true_a those_o very_a man_n that_o be_v so_o very_o scrupulous_a and_o so_o very_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n in_o this_o yet_o appear_v open_o regardless_o and_o proof_n against_o all_o fear_n of_o it_o in_o other_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v fear_v there_o be_v too_o many_o man_n on_o one_o hand_n that_o can_v live_v and_o persist_v obstinate_o in_o plain_a schism_n allow_v themselves_o in_o rebellion_n and_o the_o most_o factious_a course_n oppose_v government_n speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n pride_n and_o uncharitableness_n judge_v and_o rash_a censure_v of_o their_o brethren_n fraud_n and_o hypocrisy_n injustice_n and_o knavery_n and_o all_o sort_n of_o such_o spiritual_a vice_n as_o these_o without_o the_o least_o remorse_n and_o i_o will_v to_o god_n i_o can_v not_o say_v as_o true_o that_o there_o be_v too_o many_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n that_o will_v allow_v themselves_o in_o open_a debauchery_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o raillery_n and_o profaneness_n of_o intemperance_n and_o uncleanness_n of_o whoredom_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o that_o curse_a humour_n of_o swear_v which_o have_v obtain_v so_o among_o we_o to_o the_o shame_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o for_o which_o it_o mourn_v there_o be_v too_o many_o i_o say_v of_o both_o sort_n that_o live_v without_o any_o apprehension_n or_o fear_n of_o damnation_n in_o these_o thing_n who_o yet_o when_o invite_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o reprove_v for_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o seem_v wonderful_a scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n if_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o it_o and_o think_v to_o excuse_v the_o neglect_n of_o one_o with_o their_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o which_o they_o always_o plead_v in_o vindication_n of_o it_o now_o i_o appeal_v to_o the_o reason_n of_o all_o man_n whether_o this_o be_v fair_a and_o honest_a deal_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v not_o plain_a collusion_n and_o subterfuge_n be_v there_o any_o true_a reason_n to_o fear_v damnation_n here_o which_o yet_o i_o have_v show_v there_o be_v not_o yet_o man_n be_v not_o just_a and_o fair_a in_o pretend_v so_o much_o fear_n of_o it_o in_o this_o and_o yet_o surmount_v so_o easy_o that_o fear_n in_o other_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o before_o in_o this_o discourse_n often_o and_o i_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o tell_v it_o you_o again_o that_o it_o be_v a_o bad_a sign_n to_o see_v man_n scrupulous_a only_o in_o some_o few_o thing_n and_o there_o be_v not_o a_o plain_a mark_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n than_o to_o be_v rich_a and_o fearful_a of_o sin_n and_o damnation_n in_o some_o lesser_a thing_n but_o venturous_a and_o regardless_o of_o it_o in_o other_o that_o be_v perhaps_o far_o great_a it_o be_v this_o which_o our_o saviour_n so_o often_o charge_v upon_o the_o pharisee_n and_o for_o which_o he_o so_o sharp_o condemn_v they_o as_o a_o pack_n of_o fulsome_a errant_a hypocrite_n and_o man_n have_v need_v to_o look_v to_o it_o for_o they_o will_v draw_v upon_o themselves_o the_o same_o imputation_n if_o they_o be_v of_o the_o same_o temper_n and_o practice_n if_o the_o fear_n of_o damnation_n therefore_o influence_n you_o in_o this_o one_o let_v it_o in_o god_n name_n do_v so_o in_o other_o instance_n that_o be_v more_o gross_a and_o obvious_a if_o the_o fear_n of_o damnation_n in_o this_o be_v true_a and_o sincere_a it_o will_v do_v this_o for_o damnation_n be_v still_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o equal_o to_o be_v dread_v but_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o be_v plain_a you_o use_v it_o as_o subterfuge_n and_o artifice_v you_o proclaim_v your_o own_o insincerity_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o it_o and_o the_o excuse_n itself_o not_o only_o aggravate_v but_o become_v part_n of_o the_o crime_n i_o have_v add_v this_o consideration_n only_a ex_fw-la abundanti_fw-la and_o to_o argue_v with_o some_o man_n even_o upon_o their_o own_o pretence_n and_o if_o they_o will_v honest_o reflect_v upon_o it_o it_o will_v hardly_o fail_v of_o some_o effect_n on_o they_o but_o to_o other_o that_o be_v real_o scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n upon_o every_o failure_n to_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o argue_v their_o fear_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o text_n to_o these_o i_o say_v the_o former_a consideration_n will_v be_v sufficient_a since_o it_o be_v not_o this_o eternal_a damnation_n that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o let_v i_o add_v that_o if_o eternal_a damnation_n be_v not_o threaten_v to_o the_o corinthian_n here_o who_o so_o shameful_o and_o gross_o profane_v this_o holy_a service_n much_o less_o be_v it_o present_o to_o be_v fear_v by_o those_o who_o