bring_v up_o to_o the_o devil_n it_o be_v no_o great_a business_n to_o help_v they_o that_o can_v entertain_v they_o at_o school_n o_o that_o we_o be_v all_o willing_a to_o contribute_v for_o such_o a_o work_n it_o may_v help_v they_o to_o know_v something_o of_o god_n or_o to_o be_v civil_a at_o least_o it_o will_v also_o remove_v the_o excuse_n that_o we_o frequent_o meet_v with_o from_o many_o to_o wit_n that_o they_o can_v read_v and_o if_o parent_n will_v not_o be_v serious_o concern_v in_o this_o themselves_o god_n require_v we_o to_o take_v some_o course_n to_o bring_v up_o their_o young_a one_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o true_o if_o this_o external_a easy_a mean_n be_v neglect_v we_o can_v expect_v little_a of_o other_o mean_n if_o this_o be_v mind_v it_o may_v be_v a_o ornament_n to_o the_o city_n and_o the_o burden_n will_v not_o be_v so_o very_o great_a if_o it_o be_v once_o put_v to_o the_o trial_n will_v you_o that_o be_v parent_n and_o able_a be_v induce_v to_o put_v your_o child_n to_o the_o school_n if_o you_o be_v not_o able_a make_v it_o know_v i_o know_v there_o be_v some_o who_o will_v drink_v more_o in_o one_o day_n sometime_o then_o will_v keep_v their_o child_n at_o the_o school_n for_o many_o day_n and_o i_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o who_o can_v say_v that_o it_o be_v mere_a necessity_n that_o let_v they_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o can_v say_v you_o will_v fain_o bring_v up_o your_o child_n at_o school_n and_o you_o speak_v to_o magistrate_n or_o to_o church-session_n for_o help_v and_o that_o it_o be_v refuse_v you_o it_o be_v your_o part_n to_o seek_v for_o help_v that_o be_v real_o unable_a and_o it_o lie_v on_o you_o to_o see_v to_o it_o yourselves_o who_o be_v able_a and_o while_o you_o neither_o do_v yourselves_o nor_o seek_v help_n from_o other_o you_o be_v utter_o in-excusable_a 2._o i_o will_v commend_v to_o you_o the_o necessity_n of_o use_v private_a mean_n and_o that_o you_o will_v not_o lay_v all_o the_o weight_n of_o your_o profit_v on_o your_o be_v in_o the_o church_n and_o on_o your_o come_n to_o be_v catechise_v or_o to_o hear_v other_o catechise_v but_o give_v conscientious_a use_n make_v of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n the_o great_a ordinary_a mean_a of_o knowledge_n and_o that_o you_o who_o be_v most_o concern_v will_v be_v think_v of_o the_o great_a conveniency_n if_o not_o necessity_n of_o more_o labourer_n if_o it_o be_v know_v how_o numerous_a a_o people_n we_o be_v how_o many_o hunder_v every_o one_o who_o labour_n among_o you_o have_v under_o his_o charge_n how_o little_a time_n we_o have_v to_o go_v through_o you_o all_o particular_o and_o what_o abound_v ignorance_n there_o be_v in_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o people_n i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v think_v that_o the_o charge_n of_o any_o one_o of_o we_o may_v require_v two_o to_o discharge_v it_o suitable_o which_o we_o do_v not_o preâ—â—e_v to_o spare_v our_o own_o labour_n and_o pain_n but_o to_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o a_o necessary_a duty_n the_o effect_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v not_o impossible_o and_o it_o be_v a_o work_n and_o duty_n well_o become_v you_o and_o worthy_a of_o you_o the_o lord_n himself_o persuade_v you_o to_o mind_v it_o i_o shall_v close_v up_o all_o with_o a_o caveat_n or_o two_o 1._o beware_v of_o place_v over_o much_o religion_n in_o knowledge_n or_o of_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o your_o knowledge_n when_o you_o attain_v to_o any_o measure_n of_o it_o 2._o beware_v of_o count_v mere_a knowledge_n to_o be_v faith_n but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o know_v and_o discern_v the_o object_n be_v sure_a that_o you_o take_v hold_v of_o and_o rest_n upon_o that_o which_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n discern_v the_o land_n be_v to_o say_v so_o afar_o off_o and_o within_o the_o veil_n cast_v therefore_o the_o anchor_n of_o hope_n there_o 3._o beware_v of_o think_v that_o you_o mere_o of_o yourselves_o can_v acquire_v