prevarication_n be_v this_o with_o god_n and_o your_o own_o conscience_n though_o i_o doubt_v this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o most_o of_o those_o man_n who_o plead_v inability_n when_o they_o never_o in_o good_a earnest_n make_v a_o experiment_n what_o may_v be_v do_v in_o the_o use_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o god_n have_v appoint_v and_o be_v in_o our_o power_n to_o use_v but_o if_o you_o have_v try_v and_o miscarry_v why_o do_v you_o not_o try_v again_o and_o after_o that_o again_z and_o again_o and_o that_o with_o great_a diligence_n and_o care_n than_o before_o for_o this_o you_o can_v have_v do_v and_o why_o shall_v it_o be_v judge_v reasonable_a in_o our_o worldly_a affair_n to_o attempt_v over_o and_o over_o again_o the_o same_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v fail_v at_o the_o first_o in_o hope_n of_o better_a success_n at_o last_o and_o not_o be_v think_v fit_a nay_o why_o shall_v we_o not_o be_v willing_a to_o use_v the_o same_o repeat_v diligence_n notwithstanding_o such_o like_a discouragement_n in_o the_o weighty_a concernment_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o since_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n we_o can_v do_v the_o one_o for_o we_o do_v it_o we_o ought_v to_o conclude_v that_o we_o can_v if_o we_o set_v ourselves_o to_o it_o do_v the_o other_o for_o a_o soul_n can_v do_v more_o for_o itself_o than_o for_o any_o thing_n else_o if_o it_o will_v but_o consider_v what_o a_o valuable_a be_v it_o be_v and_o where_o its_o true_a interest_n lie_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n this_o be_v the_o first_o answer_n to_o the_o pretence_n of_o unfitness_n and_o what_o be_v last_o say_v may_v serve_v for_o a_o answer_n also_o to_o those_o that_o complain_v of_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o want_v of_o affection_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o holy_a duty_n let_v they_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o be_v able_a and_o they_o will_v find_v acceptance_n with_o god_n and_o grow_v more_o affect_v with_o his_o love_n and_o for_o a_o answer_n to_o those_o also_o that_o say_v they_o be_v never_o the_o better_a for_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n it_o be_v certain_a they_o be_v something_o the_o better_a by_o their_o very_a come_n thither_o if_o they_o do_v not_o come_v without_o a_o resolution_n of_o amendment_n for_o that_o resolution_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o keep_v they_o shall_v not_o thereby_o have_v be_v discourage_v from_o come_v again_o but_o rather_o have_v renew_v it_o which_o have_v be_v still_o a_o better_a thing_n and_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v give_v over_o the_o attempt_n upon_o a_o new_a miscarriage_n but_o still_o labour_v and_o endeavour_v to_o settle_v this_o resolution_n so_o steadfast_o by_o constant_a renewal_n of_o their_o covenant_n with_o christ_n that_o at_o last_o it_o may_v have_v stand_v unmoveable_a in_o all_o those_o temptation_n which_o be_v wont_a to_o overthrow_v it_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o christ_n not_o to_o sit_v down_o content_v with_o complaint_n of_o our_o unfitness_n to_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o but_o never_o to_o rest_v satisfy_v till_o by_o our_o earnest_n and_o repeat_v endeavour_n we_o be_v better_o dispose_v ii_o and_o there_o be_v this_o great_a reason_n to_o enforce_v such_o endeavour_n which_o these_o complainer_n will_v do_v well_o to_o lay_v to_o heart_n that_o if_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o holy_a duty_n of_o commemorate_n the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o receive_v the_o token_n and_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n they_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o think_v themselves_o fit_a for_o other_o holy_a duty_n which_o be_v confess_v by_o all_o to_o be_v of_o daily_a use_n viz._n for_o prayer_n for_o thanksgiving_n and_o praise_v god_n which_o duty_n if_o man_n be_v