receive_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v though_o not_o so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v if_o so_o extreme_a gross_a and_o scandalous_a a_o profanation_n be_v not_o threaten_v with_o it_o sure_o every_o small_a failure_n need_v not_o fear_v it_o chap._n vii_o i_o advance_v now_o to_o the_o four_o consideration_n which_o i_o propose_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o present_a collection_n viz._n that_o whatever_o sin_n or_o guilt_n there_o be_v in_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o there_o be_v the_o same_o yea_o there_o be_v great_a in_o not_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o this_o rely_v upon_o a_o reason_n that_o i_o have_v make_v good_a already_o and_o that_o be_v that_o eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a indispensible_a duty_n tie_v immediate_o upon_o all_o christian_n by_o the_o command_n of_o their_o lord_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o reason_n which_o will_v ever_o have_v effect_n upon_o all_o those_o that_o have_v any_o love_n and_o respect_n to_o he_o yea_o which_o will_v still_o improve_v and_o in_o every_o age_n grow_v strong_a and_o strong_a i_o shall_v not_o and_o i_o hope_v i_o need_v not_o resume_v this_o argument_n because_o i_o have_v and_o according_o do_v practice_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o up_o as_o a_o stand_a service_n in_o the_o church_n as_o soon_o as_o ever_o they_o have_v gather_v one_o and_o the_o member_n of_o this_o church_n continue_v daily_o in_o the_o observance_n of_o it_o as_o well_o as_o prayer_n from_o all_o which_o if_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v plain_a this_o be_v so_o that_o christ_n intend_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n to_o be_v a_o constant_a stand_a service_n in_o his_o church_n and_o that_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a christian_n do_v according_o observe_v and_o keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o and_o this_o too_o as_o careful_o and_o constant_o as_o the_o public_a prayer_n and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o evince_v it_o to_o be_v every_o christian_n duty_n to_o observe_v it_o yea_o to_o observe_v it_o as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o public_a service_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n nothing_o be_v and_o nothing_o can_v be_v so_o and_o since_o we_o be_v engage_v again_o on_o this_o subject_a let_v i_o add_v s._n paul_n represent_v of_o this_o matter_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n 1_o cor._n 11.23_o 24_o 25._o i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o shall_v set_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o among_o the_o gentile_n as_o well_o as_o they_o in_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n i_o e._n in_o plain_a term_n that_o all_o both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n that_o shall_v embrace_v his_o religion_n shall_v equal_o practice_v this_o as_o a_o standing_z and_o constant_a service_n in_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o both_o these_o church_n do_v according_o observe_v and_o practice_v the_o same_o sect_n i._o but_o then_o lest_o it_o shall_v be_v think_v a_o temporary_a transient_a institution_n only_o which_o be_v to_o continue_v only_o while_o the_o apostle_n live_v or_o some_o little_a time_n after_o as_o some_o few_o other_o thing_n be_v therefore_o i_o observe_v in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o reason_n with_o which_o this_o institution_n of_o christ_n be_v back_v and_o what_o our_o lord_n have_v declare_v to_o be_v the_o great_a end_n and_o purpose_n of_o it_o now_o this_o be_v express_v in_o these_o word_n in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o which_o reason_n do_v clear_o show_v this_o precept_n to_o be_v no_o temporary_a one_o only_o but_o to_o be_v even_o moral_o and_o perpetual_o oblige_v 1._o i_o think_v i_o may_v say_v moral_o for_o the_o pious_a grateful_a devout_a and_o joyful_a remembrance_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o of_o his_o great_a love_n in_o what_o he_o undertake_v and_o undergo_v for_o our_o sake_n be_v a_o instance_n sure_o of_o moral_a justice_n and_o as_o indispensible_o and_o everlasting_o due_a from_o we_o as_o gratitude_n be_v to_o a_o great_a benefactor_n or_o any_o instance_n of_o natural_a religion_n be_v to_o god_n and_o certain_o he_o that_o think_v otherwise_o dishonour_n and_o disparage_v this_o love_n and_o make_v himself_o for_o ever_o unworthy_a of_o it_o if_o ever_o any_o love_n be_v worthy_a to_o be_v remember_v if_o ever_o any_o thing_n that_o god_n do_v for_o man_n deserve_v and_o may_v in_o justice_n challenge_v our_o high_a gratitude_n and_o praise_n this_o certain_o do_v and_o i_o will_v to_o god_n that_o some_o man_n will_v remember_v this_o and_o remember_v this_o too_o how_o they_o can_v hope_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o neglect_v to_o remember_v it_o and_o to_o remember_v it_o by_o that_o which_o himself_o have_v appoint_v to_o be_v the_o