he_o by_o he_o by_o who_o by_o god_n that_o be_v not_o say_v but_o by_o the_o king_n for_o that_o be_v the_o next_o antecedent_n and_o that_o be_v the_o evident_a truth_n of_o the_o case_n inferior_a magistrate_n do_v not_o receive_v their_o power_n from_o god_n but_o from_o the_o king_n who_o have_v the_o sovereign_a power_n in_o himself_o commit_v the_o exercise_n of_o some_o part_n of_o it_o to_o other_o and_o take_v it_o away_o again_o when_o he_o please_v and_o the_o very_a phrase_n of_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d those_o who_o be_v send_v by_o he_o plain_o refer_v it_o to_o those_o who_o be_v send_v by_o the_o emperor_n into_o foreign_a country_n to_o govern_v the_o roman_a province_n such_o as_o pontius_n pilate_n and_o felix_n be_v and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o they_o be_v not_o only_o oblige_v to_o submit_v to_o the_o roman_a emperor_n but_o to_o all_o those_o governor_n who_o they_o send_v to_o rule_v the_o province_n under_o their_o jurisdiction_n which_o be_v no_o more_o than_o for_o a_o preacher_n to_o instruct_v the_o subject_n of_o ireland_n that_o they_o must_v not_o only_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n but_o to_o all_o those_o who_o he_o send_v to_o govern_v they_o with_o the_o power_n and_o authority_n of_o deputy_n or_o lord-lieutenant_n 2._o nay_o st._n peter_n as_o if_o he_o have_v foresee_v this_o objection_n take_v particular_a care_n to_o prevent_v it_o and_o therefore_o make_v a_o apparent_a difference_n between_o that_o submission_n we_o owe_v to_o sovereign_a prince_n and_o that_o which_o we_o owe_v to_o governor_n we_o must_v submit_v to_o the_o king_n as_o supreme_a 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d as_o to_o he_o who_o be_v above_o all_o who_o power_n be_v unaccountable_a and_o irresistible_a but_o to_o governor_n as_o unto_o they_o who_o be_v send_v by_o he_o which_o both_o signify_v the_o reason_n of_o our_o submission_n to_o governor_n and_o prescribe_v the_o bound_n and_o measure_n of_o it_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o must_v submit_v to_o governor_n be_v because_o they_o be_v send_v by_o our_o prince_n they_o act_n by_o his_o authority_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v submit_v to_o and_o reverence_v his_o authority_n in_o they_o it_o be_v not_o for_o their_o own_o sake_n nor_o for_o any_o inherent_a authority_n in_o they_o but_o as_o they_o receive_v their_o power_n from_o our_o prince_n and_o this_o also_o determine_v the_o bound_n and_o measure_n of_o our_o subjection_n to_o governor_n as_o that_o authority_n which_o they_o receive_v from_o the_o king_n be_v the_o only_a reason_n why_o we_o must_v submit_v to_o they_o at_o all_o so_o we_o must_v submit_v no_o long_o than_o that_o authority_n last_v when_o ever_o the_o prince_n recall_v they_o and_o transfer_v this_o power_n to_o another_o we_o must_v obey_v they_o no_o long_o nay_o since_o we_o be_v only_o bind_v to_o reverence_n and_o obey_v the_o authority_n of_o our_o prince_n in_o they_o we_o must_v never_o submit_v to_o they_o in_o opposition_n to_o our_o prince_n our_o primarie_a obligation_n be_v to_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n who_o be_v our_o soveraign-lord_n and_o must_v in_o no_o case_n be_v resist_v our_o submission_n to_o governor_n and_o subordinate_a magistrate_n be_v only_o a_o part_n and_o branch_n of_o our_o duty_n to_o the_o king_n as_o they_o be_v his_o officer_n and_o minister_n and_o therefore_o eit_n can_v never_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o obey_v or_o comply_v with_o subordinate_a magistrate_n but_o only_o when_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o duty_n and_o subjection_n to_o our_o prince_n and_o certain_o it_o be_v no_o act_n of_o subjection_n to_o our_o prince_n to_o obey_v subordinate_a magistrate_n when_o they_o rebel_v against_o their_o prince_n for_o to_o resist_v a_o prince_n or_o to_o join_v with_o those_o who_o do_v resist_v he_o be_v a_o odd_a kind_n of_o instance_n of_o our_o subjection_n to_o he_o this_o be_v