heart_n and_o our_o own_o life_n be_v our_o charge_n and_o burden_n the_o life_n of_o other_o man_n concern_v we_o not_o be_v private_a man_n further_o they_o either_o to_o follow_v they_o be_v good_a or_o take_v heed_n of_o they_o be_v evil_a but_o to_o search_v or_o to_o be_v inquisitive_a into_o they_o be_v no_o duty_n command_v we_o but_o rather_o a_o foul_a &_o a_o base_a vice_n forbid_v of_o god_n indeed_o magistrate_n in_o their_o people_n pastor_n in_o their_o congregation_n and_o householders_n in_o their_o family_n be_v to_o search_v but_o they_o can_v search_v only_o for_o criminal_a cause_n or_o open_a actual_a sin_n but_o this_o search_n must_v be_v of_o our_o heart_n which_o no_o man_n can_v search_v but_o ourselves_o only_o few_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o inquire_v into_o other_o man_n life_n but_o every_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o search_v into_o himself_o but_o alas_o man_n do_v far_o otherwise_o they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o rot_v in_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o erect_v a_o inquisition_n over_o other_o man_n life_n &_o it_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o daily_a experience_n that_o those_o man_n who_o be_v the_o great_a searcher_n and_o pryer_n into_o other_o man_n be_v the_o neglecter_n and_o forgetter_n of_o themselves_o and_o contrariwise_o they_o who_o do_v narrow_o search_v themselves_o and_o their_o own_o way_n and_o look_v into_o the_o corner_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n do_v find_v so_o much_o work_v to_o do_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o little_o busy_v themselves_o with_o other_o man_n and_o thus_o much_o may_v suffice_v for_o that_o point_n it_o follow_v o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v the_o three_o point_n who_o must_v search_v the_o jew_n who_o be_v here_o term_v a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v &_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o be_v bid_v to_o search_v themselves_o that_o so_o upon_o their_o repentance_n they_o may_v be_v belove_v where_o we_o may_v see_v the_o unspeakable_a love_n of_o god_n and_o his_o wonderful_a mercy_n offer_v grace_n unto_o such_o man_n as_o be_v altogether_o unworthy_a of_o it_o god_n child_n be_v by_o nature_n like_o other_o man_n and_o god_n find_v nothing_o in_o they_o why_o to_o respect_v they_o above_o other_o but_o even_o of_o his_o own_o mercy_n make_v they_o worthy_a who_o of_o themselves_o be_v not_o therefore_o how_o worthy_a be_v that_o god_n to_o have_v all_o the_o love_n of_o our_o heart_n who_o love_v we_o when_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v but_o let_v we_o examine_v more_o particular_o why_o god_n do_v call_v the_o jew_n a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v i_o answer_v god_n have_v bless_v they_o above_o other_o nation_n he_o give_v they_o his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o thereby_o make_v they_o his_o people_n &_o commit_v to_o their_o trust_n his_o holy_a word_n and_o oracle_n but_o 2._o he_o deal_v not_o so_o with_o other_o nation_n neither_o have_v the_o heathen_a knowledge_n of_o his_o law_n beside_o all_o this_o they_o have_v a_o better_a 20._o land_n than_o other_o about_o they_o it_o flow_v with_o milk_n and_o honey_n that_o be_v with_o all_o commodity_n &_o delight_n and_o though_o their_o country_n be_v but_o little_a yet_o themselves_o so_o populous_a and_o so_o powerful_a that_o while_o they_o please_v god_n no_o enemy_n dare_v set_v upon_o they_o thus_o for_o soul_n and_o body_n they_o be_v every_o way_n a_o nation_n bless_v of_o god_n a_o people_n belove_v of_o god_n above_o all_o other_o now_o how_o do_v this_o people_n thus_o
belove_v of_o their_o god_n requite_v this_o his_o love_n which_o they_o have_v no_o more_o deserve_v than_o any_o other_o nation_n certain_o as_o they_o deserve_v it_o not_o afore_o they_o have_v it_o so_o they_o requite_v it_o not_o when_o they_o have_v it_o but_o requite_v this_o love_n of_o god_n with_o sin_n with_o rebellion_n and_o with_o disobedience_n they_o tempt_v he_o they_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n they_o presume_v of_o his_o mercy_n &_o prove_v a_o most_o stubborn_a and_o stifnecked_a people_n a_o froward_a generation_n moses_n partly_o see_v this_o in_o his_o own_o experience_n &_o better_a discern_v it_o in_o the_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n and_o therefore_o wonder_v at_o this_o their_o wickedness_n he_o cry_v out_o do_v you_o thus_o requite_v the_o lord_n o_o foolish_a people_n &_o unwise_a 5_o thus_o that_o be_v with_o sin_n &_o disobedience_n which_o be_v the_o only_a mean_n to_o displease_v the_o lord_n &_o to_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n for_o this_o cause_n they_o be_v worthy_o call_v a_o foolish_a and_o unkind_a people_n by_o moses_n and_o here_o by_o the_o prophet_n a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v namely_o for_o their_o unthankefulnes_n and_o unkindness_n which_o be_v such_o as_o they_o not_o only_o be_v slack_v and_o careless_a in_o performance_n of_o such_o duty_n as_o god_n require_v but_o even_o multiply_v their_o sin_n &_o commit_v those_o foul_a rebellion_n which_o his_o soul_n hate_v and_o among_o many_o the_o prophet_n here_o in_o this_o chapter_n note_v three_o of_o their_o great_a sin_n for_o which_o they_o be_v a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v covetousness_n cruelty_n and_o deceit_n all_o which_o be_v the_o more_o heinous_a and_o intolerable_a because_o they_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o their_o prince_n their_o ruler_n and_o their_o priest_n who_o shall_v have_v be_v light_n and_o example_n to_o the_o rest_n now_o although_o every_o sin_n in_o itself_o be_v of_o that_o ill_a desert_n as_o it_o be_v able_a to_o cast_v we_o out_o of_o god_n favour_n and_o deprive_v we_o of_o his_o love_n yet_o behold_v here_o god_n complain_v not_o upon_o a_o little_a cause_n but_o for_o wonderful_a &_o exceed_a unthankfulness_n &_o unkindness_n in_o they_o who_o of_o all_o other_o shall_v have_v love_v the_o lord_n as_o a_o man_n care_v not_o for_o hard_a usage_n from_o he_o who_o he_o esteem_v not_o but_o a_o little_a unkindness_n do_v great_o grieve_v a_o man_n from_o he_o who_o be_v love_v and_o respect_v so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n he_o love_v not_o the_o gentile_n as_o he_o do_v the_o jew_n neither_o be_v he_o so_o bountiful_a unto_o they_o and_o therefore_o 30._o as_o we_o may_v see_v though_o they_o live_v always_o in_o ignorance_n and_o continue_v always_o in_o disobedience_n yet_o the_o text_n say_v the_o time_n of_o that_o ignorance_n god_n regard_v not_o but_o when_o as_o the_o jew_n his_o own_o people_n who_o he_o choose_v out_o of_o all_o people_n &_o bestow_v his_o love_n upon_o they_o and_o make_v his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n with_o they_o when_o they_o become_v unkind_a unthankful_a forgetful_a stubborn_a and_o rebellious_a that_o cause_v the_o lord_n even_o to_o complain_v of_o the_o indignity_n and_o to_o