solemn_a rite_n of_o that_o commemoration_n 2._o i_o say_v perpetual_o oblige_v too_o and_o this_o i_o say_v now_o not_o only_o upon_o the_o former_a reason_n that_o its_o end_n be_v a_o moral_a good_a and_o reason_n to_o remember_v the_o love_n of_o our_o die_a lord_n for_o that_o love_n will_v always_o appear_v the_o same_o and_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o will_v continue_v the_o same_o too_o so_o that_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o service_n will_v in_o every_o age_n continue_v the_o same_o but_o there_o be_v another_o consideration_n which_o will_v make_v it_o to_o improve_v and_o grow_v strong_a and_o strong_a for_o time_n be_v a_o grand_a consumer_n and_o waster_n of_o thing_n and_o the_o memory_n of_o the_o great_a kindness_n and_o blessing_n in_o a_o long_a tract_n of_o time_n be_v apt_a to_o decay_v and_o wear_v off_o of_o man_n mind_n so_o that_o the_o further_a that_o man_n live_v off_o from_o the_o time_n of_o our_o saviour_n passion_n the_o more_o danger_n they_o be_v in_o of_o forget_v it_o and_o the_o more_o need_n they_o have_v of_o something_o to_o fix_v it_o the_o more_o deep_o and_o indelible_o upon_o their_o mind_n so_o that_o this_o reason_n will_v still_o improve_v and_o we_o therefore_o that_o live_v at_o this_o distance_n of_o sixteen_o hundred_o year_n from_o it_o have_v need_n to_o be_v more_o observant_a of_o this_o institution_n to_o refresh_v our_o memory_n than_o they_o that_o live_v but_o a_o very_a few_o year_n or_o day_n after_o it_o and_o so_o every_o age_n that_o shall_v succeed_v we_o will_v have_v more_o need_v still_o till_o the_o final_a dissolution_n when_o the_o lord_n shall_v come_v as_o s._n paul_n speak_v when_o we_o shall_v see_v he_o who_o we_o now_o commemorate_v and_o have_v all_o our_o pious_a act_n of_o remember_v three_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o easy_a to_o be_v obey_v not_o in_o the_o least_o chargeable_a or_o burdensome_a as_o some_o such_o institution_n before_o be_v nor_o in_o any_o measure_n more_o difficult_a than_o any_o other_o service_n in_o our_o religion_n be_v but_o i_o will_v not_o enlarge_v upon_o these_o here_o because_o i_o have_v do_v it_o former_o in_o another_o place_n and_o in_o day_n for_o if_o it_o have_v there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o he_o will_v have_v give_v some_o plain_a intimation_n of_o it_o or_o at_o least_o have_v say_v something_o from_o whence_o man_n may_v have_v collect_v that_o to_o be_v his_o meaning_n we_o can_v suppose_v that_o he_o will_v have_v be_v silent_a in_o so_o very_o great_a and_o concern_v a_o case_n and_o not_o have_v give_v man_n some_o warning_n rather_o than_o let_v they_o run_v on_o in_o a_o fact_n which_o be_v sure_a to_o pull_v down_o such_o judgement_n upon_o their_o head_n it_o seem_v plain_a the_o apostle_n have_v no_o such_o thought_n of_o this_o matter_n then_o as_o some_o man_n have_v now_o he_o never_o think_v that_o the_o sin_n or_o danger_n of_o do_v a_o duty_n amiss_o may_v be_v make_v a_o exception_n against_o do_v it_o at_o all_o or_o that_o threaten_a damnation_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o shall_v scare_v man_n from_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o he_o take_v what_o care_n he_o can_v that_o the_o duty_n may_v be_v perform_v and_o the_o error_n in_o do_v it_o effectual_o reform_v but_o he_o never_o make_v the_o danger_n of_o the_o one_o a_o dispensation_n from_o the_o other_o nor_o of_o the_o apostle_n and_o this_o last_o name_v circumstance_n relate_v to_o it_o be_v this_o that_o therefore_o the_o care_n possibility_n and_o fear_v of_o eat_v unworthy_o shall_v not_o be_v think_v a_o sufficient_a plea_n for_o not_o eat_v at_o all_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o allow_v or_o encourage_v man_n to_o stay_v away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n when_o they_o do_v great_o profane_v it_o when_o they_o do_v eat_v unworthy_o in_o the_o gross_a sense_n much_o less_o than_o may_v man_n stay_v away_o from_o it_o only_o upon_o a_o suspicion_n and_o fear_n of_o this_o and_o as_o they_o shall_v do_v this_o i_o confess_v be_v a_o negative_a argument_n which_o be_v not_o always_o and_o in_o all_o case_n good_a and_o conclude_a yet_o in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o it_o certain_o be_v so_o if_o a_o thing_n be_v no_o where_o say_v in_o scripture_n which_o if_o it_o be_v true_a be_v very_o necessary_a and_o import_v to_o be_v know_v and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o say_v there_o where_o it_o be_v very_o proper_a and_o necessary_a it_o shall_v have_v be_v say_v then_o we_o may_v from_o that_o silence_n of_o the_o scripture_n conclude_v against_o it_o if_o we_o deny_v this_o argument_n we_o shall_v hardly_o be_v able_a to_o make_v good_a the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o the_o inspire_a penman_n of_o it_o we_o must_v be_v force_v to_o entertain_v mean_a thought_n of_o the_o great_a s._n paul_n if_o we_o can_v think_v that_o he_o know_v of_o any_o such_o thing_n and_o yet_o will_v not_o reveal_v