not_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n as_o supreme_a nor_o to_o governor_n as_o unto_o those_o who_o be_v send_v by_o he_o and_o receive_v their_o authority_n from_o he_o but_o it_o be_v to_o submit_v to_o governor_n as_o the_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a judge_n of_o our_o prince_n and_o the_o patron_n and_o protector_n of_o the_o people_n against_o their_o prince_n which_o be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o st._n peter_n doctrine_n it_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n for_o the_o governor_n of_o remote_a province_n to_o revolt_v from_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o roman_a emperor_n and_o to_o usurp_v a_o sovereign_n and_o imperial_a authority_n to_o themselves_o and_o therefore_o st._n peter_n express_v their_o duty_n to_o governor_n with_o this_o caution_n and_o limitation_n that_o though_o they_o must_v submit_v to_o those_o who_o the_o emperor_n send_v to_o govern_v they_o yet_o it_o must_v be_v in_o subordination_n to_o the_o imperial_a authority_n and_o with_o a_o reserve_n of_o that_o more_o absolute_a subjection_n which_o they_o owe_v to_o the_o emperor_n himself_o who_o be_v their_o sovereign_a lord_n while_o governor_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o emperor_n who_o be_v their_o lord_n and_o master_n we_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o they_o but_o if_o they_o rebel_v we_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o emperor_n still_o and_o oppose_v those_o who_o we_o be_v before_o bind_v to_o obey_v when_o st._n peter_n so_o express_o command_v they_o both_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n and_o to_o submit_v to_o governor_n it_o be_v impossible_a he_o can_v consider_v the_o king_n and_o governous_a as_o two_o distinct_a and_o rival_a authority_n for_o than_o it_o may_v so_o happen_v that_o they_o can_v not_o submit_v to_o both_o if_o ever_o they_o shall_v oppose_v each_o other_o and_o therefore_o when_o he_o command_v they_o to_o submit_v to_o both_o he_o must_v suppose_v they_o to_o be_v both_o one_o as_o the_o fountain_n and_o the_o stream_n be_v one_o the_o authority_n to_o which_o they_o must_v submit_v be_v but_o one_o it_o be_v original_o in_o the_o king_n as_o in_o its_o source_n and_o fountain_n and_o it_o be_v derive_v and_o communicate_v to_o governor_n but_o be_v the_o same_o power_n still_o which_o as_o necessary_o depend_v upon_o the_o king_n as_o light_n do_v upon_o the_o sun_n and_o therefore_o when_o these_o power_n grow_v two_o when_o this_o derivative_a and_o dependent_a power_n set_v up_o for_o itself_o in_o opposition_n to_o that_o power_n which_o give_v it_o its_o be_v we_o be_v deliver_v from_o our_o subjection_n to_o it_o because_o it_o cease_v to_o be_v one_o with_o that_o sovereign_a power_n to_o which_o we_o must_v be_v subject_a once_o more_o st._n peter_n command_v the_o christian_n to_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n and_o to_o governor_n that_o be_v to_o the_o king_n minister_n who_o receive_v their_o authority_n from_o he_o to_o govern_v but_o when_o such_o person_n rebel_v against_o their_o prince_n who_o give_v they_o authority_n they_o cease_v to_o be_v the_o king_n minister_n and_o governor_n and_o therefore_o cease_v to_o be_v such_o governor_n to_o who_o the_o apostle_n command_v submission_n we_o be_v to_o obey_v they_o while_o they_o be_v the_o king_n minister_n and_o deputy_n but_o when_o they_o assume_v to_o themselves_o a_o independent_a power_n we_o must_v submit_v to_o they_o no_o long_o but_o to_o our_o prince_n we_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o obey_v our_o prince_n and_o those_o magistrate_n who_o he_o set_v over_o we_o but_o we_o can_v submit_v to_o our_o prince_n and_o to_o rebel_n and_o certain_o when_o man_n become_v rebel_n they_o be_v no_o long_o the_o king_n minister_n but_o his_o rival_n 3._o it_o be_v a_o very_a ridiculous_a pretence_n also_o which_o have_v no_o foundation_n in_o st._n peter_n word_n that_o governor_n or_o subordinate_a magistrate_n have_v