minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o other_o also_o as_o i_o take_v it_o which_o be_v man_n ancient_a for_o year_n endue_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o understanding_n and_o prayer_n and_o have_v withal_o the_o gift_n of_o work_a miracle_n and_o of_o heal_v the_o sick_a for_o in_o the_o primitive_a church_n this_o gift_n be_v for_o a_o time_n so_o plentiful_o bestow_v on_o they_o that_o beleve_v in_o christ_n 11._o that_o soldier_n cast_v out_o devil_n and_o parent_n wrought_v miracle_n on_o their_o child_n hence_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o howsoever_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n principal_o to_o visit_v and_o comfort_v the_o sick_a yet_o be_v it_o not_o their_o duty_n alone_o for_o it_o belong_v to_o they_o also_o which_o have_v knowledge_n of_o god_n word_n and_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n 3.13_o exhort_v one_o a_o other_o say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n while_o it_o be_v call_v to_o day_n and_o again_o 5.11.14_o admonish_v they_o that_o be_v disorder_v and_o comfort_v those_o that_o be_v weak_a and_o indeed_o in_o equity_n it_o shall_v be_v the_o duty_n of_o every_o christian_a man_n to_o comfort_v his_o brother_n in_o sickness_n here_o we_o must_v needs_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o common_a fault_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n when_o they_o come_v to_o visit_v their_o neighbour_n and_o friend_n they_o can_v not_o speak_v a_o word_n of_o instruction_n and_o comfort_n but_o spend_v the_o time_n either_o in_o silence_n gaze_v and_o look_v on_o or_o in_o utter_v word_n to_o little_a or_o no_o purpose_n say_v to_o the_o sick_a party_n that_o they_o be_v sorry_a to_o see_v he_o in_o that_o case_n that_o they_o will_v have_v he_o to_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n but_o wherein_o and_o by_o what_o mean_v they_o can_v tell_v that_o they_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o he_o shall_v recover_v his_o health_n and_o live_v with_o they_o still_o &_o be_v merry_a as_o in_o former_a time_n that_o they_o will_v pray_v for_o he_o whereas_o all_o their_o prayer_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o apostle_n creed_n or_o the_o ten_o commandment_n &_o the_o lord_n prayer_n utter_v without_o understanding_n and_o this_o be_v the_o common_a comfort_n thar_z sick_a man_n get_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o neighbour_n when_o they_o come_v unto_o they_o and_o all_o this_o come_v either_o because_o man_n live_v in_o ignorance_n of_o god_n word_n or_o because_o they_o false_o think_v that_o the_o whole_a burden_n of_o this_o duty_n lie_v upon_o the_o shoulder_n of_o the_o minister_n the_o second_o circumstance_n be_v when_o the_o sick_a party_n must_v send_v for_o the_o elder_n to_o instruct_v he_o and_o pray_v for_o he_o and_o that_o be_v in_o the_o very_a first_o place_n of_o all_o before_o any_o other_o help_v be_v seek_v for_o where_o the_o divine_a end_n there_o the_o physician_n must_v begin_v and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a preposterous_a course_n that_o the_o divine_a shall_v there_o begin_v where_o the_o physician_n make_v a_o end_n for_o till_o help_v be_v have_v for_o the_o soul_n and_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o root_n of_o sickness_n be_v cure_v physic_n for_o the_o body_n be_v nothing_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n much_o to_o be_v dislike_v that_o in_o all_o place_n almost_o the_o physician_n be_v first_o send_v for_o and_o come_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sickness_n and_o the_o minister_n come_v when_o a_o man_n be_v half_a dead_a and_o be_v then_o send_v for_o oftentimes_o when_o the_o sick_a party_n lie_v draw_v on_o and_o gasp_v for_o breath_n as_o though_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o these_o day_n be_v able_a to_o work_v miracle_n the_o second_o duty_n of_o the_o sick_a party_n be_v to_o confess_v his_o sin_n as_o s._n james_n say_v 5.6_o confess_v your_o sin_n one_o to_o another_o and_o pray_v one_o for_o another_o it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o this_o be_v to_o bring_v in_o again_o popish_a shrift_n ans._n confession_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o that_o unto_o man_n be_v never_o deny_v of_o any_o the_o question_n only_o be_v of_o the_o manner_n and_o order_n of_o make_v confession_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n we_o must_v put_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o popish_a shrift_n and_o the_o confession_n of_o which_o s._n james_n speak_v for_o he_o require_v