any_o our_o report_n so_o it_o be_v the_o prophet_n complaint_n of_o the_o little_a fruit_n himself_o have_v and_o that_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n shall_v have_v in_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n regrate_v and_o complain_v of_o it_o to_o god_n as_o a_o sore_a matter_n that_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o so_o many_o and_o so_o few_o shall_v get_v good_a of_o it_o so_o few_o shall_v be_v bring_v to_o believe_v and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o it_o though_o these_o word_n be_v few_o yet_o they_o have_v four_o great_a thing_n in_o they_o to_o which_o we_o shall_v reduce_v they_o for_o this_o that_o his_o message_n be_v not_o take_v off_o his_o hand_n that_o christ_n be_v not_o receive_v believe_v in_o and_o rest_v on_o this_o be_v the_o great_a challenge_n minister_n have_v against_o the_o generality_n of_o people_n and_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o complaint_n to_o god_n that_o whatever_o they_o report_v concern_v christ_n he_o be_v not_o welcome_v his_o kingdom_n thrive_v not_o that_o we_o may_v speak_v to_o the_o first_o consider_v the_o word_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o scope_n we_o shall_v draw_v five_o or_o six_o doctrine_n from_o they_o the_o first_o whereof_o be_v more_o general_a that_o the_o discovery_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o the_o make_v he_o know_v be_v the_o great_a news_n the_o glade_a tiding_n and_o the_o most_o excellent_a report_n that_o ever_o come_v or_o can_v come_v to_o a_o people_n there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n can_v be_v tell_v they_o no_o such_o tiding_n can_v they_o hear_v this_o be_v the_o report_n that_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o by_o way_n of_o eminency_n a_o report_n above_o and_o beyond_o all_o other_o report_n these_o be_v news_n worthy_a to_o be_v carry_v by_o angel_n behold_v say_v one_o of_o they_o luke_n 2.20_o i_o bring_v you_o good_a tiding_n of_o great_a joy_n which_o shall_v be_v to_o all_o people_n and_o what_o be_v these_o tiding_n so_o prefaced_a to_o with_o a_o behold_v for_o unto_o you_o be_v bear_v this_o day_n in_o the_o city_n of_o david_n a_o saviour_n which_o be_v christ_n the_o lord_n these_o be_v the_o good_a tiding_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v come_v and_o that_o he_o be_v the_o saviour_n by_o office_n we_o shall_v not_o insist_v on_o this_o only_o 1._o we_o will_v find_v a_o little_a view_n of_o this_o subject_a in_o the_o follow_a word_n which_o hold_v forth_o clear_o christ_n god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n so_o complete_o qualify_v and_o excellent_o furnish_v for_o his_o office_n 2._o it_o be_v also_o clear_a if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o excellent_a effect_n that_o come_v by_o his_o be_v so_o furnish_v as_o his_o satisfy_n of_o justice_n his_o set_n free_a of_o captive_n his_o triumph_v over_o principality_n and_o power_n his_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n etc._n etc._n there_o can_v be_v more_o excellent_a work_n or_o effect_n speak_v of_o 3._o it_o be_v clear_a if_o we_o look_v to_o he_o from_o who_o this_o report_n come_v and_o in_o who_o breast_n these_o news_n breed_v if_o we_o may_v speak_v so_o they_o be_v the_o result_n of_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o godhead_n and_o therefore_o as_o the_o report_n here_o be_v make_v in_o the_o lord_n name_n so_o he_o be_v complain_v to_o when_o it_o be_v not_o take_v off_o the_o prophet_n hand_n and_o 4._o it_o be_v clear_a if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o mysteriousness_n of_o these_o news_n angel_n can_v never_o have_v conceive_v they_o have_v not_o this_o report_n come_v these_o thing_n tell_v that_o they_o be_v great_a glorious_a and_o good_a news_n glad_a tiding_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o former_a chapter_n that_o which_o have_v not_o be_v tell_v they_o shall_v they_o see_v and_o that_o which_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v shall_v they_o consider_v the_o first_o use_n be_v to_o draw_v