of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n that_o we_o be_v not_o consume_v sure_o many_o who_o have_v offend_v less_o have_v be_v just_o send_v to_o everlasting_a burn_n do_v now_o dwell_v with_o devour_a flame_n and_o why_o shall_v a_o live_a man_n complain_v it_o be_v certain_o more_o rational_a to_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o evil_a that_o occasion_v the_o rod_n that_o our_o present_a misery_n may_v not_o be_v the_o prelude_n to_o more_o last_a torment_n nay_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o more_o offend_v god_n that_o be_v more_o contrary_a to_o the_o pattern_n set_v before_o we_o than_o to_o murmur_v and_o repine_v let_v we_o therefore_o study_v to_o bear_v the_o resemblance_n of_o our_o elder_a brother_n that_o our_o heavenly_a father_n may_v acknowledge_v we_o for_o his_o child_n in_o the_o next_o place_n christ_n obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n be_v set_v forth_o as_o our_o precedent_n and_o can_v any_o thing_n more_o powerful_o persuade_v we_o to_o obedience_n than_o his_o example_n which_o not_o only_o discover_v our_o duty_n but_o also_o inspirit_n and_o enable_v we_o to_o perform_v it_o if_o the_o marvellous_a pattern_n of_o christ_n entire_a obedience_n do_v not_o form_v our_o will_n to_o do_v what_o god_n enjoin_v i_o scarce_o know_v any_o argument_n that_o will_v prove_v ●ffectual_a and_o now_o how_o serious_a be_v our_o lord_n christ_n in_o dispatch_v that_o business_n his_o father_n entrust_v he_o with_o the_o work_n that_o his_o father_n give_v he_o to_o do_v he_o finish_v it_o joh._n 17.4_o and_o he_o testify_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o do_v always_o those_o thing_n that_o please_v his_o father_n joh._n 8.29_o and_o that_o he_o may_v more_o emphatical_o express_v this_o he_o tell_v we_o joh._n 4.34_o my_o meat_n be_v to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o he_o that_o send_v i_o and_o to_o finish_v his_o work_n and_o indeed_o in_o that_o he_o so_o entire_o resign_v the_o whole_a power_n of_o his_o will_n to_o his_o father_n not_o my_o will_n but_o thy_o will_n be_v do_v we_o have_v the_o most_o unquestionable_a proof_n of_o his_o perfect_a obedience_n he_o be_v as_o the_o great_a apostle_n tell_v we_o obedient_a to_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n submit_v to_o the_o most_o dreadful_a suffering_n that_o he_o may_v instruct_v we_o to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n even_o as_o he_o keep_v his_o father_n commandment_n joh._n 15.10_o and_o that_o the_o same_o mind_n be_v in_o we_o that_o be_v in_o he_o but_o god_n know_v how_o little_o we_o regard_v either_o his_o precept_n or_o example_n for_o although_o our_o great_a master_n have_v make_v his_o obedience_n our_o rule_n yet_o how_o ready_a be_v we_o to_o despise_v it_o if_o in_o the_o least_o it_o cross_v our_o humour_n or_o carnal_a interest_n alas_o little_a do_v we_o consider_v that_o obedience_n be_v essential_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o our_o supreme_a happiness_n and_o that_o torment_n as_o severe_a and_o intolerable_a as_o they_o be_v last_v be_v the_o lot_n of_o the_o disobedient_a it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o the_o rebellious_a posterity_n of_o adam_n will_v but_o serious_o ponder_v what_o they_o will_v be_v able_a to_o say_v in_o the_o great_a day_n of_o audit_n sure_a i_o be_o the_o whole_a contexture_n and_o harmony_n of_o the_o divine_a precept_n and_o doctrine_n be_v equitable_a and_o just_a and_o therefore_o call_v for_o our_o hearty_a compliance_n with_o they_o the_o wise_a god_n never_o issue_v out_o any_o command_n which_o can_v not_o be_v obey_v he_o be_v not_o like_o the_o egyptian_a taskmaster_n to_o require_v brick_n while_o there_o be_v no_o straw_n nay_o indeed_o our_o duty_n and_o interest_n be_v couple_v together_o so_o close_o that_o if_o we_o disobey_v and_o rebel_v we_o may_v thank_v ourselves_o for_o the_o misery_n we_o have_v choose_v and_o as_o his_o obedience_n be_v set_v before_o we_o for_o imitation_n so_o be_v his_o love_n charity_n and_o compassion_n also_o his_o whole_a life_n be_v spend_v in_o do_v good_a to_o man_n how_o transcendent_a be_v his_o love_n in_o pity_v we_o in_o our_o