power_n to_o control_v or_o resist_v their_o sovereign_n prince_n the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o king_n be_v supreme_a but_o over_o who_o be_v he_o supreme_a certain_o over_o all_o in_o his_o dominion_n or_o else_o he_o be_v not_o supreme_a and_o therefore_o he_o be_v supreme_a with_o respect_n to_o subordinate_a magistrate_n as_o well_o as_o private_a subject_n and_o then_o they_o have_v no_o more_o power_n or_o authority_n to_o resist_v than_o any_o private_a subject_n have_v for_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o the_o high_a power_n be_v irresistible_a which_o will_v be_v a_o strange_a paradox_n if_o every_o little_a officer_n have_v authority_n to_o resist_v he_o and_o yet_o if_o man_n will_v grant_v that_o it_o be_v never_o lawful_a for_o any_o private_a man_n to_o resist_v his_o prince_n it_o be_v not_o worth_a dispute_v whether_o subordinate_a magistrate_n may_v or_o not_o for_o if_o private_a man_n must_v not_o resist_v these_o inferior_a magistrate_n can_v or_o at_o least_o they_o will_v resist_v to_o no_o purpose_n he_o may_v make_v they_o private_a man_n
flave_n and_o vassal_n but_o subject_n who_o owe_v all_o duty_n and_o service_n to_o their_o prince_n as_o far_o as_o he_o need_v they_o but_o what_o be_v it_o then_o that_o samuel_n find_v fault_n with_o in_o kingly_a power_n &_o which_o he_o use_v as_o a_o argument_n to_o dissuade_v the_o child_n of_o israel_n from_o desire_v a_o king_n why_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o the_o necessary_a expense_n and_o service_n of_o kingly_a power_n which_o will_v be_v think_v very_o grievous_a to_o they_o who_o be_v a_o free_a people_n and_o at_o that_o time_n subject_a to_o no_o public_a service_n and_o exaction_n the_o government_n they_o then_o live_v under_o be_v no_o charge_n at_o all_o to_o they_o they_o be_v govern_v as_o i_o observe_v before_o either_o by_o their_o high_a priest_n or_o by_o judge_n extraordinary_o raise_v by_o god_n as_o for_o their_o high_a priest_n god_n himself_o have_v allot_v their_o maintenance_n suitable_a to_o the_o quality_n and_o dignity_n of_o their_o office_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v no_o more_o charge_n to_o the_o people_n when_o they_o be_v their_o supreme_a governor_n than_o they_o be_v when_o the_o power_n be_v in_o other_o hand_n either_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o judge_n or_o king_n as_o for_o their_o judge_n who_o god_n raise_v up_o they_o affect_v nothing_o of_o royal_a greatness_n they_o have_v no_o servant_n or_o retinue_n stand_v guard_n or_o army_n to_o maintain_v their_o authority_n which_o be_v secure_v by_o that_o divine_a power_n with_o which_o they_o act_v not_o by_o the_o external_a pomp_n and_o splendour_n of_o a_o court._n thus_o we_o find_v moses_n appeal_n to_o god_n in_o the_o rebellion_n of_o korah_n i_o have_v not_o take_v one_o ass_n from_o they_o neither_o have_v i_o hurt_v any_o of_o they_o 16_o number_n 15._o and_o thus_o samuel_n appeal_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n themselves_o behold_v here_o i_o be_o witness_v against_o i_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o before_o his_o anoint_v who_o ox_n have_v i_o take_v or_o who_o ass_n have_v i_o take_v or_o who_o have_v i_o defraud_v who_o have_v i_o oppress_v or_o of_o who_o hand_n have_v i_o receive_v any_o bribe_n to_o blind_v my_o eye_n therewith_o and_o i_o will_v restore_v it_o 1_o sam._n 12._o 3._o now_o a_o people_n who_o live_v so_o free_a from_o all_o tribute_n exaction_n and_o other_o service_n due_a to_o prince_n must_v needs_o be_v think_v sick_a of_o ease_n and_o liberty_n to_o exchange_v so_o cheap_a so_o free_a a_o state_n for_o the_o necessary_a burden_n and_o expense_n of_o royal_a power_n though_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v necessary_a which_o be_v the_o whole_a of_o samuel_n argument_n not_o that_o kingly_a government_n be_v more_o expensive_a and_o burdensome_a than_o any_o other_o form_n of_o humane_a government_n but_o that_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v