it_o when_o there_o be_v so_o fair_a a_o opportunity_n for_o do_v so_o and_o when_o it_o be_v so_o very_o necessary_a and_o of_o such_o advantage_n to_o be_v know_v 2._o but_o i_o shall_v proceed_v to_o add_v some_o other_o consideration_n which_o will_v be_v as_o so_o many_o rational_a argument_n for_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o present_a collection_n which_o be_v the_o second_o way_n that_o i_o promise_v to_o make_v it_o good_a by_o i_o shall_v insist_v upon_o these_o five_o that_o follow_v 1._o our_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o plain_a necessary_a duty_n 2._o the_o possibility_n of_o do_v it_o amiss_o be_v no_o great_a than_o of_o our_o do_v other_o duty_n of_o religion_n amiss_o which_o yet_o we_o ourselves_o count_v necessary_a to_o be_v do_v and_o do_v keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o 3._o the_o punishment_n or_o danger_n of_o do_v this_o amiss_o be_v no_o more_o dreadful_a than_o what_o may_v be_v fear_v upon_o the_o like_a failure_n in_o do_v other_o duty_n amiss_o 4._o begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o these_o consideration_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o which_o when_o i_o have_v clear_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o other_o will_v easy_o follow_v the_o argument_n be_v this_o the_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o plain_a express_a necessary_a duty_n i_o shall_v think_v i_o need_v not_o be_v put_v upon_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o in_o a_o christian_a audience_n nor_o require_v to_o make_v good_a that_o which_o no_o one_o that_o have_v read_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n can_v deny_v look_v upon_o the_o sacrament_n as_o a_o thing_n of_o choice_n and_o leave_v to_o their_o own_o freedom_n whether_o they_o will_v observe_v it_o or_o not_o but_o tie_v upon_o they_o by_o plain_a and_o peremptory_a precept_n and_o make_v matter_n of_o their_o necessary_a and_o fix_a duty_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o christian_n may_v look_v upon_o and_o esteem_v it_o as_o such_o i_o beg_v that_o these_o few_o thing_n among_o many_o other_o may_v be_v consider_v by_o they_o 1._o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v institute_v ordain_v and_o command_v by_o our_o lord_n in_o word_n as_o express_v and_o plain_a as_o ever_o any_o thing_n can_v or_o ever_o be_v command_v by_o he_o i_o shall_v need_v for_o your_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o but_o bare_o to_o repeat_v the_o word_n of_o the_o evangelist_n three_o of_o who_o mention_n the_o institution_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n mat._n 26.26_o 27_o 28._o and_o as_o they_o be_v eat_v jesus_n take_v bread_n and_o
will_v engage_v they_o to_o do_v so_o in_o this_o too_o i_o need_v not_o inveigh_v against_o this_o temper_n man_n own_a reason_n will_v they_o but_o hear_v it_o will_v make_v they_o ashamed_a of_o it_o at_o present_a i_o only_o add_v that_o this_o argument_n which_o keep_v man_n from_o a_o necessary_a duty_n instead_o of_o encourage_v they_o to_o it_o can_v never_o be_v divine_a or_o true_a nor_o can_v it_o be_v safe_a to_o rely_v upon_o it_o so_o that_o although_o man_n be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v or_o answer_v the_o sophistry_n of_o it_o nor_o show_v wherein_o the_o falsehood_n of_o it_o do_v lie_v yet_o it_o will_v be_v its_o own_o confutation_n for_o that_o argument_n can_v never_o be_v of_o god_n which_o persuade_v man_n to_o live_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o a_o duty_n that_o his_o command_n have_v make_v necessary_a and_o therefore_o when_o we_o come_v to_o weigh_v argument_n in_o this_o case_n we_o shall_v always_o incline_v most_o to_o those_o which_o teach_v we_o our_o duty_n and_o encourage_v we_o in_o it_o because_o this_o be_v certain_o the_o safe_a side_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o be_v our_o mind_n pure_o pendulous_a be_v there_o argument_n on_o both_o side_n of_o the_o question_n that_o appear_v equal_o true_a and_o conclude_a so_o that_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o they_o nor_o know_v which_o to_o incline_v unto_o yet_o this_o alone_o be_v enough_o to_o turn_v the_o scale_n one_o do_v invite_v and_o encourage_v i_o to_o do_v my_o duty_n what_o i_o see_v the_o plain_a command_n of_o god_n for_o the_o other_o do_v discourage_v and_o fright_v i_o from_o it_o and_o therefore_o if_o i_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discover_v by_o any_o internal_a signature_n on_o which_o side_n the_o truth_n do_v lie_v yet_o shall_v he_o deal_v in_o strict_a justice_n may_v cause_v he_o to_o reject_v and_o abhor_v they_o in_o short_a it_o be_v only_o that_o monstrous_a profanation_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n which_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o that_o make_v a_o man_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n and_o therefore_o only_o that_o or_o something_o as_o bad_a that_o bring_v he_o in_o danger_n of_o that_o damnation_n which_o