degenerate_a and_o forlorn_a estate_n when_o we_o be_v at_o odds_o with_o heaven_n and_o incapable_a to_o help_v ourselves_o then_o even_o then_o do_v he_o commiserate_v our_o case_n and_o by_o his_o own_o blood_n reconcile_v we_o to_o the_o father_n it_o be_v the_o great_a demonstration_n of_o love_n imaginable_a for_o a_o man_n to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o his_o friend_n joh._n 15.13_o and_o yet_o more_o wonderful_a be_v the_o love_n of_o our_o redeemer_n in_o pass_v through_o so_o many_o cruel_a suffering_n for_o we_o who_o be_v but_o rebel_n and_o enemy_n o_o how_o shall_v the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o boundless_a compassion_n transport_v and_o ravish_v we_o with_o love_n how_o strange_a be_v it_o that_o the_o high_a endearment_n of_o love_n have_v not_o inflame_v our_o spirit_n and_o make_v love_n mutual_a and_o reciprocal_a love_n be_v a_o most_o excellent_a affection_n of_o a_o noble_a original_n by_o which_o we_o resemble_v the_o best_a of_o being_n the_o great_a god_n be_v by_o the_o belove_a disciple_n describe_v to_o be_v love_n and_o indeed_o well_o do_v this_o description_n suit_n with_o his_o deal_n with_o man_n but_o alas_o how_o unlike_a be_v we_o to_o god_n in_o this_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o duty_n more_o frequent_o inculcate_v by_o our_o saviour_n than_o love_n john_n 15.12_o this_o be_v my_o commandment_n that_o you_o love_v one_o another_o as_o i_o have_v love_v you_o and_o yet_o how_o little_a efficacy_n have_v either_o his_o precept_n or_o example_n with_o we_o bless_a redeemer_n how_o unworthy_a do_v impure_a earthworm_n require_v thy_o love_n thou_o have_v not_o be_v want_v to_o conquer_v our_o affection_n and_o to_o inflame_v our_o freeze_a heart_n with_o love_n to_o thou_o and_o to_o our_o neighbour_n also_o thy_o life_n and_o death_n comprehend_v the_o most_o endear_n argument_n imaginable_a and_o yet_o well_o may_v thou_o ask_v we_o as_o once_o thou_o do_v peter_n love_v you_o i_o but_o god_n know_v there_o be_v but_o a_o very_a few_o who_o can_v unfeigned_o say_v as_o this_o disciple_n do_v lord_n thou_o know_v that_o i_o love_v thou_o we_o can_v remember_v all_o thy_o sorrow_n without_o tear_n and_o look_v upon_o thy_o agony_n with_o a_o unconcerned_a eye_n we_o can_v view_v thou_o in_o the_o garden_n when_o grief_n and_o pain_n make_v thou_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n and_o behold_v thou_o as_o thou_o stand_v accuse_v as_o a_o malefactor_n before_o pilate_n as_o thou_o be_v contemn_v scourge_v and_o deride_v by_o impure_a worm_n and_o most_o spiteful_o represent_v in_o a_o fool_n habit_n we_o can_v ascend_v mount_n calvary_n and_o contemplate_v thou_o as_o endure_v the_o most_o shameful_a death_n of_o the_o cross_n and_o hang_v betwixt_o two_o thief_n and_o all_o this_o time_n have_v adamantine_a heart_n which_o receive_v no_o impression_n bless_a redeemer_n come_v touch_v these_o heart_n of_o we_o that_o they_o may_v be_v overcome_v with_o love_n that_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n may_v be_v perfect_o mould_v according_a to_o thy_o pleasure_n sure_o if_o we_o have_v any_o spark_n of_o generosity_n or_o common_a ingenuity_n we_o can_v not_o thus_o despise_v so_o much_o love_v the_o very_a publican_n who_o be_v repute_v the_o worst_a of_o man_n yet_o love_v those_o that_o love_v they_o and_o it_o have_v even_o in_o the_o most_o degenerate_a time_n be_v reckon_v the_o high_a baseness_n to_o contemn_v benefactor_n yet_o more_o brutish_a be_v we_o become_v than_o these_o and_o may_v very_o fit_o be_v rank_v in_o a_o category_n inferior_a to_o that_o of_o bruit_n for_o the_o ass_n as_o sacred_a writ_n tell_v we_o know_v his_o master_n crib_n and_o the_o ox_n his_o owner_n isa_n 1.3_o the_o very_a beast_n in_o their_o own_o manner_n express_v a_o kind_n of_o love_n to_o their_o benefactor_n and_o yet_o although_o our_o redeemer_n have_v make_v our_o peace_n by_o his_o blood_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o have_v reverse_v that_o sentence_n of_o damnation_n pass_v upon_o we_o although_o he_o have_v endure_v the_o great_a dishonour_n and_o pain_n imaginable_a that_o we_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v yet_o this_o unparalleled_a kindness_n the_o great_a endearment_n of_o love_n have_v not_o have_v the_o kindly_a effect_n to_o quicken_v our_o dead_a and_o benumb_a heart_n but_o like_o a_o lifeless_a carcase_n we_o remain_v insensible_a without_o the_o least_o return_n of_o love_n and_o indeed_o it_o can_v scarce_o be_v well_o expect_v that_o the_o example_n of_o his_o love_n to_o we_o shall_v engage_v we_o to_o love_v one_o another_o since_o it_o have_v produce_v so_o little_a love_n in_o we_o to_o himself_o but_o however_o i_o need_v not_o take_v much_o pain_n to_o prove_v that_o hereby_o we_o demonstrate_v
