in_o these_o word_n give_v we_o a_o part_n of_o a_o description_n of_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o latter_a time_n &_o he_o bring_v they_o in_o by_o way_n of_o prevention_n or_o objection_n or_o answer_v to_o a_o objection_n as_o if_o some_o shall_v wonder_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o kind_n of_o person_n in_o the_o church_n as_o he_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n have_v describe_v covetous_a boaster_n proud_a blasphemer_n disobedient_a to_o parent_n unthankful_a unholy_a etc._n etc._n do_v these_o live_v as_o the_o church_n do_v do_v these_o retain_v the_o sacrament_n and_o the_o like_a yes_o say_v the_o apostle_n they_o do_v we_o can_v deny_v it_o only_o this_o they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o etc._n etc._n so_o that_o the_o point_n of_o doctrine_n arise_v from_o hence_o do_v plain_o appear_v even_o at_o the_o first_o sight_n to_o be_v this_o viz._n that_o there_o be_v a_o powerful_a godliness_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o that_o many_o have_v but_o the_o form_n not_o the_o power_n thereof_o now_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n to_o be_v explain_v in_o open_v of_o this_o doctrine_n to_o show_v 1._o what_o godliness_n be_v 2._o what_o the_o power_n thereof_o be_v 3._o the_o reason_n why_o many_o have_v no_o more_o but_o the_o form_n thereof_o for_o the_o first_o that_o you_o may_v the_o better_o conceive_v what_o godliness_n be_v i_o will_v first_o show_v you_o what_o it_o be_v not_o first_o then_o it_o be_v not_o bare_a nature_n but_o that_o godliness_n not_o which_o god_n require_v of_o all_o man_n be_v more_o than_o so_o god_n indeed_o have_v command_v nature_n yea_o even_o corrupt_a nature_n to_o bring_v forth_o many_o fruit_n of_o godliness_n as_o much_o abstinence_n from_o pleasure_n much_o patience_n much_o temperance_n and_o such_o like_a which_o be_v all_o very_a beautiful_a in_o their_o own_o sphere_n but_o because_o they_o come_v not_o from_o god_n nor_o his_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n or_o because_o they_o have_v no_o respect_n of_o god_n therefore_o they_o be_v not_o godliness_n neither_o do_v god_n regard_v they_o second_o it_o be_v not_o the_o act_n of_o religion_n proceed_v from_o self-love_n though_o offer_v to_o god_n in_o regard_n that_o man_n see_v that_o god_n be_v the_o governor_n of_o the_o world_n that_o he_o have_v the_o key_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o man_n may_v do_v much_o to_o god_n for_o such_o respect_n use_v he_o as_o a_o bridge_n to_o get_v to_o heaven_n by_o make_v themselves_o their_o utmost_a end_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v not_o godliness_n but_o what_o be_v it_o then_o you_o will_v say_v three_o it_o be_v a_o divine_a grace_n infuse_v into_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o god_n whereby_o a_o man_n follow_v god_n love_v he_o magnify_v he_o set_v he_o up_o in_o his_o heart_n above_o all_o and_o manifest_v this_o in_o his_o life_n and_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o it_o do_v all_o for_o he_o and_o to_o he_o and_o it_o be_v thus_o wrought_v when_o the_o creature_n