not_o fit_a to_o perform_v they_o ought_v to_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o not_o fit_a to_o live_v in_o the_o world_n or_o to_o go_v out_o of_o it_o but_o if_o they_o be_v not_o unfit_a for_o these_o then_o how_o can_v they_o say_v they_o be_v unfit_a for_o this_o since_o our_o part_n in_o the_o holy_a communion_n be_v whole_o perform_v by_o devout_a prayer_n and_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n with_o such_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o holy_a resolution_n as_o aught_o always_o to_o accompany_v those_o holy_a action_n and_o our_o part_n be_v thus_o perform_v what_o reason_n have_v we_o to_o think_v that_o god_n will_v not_o perform_v he_o by_o account_v we_o worthy_a to_o receive_v those_o blessing_n which_o he_o there_o impart_v for_o he_o be_v always_o more_o ready_a to_o give_v than_o we_o be_v to_o receive_v and_o we_o be_v not_o unmeet_a to_o receive_v when_o we_o be_v thus_o dispose_v to_o ask_v to_o this_o purpose_n you_o may_v remember_v i_o allege_v st._n chrysostoms_n word_n in_o my_o former_a discourse_n be_v thou_o not_o worthy_a to_o partake_v of_o the_o sacrifice_n then_o be_v thou_o not_o from_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o duty_n for_o shall_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o score_n keep_v those_o from_o the_o communion_n who_o now_o keep_v themselves_o from_o it_o say_v to_o they_o as_o of_o old_a be_v go_v you_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o partake_v with_o we_o they_o will_v take_v it_o very_o heinous_o at_o his_o hand_n and_o be_v apt_a to_o reply_v we_o be_v as_o fit_a as_o many_o who_o you_o admit_v to_o partake_v with_o you_o you_o do_v we_o a_o injury_n in_o thrust_v we_o away_o from_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n where_o we_o see_v those_o
without_o impediment_n and_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o leave_v in_o their_o soul_n to_o oppose_v their_o duty_n whereas_o bad_a people_n in_o a_o quite_o contrary_a way_n give_v admission_n to_o those_o scruple_n and_o doubt_n into_o their_o mind_n with_o a_o secret_a pleasure_n and_o have_v entertain_v they_o let_v they_o rest_n and_o take_v up_o their_o lodging_n there_o very_o willing_o rid_v of_o they_o and_o be_v glad_a when_o they_o be_v discharge_v because_o they_o hinder_v the_o performance_n of_o their_o christian_a duty_n but_o bad_a man_n not_o only_o listen_v to_o they_o willing_o but_o embrace_v they_o as_o welcome_a guest_n which_o they_o cherish_v and_o never_o part_v withal_o without_o difficulty_n and_o some_o sort_n of_o inward_a displeasure_n because_o they_o ourselves_o with_o word_n but_o understand_v the_o sense_n of_o thing_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v perplex_v as_o many_o have_v be_v in_o this_o business_n of_o preparation_n much_o less_o will_v any_o be_v affright_v from_o the_o holy_a communion_n by_o be_v command_v to_o kneel_v when_o they_o receive_v it_o which_o be_v no_o more_o than_o they_o do_v at_o their_o daily_a prayer_n and_o therefore_o shall_v the_o rather_o be_v incline_v to_o do_v here_o when_o we_o pray_v and_o give_v thanks_o for_o the_o great_a blessing_n which_o we_o can_v do_v in_o too_o humble_a a_o manner_n we_o worship_v also_o and_o adore_v our_o bless_a lord_n in_o this_o holy_a action_n and_o therefore_o one_o will_v think_v shall_v be_v dispose_v of_o ourselves_o without_o any_o injunction_n to_o fall_v down_o upon_o our_o knee_n in_o token_n of_o the_o worship_n which_o we_o give_v he_o which_o be_v no_o popish_a ceremony_n be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o enjoin_v by_o that_o church_n in_o the_o act_n of_o receive_v nor_o observe_v by_o the_o pope_n himself_o who_o when_o he_o receive_v rather_o sit_v or_o lean_v a_o little_a forward_a upon_o his_o throne_n but_o a_o ancient_a devout_a posture_n of_o the_o best_a christian_n which_o the_o people_n of_o the_o roman_a communion_n observe_v by_o long_a custom_n without_o bid_v and_o therefore_o shall_v much_o more_o be_v cheerful_o observe_v