our_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o waken_v our_o estimation_n of_o it_o people_n ear_n be_v itch_a after_o novelty_n and_o you_o be_v much_o wear_v out_o of_o conceit_n with_o these_o news_n but_o be_v there_o in_o any_o news_n such_o a_o advantage_n as_o in_o these_o when_o god_n send_v news_n to_o man_n they_o must_v be_v great_a news_n and_o such_o indeed_o be_v these_o use_v 2._o therefore_o be_v afraid_a to_o entertain_v loathe_v of_o the_o plain_a substantial_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o have_v never_o hear_v they_o before_o there_o will_v belike_o be_v some_o athenian_a itch_n to_o hear_v and_o speak_v of_o they_o but_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v the_o less_o think_v of_o that_o they_o be_v often_o hear_v and_o speak_v of_o use_v 3_o therefore_o think_v more_o of_o the_o gospel_n see_v it_o contain_v the_o substance_n of_o these_o good_a news_n and_o glad_a tiding_n and_o think_v more_o of_o gospel-ordinance_n whereby_o these_o good_a tiding_n be_v so_o often_o publish_v and_o make_v plain_a to_o you_o 2._o more_o particular_o observe_v that_o jesus_n christ_n and_o what_o concern_v he_o the_o glad_a and_o good_a news_n of_o a_o saviour_n and_o the_o report_n of_o they_o be_v the_o very_a proper_a work_n of_o a_o minister_n and_o the_o great_a subject_n of_o a_o minister_n preach_v his_o proper_a work_n be_v to_o make_v he_o know_v or_o take_v it_o thus_o christ_n be_v the_o native_a subject_n on_o which_o all_o preach_a shall_v run_v this_o be_v the_o report_n the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o here_o and_o in_o effect_n it_o be_v so_o to_o john_n and_o the_o other_o apostle_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o to_o all_o minister_n christ_n jesus_n and_o what_o concern_v he_o in_o his_o person_n nature_n and_o office_n to_o know_v and_o make_v he_o know_v to_o be_v god_n and_o man_n to_o make_v he_o know_v in_o his_o office_n to_o be_v priest_n prophet_n and_o king_n to_o be_v a_o priest_n in_o his_o suffering_n and_o satisfy_v justice_n to_o be_v a_o prophet_n in_o reveal_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o be_v a_o king_n for_o subdue_a folk_n lust_n and_o corruption_n and_o to_o know_v and_o make_v he_o know_v in_o the_o way_n by_o which_o sinner_n both_o preacher_n and_o hearer_n may_v come_v to_o have_v he_o to_o themselves_o as_o follow_v in_o this_o chapter_n this_o this_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o all_o preach_a and_o all_o preach_a shall_v be_v level_v at_o this_o mark_n paul_n be_v 1_o cor._n 2.2_o peremptory_a in_o this_o i_o determine_v to_o know_v nothing_o among_o you_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v i_o will_v meddle_v with_o no_o other_o thing_n the_o apostolic_a epistle_n which_o be_v as_o so_o many_o preach_n of_o he_o and_o that_o preach_v which_o stand_v not_o in_o relation_n to_o he_o be_v beside_o the_o text_n and_o mark_n 2._o he_o be_v hold_v out_o as_o the_o foundation_n and_o groundwork_n of_o preach_v so_o that_o preach_v without_o he_o want_v foundation_n and_o be_v the_o building_n as_o it_o be_v of_o a_o castle_n in_o the_o air_n
suitable_o affect_v with_o they_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n that_o god_n have_v send_v such_o a_o report_n to_o people_n and_o in_o it_o have_v lay_v christ_n so_o near_o they_o that_o he_o put_v he_o home_o to_o they_o and_o lay_v he_o before_o they_o even_o at_o their_o foot_n as_o it_o be_v and_o as_o great_a a_o wonder_n that_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v condescend_v to_o give_v such_o a_o saviour_n and_o bâ—ought_v he_o so_o near_o that_o all_o he_o call_v for_o be_v faith_n to_o believe_v the_o report_n or_o rather_o faith_n in_o he_o of_o who_o the_o report_n be_v which_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n the_o second_o thing_n then_o be_v the_o duty_n that_o lie_v on_o people_n to_o who_o the_o lord_n send_v the_o gospel_n or_o this_o report_n concern_v christ_n and_o you_o may_v take_v it_o in_o this_o general_a that_o it_o lie_v on_o all_o that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n to_o