right_o at_o those_o time_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o heart_n keep_v the_o heart_n prepare_v and_o ready_a to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o then_o every_o work_n will_v be_v easy_a object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n and_o labour_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n always_o bend_v and_o ready_a to_o good_a work_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v at_o first_o it_o may_v be_v some_o labour_n and_o toil_n but_o those_o that_o have_v once_o get_v their_o heart_n into_o a_o readiness_n find_v it_o not_o so_o hard_a but_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n

come_v a_o strong_a wind_n and_o toss_v the_o boat_n you_o shall_v have_v some_o silly_a people_n that_o will_v be_v shriek_v out_o and_o mighty_o trouble_v and_o through_o their_o passion_n will_v be_v rise_v up_o in_o the_o boat_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o tumble_v down_o all_o through_o their_o passionate_a carriage_n in_o the_o boat_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v skill_n will_v sit_v still_o and_o be_v quiet_a and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o stream_n and_o that_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o come_v with_o the_o great_a ease_n you_o make_v the_o boatmans_n labour_n so_o much_o the_o more_o difficult_a by_o your_o unquietness_n in_o the_o boat_n so_o certain_o you_o make_v the_o work_n of_o god_n more_o difficult_a when_o your_o heart_n be_v unquiet_a let_v the_o thing_n be_v what_o it_o will_v you_o will_v say_v oh_o no_o body_n condition_n be_v so_o as_o i_o certain_o your_o unquietness_n will_v not_o help_v you_o you_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o your_o land_a place_n if_o people_n toss_v from_o one_o side_n of_o the_o boat_n to_o the_o other_o and_o be_v unruly_a in_o their_o carriage_n they_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o their_o land_a place_n the_o quiet_a they_o sit_v in_o the_o boat_n the_o soon_o they_o will_v come_v to_o land_n so_o it_o be_v in_o a_o christian_n course_n he_o must_v not_o think_v to_o come_v to_o have_v his_o desire_n satisfy_v by_o his_o froward_a carriage_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o god_n or_o man_n or_o the_o mean_n that_o they_o do_v not_o work_v as_o they_o will_v have_v they_o but_o the_o not_o to_o afflict_v ourselves_o as_o papist_n to_o be_v whip_v ourselves_o and_o to_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o god_n never_o aequire_v at_o our_o hand_n but_o so_o far_o as_o any_o way_n god_n shall_v require_v it_o such_o a_o one_o be_v willing_a to_o afflict_v itself_o before_o the_o lord_n the_o main_a work_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o thing_n be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o solicitous_a so_o much_o for_o comfort_n as_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v afflict_v before_o the_o lord_n so_o far_o as_o god_n will_v have_v it_o afflict_v so_o now_o put_v all_o these_o together_o and_o you_o may_v see_v the_o behaviour_n of_o a_o lowly_a heart_n in_o respect_n of_o itself_o 1._o it_o be_v suspicious_a of_o itself_o jealous_a lest_o theâ—e_n shall_v be_v some_o secret_a evil_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o it_o do_v nor_o know_v of_o 2._o it_o be_v willing_a to_o know_v the_o worst_a of_o itself_o 3._o it_o look_v often_o to_o its_o poor_a beginning_n 4._o it_o be_v ashamed_a of_o itself_o and_o thâ—t_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o its_o own_o excellency_n 5._o it_o loathe_v and_o abhor_v itself_o before_o the_o lord_n 6._o it_o judge_v itself_o 7._o it_o deny_v itself_o 8._o it_o cxxv_o three_o consequence_n from_o the_o former_a point_n and_o from_o all_o these_o thing_n there_o be_v these_o three_o consequence_n consequence_n 1._o first_n here_o you_o may_v see_v how_o to_o examine_v your_o own_o heart_n in_o respect_n of_o humility_n whether_o you_o find_v these_o working_n of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n in_o respect_n of_o yourselves_o lay_v these_o and_o your_o heart_n level_v examine_v and_o call_v your_o heart_n to_o a_o account_n when_o you_o get_v alone_o by_o these_o twelve_o forego_v particular_n ask_v thyself_o as_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n be_v my_o heart_n thus_o have_v i_o this_o