a_o new_a burden_n upon_o themselves_o when_o they_o have_v none_o before_o no_o humane_a government_n whether_o democracy_n or_o aristocracy_n can_v subsist_v but_o upon_o the_o public_a charge_n and_o the_o necessary_a expense_n of_o kingly_a power_n be_v not_o great_a than_o of_o a_o commonwealth_n i_o be_o sure_a this_o kingdom_n do_v not_o find_v their_o burden_n ease_v by_o pull_v down_o their_o king_n and_o i_o believe_v whoever_o acquaint_v himself_o with_o the_o several_a form_n of_o government_n will_v find_v kingly_a power_n to_o be_v as_o easy_a upon_o this_o score_n as_o commonwealth_n so_o that_o what_o samuel_n discourse_v here_o and_o which_o some_o man_n think_v so_o great_a a_o reflection_n upon_o kingly_a government_n do_v not_o at_o all_o concern_v we_o but_o be_v peculiar_a to_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o jew_n at_o that_o time_n let_v we_o then_o proceed_v to_o consider_v how_o sacred_a and_o irresistible_a the_o person_n and_o authority_n of_o king_n be_v under_o the_o jewish_a government_n and_o there_o can_v be_v a_o plain_a example_n of_o this_o than_o in_o the_o case_n of_o david_n he_o be_v himself_o anoint_v to_o be_v king_n after_o saul_n death_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v grievous_o persecute_v by_o saul_n pursue_v from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o with_o a_o design_n to_o take_v away_o his_o life_n how_o now_o do_v david_n behave_v himself_o in_o this_o extremity_n what_o course_n do_v he_o take_v to_o secure_v himself_o from_o saul_n why_o he_o take_v the_o only_a course_n that_o be_v leave_v a_o subject_a he_o fly_v for_o it_o and_o hide_v himself_o from_o saul_n in_o the_o mountain_n and_o cave_n of_o the_o wilderness_n and_o when_o he_o find_v he_o be_v discover_v in_o one_o place_n he_o remove_v to_o another_o he_o keep_v spy_n upon_o saul_n to_o observe_v his_o motion_n not_o that_o he_o may_v meet_v he_o to_o give_v he_o battle_n or_o to_o take_v he_o at_o a_o advantage_n but_o that_o he_o may_v keep_v out_o of_o his_o way_n and_o not_o fall_v unaware_o into_o his_o hand_n well_o but_o this_o be_v no_o thanks_o to_o david_n because_o he_o can_v do_v no_o otherwise_o he_o be_v too_o weak_a for_o saul_n and_o not_o able_a to_o stand_v against_o he_o and_o therefore_o have_v no_o other_o remedy_n but_o flight_n but_o yet_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o david_n be_v a_o man_n of_o war_n he_o slay_v goliath_n and_o fight_v the_o battle_n of_o israel_n with_o great_a success_n he_o be_v a_o admire_a and_o belove_a captain_n which_o make_v saul_n so_o jealous_a of_o he_o the_o eye_n of_o israel_n be_v upon_o he_o for_o their_o next_o king_n and_o how_o easy_o may_v he_o have_v raise_v a_o potent_a and_o formidable_a rebellion_n against_o saul_n but_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o this_o that_o he_o invite_v no_o man_n to_o his_o assistance_n and_o when_o some_o come_v uninvited_a he_o make_v no_o use_n of_o they_o in_o a_o offensive_a or_o defensive_a war_n against_o saul_n nay_o when_o god_n deliver_v saul_n two_o several_a time_n into_o david_n hand_n that_o he_o can_v as_o easy_o have_v kill_v he_o as_o have_v cut_v off_o the_o skirt_n of_o his_o garment_n at_o engedi_n 1_o sam._n 24._o or_o as_o have_v take_v that_o spear_n away_o which_o stick_v in_o the_o ground_n at_o his_o bolster_n as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o hill_n of_o hachilah_n 1_o sam._n 26._o yet_o he_o will_v neither_o touch_v saul_n himself_o nor_o suffer_v any_o of_o the_o people_n that_o be_v with_o he_o to_o do_v it_o though_o they_o be_v very_o importunate_a with_o he_o for_o liberty_n to_o kill_v saul_n nay_o though_o they_o urge_v he_o with_o a_o argument_n from_o providence_n that_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a evidence_n that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o he_o shall_v kill_v saul_n because_o god_n have_v now_o deliver_v his_o enemy_n into_o his_o hand_n according_a to_o the_o promise_n he_o have_v make_v to_o david_n 1_o sam._n 24._o 