by_o we_o when_o we_o be_v enjoin_v to_o keep_v to_o the_o ancient_a reverence_n wherewith_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n receive_v the_o pledge_n of_o our_o saviour_n love_n vouchsafe_v i_o beseech_v you_o to_o give_v this_o small_a book_n wherewith_o i_o present_v you_o a_o careful_a read_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o it_o will_v free_v you_o not_o only_o from_o these_o but_o from_o all_o sort_n of_o scruple_n if_o any_o of_o you_o be_v trouble_v with_o they_o which_o now_o hinder_v many_o people_n from_o the_o great_a duty_n and_o comfort_v too_o of_o our_o holy_a religion_n which_o if_o you_o will_v be_v persuade_v to_o perform_v often_o the_o profit_n which_o will_v redound_v to_o you_o thereby_o will_v be_v as_o great_a as_o the_o credit_n which_o it_o will_v do_v to_o our_o church_n and_o religion_n for_o no_o man_n can_v come_v serious_o to_o the_o holy_a communion_n but_o with_o some_o resolution_n of_o be_v better_a than_o he_o have_v be_v which_o resolution_n be_v not_o present_o break_v but_o last_o for_o some_o time_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v not_o too_o long_o a_o distance_n between_o one_o communion_n and_o another_o it_o be_v likely_a they_o may_v last_v for_o ever_o for_o before_o the_o force_n of_o the_o first_o resolution_n be_v quite_o lose_v it_o will_v be_v back_v and_o strengthen_v with_o a_o second_o and_o so_o be_v reinforce_v from_o time_n to_o time_n while_o it_o remain_v in_o some_o power_n will_v become_v so_o firm_a that_o it_o will_v never_o be_v break_v make_v a_o trial_n i_o earnest_o entreat_v you_o and_o suffer_v not_o this_o pain_n which_o i_o have_v take_v to_o serve_v you_o to_o be_v throw_v away_o without_o that_o good_a effect_n which_o it_o will_v not_o be_v if_o you_o make_v the_o trial_n with_o the_o same_o seriousness_n wherewith_o i_o have_v write_v this_o treatise_n in_o which_o you_o will_v meet_v with_o nothing_o to_o entertain_v the_o fancy_n not_o so_o much_o as_o with_o fine_a word_n and_o elegant_a composure_n but_o with_o good_a store_n i_o think_v of_o solid_a sense_n to_o inlighten_v the_o mind_n to_o inform_v the_o judgement_n to_o pierce_v the_o heart_n to_o stir_v up_o holy_a devotion_n nay_o to_o turn_v the_o will_n and_o produce_v godly_a resolution_n which_o if_o they_o be_v pursue_v and_o have_v their_o fruit_n unto_o holiness_n will_v in_o the_o end_n bring_v you_o to_o eternal_a life_n and_o that_o such_o resolution_n may_v be_v both_o produce_v and_o pursue_v i_o will_v here_o add_v one_o observation_n more_o for_o the_o remove_n the_o great_a of_o those_o hindrance_n to_o holy_a communion_n which_o lie_v in_o the_o way_n of_o those_o who_o pretend_v to_o religion_n it_o be_v this_o that_o doubt_n and_o scruple_n be_v the_o weakness_n and_o sickness_n of_o the_o soul_n they_o that_o ready_o entertain_v they_o and_o then_o suffer_v they_o to_o remain_v there_o quiet_o and_o peaceable_o be_v in_o a_o very_a ill_a case_n nay_o aught_o to_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o in_o a_o very_a dangerous_a condition_n for_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n all_o be_v naught_o within_o and_o that_o they_o deceive_v themselves_o with_o a_o vain_a opinion_n of_o their_o be_v religious_a for_o they_o who_o be_v true_o so_o groan_n under_o their_o doubt_n and_o scruple_n as_o under_o a_o sore_a disease_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o let_v they_o long_o dwell_v with_o they_o but_o seek_v with_o all_o speed_n to_o have_v satisfaction_n which_o when_o it_o be_v offer_v they_o receive_v with_o all_o readiness_n of_o mind_n and_o be_v not_o loath_a to_o be_v cure_v but_o rejoice_v that_o they_o be_v set_v at_o liberty_n to_o serve_v god_n