only_o a_o confession_n of_o that_o or_o those_o sin_n which_o lie_v upon_o a_o man_n conscience_n when_o he_o be_v sick_a but_o the_o popish_a doctrine_n require_v a_o particular_a enumeration_n of_o all_o man_n sin_n again_o s._n james_n enjoin_v confession_n only_o as_o a_o thing_n meet_v &_o convenient_a but_o the_o papist_n as_o a_o thing_n necessary_a to_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n three_o s._n james_n permit_v that_o confession_n be_v make_v to_o any_o man_n &_o by_o one_o man_n to_o another_o mutual_o whereas_o popish_a shrift_n be_v make_v only_o to_o the_o priest_n the_o second_o duty_n than_o be_v that_o the_o sick_a party_n trouble_v in_o mind_n with_o the_o memory_n and_o consideration_n of_o any_o of_o his_o sin_n past_a or_o any_o manner_n of_o way_n tempt_v by_o the_o devil_n shall_v free_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n open_v his_o case_n to_o such_o as_o be_v both_o able_a &_o willing_a to_o help_v he_o that_o he_o may_v receive_v comfort_n and_o die_v in_o peace_n of_o conscience_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o sick_a man_n duty_n now_o follow_v the_o duty_n of_o helper_n the_o first_o be_v to_o pray_v over_o he_o that_o be_v in_o his_o presence_n to_o pray_v with_o he_o and_o for_o he_o and_o by_o prayer_n to_o present_v his_o very_a person_n and_o his_o whole_a estate_n unto_o god_n the_o prophet_n elizeus_fw-la the_o apostle_n paul_n 11.14_o &_o our_o saviour_n christ_n use_v this_o manner_n of_o pray_v when_o they_o will_v miraculous_o restore_v temporal_a life_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o meet_v that_o the_o same_o shall_v be_v use_v also_o of_o we_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o stir_v up_o our_o affection_n in_o prayer_n and_o our_o compassion_n to_o the_o sick_a when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o entreat_v the_o lord_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o second_o duty_n of_o he_o that_o come_v as_o a_o helper_n be_v to_o anoint_v the_o sick_a party_n with_o oil_n now_o this_o anoint_v be_v a_o outward_a ceremony_n which_o be_v use_v with_o the_o gift_n of_o heal_a which_o be_v now_o cease_v and_o therefore_o i_o omit_v to_o speak_v further_o of_o it_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o duty_n which_o the_o sick_a man_n owe_v to_o god_n now_o follow_v the_o duty_n which_o he_o be_v to_o perform_v unto_o himself_o and_o they_o be_v twofold_a one_o concern_v his_o soul_n the_o other_o his_o body_n the_o duty_n concern_v his_o soul_n be_v that_o he_o must_v arm_v &_o furnish_v himself_o against_o the_o immoderate_a fear_n of_o present_a death_n and_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v plain_a because_o howsoever_o natural_o man_n fear_v death_n through_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o their_o life_n more_o or_o less_o yet_o in_o the_o time_n of_o sickness_n when_o death_n approach_v this_o natural_a fear_n breed_v in_o the_o bone_n will_v most_o of_o all_o show_n itself_o even_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o it_o will_v astonish_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o sick_a party_n and_o sometime_o cause_n desperation_n therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o shall_v use_v mean_n to_o strengthen_v ourselves_o against_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n the_o mean_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n practice_n and_o meditation_n practice_n be_v two_o especial_o the_o first_o be_v that_o the_o sick_a man_n must_v not_o so_o much_o regard_v death_n itself_o as_o the_o benefit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v obtain_v after_o death_n he_o must_v not_o fix_v his_o mind_n upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o pang_n and_o torment_n of_o death_n but_o all_o his_o thought_n and_o affection_n must_v be_v set_v upon_o that_o bless_a estate_n that_o be_v enjoy_v after_o death_n he_o that_o be_v to_o pass_v over_o some_o great_a and_o deep_a river_n must_v not_o look_v downward_o to_o the_o stream_n of_o the_o water_n but_o if_o he_o will_v prevent_v fear_n he_o must_v set_v his_o foot_n sure_a &_o cast_v his_o eye_n to_o the_o bank_n on_o the_o further_a side_n &_o so_o must_v he_o that_o draw_v near_o death_n as_o it_o be_v look_v over_o the_o wave_n of_o