4._o 26_o ch_n ver_fw-la 8._o we_o know_v what_o use_v some_o man_n have_v make_v of_o this_o argument_n of_o providence_n to_o justify_v all_o the_o villainy_n they_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o act_v but_o david_n it_o seem_v do_v not_o think_v that_o a_o opportunity_n of_o do_v evil_a give_v he_o licence_n and_o authority_n to_o do_v it_o opportunity_n we_o say_v make_v a_o thief_n and_o it_o make_v a_o rebel_n and_o it_o make_v a_o murderer_n no_o man_n can_v do_v any_o wickedness_n which_o he_o have_v no_o opportunity_n of_o do_v and_o if_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n which_o put_v such_o opportunity_n into_o man_n hand_n justify_v the_o wickedness_n they_o commit_v no_o man_n can_v be_v chargeable_a with_o any_o guilt_n whatever_o he_o do_v and_o certain_o opportunity_n will_v as_o soon_o justify_v any_o other_o sin_n as_o rebellion_n and_o the_o murder_n of_o prince_n we_o be_v to_o learn_v our_o duty_n from_o the_o law_n of_o god_n not_o from_o his_o providence_n at_o least_o this_o must_v be_v a_o settle_a principle_n that_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n will_v never_o justify_v any_o action_n which_o his_o law_n forbid_v and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o this_o opportunity_n which_o god_n have_v put_v into_o his_o hand_n to_o destroy_v his_o enemy_n and_o to_o take_v the_o crown_n for_o his_o reward_n david_n consider_v his_o duty_n remember_v that_o though_o saul_n be_v his_o enemy_n and_o that_o very_o unjust_o yet_o he_o be_v the_o lord_n anoint_v the_o lord_n forbid_v say_v he_o that_o i_o shall_v do_v this_o unto_o my_o master_n the_o lord_n anoint_v to_o stretch_v forth_o my_o hand_n against_o he_o see_v he_o be_v the_o lord_n anoint_v nay_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o take_v away_o his_o life_n that_o his_o heart_n smore_o he_o for_o cut_v off_o the_o skirt_n of_o his_o garment_n and_o we_o ought_v to_o observe_v the_o reason_n david_n give_v why_o he_o dare_v not_o hurt_v saul_n because_o he_o
and_o practise_v about_o obedience_n to_o sovereign_a prince_n whereby_o we_o may_v learn_v how_o far_a christian_n be_v oblige_v by_o these_o law_n of_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n 1._o i_o shall_v distinct_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n while_o he_o live_v on_o earth_n and_o here_o be_v several_a thing_n very_o fit_a to_o be_v observe_v 1._o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o improbable_a that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v make_v any_o alteration_n in_o civil_a power_n or_o abridge_v the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n which_o be_v so_o foreign_a to_o his_o design_n of_o come_v all_o for_o to_o give_v liberty_n to_o subject_n to_o resist_v be_v only_o to_o proclaim_v a_o universal_a licence_n to_o faction_n and_o sedition_n and_o civil_a war_n and_o if_o any_o man_n can_v think_v this_o such_o a_o mighty_a blessing_n to_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o think_v it_o be_v not_o a_o blessing_n proper_a for_o the_o prince_n of_o peace_n to_o give_v but_o he_o who_o instruct_v sake_n shall_v have_v their_o injury_n redress_v and_o their_o obedience_n reward_v i_o say_v such_o a_o person_n as_o this_o take_v a_o more_o effectual_a course_n to_o reform_v the_o abuse_n of_o civil_a power_n and_o to_o preserve_v good_a government_n in_o the_o world_n than_o all_o our_o wise_a politician_n and_o state-mender_n who_o think_v to_o reform_v the_o government_n of_o the_o that_o can_v be_v do_v nay_o this_o be_v all_o that_o he_o can_v do_v in_o this_o matter_n he_o never_o usurp_v any_o civil_a power_n and_o authority_n and_o therefore_o can_v not_o new_a model_n the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n he_o never_o offer_v any_o external_a force_n and_o compulsion_n to_o make_v man_n obey_v his_o law_n and_o therefore_o neither_o force_n prince_n to_o rule_v well_o nor_o subject_n to_o obey_v but_o he_o have_v take_v the_o same_o care_n of_o the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n