lowly_a heart_n christ_n will_v have_v i_o of_o a_o lowly_a heart_n thus_o if_o you_o can_v find_v these_o charge_v yourselves_o with_o the_o want_n of_o they_o and_o take_v a_o advantage_n even_o from_o the_o want_n of_o they_o to_o humble_v your_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n because_o you_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o genuine_a and_o natural_a working_n of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n for_o so_o they_o be_v if_o you_o can_v find_v your_o heart_n come_v off_o in_o in_o these_o particular_n in_o a_o natural_a way_n from_o a_o renew_a nature_n you_o may_v have_v abundance_n of_o comfort_n that_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n of_o lowliness_n that_o christ_n will_v have_v you_o learn_v be_v wrought_v in_o your_o soul_n you_o have_v be_v a_o proficient_a in_o christ_n school_n but_o many_o may_v have_v cause_n upon_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o to_o charge_v themselves_o with_o this_o that_o they_o scarce_o have_v begin_v to_o learn_v in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n to_o learn_v humility_n consequence_n 2._o second_o another_o consequence_n be_v this_o upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o these_o several_a working_n of_o humility_n in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v very_o much_o inward_a it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o reflection_n upon_o ourselves_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o a_o christian_n life_n but_o that_o that_o be_v external_a to_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n to_o come_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o speak_v good_a thing_n and_o pray_v and_o make_v a_o outward_a profession_n the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_a but_o from_o this_o that_o you_o hear_v from_o the_o work_n of_o this_o one_o grace_n of_o humility_n you_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a lie_n much_o within_o door_n that_o christian_n shall_v be_v very_o busy_a within_o their_o heart_n there_o be_v many_o working_n within_o rather_o then_o without_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v profess_v yourselves_o to_o be_v christian_n and_o will_v indeed_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o your_o heart_n you_o must_v work_v â—uch_o inward_o there_o must_v be_v much_o reflection_n upon_o your_o own_o heart_n consequence_n 3._o three_o and_o last_o another_o consequence_n be_v this_o by_o this_o that_o you_o have_v hear_v what_o the_o work_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n in_o respect_n of_o itself_o be_v we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o great_a power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a wretched_a sinner_n yea_o in_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v natural_o very_o proud_a for_o so_o we_o be_v all_o and_o be_v not_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n very_o powerful_a in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a these_o thing_n can_v never_o be_v wherefore_o when_o you_o hear_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o a_o heart_n work_v thus_o we_o may_v conclude_v sure_o the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v very_o mighty_a and_o very_o strong_a well_o thus_o you_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o humility_n present_v to_o you_o towards_o god_n and_o yourselves_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o be_v of_o lowly_a heart_n and_o be_v not_o at_o rest_n until_o you_o find_v these_o kind_n of_o working_n in_o your_o spirit_n chap._n cxxvi_o the_o first_o property_n of_o humility_n in_o respect_n of_o uther_n be_v that_o it_o think_v better_a of_o other_o than_o itself_o which_o be_v lay_v open_a in_o divers_a particular_a answer_n unto_o several_a doubt_n and_o objection_n there_o be_v yet_o one_o of_o these_o three_o thing_n to_o be_v speak_v unto_o in_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n which_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a what_o the_o behaviour_n of_o a_o humble_a great_a concernment_n and_o that_o be_v this_o first_o it_o think_v better_a of_o other_o than_o itself_o this_o great_a work_n of_o humility_n that_o have_v very_o much_o in_o it_o as_o i_o shall_v adorn_v with_o that_o grace_n how_o come_v it_o