be_v here_o threaten_a so_o that_o unless_o man_n be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n they_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o fear_v the_o same_o punishment_n but_o i_o shall_v not_o put_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o this_o scruple_n only_o upon_o this_o but_o consider_v it_o in_o itself_o and_o examine_v whether_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n in_o it_o fit_a to_o be_v make_v a_o exception_n against_o this_o service_n in_o order_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o do_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o give_v the_o true_a sense_n it_o be_v use_v in_o both_o signification_n be_v the_o thing_n necessary_a or_o not_o well_o know_v from_o this_o signification_n therefore_o of_o the_o word_n we_o can_v infer_v any_o thing_n certain_a here_o it_o may_v signify_v the_o one_o or_o it_o may_v signify_v the_o
happy_a medium_n between_o these_o two_o which_o always_o be_v open_a and_o shall_v always_o be_v take_v by_o man_n in_o this_o case_n viz._n to_o do_v their_o duty_n and_o do_v all_o they_o can_v to_o remedy_n that_o which_o will_v indispose_v they_o for_o it_o a_o man_n may_v be_v sensible_a of_o his_o indisposition_n and_o sorry_a for_o it_o he_o may_v endeavour_v and_o pray_v against_o it_o they_o common_o take_v in_o this_o case_n and_o that_o they_o ought_v thus_o to_o believe_v and_o thus_o to_o consider_v will_v appear_v plain_a upon_o these_o two_o reason_n which_o i_o but_o just_a name_n because_o i_o have_v consider_v they_o already_o first_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o it_o be_v a_o christian_n indispensible_a duty_n time_n that_o the_o church_n do_v call_v we_o unto_o it_o so_o that_o upon_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o man_n think_v themselves_o oblige_v to_o go_v to_o church_n every_o sunday_n and_o join_v in_o the_o public_a prayer_n and_o service_n of_o it_o and_o do_v not_o count_v every_o little_a indisposition_n upon_o they_o a_o discharge_n from_o it_o upon_o the_o same_o they_o ought_v to_o think_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o go_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n every_o time_n the_o church_n administer_v it_o and_o that_o every_o accidental_a indisposition_n can_v no_o more_o excuse_v they_o from_o time_n only_o speedy_a care_n ought_v to_o be_v take_v against_o it_o and_o all_o endeavour_n use_v for_o the_o removal_n of_o it_o against_o the_o next_o time_n for_o continual_a unfitness_n can_v possible_o excuse_v any_o man_n from_o it_o i_o lay_v down_o this_o against_o those_o that_o be_v always_o complain_v of_o their_o unfitness_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o upon_o that_o reason_n stay_v always_o from_o it_o hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v in_o so_o do_v few_o thing_n be_v more_o common_a than_o this_o and_o we_o see_v it_o instance_a almost_o every_o day_n there_o be_v some_o careless_a negligent_a person_n on_o one_o hand_n that_o care_v not_o to_o come_v up_o to_o the_o full_a communion_n of_o the_o church_n and_o there_o be_v some_o disaffect_v person_n on_o the_o other_o that_o be_v prejudice_v against_o it_o but_o both_o side_n when_o press_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n have_v the_o same_o plea_n of_o their_o unworthiness_n ready_a to_o make_v and_o think_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o one_o sort_n of_o man_n plead_v it_o honest_o and_o upon_o real_a scruple_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v another_o sort_n plead_v it_o upon_o design_n and_o use_v it_o as_o a_o artificial_a excuse_n against_o that_o which_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n unto_o i_o shall_v not_o consider_v these_o sort_n of_o people_n distinct_o and_o separately_z but_o apply_v myself_o to_o the_o removal_n of_o this_o evil_a and_o argue_v the_o unreasonableness_n of_o it_o upon_o such_o consideration_n as_o may_v be_v proper_a for_o the_o cure_n of_o it_o from_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o may_v arise_v 1._o and_o first_o i_o desire_v to_o know_v whether_o such_o man_n count_v their_o unworthiness_n and_o unfitness_n a_o sin_n or_o not_o general_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o particular_a be_v to_o be_v determine_v by_o that_o particular_a matter_n that_o it_o be_v apply_v unto_o so_o that_o to_o determine_v that_o here_o in_o this_o place_n we_o need_v only_o to_o inquire_v what_o that_o particular_a worthiness_n and_o becomingness_n be_v which_o ought_v to_o accompany_v the_o do_v any_o duty_n or_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n unworthy_o will_n and_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o contrary_a to_o it_o according_a to_o this_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n now_o the_o great_a and_o necessary_a qualification_n to_o render_v the_o do_v any_o service_n of_o religion_n become_v and_o fit_a be_v great_a reverence_n and_o devotion_n out_o of_o a_o bread_n as_o common_a bread_n and_o drink_v that_o cup_n as_o common_a wine_n the_o put_v no_o difference_n between_o that_o
