drunkenness_n be_v not_o be_v intoxicate_v with_o some_o liquor_n of_o who_o strength_n we_o be_v ignorant_a but_o lose_v the_o government_n of_o ourselves_o when_o we_o be_v aware_a of_o the_o danger_n and_o can_v have_v prevent_v it_o 4._o but_o this_o in_o effect_n have_v be_v say_v already_o and_o therefore_o to_o bring_v this_o matter_n to_o a_o speedy_a issue_n let_v such_o as_o say_v otherways_o be_v a_o contradiction_n for_o it_o be_v to_o say_v he_o can_v do_v what_o he_o can_v now_o do_v what_o you_o can_v and_o i_o will_v undertake_v god_n shall_v not_o charge_v you_o with_o what_o you_o can_v but_o if_o you_o do_v not_o what_o you_o be_v able_a you_o will_v be_v charge_v both_o with_o that_o and_o with_o the_o guilt_n of_o not_o do_v that_o unto_o which_o in_o time_n you_o may_v have_v be_v enable_v for_o god_n have_v promise_v that_o they_o who_o seek_v shall_v find_v that_o he_o will_v open_v to_o they_o that_o knock_v and_o gracious_o answer_v they_o that_o yourselves_o for_o the_o holy_a communion_n have_v you_o ever_o try_v have_v you_o go_v about_o the_o work_n and_o make_v a_o serious_a and_o hearty_a attempt_n towards_o the_o reformation_n of_o yourselves_o if_o you_o have_v not_o how_o come_v you_o to_o be_v so_o bold_a as_o to_o say_v you_o can_v do_v that_o which_o you_o have_v not_o yet_o try_v and_o endeavour_v to_o do_v what_o a_o prevarication_n be_v this_o with_o god_n and_o your_o own_o conscience_n though_o i_o doubt_v this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o most_o of_o those_o man_n who_o plead_v inability_n when_o they_o never_o in_o good_a earnest_n make_v a_o experiment_n what_o may_v be_v do_v in_o the_o use_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o god_n have_v appoint_v and_o be_v in_o our_o power_n to_o use_v but_o if_o you_o have_v try_v and_o miscarry_v why_o do_v you_o not_o try_v again_o and_o after_o that_o again_z and_o again_o and_o that_o with_o great_a diligence_n and_o care_n than_o before_o for_o this_o you_o can_v have_v do_v and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v judge_v reasonable_a in_o our_o worldly_a affair_n to_o attempt_v over_o and_o over_o again_o the_o same_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v fail_v at_o the_o first_o in_o hope_n of_o better_a success_n at_o last_o and_o not_o be_v think_v fit_a nay_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o be_v willing_a to_o use_v the_o same_o repeat_v diligence_n notwithstanding_o such_o like_a discouragement_n in_o the_o weighty_a concernment_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o since_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n we_o can_v do_v the_o one_o for_o we_o do_v it_o we_o ought_v to_o conclude_v that_o we_o can_v if_o we_o set_v ourselves_o to_o it_o do_v the_o other_o for_o a_o soul_n can_v do_v more_o for_o itself_o than_o for_o any_o thing_n else_o if_o it_o will_v but_o consider_v what_o a_o valuable_a be_v it_o be_v and_o where_o its_o true_a interest_n lie_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n this_o be_v the_o first_o answer_n to_o the_o pretence_n of_o unfitness_n and_o what_o be_v last_o say_v may_v serve_v for_o a_o answer_n also_o to_o those_o that_o complain_v of_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o want_v of_o affection_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o holy_a duty_n let_v they_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o be_v able_a and_o they_o will_v find_v acceptance_n with_o god_n and_o grow_v more_o affect_v with_o his_o love_n and_o for_o a_o answer_n to_o those_o also_o that_o say_v they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n it_o be_v certain_a they_o be_v something_o the_o better_a by_o their_o very_a come_n thither_o if_o they_o do_v not_o come_v without_o a_o resolution_n of_o amendment_n for_o that_o resolution_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o keep_v they_o shall_v not_o thereby_o have_v be_v discourage_v from_o come_v again_o but_o rather_o have_v renew_v it_o which_o have_v be_v still_o a_o better_a thing_n and_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v give_v over_o the_o attempt_n upon_o a_o new_a miscarriage_n but_o still_o labour_v and_o endeavour_v to_o settle_v this_o resolution_n so_o steadfast_o by_o constant_a renewal_n of_o their_o covenant_n with_o christ_n that_o at_o last_o it_o may_v have_v stand_v unmoveable_a in_o all_o those_o temptation_n which_o be_v wont_a to_o overthrow_v it_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o christ_n not_o to_o sit_v down_o content_v with_o complaint_n