eternal_a life_n to_o those_o who_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n be_v not_o the_o main_a end_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n 1._o because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o end_n ascribe_v to_o his_o death_n which_o the_o death_n of_o no_o other_o person_n in_o the_o world_n can_v in_o any_o wise_a reach_n but_o now_o to_o confirm_v the_o gospel_n and_o all_o the_o promise_v thereof_o be_v a_o end_n which_o the_o death_n of_o another_o may_v reach_v therefore_o this_o be_v not_o the_o main_a end_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ._n the_o crucify_a of_o peter_n the_o martyrdom_n of_o paul_n be_v a_o great_a confirmation_n of_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o preach_v the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o preach_v be_v the_o gospel_n and_o all_o its_o promise_n yet_o neither_o be_v the_o death_n of_o the_o one_o or_o other_o able_a to_o reach_v the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 1._o 18._o be_v paul_n crucify_a for_o you_o or_o be_v you_o baptise_a into_o the_o name_n of_o paul_n none_o can_v be_v crucify_a for_o sinner_n in_o that_o way_n that_o christ_n be_v crucify_a for_o they_o into_o who_o name_n they_o may_v not_o be_v baptise_a but_o into_o the_o name_n of_o no_o mere_a man_n may_v they_o be_v baptise_a therefore_o no_o mere_a man_n can_v be_v crucify_a for_o sinner_n in_o that_o way_n and_o for_o those_o end_n which_o christ_n be_v crucify_a for_o paul_n suffer_v death_n for_o the_o church_n good_a but_o not_o in_o the_o church_n stead_n he_o die_v to_o confirm_v what_o he_o preach_v and_o he_o preach_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n with_o all_o its_o promise_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o crucify_a for_o the_o church_n his_o soul_n be_v not_o make_v a_o offer_n for_o sin_n god_n lay_v not_o upon_o he_o all_o our_o iniquity_n his_o death_n be_v not_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o propitiation_n and_o yet_o all_o this_o may_v be_v say_v of_o paul_n
shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o save_v if_o we_o believe_v and_o obey_v without_o any_o ability_n purchase_v to_o believe_v and_o obey_v 2._o christ_n do_v not_o purchase_v any_o one_o single_a spiritual_a benefit_n for_o we_o as_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o immediate_a and_o proper_a 3._o he_o purchase_v nothing_o but_o that_o he_o may_v lose_v the_o whole_a benefit_n of_o his_o purchase_n acceptation_n with_o god_n a_o contingent_a uncertain_a influence_n it_o may_v have_v upon_o our_o obedience_n but_o none_o at_o all_o upon_o the_o acceptation_n of_o our_o obedience_n a_o act_n of_o love_n to_o god_n be_v as_o welcome_a and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n at_o this_o rate_n without_o christ_n as_o with_o he_o but_o this_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o it_o when_o man_n must_v say_v something_o and_o yet_o can_v tell_v well_o what_o to_o say_v but_o either_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o must_v fly_v in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o they_o hardly_o dare_v do_v or_o else_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n renounce_v their_o belove_a error_n which_o they_o be_v resolve_v never_o to_o do_v then_o must_v the_o scripture_n be_v wrest_v to_o their_o crooked_a sentiment_n instead_o of_o rectify_v their_o crooked_a notion_n by_o the_o straight_a rule_n of_o the_o write_a word_n 2_o have_v now_o inform_v we_o what_o influence_n the_o death_n of_o christ_n have_v upon_o our_o acceptance_n with_o god_n it_o remain_v that_o he_o instruct_v we_o with_o equal_a ingenuity_n what_o influence_n the_o righteousness_n of_o his_o life_n have_v upon_o god_n for_o the_o same_o end_n but_o here_o he_o will_v be_v to_o seek_v for_o have_v assign_v in_o word_n so_o much_o to_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v nothing_o leave_v for_o his_o life_n no_o matter_n upon_o which_o it_o may_v work_v but_o see_v all_o the_o former_a be_v in_o pretence_n there_o be_v employment_n enough_o for_o it_o leave_v still_o though_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o our_o justification_n be_v attribute_v say_v he_o to_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n yet_o i_o can_v never_o persuade_v myself_o that_o this_o whole_o exclude_v the_o perfect_a obedience_n and_o righteousness_n of_o his_o life_n he_o can_v persuade_v himself_o very_o strange_a what_o have_v he_o attempt_v to_o satisfy_v his_o judgement_n about_o the_o exclusion_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o yet_o can_v he_o not_o be_v persuade_v yes_o persuade_v he_o be_v to_o exclude_v it_o but_o not_o whole_o to_o exclude_v it_o there_o be_v some_o rub_n and_o little_a scruple_n in_o the_o way_n that_o he_o can_v not_o get_v over_o but_o have_v he_o improve_v his_o own_o principle_n and_o build_v upon_o his_o own_o foundation_n i_o can_v have_v show_v he_o a_o way_n how_o he_o may_v whole_o whole_o long_o before_o this_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v mighty_o behold_v to_o his_o good_a nature_n that_o when_o by_o his_o principle_n he_o may_v yet_o out_o of_o civility_n he_o will_v not_o and_o therefore_o can_v not_o whole_o exclude_v it_o some_o place_n some_o room_n it_o shall_v have_v some_o remote_a and_o improper_a causality_n as_o the_o next_o to_o nothing_o well_o we_o be_v glad_a of_o a_o little_a till_o we_o can_v get_v more_o for_o because_o he_o be_v belove_v of_o god_n we_o be_v accept_v for_o his_o sake_n that_o be_v high_a and_o surprise_v but_o still_o what_o kind_n of_o cause_n be_v christ_n obedience_n of_o our_o acceptance_n one_o of_o the_o poor_a low_a cause_n in_o the_o world_n be_v one_o that_o they_o nickname_n a_o causa_fw-la sine_fw-la quâ_fw-la non_fw-la which_o yet_o be_v proper_o no_o cause_n at_o all_o and_o yet_o our_o author_n when_o time_n be_v can_v tell_v we_o pag._n 43._o that_o have_v christ_n