that_o man_n fall_v into_o wickedness_n and_o sin_n but_o at_o first_o this_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o it_o they_o by_o meditation_n suck_v out_o the_o sweetness_n of_o sin_n into_o their_o soul_n and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o that_o which_o they_o may_v get_v so_o much_o good_a by_o now_o by_o delight_v in_o the_o thought_n of_o a_o sin_n they_o come_v to_o fall_v into_o a_o sin_n therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o delight_v in_o the_o thought_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o come_v to_o fall_v into_o a_o sin_n so_o by_o delight_v of_o ourselves_o in_o the_o meditation_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o grace_n we_o may_v come_v to_o have_v that_o grace_n second_o labour_n to_o convince_v thy_o soul_n of_o the_o emptiness_n and_o under_o these_o three_o notion_n 1._o they_o be_v thing_n beneath_o the_o true_a excellency_n of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n the_o way_n to_o cure_v sinful_a pride_n be_v to_o have_v a_o holy_a gracious_a pride_n now_o a_o holy_a pride_n be_v to_o know_v what_o be_v the_o end_n of_o a_o rational_a creature_n what_o he_o be_v capable_a of_o to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o will_v take_v off_o the_o heart_n from_o all_o thing_n below_o look_v upon_o these_o thing_n as_o dog_n meat_n if_o you_o can_v but_o take_v off_o your_o heart_n from_o all_o these_o thing_n it_o will_v keep_v your_o heart_n low._n 2._o another_o notion_n be_v this_o consider_v that_o all_o these_o outward_a excellency_n make_v no_o great_a difference_n between_o man_n and_o man_n it_o may_v be_v you_o have_v more_o part_n than_o another_o you_o have_v more_o estate_n
in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o ease_n that_o he_o have_v in_o take_v up_o the_o way_n of_o god_n but_o by_o holiness_n it_o be_v in_o partial_a obedience_n it_o be_v but_o in_o part_n of_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o in_o all_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n he_o can_v take_v up_o some_o part_n some_o piece_n of_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o you_o come_v to_o urge_v he_o to_o take_v up_o all_o the_o way_n of_o god_n than_o he_o cry_v out_o what_o must_v we_o make_v conscience_n of_o all_o our_o thought_n of_o all_o our_o word_n and_o all_o our_o action_n when_o they_o be_v in_o a_o good_a mood_n than_o they_o can_v take_v up_o duty_n and_o read_v and_o pray_v and_o the_o like_a if_o any_o thing_n vex_v and_o trouble_v they_o then_o they_o can_v lay_v they_o down_o again_o and_o sometime_o when_o they_o listen_v they_o can_v come_v and_o hear_v sermon_n and_o when_o they_o listen_v they_o can_v go_v into_o bad_a company_n go_v into_o the_o tavern_n and_o the_o like_a but_o now_o a_o gracious_a heart_n find_v the_o great_a ease_n when_o it_o can_v be_v constant_a in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n when_o i_o can_v bring_v my_o heart_n to_o this_o that_o there_o be_v a_o evenness_n and_o proportion_n between_o what_o i_o do_v at_o one_o time_n and_o what_o i_o do_v at_o another_o time_n there_o be_v the_o great_a ease_n to_o a_o gracious_a heart_n and_o indeed_o there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a comfort_n in_o any_o holy_a duty_n where_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o constant_a the_o constancy_n and_o the_o evenness_n of_o spirit_n and_o the_o proportion_n that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o thing_n and_o another_o be_v that_o that_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a unto_o the_o saint_n as_o in_o go_v in_o any_o way_n or_o common_a path_n if_o a_o man_n have_v one_o ledg_n long_o and_o another_o short_a or_o if_o the_o way_n be_v uneven_a sometime_o plain_a sometime_o rugged_a sometime_o down_o hill_n and_o sometime_o uphil_a that_o be_v hard_a to_o a_o man_n in_o his_o walk_n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a that_o that_o make_v it_o difficult_a be_v this_o oh_o i_o can_v find_v my_o heart_n in_o a_o constant_a evenness_n be_v my_o heart_n so_o than_o i_o shall_v find_v ease_n but_o that_o which_o make_v it_o most_o difficult_a it_o be_v the_o unevenness_n of_o my_o heart_n on_o the_o contrary_a put_v now_o a_o carnal_a heart_n to_o this_o to_o a_o constancy_n in_o any_o duty_n or_o work_n for_o god_n o_o