be_v none_o this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o for_o we_o can_v see_v no_o difference_n at_o all_o in_o the_o way_n and_o manner_n of_o the_o expression_n wherein_o these_o thing_n be_v deliver_v much_o less_o any_o such_o difference_n as_o make_v the_o former_a to_o be_v enact_v word_n as_o lawyer_n speak_v and_o the_o latter_a to_o enact_v nothing_o now_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o this_o express_a command_n alone_o to_o be_v urge_v for_o this_o duty_n one_o will_v expect_v it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a to_o awaken_v every_o man_n to_o the_o performance_n who_o hope_v to_o find_v mercy_n with_o god_n and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n jesus_n for_o you_o be_v my_o friend_n say_v he_o himself_o who_o know_v no_o other_o term_n of_o it_o joh._n xv_o 14._o if_o you_o do_v whatsoever_o i_o command_v you_o which_o he_o have_v say_v before_o in_o the_o very_a first_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o this_o day_n joh._n fourteen_o 15._o if_o you_o love_v i_o keep_v all_o the_o world_n look_v on_o he_o as_o a_o man_n of_o a_o barbarous_a nature_n void_a of_o all_o humanity_n who_o deny_v the_o last_o suit_n of_o a_o die_a person_n though_o a_o mere_a stranger_n and_o testament_n which_o he_o be_v about_o to_o seal_v with_o his_o blood_n and_o the_o last_o will_n of_o he_o who_o love_v we_o better_o than_o his_o own_o life_n who_o die_v that_o we_o may_v live_v who_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n lay_v down_o his_o life_n which_o no_o body_n have_v power_n to_o take_v away_o for_o he_o have_v all_o thing_n even_o angel_n themselves_o at_o his_o command_n and_o more_o particular_o be_v our_o most_o gracious_a lord_n and_o master_n and_o have_v the_o most_o unquestionable_a authority_n over_o every_o one_o of_o we_o who_o can_v therefore_o neglect_v satisfaction_n in_o that_o matter_n let_v it_o be_v brief_o consider_v first_o that_o break_v of_o bread_n be_v here_o place_v in_o the_o midst_n between_o other_o holy_a action_n preach_v fellowship_n or_o communicate_v to_o one_o another_o necessity_n and_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o in_o all_o reason_n must_v be_v conclude_v to_o be_v itself_o of_o that_o nature_n not_o a_o common_a be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n incumbent_a on_o they_o by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n command_n and_o a_o divine_a institution_n do_v but_o consider_v this_o i_o beseech_v you_o and_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n communion_n direct_v they_o how_o to_o reform_v it_o and_o make_v a_o due_a preparation_n to_o receive_v the_o benefit_n thereof_o and_o then_o tell_v i_o or_o rather_o tell_v yourselves_o be_v heavenly_a comfort_n of_o which_o you_o may_v there_o partake_v by_o a_o opinion_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o long_a examination_n of_o yourselves_o beforehand_o for_o that_o necessity_n arise_v only_o from_o long_a neglect_n of_o the_o communion_n receive_v frequent_o as_o the_o first_o christian_n do_v and_o than_o you_o will_v be_v as_o ready_a for_o this_o on_o all_o occasion_n as_o you_o be_v for_o other_o duty_n of_o holy_a worship_n for_o you_o will_v be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o state_n of_o your_o own_o soul_n and_o with_o the_o nature_n and_o end_n of_o this_o part_n of_o well_o be_v avoid_v or_o have_v a_o friend_n come_v to_o see_v we_o the_o day_n before_o the_o communion_n with_o who_o we_o can_v not_o but_o in_o civility_n spend_v a_o good_a deal_n of_o time_n these_o and_o such_o like_a i_o be_o ashamed_a to_o do_v more_o than_o mention_n they_o be_v so_o trivial_a and_o by_o no_o understanding_n christian_n can_v be_v think_v a_o reasonable_a cause_n into_o a_o church_n where_o we_o be_v stranger_n and_o do_v not_o know_v it_o will_v be_v there_o at_o that_o time_n administer_v i_o make_v no_o question_n it_o will_v be_v far_o more_o acceptable_a to_o our_o lord_n christ_n if_o with_o no_o other_o preparation_n than_o i_o have_v now_o mention_v we_o take_v the_o boldness_n to_o approach_v to_o his_o table_n than_o if_o out_o of_o a_o mistake_a they_o present_v themselves_o to_o receive_v it_o for_o who_o be_v they_o for_o who_o christ_n prepare_v this_o table_n but_o his_o disciple_n and_o what_o other_o rule_n have_v we_o whereby_o to_o