cry_v out_o by_o moses_n do_v you_o thus_o requite_v the_o lord_n o_o foolish_a people_n &_o unwise_a and_o hereby_o the_o prophet_n o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v &_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o man_n but_o if_o he_o be_v ask_v what_o he_o think_v of_o this_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n he_o will_v answer_v that_o they_o be_v a_o most_o vile_a &_o wicked_a people_n a_o froward_a generation_n and_o that_o they_o be_v worthy_a to_o taste_v deep_o of_o all_o god_n plague_n who_o so_o far_o abuse_v his_o love_n and_o mercy_n but_o what_o do_v this_o belong_v to_o they_o alone_o and_o be_v israel_n only_o a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v nay_o i_o may_v cry_v out_o with_o as_o good_a cause_n o_o england_n a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v for_o god_n have_v be_v as_o good_a a_o god_n to_o we_o as_o he_o be_v to_o they_o and_o we_o have_v be_v as_o unkind_a a_o people_n to_o he_o as_o they_o be_v to_o he_o but_o that_o i_o may_v be_v free_a from_o discredit_v our_o nation_n and_o from_o defile_v my_o own_o nest_n let_v we_o prove_v both_o these_o point_n and_o lay_v they_o open_v to_o the_o view_n of_o the_o world_n 1_o first_o therefore_o the_o same_o mercy_n and_o far_o great_a have_v be_v pour_v &_o heap_v upon_o we_o he_o have_v call_v we_o out_o of_o the_o darkness_n first_o of_o heathenism_n &_o then_o of_o popery_n his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n he_o have_v confirm_v with_o we_o his_o treasure_n of_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n he_o have_v impart_v to_o we_o his_o holy_a word_n never_o better_a preach_v and_o the_o mystery_n thereof_o never_o more_o plain_o open_v since_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o as_o we_o have_v religion_n so_o we_o have_v it_o under_o a_o religious_a prince_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o these_o blessing_n of_o salvation_n we_o enjoy_v not_o in_o secret_a or_o by_o stealth_n but_o we_o have_v it_o countenance_v by_o authority_n so_o that_o religion_n be_v not_o bare_o allow_v but_o even_o as_o it_o be_v thrust_v upon_o man_n beside_o all_o this_o we_o have_v a_o land_n also_o that_o flow_v with_o milk_n &_o honey_n it_o be_v plentiful_a in_o all_o good_a thing_n we_o have_v liberty_n &_o peace_n under_o a_o peaceable_a prince_n and_o the_o companion_n of_o peace_n prosperity_n plenty_n health_n wealth_n corn_n wool_n gold_n silver_n abundance_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o may_v please_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n thus_o have_v god_n deserve_v the_o love_n of_o england_n 2_o but_o now_o england_n how_o have_v thou_o requite_v this_o kindness_n of_o the_o lord_n certain_o even_o with_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o unkindness_n that_o be_v with_o more_o and_o great_a sin_n than_o ever_o israel_n do_v so_o that_o if_o moses_n speak_v true_a of_o they_o then_o may_v our_o moses_n much_o more_o true_o cry_v out_o against_o england_n do_v thou_o thus_o requite_v the_o lord_n thou_o foolish_a people_n and_o if_o this_o prophet_n say_v thus_o of_o israel_n for_o three_o sin_n then_o may_v it_o be_v say_v of_o england_n for_o 300_o sin_n o_o england_n a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v for_o thou_o have_v multiply_v thy_o transgression_n above_o they_o of_o israel_n even_o as_o though_o thou_o have_v resolve_v with_o thyself_o the_o more_o god_n kindness_n be_v heap_v on_o thou_o the_o more_o to_o multiply_v thy_o sin_n against_o he_o for_o thou_o england_n as_o thou_o have_v requite_v the_o lord_n with_o sin_n so_o not_o with_o a_o few_o sin_n or_o small_a sin_n or_o sin_n which_o hardly_o can_v have_v be_v prevent_v for_o that_o have_v be_v a_o matter_n of_o some_o excuse_n or_o not_o of_o so_o great_a complaint_n but_o thy_o sin_n be_v many_o and_o grievous_a and_o capital_a and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o wilful_a and_o affect_v even_o as_o though_o god_n have_v deserve_v evil_a of_o we_o and_o that_o therefore_o we_o ought_v malicious_o to_o requite_v he_o if_o any_o man_n make_v doubt_n of_o this_o and_o therefore_o think_v i_o speak_v too_o hardly_o of_o our_o church_n i_o will_v then_o deal_v plain_o and_o particular_o and_o rip_v up_o the_o sore_n of_o our_o nation_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v heal_v to_o the_o bottom_n the_o common_a sin_n of_o england_n wherewith_o the_o lord_n be_v requite_v be_v these_o first_o ignorance_n of_o god_n will_v and_o worship_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o that_o compel_a ignorance_n in_o many_o corner_n of_o our_o land_n which_o be_v to_o be_v pity_v because_o they_o want_v the_o mean_n but_o wilful_a and_o affect_a ignorance_n man_n be_v ignorant_a even_o because_o they_o will_v be_v ignorant_a mean_n of_o knowledge_n be_v never_o so_o plentiful_a and_o yet_o never_o more_o gross_a ignorance_n be_v not_o he_o wilful_o blind_a who_o will_v not_o open_v his_o eye_n in_o the_o light_n and_o can_v there_o be_v any_o darkness_n at_o noon_n day_n but_o it_o must_v be_v wilful_a but_o our_o nation_n be_v dark_a and_o blind_a in_o the_o sunshine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o gross_o ignorant_a when_o the_o gospel_n beat_v their_o ear_n and_o light_n shine_v round_o about_o they_o so_o as_o if_o they_o close_v not_o their_o eye_n and_o stop_v not_o their_o ear_n they_o can_v not_o but_o both_o hear_v &_o see_v who_o will_v look_v for_o ignorance_n after_o 35_o year_n preach_v &_o yet_o many_o be_v as_o ignorant_a as_o if_o they_o have_v be_v bear_v &_o bring_v up_o under_o popery_n so_o that_o
better_o cause_n may_v it_o be_v say_v to_o we_o as_o to_o the_o jew_n o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v look_v at_o the_o outward_a face_n of_o our_o church_n at_o the_o sign_n of_o god_n love_n which_o be_v among_o we_o and_o at_o god_n deal_v with_o we_o and_o behold_v we_o be_v a_o most_o beautiful_a church_n a_o glorious_a nation_n a_o nation_n to_o be_v admire_v and_o wonder_v at_o but_o look_v at_o the_o life_n of_o our_o ordinary_a professor_n look_v at_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o our_o requite_v of_o god_n love_n and_o we_o be_v a_o people_n of_o sodom_n as_o full_a of_o iniquity_n as_o they_o be_v who_o sin_n be_v so_o many_o so_o rife_o and_o so_o ripe_a that_o at_o the_o last_o they_o will_v even_o bring_v down_o fire_n &_o brimstone_n or_o some_o other_o strange_a judgement_n upon_o we_o if_o repentance_n do_v not_o prevent_v it_o or_o the_o cry_n and_o prayer_n of_o holy_a man_n stay_v not_o god_n hand_n so_o then_o let_v we_o all_o here_o assemble_v grant_v &_o confess_v that_o we_o be_v a_o nation_n so_o far_o from_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v as_o that_o we_o be_v most_o worthy_a to_o be_v hate_v &_o to_o have_v all_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n pour_v upon_o us._n now_o then_o be_v we_o so_o and_o shall_v we_o continue_v so_o still_o nay_o that_o be_v the_o worst_a and_o most_o wretched_a of_o all_o then_o