it_o will_v cry_v out_o of_o weariness_n in_o god_n way_n perhaps_o he_o will_v be_v content_a to_o be_v a_o while_n in_o holy_a duty_n to_o hear_v a_o short_a sermon_n and_o go_v away_o again_o but_o to_o spend_v the_o whole_a sabbath_n that_o be_v wearisome_a to_o he_o nay_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o keep_v one_o sabbath_n but_o to_o keep_v sabbath_n after_o sabbath_n that_o be_v burdensome_a to_o he_o and_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o pray_v one_o morning_n in_o his_o family_n but_o to_o pray_v every_o morning_n and_o every_o night_n and_o to_o go_v on_o from_o morning_n to_o morning_n and_o from_o day_n to_o day_n and_o from_o week_n to_o week_n and_o from_o year_n to_o year_n oh_o this_o be_v wearisome_a true_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o grudge_n god_n any_o service_n all_o our_o day_n but_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n six_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n have_v it_o be_v in_o his_o remissness_n in_o duty_n in_o the_o remissness_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o his_o moderation_n that_o he_o plead_v for_o there_o lie_v his_o ease_n but_o for_o the_o other_o the_o extension_n of_o duty_n that_o he_o plead_v not_o for_o you_o shall_v have_v a_o carnal_a heart_n plead_v for_o holy_a duty_n but_o with_o moderation_n we_o must_v be_v moderate_a and_o if_o we_o do_v something_o that_o god_n require_v though_o we_o be_v not_o so_o hot_a and_o fiery_a as_o other_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v well_o enough_o do_v not_o virtue_n consist_v in_o the_o middle_a way_n as_o i_o like_v not_o the_o profaneness_n of_o some_o man_n that_o be_v swearer_n and_o drunkard_n &_o whoremonger_n on_o the_o one_o duty_n but_o now_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n lie_v in_o the_o exactness_n of_o his_o spirit_n to_o come_v to_o the_o very_a top_n of_o holy_a duty_n it_o be_v with_o a_o gracious_a heart_n as_o it_o be_v with_o many_o fowl_n you_o shall_v have_v many_o fowl_n that_o fly_v when_o they_o be_v low_a they_o flutter_v and_o it_o be_v a_o trouble_n to_o they_o to_o get_v on_o high_a be_v the_o bring_v thou_o under_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n therefore_o let_v not_o those_o that_o god_n be_v beginning_n to_o stir_v they_o in_o awaknâ—ng_v their_o conscience_n be_v offend_v because_o they_o find_v difficulty_n because_o they_o find_v the_o way_n of_o god_n terrible_a to_o they_o and_o conscience_n terrible_a to_o they_o and_o they_o find_v the_o flash_n of_o hell_n that_o be_v the_o three_o answer_n i_o will_v give_v to_o the_o godly_a that_o yet_o find_v difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n it_o be_v not_o because_o of_o the_o yoke_n but_o it_o be_v because_o you_o be_v not_o enough_o under_o the_o yoke_n that_o be_v the_o difficulty_n if_o your_o heart_n be_v under_o it_o more_o than_o it_o be_v it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o difficult_a and_o this_o expression_n may_v serve_v to_o enlighten_v we_o into_o the_o four_o answer_n which_o be_v this_o four_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v hard_o but_o it_o be_v because_o of_o and_o riggle_v this_o way_n and_o that_o way_n and_o they_o be_v so_o unquiet_a when_o they_o be_v under_o the_o yoke_n that_o they_o toil_n and_o trouble_v themselves_o abundant_o more_o than_o another_o that_o can_v carry_v the_o yoke_n quiet_o that_o go_v on_o quiet_o with_o his_o yoke_n so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n if_o they_o can_v do_v it_o as_o they_o will_v they_o do_v so_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o be_v so_o disquiet_v in_o their_o spirit_n and_o so_o tumultuous_a in_o their_o spirit_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o conscience_n will_v keep_v it_o on_o and_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o there_o be_v such_o a_o disorderliness_n of_o spirit_n and_o such_o tumultuousness_n of_o spirit_n this_o make_v duty_n difficult_a whereas_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o performance_n of_o duty_n if_o thou_o can_v be_v under_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n with_o a_o calm_a quiet_a spirit_n and_o carry_v it_o in_o a_o meek_a way_n oh_o the_o sweetness_n that_o thou_o will_v find_v there_o how_o many_o time_n shall_v you_o have_v many_o