believe_v the_o report_n that_o it_o bring_v concern_v christ_n and_o by_o faith_n to_o receive_v he_o who_o be_v hold_v out_o to_o they_o in_o it_o this_o be_v clear_o employ_v isaiah_n and_o all_o minister_n be_v send_v to_o report_v concern_v he_o and_o to_o bear_v witness_n of_o he_o and_o its_o the_o duty_n of_o all_o hearer_n to_o believe_v it_o and_o this_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o he_o and_o their_o complaint_n when_o people_n do_v not_o believe_v it_o by_o compare_v this_o text_n with_o rom._n 10.16_o and_o john_n 12.38_o we_o show_v that_o it_o be_v save_a faith_n that_o be_v here_o to_o be_v understand_v i_o shall_v take_v up_o this_o doctrine_n in_o three_o branch_n which_o we_o will_v find_v in_o the_o word_n and_o which_o will_v make_v way_n for_o the_o use_n 1._o that_o a_o people_n to_o who_o christ_n be_v offer_v in_o the_o gospel_n may_v all_o that_o be_v iâ—_n he_o this_o be_v also_o here_o employ_v in_o the_o regrate_a make_v of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n which_o prejudge_v man_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o shall_v short_o put_v by_o the_o first_o of_o these_o which_o be_v that_o all_o that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n preach_v have_v warrant_n to_o believe_v and_o receive_v christ_n for_o have_v preach_v so_o many_o pleasant_a plain_a and_o powerful_a sermon_n to_o a_o people_n from_o the_o lord_n and_o yet_o that_o he_o shall_v have_v so_o many_o sad_a complaint_n as_o he_o have_v chap._n 6_o 28_o and_o 58._o that_o he_o shall_v be_v put_v to_o bring_v in_o the_o lord_n say_v all_o the_o day_n long_o have_v i_o stretch_v out_o my_o hand_n to_o a_o rebellious_a people_n chap._n 65._o and_o that_o here_o himself_o shall_v have_v it_o to_o say_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n it_o be_v scarce_o one_o man_n here_o or_o there_o that_o have_v save_o believe_v on_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n that_o now_o we_o will_v speak_v to_o and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a though_o a_o very_a clear_a truth_n the_o doctrine_n be_v this_o that_o there_o may_v be_v much_o powerful_a preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o unbelief_n general_o among_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o or_o take_v it_o with_o dependence_n on_o the_o former_a two_o namely_o 1._o that_o the_o great_a work_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v to_o propose_v and_o make_v christ_n know_v to_o a_o people_n 2._o that_o the_o great_a duty_n of_o a_o people_n that_o have_v christ_n propose_v to_o they_o be_v to_o believe_v on_o he_o then_o this_o 3._o follow_v on_o the_o back_n of_o these_o that_o a_o people_n may_v have_v christ_n propose_v to_o they_o bring_v to_o their_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o though_o it_o be_v but_o believe_v that_o be_v call_v for_o from_o they_o yet_o that_o can_v be_v obtain_v from_o most_o of_o they_o this_o gospel-duty_n of_o believe_v be_v often_o slight_v by_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v clear_o hold_v forth_o here_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n we_o have_v call_v for_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n among_o the_o multitude_n of_o hearer_n to_o get_v one_o that_o believe_v save_o to_o make_v out_o and_o prove_v this_o a_o little_a further_o we_o will_v consider_v this_o complaint_n with_o these_o aggravation_n of_o it_o which_o will_v make_v it_o the_o more_o clear_a and_o so_o the_o more_o to_o be_v wonder_v at_o as_o 1._o these_o of_o who_o the_o complaint_n be_v make_v it_o be_v not_o heathen_n but_o god_n own_o people_n as_o the_o lord_n complain_v psal_n 81_o 10_o 11._o my_o people_n will_v not_o hearken_v to_o my_o voice_n and_o israel_n will_v have_v none_o of_o i_o our_o lord_n jesus_n complain_v of_o jerusalem_n matth._n 23._o at_o the_o end_n o_o jerusalem_n jerusalem_n how_o often_o will_v i_o have_v gather_v thou_o and_o thou_o will_v not_o that_o the_o lord_n be_v own_o profess_v people_n shall_v not_o believe_v nor_o receive_v the_o report_n that_o be_v make_v of_o he_o heighten_v