seek_v it_o by_o the_o own_o righteousness_n i._n e._n by_o rest_v in_o their_o own_o work_n which_o indeed_o be_v the_o highway_n to_o hell_n and_o destruction_n as_o well_o as_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n though_o it_o be_v somewhat_o a_o clean_a way_n for_o there_o be_v a_o double_a way_n to_o hell_n the_o way_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o way_n of_o duty_n the_o way_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o filthy_a dirty_a way_n whereas_o the_o way_n of_o duty_n be_v a_o fair_a clean_a way_n i_o mean_v duty_n rest_v in_o be_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o hell_n and_o destruction_n whereupon_o it_o be_v the_o counsel_n of_o luther_n to_o take_v heed_n not_o only_o of_o our_o sin_n but_o also_o of_o our_o duty_n i._n e._n of_o rest_v in_o they_o and_o build_v our_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o they_o therefore_o to_o take_v you_o off_o from_o that_o i_o shall_v commend_v to_o your_o serious_a consideration_n two_o fundamental_a principle_n necessary_a to_o be_v know_v of_o all_o that_o will_v be_v save_v 1_o that_o jesus_n christ_n
be_v the_o only_a way_n and_o mean_n of_o salvation_n 2_o that_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v the_o only_a mean_n of_o partake_v of_o he_o and_o of_o salvation_n by_o he_o as_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n but_o by_o christ_n so_o there_o be_v no_o have_v christ_n and_o salvation_n but_o by_o faith_n 1_o the_o former_a be_v clear_a from_o many_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o first_o from_o that_o know_a place_n 12._o neither_o be_v there_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o etc._n etc._n here_o the_o apostle_n plain_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n but_o by_o christ_n for_o which_o he_o give_v a_o sufficient_a reason_n in_o the_o next_o word_n for_o there_o be_v no_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v imply_v thereby_o that_o in_o our_o best_a duty_n so_o in_o our_o best_a grace_n a_o mixture_n of_o pride_n with_o our_o humility_n of_o hypocrisy_n with_o our_o sincerity_n of_o unbeleef_n with_o our_o faith_n etc._n etc._n i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o christian_n may_v look_v to_o their_o grace_n as_o evidence_n of_o their_o part_n and_o interest_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o salvation_n by_o he_o but_o not_o as_o cause_n of_o their_o salvation_n they_o may_v likewise_o make_v use_n of_o duty_n as_o mean_n to_o bring_v they_o unto_o christ_n but_o not_o to_o be_v save_v by_o they_o christ_n and_o christ_n and_o therefore_o as_o he_o be_v the_o wise_a builder_n who_o build_v his_o house_n upon_o the_o rock_n so_o he_o be_v the_o wise_a christian_a who_o build_v his_o hope_n of_o salvation_n only_o upon_o this_o rock_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n and_o the_o truth_n be_v all_o other_o thing_n beside_o jesus_n christ_n will_v prove_v but_o rot_v and_o sandy_a foundation_n to_o all_o those_o who_o shall_v build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o they_o and_o yet_o how_o many_o foolish_a christian_n be_v there_o who_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o other_o thing_n beside_o jesus_n christ._n as_o 1_o some_o upon_o their_o freedom_n from_o scandalous_a sin_n they_o be_v not_o so_o bad_a as_o other_o man_n and_o thereupon_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o their_o good_a estate_n yea_o and_o hope_v of_o salvation_n which_o be_v the_o deceit_n of_o the_o proud_a pharisee_fw-mi 11._o who_o think_v himself_o a_o good_a man_n because_o he_o be_v not_o so_o bad_a as_o other_o whereas_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v not_o he_o who_o be_v not_o so_o bad_a as_o other_o that_o have_v a_o well-grounded_n hope_v of_o salvation_n but_o he_o who_o go_v curse_v the_o figtree_n which_o have_v leaf_n only_o and_o no_o fruit_n so_o will_v he_o curse_v they_o who_o bear_v the_o leaf_n of_o profession_n but_o want_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n and_o conversation_n and_o it_o be_v like_a to_o fare_v with_o they_o as_o it_o do_v with_o the_o five_o foolish_a virgin_n who_o have_v their_o lamp_n of_o profession_n as_o well_o as_o the_o wise_a virgin_n but_o for_o want_v of_o oil_n in_o their_o lamp_n i._n e._n of_o grace_n in_o their_o heart_n be_v shut_v out_o of_o the_o bride-chamber_n i._n e._n out_o of_o heaven_n which_o be_v the_o bride-chamber_n of_o jesus_n christ._n 4_o other_o build_v and_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o civil_a righteousness_n and_o moral_a honesty_n their_o just_a and_o upright_o deal_n with_o man_n and_o the_o like_a when_o as_o many_o heathen_a who_o have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o fall_v short_a of_o heaven_n have_v go_v further_o in_o morality_n and_o civil_a righteousness_n than_o these_o man_n 5_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o religious_a righteousness_n their_o frequent_a performance_n of_o holy_a and_o religious_a duty_n they_o be_v frequent_a in_o hear_v pray_v read_v partake_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n etc._n etc._n and_o hereupon_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o their_o best_a service_n shall_v they_o be_v weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n will_v be_v find_v too_o light_a and_o insufficient_a to_o salvation_n be_v full_a of_o weakness_n infirmity_n and_o imperfection_n for_o which_o the_o lord_n may_v just_o condemn_v they_o shall_v he_o deal_v with_o they_o according_a to_o the_o rigour_n of_o his_o justice_n 6_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n find_v their_o heart_n in_o some_o measure_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n especial_o rest_n conceive_v that_o christ_n have_v promise_v rest_n and_o peace_n yea_o life_n and_o salvation_n unto_o all_o that_o find_v their_o heart_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n whereas_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o a_o promise_n of_o rest_n and_o salvation_n unto_o humble_a soul_n as_o a_o invitation_n unto_o such_o because_o they_o be_v most_o apt_a to_o be_v discourage_v to_o come_v unto_o christ_n from_o who_o alone_a