let_v every_o one_o of_o we_o learn_v this_o duty_n enter_v into_o ourselves_o search_v our_o heart_n and_o life_n that_o they_o may_v lie_v open_a to_o our_o own_o sight_n to_o the_o confusion_n of_o we_o in_o ourselves_o that_o in_o god_n by_o repentance_n we_o may_v be_v raise_v up_o our_o sin_n lie_v open_a before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n and_o stink_v in_o his_o presence_n and_o and_o cry_v for_o vengeance_n and_o before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n angel_n who_o bewail_v it_o and_o before_o the_o face_n of_o the_o devil_n who_o rejoice_v in_o our_o confusion_n and_o shall_v they_o lie_v hide_v only_o to_o ourselves_o now_o then_o if_o we_o will_v have_v they_o hide_v from_o god_n and_o stop_v the_o cry_n that_o they_o make_v against_o we_o and_o keep_v they_o from_o satan_n who_o accuse_v we_o for_o they_o we_o must_v so_o search_v ourselves_o that_o they_o may_v lie_v open_a to_o our_o own_o heart_n remember_v thou_o thy_o sin_n and_o god_n will_v forget_v they_o lay_v they_o open_v before_o thy_o own_o face_n and_o god_n will_v hide_v they_o from_o he_o write_v they_o up_o for_o thy_o own_o self_n and_o god_n will_v blot_v they_o out_o of_o his_o remembrance_n but_o if_o contrariwise_o thou_o hide_v they_o then_o assure_v thyself_o the_o more_o thou_o hide_v and_o bury_v they_o the_o more_o open_a do_v they_o lie_v in_o the_o face_n of_o god_n and_o then_o what_o will_v follow_v but_o that_o they_o will_v all_o be_v disclose_v at_o the_o last_o day_n to_o thy_o eternal_a confusion_n therefore_o again_o and_o again_o i_o exhort_v you_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n search_v yourselves_o find_v out_o your_o sin_n confess_v they_o to_o god_n free_o and_o ingenious_o confess_v their_o desert_n to_o be_v hell_n and_o damnation_n humble_a your_o heart_n to_o god_n cry_v and_o call_v for_o pardon_n as_o for_o life_n and_o death_n purpose_n and_o promise_v to_o leave_v they_o begin_v a_o new_a course_n of_o life_n believe_v steadfast_o and_o doubt_v not_o of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n continue_v in_o that_o faith_n and_o that_o new_a course_n of_o life_n so_o may_v england_n prevent_v god_n judgement_n and_o quench_v that_o great_a action_n of_o unkindness_n which_o god_n have_v against_o they_o and_o become_v a_o nation_n as_o worthy_a upon_o their_o faith_n and_o repentance_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v belove_v as_o for_o their_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n they_o have_v be_v of_o all_o nation_n of_o the_o earth_n admire_v hitherto_o of_o the_o three_o general_a point_n 4_o the_o four_o general_a point_n in_o this_o exhortation_n be_v the_o time_n limit_v they_o when_o they_o shall_v search_v before_o the_o decree_n come_v forth_o etc._n etc._n as_o though_o the_o prophet_n shall_v say_v israel_n repent_v before_o god_n execute_v his_o judgement_n on_o thou_o for_o behold_v the_o gracious_a deal_n of_o god_n man_n sin_v his_o sin_n deserve_v plague_n but_o god_n present_o plague_v not_o but_o defer_v it_o he_o put_v a_o time_n betwixt_o the_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n ordinary_o this_o he_o do_v to_o show_v his_o mercy_n to_o mankind_n because_o that_o he_o will_v not_o the_o prophet_n compare_v the_o lord_n to_o a_o mother_n for_o as_o she_o conceive_v the_o fruit_n in_o her_o womb_n and_o bear_v it_o a_o long_a time_n ere_o she_o bring_v it_o out_o so_o the_o lord_n after_o a_o man_n sin_n or_o a_o people_n sin_n conceive_v that_o be_v ordain_v and_o decree_v a_o judgement_n for_o it_o but_o he_o keep_v it_o up_o and_o all_o that_o while_o he_o hear_v it_o but_o as_o she_o when_o her_o time_n be_v come_v than_o travail_n and_o bring_v forth_o so_o when_o the_o time_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v be_v come_v and_o still_o sin_n be_v not_o repent_v of_o then_o his_o justice_n travail_v to_o be_v deliver_v of_o that_o judgement_n which_o mercy_n have_v keep_v up_o so_o long_a a_o time_n thus_o the_o old_a world_n have_v a_o hundred_o &_o twenty_o year_n give_v they_o for_o time_n of_o repentance_n all_o that_o while_n god_n be_v in_o conceive_v at_o last_o when_o there_o sin_n be_v ripe_a and_o no_o hope_n of_o amendment_n then_o god_n travel_v and_o bring_v forth_o a_o fearful_a birth_n namely_o the_o universal_a flood_n to_o wash_v away_o and_o take_v revenge_n upon_o the_o universal_a iniquity_n of_o those_o time_n so_o many_o hundred_o year_n he_o give_v unto_o the_o jew_n long_o he_o be_v in_o conceive_v their_o destruction_n and_o oftentimes_o he_o have_v it_o at_o the_o bring_v forth_o as_o in_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n and_o under_o antiochus_n yet_o his_o mercy_n stay_v it_o and_o still_o he_o travail_v long_o tell_v they_o here_o by_o the_o prophet_n that_o yet_o the_o decree_n be_v not_o come_v forth_o though_o it_o be_v conceive_v but_o at_o last_o when_o israel_n will_v not_o repent_v but_o grow_v worse_a and_o worse_o as_o in_o christ_n his_o time_n than_o he_o can_v contain_v no_o long_o but_o travel_v indeed_o and_o though_o it_o be_v with_o grief_n yet_o he_o have_v bring_v forth_o and_o what_o a_o most_o fearful_a birth_n even_o a_o utter_a disolation_n of_o that_o kingdom_n and_o country_n of_o their_o city_n and_o temple_n and_o a_o dispertion_n of_o their_o nation_n over_o all_o the_o world_n but_o as_o a_o woman_n at_o last_o be_v deliver_v with_o danger_n and_o difficulty_n with_o pain_n and_o sorrow_n so_o the_o lord_n long_o conceive_v but_o at_o last_o bring_v forth_o his_o judgement_n yet_o it_o be_v with_o grief_n and_o unwillingness_n and_o he_o be_v loath_a as_o it_o be_v and_o much_o aggrieve_v to_o execute_v his_o most_o just_a judgement_n on_o those_o who_o have_v profess_v his_o name_n he_o often_o touch_v the_o jew_n a_o little_a and_o as_o in_o the_o jew_n once_o his_o own_o people_n for_o he_o have_v destroy_v their_o land_n with_o a_o irrecoverable_a destruction_n and_o smite_v their_o posterity_n with_o a_o blindness_n of_o mind_n of_o merit_n when_o once_o he_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n so_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o our_o so_o many_o and_o foul_a pollution_n above_o he_o shall_v beat_v down_o all_o proud_a conceit_n of_o our_o own_o goodness_n when_o we_o appear_v before_o god._n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o papist_n who_o thus_o magnify_v their_o own_o merit_n do_v seldom_o or_o never_o enter_v into_o earnest_a consideration_n of_o their_o own_o infirmity_n do_v seldom_o persent_a themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n for_o if_o they_o do_v then_o doubtless_o the_o least_o sight_n of_o their_o least_o pollution_n will_v make_v they_o far_o from_o ever_o think_v of_o their_o own_o merit_n supererogation_n they_o also_o tell_v we_o of_o work_n of_o supererogation_n but_o it_o seem_v here_o this_o holy_a prophet_n have_v none_o of_o they_o and_o they_o teach_v a_o man_n may_v in_o this_o life_n life_n perfect_o fulfil_v the_o law_n but_o who_o can_v do_v it_o iâ—_n not_o minister_n and_o what_o minister_n