the_o complaint_n and_o aggravate_v their_o guilt_n exceed_o 2._o it_o be_v not_o a_o complaint_n as_o to_o one_o sermon_n or_o as_o to_o one_o time_n but_o it_o be_v a_o complaint_n frequent_o repeat_v as_o to_o many_o fruitless_a sermon_n and_o as_o to_o many_o time_n yea_o generation_n isaiah_n preach_v long_o in_o many_o king_n reign_n and_o yet_o all_o along_o his_o prophecy_n he_o complain_v of_o it_o as_o chap._n 6.11_o how_o long_a lord_n shall_v their_o eye_n be_v blind_a and_o their_o ear_n heavy_a etc._n etc._n and_o chap._n 28.9_o who_o shall_v i_o teach_v doctrine_n they_o that_o be_v wean_v from_o the_o milk_n and_o draw_v from_o the_o breast_n precept_n must_v be_v upon_o precept_n and_o line_n upon_o line_n here_o a_o little_a and_o there_o a_o little_a and_o chap._n 65.2_o all_o day_n long_o i_o have_v streatched_a out_o my_o hand_n to_o a_o rebellious_a people_n and_o here_o again_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n much_o and_o long_a or_o many_o year_n preach_v much_o plain_a and_o powerful_a preach_v and_o yet_o little_a or_o no_o fruit_n they_o be_v snare_v and_o take_v and_o fall_v backward_o for_o all_o that_o and_o this_o be_v not_o in_o

use_v serve_v to_o exhort_v you_o to_o and_o to_o commend_v the_o study_n of_o knowledge_n to_o you_o as_o a_o necessary_a commendable_a and_o profitable_a duty_n can_v we_o hope_v to_o prevail_v with_o you_o in_o any_o thing_n if_o we_o prevail_v not_o with_o you_o in_o this_o even_o to_o lay_v the_o necessity_n of_o knowledge_n to_o heart_n will_v not_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o object_n the_o authority_n of_o god_n command_v it_o the_o advantage_n that_o come_v by_o it_o with_o the_o prejudices_fw-la that_o attend_v and_o follow_v the_o want_n of_o it_o commend_v it_o to_o you_o have_v the_o confidence_n to_o say_v that_o you_o keep_v your_o heart_n to_o god_n when_o you_o be_v so_o void_a of_o the_o very_a form_n of_o religion_n which_o much_o consist_v in_o knowledge_n for_o it_o be_v that_o wherein_o it_o be_v keep_v and_o whereby_o through_o grace_n it_o be_v suitable_o exercise_v sure_o you_o can_v never_o have_v the_o power_n of_o religion_n who_o want_v the_o better_o spend_v time_n to_o take_v a_o hour_n in_o two_o or_o three_o day_n and_o bestow_v it_o in_o read_v of_o the_o scripture_n or_o of_o some_o good_a and_o edify_a book_n whereby_o you_o may_v come_v to_o knowledge_n and_o to_o grow_v in_o it_o then_o to_o take_v several_a hour_n every_o day_n almost_o in_o a_o alehouse_n or_o tavern_n many_o of_o you_o as_o it_o be_v well_o know_v will_v sit_v down_o in_o such_o place_n at_o four_o or_o five_o a_o clock_n in_o the_o afternoon_n and_o continue_v till_o eight_o or_o nine_o at_o night_n how_o much_o you_o drink_v i_o speak_v not_o to_o that_o but_o sure_o you_o misspend_v much_o precious_a time_n and_o much_o debauch_v your_o own_o spirit_n what_o if_o by_o such_o do_n you_o be_v lay_v a_o ground_n for_o this_o a_o challenge_n sir_n you_o live_v in_o such_o a_o place_n under_o such_o mean_n and_o you_o spend_v your_o time_n so_o and_o so_o you_o may_v have_v be_v fir_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o mispend_v of_o your_o time_n and_o of_o your_o ignorance_n have_v you_o take_v a_o part_n or_o the_o whole_a time_n and_o spend_v it_o in_o the_o study_n of_o knowledge_n will_v not_o this_o be_v better_o for_o your_o family_n better_a for_o your_o soul_n and_o better_a for_o your_o body_n will_v it_o not_o prevent_v much_o sin_n and_o much_o reproach_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o lay_v weight_n on_o the_o good_a of_o soul_n and_o body_n bestow_v more_o time_n in_o the_o study_n of_o knowledge_n that_o sin_n of_o tipple_a bring_v alongst_o with_o it_o many_o other_o sin_n and_o be_v it_o not_o well_o do_v to_o put_v some_o duty_n and_o even_o this_o duty_n in_o particular_a in_o the_o place_n of_o it_o other_o of_o you_o that_o drink_v and_o tipple_n not_o a_o way_n so_o much_o of_o your_o time_n you_o know_v what_o time_n you_o spend_v walk_v on_o the_o plain_a stone_n and_o in_o prattle_v and_o talk_v of_o idle_a and_o unedifying_a subject_n in_o droll_v