holiness_n which_o of_o all_o thing_n be_v the_o most_o noble_a most_o excellent_a and_o the_o most_o lovely_a shall_v even_o abstract_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o its_o utility_n and_o advantage_n conquer_v our_o esteem_n but_o god_n know_v how_o much_o our_o deprave_a nature_n in_o this_o lapse_v estate_n stand_v in_o need_n of_o encouragement_n to_o excite_v we_o to_o our_o duty_n and_o i_o wish_v common_a experience_n do_v not_o make_v it_o too_o certain_a that_o all_o motive_n be_v little_a enough_o to_o form_v we_o to_o holiness_n in_o the_o former_a chapter_n i_o have_v only_o lay_v a_o foundation_n to_o this_o for_o i_o think_v it_o fit_a to_o tell_v man_n what_o i_o understand_v by_o holiness_n before_o i_o shall_v excite_v they_o to_o it_o in_o this_o dark_a age_n of_o the_o world_n we_o want_v not_o instance_n god_n know_v too_o many_o of_o man_n too_o frequent_a mistake_a vice_n for_o virtue_n to_o prevent_v which_o error_n it_o be_v think_v necessary_a to_o show_v man_n their_o duty_n and_o have_v do_v this_o the_o next_o thing_n i_o propose_v be_v to_o lay_v down_o several_a motive_n and_o inducement_n to_o engage_v man_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o holiness_n found_v sole_o upon_o this_o that_o all_o those_o endear_n argument_n that_o prevail_v with_o we_o to_o perform_v any_o duty_n or_o action_n relate_v to_o our_o secular_a concern_v do_v more_o powerful_o oblige_v we_o to_o be_v holy_a this_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o subject_n which_o for_o its_o nobleness_n deserve_v a_o better_a judgement_n a_o more_o clear_a wit_n and_o a_o more_o enliven_a and_o quick_a fancy_n to_o handle_v it_o than_o i_o can_v pretend_v to_o yet_o if_o i_o can_v but_o prevail_v with_o other_o to_o perfect_v what_o i_o have_v begin_v i_o shall_v not_o think_v i_o have_v much_o misemployed_a my_o time_n in_o write_v this_o discourse_n this_o chapter_n be_v like_a to_o be_v somewhat_o disproportionable_a to_o the_o rest_n in_o length_n it_o be_v at_o first_o the_o only_o design_v subject_n to_o be_v discourse_v on_o i_o shall_v therefore_o divide_v it_o into_o several_a section_n sect_n 1._o the_o noble_a pattern_n of_o holiness_n the_o great_a inclination_n of_o mankind_n to_o imitation_n give_v ground_n i_o doubt_v not_o to_o that_o old_a maxim_n plus_fw-fr docent_fw-la exempla_fw-la quàm_fw-la praecepta_fw-la our_o deprave_a nature_n be_v duty_n &_o be_v make_v as_o light_v of_o as_o samson_n make_v of_o those_o rope_n with_o which_o he_o be_v bind_v before_o his_o lock_n be_v cut_v but_o o_o what_o a_o secret_a and_o powerful_a influence_n have_v example_n on_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n i_o have_v see_v servant_n and_o child_n who_o have_v contemn_v command_n yet_o shame_v to_o their_o duty_n by_o the_o example_n of_o their_o master_n and_o parent_n the_o courage_n and_o valour_n of_o a_o captain_n prove_v frequent_o more_o powerful_a to_o inspirit_v inferior_a soldier_n than_o the_o most_o forcible_a injunction_n and_o help_n to_o make_v even_o coward_n stout_a whileas_o a_o timorous_a commander_n dishearten_v the_o brave_a soldier_n and_o by_o his_o flight_n will_v make_v they_o who_o fear_v no_o danger_n turn_v their_o back_n common_a experience_n make_v it_o past_a doubt_n that_o the_o patrociny_n and_o example_n of_o great_a man_n be_v enough_o to_o render_v any_o thing_n fashionable_a we_o daily_o have_v proof_n of_o this_o before_o our_o eye_n nay_o so_o powerful_a do_v example_n sometime_o prove_v that_o not_o only_o the_o silly_a mode_n and_o gesture_n of_o man_n have_v be_v imitate_v but_o holiness_n shall_v be_v as_o fashionable_a