themselves_o reckon_v a_o few_o year_n and_o day_n that_o be_v able_a by_o art_n to_o measure_v the_o globe_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o sphere_n of_o heaven_n &_o the_o quantity_n of_o the_o star_n with_o their_o longitude_n latitude_n altitude_n motion_n &_o distance_n from_o the_o earth_n no_o very_o for_o howesoever_o by_o a_o general_a speculation_n we_o think_v something_o of_o our_o end_n yet_o unless_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v our_o schoolmaster_n to_o teach_v we_o our_o duty_n we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a sound_o to_o resolve_v ourselves_o of_o the_o presence_n and_o speediness_n of_o death_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o pray_v with_o david_n and_o moses_n that_o god_n will_v enlighten_v our_o mind_n with_o knowledge_n and_o fill_v our_o heart_n with_o his_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v right_o consider_v of_o death_n and_o esteem_v of_o every_o day_n a_o hour_n as_o it_o be_v the_o day_n and_o hour_n of_o death_n the_o second_o duty_n in_o this_o general_a preparation_n be_v that_o every_o man_n must_v daily_o endeavour_v to_o take_v away_o from_o his_o own_o death_n the_o power_n and_o strength_n thereof_o and_o i_o pray_v you_o mark_v this_o point_n the_o philistines_n see_v by_o experience_n that_o samson_n be_v of_o great_a strength_n &_o therefore_o they_o use_v mean_n to_o know_v in_o what_o part_n of_o his_o body_n it_o lay_v &_o when_o they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o hair_n of_o his_o head_n they_o cease_v not_o until_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o in_o like_a manner_n the_o time_n will_v come_v when_o we_o must_v encounter_v hand_n to_o hand_n with_o tyrannous_a and_o cruel_a death_n the_o best_a therefore_o be_v beforehand_o now_o while_o we_o have_v time_n to_o search_v where_o the_o strength_n of_o death_n lie_v which_o be_v once_o know_v we_o must_v with_o speed_n cut_v off_o his_o sampsons_n lock_n and_o bereave_v he_o of_o his_o power_n disarm_v he_o &_o make_v he_o altogether_o unable_a to_o prevail_v against_o us._n now_o to_o find_v out_o this_o matter_n we_o need_v not_o to_o use_v the_o council_n of_o any_o dalilah_n for_o we_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o teach_v we_o plain_o where_o the_o strength_n of_o death_n consist_v nam_o in_o our_o sin_n as_o paul_n say_v the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n well_o then_o we_o know_v certain_o that_o the_o power_n and_o force_v of_o every_o man_n partirular_a death_n lie_v in_o his_o own_o sin_n must_v spend_v our_o time_n and_o study_n in_o use_v good_a mean_n that_o our_o sin_n may_v be_v remove_v and_o pardon_v and_o therefore_o we_o must_v daily_o inure_v ourselves_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o two_o duty_n one_o be_v to_o humble_v ourselves_o for_o all_o our_o sin_n past_a partly_o confess_v they_o against_o ourselves_o partly_o in_o prayer_n cry_v to_o heaven_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o the_o other_o be_v for_o time_n to_o come_v to_o turn_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o carry_v a_o purpose_n resolution_n &_o endeavour_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o reform_v both_o hart_n &_o life_n according_a to_o god_n word_n these_o be_v the_o very_a principal_a &_o proper_a duty_n whereby_o the_o power_n of_o death_n be_v much_o rebate_v &_o he_o be_v make_v of_o a_o mighty_a &_o bloody_a enemy_n so_o far_o forth_o friendly_a and_o tractable_a that_o we_o may_v with_o comfort_n encounter_n with_o he_o &_o prevail_v too_o therefore_o i_o commend_v these_o duty_n to_o your_o christian_n consideration_n &_o careful_a practice_n desire_v that_o you_o will_v spend_v your_o day_n ever_o hereafter_o in_o do_v of_o they_o if_o a_o man_n be_v to_o deal_v with_o a_o mighty_a dragon_n or_o serpent_n hand_n to_o hand_n in_o such_o wise_a as_o he_o must_v either_o kill_v or_o be_v kill_v the_o best_a etc._n etc._n reform_v these_o thy_o sin_n and_o all_o other_o like_a to_o they_o pull_v they_o out_o by_o the_o root_n from_o thy_o heart_n &_o cast_v they_o off_o so_o many_o sin_n as_o be_v in_o thou_o so_o many_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v also_o in_o thou_o to_o wound_v thy_o soul_n to_o eternal_a death_n therefore_o let_v no_o one_o sin_n remain_v for_o which_o thou_o have_v not_o humble_v thyself_o and_o repent_v serious_o when_o death_n hurt_v any_o man_n it_o take_v the_o weapon_n whereby_o he_o be_v hurt_v from_o his_o own_o hand_n it_o can_v do_v we_o the_o least_o hurt_v but_o be_v so_o necessary_a as_o none_o can_v be_v more_o i_o will_v use_v some_o reason_n yet_o further_a to_o enforce_v they_o whatsoever_o a_o man_n will_v do_v when_o he_o be_v die_v the_o same_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v every_o day_n while_o he_o be_v live_v now_o the_o most_o notorious_a and_o wicked_a person_n that_o ever_o be_v when_o he_o be_v die_v will_v pray_v and_o