and_o jest_a or_o in_o sit_v over_o the_o fire_n as_o we_o use_v to_o speak_v in_o your_o house_n do_v nothing_o when_o will_v you_o take_v some_o of_o that_o time_n in_o seek_v after_o knowledge_n other_o of_o you_o that_o follow_v your_o calling_n will_v you_o leave_v your_o work_n a_o little_a soon_o than_o you_o use_v to_o do_v on_o the_o saturnday_n evening_n or_o take_v the_o sabbath_n afternoon_n for_o this_o work_n some_o of_o you_o may_v study_v knowledge_n in_o your_o shop_n other_o may_v do_v it_o in_o your_o house_n if_o you_o will_v but_o give_v over_o to_o walk_v up_o and_o down_o the_o street_n when_o you_o be_v not_o all_o call_v to_o do_v so_o 3._o make_v conscience_n to_o improve_v the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n which_o you_o have_v read_v especial_o the_o bible_n and_o also_o the_o ground_n of_o religion_n compendious_o sum_v in_o the_o catechism_n lesser_a and_o large_a you_o have_v frequent_a preach_v and_o catechise_n at_o every_o diet_n study_v to_o get_v something_o and_o put_v every_o day_n lesson_n to_o another_o and_o this_o will_v through_o god_n blessing_n increase_v your_o knowledge_n for_o instance_n take_v this_o lesson_n to_o day_n that_o nothing_o can_v justify_v but_o the_o he_o will_v let_v he_o see_v as_o much_o as_o be_v meet_v and_o chap._n 34._o when_o he_o give_v he_o his_o answer_n it_o be_v not_o any_o glorious_a visible_a brightness_n he_o let_v he_o see_v but_o he_o proclaim_v his_o name_n to_o he_o the_o lord_n the_o lord_n gracious_a merciful_a etc._n etc._n and_o compare_v the_o word_n with_o the_o scope_n it_o say_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o save_a uptaking_n of_o god_n but_o as_o he_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o word_n and_o that_o way_n we_o be_v to_o be_v fix_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o he_o and_o in_o go_v to_o he_o by_o prayer_n through_o the_o mediator_n we_o will_v guard_v against_o any_o representation_n and_o fix_v our_o faith_n on_o clear_a promise_n and_o attribut_n as_o scripture_n hold_v he_o forth_o 5._o we_o will_v endeavour_v rather_o to_o have_v a_o compose_a frame_n of_o spirit_n with_o holy_a reverence_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o fear_n faith_n and_o love_n and_o of_o other_o spiritual_a grace_n then_o to_o fill_v our_o understanding_n with_o thing_n mere_o speculative_a and_o less_o practical_a and_o profitable_a and_o suppose_v that_o we_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n clear_a in_o what_o be_v reveal_v of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribut_n and_o promise_n in_o the_o word_n in_o as_o far_o as_o may_v found_v our_o faith_n and_o warrant_v we_o to_o put_v up_o such_o and_o such_o suit_n to_o god_n through_o the_o mediator_n and_o that_o we_o come_v to_o he_o in_o holy_a reverence_n we_o be_v rather_o to_o exercise_v our_o grace_n and_o have_v a_o â—ve_v downward_o in_o reflect_v on_o ourselves_o â—â—eking_v to_o be_v clear_a in_o what_o be_v call_v for_o in_o a_o worshipper_n of_o god_n then_o to_o be_v curious_o pore_v and_o pry_v into_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n himself_o and_o therefore_o let_v this_o be_v well_o study_v even_o to_o be_v up_o at_o that_o wherein_o we_o be_v clear_a and_o which_o we_o do_v not_o question_v not_o make_v any_o as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v profitable_a for_o sound_v of_o our_o faith_n and_o for_o guide_v of_o our_o practice_n but_o not_o to_o satisfy_v curiosity_n for_o if_o we_o once_o go_v to_o chase_v and_o follow_v question_n upon_o question_n in_o what_o concern_v the_o doctrinal_a and_o speculative_a part_n of_o this_o doctrine_n we_o will_v run_v ourselves_o a_o ground_n and_o therefore_o god_n it_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o very_a valuable_a mercy_n to_o be_v heple_v to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o part_n of_o christ_n office_n to_o wit_n his_o intercession_n this_o be_v that_o whereof_o we_o have_v begin_v some_o few_o day_n since_o to_o speak_v to_o you_o and_o for_o the_o better_a clear_n of_o it_o we_o endeavour_v to_o answer_v