as_o they_o have_v now_o make_v vice_n by_o their_o patrociny_n in_o sacred_a writ_n we_o read_v that_o when_o the_o ruler_n of_o judah_n and_o israel_n be_v religious_a and_o example_n of_o virtue_n that_o the_o whole_a people_n imitate_v their_o footstep_n and_o worship_v the_o lord_n god_n of_o their_o father_n but_o when_o the_o ruler_n become_v patron_n of_o vice_n than_o the_o whole_a people_n sacrifice_v in_o the_o high_a place_n and_o worship_v their_o calf_n at_o dan_n and_o bethel_n it_o be_v indeed_o a_o case_n that_o well_o deserve_v to_o be_v regret_v with_o flood_n of_o tear_n that_o the_o footstep_n of_o those_o who_o transgress_v shall_v prove_v more_o efficacious_a and_o effectual_a and_o have_v a_o great_a influence_n on_o man_n than_o the_o precedent_n of_o good_a man_n but_o more_o lamentable_a be_v it_o that_o despise_a virtue_n lie_v like_o the_o contemn_a ash_n on_o the_o level_n and_o have_v so_o few_o to_o raise_v up_o its_o esteem_n by_o their_o example_n and_o now_o see_v example_n have_v so_o much_o force_n methinks_v i_o hear_v the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n say_v as_o abimeleck_n say_v to_o we_o to_o live_v holy_a than_o this_o methinks_v our_o have_v so_o brave_a a_o example_n shall_v provoke_v we_o to_o follow_v his_o footstep_n who_o do_v no_o sin_n neither_o be_v guile_n find_v in_o his_o mouth_n there_o be_v two_o chief_a reason_n that_o great_o prevail_v with_o we_o to_o imitate_v other_o example_n first_o the_o dignity_n and_o greatness_n of_o the_o person_n second_o interest_n and_o advantage_n now_o both_o these_o motive_n shall_v most_o powerful_o prevail_v with_o we_o to_o make_v christ_n the_o copy_n of_o our_o life_n for_o first_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o dignity_n and_o worth_n of_o his_o person_n be_v he_o not_o the_o son_n of_o the_o live_a god_n who_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o humiliation_n think_v it_o no_o robbery_n to_o be_v call_v equal_a with_o god_n he_o be_v not_o a_o person_n of_o a_o mean_a and_o low_a extraction_n how_o mean_o soever_o he_o live_v here_o but_o one_o of_o extraordinary_a worth_n who_o by_o partake_v of_o humane_a nature_n elevate_v it_o to_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o honour_n he_o be_v not_o only_o the_o chief_a among_o stten_a thousand_o but_o the_o delight_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n before_o who_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o earth_n must_v appear_v and_o the_o great_a man_n to_o give_v he_o a_o account_n of_o their_o work_n and_o as_o for_o interest_n i_o shall_v afterward_o make_v it_o plain_a that_o we_o in_o nothing_o more_o cross_a our_o advantage_n than_o in_o walk_v contrary_n to_o christ_n but_o alas_o how_o little_o be_v we_o move_v by_o this_o noble_a precedent_n to_o mind_n holiness_n how_o seldom_o do_v we_o express_v in_o our_o action_n the_o virtue_n of_o our_o spiritual_a king_n although_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o rational_a more_o equitable_a and_o just_a than_o to_o follow_v his_o footstep_n who_o have_v call_v we_o to_o his_o kingdom_n and_o glory_n nothing_o more_o honourable_a nor_o can_v advance_v our_o happiness_n more_o than_o to_o be_v conform_v to_o the_o image_n of_o christ_n yet_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o most_o endear_n encouragement_n we_o have_v as_o much_o set_v at_o nought_o his_o example_n as_o herod_n and_o his_o man_n of_o war_n do_v his_o person_n luke_n 23.11_o alas_o what_o tear_n be_v sufficient_a to_o express_v and_o set_v forth_o this_o exceed_a great_a madness_n and_o insolency_n methinks_v i_o hear_v our_o bless_a prince_n speak_v thus_o in_o his_o own_o vindication_n you_o unwise_a and_o foolish_a son_n of_o man_n how_o long_o will_v you_o prefer_v imperfect_a and_o ignoble_a pattern_n to_o one_o that_o be_v every_o for_o the_o most_o exact_a pattern_n that_o you_o may_v conform_v what_o you_o design_v according_a to_o it_o but_o in_o matter_n of_o everlasting_a moment_n
inquisition_n i_o shall_v first_o brief_o represent_v the_o nature_n of_o true_a holiness_n and_o show_v the_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n of_o it_o second_o i_o shall_v discourse_v of_o its_o rule_n
