Let every foul be subject to the higher powers Rom. 13. 1. Q. Why must every soul be subject to them A. For there is no power but of God the powers that be are ordained of God Rom. 13. 1. Q. What doth he that resisteth the power and what shall they receive to themselves A. Whosoever resisteth the power resisteth the ordinance of God and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation Rom. 13. 2. Qu. Why shall they that resist receive damnation A. For rulers are not a terrour to good works but to evil Rom. 13. 3. Qu. How shall a man behave himself that he need not fear the power and whence cometh it so to pass A. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power do that which is good and thou shalt have praise of the same For he is the minister of God to thee for good but if thou do that which is evil be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain for he is the minister of God a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil Rom. 13. 3 4. Q. Is not the fear of wrath or punishment the onely motive to subjection A. Ye must needs be subject not onely for wrath but also for conscience sake Rom. 13. 5. Qu. Though what you have cited out of the apostle Paul doth intimate the duty of the Magistrate yet have you not some passage of Scripture that doth expresly set it down A. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church and he is the Saviour of the body Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ so let wives be to their own husbands in every thing Husbands love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it That he might sanctifie and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word That he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies he that loveth his wife loveth himself For no man ever yet hated his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even as the Lord doth the church For we are members of his body of his flesh and of his bones For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall cleave unto his wife and they two shall be one flesh This is a great mystery but I speak concerning Christ and the church Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself and the wife see that she reverence her husband Eph. 5. 22 23 c.