of_o our_o unfitness_n to_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o but_o never_o to_o rest_v satisfy_v till_o by_o our_o earnest_n and_o repeat_v endeavour_n we_o be_v better_o dispose_v ii_o and_o there_o be_v this_o great_a reason_n to_o enforce_v such_o endeavour_n which_o these_o complainer_n will_v do_v well_o to_o lay_v to_o heart_n that_o if_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o holy_a duty_n of_o commemorate_n the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o receive_v the_o token_n and_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n they_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o think_v themselves_o fit_a for_o other_o holy_a duty_n which_o be_v confess_v by_o all_o to_o be_v of_o daily_a use_n viz._n for_o prayer_n for_o thanksgiving_n and_o praise_v god_n which_o duty_n if_o man_n be_v not_o fit_a to_o perform_v they_o ought_v to_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o not_o fit_a to_o live_v in_o the_o world_n or_o to_o go_v out_o of_o it_o but_o if_o they_o be_v not_o unfit_a for_o these_o then_o how_o can_v they_o say_v they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o since_o our_o part_n in_o the_o holy_a communion_n be_v whole_o perform_v by_o devout_a prayer_n and_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n with_o such_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o holy_a resolution_n as_o aught_o always_o to_o accompany_v those_o holy_a action_n and_o our_o part_n be_v thus_o perform_v what_o reason_n have_v we_o to_o think_v that_o god_n will_v not_o perform_v he_o by_o account_v we_o worthy_a to_o receive_v those_o blessing_n which_o he_o there_o impart_v for_o he_o be_v always_o more_o ready_a to_o give_v than_o we_o be_v to_o receive_v and_o we_o be_v not_o unmeet_a to_o receive_v when_o we_o be_v thus_o dispose_v to_o ask_v to_o this_o purpose_n you_o may_v remember_v i_o allege_v st._n chrysostoms_n word_n in_o my_o former_a discourse_n be_v thou_o not_o worthy_a to_o partake_v of_o the_o sacrifice_n then_o be_v thou_o not_o caviller_n that_o by_o break_v of_o bread_n be_v here_o mean_v this_o holy_a action_n of_o receive_v the_o communion_n and_o not_o their_o bare_a eat_v together_o but_o to_o give_v full_a appoint_v on_o purpose_n for_o the_o commemoration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o of_o god_n love_n therein_o manifest_v be_v neglect_v it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o the_o same_o love_n of_o god_n he_o at_o his_o table_n else_o they_o be_v not_o his_o friend_n and_o if_o not_o friend_n than_o stranger_n or_o enemy_n for_o what_o medium_n be_v there_o between_o these_o or_o how_o can_v man_n pretend_v to_o be_v friend_n to_o christ_n by_o be_v in_o covenant_n with_o he_o and_o refuse_v to_o commemorate_v his_o death_n which_o seal_v that_o covenant_n because_o they_o be_v unfit_a always_o unfit_a to_o make_v that_o commemoration_n these_o thing_n be_v utter_o inconsistent_a either_o we_o must_v confess_v we_o be_v not_o in_o covenant_n with_o he_o or_o we_o must_v not_o affirm_v that_o your_o company_n here_o that_o which_o keep_v you_o from_o the_o one_o will_v exclude_v you_o from_o the_o other_o i_o mean_v those_o thing_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v that_o make_v you_o unmeet_a to_o partake_v of_o his_o table_n at_o present_a will_v make_v you_o unmeet_a to_o feast_v with_o he_o in_o his_o heavenly_a kingdom_n hereafter_o the_o term_n of_o admission_n unto_o both_o be_v the_o fit_a or_o not_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n in_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o determine_v the_o case_n with_o such_o certainty_n as_o to_o be_v no_o long_o perplex_v with_o doubt_n and_o fear_n about_o it_o 1._o the_o first_o of_o these_o question_n need_v not_o be_v long_o consider_v for_o by_o receive_v baptism_n and_o be_v present_a at_o the_o prayer_n where_o the_o creed_n be_v open_o own_v you_o make_v a_o profession_n of_o christianity_n and_o therefore_o you_o be_v thus_o far_o fit_a and_o have_v a_o right_n and_o title_n to_o come_v and_o make_v this_o profession_n still_o more_o solemn_o at_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n 2._o the_o second_o also_o be_v soon_o resolve_v whether_o you_o believe_v with_o your_o heart_n what_o you_o profess_v with_o your_o mouth_n for_o these_o doubt_n and_o fear_n which_o you_o have_v lest_o you_o shall_v receive_v the_o communion_n unworthy_o and_o thereby_o incur_v the_o divine_a displeasure_n suppose_v faith_n in_o christ_n as_o the_o lord_n and_o