some_o doubt_n or_o question_n that_o it_o may_v be_v have_v arisen_a and_o be_v toss_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o while_o we_o have_v be_v discourse_v of_o and_o open_v up_o this_o matter_n that_o which_o we_o will_v now_o speak_v a_o little_a to_o forbear_v the_o speak_n of_o any_o doubt_n or_o question_n lest_o one_o occasion_n â—n_o another_o and_o therefore_o most_o certain_o there_o will_v be_v much_o sobriety_n here_o and_o a_o abandon_v of_o all_o sinful_a curiosity_n least_o unseasonable_a and_o intemperate_a desire_v to_o know_v either_o what_o be_v not_o to_o be_v know_v or_o what_o we_o can_v know_v mar_v and_o obstruct_v our_o improvement_n of_o what_o we_o do_v or_o may_v know_v several_a thing_n doubt_v of_o may_v be_v move_v and_o object_v here_o but_o we_o shall_v only_o speak_v a_o word_n to_o the_o clear_n of_o these_o four_n 1_o some_o thing_n concern_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o particular_o of_o prayer_n in_o general_n 2._o we_o shall_v consider_v how_o the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o prayer_n or_o how_o he_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o 3._o a_o word_n more_o particular_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o form_n of_o some_o particular_a petition_n and_o to_o what_o seem_v most_o warrantable_a from_o the_o word_n in_o these_o 4._o we_o shall_v answer_v some_o practical_a doubt_n that_o have_v or_o may_v have_v some_o puzzle_v influence_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o some_o christian_n but_o as_o i_o say_v we_o have_v need_v in_o speak_v and_o hear_v of_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v awe_v with_o some_o deep_a impression_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n on_o our_o heart_n lest_o we_o meddle_v carnal_o with_o matter_n of_o a_o most_o sublime_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a nature_n for_o clear_v of_o the_o first_o then_o we_o lay_v down_o these_o assertion_n the_o 1._o whereof_o be_v that_o as_o there_o be_v one_o worship_n so_o there_o be_v no_o formal_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o god_n this_o be_v clear_a because_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o with_o divine_a worship_n as_o namely_o with_o believe_v in_o they_o or_o pray_v to_o they_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v such_o attribut_n of_o omni-science_n omni-potency_n supremacy_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v only_o agreeable_a to_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n for_o we_o can_v pray_v to_o one_o but_o we_o must_v believe_v that_o he_o hear_v we_o and_o so_o that_o he_o be_v omni-scient_a that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o help_v we_o and_o so_o omni-poâ—entâ—_a that_o he_o be_v above_o all_o and_o so_o supreme_a as_o it_o be_v rom._n 10.14_o how_o shall_v they_o call_v on_o he_o in_o who_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v there_o can_v be_v no_o divine_a object_n of_o worship_n to_o settle_v the_o soul_n upon_o but_o where_o the_o essential_a attribut_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o we_o reject_v invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o angel_n adorability_n be_v the_o essential_a property_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o eternity_n and_o immutability_n be_v there_o can_v be_v no_o adore_v or_o worship_v of_o any_o but_o where_o there_o be_v adorability_n in_o the_o object_n that_o be_v worship_v by_o that_o worship_n and_o there_o be_v none_o capable_a of_o worship_n but_o god_n supremacy_n be_v due_a and_o essential_a to_o he_o only_o 2._o that_o though_o there_o be_v three_o person_n in_o the_o glorious_a and_o bless_a godhead_n distinct_a yet_o there_o be_v not_o three_o distinct_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n only_o the_o father_n be_v not_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n the_o son_n they_o put_v up_o their_o prayer_n to_o god_n on_o the_o account_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o not_o on_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n