if_o not_o extraordinary_a prophet_n and_o yet_o isaiah_n the_o first_o and_o chief_a of_o they_o exclaim_v here_o in_o pitiful_a manner_n against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_v themselves_o and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n all_o in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o want_n his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o neighbour_n and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charatie_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o a_o minister_n though_o all_o the_o other_o be_v require_v to_o make_v he_o complete_a the_o want_n of_o they_o may_v condemn_v he_o before_o man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n which_o present_o check_n he_o before_o god_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n the_o conclusion_n than_o be_v to_o every_o minister_n that_o if_o he_o have_v all_o the_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o good_a quality_n he_o will_v cry_v out_o in_o far_o more_o pitiful_a manner_n they_o here_o the_o prophet_n do_v woe_n be_v 〈◊〉_d i_o be_o undoâ—â—_n because_o i_o be_o a_o â—an_v of_o pollute_a lip_n it_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a pollution_n lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_o complain_v of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n own_o also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n &_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interpretar_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n &_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o sin_n for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n â—â—â—ling_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a example_n or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v &_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v
confess_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v confequent_o that_o he_o must_v know_v they_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o for_o else_o he_o sin_n can_v confess_v they_o and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n command_v a_o pastor_n to_o know_v his_o flock_n he_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o flock_n and_o know_v which_o be_v his_o flock_n or_o have_v a_o general_a must_v needs_o know_v they_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o they_o must_v discover_v &_o confess_v they_o unto_o he_o or_o else_o 〈◊〉_d not_o possible_a he_o shall_v perfect_o knoâ—e_v their_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n so_o stubborn_a &_o disobedient_a as_o the_o jew_n be_v be_v something_o touch_v with_o their_o pollution_n minister_n even_o the_o best_a be_v man_n and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n as_o they_o be_v man_n the_o nature_n of_o which_o corruption_n be_v to_o apprehend_v any_o evil_n where_o ever_o it_o find_v it_o and_o to_o partake_v with_o it_o regeneration_n qualifi_v &_o abate_v this_o corruption_n but_o take_v it_o not_o away_o perfect_o in_o this_o life_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o a_o minister_n live_v among_o evil_a people_n can_v but_o be_v somewhat_o stain_v with_o their_o pollution_n of_o what_o sort_n soever_o they_o be_v insomuch_o as_o it_o be_v often_o see_v that_o one_o know_v to_o be_v otherwise_o dispose_v of_o himself_o be_v find_v to_o be_v dispose_v to_o this_o or_o that_o evil_a by_o live_v among_o a_o people_n so_o dispose_v and_o again_o that_o a_o minister_n in_o such_o a_o place_n and_o among_o such_o people_n free_a from_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n remove_v to_o another_o place_n be_v there_o find_v more_o or_o less_o taint_v with_o they_o because_o they_o abound_v among_o the_o people_n and_o yet_o further_o that_o a_o minister_n know_v to_o be_v faithful_a painful_a and_o zealous_a &_o come_v to_o a_o disobedient_a stubborn_a froward_a or_o profane_a &_o dissolute_a people_n his_o faith_n be_v weaken_v double_a his_o zeal_n &_o courage_n abate_v god_n grace_n in_o he_o dull_v &_o much_o decay_a godly_a minister_n do_v daily_o complain_v hereof_o and_o experience_n every_o where_o show_v it_o too_o true_a out_o of_o this_o we_o may_v learn_v something_o both_o for_o our_o instruction_n and_o for_o our_o conversation_n for_o our_o instruction_n it_o here_o appear_v be_v how_o wicked_a and_o wretched_a the_o corruption_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v which_o can_v but_o receive_v some_o contagion_n from_o the_o pollution_n of_o those_o with_o who_o we_o live_v for_o this_o be_v so_o not_o only_o in_o they_o who_o carry_v a_o loose_a hand_n over_o themselves_o but_o even_o in_o such_o as_o look_v most_o narrow_o unto_o their_o step_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n who_o be_v a_o man_n of_o more_o than_o ordinary_a sanctification_n how_o little_a cause_n therefore_o have_v any_o man_n to_o extol_v nature_n and_o how_o much_o less_o cause_n the_o schoolman_n and_o some_o other_o papist_n to_o give_v the_o least_o commendation_n to_o our_o pure_a natural_n for_o if_o nature_n rectify_v by_o grace_n be_v so_o hardly_o keep_v within_o compass_n alas_o how_o outrageous_a &_o perverse_a be_v it_o when_o it_o reign_v without_o controlment_n and_o for_o our_o further_a instruction_n here_o we_o may_v see_v of_o what_o a_o creep_a have_v and_o encroach_a nature_n sin_n be_v which_o like_o a_o secret_a venom_n in_o the_o natural_a body_n so_o it_o in_o the_o politic_a body_n rest_v not_o in_o the_o place_n or_o party_n poison_v but_o close_o creep_v &_o diffuse_v itself_o into_o every_o part_n and_o member_n of_o the_o whole_a it_o creep_v from_o man_n to_o man_n yea_o from_o a_o evil_a man_n to_o a_o good_a from_o the_o worst_a man_n to_o the_o best_a from_o profane_a man_n to_o godly_a minister_n and_o as_o from_o public_a person_n as_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n it_o descend_v minister_n visible_o and_o the_o example_n of_o their_o evil_a life_n be_v palpable_o scandalous_a so_o from_o the_o people_n to_o the_o magistrate_n or_o minister_n it_o creep_v close_o &_o ascend_v in_o more_o secret_a and_o insensible_a manner_n yet_o in_o the_o effect_n it_o be_v too_o sensible_a for_o it_o be_v always_o see_v that_o they_o be_v something_o touch_v with_o their_o people_n pollution_n sin_n be_v not_o only_o as_o a_o poison_n spread_v from_o the_o heart_n to_o all_o part_n from_o the_o minister_n to_o the_o people_n but_o as_o a_o gangreve_v if_o it_o begin_v in_o the_o foot_n will_v without_o speedy_a prevention_n spread_v privy_o to_o the_o hart_n so_o sin_n show_v itself_o even_o from_o the_o beginning_n people_n to_o the_o minister_n so_o great_a cause_n be_v there_o for_o all_o man_n to_o stop_v sin_n in_o the_o beginning_n to_o break_v it_o in_o the_o egg_n to_o give_v water_n no_o passage_n no_o not_o a_o little_a for_o let_v this_o gangreve_v begin_v at_o the_o foot_n it_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n for_o our_o conversation_n we_o be_v here_o conversation_n teach_v first_o if_o a_o minister_n by_o his_o people_n wherein_o let_v we_o first_o