as_o he_o have_v do_v of_o all_o the_o other_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n that_o be_v he_o have_v give_v very_o good_a law_n and_o threaten_v those_o who_o break_v they_o with_o eternal_a punishment_n and_o as_o the_o law_n and_o religion_n of_o our_o saviour_n prevail_v so_o will_v the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n mend_v without_o alter_v the_o model_n and_o constitution_n of_o they_o 2._o but_o yet_o we_o have_v some_o positive_a evidence_n what_o our_o saviour_n teach_v about_o obedience_n to_o the_o high_a power_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o two_o instance_n of_o it_o which_o be_v as_o plain_a and_o express_v as_o can_v be_v desire_v 1._o the_o first_o be_v that_o answer_v our_o saviour_n give_v to_o the_o pharisee_n and_o herodian_o when_o they_o consult_v together_o to_o entangle_v he_o in_o his_o talk_n 22_o matth._n 15._o etc._n etc._n they_o come_v to_o he_o with_o great_a ceremony_n and_o address_n as_o to_o a_o infallible_a oracle_n to_o consult_v he_o in_o a_o very_a weighty_a case_n of_o conscience_n they_o express_v a_o great_a esteem_n and_o assurance_n of_o his_o sincerity_n and_o faithfulness_n and_o courage_n as_o well_o as_o of_o his_o unerring_a judgement_n in_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o they_o master_n we_o know_v that_o thou_o be_v true_a and_o teach_v the_o way_n of_o god_n in_o truth_n neither_o care_v thou_o for_o any_o man_n for_o thou_o regard_v not_o the_o person_n
all_o case_n to_o give_v to_o caesar_n what_o be_v coesar_n due_a and_o when_o our_o saviour_n command_v we_o to_o render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesar_n without_o tell_v we_o what_o coesar_n thing_n be_v this_o be_v so_o far_o from_o make_v his_o answer_n doubtful_a and_o ambiguous_a and_o of_o no_o use_n in_o this_o present_a controversy_n that_o it_o suggest_v to_o we_o three_o plain_a and_o natural_a consequence_n which_o be_v sufficient_a to_o end_v this_o whole_a dispute_n 1._o that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o make_v any_o alteration_n in_o the_o right_n of_o sovereignty_n but_o what_o right_n he_o find_v sovereign_a prince_n possess_v of_o he_o leave_v they_o in_o the_o quiet_a possession_n of_o for_o have_v he_o intend_v to_o make_v any_o change_n in_o this_o matter_n he_o will_v not_o have_v give_v such_o a_o general_a rule_n to_o render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesar_n without_o specify_v what_o these_o thing_n be_v 2._o and_o therefore_o he_o leave_v they_o to_o the_o know_a law_n of_o the_o empire_n to_o determine_v what_o be_v coesar_n right_a whatever_o be_v essential_a to_o the_o notion_n of_o sovera_v power_n whatever_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n of_o nation_n determine_v to_o be_v coesar_n right_a that_o they_o must_v render_v to_o he_o for_o he_o will_v make_v no_o alteration_n in_o this_o matter_n so_o that_o subjection_n to_o prince_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v as_o plain_o determine_v by_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o law_n as_o pay_v tribute_n for_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v as_o essential_a a_o right_n of_o sovereign_a power_n and_o as_o inseparable_a from_o the_o notion_n of_o it_o as_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v so_o it_o be_v acknowledge_v by_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n of_o nation_n and_o so_o it_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o apostle_n st._n paul_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v hereafter_o 3._o i_o observe_v far_o that_o when_o our_o saviour_n join_v our_o duty_n to_o our_o prince_n with_o our_o duty_n to_o our_o god_n render_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v coesars_n and_o to_o god_n the_o thing_n which_o be_v god_n he_o except_v nothing_o from_o coesar_n right_a which_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nation_n be_v due_a to_o sovereign_a prince_n but_o what_o be_v a_o violation_n of_o and_o