and_o after_o the_o holy_a comunion_n and_o we_o may_v common_o see_v that_o they_o do_v so_o man_n have_v general_o more_o veneration_n for_o religion_n than_o to_o go_v drink_v to_o church_n or_o last_o age_n none_o ever_o count_v to_o pass_v for_o christian_n that_o neglect_v it_o and_o therefore_o their_o business_n be_v only_o to_o direct_v the_o zeal_n and_o devotion_n of_o christian_n in_o this_o instance_n and_o not_o to_o excite_v it_o to_o direct_v and_o instruct_v man_n how_o to_o come_v acceptable_o and_o as_o they_o ought_v and_o not_o to_o argue_v with_o they_o about_o the_o duty_n of_o come_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v so_o much_o meet_v with_o in_o their_o write_n about_o the_o necessity_n and_o way_n of_o due_a preparation_n and_o so_o little_a about_o the_o obligation_n to_o come_v many_o book_n write_v to_o instruct_v man_n in_o the_o method_n of_o due_a preparation_n but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o insist_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v our_o chief_a task_n and_o business_n at_o present_a for_o in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o feculent_a and_o almost_o worst_a of_o age_n man_n have_v run_v their_o instruction_n and_o doctrine_n into_o the_o other_o extreme_a press_v so_o much_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o extraordinary_a preparation_n and_o aggravate_v so_o mighty_o the_o danger_n of_o receive_v unworthy_o that_o man_n be_v fright_v from_o the_o sacrament_n rather_o than_o invite_v to_o it_o and_o have_v think_v it_o as_o i_o say_v before_o safe_o to_o keep_v whole_o from_o it_o than_o to_o run_v so_o great_a a_o hazard_n in_o the_o observation_n thereof_o these_o thing_n we_o find_v stick_v fast_o in_o man_n mind_n yet_o and_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o dispossess_v they_o of_o that_o superstitious_a fear_n that_o these_o doctrine_n have_v strike_v they_o with_o man_n be_v now_o in_o more_o danger_n to_o run_v into_o the_o contrary_a extreme_a than_o to_o fall_v into_o this_o in_o more_o danger_n to_o stay_v whole_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o dread_n of_o it_o than_o to_o run_v to_o it_o careless_o and_o without_o any_o due_a regard_n of_o the_o sacredness_n of_o it_o upon_o these_o reason_n it_o may_v i_o think_v safe_o be_v say_v that_o christian_n now_o be_v in_o little_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n and_o almost_o out_o of_o a_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n and_o which_o the_o apostle_n tax_v the_o corinthian_n for_o sect_n iii_o have_v proceed_v so_o far_o upon_o the_o strict_a sense_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o direct_a design_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o it_o i_o go_v on_o to_o a_o material_a scruple_n and_o a_o very_a important_a inquiry_n very_o fit_a to_o be_v consider_v and_o resolve_v and_o that_o be_v whether_o nothing_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o beside_o this_o do_v a_o man_n never_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o when_o he_o come_v drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n do_v not_o this_o open_a a_o gate_n to_o very_o great_a looseness_n and_o carelessness_n and_o make_v communicate_v worthy_o a_o very_a light_n and_o easy_a thing_n to_o what_o purpose_n need_v the_o good_a father_n of_o the_o church_n to_o have_v take_v so_o much_o pain_n to_o direct_v man_n how_o to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o this_o service_n and_o have_v press_v the_o observance_n of_o those_o prescription_n with_o so_o much_o earnestness_n as_o they_o do_v if_o this_o where_o the_o only_a instance_n in_o which_o man_n can_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o call_v a_o very_a considerable_a inquiry_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o give_v it_o as_o plain_a and_o full_a satisfaction_n as_o i_o be_o able_a it_o seem_v to_o consist_v of_o several_a part_n to_o all_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o suit_v proper_a answer_n in_o these_o follow_a proposition_n 1._o whatever_o man_n may_v say_v or_o think_v in_o this_o matter_n this_o only_a be_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o to_o which_o he_o threaten_v this_o punishment_n this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o and_o if_o man_n will_v consider_v this_o it_o will_v be_v one_o good_a step_n towards_o their_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o case_n and_o of_o good_a use_n towards_o the_o remove_n their_o fear_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o why_o shall_v man_n fear_v incur_v the_o same_o guilt_n unless_o they_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n and_o while_o they_o be_v very_o sure_o they_o shall_v not_o commit_v the_o one_o why_o shall_v they_o discourage_v and_o afflict_v themselves_o with_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o it_o be_v neither_o safe_a nor_o fair_a deal_n to_o apply_v passage_n of_o