of_o all_o observe_v the_o connexion_n and_o dependence_n of_o these_o two_o cause_n one_o upon_o another_o for_o as_o they_o be_v both_o joint_o the_o righteousness_n temperance_n and_o judgement_n to_o come_v the_o text_n say_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n he_o tremble_v and_o for_o the_o three_o we_o see_v daily_o wicked_a man_n endure_v not_o god_n presence_n sacrament_n in_o the_o church_n for_o nothing_o be_v more_o troublesome_a unto_o they_o than_o many_o sermon_n often_o pray_v and_o much_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n &_o therefore_o they_o never_o come_v to_o the_o church_n nor_o receive_v oft_o than_o the_o law_n lay_v upon_o they_o but_o further_a than_o that_o as_o the_o psalmist_n say_v they_o never_o call_v upon_o god_n but_o as_o judgement_n for_o the_o last_o that_o they_o fear_v and_o abhor_v above_o all_o they_o wish_v in_o their_o hart_n it_o may_v never_o be_v and_o therefore_o s._n paul_n make_v it_o a_o token_n of_o a_o true_a believer_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n to_o love_v and_o look_v for_o the_o appear_v of_o jesus_n christ_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v 8._o that_o even_o so_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n unhumbled_a people_n and_o teach_v they_o the_o gospel_n which_o never_o know_v the_o law_n here_o the_o fiery_a coal_n be_v use_v but_o the_o lip_n be_v not_o touch_v that_o be_v good_a doctrine_n teach_v but_o not_o well_o apply_v for_o that_o the_o law_n shall_v first_o be_v lay_v to_o their_o conscience_n other_o beat_v all_o upon_o the_o law_n when_o it_o may_v be_v their_o hearer_n be_v a_o people_n sufficient_o cast_v down_o and_o have_v more_o need_n to_o be_v raise_v up_o with_o the_o sweet_a comfort_n of_o the_o gospel_n other_o use_v to_o lay_v open_a the_o nakedness_n of_o the_o court_n in_o the_o country_n and_o to_o reprove_v the_o fault_n of_o prince_n and_o great_a magistrate_n before_o the_o common_a people_n who_o have_v more_o need_n of_o the_o catechism_n other_o bring_v the_o catechism_n or_o point_n of_o ordinary_a instruction_n into_o the_o court_n where_o the_o duty_n of_o king_n and_o councillor_n shall_v be_v teach_v in_o all_o plainness_n and_o sincerity_n other_o bring_v their_o new_a opinion_n or_o controversall_a point_n unto_o popular_a audience_n which_o indeed_o be_v fit_a for_o the_o school_n other_o busy_a themselves_o about_o ceremony_n when_o the_o substance_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o be_v lose_v all_o these_o have_v it_o may_v be_v the_o coal_n of_o fire_n but_o it_o be_v misapply_v and_o not_o apply_v to_o the_o pollute_a lip_n let_v all_o minister_n therefore_o learn_v this_o point_n of_o wisdom_n of_o the_o angel_n to_o apply_v the_o medicine_n of_o their_o doctrine_n to_o the_o time_n person_n and_o place_n which_o be_v infect_v so_o shall_v they_o be_v sure_a not_o to_o take_v pain_n in_o vain_a and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o consolation_n it_o follow_v in_o the_o sufficient_o humble_v he_o and_o then_o to_o labour_v to_o persuade_v his_o conscience_n upon_o good_a ground_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o those_o sin_n by_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v the_o way_n that_o god_n use_v and_o devise_v this_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n that_o can_v fail_v some_o think_v that_o all_o trouble_n of_o mind_n be_v nothing_o but_o melancholy_a and_o therefore_o psalm_n think_v nothing_o needs_o but_o physic_n and_o outward_a comfort_n but_o he_o that_o consider_v in_o what_o case_n the_o prophet_n here_o be_v or_o david_n when_o he_o make_v the_o 6._o the_o 32._o or_o the_o 51._o psalm_n will_v be_v of_o another_o mind_n and_o will_v find_v that_o nothing_o can_v proper_o trouble_v the_o mind_n but_o sin_n therefore_o as_o the_o wise_a physician_n in_o his_o cure_n first_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o endeavour_n to_o take_v it_o away_o so_o the_o good_a physician_n of_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o of_o all_o search_n into_o the_o cause_n of_o his_o sickness_n that_o be_v his_o sin_n and_o must_v take_v they_o away_o which_o if_o they_o do_v not_o than_o all_o their_o labour_n be_v lose_v for_o all_o the_o company_n music_n recreation_n wine_n diet_n nay_o all_o worldly_a comfort_n &_o delight_n if_o it_o be_v the_o advancement_n to_o a_o kingdom_n can_v so_o much_o comfort_v the_o distress_a soul_n of_o a_o sinner_n as_o this_o voice_n of_o a_o minister_n speak_v from_o god_n upon_o good_a ground_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o now_o to_o lay_v down_o what_o be_v those_o true_a and_o good_a ground_n whereupon_o a_o minister_n may_v conscience_n safe_o and_o comfortable_o pronounce_v pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o a_o sinner_n belong_v proper_o to_o another_o place_n in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o here_o observe_v repent_v how_o the_o lord_n afore_o he_o renew_v the_o prophet_n commission_n or_o send_v he_o to_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n first_o humble_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n and_o then_o upon_o his_o repentance_n give_v he_o pardon_v teach_v we_o that_o no_o minister_n be_v well_o qualify_v to_o the_o holy_a duty_n of_o the_o ministry_n unless_o he_o have_v true_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_n and_o have_v obtain_v pardon_n and_o mercy_n in_o the_o messiah_n minister_n labour_n for_o qualification_n but_o the_o true_a minister_n of_o god_n will_v labour_v for_o this_o qualification_n above_o all_o other_o for_o doubtless_o he_o shall_v pronounce_v most_o powerful_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n to_o other_o to_o who_o conscience_n god_n have_v pronounce_v pardon_n of_o his_o own_o in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o prophet_n be_v to_o be_v comfort_v before_o they_o he_o go_v this_o new_a embassage_n the_o lord_n be_v so_o careful_a for_o he_o that_o rather_o than_o he_o be_v not_o comfort_v if_o there_o be_v no_o man_n to_o do_v it_o a_o angel_n shall_v be_v send_v to_o be_v his_o comforter_n &_o if_o there_o be_v not_o another_o prophet_n to_o gift_n give_v they_o of_o those_o to_o who_o they_o be_v send_v but_o they_o expect_v their_o maintenance_n from_o the_o king_n their_o own_o master_n so_o the_o maintenance_n which_o the_o world_n shall_v give_v minister_n be_v like_a gift_n give_v to_o ambassador_n if_o it_o come_v it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o they_o deserve_v if_o it_o come_v not_o yet_o will_v faithful_a minister_n do_v their_o duty_n and_o expect_v their_o payment_n from_o their_o king_n and_o master_n god_n who_o they_o be_v and_o who_o they_o serve_v three_o if_o they_o be_v god_n ambassador_n abuse_v send_v by_o he_o and_o come_v from_o and_o for_o he_o then_o let_v all_o such_o as_o either_o condemn_v or_o any_o way_n injury_n they_o be_v assure_v that_o as_o god_n be_v mighty_a &_o powerful_a so_o he_o will_v mighty_o revenge_v it_o there_o be_v never_o king_n so_o poor_a or_o