judge_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o you_o look_v upon_o this_o as_o one_o part_n of_o a_o christian_n duty_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v perform_v with_o care_n fear_n and_o doubt_n that_o stick_v in_o your_o mind_n hinder_v you_o but_o rather_o get_v they_o pull_v out_o by_o some_o skilful_a hand_n do_v not_o believe_v you_o be_v religious_a because_o you_o be_v scrupulous_a but_o rather_o suspect_v yourselves_o not_o to_o be_v so_o because_o you_o neglect_v the_o great_a duty_n of_o religion_n and_o of_o this_o be_v scrupulous_a above_o all_o other_o thing_n lest_o you_o offend_v god_n by_o not_o come_v to_o the_o communion_n or_o rather_o do_v not_o dare_v to_o be_v so_o bold_a and_o fearless_a in_o a_o matter_n of_o such_o great_a danger_n let_v not_o the_o fault_n of_o other_o who_o communicate_v be_v a_o stop_n to_o your_o performance_n of_o that_o duty_n that_o be_v if_o they_o sin_v one_o way_n let_v not_o that_o tempt_v you_o to_o a_o sin_n of_o another_o kind_n if_o they_o go_v wrong_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n be_v not_o you_o move_v thereby_o to_o turn_v too_o much_o to_o the_o left_a let_v not_o the_o danger_n of_o unworthy_a receive_n deter_v you_o from_o receive_v but_o only_o from_o receive_v unworthy_o of_o which_o there_o be_v the_o less_o danger_n if_o you_o be_v real_o afraid_a of_o it_o for_o that_o will_v move_v you_o to_o be_v careful_a to_o prevent_v it_o and_o remember_v that_o nothing_o will_v make_v you_o more_o unworthy_a than_o neglect_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o let_v not_o the_o thought_n of_o your_o imperfection_n hinder_v you_o for_o they_o will_v always_o hinder_v and_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a communion_n be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o be_v more_o perfect_a but_o come_v to_o it_o nay_o let_v not_o the_o breach_n of_o your_o resolution_n by_o relapse_v into_o sin_n after_o you_o have_v communicate_v keep_v you_o from_o communicate_v again_o but_o rather_o come_v the_o soon_o and_o take_v the_o first_o opportunity_n that_o be_v present_v you_o to_o renew_v your_o covenant_n with_o god_n to_o strengthen_v your_o christian_a resolution_n to_o fortify_v yourselves_o against_o temptation_n and_o to_o obtain_v assurance_n of_o a_o pardon_n for_o the_o unfaithfulness_n to_o your_o saviour_n to_o fall_v be_v not_o so_o dangerous_a as_o not_o to_o rise_v again_o present_o after_o we_o be_v fall_v much_o less_o let_v business_n hinder_v for_o if_o you_o be_v honest_o employ_v in_o honest_a business_n it_o be_v part_n of_o your_o preparation_n for_o the_o holy_a communion_n and_o let_v no_o man_n say_v he_o want_v time_n to_o fit_v himself_o to_o receive_v it_o for_o this_o be_v in_o effect_n to_o say_v he_o want_v time_n to_o live_v well_o of_o which_o if_o you_o take_v a_o constant_a care_n that_o be_v the_o main_a preparation_n and_o for_o the_o compose_v your_o mind_n and_o consider_v the_o end_n for_o which_o you_o go_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n take_v as_o much_o time_n as_o your_o condition_n of_o life_n and_o the_o circumstance_n of_o your_o condition_n will_v allow_v and_o that_o be_v sufficient_a be_v not_o hinder_v from_o the_o heavenly_a comfort_n of_o which_o you_o may_v there_o partake_v by_o a_o opinion_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o long_a examination_n of_o yourselves_o beforehand_o for_o that_o necessity_n arise_v only_o from_o long_a neglect_n of_o the_o communion_n receive_v frequent_o as_o the_o first_o christian_n do_v and_o than_o you_o will_v be_v as_o ready_a for_o this_o on_o all_o occasion_n as_o you_o be_v for_o other_o duty_n of_o holy_a worship_n for_o you_o will_v be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o state_n of_o your_o own_o soul_n and_o with_o the_o nature_n and_o end_n of_o this_o part_n of_o your_o religion_n especial_o if_o you_o take_v some_o account_n of_o yourselves_o every_o day_n which_o will_v make_v your_o account_n short_a and_o easy_a before_o the_o communion_n and_o let_v not_o dulness_n and_o indisposition_n be_v think_v a_o reason_n why_o you_o shall_v forbear_v to_o receive_v it_o but_o rather_o come_v thither_o to_o be_v quicken_v and_o if_o you_o continue_v dull_a there_o yet_o believe_v you_o have_v please_v god_n by_o do_v as_o he_o command_v though_o not_o so_o lively_a as_o you_o desire_v let_v we_o not_o hear_v any_o man_n say_v i_o have_v not_o profit_v and_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o with_o any_o kind_n of_o care_n partake_v of_o the_o holy_a communion_n