scripture_n beyond_o their_o own_o proper_a intendment_n and_o few_o thing_n have_v do_v more_o harm_n in_o divinity_n than_o this_o as_o we_o can_v establish_v or_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o doctrine_n from_o the_o bare_a chime_a of_o word_n or_o because_o some_o say_n may_v be_v find_v in_o scripture_n that_o seem_v to_o find_v to_o our_o sense_n and_o purpose_n no_o more_o ought_v we_o hasty_o to_o extend_v reproof_n and_o threaten_n beyond_o their_o own_o proper_a matter_n as_o for_o example_n to_o make_v this_o clear_a in_o a_o parallel_n case_n every_o failure_n of_o a_o clergyman_n in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o public_a duty_n be_v not_o present_o to_o be_v think_v to_o be_v nadab_n and_o abihu_n offering_n of_o strange_a fire_n nor_o be_v present_o to_o expect_v the_o like_a miraculous_a punishment_n from_o heaven_n no_o more_o ought_v we_o to_o conclude_v that_o every_o failure_n in_o eat_v and_o drink_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v present_o that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o or_o that_o every_o christian_n be_v therefore_o liable_a to_o the_o same_o damnation_n that_o we_o think_v they_o be_v threaten_v withal_o the_o corinthian_n do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n make_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o sacrament_n and_o a_o common_a meal_n come_v drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o in_o a_o condition_n that_o make_v they_o utter_o unable_a to_o pay_v any_o respect_n or_o reverence_n to_o the_o symbol_n of_o their_o lord_n body_n and_o blood_n and_o therefore_o be_v sharp_o threaten_v and_o punish_v too_o but_o what_o be_v all_o this_o to_o thou_o that_o even_o tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o
such_o horrible_a profaneness_n why_o need_v thou_o discourage_v and_o fright_v thyself_o from_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n with_o fear_n of_o the_o same_o guilt_n and_o punishment_n when_o thou_o be_v very_o sure_a thou_o shall_v not_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n and_o let_v i_o add_v when_o if_o thou_o have_v the_o least_o sense_n of_o religion_n in_o thou_o and_o do_v in_o any_o may_v and_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o other_o such_o passage_n in_o holy_a scripture_n but_o we_o may_v improve_v so_o too_o and_o there_o be_v two_o very_a useful_a improvement_n that_o we_o may_v make_v of_o this_o to_o our_o own_o advantage_n 1._o the_o first_o be_v to_o engage_v our_o utmost_a care_n and_o caution_n against_o the_o same_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o prime_n principal_a and_o most_o proper_a improvement_n of_o it_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o sin_n after_o the_o similitude_n of_o transgression_n that_o they_o do_v this_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o a_o like_a case_n the_o threaten_n of_o punishment_n that_o fall_v upon_o the_o jew_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d be_v our_o example_n and_o intend_v as_o admonition_n to_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o lust_n and_o become_v idolater_n and_o murmurer_n as_o they_o be_v 1_o cor._n 10.6_o and_o 10._o and_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v just_a so_o here_o also_o the_o threaten_n and_o punishment_n of_o the_o corinthian_n for_o their_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a profanation_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n aught_o to_o caution_n we_o against_o the_o like_a irreverence_n but_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v any_o good_a reason_n why_o we_o shall_v afflict_v ourselves_o with_o apprehension_n and_o fear_n of_o the_o same_o punishment_n while_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n we_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o the_o same_o sin_n any_o more_o than_o there_o be_v reason_n for_o those_o man_n present_o to_o expect_v the_o plague_n the_o exterminate_a angel_n the_o fiery_a serpent_n that_o destroy_v the_o idolatrous_a and_o lustful_a israelite_n who_o be_v never_o guilty_a of_o any_o uncleanness_n or_o idolatry_n like_o they_o 2_o but_o we_o may_v go_v further_o yet_o in_o our_o improvement_n of_o this_o and_o such_o passage_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n i._n e._n to_o engage_v our_o care_n not_o only_o against_o the_o same_o sin_n but_o any_o thing_n that_o look_v like_o it_o or_o so_o every_o christian_n by_o consider_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o corinthian_n and_o what_o befall_v they_o for_o it_o may_v learn_v how_o great_o it_o concern_v he_o to_o be_v devout_a and_o reverend_a at_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o look_v like_o a_o profanation_n of_o that_o sacred_a ordinance_n but_o as_o i_o do_v not_o know_v any_o reason_n why_o he_o shall_v think_v every_o little_a failure_n of_o he_o to_o be_v the_o same_o unworthy_a eat_n and_o drink_v that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o no_o more_o do_v i_o know_v any_o