weak_a but_o think_v himself_o strong_a enough_o to_o revenge_v any_o wrong_n offer_v it_o to_o his_o ambassador_n and_o shall_v god_n suffer_v so_o foul_a a_o wickedness_n to_o lie_v unpunished_a nay_o they_o and_o their_o posterity_n shall_v smart_v for_o it_o let_v ahab_n and_o jezabel_n etc._n and_o julian_n say_v master_n credit_n in_o all_o his_o course_n last_o if_o they_o be_v god_n embassador_n it_o then_o must_v they_o not_o deliver_v their_o own_o fancy_n or_o invention_n but_o that_o message_n they_o receive_v and_o as_o they_o receive_v it_o so_o must_v they_o deliver_v it_o and_o if_o they_o do_v their_o duty_n faithful_o this_o doctrine_n be_v comfortable_a to_o they_o they_o may_v take_v pain_n with_o joy_n they_o have_v a_o master_n will_v reward_v they_o they_o may_v speak_v free_o so_o it_o be_v with_o discretion_n they_o have_v a_o master_n will_v make_v it_o good_a they_o may_v stand_v bold_o in_o the_o face_n of_o their_o enemy_n they_o have_v a_o master_n will_v defend_v they_o and_o every_o faithful_a minister_n may_v say_v to_o himself_o i_o will_v do_v my_o duty_n and_o deliver_v my_o embassage_n he_o who_o i_o serve_v and_o who_o i_o be_o he_o who_o send_v i_o and_o for_o who_o i_o come_v will_v bear_v i_o out_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o inquiry_n which_o god_n make_v and_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o now_o let_v we_o see_v the_o answer_n which_o the_o prophet_n make_v in_o these_o word_n i_o then_o i_o say_v here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o the_o prophet_n after_o he_o be_v comfort_v by_o god_n and_o have_v his_o sin_n forgive_v then_o answer_v here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o first_o mark_v here_o what_o a_o great_a duty_n change_n be_v wrought_v on_o the_o sudden_a send_v i_o so_o great_a a_o matter_n be_v it_o for_o a_o minister_n to_o have_v his_o sin_n forgive_v and_o to_o feel_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o his_o soul_n and_o conscience_n here_o therefore_o we_o have_v a_o answer_n to_o two_o great_a question_n mind_n often_o move_v in_o the_o world_n first_o many_o will_v have_v quietness_n of_o mind_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o can_v attain_v unto_o it_o if_o they_o ask_v how_o they_o may_v to_o they_o i_o answer_v here_o be_v the_o way_n seek_v it_o not_o in_o worldly_a wealth_n carnal_a pleasure_n nor_o humane_a learning_n in_o company_n nor_o recreation_n but_o seek_v it_o in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o pardon_v of_o thy_o sin_n and_o thou_o shall_v not_o miss_v of_o it_o thus_o shall_v thou_o have_v comfort_n in_o thy_o own_o conscience_n courage_n before_o man_n and_o boldness_n towards_o god_n second_o many_o student_n in_o divinity_n will_v glad_o be_v minister_n and_o do_v sin_n much_o honour_n to_o the_o call_v but_o they_o find_v a_o fear_n and_o shrink_n in_o themselves_o and_o thereby_o a_o unwillingness_n to_o venture_v upon_o it_o if_o they_o ask_v how_o they_o may_v amend_v this_o i_o answer_v or_o rather_o the_o example_n of_o his_o prophet_n answer_v for_o i_o let_v that_o man_n set_v himself_o in_o god_n presence_n enter_v into_o himself_o search_v his_o conscience_n find_v out_o his_o sin_n confess_v and_o bewail_v they_o to_o god_n crave_v pardon_n in_o christ_n blood_n &_o grace_n to_o leave_v they_o &_o cease_v not_o till_o he_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n spirit_n sound_v in_o his_o conscience_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o then_o when_o god_n shall_v ask_v who_o shall_v i_o send_v thou_o will_v answer_v ready_o and_o with_o joy_n here_o be_o i_o send_v i_o and_o again_o many_o be_v drive_v from_o sin_n this_o call_n to_o behold_v the_o contempt_n and_o reproach_n and_o danger_n which_o belong_v unto_o it_o but_o let_v those_o man_n mark_v here_o the_o phrase_n of_o this_o holy_a prophet_n when_o god_n ask_v who_o shall_v i_o send_v he_o may_v have_v answer_v lord_n i_o will_v go_v but_o such_o disgrace_n and_o discouragement_n do_v because_o he_o see_v he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n he_o have_v he_o and_o his_o commission_n on_o his_o side_n &_o he_o hold_v this_o for_o a_o sure_a ground_n if_o god_n be_v on_o my_o side_n who_o can_v be_v against_o i_o therefore_o doubtless_o those_o man_n who_o be_v drive_v back_o by_o these_o discouragement_n be_v never_o settle_v in_o assurance_n that_o their_o sin_n be_v forgive_v nor_o satisfy_v sufficient_o that_o god_n be_v on_o the_o side_n of_o all_o good_a minister_n and_o that_o their_o call_v as_o it_o have_v his_o authority_n from_o god_n so_o likewise_o allowance_n blessing_n assisstance_n and_o defence_n of_o god_n above_o any_o other_o call_v for_o if_o they_o be_v they_o will_v scorn_v the_o scorn_n and_o contemn_v the_o contempt_n of_o the_o profane_a world_n and_o with_o much_o courage_n and_o comfort_n set_v their_o hand_n to_o god_n plough_n and_o say_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o i_o be_o send_v i_o also_o second_o let_v we_o observe_v how_o the_o prophet_n when_o god_n ask_v the_o question_n send_v he_o not_o to_o other_o nor_o commend_v other_o to_o that_o service_n as_o be_v to_o be_v think_v he_o may_v have_v do_v many_o in_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n but_o offer_v himself_o here_o be_o i_o it_o control_v the_o carnal_a course_n of_o many_o among_o we_o in_o the_o university_n who_o think_v it_o sufficient_a
who_o conscience_n be_v burden_v with_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n &_o that_o without_o repentance_n thus_o we_o see_v the_o ground_n of_o his_o reason_n how_o true_a it_o be_v that_o a_o man_n in_o his_o sin_n can_v cheerful_o come_v nor_o bold_o stand_v in_o god_n presence_n the_o into_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n first_o of_o all_o let_v we_o see_v the_o monstrous_a presumption_n of_o such_o minister_n as_o dare_v venture_v rash_o into_o the_o ministry_n to_o tread_v upon_o the_o holy_a ground_n of_o god_n with_o unclean_a foot_n to_o handle_v sin_n the_o holy_a thing_n of_o god_n with_o unwashen_n hand_n for_o what_o be_v it_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o ministry_n but_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o chamber_n of_o presence_n of_o the_o great_a king_n and_o shall_v not_o a_o man_n look_v about_o he_o chamber_n afore_o he_o come_v there_o therefore_o if_o god_n rebuke_v moses_n for_o step_v too_o hasty_o towards_o the_o bush_n where_o his_o presence_n be_v and_o say_v come_v not_o too_o near_o for_o â—_o the_o place_n where_o thoustande_v be_v holy_a ground_n then_o how_o will_v god_n rebuke_v and_o check_v the_o conscience_n of_o such_o carnal_a man_n as_o careless_o &_o carnal_o rush_v into_o the_o pulpit_n and_o to_o god_n holy_a table_n where_o god_n be_v present_a in_o a_o far_o more_o excellent_a manner_n than_o he_o be_v in_o the_o bush_n and_o if_o they_o be_v so_o to_o be_v blame_v who_o preparation_n enter_v into_o this_o call_n without_o fear_n and_o reverence_n then_o how_o much_o more_o faulty_a be_v they_o who_o be_v minister_n