a_o encroachment_n on_o god_n right_a and_o sovereignty_n that_o be_v we_o must_v pay_v all_o that_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n which_o be_v consistent_a with_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n this_o be_v the_o only_a limit_n our_o saviour_n set_v to_o our_o duty_n to_o prince_n if_o they_o shall_v command_v we_o to_o renounce_v our_o religion_n and_o worship_v false_a god_n if_o they_o shall_v challenge_v divine_a honour_n to_o themselves_o as_o some_o of_o the_o roman_a emperor_n do_v this_o we_o must_v not_o do_v because_o it_o be_v to_o renounce_v obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o god_n who_o have_v a_o more_o sovereign_a power_n and_o a_o great_a right_n in_o we_o than_o our_o prince_n but_o all_o active_a and_o passive_a obedience_n which_o be_v consistent_a with_o a_o good_a conscience_n towards_o god_n and_o require_v of_o we_o by_o the_o law_n of_o our_o country_n and_o the_o essential_a right_n of_o sovereignty_n be_v what_o we_o owe_v to_o our_o prince_n and_o what_o by_o our_o saviour_n command_n we_o must_v render_v to_o he_o this_o i_o hope_n be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o explication_n of_o our_o saviour_n answer_n to_o the_o pharisee_n and_o herodian_o which_o evident_o contain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o prince_n enforce_v on_o we_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o our_o saviour_n himself_o 2._o our_o saviour_n rebuke_n to_o st._n peter_n when_o he_o draw_v his_o sword_n and_o strike_v a_o servant_n of_o the_o high_a priest_n and_o smite_v off_o his_o ear_n be_v as_o plain_a a_o declaration_n against_o resistance_n as_o word_n can_v make_v it_o 26_o mat._n 52._o then_o say_v jesus_n unto_o he_o put_v up_o thy_o sword_n into_o his_o place_n for_o all_o they_o that_o take_v the_o sword_n shall_v perish_v with_o the_o sword_n for_o the_o understanding_n of_o which_o we_o must_v consider_v upon_o what_o occasion_n st._n peter_n draw_v his_o sword_n for_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o our_o saviour_n do_v absolute_o forbid_v the_o use_n of_o the_o appear_v from_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n which_o the_o apostle_n there_o recommend_v to_o our_o imitation_n who_o be_v the_o most_o innocent_a person_n in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o suffer_v religion_n now_o hence_o there_o be_v two_o plain_a consequent_n 1._o that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o thing_n of_o very_o good_a repute_n in_o the_o world_n or_o else_o it_o can_v be_v no_o credit_n to_o christianity_n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o great_a virtue_n because_o all_o man_n speak_v well_o of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o good_a report_n and_o therefore_o become_v christian_n 4_o phil._n 8._o 2._o it_o hence_o follow_v also_o that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o stand_a doctrine_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n because_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o they_o shall_v recommend_v christianity_n to_o the_o world_n by_o subjection_n to_o prince_n but_o certain_o god_n never_o intend_v they_o shall_v put_v a_o cheat_n upon_o the_o world_n and_o recommend_v christianity_n to_o they_o by_o that_o which_o be_v no_o part_n nor_o duty_n of_o christianity_n this_o be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o confute_v that_o vain_a pretence_n that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n oblige_v christian_n only_o while_o they_o be_v unable_a to_o resist_v and_o defend_v themselves_o and_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o satisfy_v we_o what_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v about_o subjection_n to_o prince_n as_o for_o their_o example_n i_o think_v there_o be_v never_o any_o dispute_n about_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_o know_v that_o they_o suffer_v martyrdom_n as_o a_o vast_a number_n of_o christian_n in_o that_o and_o some_o follow_a age_n do_v without_o