desire_v other_o to_o pray_v for_o he_o &_o promise_v amendment_n of_o life_n protest_v that_o if_o he_o may_v live_v he_o will_v become_v a_o practitioner_n in_o all_o the_o good_a duty_n of_o faith_n repentance_n &_o reformation_n of_o life_n oh_o therefore_o be_v careful_a to_o do_v this_o every_o day_n again_o the_o say_n be_v true_a he_o that_o will_v live_v when_o he_o be_v dead_a must_v die_v while_o he_o righteous_a for_o his_o continual_a purpose_n and_o meaning_n be_v to_o follow_v his_o old_a way_n in_o sorcery_n &_o covetousness_n now_o the_o life_n of_o a_o righteous_a man_n stand_v in_o the_o humble_v of_o himself_o for_o his_o sin_n past_a and_o in_o a_o careful_a reformation_n of_o life_n to_o come_v will_v thou_o then_o die_v the_o death_n of_o the_o righteous_a then_o look_v unto_o it_o that_o thy_o life_n be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o righteous_a if_o you_o will_v needs_o live_v the_o life_n of_o the_o unrighteous_a you_o must_v look_v to_o die_v the_o death_n of_o the_o unrighteous_a remember_v this_o and_o content_v not_o yourselves_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o be_v doer_n of_o it_o for_o you_o learn_v no_o more_o indeed_o what_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n soever_o you_o have_v than_o you_o practice_n the_o three_o duty_n in_o our_o general_a preparation_n be_v in_o this_o life_n to_o enter_v into_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o life_n eternal_a for_o as_o i_o have_v say_v there_o be_v three_o degree_n of_o life_n everlasting_a and_o the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v in_o this_o present_a life_n for_o he_o that_o will_v live_v in_o eternal_a happiness_n for_o ever_o must_v begin_v in_o this_o world_n to_o rise_v out_o of_o the_o grave_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n in_o which_o by_o nature_n he_o lie_v bury_v and_o live_v in_o newness_n of_o life_n as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o revelation_n he_o that_o will_v escape_v the_o second_o death_n 20.6_o must_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o first_o resurrection_n and_o paul_n say_v to_o conference_n with_o the_o physician_n partly_o with_o the_o minister_n about_o his_o soul_n health_n and_o matter_n of_o conscience_n and_o partly_o with_o friend_n that_o come_v to_o visit_v therefore_o there_o must_v some_o preparation_n go_v before_o in_o the_o time_n of_o health_n when_o the_o whole_a man_n with_o all_o the_o power_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n be_v at_o liberty_n again_o there_o be_v some_o other_o which_o imagine_v and_o say_v that_o a_o man_n may_v repent_v when_o he_o will_v even_o in_o the_o time_n of_o death_n and_o that_o such_o repentance_n be_v sufficient_a ans._n it_o be_v false_a which_o they_o say_v for_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o man_n to_o repent_v when_o he_o himself_o will_n when_o god_n will_v he_o may_v it_o be_v not_o in_o he_o that_o will_v or_o run_v but_o in_o god_n that_o have_v mercy_n and_o christ_n say_v that_o many_o shall_v seek_v to_o enter_v into_o heaven_n and_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a but_o why_o so_o the_o whole_a city_n repent_v in_o sackecloath_n and_o ash_n when_o elias_n come_v to_o ahab_n and_o tell_v he_o that_o the_o dog_n shall_v eat_v jesabel_n by_o the_o wall_n of_o jesreel_n &_o he_o also_o of_o ahab_n stock_n that_o die_v in_o the_o city_n etc._n etc._n it_o make_v he_o to_o humble_v himself_o so_o as_o the_o lord_n say_v to_o elias_n see_v thou_o how_o ahab_n be_v humble_v before_o i_o now_o if_o the_o remembrance_n of_o death_n be_v of_o such_o force_n in_o he_o that_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n how_o excellent_a a_o mean_n of_o grace_n will_v it_o be_v in_o they_o that_o true_o repent_v three_o this_o meditation_n seem_v to_o stir_v up_o contentation_n in_o every_o estate_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n that_o shall_v befall_v us._n righteous_a job_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o affliction_n comfort_n himself_o with_o this_o consideration_n naked_a say_v he_o come_v i_o forth_o of_o my_o mother_n womb_n and_o naked_a shall_v i_o return_v again_o &c_n &c_n bless_a be_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o sure_o the_o often_o meditation_n of_o this_o that_o a_o man_n of_o all_o his_o abundance_n can_v carry_v nothing_o with_o he_o but_o either_o a_o coffin_n or_o a_o wind_a sheet_n or_o both_o shall_v be_v a_o forcible_a mean_n to_o repress_v the_o unsatiable_a desire_n of_o riches_n &_o the_o love_n of_o this_o world_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o