people_n that_o when_o they_o go_v to_o prayer_n if_o they_o can_v pray_v as_o they_o will_v do_v than_o they_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v to_o pray_v no_o more_o and_o why_o shall_v they_o pray_v any_o more_o they_o be_v so_o disturb_v in_o the_o duty_n they_o think_v it_o be_v better_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o and_o they_o begin_v to_o have_v hard_a thought_n of_o the_o duty_n and_o so_o their_o spirit_n be_v all_o way_n complain_v of_o a_o yoke_n to_o be_v hard_a whenas_o the_o cast_n of_o the_o yoke_n off_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a thing_n than_o the_o bear_n of_o it_o therefore_o the_o hebrew_n word_n that_o signify_v sin_n signify_v also_o labour_n and_o trouble_v there_o be_v more_o trouble_n if_o thou_o shall_v cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n thou_o will_v find_v more_o distress_n of_o spirit_n and_o more_o difficulty_n in_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n then_o to_o be_v under_o the_o yoke_n it_o be_v true_a those_o that_o be_v carnal_a and_o wicked_a do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o but_o if_o thou_o have_v grace_n if_o thou_o shall_v cast_v off_o the_o duty_n because_o of_o the_o difficulty_n thou_o will_v find_v it_o more_o difficult_a to_o be_v without_o the_o duty_n then_o to_o perform_v it_o as_o i_o will_v instance_n to_o your_o own_o experience_n you_o fiend_n sometime_o that_o your_o heart_n be_v loath_a to_o come_v off_o to_o prayer_n

weary_a and_o tire_v they_o by_o put_v they_o unreasonable_o upon_o duty_n as_o i_o have_v know_v some_o they_o can_v not_o be_v at_o their_o work_n a_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n but_o sudden_o they_o must_v leave_v all_o and_o go_v to_o prayer_n and_o they_o think_v it_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o the_o dictate_v of_o conscience_n and_o they_o think_v they_o must_v not_o neglect_v it_o and_o so_o make_v their_o life_n uncomfortable_a upon_o that_o ground_n whereas_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v people_n upon_o duty_n seasonable_o every_o thing_n in_o its_o right_a order_n and_o right_a way_n and_o in_o its_o due_a time_n it_o will_v put_v you_o upon_o prayer_n in_o a_o fit_a time_n and_o put_v you_o upon_o duty_n of_o your_o call_n in_o a_o fit_a time_n and_o when_o it_o come_v unreasonable_o to_o disquiet_v you_o it_o be_v rather_o a_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n to_o disquiet_v you_o then_o to_o make_v you_o to_o obey_v christ_n yoke_n 2._o may_v be_v it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o eternal_a life_n as_o that_o which_o our_o eternal_a life_n depend_v not_o as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n upon_o which_o eternal_a life_n depend_v but_o the_o safety_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o eternal_a life_n be_v in_o another_o way_n and_o all_o that_o which_o we_o do_v be_v rather_o in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o mercy_n gravel_n see_v if_o there_o be_v any_o particular_a sin_n that_o you_o know_v to_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o particular_o repent_v of_o that_o and_o that_o will_v make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a to_o you_o the_o often_o renew_v of_o repentance_n will_v make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a 6._o labour_n by_o wisdom_n to_o order_v the_o duty_n of_o your_o condition_n that_o be_v thus_o labour_n they_o think_v they_o shall_v rejoice_v and_o when_o they_o be_v call_v to_o believe_a than_o they_o will_v be_v pore_v upon_o their_o corruption_n and_o when_o god_n call_v they_o to_o search_v of_o that_o belong_v to_o he_o and_o that_o be_v the_o success_n i_o tell_v you_o in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o ease_n that_o there_o be_v certain_a success_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v trouble_v ourselves_o in_o cark_n about_o success_n now_o if_o we_o can_v go_v on_o in_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o never_o be_v trouble_v about_o success_n it_o will_v be_v exceed_o easy_a but_o christian_n find_v sometime_o that_o though_o they_o have_v be_v diligent_a in_o performance_n of_o duty_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o find_v success_n they_o find_v nothing_o come_v of_o it_o and_o this_o trouble_v they_o