cause_n why_o he_o shall_v present_o dread_v the_o same_o punishment_n that_o be_v inflict_v upon_o they_o 2._o but_o i_o advance_v a_o second_o proposition_n in_o further_a answer_n to_o this_o question_n viz._n that_o although_o this_o be_v the_o only_a true_a notion_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o this_o text_n yet_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o man_n may_v fix_v that_o notion_n upon_o other_o thing_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o analogy_n and_o proportion_n i_o mean_v there_o may_v perhaps_o be_v some_o other_o thing_n that_o may_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o some_o proportion_n to_o what_o the_o corinthian_n do_v so_o that_o i_o be_o far_o from_o say_v that_o no_o man_n needs_o fear_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o he_o that_o be_v drink_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n there_o may_v possible_o be_v other_o thing_n to_o bring_v a_o man_n within_o that_o guilt_n as_o well_o as_o that_o and_o this_o be_v as_o much_o i_o think_v as_o can_v be_v require_v in_o this_o objection_n but_o then_o i_o say_v withal_o these_o two_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v have_v always_o consider_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o this_o concession_n 1._o that_o whatever_o and_o guilt_n and_o very_o rich_a of_o any_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o fear_v to_o incur_v it_o be_v a_o very_a specious_a thing_n it_o look_v well_o and_o be_v certain_o in_o itself_o a_o commendable_a thing_n easy_o embrace_v and_o ready_o swallow_v yea_o and_o let_v i_o add_v be_v as_o hardly_o remove_v when_o man_n have_v once_o give_v way_n to_o it_o when_o man_n can_v appeal_v to_o their_o own_o mind_n and_o be_v able_a to_o say_v that_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o communicate_v amiss_o and_o sin_v great_o in_o do_v so_o and_o that_o nothing_o but_o this_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n it_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a thing_n to_o persuade_v they_o to_o it_o they_o think_v they_o be_v on_o the_o sure_a side_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o make_v they_o change_v i_o be_o the_o more_o earnest_a therefore_o in_o beg_v man_n to_o take_v heed_n of_o entertain_v this_o opinion_n it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n and_o that_o which_o this_o subtle_a enemy_n under_o the_o semblance_n of_o a_o friend_n put_v upon_o they_o on_o purpose_n to_o hinder_v they_o from_o a_o absolute_o necessary_a yea_o and_o most_o advantageous_a duty_n by_o the_o sin_n and_o folly_n of_o which_o he_o will_v ruin_v and_o destroy_v they_o more_o fatal_o and_o successful_o than_o they_o will_v be_v ruin_v by_o any_o sin_n and_o guilt_n in_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n though_o they_o do_v not_o communicate_v so_o well_o and_o becoming_o as_o they_o shall_v do_v endeavour_v therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o to_o clear_v your_o mind_n from_o this_o superstitious_a unreasonable_a fear_n that_o man_n have_v so_o general_o in_o this_o age_n and_o to_o which_o i_o wish_v i_o can_v not_o say_v the_o considerable_a cheerfulness_n and_o comfort_n of_o mind_n in_o it_o but_o there_o will_v be_v some_o tremble_a and_o dread_a upon_o your_o spirit_n some_o anxious_a misgiving_n and_o aboding_n of_o mind_n which_o will_v make_v this_o service_n unpleasant_a and_o uneasy_a to_o you_o and_o at_o last_o go_v near_o to_o cause_v you_o to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o total_a neglect_n of_o it_o a_o second_o evil_a design_n that_o the_o devil_n have_v in_o this_o be_v to_o render_v man_n careless_a and_o negligent_a in_o all_o other_o for_o by_o cause_v their_o zeal_n and_o care_n to_o be_v so_o other_o unworthy_o to_o grow_v less_o man_n may_v possible_o imagine_v it_o will_v not_o be_v thus_o but_o it_o be_v almost_o certain_a and_o ever_o see_v in_o experience_n to_o be_v so_o man_n ii_o 3._o this_o equal_a possibility_n of_o sin_n and_o guilt_n in_o do_v other_o service_n of_o religion_n amiss_o be_v not_o count_v by_o we_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o a_o man_n from_o all_o service_n of_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n for_o there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o of_o these_o which_o we_o be_v not_o as_o apt_a to_o fail_v in_o do_v guilty_a of_o i_o have_v already_o say_v their_o miscarriage_n may_v well_o be_v count_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o indeed_o but_o therefore_o to_o infer_v that_o every_o failure_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v so_o reverent_o so_o fit_o and_o so_o becoming_o as_o man_n shall_v be_v present_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o proportion_n to_o they_o be_v put_v our_o own_o sense_n upon_o for_o any_o christian_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n relate_v to_o in_o the_o text_n and_o i_o very_o believe_v it_o and_o therefore_o why_o they_o that_o be_v real_o so_o far_o from_o it_o