either_o reproach_v their_o governor_n or_o rebel_a against_o they_o and_o this_o they_o do_v as_o they_o teach_v other_o to_o do_v not_o mere_o because_o they_o can_v not_o resist_v but_o out_o of_o duty_n and_o reverence_n to_o god_n who_o set_v prince_n on_o throne_n and_o have_v give_v they_o a_o sacred_a and_o inviolable_a authority_n and_o in_o imitation_n of_o their_o great_a lord_n and_o master_n who_o go_v as_o a_o lamb_n to_o the_o slaughter_n and_o as_o a_o sheep_n before_o the_o shearer_n be_v dumb_a so_o he_o open_v not_o his_o mouth_n chap._n vi_o a_o answer_n to_o the_o most_o popular_a objection_n against_o nonresistance_n i_o proceed_v now_o to_o consider_v those_o objection_n which_o be_v make_v against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o nonresistance_n though_o methinks_v after_o such_o plain_a and_o convince_a proof_n that_o nonresistance_n be_v the_o doctrine_n both_o of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n though_o witty_a man_n may_v be_v able_a to_o start_v some_o objection_n yet_o wise_a and_o good_a man_n shall_v not_o regard_v they_o for_o no_o objection_n be_v of_o any_o force_n against_o a_o plain_a and_o express_a law_n of_o god_n indeed_o when_o we_o have_v no_o evidence_n for_o a_o thing_n but_o only_o natural_a reason_n and_o the_o reason_n seem_v to_o be_v equal_o strong_a and_o cogent_a on_o both_o side_n it_o render_v the_o matter_n very_o doubtful_a on_o which_o side_n the_o truth_n lie_v but_o when_o on_o one_o side_n there_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o express_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o show_n and_o appearance_n of_o reason_n i_o think_v there_o can_v be_v no_o dispute_n which_o side_n we_o choose_v unless_o any_o man_n think_v it_o doubtful_a which_o be_v the_o most_o certain_a and_o infallible_a rule_n scripture_n or_o mere_a natural_a reason_n and_o therefore_o till_o man_n can_v answer_v that_o scripture-evidence_n which_o i_o have_v produce_v which_o i_o be_o not_o much_o concern_v about_o for_o i_o guess_v it_o will_v take_v they_o up_o some_o time_n to_o do_v it_o all_o their_o other_o objection_n whether_o i_o can_v answer_v they_o or_o not_o signify_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o i_o and_o aught_o to_o signify_v as_o little_a to_o any_o man_n who_o reverence_v the_o scripture_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v their_o objection_n for_o they_o be_v not_o so_o formidable_a that_o we_o need_v be_v afraid_a of_o they_o now_o i_o know_v no_o body_n but_o will_v acknowledge_v that_o in_o most_o case_n it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o subject_n not_o to_o resist_v their_o prince_n but_o they_o only_o pretend_v that_o this_o be_v not_o their_o duty_n when_o their_o prince_n oppress_v and_o persecute_v they_o contrary_a to_o law_n when_o their_o life_n and_o liberty_n and_o property_n and_o religion_n be_v all_o secure_v by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n they_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v tame_o suffer_v a_o prince_n to_o usurp_v upon_o they_o why_o they_o shall_v not_o defend_v themselves_o against_o all_o unjust_a and_o illegal_a violence_n and_o they_o urge_v several_a argument_n to_o prove_v that_o they_o may_v do_v so_o which_o may_v be_v reduce_v to_o these_o five_o 1._o that_o they_o be_v bind_v by_o no_o law_n to_o suffer_v against_o law_n 2._o that_o the_o prince_n have_v no_o authority_n against_o law_n 3._o that_o they_o have_v a_o natural_a right_n of_o self-defence_n against_o unjust_a violence_n 4._o that_o otherwise_o we_o destroy_v the_o distinction_n between_o a_o absolute_a and_o limit_a monarch_n between_o a_o prince_n who_o will_n be_v his_o law_n and_o a_o prince_n who_o be_v bind_v to_o govern_v by_o law_n which_o undermine_v the_o fundamental_a constitution_n of_o the_o english_a government_n 5._o that_o if_o resistance_n in_o no_o case_n be_v allow_v the_o mischief_n and_o inconvenience_n to_o mankind_n may_v be_v intolerable_a i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v
