in_o this_o case_n only_o that_o man_n believe_v with_o their_o will_n and_o affection_n more_o than_o with_o their_o judgement_n and_o choose_v or_o refuse_v thing_n not_o as_o they_o have_v true_a reason_n and_o argument_n for_o they_o but_o as_o they_o have_v inclination_n to_o or_o prejudices_fw-la against_o they_o the_o main_a fault_n of_o man_n being_n more_o careless_a to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n than_o to_o other_o ministry_n of_o religion_n lie_v in_o their_o will_n more_o than_o real_a judgement_n otherwise_o the_o same_o measure_n will_v be_v observe_v in_o both_o and_o the_o argument_n that_o prevail_v with_o they_o to_o act_v regular_o in_o one_o case_n
worthy_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v too_o notorious_a that_o this_o fear_n of_o damnation_n do_v not_o restrain_v they_o from_o they_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n but_o it_o be_v too_o true_a those_o very_a man_n that_o be_v so_o very_o scrupulous_a and_o so_o very_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n in_o this_o yet_o appear_v open_o regardless_o and_o proof_n against_o all_o fear_n of_o it_o in_o other_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v fear_v there_o be_v too_o many_o man_n on_o one_o hand_n that_o can_v live_v and_o persist_v obstinate_o in_o plain_a schism_n allow_v themselves_o in_o rebellion_n and_o the_o most_o factious_a course_n oppose_v government_n speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n pride_n and_o uncharitableness_n judge_v and_o rash_a censure_v of_o their_o brethren_n fraud_n and_o hypocrisy_n injustice_n and_o knavery_n and_o all_o sort_n of_o such_o spiritual_a vice_n as_o these_o without_o the_o least_o remorse_n and_o i_o will_v to_o god_n i_o can_v not_o say_v as_o true_o that_o there_o be_v too_o many_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n that_o will_v allow_v themselves_o in_o open_a debauchery_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o raillery_n and_o profaneness_n of_o intemperance_n and_o uncleanness_n of_o whoredom_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o that_o curse_a humour_n of_o swear_v which_o have_v obtain_v so_o among_o we_o to_o the_o shame_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o for_o which_o it_o mourn_v there_o be_v too_o many_o i_o say_v of_o both_o sort_n that_o live_v without_o any_o apprehension_n or_o fear_n of_o damnation_n in_o these_o thing_n who_o yet_o when_o invite_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o reprove_v for_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o seem_v wonderful_a scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n if_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o it_o and_o think_v to_o excuse_v the_o neglect_n of_o one_o with_o their_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o which_o they_o always_o plead_v in_o vindication_n of_o it_o now_o i_o do_v this_o for_o damnation_n be_v still_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o equal_o to_o be_v dread_v but_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o be_v plain_a you_o use_v it_o as_o subterfuge_n and_o artifice_v you_o proclaim_v your_o own_o insincerity_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o it_o and_o the_o excuse_n itself_o not_o only_o aggravate_v but_o become_v part_n of_o the_o crime_n i_o have_v add_v this_o consideration_n only_a ex_fw-la abundanti_fw-la and_o to_o argue_v with_o some_o man_n even_o upon_o their_o own_o pretence_n and_o if_o they_o will_v honest_o reflect_v upon_o it_o it_o will_v hardly_o fail_v of_o some_o effect_n on_o they_o but_o to_o other_o that_o be_v real_o scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n upon_o every_o failure_n to_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o argue_v their_o fear_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o text_n to_o these_o i_o say_v the_o former_a consideration_n will_v be_v sufficient_a since_o it_o be_v not_o this_o eternal_a damnation_n that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o let_v i_o add_v that_o if_o eternal_a damnation_n be_v not_o threaten_v to_o the_o corinthian_n here_o who_o so_o shameful_o and_o gross_o profane_v this_o holy_a service_n much_o less_o be_v it_o present_o to_o be_v fear_v by_o those_o who_o receive_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v though_o not_o so_o and_o drink_v unworthy_o there_o be_v the_o same_o yea_o there_o be_v great_a in_o not_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o this_o rely_v upon_o a_o reason_n that_o i_o have_v make_v good_a already_o and_o that_o be_v that_o eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a indispensible_a duty_n tie_v immediate_o upon_o all_o christian_n by_o the_o command_n of_o their_o lord_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o reason_n which_o will_v ever_o have_v effect_n upon_o all_o those_o that_o have_v any_o love_n and_o respect_n to_o he_o yea_o which_o will_v still_o improve_v and_o in_o every_o age_n grow_v strong_a and_o strong_a i_o shall_v not_o and_o i_o hope_v i_o need_v not_o resume_v this_o argument_n because_o i_o have_v though_o some_o present_a indisposition_n be_v upon_o he_o than_o so_o far_o to_o yield_v to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o neglect_v the_o other_o i_o be_o sure_a a_o necessary_a duty_n ought_v to_o be_v do_v and_o it_o be_v much_o better_a to_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o a_o man_n can_v then_o whole_o neglect_v it_o because_o he_o be_v at_o present_a unfit_a to_o do_v it_o so_o well_o as_o he_o shall_v now_o if_o man_n will_v consider_v this_o and_o remember_v that_o they_o never_o do_v well_o in_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o reason_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o innocent_a in_o it_o do_v they_o believe_v that_o every_o time_n they_o stay_v away_o from_o it_o they_o sin_n in_o do_v so_o it_o will_v perhaps_o give_v some_o check_n to_o that_o liberty_n which_o they_o common_o take_v in_o this_o case_n and_o that_o they_o ought_v thus_o to_o believe_v and_o thus_o to_o consider_v will_v appear_v plain_a upon_o these_o two_o reason_n which_o i_o but_o just_a name_n because_o i_o have_v consider_v they_o already_o first_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o it_o be_v a_o christian_n indispensible_a duty_n to_o partake_v of_o it_o when_o he_o may_v the_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n be_v on_o all_o hand_n grant_v necessary_a to_o the_o be_v of_o a_o christian_a church_n and_o the_o partake_n of_o they_o necessary_a to_o the_o be_v a_o true_a member_n of_o that_o church_n god_n have_v neither_o leave_v it_o to_o our_o liberty_n and_o choice_n whether_o we_o will_v receive_v it_o at_o all_o it_o their_o duty_n to_o go_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n every_o time_n the_o church_n administer_v it_o and_o that_o every_o accidental_a indisposition_n can_v no_o more_o excuse_v they_o from_o the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o for_o the_o neglect_v it_o at_o any_o time_n be_v neglect_v a_o duty_n and_o neglect_v a_o duty_n be_v a_o sin_n and_o whatever_o any_o present_a indisposition_n may_v the_o other_o that_o be_v prejudice_v against_o it_o but_o both_o side_n when_o press_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n have_v the_o same_o plea_n of_o their_o unworthiness_n ready_a to_o make_v and_o think_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o one_o sort_n of_o man_n plead_v it_o honest_o and_o upon_o real_a scruple_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v another_o sort_n plead_v it_o upon_o design_n and_o use_v it_o as_o a_o artificial_a excuse_n against_o that_o which_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n unto_o i_o shall_v not_o consider_v these_o sort_n of_o people_n distinct_o and_o separately_z but_o apply_v myself_o to_o the_o removal_n of_o this_o evil_a and_o argue_v the_o unreasonableness_n of_o it_o upon_o such_o consideration_n as_o may_v be_v proper_a for_o the_o cure_n