intercession_n or_o 3_o they_o be_v such_o as_o have_v something_o of_o god_n in_o they_o and_o so_o be_v believer_n and_o even_o in_o such_o there_o be_v often_o a_o great_a defect_n as_o to_o this_o as_o christ_n say_v to_o the_o disciple_n john_n 16.24_o hitherto_o you_o have_v ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n he_o charge_v they_o not_o simple_o for_o not_o pray_v he_o grant_v that_o but_o you_o have_v not_o ask_v in_o my_o name_n that_o be_v you_o have_v not_o make_v use_n of_o my_o intercession_n as_o you_o shall_v have_v do_v although_o there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o defect_n in_o they_o as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o former_a some_o good_a measure_n of_o holiness_n it_o be_v in_o some_o respect_n more_o difficult_a to_o rest_v upon_o christ_n righteousness_n then_o if_o that_o measure_n be_v not_o attain_v so_o be_v it_o to_o be_v any_o thing_n affect_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n and_o of_o other_o duty_n so_o that_o he_o be_v not_o gross_o dissemble_a 3._o when_o he_o be_v make_v thus_o serious_a it_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o bring_v he_o over_o that_o seriousness_n and_o to_o draw_v he_o from_o rest_v on_o these_o duty_n which_o he_o have_v be_v draw_v to_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o great_a and_o difficult_a work_n to_o get_v a_o man_n bring_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n and_o as_o great_a a_o work_n to_o get_v he_o bring_v over_o they_o and_o from_o rest_v on_o they_o to_o rest_v on_o christ_n righteousness_n for_o his_o justification_n and_o on_o christ_n intercession_n for_o the_o acceptance_n of_o his_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v once_o get_v his_o disciple_n to_o pray_v and_o honest_o yoke_v and_o engage_v therein_o he_o train_v they_o on_o to_o pray_v in_o his_o name_n and_o so_o to_o get_v their_o prayer_n right_o qualify_v 2._o if_o we_o consider_v our_o nature_n we_o will_v find_v that_o there_o be_v a_o averseness_n &_o backwardness_n therein_o to_o it_o as_o there_o be_v a_o averseness_n in_o we_o to_o all_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o the_o make_v we_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o every_o thing_n on_o christ_n that_o which_o thwart_v with_o our_o pride_n stand_v and_o stick_v at_o our_o stomach_n to_o speak_v so_o and_o go_v not_o well_o down_o with_o we_o of_o such_o nature_n be_v this_o for_o our_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n imply_v that_o we_o of_o ourselves_o be_v at_o a_o distance_n with_o god_n that_o we_o have_v break_v covenant_n and_o be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v without_o a_o mediator_n and_o there_o be_v in_o our_o nature_n a_o secret_a sort_n of_o swear_v sabbath-breaking_a and_o the_o like_a but_o they_o sleep_v more_o secure_o in_o this_o sin_n then_o in_o most_o other_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n easy_o fall_v into_o and_o a_o sin_n not_o easy_o recover_v from_o or_o win_v out_o of_o because_o it_o be_v a_o gospel-sin_n that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n reach_v not_o and_o that_o the_o conscience_n have_v not_o such_o a_o awe_n iâ—_n convince_a of_o it_o be_v against_o nature_n light_n to_o neglect_v prayer_n or_o to_o take_v god_n name_n in_o vain_a but_o this_o run_v in_o the_o channel_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o pray_v in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o make_v all_o our_o address_n to_o god_n through_o he_o the_o sinful_a neglect_n whereof_o can_v be_v discover_v but_o by_o gospel-light_n and_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o many_o will_v be_v convince_v of_o and_o have_v challenge_n for_o out-breaking_a sin_n who_o yet_o will_v have_v no_o challenge_n for_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n even_o as_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o convince_v folk_n of_o a_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n then_o of_o not_o believe_v in_o christ_n many_o will_v grant_v that_o ignorance_n of_o god_n be_v a_o sin_n and_o