dare_v venture_v to_o preach_v or_o minister_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n without_o holy_a and_o private_a preparation_n &_o sanctification_n of_o themselves_o but_o rush_v upon_o they_o as_o upon_o common_a &_o profane_a action_n whereas_o god_n be_v present_a there_o in_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o glorious_a manner_n these_o man_n sure_o will_v say_v the_o prophet_n here_o be_v of_o too_o nice_a a_o conscience_n but_o fearful_o and_o terrible_o shall_v god_n appear_v at_o last_o unto_o such_o man_n as_o care_v not_o how_o they_o appear_v in_o his_o holy_a presence_n second_o this_o show_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o christian_a church_n sermon_n who_o use_v to_o pray_v before_o the_o sermon_n &_o after_o namely_o not_o for_o decorum_n only_o &_o to_o grace_v the_o action_n but_o to_o sanctify_v and_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o because_o than_o we_o come_v before_o god_n presence_n they_o therefore_o do_v not_o think_v reverent_o enough_o of_o god_n and_o his_o presence_n who_o do_v by_o their_o practice_n in_o any_o sort_n make_v way_n to_o the_o contrary_n three_o we_o may_v here_o learn_v the_o pitiful_a sinner_n case_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o be_v so_o presumptuous_a as_o to_o exercise_v that_o holy_a function_n &_o yet_o remain_v 〈◊〉_d their_o sin_n without_o repentance_n what_o do_v these_o man_n they_o approach_v to_o the_o burn_a bush_n with_o their_o shoe_n on_o their_o foot_n that_o be_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n what_o shall_v come_v of_o it_o in_o the_o end_n sure_o that_o burn_a fire_n shall_v consume_v they_o the_o least_o sin_n &_o small_a negligence_n affright_v this_o holy_a prophet_n when_o he_o shall_v go_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o these_o man_n 16._o dare_v come_v into_o the_o sanctuary_n of_o god_n yea_o dare_v take_v god_n word_n in_o their_o mouth_n be_v and_o yet_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v and_o do_v cast_v the_o glorious_a word_n of_o god_n behind_o their_o back_n which_o they_o preach_v to_o other_o with_o their_o mouth_n these_o man_n may_v wonder_v at_o this_o holy_a prophet_n niceness_n or_o else_o all_o the_o world_n may_v wonder_v at_o their_o profaneness_n a_o little_a pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n fear_v he_o to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o these_o dare_v do_v it_o with_o eye_n ear_n lip_n foot_n hand_n hart_n and_o all_o pollute_a their_o eye_n pollute_v with_o careless_a look_v at_o all_o vanity_n their_o ear_n with_o hear_v and_o their_o lip_n with_o speak_v wanton_a &_o wicked_a talk_n their_o foot_n with_o run_v into_o wicked_a company_n their_o hand_n with_o practise_v and_o their_o heart_n with_o devise_v and_o consent_v fruitless_a to_o all_o wickedness_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o the_o labour_n of_o such_o man_n be_v almost_o unprofitable_a because_o they_o dare_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o sin_n in_o many_o place_n of_o our_o land_n there_o be_v by_o god_n blessing_n much_o teach_n yet_o there_o be_v little_a reformation_n in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o most_o but_o contrariwise_o some_o fall_n to_o atheism_n some_o to_o papism_n some_o into_o foul_a sin_n not_o to_o be_v name_v among_o christian_o where_o be_v the_o cause_n sure_o not_o in_o the_o good_a gospel_n nor_o in_o our_o doctrine_n nor_o in_o the_o teach_n of_o it_o but_o one_o very_o principal_a cause_n be_v many_o minister_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n unsanctified_a &_o in_o their_o sin_n not_o care_v how_o loose_o they_o live_v in_o the_o face_n of_o their_o people_n and_o therefore_o god_n in_o justice_n though_o he_o instant_o smite_v not_o they_o with_o visible_a vengeance_n for_o their_o presumption_n yet_o he_o smite_v the_o judgement_n people_n with_o spiritual_a blindness_n that_o they_o regard_v not_o their_o doctrine_n but_o look_v at_o their_o life_n and_o do_v rather_o follow_v the_o profaneness_n of_o the_o one_o than_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o other_o minister_n be_v such_o in_o who_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v therefore_o because_o they_o do_v not_o so_o but_o dishonour_v he_o by_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n in_o their_o sin_n therefore_o he_o can_v abide_v they_o nor_o give_v any_o blessing_n to_o their_o labour_n all_o minister_n therefore_o as_o they_o will_v see_v any_o fruit_n of_o their_o ministry_n let_v they_o first_o sanctify_v themselves_o &_o cleanse_v their_o heart_n by_o repentance_n afore_o they_o presume_v to_o stand_v up_o to_o rebuke_v sin_n in_o other_o else_o let_v they_o not_o think_v that_o life_n their_o golden_a word_n shall_v do_v so_o much_o good_a as_o their_o leaden_a life_n shall_v do_v hurt_v and_o they_o may_v happen_v to_o confirm_v man_n that_o already_o be_v convert_v but_o hardly_o shall_v any_o such_o man_n convert_v any_o soul_n from_o popery_n or_o profaneness_n and_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a conceit_n for_o man_n to_o imagine_v there_o be_v any_o force_n in_o eloquence_n or_o humane_a learning_n to_o overthrow_v that_o sin_n in_o other_o which_o rule_v and_o reign_v in_o themselves_o our_o church_n and_o all_o reform_a church_n may_v make_v use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n for_o it_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o church_n to_o have_v their_o doctrine_n powerful_a &_o effectual_a for_o the_o win_n of_o soul_n therefore_o it_o concern_v they_o to_o take_v order_n as_o well_o that_o their_o minister_n be_v godly_a man_n as_o good_a scholar_n &_o their_o life_n inoffensive_a as_o well_o as_o their_o doctrine_n sound_n or_o else_o they_o will_v find_v in_o woeful_a experience_n that_o they_o pull_v down_o as_o much_o with_o the_o one_o hand_n as_o they_o build_v up_o with_o the_o other_o but_o most_o near_o this_o doctrine_n touch_v minister_n themselves_o who_o must_v know_v their_o case_n be_v most_o fearful_a of_o all_o man_n if_o they_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o profaneness_n for_o as_o no_o man_n be_v more_o honourable_a than_o a_o learned_a and_o holy_a minister_n so_o none_o more_o contemptible_a in_o this_o world_n none_o more_o miserable_a for_o that_o to_o come_v than_o he_o that_o by_o his_o loose_a &_o lewd_a life_n do_v scandalize_v his_o doctrine_n and_o let_v he_o assure_v himself_o that_o for_o his_o presumption_n in_o rush_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o his_o sin_n he_o shall_v in_o this_o world_n be_v cast_v out_o as_o unsavoury_a salt_n 13._o and_o tread_v down_o of_o man_n with_o the_o foot_n of_o contempt_n and_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v he_o shall_v above_o all_o man_n cry_v out_o in_o most_o extreme_a torment_n of_o conscience_n wâ—_n be_v i_o that_o my_o eye_n must_v see_v the_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o host_n and_o so_o because_o he_o will_v not_o in_o this_o world_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o sanctification_n and_o holiness_n he_o shall_v therefore_o in_o fear_n and_o horror_n be_v hale_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n glory_n at_o the_o last_o day_n there_o to_o receive_v the_o just_a sentence_n of_o his_o condemnation_n last_o all_o painful_a and_o godly_a minister_n may_v receive_v comfort_n not_o to_o be_v duty_n discourage_v or_o drive_v from_o god_n presence_n because_o of_o their_o corruption_n or_o infirmity_n for_o we_o see_v it_o be_v the_o prophet_n case_n but_o let_v they_o still_o approach_v in_o fear_n and_o reverence_n and_o be_v
so_o far_o from_o be_v drive_v from_o their_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v sinful_a man_n dare_v not_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n without_o much_o fear_n as_o let_v they_o contrariwise_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o more_o they_o tremble_v at_o god_n presence_n here_o the_o less_o shall_v they_o fear_v it_o at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o when_o profane_a and_o ungodly_a man_n who_o in_o this_o world_n fear_v not_o to_o stand_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o their_o horrible_a sin_n shall_v cry_v to_o the_o mountain_n fall_v upon_o we_o and_o hill_n cover_v we_o and_o hide_v we_o from_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n then_o such_o minister_n as_o in_o this_o world_n in_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o always_o in_o repentance_n do_v approach_v into_o god_n presence_n shall_v then_o look_v up_o and_o lift_v up_o their_o head_n &_o shall_v say_v to_o the_o holy_a angel_n &_o all_o the_o power_n of_o heaven_n help_v we_o and_o hasten_v we_o to_o come_v into_o the_o glorious_a presence_n of_o our_o god_n and_o saviour_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o manisold_a use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n to_o our_o church_n and_o ministry_n papist_n second_o in_o asmuch_o as_o here_o the_o prophet_n in_o a_o conscience_n of_o his_o corruption_n fear_v and_o cry_v out_o at_o the_o least_o apparition_n of_o god_n glory_n the_o vanity_n and_o false_a deal_n of_o the_o collusion_n church_n of_o rome_n be_v here_o discover_v in_o who_o legend_n &_o story_n of_o their_o saint_n nothing_o be_v more_o common_a than_o apparition_n from_o heaven_n of_o saint_n depart_v of_o glorious_a angel_n of_o the_o virgin_n mary_n and_o that_o so_o familiar_o as_o sometime_o she_o sing_v with_o they_o in_o their_o cell_n kiss_v some_o of_o they_o and_o let_v they_o suck_v her_o breast_n nay_o of_o god_n himself_o and_o especial_o of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n jesus_n who_o they_o say_v appear_v i_o know_v not_o how_o oft_o to_o one_o man_n namely_o to_o saint_n francis_n and_o appear_v as_o he_o be_v crucify_v with_o his_o wound_n and_o imprint_v those_o wound_n of_o he_o in_o francis_n his_o body_n which_o they_o say_v he_o bear_v all_o his_o life_n and_o that_o they_o bleed_v whensoever_o he_o will_v suffer_v they_o which_o he_o always_o do_v on_o good_a friday_n that_o he_o may_v be_v like_a to_o christ_n thus_o &c_n &c_n many_o more_o such_o may_z yousee_fw-fr in_o that_o fabulous_a &_o blasphemous_a book_n of_o the_o conformity_n of_o s._n francis_n but_o for_o the_o matter_n be_v apparition_n from_o heaven_n so_o ordinary_a in_o the_o popish_a church_n how_o then_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o the_o great_a and_o holy_a man_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v so_o ameze_v at_o the_o very_a apparition_n but_o of_o a_o angel_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o the_o story_n some_o run_v away_o and_o hide_v themselves_o some_o cover_v their_o face_n some_o fell_a flat_a on_o the_o ground_n and_o the_o prophet_n here_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v my_o eye_n have_v see_v the_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o host_n but_o in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n look_v the_o story_n that_o saint_n or_o monk_n be_v no_o body_n that_o have_v not_o have_v some_o apparition_n either_o of_o the_o virgin_n marie_n or_o some_o of_o the_o apostle_n or_o a_o angel_n or_o christ_n jesus_n appear_v and_o talk_v with_o they_o and_o yet_o alas_o peter_n lame_v 33._o and_o john_n those_o three_o great_a pillar_n they_o be_v as_o good_a as_o beside_o themselves_o at_o the_o appear_v of_o a_o little_a part_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o transfiguration_n either_o therefore_o must_v it_o follow_v that_o these_o man_n have_v no_o sin_n in_o they_o which_o dare_v and_o can_v behold_v god_n glory_n so_o easy_o and_o so_o ordinary_o which_o be_v impossible_a or_o rather_o which_o indeed_o be_v truth_n it_o appear_v that_o these_o be_v but_o deceitful_a fancy_n and_o forgery_n of_o their_o own_o devise_n to_o deceive_v the_o world_n and_o to_o magnify_v themselves_o before_o the_o eye_n testament_n of_o the_o common_a people_n for_o it_o be_v first_o of_o all_o most_o false_a that_o apparition_n be_v so_o common_a as_o they_o make_v they_o for_o if_o they_o be_v then_o be_v they_o more_o ordinary_a in_o the_o new_a testament_n then_o in_o the_o old_a for_o whereas_o the_o scripture_n have_v one_o their_o legion_n have_v twenty_o &_o whereas_o one_o namely_o saint_n paul_n be_v once_o rapt_v into_o heaven_n they_o have_v 20._o that_o be_v rapt_v thither_o and_o as_o that_o be_v false_a so_o be_v it_o glory_n impossible_a that_o any_o man_n clothe_v with_o flesh_n can_v endure_v a_o extraordinary_a apparition_n of_o god_n glory_n without_o extreme_a amazement_n as_o be_v plain_a herd_n in_o the_o prophet_n who_o i_o hope_v be_v as_o holy_a a_o man_n as_o the_o holy_a monk_n that_o ever_o be_v i_o have_v note_v this_o that_o young_a divine_n may_v be_v occasion_v to_o look_v a_o little_a into_o their_o fabulous_a legend_n that_o so_o they_o may_v discover_v the_o false_a trick_n and_o juggle_a cast_v of_o that_o religion_n which_o evil_a shift_n it_o need_v not_o if_o it_o be_v of_o god_n three_o the_o people_n may_v here_o learn_v heaven_n first_o in_o that_o god_n presence_n be_v so_o glorious_a and_o fearful_a to_o man_n nature_n how_o merciful_o god_n have_v deal_v with_o they_o in_o teach_v they_o not_o by_o himself_o or_o by_o his_o angel_n from_o heaven_n which_o they_o can_v never_o endure_v but_o by_o man_n who_o be_v like_o themselves_o and_o how_o vain_a and_o fond_a go_v with_o they_o consider_v that_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o god_n own_o presence_n can_v be_v endure_v by_o any_o man_n 2._o inasmuch_o as_o god_n presence_n be_v so_o glorious_a sacrament_n in_o itself_o and_o fearful_a to_o our_o nature_n all_o man_n be_v teach_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o by_o holy_a prayer_n by_o humisiation_n and_o confession_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o unworthiness_n afore_o they_o come_v to_o god_n word_n or_o sacrament_n for_o they_o come_v at_o that_o time_n into_o god_n presence_n they_o therefore_o be_v not_o to_o come_v in_o their_o security_n
